Dictionary definition of music according to Webster (sorry the edition is a
little old):

'the art and science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds or tones in
varying melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre, especially so as to form
structurally complete and emotionally expressive compositions'

interesting third definition:

'any rhythmic sequence of pleasing sounds, as of birds, water, etc.'

and:

'ability to respond to or take pleasure in music'

Music does not have to be melodious. It is merely a contemplated
arrangement of sounds for the purposes of communicating emotions. Believe
me, debates about what is music vs. what isn't raged in my mind for quite
some time during my early college years. Music is most essential when it
reflects the environment and society in which it was conceived, hence, the
increasing utilization of technological sounds (as an indication of
industrial and intellectual advancement). The beauty is in discovering the
underlying human thoughts and feelings which comprise the core of a piece
and subsequently a moment in time. The subjective experience of music (art
in general) protects it from the myopic qualifications which critics
(amateur and professional alike) impose upon it. Our desire to create
music
stems from a desire to convey our deepest emotions in a way words
themselves

can't oblige. It is a means to transcend our physical limits.

Here I will halt though I could probably compose a thesis on said subject.

Interesting musicological prose Rusty but have you considered that if life
means little other than to procreate, all we acheive means little other than
to fuck. Can what we hear change the world for the better? If so how will
harmony, as in sound, change our position on this earth and will it be worth

Taken from your perspective, being a musician helps you to get laid.
Proven fact. :) An otherwordly mating call, if you will.

A second functional purpose may be to express sexual frustration in a
positive manner. The alleviated stress ensures the survival of the species
through continued procreative capabilities.

I personally choose a broader, more spiritual perspective from which to
analyze the purpose of life. I've been down many roads, none of them
illuminating. It's debates like these that catalyze mental instability.

A timely response Rusty however I do believe that all debate however
challengeing should be entered into. It is only this way that our species
will truly survive. Personaly I enjoy having my beliefs and opinions
challenged as this truly puts my life in perspective allowing me the
freedom to update my beliefs and opinions, this I believe is true evolution
as simple procreation will occur anyway but allowing onesself open to
critisism rarely does. As someone in an earlier article stated "all music
sounds similar", however it's the little differences that make them unique
to us and thus music is purely subjective no wrong or right. I thank you
for this insight and look forward to converseing again soon.

If the 'real' dance music we all evangelize about were universally
acknowledged, what would happen to the whole 'underground,' 'those who
know' vibe we all love so much?

What cracked me up about it -- aside from the lyric -- is that
apparently there's now a 'SchaffelTrance' genre.

Anyone heard Voom Voom's Peng Peng on !K7?. It's members of Truby
Trio and Peter Kruder. Nothing like their other jazzy downbeat stuff.
Has Detroit type deep vibes, minimal, all kinds. Quite unusual LP. I
am feeling the track Urwald - very stripped down yet atmospheric, I
think Urwald translates to 'primal forest', and the awesome Vampire
Song which is like UR meets Anthony Rother meets Daft Punk meets Aril
Brikha. Very cool sounding.

I buy ambient / experimental stuff on cd at experimedia.net from time to
time.

And cd & 12'' at our local store in quebec city ''platine''
(they are in the same gang with ''statik distribution''

When I go to montreal I like to shop at ''atom heart'' & ''in beat'' (don’t
know if it still exists.. i think i heard the shop went on fire but it might
just be a rumours.)

I also DL lost of free net release on the mnml.nl net label page

Peace out

Objet : (313) so where do you buy your music (again!)?

So this is how I gather things to be:

funny enough I go to discogs.com marketplace first, because I mostly
want to buy old detroit records and out of print stuff.

for new, I do the following:

read forced exposure new releases
go to the local NYC stores (etherea first on Ave a - though it's a
little hipster minimal for me, Halcyon in brooklyn - though it's a
little hip hop for me, and only been to Dope Jams in Brooklyn once but
they had tons of KDJ and deep detroit house).

Hit up gramaphone everytime I come to Chicago.

That's about it.

Never done the clone thing, though I gather that might be great, other
than shipping and currency exchange.

ALSO!

Anyone heard the Deadbeat - Roots and Wire album? Freaking nasty.
Combination of quality reggae influenced vocal dub, really firm techno
with some echo space flavor (without the "minor, dark, sad" chord
feeling).

I rarely get into anything dubby, but this has such nice techno
recording quality. Really impressive.

I make a point of ordering CDs and the occasional 12" from the local
record store, because the owner is a friend. He lets me look at the
distributor faxes so I can order things I like.

When I order digital my favorite sites are Juno and Boomkat. I have
ordered from Beatport, but I find browsing on that site frustrating.
For one thing, the sort of things they push in their e-mails and front
page of the site are often annoying crap. For another the whole site
is a flash application, which means it's fiddly to work with. And the
audio samples of tracks sound like Real Audio circa 1998.

Boomkat is my favorite site to browse, and their front page/email
recommendations seem to come out of their own enthusiastic listening,
not some promotion/publicist BS. Juno is sometimes a bit cheaper, and
their 'editorial' content is more minimal.

