Stus-List Winch Sealant suggestions

2024-04-10 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
I mentioned a while back I was planning on replacing my old Barient primary
winches…. well I’ve got a pair of new Harken 46 ST’s ready to go. I’ve removed
the old winches, sealed the old holes, have starboard backing plates (probably
overkill) and I'm ready to go.

Wondering what you folks suggest for sealing under new winches, between winch
base and fibreglass of cockpit? Old winches didn’t seem to have anything other
than a bit of Butyl Tape around and in the bolt holes.

Should I just do the same (appears to be solid fibreglass with no wood core at
all under the winches). I’ve thought of putting some 5200 under bases, but I
never like using that under something I may need to remove someday! Should I
use 4200? Or something else?

What says the C brain trust?

Stus-List Hints on swapping winches?

2024-03-22 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
I'm about to finally replace my old 2 speed Barient 25 primary winches on my
C 34, with Harken 46 Self tailing winches.
Anyone have experience doing a similar swap? I fully expect I’ll need to fill
old holes and drill new ones. And probably glass in aluminum or plywood backing
plates.

Any other hints and tips?

Stus-List Re: Mac Navigation options?

2023-10-22 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
Rick,

Technically Navionics will “work" on a Mac laptop but only through a web
browser which means it has to be connected to internet all the time. And they
don’t allow downloading of the charts offline to the Laptop (only a mobile
device). So looks like my only real option is to spring for a tablet and
download the maps to it.

Thanks guys, I checked out both Active Captain and Aquamaps and they only run

Have found both OpenCPN and MacENC64 but nautical maps of NovaScotia Canada are
either unavailable or crazy expensive.

Perhaps I have to break down and buy an iPad and use either Navionics,
ActiveCaptian or AquaMaps.

Stus-List Mac Navigation options?

2023-10-19 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
I have an on-deck ChartPlotter at the helm and while I’m a fan of Navionics on
an iPhone… it’s so small!

I don’t have an iPad or tablet but I do have a great Mac laptop I don’t use —
it would make a great on-board navigation station. What software and charts are
good? Navionics on a laptop runs through the web so that’s not a viable option.
I saw OpenCPN but I can’t seem to find any raster or vector charts for Eastern
Canada.

Anybody running anything good?

2022-01-03 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
While I’m a new owner, I’ve now witnessed two launches and two haul-outs… each
involving a 500 yard run up a bumpy hill hanging/swaying in a sling (not for
the faint of heart) and my keel doesn’t move relative to the boat (1980 C 34)
at all.

It did have the familiar C smile when I bought it, but with the kind
direction of this group, a cautionary torquing of the keel bolts, and some
G-Flex applied pre-launch last season—that appears to be remedied for now.

Not to be alarmist, but I’d be concerned about any movement of keel relative to
the boat and would want to have it checked out by a marine surveyor while it’s
out of the water.

2021-10-25 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
First full season for me with my C 34 and I used Interlux Micron CSC, as
that’s what the previous owner ’thought’ was on it when I bought it. A good
friend has also used it on his Tartan 3700 for years with good results.

I used 2 to 3 coats after a light sanding of the previous coat(s) and it has
worked very well. Five months moored in the Northwest Arm in Halifax NS and it
was surprisingly super clean when it came out at end of season… a little green
scum in places but that’s it! Stainless prop shaft was caked with barnacles and
growth, so I’m guessing bottom paint worked great where it was applied!

Does anyone coat their stainless prop shaft (or brass folding prop) with
bottom paint?

You pick what function you want and wire it that way. My guess is you wired it

Stus-List Re: Mast in and out

2021-10-01 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
Where I store my C 34 boat for the winter in Chester, Nova Scotia, they
charge me $150 for going mast in or out. They also do a fine job of attaching
all the rig, stays, shrouds and fuller as well as roughly tune it when putting
it in… not bad for $150 I figure!

