that Aviat is running.

Re: [AFMUG] Aviat vs Cambium 820c

2020-03-29 Thread Ken Hohhof
Are you just pricing qty=1? If not, are you just figuring 20% off MSRP, or
have you asked your Cambium sales manager for better pricing? Also have you
included all accessories and license keys in your BOM? Not saying that will
change your price comparison, just some things to make sure it’s
apples-to-apples. Direct sales model is a little different than sales through
distribution.

The answer might be that licensed radio vendors go through product cycles and
whoever just brought out their next generation will look the best. Cambium
isn’t shipping the 850C yet. I seem to remember SIAE is in a similar situation
on 2+0 radios.

Re: [AFMUG] Next December

2020-03-29 Thread David Coudron
That virus stuff is beyond my pay grade, I was really just trying to find a way
to work that Austin Powers scene into a discussion somewhere and this was about
as close as I could get to a topic that would support it 😊

However, our whole world is shut down over a virus that wasn’t supposed to be
able to jump from animals to humans. But it did. I am not really pushing
the theory that hard, as again, it is way above my pay grade. But you have to
wonder about those kinds of things, as isolated things are meant to stay
isolated. Whether it is zebra mussels or other invasive species, or viruses,
inter-planetary travel could have the possibility of bringing something here
that doesn’t have a natural check in our nature checks and balances kind of
planet.

I've wondered about that. I recall an article by someone purporting to know
about such things. They suggested that we needn't be worried about alien
viruses because they would have evolved in a world with no humans and no
creatures anything like humans. Therefore they couldn't have evolved the means
to infect human cells and use them to multiply.

.but until we meet an alien virus we won't know what one looks like.

this country is headed for the population actually shrinking for probably the
first time ever. And I think that prediction was before the virus hit. I
think the 2008 recession caused lower rate of family formation, home ownership,

If I were at the age where you decide to “start a family”, I’m not sure I’d

Looking at the specs it appears Aviat is a better radio. 4096 quam vs 2048
quam. (1.4gbps vs 1.2gbps) SFP+ ports vs SFP ports. So why is Cambium

I don't think there has been a good predictor found of wealth or
success. (GPA, college degree, MBA, etc.)
But you can see people in your field that you would say, I'd hire them

school/college dropouts, low GPA, no sports ability, etc. If you had

In gym class I was never an early draft. Usually near the last.

I did play on local soccer and football leagues, but never stood
out. I did it because everyone else did it, and the parents said I
had to do something extracurricular. This is a bit of an
embarrassing story, but when I joined the local Pop Warner football
team I didn't know any of the rules to football. Soccer was simple
to muddle through --kick towards the other goal, don't use hands.
Football has a lot of rules. The coaches never explained how to

actually play and I never asked. I just sort of tried to emulate
the kids around me to get through the games. I never figured out
what a "down" was until I was in high school.

I haven't stayed in touch with any of the school athletes so I
couldn't say how they're doing in life.

I wonder what viruses will be brought back from Mars.Globalization brings
its own set up problems, travel to and from other planets could also bring some

I actually saw a prediction that with lower birthrate and blocking immigration,
this country is headed for the population actually shrinking for probably the
first time ever. And I think that prediction was before the virus hit. I
think the 2008 recession caused lower rate of family formation, home ownership,

If I were at the age where you decide to “start a family”, I’m not sure I’d

2020-03-29 Thread Darin Steffl
I think people who like attention and try to impress people, live the most
miserable lives. Those with the most true success typically avoid the
limelight and attention because they're too busy succeeding and changing
the world.

So the jocks or whoever you're referencing peak in highschool. After
graduating, they don't get too far as they don't rule the kingdom of
anymore once they reach the adult world.

Of course this is a stereotype not everyone fits but I'd say there's a 50%
chance it holds true.

I was picked in the last half for dodgeball mostly because I can't throw
the ball hard or accurately. I never got bullied and our school was small
enough everyone knew everyone. One thing I did notice is about 5 of the top
10 smartest people GPA wise aren't doing anything with their life yet at 28
years old. One is working at target as a stocker, another works as a hotel
desk clerk, another is a tutor and part time piano teacher. These were
people with 3.99 or 4.0 GPA's and they went to a 4 year college. I think
some people get into such a routine in K-12 that they don't know what to do
without structure after they graduate. And the cliques are gone too so they
don't have friends building up their confidence.

In my experience running at a fraction of the load to obtain longer runtime
does work well with at least the Smart-UPS units; UPSes / inverters will be
less efficient at the lower load, but at the same time batteries are more
efficient at a lower discharge rate.

The only new thing I’ve seen is I think there are some UPS models now using
Li-ion batteries, but still like Colin says, almost no UPS is designed for long
runtime without external battery packs. Even buying a higher power unit and
running it at a fraction of rated load doesn’t help much because they are
inefficient at low load.

I forget who was selling the Li-ion units.

Most consumer UPSes only come with enough battery to power their full load for
5-10min so to power a 250W-using desktop and monitor for 30min I think that
you'd need the amount of batteries (2x 12V 12AH) usually seen in 1000-1500VA

There's not much "better" with non-network UPSes as the service provided and
reliability has not changed noticeably in over 20 years.

Re: [AFMUG] Good Home UPS

Looking to power a desktop for ~30 minutes. I have both the old APC
Back-UPS and Tripp Lite SU750XL but was curious if
there were any new options available that might be better.

Yes, Depends on what your load is.  At home I'm using a SmartUPS3000
with 120AH batteries.  It runs everything in my home office, plus the
waterheater/furnace (heat only).  It's on a transfer switch to plug the
portable generator into it for an extended outage.  Luckily I'm on all
underground utilities, knock on wood, have had 1 power outage in the 15
years we've lived here.

tablets now which changes the UPS strategy.

Another factor is if it’s in a location where fan noise would be
bothersome.  I’ve had good luck with Tripp Lite SU750XL, it is dual
conversion, replaceable battery, and Powerpole connector for external
extended runtime battery.  But the fan runs all the time and it would
probably drive you crazy in a bedroom or home office.  And if your
electronics aren’t fussy about the quality of the input power, dual
conversion is probably an expensive overkill.

What are you going to run off it, and what run time do you need? It matters if
you are running electronics or a sump pump, and if you just want enough time to
save your work or if you want to keep working for a couple hours. Also most
people have battery operated laptops and tablets now which changes the UPS
strategy.

Another factor is if it’s in a location where fan noise would be bothersome.
I’ve had good luck with Tripp Lite SU750XL, it is dual conversion, replaceable
battery, and Powerpole connector for external extended runtime battery. But
the fan runs all the time and it would probably drive you crazy in a bedroom or
home office. And if your electronics aren’t fussy about the quality of the
input power, dual conversion is probably an expensive overkill.

We've seen many people use the APC Back-UPS series for a long time without
issues. Older models had replaceable batteries and will often work fine with a
new battery; they don't have a calibration command so it's good to put a light
load (30-50%) and let them run down to empty once or twice so that they
recalibrate themselves to the new battery.

Some new Back-UPS models don't have the replaceable batteries.
