Re: Still on?
Hey all. Following Jwan's instruction to be more shameless in my self promotion, this track that I shared roughly a year ago is now up for pre-order on the third release on my label. You can stream the release in full here https://category.horse/peaks-and-troughs/ and I will send DL codes now to people who buy the vinyl during pre-order. Links on that page to various vinyl purveyors who may offer more favourable shipping costs than I can offer from Bandcamp. Enjoy! Ironically, Tristan, one of my kids fished out one of your old mix CDs and it was sitting on the bookshelf… Well timed for this convo. Glad to see your name again… Gonna give your soundcloud a listen… and maybe that mix cd. h From: kent williams Sent: Tuesday, October 13, 2020 4:37 PM To: list 313 <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: Re: Still on? Paula McPheirson -- still around in Detroit?
Her discography is really brief. https://www.discogs.com/Paula-McPheirson-Lift-Me-Up/release/8899 That record is interesting to me, as it's a great example of 90s Detroit house music, and it's got contributions from Mad Mike, Buzz Goree and Mike Clark. In addition to Paula McPheirson, there's another obscure contributor, "R. Deane" who, with Goree and Clark made up "The Blowed Pimps." The label Night Groove was Buzz's label. He made 3 Records: "Lift Me Up," an Agent-X (Mike Clark) joint called "Groove Tracks Vol. 1" and "Party Time" by The House Squad (Clark & Goree)

(313) Detroit Is Back comp coming out on Still Music
This is out October 29th and soundin' mighty fine: *In The Dark - Detroit Is Backhttps://soundcloud.com/stillmusic/sets/in-the-dark-detroit-is-back/s-8Ynf5 * Back in 2005, Still Music made history by releasing one of the most acclaimed and legendary compilation about Detroit Beatdown music, somewhere between Detroit techno, house and soul. Featuring Rick Wilhite, Delano Smith, Marcellus Pittman, Mike Huckaby, Amp Fiddler and a few more, In The Dark: The Soul Of Detroit showcased a pool of talents that is now established worldwide. Highly sought after, In The Dark was repressed in 2012 and was an immediate success. This October, Still Music is proud to present the follow up to this great compilation: In The Dark: Detroit Is Back. Diving again in Detroit's most talented pool of underground artists, In The Dark: Detroit Is Back brings to the foreground 24 tracks (DCD) produced by the who's who of Detroit's thriving electronic music scene. Marcellus Pittman, Delano Smith, Rick Wilhite, Amp Fiddler and Keith Worthy are back along with a few newcomers and familiar names: Terrence Dixon, Dj 3000, Gerald Mitchell, Alex Israel, Craig Huckaby (Mike's brother), Patrice Scott, Reggie Dokes and a lot more. Like its predecessor, In The Dark: Detroit Is Back, focuses on techno, soul and house, it is a journey through Detroit's basement clubs, studios and warehouses, an uncompromising view of one of the most progressive music city in the world. (313) Detnews: Still spinning Vinyl records firm presses on
http://www.detnews.com/article/20090502/BIZ/905020367/1001/Vinyl-records-firm-presses-on Still spinning Vinyl records firm presses on Louis Aguilar / The Detroit News Detroit -- If ever a National Register of Historic, Cool, Hard-core, 20th-Century Machinery is created, Archer Record Pressing would be a landmark. Archer is one of the last companies in the world still making vinyl records -- a technology the corporate music industry decided to banish four decades ago. This third-generation family business doesn't fear the death of vinyl: There's always a subculture of musicians that want their work on albums. Archer fears its massive record machines will die. And the machines constantly break down. We rely on the best of 1970s technology, said Joe Archer, whose father Norm, started the business in 1965. The company has no choice. The last record-making machine is believed to have been made in 1986, according to various Web sites dedicated to vinyl records. The five presses at Archer were bought from the other record press companies that went under decades ago. A sole company in North America sells the specialized parts for the machines. At its core, a record-making machine is a hydraulic press with a closing force of 100 tons. It has steam pipes, tubes, buttons, motors, molds and mechanical doo-dads specific to mass-producing vinyl. In operation, the machines produce a kind of score of heavy industry sounds. The boom of the press can be heard a half- block away. There's a rhythm of hissing steam, a hydraulic whoosh, a high-pitched metallic slice, the low rumble of a generator. Few know how to fix the record machines. One is Mike Archer, 43, who learned by growing up watching Joe, his father, fix them. It's a daily battle, Mike Archer said. They're finicky machines. If your scrap rate starts going up, you start looking at the press and say, 'All right, what are you doing to me today?' Scrap rate refers to the number of defective records. You try to isolate what's happening and narrow it down, narrow it down. Is it pneumatic? Electrical? Steam? Most times, it's an issue that takes two or three minutes to deal with. Sometimes, you can scratch your head for two or three