[AFMUG] SAF: Daniel White Resignation Letter

2015-06-13 Thread Daniel White
The current thread onlist made me realize I had not notified the group about
a major change for me personally.

It is with mixed emotions that I am writing this email to inform you of my
decision to pursue a different direction in my career and will be departing
SAF Tehnika effective Tuesday, June 30th, 2015. I have truly enjoyed working
for SAF for the past 3 years, and hold the highest regards for the people I
have worked with and the integrity they employ in producing some of the
finest microwave radios and test equipment products in the world. But it is
time to spread my wings in a new environment with new challenges.

I'm not sure where my career will take me at this time, and I am exploring
many options that are mostly still in the wireless broadband space.

My cell phone and Skype ID will remain the same, and you can personally
reach out to me via e-mail at danieldeanwh...@gmail.com
 .

SAF is investing significantly more resources in North America this year and
I expect you will see a boost in their support for you and your business.
The entire SAF North America sales team can always be contacted via e-mail
at sale...@saftehnika.com or our technical
support team is available by e-mail at techsupp...@saftehnika.com
 .

I wish you and your company success and hope that we may cross paths again
in the future. I plan to still hang out here, although I may lurk in the
shadows for awhile.

Maybe today when someone has a good steady job for several years at the same
company it feels wrong?

OMG, I’m turning into my dad who worked for the same company for 45 years!

(Or worse, got laid off after 20 years at the same company and no one would
hire him?)

(Or worse yet, started a WISP.)

I am so blessed to have skills I can
market. My brother has a masters in business mgt. Company moved to
another state and two years later still can't find a decent job with pay
close to what he earned. They offer him entry level. He does have a
nice next egg though. He has GTE package collecting interest. But it is
harder for us older folks.
Hey...doesn't Telrad need sharp folks in Americas to give Leary some
quality time with family?

position the omt and if you pick the one bolt pattern with the label
closest to facing the sky your radios end up cockeyed 30 degrees off level

I am so blessed to have skills I can
market. My brother has a masters in business mgt. Company moved to another
state and two years later still can't find a decent job with pay close to what
he earned. They offer him entry level. He does have a nice next egg though.
He has GTE package collecting interest. But it is harder for us older folks.

Hey...doesn't Telrad need sharp folks in Americas to give Leary some quality
time with family?

Re: [AFMUG] SAF: Daniel White Resignation Letter

2015-06-13 Thread Ken Hohhof
At a certain point it has to be about repeatable quality because the
remaining labor cost is negligible. Certain tasks like welding and painting
have gone mainly to robots for that reason.

Interesting it is being reported that Microsoft's new giant Surface product
is being built in Oregon because it would cost so much to ship, plus they
say a little extra labor costs doesn't matter on a $20K product. Seems the
same case could be made for the shipping cost though. I suspect they don't
want to deal with a couple month feedback loop for any design changes or
manufacturing problems. When I was in the electronics manufacturing
business decades ago, common wisdom was you wanted the feedback loop as
short as possible. Just In Time manufacturing, Kanban supply chains with
suppliers restocking parts bins daily, testing inline with production so
problems can be found before you make more than a handful of units, and
engineers in the same building with production. Even with all these
advantages, Packetflux is dealing with a backwards port numbering issue, can
you imagine if they had a containerload of product "on the boat"? Of course
the other thing that has changed is global markets, few products are
designed and sold anymore for consumption in just one country, so that
marketing/engineering/production can all be sited in that country.

The thing I am wanting folks to notice is that this is a chain mount. Should
be good for 4 inch poles on up.
I am altering the geometry a bit to the chain and tightening bolt is more
tangent to the pole for more sizes of poles.

This mount also has a 2.375 diameter tube that is currently 8 inches long.
Made for mounting slightly larger stuff than the original M-TOW.

[AFMUG] Cisco pissing me off

2015-06-13 Thread Mike Hammett
This should be a trivial Cisco switch question. Apparently I don't use these
turds enough to remember everything.

show config says:

interface FastEthernet0/3
switchport access vlan 777
switchport mode access
speed 100
duplex full
no cdp enable
!

However, when trying to convert it to a tagged port with the following
commands, it doesn't change.

config terminal
int Fa0/3
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk allowed vlan 777

No errors, just no change. I even tried just setting the description. Same
result.

I also tried removing the vlan via:

interface FastEthernet 0/3
no switchport mode access
no switchport access vlan 777

Yeah, normally I type “show run” to see the current running config, and
something like “copy running startup” or “copy run start” to save the running
config so it doesn’t go away after reboot.

