Re: [AI] Query regarding human assistance with AirAsia at the Bangalore Airport

2019-05-14 Thread john clayton
Hi,
Last year, I asked the same thing on this list, and most people suggested
that I should get in touch with the CS of the airlines I was flying with
and let them know that I was blind/ visually impaired, and I would be
needing asisstence and they would take care of the rest, and they were
right.
Thank you guys, btw. The experience was so awesome, that I was rather
surprised and really, traveling/ flying alone is the easiest thing, ever.
Its the clocest to hassel free travel that you are likely to come across
being blind.

That was my first time flying/ traveling alone, so I was a bit aprihencive
to be sure, but it all went very smoothly!
I have no clue if it varys with the different airlines, as I flew with
indigo back then, and based on the excellent experience have been flying
with them ever since.
I was flyingg from Mumbai to kolkata and back, whilst both the times they
were really nice, the mumbai to kolkata flight was something else entirely.
When I asked for asisstence at the reservation counter, they did call a
staffer to help me out, but the manager Pervaiz if I remember right came
around himself, and decided that he would escort me instead.
He zoomed me through the whole boarding process, was dam fine and
explained stuff, and had my seat upgraded, talk about being nice!
The cabin crew from Mumbai to Kolkata were very nice and really
welcomeing, and went into rather detailed explanation of stuff as I
suppose they must, and were the dam most friendly bunch of hostess's I have
ever come across.though the kolkata to mumbai crew were rather snooty not
really unproffessional though, but not as warm and friendly, but then I was
too tired to give a dam. :D
So yeah, informing in advance isn't necessary, but can be good if you do
it, and stuff ought to go decently well from there on, fingers crossed, of
course.
Do let us know how it goes for you

[AI] Voting experience

Hello friends!

With utmost humility do I wish to underscore the need for each one of
us to exercise due diligence and care to ensure that the information
we share with each other is correct albeit I do grant that to err is
human.

I am saying this against the backdrop of two points made by a friend
in two of his mails in the current chain of correspondence on voting
experience.

In the first place, I wish to state that there is no provision of
online voting for NRIs as stated by a friend in one of his mails. Only
those Indians who are officers and/or employees of the Govt. of India
and who are posted outside the country, such as, in the embassies or
high Commissions can vote, not online as erroneously stated by him,
but through postal ballot. Non-resident Indians other than this set of
people can not vote even by postal ballot. Such people, if they wish
to exercise their franchise, must come to India. There is no other
choice. Besides, those working in the defense forces can cast their
votes through postal ballot if they are posted out of the constituency
where their name figures on the voters list.

Secondly, the first general elections were held not in 1951 but in
1951-52. To be more precise, the said general elections were held from
25th October, 1951 to 21 February, 1952.

Thanks
mantosh Kumar

Hi there,

The app doesn't work here on my Nokia 6.1 Plus and a friend's phone
MotoG 5 Plus. As soon as we ask the app to send a voice message to
someone, it opens the whatsapp but just hangs there. There is no way to
come out of the app except turning off the screen. After installing this
app, the Talkback too, is behaving viard. It no more says "Home screen
One of XXX" when coming back to home screen from any app. I think the
app needs to be updated ASAP and get checked on multiple devices before
final release.

language

It's called Ranchhod Sees the World and it's an illustration picture book about
Ranchhod Soni, a visually impaired teacher in Gujarat, who has not disability
come in the way of discovering new things.

Bringing his story alive in a vivid and vibrant way for the first time is the
Beyond Braille series which claims to offer breakthrough research to help
visually impaired people visualise and imagine the world.

This is perhaps the first time, says Nupur Agarwal,Founder, Beyond Braille that
visually impaired readers would get the opportunity to feel the shapes of
objects/figures in the pictures. The idea was triggered while Nupur was doing
her Masters at CEPT University in Ahmedabad.

I worked on the concept of a tactile picture book for the visually impaired
community, exploring and developing it further with different mediums and
materials, I created a 3D printed and embossed version of the illustration
picture book for the visually impaired community. It opens the gate of
potential possibilities for the community to explore picture books like never
before. This would improve their learning, speed and efficiency, thereby
improving their quality of living. Moreover, this invention would make the
learning process more enjoyable. - Nupur Agarwal, Founder, Beyond Braille

Nupur also hopes that the series will also help raise awareness about the
community as an "equally abled" group rather than disabled or a distinct group.