hours. Once every couple months, you can feel like the sky is falling. It is unclear how many record-making companies still exist. Web sites count between eight and 10 worldwide, and three to five in the United States. Mike Archer knows of two that went under during the past year because their aging owners could not find anyone who wanted to take them over. Archer has two full-time employees, including 25-year veteran Ken Moravcik. But only Mike and Joe know how to fix the machines. It would be a steep learning curve, but you could do it, Mike Archer said. It's too bad we can't get some apprenticeship program going. Archer Record Pressing is a landmark to some, including employee Andy Garcia, 33, a devotee of Detroit techno music. It's almost holy to me, he said. Archer Records has survived thanks in no small part to the many Detroit techno artists who rely on vinyl to spin during their performances. Virtually every major Detroit techno artist, who often has their own record label, relies on Archer. Every album I ever (bought) had Archer Record on it, said Garcia, who grew up in Anderson, Ind. When I moved to Detroit, I begged for a job here. I remember when I first came, I thought the place would be a little more spectacular. Detroit's like that: It's spectacular where it counts. Another fan is longtime client Theo Parrish, an international techno artist whose label Sound Signature has had more than 30 albums made at Archer. Some of the most amazing dance records that have come out in the last 10 years have come out of this place, Parrish said. He often stops by Archer when his albums are being pressed. My thoughts are being translated into the physical universe right there. It's beautiful to see. Parrish has been so moved by the sounds of the machines that he's producing a song based on them. That's one of the hearts of industrial Detroit to me, he said. Archer has enjoyed a recent bounce in sales, although the owners decline to reveal specific figures. The iPod and file-sharing have actually been good to us. Some artists, especially independent rock bands, always want to ensure that enough people are actually buying their product, instead of downloading it for free, Mike Archer said. Vinyl will always be around. Whether there will be someone who has the will to mass-produce them? It can be done. But if someone will do it? That's a good question.
(313) Anyone Still Listen To Sonic Sunset?
To balance out some of my recent negativity, I'll link to some of my favorite all-time music, ever. http://www.sonicsunset.com/ For those of you who aren't familiar, Sonic Sunset was a long-running radio show here in Chicago that featured some amazing music for many years. Expect deep new sounds alongside timeless classics - from techno, electro, detroit/chicago house, underground disco machine funk and weird nu-wave / italo / funk / soul dusties that slipped through the cracks of time (and fell onto our turntables). I have yet to find two people with better music taste, as far as I'm concerned. Just scroll down the main page for a few minutes and review the tracklists for most of the shows. You've got everything from Funk/Soul music to Japan to Kraftwerk to Atkins. It really is good stuff. The shows usually run along a theme, so you might have a Larry Heard special or B12 records special, but it's always good stuff. Anyway it's brought me many hours of good listening, hope it does for some of you who aren't familiar with it as well. -Arturo

what do peeps think about the still music comp? I bought a copy. There's deffo some strong stuff on there but I've not had chance to listen to it that much. what do peeps think about the still music comp? i can't tell much from the online clips i've heard. the best of *that kind of stuff* ('scuse the generalisations) can be original, hella funky deep, but unfortunately a lot of it sounds weak cliched. the beatdown comp was a bit like that, some really cool stuff, some not so cool. philski still loving the delsin comp

actually, got to say that Ron Trent's mix is not the best track on the 12, don't get me wrong, it's good (though not his best by any means), but 'Happiness For All' is a really wonderful peice of music with that particularly unique feel that Patchworks seem to be able to conjure. Well, I say remix, but it's more like Amp dug the track, took it into the studio, wrote a completely new 'Amp Fiddler' version with his own new lyrics and turned it into a warm Mahogani bump. Not bad, eh? and it's on-topic because it says detroit in there so, : p alex _ - End of message text This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers. RE: (313) amp fiddler on Still Music
Speaking of Amp Fiddler keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming release on new label run out of Chicago called STILL MUSIC. The debut will be a cool deep house affiar called The Sugar EP by jazzy French house guys Patchworks, and features an Amp Fiddler remix of the title track! Really nice if you like that whole deep detroit house sound, but the production is a bit cleaner and has a more overt use of jazz instruments and sounds. A class production that will appeal to fans of deeper house like kdj, harmonie park, elevate, deepside / st. germain, glasgow underground, neroli, etc. Peace, Matt MacQueen

