Network Time Protocol is based on a 32 x 32 bit number. 32 bits of digits and
32 bits of decimals. It rolls over once ever 136 years. It will roll over in
2036.

We had a bunch of calix shelves reporting Feb 7, 2036. Calix kept saying
things like we were getting bogus NTP etc. Turns out that their clocks are
getting set to 0xh by something. I doubt NTP is reporting that date.

Yep, this could be like Y2K. Once the clock rolls, I don’t think NTP yet has a
field showing epoch number so how do you differentiate between 1900 and 2036?

Ok - maybe not the blocks all of the time :-)

Auger is a one man post hole digger with a 8” diameter bit - something like
this:

No idea if that is a good one or not - I can’t find the ones we bought anymore.
It’s a 4 cycle so you don’t have to worry about guys mixing oil (or not mixing
oil). Of course our biggest screwup installer (long gone) who I would have
thought most likely to forget to put oil in a 2-cycle was the one who decided
to put 2-cycle oil in the 4-cycle engine and then complained it didn’t start
well and smoked a lot.

Lease is a straight expense on the books and you get new equipment every few
years - but there are significant upfit costs that you lose each time you
exchange the van. Sure they can be built into the lease - but your still
paying for it.

If you buy you would normally depreciate but IRS Section 179 lets you expense
the entire thing if you want to. Sometimes that just means you are kicking
the tax can down the road.

I usually finance them over 48 months and figure approximately 40k with upfit.
The last couple have been closer to 45k all in. The oldest ones (the
Sprinters) are about 7 years old now and were expensed and paid for long ago.
Anything we get out of them now is just a bonus. I prefer newer equipment for
the trucks as it’s a significant expense and hassle when one breaks down and we
have to reschedule work and/or have someone sitting around without a vehicle.
The PR value of having decent looking equipment with good graphics and the
ability to carry all of the assorted equipment to do the job in one truck roll
is worth the extra expense.

Re: [AFMUG] Suggestions for work vans

2016-10-18 Thread Ben Royer
Yes, there is something to be said about a stocked van. Our main installer
fleet consists of 7 Chevy Express Vans, mostly 1500, 2 are 2500, and all fairly
similar in shelving. We have a spare AstroVan, and a couple Tahoe’s and a 3500
Diesel for hauling. The biggest discrepancy is the techs, some guys keep them
squeaky clean, others not so much. It seems no matter how hard you try to
mandate it clean, stocked, etc. Give it a couple days and you’re a broken
record again, asking them to clean it. I’m looking at the future of our fleet
now also, and I really like the ProMaster, and I’ve driven a Ford Transit 350
with the 6’ back, which was really nice. Ladders and pipes being our biggest
thing to accommodate for. If we do decide to go new, I think one of the key
factors is gas mileage we might gain by going with a newer, more efficient
vehicle.

If you believe in the free market, the “value” of new and used vans should be
about equal.

I would think if you have a “fleet” of more than 1-2 vehicles, there would be
value in having them all similar, right down to the shelving and what tools and
parts they are stocked with, right down to where they are in the van. So you
could send a tech out in any vehicle and they wouldn’t waste a bunch of time
looking for stuff. That also assumes some discipline that your techs keep the
vans clean, organized, and stocked, or that you have a second shift to do that.
That’s something that impressed me when WISPER did that open house a couple
years ago, other than one NV200, they were all Transit Connects and it didn’t
matter which one you took out, they were all identically equipped and stocked.
I wouldn’t want such a small van though, nor would I want to drive around our
back roads in winter in a Transit Connect, but somehow WISPER makes it work.

Or if you’re like me, too small to have a “fleet”, then you’re really screwed
if your vehicle has to go into the shop. So there is something reassuring
about having a new vehicle with full warranty, just send it to the dealer for
scheduled maintenance, and unless someone abuses it there shouldn’t be any
major problems for quite a few years. At that point, it can now become your
“used” vehicle, or you can sell it off to someone who prefers to buy vehicles
used and partly depreciated, and buy another new one, equipped and upfitted to
your specifications.

I have noticed when looking at used vehicles already equipped with ladder racks
and shelves, that people beat the crap out of them. They look OK in the online
photos, but when you check them out in person, they never look so good. I
suppose it comes down to putting the time into checking out enough of them.
Maybe the middle ground would be to identify a big company that equips their
vans the way you like, find out who they send their used or surplus vans to,
and buy those. At least they would all be the same.

Here is the solution that we just rolled:

https://www.get-console.com/shop/en/device-servers/98-airconsole-ts-8-port.html

We then bought a used Cradlepoint+Verizon modem off of eBay for < $200.
It's the cheapest solution that you will find. Get-Console has a 'cloud
server' that we host in EC2 that tunnels the consoles to the server. You
don't have to have a public routable IP on Verizon for this (which costs
$500) to work properly. Other than some minor support issues (the company
is located in NZ), everything is working pretty smoothly.

The oldest ones (the
Sprinters) are about 7 years old

Anything we get out of them now is just a bonus. I prefer newer equipment for
the trucks as it’s a significant expense and hassle when one breaks down and we
have to reschedule work and/or have someone sitting around without a vehicle.
The PR value of having decent looking equipment with good graphics and the
ability to carry all of the assorted equipment to do the job in one truck roll
is worth the extra expense.

Re: [AFMUG] Suggestions for work vans

2016-10-18 Thread Mark Radabaugh
There is no way in hell I would ever want to work out of those vans, and there
is no way to get all the equipment we carry in one.

32’ ladder, 28’ ladder, cable, Canopy gear in FSK 5.7 and 2.4, 430 5.7, 450 in
900, 2.4, 3.65 integrated and connectorized, 5.7 integrated and connectorizied.
Ubiquiti in various flavors. Antenna’s and power supplies for all of the
above. Non-Pen mounts, regular mounts, roof mounts, power supplies for all of
the above. Concrete and poles. Concrete blocks for non-pen mount. Power
auger, post hole digger, indoor and outdoor wire and cable, tools, indoor
supplies (wall plates, punchdowns, etc). We would have to tow a trailer to
carry all of that with that van - or spend hours a day digging through the
gigantic mess in the back of the van.

One trip and done.

RF paths though are almost always symmetric.

Most common cause would be xmt power set wrong or bad electronics. Also 20 dB
low is often symptomatic of a bad power amp on the xmt side or a bad RF switch
on a TDD radio.

Only after all the horses have been investigated and eliminated would I start

I think Ken is confusing the Integrated model with the letter A at the end of
the PN vs. the new one ending in the letter B. You want the on in the attached
Spec Sheet.

The new Integrated 450i has better antenna specs than the old integrated model
and the Cambium 5GHz sector. The feedback I’ve heard has been mostly positive,
although the integrated model prevents you from turning up the TX power by
playing with the antenna gain settings. So if your overdriving your gear – it
might not be a good investment.

Why would you do that? I thought the integrated was more of a convenience
thing, but at the expensive of sidelobe and F/B performance.

You could swap out the 450 AP for a 450i AP with the same antenna if you are
wanting to run in U-NII-1 or use 40 MHz channels.

Or there is an MTI 90 degree sector that supposedly has better sidelobe and F/B
performance if that’s what you are looking for.

Has anyone replaced a 450 AP and 90 degree antenna (model 85009324001) with a
450i Integrated?

I would like to know if coverage was same / better, and the level of
performance improvement?

Thanks

$89 for a 10.5 inch with keyboard. Maybe not decent but it works pretty
well. Heavier than the usual though.
