RE: [ActiveDir] Weird Domain Error

2002-01-24 Thread Thornley, Dave H

Hi,

We had a similar problem some time ago, I can't remember the cause (I'm sure it wasn't
licensing), but we fixed it by moving the master
browser role to another server.

The master browser role had been taken by an Exchange server, we moved it to a domain
controller and that fixed the problem. You can check
what computers are holding browser roles with BROWMON from the resource kit.

Title: RE: [ActiveDir] RIS and RipRep

When you installed RIS it should have asked you for a professional CD.  This may have gotten corrupted, or you may have inadvertently corrupted the sif file.

To test, try and add another CD based image using the RIS admin tool.

Did you slip-stream the service pack and hot fixes prior to the ris, or

Joshua
This is usually caused by the CD based image not being on the same service
pack as the workstation you are trying to run Riprep on.

You can install the service pack (i.e. SP2) directly in to the i386 source
folder by running the upgrade.exe with a /s:{Path to i386}command.

You
can create a new CD image with SP2 slipstreamed onto it and add all required
POST SP2 Hotfix's so that they are applied with the initial source at time of
build. Instead of explaining how in an email I recommend that you read the guide
'Microsoft Windows
2000 Service Pack Installation and Deployment Guide' which can be found at
'http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/TechNet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/support/spdeploy.asp'.
It has all the information you need regarding Integrating SP, and Hotfix's into
RIS (and any other) images.

Joshua
This is usually caused by the CD based image not being on the same service
pack as the workstation you are trying to run Riprep on.

You can install the service pack (i.e. SP2) directly in to the i386 source
folder by running the upgrade.exe with a /s:{Path to i386}command.

Hi,

We had a similar problem some time ago, I can't remember the cause (I'm
sure it wasn't licensing), but we fixed it by moving the master browser
role to another server.

The master browser role had been taken by an Exchange server, we moved
it to a domain controller and that fixed the problem. You can check what

Microsoft Windows 2000 , Datacenter Server
Microsoft Windows NT Workstation versions 3.51 , 4.0
Microsoft Windows NT Server versions 3.51 , 4.0
Microsoft Windows 95

---
SYMPTOMS
If you are using a computer that is running Windows NT or later, you may
receive the following error message:

No more connections can be made at this remote computer at this time because
there are already as many connections as the computer can accept.
If you are using a computer that is running Windows 95, you may receive the
following error message:
This request is not accepted by the network. Try again later.

CAUSE
You may be attempting to connect to a share that is configured to allows a
specific number of connections, and that number of connections has been
reached. Check the properties on the share on the server.

RESOLUTION
If the specified number of connections has been reached, increase the user
limit or set the value to "maximum allowed."

MORE INFORMATION
There are several other parameters that you can check when troubleshooting a
problem with limited connections to the computer.

Verify that the computer is running a retail version of Windows NT or later.

The server may be configured with Per Server licensing and the number of
licenses may be exhausted. A quick check to see if this is the problem would
be turn off the License Logging Service on the computer.

Check to see if the server was configured by upgrading a computer running
Windows NT Workstation to Windows NT Server. If it was, the following
registry parameter may need to be increased from a hex value of 0xa (10) to
0x:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters
\Users

RE: [ActiveDir] RIS and RipRep

2002-01-24 Thread Callow, David

Joshua

To be honest I never have streamlined hotfixes into a flat cd image on a
rips server. If the /s switch is available then I would suggest that you do
it.

If not when you image up a hot fixed build it should in theory put any
differences into the new images i386 directory. SP's are an exception to
this; I believe this decision was made in order to utilize the Single
Instance Store feature of RIS.