While |Prince was a huge influence, Jimi built the world's most innovative |recording studio, Electric Ladyland Studios, in 1968 (I think) and |up until |very recently...it remained one of THE most innovative recording studios |because of his obsession with recording and performing technology as THE |means to get down on tape the sounds he had in his head. | |Secondarily and perhaps without most artists even realizing this |fact would |be Stevie Wonder. His obsession with electronic keyboards evolved |into the |very first 'do everything yourself' recording studio back in the 70's. I |recall Stevie talking about how and why he records most every track in a |song he's composing all by himself. Pretty much the same reason as Jimi's |that he knew what sound(s) he wanted and was often frustrated in trying to |communicate it to an engineer or musician in order to obtain it. | |He felt that with the age of the synthesizer a songwriter/composer had the |ability to personalize their music and sound unlike anything that had come |before...even though the same notes in a scale were present...they |had never |before sound like THAT. Still Moby. help us, help us
placing this blame on moby for stealing Black music is wrong. i think one of the reasons Moby's Play seems so offensive to some is that his use of other people's music goes way beyond what we normally consider the 'fair use', to use a term often associated with copyright disputes. in other words, using brief samples to create a work that is essentially original has come to seem normal, acceptable, fair use of other people's music. Moby's samples are not brief, and his songs rely so heavily on his source material that his end result is not substantially original. Were the sampled material by Madonna, it would be called a re-mix, and Madonna would get her name in bigger letters than Moby on the record jacket, were Moby even permitted to use the material. The fact that his remix project exploits people whose musicianship is obviously more compelling than Moby's makes his success seem unfair. I think of Steve Reich's It's Gonna Rain, which has a long loop of an African-American preacher throughout -- I've never heard anyone complain about that. perhaps its just less mainstream and therefore attracts less attention, but i think the actual reason is that Reich's piece is a total creative transformation of the source material. I don't think there can be exact guidelines for who is allowed to quote who. music will always draw from within and without of whatever social milieu it is created in. I totally believe in the cross fertilization of different musical styles. but i find moby's play a bit crass. kurt
Still Moby. help us, help us
- Original Message - From: laura gavoor [EMAIL PROTECTED] Moby is a righteously smart dude. agreed. hes' also a very good musician. He's been utilizing OP talent and soul and black artist's music and skills for some time now. He's ALWAYS wanted to be a rock star whether he was shmoozing our scene/family or not. He's another guy who has and continues to climb the rockstar stairway to heaven on the backs of FAR more talented people of color. Whether you wish to partake in yet another black/white discussion of our music...the facts remain self-evident, Moby's BIGGEST HIT is not only a sample of a black blues artist but is also a direct rip-off of a far more ingenius and truly unique white artist who has taken the influence of black dance music artists and married that devotion to his own passion thereby creating something unique...the artist is St. Germain and the track in question is Alabama Blues. placing this blame on moby for stealing Black music is wrong. if you are going to blame someone blame Alen Lomax he went around the south in the 1920-1950 going to prisions and share croppers houses recording them on his protable record cutter. but you never heard muddy waters bi**h about him. (now leadbelly was a differnt story he was used up by lomax and the record comp ilk until he died). so I dont see how moby was stealing music.jist because he white?? thats like saying stevie ray vahun stole the blues from bb king. and the blue jazz cats are about doing standards all the artist cover one an other. how many other artist are doing blues laced techno (I'm a little curious if there are others. but I'm sure there are and probby before moby did it to???) there are also no blues artist samples. moby plays most of the insturments on play so who is he rippin off himself? An d as for Mute records, what black artists do they have?? you know in Europe they don't have the racism problems we have here in america(they have it but not as intense.). so not having a black or minority artist is not as big as a deal as here. but like one list member told me everybody is a racist. I disagree racism is a learned expression ussually from ones parents or close family member. anyways I'm so sick or the race issue this list is about music and not who stole what. was it Juan Atkins who said he was trying to imatate kraftwerk or was it derrick? I know afrika bambaataa was hudge on them. a beat is a beat and if you don't have rhythm you suck(lol). it does not matter what race or gender you still will be a rhythmless wonder. moby fact every song on play has been licensed in some fashion. good for him. I think he knows that pop star stardom is like it's over before you know it. please don't take my response a moby defense but I think moby is doing what he wants and I am getting tired of the moby pro/con posts that have been plaguing the list for the past 2 weeks for not liking him a lot of people sure talk about him allot. a very lot! my pro/con moby post. so please dont take it personially. it's jist music and weather you like it or not is your opion and this above is mine. is moby still techno