I have accounts on about 5 other services that at one time or another
had an exclusive release I wanted. They don't rise to the level of
warranting recommendation, either because of price, annoying website,
or promotional e-mails that always seem to be about progressive or
trance DJs with fancy facial hair.

I will probably be getting more stuff from Electrofunk.com which seems
to have it's act together now.

I actually find a lot of stuff that's damn good that's free to
download. One excellent release that comes to mind is Christian
Bloch's release on thinner:
http://www.thinner.cc/pages/releases/releases_detail.php?id=thn075

When I run out of things to look at on TheSuperficial.com I browse
around on archive.org -- there's a huge number of self-released
musicians with stuff up there. You take pot luck on quality, but
there's good stuff if you browse patiently.

I still remember the 'Simulcraic Wonderland' LP by Ben Businovski of a

flash application, which means it's fiddly to work with. And the audio
samples of tracks sound like Real Audio circa 1998.

They don't rise to the level of
warranting recommendation, either because of price, annoying website, or
promotional e-mails that always seem to be about progressive or trance
DJs with fancy facial hair.

I will probably be getting more stuff from Electrofunk.com which seems
to have it's act together now.

I actually find a lot of stuff that's damn good that's free to download.
One excellent release that comes to mind is Christian Bloch's release on
thinner:
http://www.thinner.cc/pages/releases/releases_detail.php?id=thn075

When I run out of things to look at on TheSuperficial.com I browse
around on archive.org -- there's a huge number of self-released
musicians with stuff up there. You take pot luck on quality, but
there's good stuff if you browse patiently.

Second the e-music
lots of 313 related labels both old and new and lots of other goodies
the only problem I have with e-music is that it is subscription based
with a use it or lose it policy. One of the biggest pluses is that once
you have downloaded something, you may download it again as many times
as you like. Kind of like having a permanent backup.
I also got the Deadbeat album there and love love love it. Fantastic
dub-tech feel a la Rhythm and Sound.

I also use Traxsource occasionally for house

Have you ever tried :
http://www.zero-inch.com
They have a nice selection that suits 313ers tastes i think.
I like their listening preview system, which at last is close to a browsing
experience through a vinyl in a record shop.

And yes, i also really love the Deadbeat's "Roots and Wire" album, it has a
real homogenous approach and progressive development.

2008-12-12 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight
Vinyl - a number of local shops but it's never really for techno/house
these days
there isn't a single decent shop in town. the one remaining "dance" music
shop deals mostly online so even if you go into the shop the selection is
crap and most of it isn't even out for you to browse
and he makes a big deal out of going into his stock to retrieve something
for you in person
he's a total pain in the arse so I don't bother buying from him at all

plenty of second hand shops and antique malls and such to browse for the
funk & soul records
one really good shop for more indie rock - and I've found a few IDM type
things and ambient/experimental records there as well

I also buy on ebay - it's still worth it
one of the local shops that closed up their brick & mortar have a really
basic online catalogue that I've found a few older house/techno 12"/LPs
I've been selling a number of items via discogs myself - haven't shopped
there at all yet

for digital - Juno mostly but it depends on what I'm looking for
most of my purchases have the 3 dimensional shape

Re: (313) So, dutch people, how much did you enjoy stinkworx convextion

2007-03-04 Thread Klaas-Jan Jongsma
Hmmm you are talking about one person so i wonder who did play in
Paris, was it $tinkworx or was it Convextion? They both played in
Eindhoven, really enjoyed it, had a good time. Stinki's performance
was quite erm... shocking to say the least when a home made powerplug
converter backfired about 20 minutes into the gig at the moment he
touched something metal. This resulted in a power-outage in the venue
and they had to shut down the whole party for 15 minutes or so.
Unfortunately he had to stop his gig but what i heard was really
nice, only new stuff and he is really developing a new sound which
reminded me a lot of early DJ international stuff. Convextion played
after Stinki doing exactly what i expected from him, deep hypnotizing
techno with a model 500 touch, really really, really nice!

2007-03-05 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

yes
it was a very nice night over here in the dam
and not only because the club is one street away

the party reminded me in a way to the parties in zuid.as
we used to have several years ago - a lot of familiar faces,
also cool to see a pretty complete clone / rotterdam delegetion around
- the music was all going different areas of 'electronic music'

the (new) club finally slightly restyled, as they had before all open
window.

they have a superb sound system -
$tinkworx could only do kinda like 60% of his set, as in eindhoven
indeed kinda of laptop had gone
so hardware only - it pretty suprised me, as it was pretty old schoolish
house he did
pretty diff from his set last year here in amsterdam and Convextion was
all good and deep as described before as well

two very smooth intimate sets -

Just had an idea! People could start putting tracklists in the file titles,
something like this:

Jeff%20Mills%20At%20Super%20Conductor%20-%201.%20Jeff%20Mills%20-%20The%20Be
lls%202.%20Claude%20Young%20-%
20Angelic.mp3

I think Windows now supports 1024 character file names, so it could work (I
think - haven't actually counted), and you'd have the added
benefit of getting the tracklist to scroll in the media player. Dunno if
search bots would be able to pick out anything sensical from a huge file
name like that.

A thought, at any rate...

From that interview it seems as though he "epic'ed up" the main track

Having heard the longer clips it sounds like the Sydenhams etc of this