Sorry I can't be of further help

Dave

PS I have noticed that SP2 is now available as an .msi file, if the hotfixes
are also available in this format you could always roll them out via GPO
(intellimirror)

Solid backups are the only way to recover from a switch to Native mode,

Thanks for the info.  I'm very clear on the
concepts of Mixed vs. native as far as AD and Exchange.  No confusion
at all on those points and is the core of our migration strategy.  I

  Diane,

I've been watching this thread with some interest.
  :-)

Be sure that you're current direction, for all intents, should be
successful.  There is such a thing as Native and Mixed-Mode when
dealing with Exchange as well - but this has to do with Native and
Mixed-mode for the Exchange Organization.  Do _NOT_ get the Win2k
Native - Mixed-mode thing confused with the Exchange 2k Native -
Mixed-mode.  They are not the same.

  Synopsis:

  Windows 2000 Native vs. Mixed
  In Native mode:
  1.  No LMRepl communication with downlevel
  BDCs.
  2.  Universal groups are available, group nesting (i.e. Global
groups into global groups, etc) is available
  3.  Members servers and workstations continue to work as they
  did before.

In Exchange, the distinction between Native and Mixed is present
because Xech 5.5 does not have the ability to separate routing groups and
administrative groups.  So, while in mixed mode an Exch 5.5 site
functions as both.  Because E2K does not have this limit, and to get
the full flexibility out of the model, Native mode is used once there are
no Exch 5.5 servers and full routing and administrative groups can be
  leveraged.

  Exchange 2000 Native vs. Mixed
  In Native Mode:
  1.  No Exchange 5.x servers can be supported.  It's a E2K
  exclusive club.

Hope this helps clear up your confusion.  Your migration plan
(with the level of detail presented) looks fine.

  Good luck!

it to a domain controller and that fixed the problem. You can check what
computers are holding browser roles with BROWMON from the resource kit.

RE: [ActiveDir] RIS and RipRep

2002-01-24 Thread Morgan, Joshua
Title: Message

I
appreciate the Feedback...
I have
slipstreamed the Service pack into the image loaded it to the machine, updated
it with IE and  hot fixes as well as a old software
package.
After
doing this RipRep still works and I am loading the fool out of machines
now.

Thanks
so much for your help!

  You
can create a new CD image with SP2 slipstreamed onto it and add all required
POST SP2 Hotfix's so that they are applied with the initial source at time of
build. Instead of explaining how in an email I recommend that you read the
  guide 'Microsoft
Windows 2000 Service Pack Installation and Deployment Guide' which can be
  found at
  'http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/TechNet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/support/spdeploy.asp'.
It has all the information you need regarding Integrating SP, and Hotfix's
into RIS (and any other) images.

  Cheers

  David

Good point.  I have slipstreamed SP2 CD images on
all of my RIS servers, that point just slipped by.  If the CD based
image doesn't match the image you are using to upload (SP0 vs SP1 vs
SP2) they won't match and your install will fail!

Did you slip-stream the service pack and hot fixes prior
to the ris, or after you have pushed the image
to the system? I belive that if you apply SP2
AFTER the install through ris, the image will NOt match the
install.

I have loaded a machine via RIS and have applied
appropriate Service Packs and Hot fixes.
However, when I go to run RipRep (from the server that the
original image was loaded from) I get this
message:
The server to which you chose to replicate this
system does not contain a CD-based image. The
Version of the CD-Based image on the server must match the version of the system you are attempting to copy. Select a
different server or add a CD-based image to this
server    any
ideas?

[ActiveDir] Software Rollouts:

2002-01-24 Thread Blair, James

All,

Have any of you had
any issues with rolling out Windows 2000 SP2 using Group Policy on a workstation
that has Windows 2000 SP1 on it which was not installed using Group Policy...I
have found on numerous occasions that SP2 will not install on some of
these PC's, can't narrow it down to a specific thing, PC's different, same
SP1...due to the small amount, about 2% on the LAN I have had to install
SP2 manually...I have tried re-deploying, renaming (Group Policy
Object) and repackaging the SP2 to no avail. I don't want to have to
install SP2 manually to PC's across our entire domain WAN if the rollout
does not work...some of remote locations are connected via sat phones and PC
Anywhere is very slow in these instances...Any ideas would be
appreciated...
