i also encounter such problem specially with office 2007 and 2010.
Apart from above given solution, you can try one more thing.
Try to turn off the jaws with insert+win+f4. And restart the jaws again.

Re: [AI] Excel sheets and data

2012-02-21 Thread Suman Dogra
Strange problem. I think in this case only a pure guess solution can helpyou!!!
One reason could be that your Excel would have gone out of focus. It
happens usually while working on windows. If this happens, you can
use ALT+TAB to gain focus back to Excel. You can also make changes to
focus changes in the JAWS settings. in that case JAWS informs you on
loss of focus.
or, you may find your sheets with the command cTRL+SHIFT+S.
Or, with JAWS sometimes , it happens that when you loose the focus of
the cell that you were working on, it becomes difficult to find the
cell with data with ARROWS. In that case you can use the command
CTRL+SHIFT+D to list the cells with data for you. Press ENTER on any
of the item in the list and you will find your data.

Note pad is for text files whereas word pad used to creat simple word

Dear Access India Friends,

ice to know about the rally but this is not the first rally of its
kind in Pune. There was a similar rally held where we had
participated from Mumbai and some of our friends from Gujarat were
also present. I had won the navigational rally. This is just for

Re: [AI] For the 1st time, car rally for visually impaired in Pune

2012-02-21 Thread Ketan Kothari
Dear Access India Friends,

ice to know about the rally but this is not the first rally of its
kind in Pune. There was a similar rally held where we had
participated from Mumbai and some of our friends from Gujarat were
also present. I had won the navigational rally. This is just for
your information.

[AI] For the 1st time, car rally for visually impaired in Pune

2012-02-21 Thread avinash shahi
Friends those who are in Pune, get registered yourselves.

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/for-the-1st-time-car-rally-for-visually-impaired-in-city/915113/0

Organisers of the event call it a “rally with a difference” and indeed
it is one. On March 4, Pune will witness its first car rally for the
visually impaired. The rally, which will be flagged off at 8 am from
Phoenix Market City Mall, Kalyani Nagar, is expected to get
registrations from around 125 drivers. The rally will follow a strict
pattern - the participants will drive the car, while a visually
impaired navigator in the car will direct the driver by reading
through an instruction manual written in Braille.
The participants will have no clue of the route before the start. The
driver will act only in accordance with his visually impaired
partner’s instructions. “The navigator will read the Braille
instructions and direct the driver on where to turn, what speed to go
at and for how much distance,” said Shivam Arren of Poona United Round
Table 144, which is organising the rally.

Similar rallies have earlier been organised in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai,
Kolkata, Nagpur, Nashik and so on, while Pune enters the list this
year.

The rally will cover nearly 65 km. “It will consider the factors of
time, speed and distance, but it is a rally and not a race,” said
Arren. The route will have 10 check points in place for the cars. To
regulate the speeds of the vehicles and discourage undue competition,
some strictures have been put in place. At the flag-off, all the cars
will hit the road in the matter of a minute. On the basis of this,
every car will have an assigned time to reach every check point. Both
early and late arrivals will be penalised, the former more heavily.

The rally has been planned with multiple objectives in mind. It will
raise funds for the Poona Blind Men’s Association, through entry fee
and sponsorship. “The participants will also get to interact with a
visually impaired person throughout the journey, a chance they may not
otherwise get. It will also help boost the confidence of the
navigators,” added Arren.

The rally has already received around 50 registrations, and the
organisers are in the process of obtaining requisite traffic and
police permissions. The participants will drive their own cars at the
event. Every participant will be awarded a certificate, while the top
three arrivals will be given trophies.

All you have to do is collect maximum fruits without banging into a
wall. When you approach a fruit, follow the sounds and choose your
direction carefully,"
says 22-year-old Bhavesh Patel, as he coaxes and challenges
half-a-dozen visually-impaired kids to play a game of Snake 3D
- a version of that iconic game that most Indians were addicted to in
the early days of the telecom revolution.

Patel was born blind, but he can play this game with his sense of
hearing: when the snake approaches the walls, a swooshing sound gets
louder, warning
players.