You do have to store with them for the winter to get that price, but their
storage fees are equally competitive. The savings more than make up for the 7
or 8 hour sail from Halifax… and its becoming a nice start and end of season
tradition with my, now grown, kids.

2021-08-30 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
Not a spider deterrent, but a mouse deterrent…

A friend (who has a crazy number of outboard motors) and has had huge issues
with mice eating the wiring when in storage, swears by putting a piece of Irish
Spring soap in each cowling…. says’s he’s never had an issue since. I’ll try
that myself this fall!

Stus-List Bilge pump outflow

2021-06-03 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
On my C 34, I have a non-automatic bilge pump in the well next to the mast
holder. It’s old and back flows about gallon (maybe an exaggeration!) of water
back into the bilge once it shuts off. I’m replacing it and expect I can just
attach the new bilge pump to the existing outflow piping. My question is, if I
wanted to install a second one (automatic one), slightly higher in same area,
Do I need an entirely new outflow and thru-hull or can I join it with a ‘Y’
connector to the same pipe as the first bilge pump… so they would each use same
pipe/thru-hull?

Stus-List Re: Removing lettering

2021-04-21 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
Adhesive lettering is WAY easier than old painted lettering!

A heat gun and a sharp scraper are your friends. The heat gun will loosen the
adhesive on the vinyl and then you can get a scraper or razor edged scraper in
underneath to peel it off.

Stus-List Re: Leaving interior Teak natural?

Matt,

My PO (or maybe the PPO) was similarly sloppy when applying Cetol throughout
exterior and interior of boat. I tried a few things and the ABSOLUTE Best is
gently scraping with the dull bottle opener end of my Swiss Army knife. So, I
bet a big rounded-over flat-head screwdriver would wor kwell too. It beats any
solvent I’ve tried. I just gently scape (or push) of Cetol off the gelcoat—
works beautifully. Thanks to all of the subscribers that contributed to the list to help with the

Stus-List Leaving interior Teak natural?

2021-03-27 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
Spring chores on the new-to-me C 34… every piece of the beautiful teak
interior is coated in Cetol. It makes it look so DARK! I’m successfully
removing the Cetol with a heat gun and scraper. After a light sand, I’m
wondering if I varnish it or leave it uncoated (natural). I’m not a fan of
oiling as it seems to attract dirt and grime. Obviously I’ll be treating any
exterior woodwork… but what about the interior, varnish or natural? Or
something else?

Stus-List Yanmar cutting out at sea?

2020-09-05 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
Just brought my new-to-me C home. My 2009 Yanmar 3YM30 purred like a kitten
in most seas. But this was a 30 hour slog through hell. Decided to motor-sail a
bit in some heavy seas (20-25 kts), engine, at 2500-2800 rpm, would suddenly
lose revs then often quit. Could start up again in a few moments, but would do
it again in 5 minutes or so. Gave up on it until winds died down and started it
up no problem... worked flawlessly for a 2 hour motor in calm waters after
that. Boat was fully serviced in fall and on hard until 2 weeks ago when I
bought and launched it. Has a Racor filter/water separator and inline fuel
filter. I'm wondering if the exhaust being under water during that point of
sail would cause the issue or maybe I should just change up filters, or was it
probably sediment in tank being kicked up and starving the engine? Thoughts?

Stus-List Insurance Provider?

2020-08-11 Thread Dean McNeill via CnC-List
I‘m in process of purchasing a 1980 C 34 but I’m being held up by insurance
provider.

My broker (specializing in marine insurance) has sent the clean survey and all
details to the insurance provider. Was supposed to be 2 days for approval… it’s
now stretching into 4 days and we can’t get a response from provider. I can’t
do a deal unless I know I can get vessel insured. Any insurers/brokers that you
think are great and responsive so I can get this deal done?

A little leery of trying the online quote-and-go options but maybe I should?
Any good redo’s?

I’m in Halifax, Nova Scotia if that matters.