"The idea of making it a children's book was so to instill the idea of equality
from the start and the need to build an inclusive world", she says.
This, Nupur, felt was important as experience has shown that many non-disabled
people are unsure, even scared, of interacting with people with disabilities.

Behind the final creation lay months of intense research by Nupur and her team
in finding the best materials, Braille text and other methods.
Initially, she created the book manually with the use of thread as the primary
material. "After the project, I took a year's break when I worked as a designer
and thought of ways to mass produce this. I found a 3D designer and printer who
were willing to collaborate," she adds.

She simultaneously worked on the storytelling, going through the process of
capturing the story, rhyming it, reading it, and imagining it from a child's
perspective.

"The children were so fascinated when their fingertips touched and felt the
illustrations for the first time", says Vidhi Tulsyan, a project volunteer.
"This was my first time working with visually impaired kids and it was all very
new and refreshing. We went to the blind school in Surat, interacted with kids
there and they were really into the project. It feels great to be a part of
this."

Re: [AI] Louie - New screen reader

2019-05-14 Thread Satguru Rathi

Subject: [AI] Louie - New screen reader

Hi I am forwarding this info as received

Hello, there is new Screen reader, here is description and end with link :

Hi, I am Pramit, I am visually impaired and have a great drive to build an
accessibility app that will work really well for me and hopefully for all my
other visually impaired friends as well.

I do hope that my belief, passion, and energy has resulted in an app which you
will find useful, easy to use and productivity-boosting. I sincerely believe
that friendly accessibility apps like Louie Voice Enable can help us navigate
life with joy and ease.

Strongly suggest that you take a look at the Louie Demo Video attached here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99ZpHb5rt4I

Louie has been designed to cater to the widely varying needs of its users
around the world. Thus Louie Voice Enable can work:
- With or without a screen reader
- With varying verbosity and handholding modes
- With intuitive voice commands, no need to memorize!

Currently, we have voice enabled WhatsApp - and many more apps are going to
follow soon. Please tell us which app we should voice enable next (at -
pra...@louievoice.com )

Of course, there is still a lot of work to be done on Louie Voice Enable. I
would be grateful for your comments, suggestions, feedback, and support. Kindly
feel free to reach out to me at pra...@louievoice.com

What is Louie all about?

Louie is really two apps in one. Louie Voice Enable helps the user control an
app like WhatsApp completely through voice commands. Louie Screen Reader is
extremely simple to use, due to its user interface that is exactly like that of
an Android.

Why the name "Louie"?

Louis Braille, the inventor of braille, is the inspiration behind naming this app
"Louie". Hoping that with your help, Louie Voice will also be able to create a
meaningful impact to our lives.

Hakuna Matata (no worries & joy to you)
WHAT'S NEW
1. Now turning Louie ON & OFF is extremely simple. Just click on the buttons in
the Notification panel.
2. A completely customized user experience provided through its smart
auto-configuration.
3. WhatsApp now voice-enabled at an enhanced level.
4. Voice commands added to control listening for hot-word “Hey Louie”

Hi Ankit
That sounds comforting regarding privacy. However, can you let us know of some
scenarios where we can use it apart from knowing about PWD act and what other

This can help us where and how to explore this tool.

Dear Harish.

Firstly, thank you. We appreciate you taking time from your busy schedule to
try Mera Mitra & to send in your inputs.
We are glad that you find the solution interesting and called it a step in the
right direction. Our team is working to get new features to make Mera Mitra
experience better & useful for the community.
Mera Mitra currently doesn’t have support for “send this info via email”.
However, our team is already working on incorporating this feature and we
shall keep you all informed on as and when we have support for the same.
We understand your concerns with regards to sign-up process. At the outset, let
me assure that we are collecting very basic user’s information.
Information collected via Mera Mitra will not be transferred to any third
parties. There is NO other information that Mera Mitra stores, including access
to your contacts in mobile phonebook. The sign-up provides us the potential to
add several personalization, including the feature to “send this info via
email”. You will start seeing these rolling out in our subsequent releases.
Nevertheless, I have noted your concerns and we will examine if there is a way
to activate an optional sign-in process. Thanks for flagging this off for us.
As we mentioned in our original mail, Mera Mitra is in its infancy, we are are
excited of its possibilities and we want to make it better, for the community,
with the community. Please continue to send in your suggestions or comments to
us via this forum or write to us at i...@meramitra.in or call us at 9535767654
(Ankit) or 9986708007 (Pratik).