The Game At the Techshare Conference 2012, the first-ever
Accessibility and Disability conference to be organised in India,
several innovations like these were
on display. "Disability is a boring subject. I am tired of the drab
stuff and I thought gaming would be a welcome change to the entire
setting," says
Shilpi Kapoor,
MD of BarrierBreak Technologies,
who along with Royal National Institute of Blind
people (RNIB) UK organised the event.

Among other things, BarrierBreak runs a website signntalk.com, which
helps the hearing impaired communicate with the rest of the world
using sign language.
Basically, when a deaf person wants to make a call to a contact, he
logs on to the site and is connected to an interpreter. The
interpreter then facilitates
a conversation between the deaf person and the contact by interpreting
the latter's talk through a video link using sign language. It's not
rocket science,
but a great implementation of simple technology.

The Enablers

Kapoor is not the only social entrepreneur in this space. Take
51-year-old Ferdinand Rodricks, who runs Ferro Equip out of Mumbai. "I
helped customise a Fiat Padmini in 1982 for a friend afflicted by
polio. Since then, I have tried to help people with different kinds
of disabilities," says Rodricks for whom helping the disabled is a
hobby, not a commercial operation. In three decades, Ferro Equip has
designed swimming
pool hoists, wheelchair hoists, portable ramps and services like
vehicle customisation and making homes disabled friendly.

Rodricks proudest moment came when Stephen Hawking visited India and
he got the opportunity to customise his vehicle. But the most
emotional encounter was with a double amputee who wanted to drive a
gypsy. "I not only customised his vehicle, but also taught him to
drive," he says.

Or take MN Cooper, CMD of Pune-headquartered Modular InfoTech which
provides services and products for the visually impaired like Braille
software and
printing solutions. His Shree-Lipi Braille conversion software
converts text composed for sighted persons to Braille in all Indian
languages and English and vice-versa. "We have used language experts
from all over the country," says the 67-year-old.

The Blind Side

But why develop solutions for this market at all? Sadly, the numbers
are huge. According to the World Report on Disability 2011, a little
less than 15%,
or 1 billion, of the world's population is living with some form of
disability. In India, the number is estimated to be 70 million. Of
these, less than
1% has access to assistive technology. "There are a billion people
today with one or more disability. Their talents are not being
harnessed and this is
a huge loss of opportunity for the world economy," says Rob Sinclair,
chief accessibility officer at Microsoft, who has been involved with
the Redmond giant's accessibility effort since 1997.

with best regards,
Bhavesh.

Re: [AI] a ribbon problem in excel

2012-02-21 Thread Amiyo Biswas
If you are using Jaws 12 or 13, use virtual ribbon. Otherwise it is very
difficult to remember all these new key tips. However, when virtual ribbon
is active, Jaws announces the key tip when you have reached the actual
submenu. When virtual ribbon is inactive, it is impossible to locate the
desired choice or submenu without the key tip.

If you remember the office 2003 key shortcuts, they still work. For
instance, use Ctrl+1 or Alt+o followed by e for format cell dialogue box.
The same dialogue box can be launched from the format cell button at the
bottom of the font submenu.

Subject: [AI] a ribbon problem in excel

Friends I am facing a strange problem regarding m s excel 2007. It is
regarding ribbons. When I minimize the ribbons by pressing application key
then I am able to use the short cut key like alt+h, o. for formatting the
cell height, etcetra. But it does not read the ribbon shortcuts like when
you are on coppy option then it should read ctrl + c. and when I uncheck
the minimize the option then it reads shortcut keys but for example if I
press alt+h, o. to go to cell format then after pressing alt+h and then o
instead of going to format it types the letter o in the active cell.

Now I want the jaws to announce the shortcut while navigating through
ribbon and it should alouve me to access me the shortcut key commands. It
is the problem with only excel and all other application like word and
powerpoint works very well. For your better understanding I am using x.p.

yes you can do it. but the jaws will not report the right color. do the
 following things:
1 select the cell E5 then go to home tab by pressing alt+h.
2by pressing tab key go to stile tool bar and select conditional
 formatting.and hit enter.
3select heighlight cell rools submenu and hit enter.
4 select >then and hit enter and type your value 80 in your case.
5 now press tab key ones and select the color of your choice to be
displayed if figure is >then 80.
6 now press tab ones and press enter on ok button.
now you will notice that when the value of cell is >80 then the color of
cell will be of your choice .
now focose on the same cell follow the same steps above with little
 chainges.
in step 4 we had selected >then but here select >>> and

type the value as 81 in your case and select the color of your choice

Hi,

Mark all option comes in sub menu of more option. There you can select
mark all option and then again press key 1 and go to action sub menu,
and there you find delete option and select it.