i am no trainspotter since '85 like some peeps on this list and i don't know moby personally like others. to tell the truth i don't even own any of moby's music. the thing that i do know is that is too easy to hit a giant with a rock. when people expose themselves through art, music, or other mediums they inherently make themselves subject to criticisms, rejection, and ridicule. i feel that instead of evaluating moby's down-ness with the present form of techno music with snobby ideas of purity we should just support the artists that each of us enjoy with our pocketbooks and purses and let the man do what he wants...let mtv do what it wants...let the massive corporate music industry do what it wants! the only continuous thing that i have noticed in my mere 21 years is that the saying you don't know what you got till its gone is true. i relate this to music and art in general by saying that real change in opinions and attitudes about art and music takes place in baby steps and minute advancements. its seems to this humble man that most great artists are only noticed in a posthumous manner because of the shear volume of 'art' being produced at any given time. i feel that we are a product of a commercial world where instant satisfaction is only down the road. in this manner i think that fans of techno music want immediate recognition of the complexity of seemingly simple music. they want recognition and validation. i just don't think that the world will be ready to give that to us. this is all just my opinion...no harm no foul -sam __ Do You Yahoo!? Hello, this is way ot, but yeah he was in flipper. I seriously doubt he was working with Ed Ralske in UVS. I do not think that UVS was a british band. Ed is doing microsound these days and running a lable called Mau Mau International. I believe that he is based in the mid-west these days. geez, my indie roots are showing... take care, Mike From: Gwendal Cobert [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Jenny Cigarettes' [EMAIL PROTECTED],'DETROIT' 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] is moby still Techno Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 11:30:22 +0100 punk band Flipper? This is funny because when I interviewed him he denied being a memeber of Flipper. He said he was just filling in while someone was doing their time in jail (sorry, I don't know the name of the guy). Moby told me that this is another thing that people have read in the press that is misconstrued. This was basically how the entire interview went... he was very evasive. It was the worst 30 minutes I've ever had to spend with someone. But that's beside the point. Re: [313] is moby still Techno
The only problem I might say I have with Moby, and not that I really lose any sleep over it, but since its come up, is that he has released some solid techno tunes in the past. His stuff as Voodoo child was wicked at the time, but I remember reading an interview with him where he stated he hated techno and was going back to his punk roots. Now whether or not he has since returned to the bare fringes of the techno genre because his punk stuff didn't sell, despite slagging it off, is another debate that, I guess, only he could really answer. If he did, well yeah, he's a sell out. But if not, well fair play to him, his music is making money, hes an NME pin up, I just doubt that anyone who used to be into him gives a toss about it. - Original Message - From: M Elliot-Knight [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Friday, March 23, 2001 3:33 PM Subject: RE: [313] is moby still Techno This is funny because when I interviewed him he denied being a memeber of Flipper. Re: [313] is moby still Techno
Wow, Voodoo Child was Moby? I had no idea... what a list!!! I'm always learning something new. :) Ok, that brings forth this question... I have a Voodoo Child vinyl (circa 1991 I think) titled Voodoo Child Remixes on Instinct (cat. no. EX-232)... the label says Written, produced, arranged by Richard M. Hall. Is this Moby's actual name, another alias, or another individual altogether? Just wondering for the sake of historical accuracy. Thanks. And in case anyone decides to ask, no I will not sell it! Gwendal Ran a google search, and this would suggest that he did: quote Q: You were in a hardcore band a few years ago, weren't you? MOBY: A band called the Vatican Commando's. I've been involved with so many weird things... I sang with Flipper for a few days, I played with Ultra Vivid Scene for a while... /quote From: http://www.spoil.org/issue5/moby/moby_c1.html