We've done several links using a PTP at one end and a normal connectorized
radio at the other end. I haven't ever seen an ePMP link do enough over 100 meg
for me to care about having a gigabit port.

You can run the PTP radios off passive power too, they're probably the least
picky about power of any radios I've used - you can even run them directly off
a UBNT power supply.

The containerized 5 GHz radios do the same throughput and work with passive

there's a killer bug that's causing the link to hang =(

Re: [AFMUG] IS binoculars

2015-06-13 Thread Ken Hohhof
So I decided to experiment first by ordering their oldest and least expensive
model, the 8x25 IS. Observations so far:

1) The image stabilization is awesome. Totally neutralizes hand shake but you
can still pan normally. Kind of surprising because this model came out quite a
few years ago.

2) They are smaller and lighter than I expected from the ads.

3) Adjusting them for your eyes is a little tricky but you only do this once.

4) My old Nikons were 8x42, but 8x25 seems plenty bright unless you are bird
watching at dusk or something.

5) Soft rubber eyecups are nice, I assume they will eventually need replacing,
luckily Canon seems to have good support for repair parts, I should probably
order a set now.

Given how well the IS works, I would now feel comfortable ordering one of their
higher magnification models like maybe the 12x36, whereas 8x or 10x is normally
the limit for handheld. I held off partly because Canon is coming out with 2nd
and even 3rd generation versions of the higher magnification models. I’m not
exactly sure how they are different. I do know compared to the 8x25, some of
the others don’t require you to hold the IS button down constantly and also
have threads on the front so you can use lens caps or clear filters for
protection. These come with rear caps but nothing for the front. Admittedly,
the lens covers for my now missing Nikon Monarchs were a joke.

They list up to 15x50 and 18x50, but I don’t have that kind of money. The knee
of the price/performance curve seems to be 12x36. I would not try to handhold
12x binoculars without the IS feature. Maybe I just have shaky hands.

Correct telrad -108 would be a -78 for canopy/epmp/ubnt

I was amazed because we couldn't see the tower, it's skimming a hill and
going thru a bush while sitting in the truck at ground level. We tried 450
from the roof and couldn't get a signal.

Crazy performance. Let us know what it does with the final install.

Sweet truck too. Lots of truck talk lately. Thinking I need some new

RSRP, it is a measurement. It is a truer number than RSSI, which is only an
estimate (so I'm told). As Ken said, basically add 30 to get an idea of the

show config says:

Re: [AFMUG] IS binoculars

2015-06-13 Thread Chuck McCown
If you could zoom to 18 it would be nice, but a fixed 18 seems to have limited
use.

From: Ken Hohhof
Sent: Saturday, June 13, 2015 2:40 PM
To: af@afmug.com
Subject: Re: [AFMUG] IS binoculars

One thing I experienced with 3.65 GHz WiMAX was an install that turned out to
work only because of signal bouncing off the tall tree leaves, and stopped
working in November when the leaves went away. We should have been suspicious
when aligning for best signal actually had the CPE pointed up at about a 30
degree angle.

I have seen something similar with 900 MHz.

No, Cisco has specifically done FCC filings attacking WISPs when unnecessary.
There is better gear to use from other vendors who don't shit on us.

I would like Extreme, but I wasn't able to get the new pricing I was hoping to
get. Juniper and Extreme are both at about $10k for a 48x10GigE 4x40GigE
switch. I haven't received pricing from anyone else on comparable switches.
Extreme has the benefit of a fairly mature MPLS implementation.

I'm saw a good deal on some 24 port Brocades, but my partners weren't ready for
the move yet.

There are certainly reasons to hate Cisco, but their hardware is generally very
reliable, and used Cisco becomes much more affordable at 2 points in its life
cycle – when they get swapped out for the next generation, and when EOS/EOL
gets announced. Also the used equipment has often spent its entire life in a
datacenter on an equipment lease. I am about to install my first 7301 as a BGP
router, I think these may lead a tougher life since some were probably
installed at customer prem by carriers for metro Ethernet service.

One place I won’t go is their security (ASA) product line. Seems well built
with good performance numbers, but apparently it’s a bitch to configure them,
or else my customers hire incompetent Cisco experts. Every time they mess with
the VPN config it breaks something, they blame the ISP, and it’s never the
ISP’s fault.

Your point on sector efficiency is the reason we no longer like NLOS installs.
Yes you may gain few customer with little less effort but in long run it hurts.
We try to install 40 to 50 feet push-up poles and get better line of sight.

 Patrick, I haven't been following Telrad but that's too incredible - I
can't see how -108, which is below the noise floor for any reasonable
channel bandwidth (20mhz+?) could get any reasonable speed, much less
 those.