2019-05-14 Thread Ankit rajiv Jindal
Dear Harish.

Firstly, thank you. We appreciate you taking time from your busy schedule
to try Mera Mitra & to send in your inputs.
We are glad that you find the solution interesting and called it a step in
the right direction. Our team is working to get new features to make Mera
Mitra experience better & useful for the community.
Mera Mitra currently doesn’t have support for “send this info via email”.
However, our team is already working on incorporating this feature and we
shall keep you all informed on as and when we have support for the same.
We understand your concerns with regards to sign-up process. At the outset,
let me assure that we are collecting very basic user’s information.
Information collected via Mera Mitra will not be transferred to any third
parties. There is NO other information that Mera Mitra stores, including
access to your contacts in mobile phonebook. The sign-up provides us the
potential to add several personalization, including the feature to “send
this info via email”. You will start seeing these rolling out in our
subsequent releases.
Nevertheless, I have noted your concerns and we will examine if there is
a way to activate an optional sign-in process. Thanks for flagging this
off for us.
As we mentioned in our original mail, Mera Mitra is in its infancy, we are
are excited of its possibilities and we want to make it better, for the
community, with the community. Please continue to send in your suggestions
or comments to us via this forum or write to us at i...@meramitra.in or
call us at 9535767654 (Ankit) or 9986708007 (Pratik).

Thanks, and regards

Re: [AI] Accessible Phone

2019-05-14 Thread Satguru Rathi
Off course, the Nokia phones provide you the best Android experience out
there, but disadvantage of Nokia 6.1 Plus is that it has glass panels on
the both sides which are easily breakable with a simple accidental drop.
On the other hand, Nokia 5.1 Plus comes with mettle back and is much
cheaper. I think apart from accessibility, there are other things as
well which we as blind people should keep in mind when making a choice.
No one had suggested Moto phones which are equally good when it comes to
pure android experience. The Moto Power One could be another choice in
this range which comes with massive 5000 MA battery and is an Android
one phone.

Kanchan mam,
You must go with either Nokia or Samsung phones.
1+ is indeed an awesome phone, but it requires a few tweaks before you
can start using it effectively, so won’t recommend.
Nokia phones are pure android so fully accessible according to
Google’s standards.
Samsung on the other hand, shifts with pretty decent interface, and if
you choose a good Samsung phone, you also get Samsung’s own screen
reader,
So can be considered as an option.
I suggest you to make use of applications like auto tts, vocalizer and
eloquence tts so that you can get iPhone like comfort.
Xyomi and other phones are useable, but lacs quality performance.

Re: [AI] Louie - New screen reader

2019-05-14 Thread Ratul Arora
Hi Access Indians,
Just came across this video of this app called "Louie Voice Enable". It enables
the user to completely control apps (currently WhatsApp) through voice commands
only. It looks like it is in Beta testing Phase.

Louis Braille, the inventor of braille, is the inspiration behind naming this
app "Louie". Hoping that with your help, Louie Voice will also be able to
create a meaningful impact to our lives.

Dear saloni,

Thanks for your mail.

Yes, the chatbot can be accessed via Facebook Messenger. It does not
support voice and other smart capabilities as of now. however, One can
type in the composer as you do in any other messaging app and seek
information from Mera Mitra on Facebook Messenger.

You can look up for Mera Mitra in Facebook Messenger and you will find
it in the search result.

2019-05-14 Thread Amit Bhatt

Dear Avinash,

Like all other flights, Air asia would also provide you an escort at the
check in counter. They would assist you in boarding and after the flight is
landed as well. Crew staff members will also help you during your flight
journey.

You may inform them in advance to be on a safer side.

Thanks,

Re: [AI] Query regarding human assistance with AirAsia at the Bangalore Airport

2019-05-14 Thread Vedprakash Sharma
Most of the airlines provide escort facilities even if we have not informed
them beforehand.
I have used these services. However, I am not sure of Air India.
Another disgusting thing is that during exiting the plane, the human
assistance arrives very late. Most of the passengers pass by and we have to
wait for the escort to come. Hostesses keep on assuring that soon the help
is coming but it gets late.