Note pad is for text files whereas word pad used to creat simple word
files that can be opened with microsoft word. The trouble is that it
only has basic typing functions and you need microsoft or open office
to perform advanced editing functions.

Re: [AI] A Braille application that's for everyone

2012-02-21 Thread khuzaima
Hi all,

The news is great and would like to ask a few things here. The intention is
not to pose questions without doing some work on this but to tell that there
is more than one needs to ask.

1. this is suitable for screens that are large in Size,
2. mobile phones are out of question because of this,
3. to type one alphabet or no I have to tap at least once (for letter a) or
more for other no's alphabets.
4. the no of taps that are required shall be less if we just give an qwerty
keypad.
5. it says that you can type in conjunction with some other application as
if it were to be substitute for the however as per the search I conducted
this is not the case as the entire app covers the screen and the screen is
divided into 6 parts with 6 colored dots in each part and when you tap it
considers as the part selected.

There is a simple way is what I know and shall be posting to the group soon.
I am an Android App developer and hence I have expressed my views as per my
knowledge.

Regards,

Khuzaima S Sadriwala

A Braille application that's for everyone

A simple cellphone app created to let the blind type could also let
sighted users text on their phone while doing other tasks like
walking, watching TV, socialising or even secretly during a meeting

Imagine if cellphone users could text a note under the table during a
meeting without anyone being the wiser. Mobile gadget users might also
be enabled to text while walking or socialising without taking their
eyes off what they're doing.

Georgia Tech researchers have built a prototype app for touchscreen
devices. "Research has shown that chorded, or gesture-based, texting
is a viable solution for eyes-free texting in the future, making
obsolete the need for users to look at their devices while inputting
text on them," said Mario Romero, the project's principal
investigator.

The free app, called BrailleTouch, incorporates the Braille writing
system used by the visually impaired. It has been conceived as a
texting tool for any of the millions of smartphone phone users
worldwide. Early studies with visually impaired participants
proficient in Braille typing have demonstrated that users can input at
least six times the number of words per minute compared to other
prototypes for eyes-free texting. Users reach up to 32 words per
minute with 92 per cent accuracy with the prototype app for the
iPhone.

For sighted users, the team is exploring how the app could be a
universal eyes-free texting app that replaces QWERTY keyboards.

The app uses a gesture-based solution by turning the touchscreen into
a soft-touch keyboard programmed for Braille and requiring only six
keys, making it a practical solution.

The key feature of the BrailleTouch is the use of the six-key config
so that the keyboard fits on the screen and users keep their fingers
in a relatively fixed position while texting. This design allows users
to hold their device with the screen facing away from them - cradling
the device with their palms to type with a majority of their fingers,
identical to typing Braille on a standard keyboard

Re: [AI] need audio to text converter.

2012-02-21 Thread Doris and Chris
Waht you want is voice recognition software such as Dragon Naturally
speaking. If Dragon is to be used in combination with a screenreader,
some middleware software is required or at least recommended but this
is a quite costly combination.

While I am still on windows xp myself, I hear that the voice
recognition built into windows vista and up is quite usable. So this
is where I would start.

If your friend has a speech impediment on top of his physical
disability, "discreet" voice recognition is to be preferred over
natural recognition. Discreet voice recognition is the older variant
of voice recognition where the speaker pauses between each word,
making it easier for the system to recognize the words. "Dragon
Dictate" used to use discreet speech. I do not know if it is still
being sold. Some also say, though, that the latest versions of Dragon
Naturally Speaking are usable by people with a speech impediment
because the voice recognition has become perfect enough to function despite.

[AI] Win7 tips and tricks

2012-02-21 Thread Kotian, H P
Hello
Someone sent this across and I trust it may interest members.
Harish Kotian.
85 Windows 7 tips, tricks and secrets

 1. Problem Steps Recorder

As the local PC guru you're probably very used to friends and family asking for
help with their computer problems, yet having no idea how to clearly describe
what's going on. It's frustrating, but Microsoft feels your pain, and Windows 7
will include an excellent new solution in the Problem Steps Recorder.

When any app starts misbehaving under Windows 7 then all your friends need do
is click Start, type PSR and press Enter, then click Start Record. If they
then work through whatever they're doing then the Problem Steps Recorder will
record every click and keypress, take screen grabs, and package everything
up into a single zipped MHTML file when they're finished, ready for emailing to
you. It's quick, easy and effective, and will save you hours of troubleshooting
time.

2. Burn images

Windows 7 finally introduces a feature that other operating systems have had
for years - the ability to burn ISO images to CDs or DVDs. And it couldn't
be much easier to use. Just double-click the ISO image, choose the drive with
the blank disc, click Burn and watch as your disc is created.

3. Create and mount VHD files

Microsoft's Virtual PC creates its virtual machine hard drives in VHD files,
and Windows 7 can now mount these directly so you can access them in the host
system. Click Start, type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter, then click Action >
Attach VHD and choose the file you'd like to mount. It will then appear as
a virtual drive in Explorer and can be accessed, copied or written just like
any other drive.

Click Action > Create VHD and you can now create a new virtual drive of your
own (right-click it, select Initialise Disk, and after it's set up right-click
the unallocated space and select New Simple Volume to set this up). Again,
you'll be left with a virtual drive that behaves just like any other, where
you can drag and drop files, install programs, test partitioning software or do
whatever you like. But it's actually just this VHD file on your real hard
drive which you can easily back up or share with others. Right-click the disk
(that's the left-hand label that says "Disk 2" or whatever) and select Detach
VHD to remove it.

The command line DISKPART utility has also been upgraded with tools to detach a
VHD file, and an EXPAND command to increase a virtual disk's maximum size.
Don't play around with this unless you know what you're doing, though - it's
all too easy to trash your system.

4. Troubleshoot problems

If some part of Windows 7 is behaving strangely, and you don't know why, then
click Control Panel > Find and fix problems (or 'Troubleshooting') to access
the new troubleshooting packs. These are simple wizards that will resolve
common problems, check your settings, clean up your system and more.

5. Startup repair

If you've downloaded Windows 7 (and even if you haven't) it's a good idea to
create a system repair disc straight away in case you run into problems booting
the OS later on. Click Start > Maintenance > Create a System Repair Disc, and
let Windows 7 build a bootable emergency disc. If the worst does happen then
it could be the only way to get your PC running again.

6. Take control

Tired of the kids installing dubious software or running applications you'd
rather they left alone? AppLocker is a new Windows 7 feature that ensures users
can only run the programs you specify. Don't worry, that's easier to set up
than it sounds: you can create a rule to allow everything signed by a particular
publisher, so choose Microsoft, say, and that one rule will let you run all
signed Microsoft applications. Launch GPEDIT.MSC and go to Computer
Configuration
> Windows Settings > Security Settings > Application Control Policies >
> AppLocker to get a feel for how this works.

7. Calculate more

At first glance the Windows 7 calculator looks just like Vista's version, but
explore the Mode menu and you'll see powerful new Statistics and Programmer
views. And if you're clueless about bitwise manipulation, then try the Options
menu instead. This offers many different unit conversions (length, weight,
volume and more), date calculations (how many days between two dates?), and
spreadsheet-type templates to help you calculate vehicle mileage, mortgage
rates and more.

Don't take any Windows 7 applet at face value, then - there are some very
powerful new features hidden in the background. Be sure to explore every option
in all Windows applets to ensure you don't miss anything important.

Windows 7 calculator

CALCULATE MORE: The new Calculator is packed with useful features and
functionality

8. Switch to a projector

Windows 7 now provides a standard way to switch your display from one monitor
to another, or a projector - just press Win+P or run DisplaySwitch.exe and
choose your preferred display. (This will have no effect if you've o
