The tone of the discussion here has changed a little from 'this isn't something
that is needed' to 'this is very difficult'. Thanks for that.

Here are some observations:
- OOO later can generally be interpreted as 'never'
- on the other hand, as the previous change from 8 to 16 bits shows, this is
something that will be needed eventually for a professional product
- it seems intuitive that in high quality code, size should be set by a
parameter, as even 32 bits is unlikely to be the final buffer size

To what extent would it be practical to start preparing for the change, so that
it was much less significant when eventually attempted? For example, would it be
practical to slowly convert the code so that the current 16 bit implementation
is based on a parameter? If it was, the amended class and methods could be
introduced slowly by all developers as they enhance code for other reasons. It
would also allow anyone who was particularly interested in making this change to
start preparation for it within the standard code and it may well be that some
automation of the changes might be possible. It would also allow experimental 32
bit buffer builds and testing. After some time, regrettably probably several
years, the remaining conversion would be much less of a problem, though as mba
clearly explained, it would not be insignificant. If nothing is done, the
problem can only become harder and harder.

Those are very imaginative approaches, but do they resolve the problem?

The difficulty is that the suggestions, particularly the first, add unnecessary
complexity and it's not obvious that the extra coding required would be less
than doing the job properly. Writer is perfectly capable of handling a document
with more than 65534 characters. Why can't a paragraph be paged in and out in an
analogous way to a document? That might improve rather than detract from
performance.

The bottom line is that there are users who need very large paragraphs, whether
because of the nature of the document or as an interim step in editing large
documents. A 100 page book isn't very long in this context.

Hard limits were common in early application software. Later, it was generally
accepted that limits should be imposed only by what the hardware can handle. I
understand that this may be a very difficult issue to fix within Writer, but it
seems inevitable that the limit must be removed one day. A professional product
would have this capability.

There was a problem with 3.1. I have struggled with it for some months. It is
most easily seen if you try to uninstall 3.1 from Control Panel  Add or Remove
Programs  OpenOffice.org 3.1  Remove
The removal process starts, but eventually reports that OpenOffice 3.1 is
running and, as no instance is running, removal stops.

After quite a lot of experimentation, the following resolved the problem. I am
not sure if all the steps are necessary, but this is what I did:
1) Make sure the files for OpenOffice 3.1 are still on the desktop. Mine were in
the Recycle bin and needed to be restored. If the files aren't on the desktop or
the Recycle bin, you may need to create them on a different PC and copy them 
across.
2) In the Control Panel dialogue shown above, instead of clicking Remove, click
Change and then on the Program Maintenance screen check Repair and click Next.
Repair progressed most of the way, but didn't seem to complete normally.
3) Then, from the Program Maintenance screen, click Remove and follow the
prompts. The application is successfully removed.
4) A new version of OpenOffice can then be installed.

As I believe this is probably a problem specific to 3.1, I am marking this as
'Wontfix'. Please reopen if it happens with a later version, or if the procedure
above does not resolve the problem.

Not having an inbuilt 'automatic' spreadsheet range extended when more data is
added is very non-intuitive. This is something that naive users would find very
difficult to understand and debug. I found the reason for only by accident.
Suggest that the target is changed to 3.2 or if that isn't possible, then 3.2.1

I believe it is a regression, because of the multiple notes that get generated.
It's certainly arguably a 'regression' visually and it will confuse people.

I understand the problem of the stalled html import/export, but arguably this is
another of those silly little bugs that makes OOo look a mess, gives it a bad
reputation and makes it easy for those who wish to criticise it. If it can't be
fixed properly in the 3.x series, can we not completely disable the notes code
in html import/export, which would be better than the current mess? If not, I
don't feel that OOo Later (which effectively means never) is acceptable.

Sorry to preach, but I'm seriously concerned about the impact of new
functionality on users when bugs are introduced or exposed as a result. I'd
really like to influence the culture and perception of the development teams to
take responsibility for 'collateral damage' as well as for their own stuff. It's
really not working right just now.

Have tried very hard to create this problem with a 100Mb Iomega Zip drive.

I have not managed to confirm the issue with Writer with 3.0 and m35 on Win XP
or with 2.4.2 on Vista. In every case the original file is not corrupted when
the I/O disk full error appears.

There were several odd effects though, for example a corrupted file was written
at one point that turned out to be the first 22 pages of a document. Also, the
lock file is deleted when you start to save a file, so protection is lost. I
think someone else could then open the file read/write, not tested.

Will also try with Calc.

In saving an edited file to a full disk, if the disk is full (I/O error, not
enough space) the lock file is deleted even though the document is still open.
Another user could potentially open the file read/write.

Also, in some circumstances it is possible to write a corrupt partial file to
the disk. The file could be recovered and (in this case) had the first 22 pages
of the document.

The two examples in your revised attachment spreadsheet are equally easy to
explain. 

The average example is exactly as before. Type a number anywhere in the B2:B77
range, edit the formula in any way and return to current, press return and the
formula computes.

The problem with the sum is that the cell is formatted as text. Change the
format to 'all', edit and change back the formula, press return and the formula
computes.

Apologies, I agree that 'wontfix' was incorrect. But I think 'invalid' is a fair
assessment. Please check out the above and see if we can agree to that.

OK, I think you are changing the issue slightly. Perhaps we are iterating
towards a better description. I don't think the problem (and I can see more of a
problem now) is to do with formulas, it's to do with the format of the cells in
column A, which seem to be inconsistent. The problem can be resolved in various
ways, but with some difficulty (eg changing the format of column A globally to
'all' doesn't work). I'm guessing that something in the XML file must be wrong,
but although I can see the XML via Winzip, working out what is wrong is beyond
my technical knowledge. However, I agree it would be better if Calc did not end
up in this muddle, however badly the original file was written. Suggest we
change the description to 'Calc fails to recognise and resolve inconsistent cell
formats'. With that description, I'd be happy to mark the issue as 'new'.

The problem with the html you cite is not that margin-bottom isn't working - it
is. However, as margin-top is not defined, default spacing is used. Add
margin-top:0; to the Western style in your html to confirm that. Thus, the
problem might be that margin-top is not being generated for the paragraphs
concerned. However, in your .odt attachment it is the default paragraph which
has margins set to 0, whereas I think the original may have been using multiple
styles to generate the html example you included at the beginning.

No I'm doing Save As  Html... the same as you, starting from your .odt 
document.

I've just tried with 2.4 (Pavel's m8) on a different PC and I get (and thus can
confirm) the issue you originally raised.

My alternate html comes from '3.0.1' m34 on Windows. Perhaps this is a new
change in functionality which has made it into the Windows m34 build but not
into the Linux one. You could try the Italian Win m34 from the link you used for
the Linux version to see if you can get the same result. If you do, then it
might be worth waiting a version or two to see if the Linux code catches up. I
don't understand enough about the process to check what's included in what.

problems including impossibly slow performance and could even lead to directory
corruption. Was this your main disk or a secondary one? 

A system cannot run properly with all its disks full. You get plenty of warning
messages from Windows well before a main disk gets full. If you have more than
one hard disk, the easy 'workaround' would have been to save the document on
another disk before making some space on the full one or possibly saving on
removable media.

Although the issue is potentially serious, full disks don't happen very often,
so few users will be affected, so this issue may not get immediate attention or
confirmation.

Comments were intended to support the issue. Presume your main concern is about
the change to P3. The change was based on no data loss, only formatting loss and
there is an 'easy' workaround (don't click on the background tab). You can even
get the default back (create a new style with all the other attributes and
reassign content to the new style) which is messy, time-consuming and ought to
be unnecessary, but is possible. Thus, P3 seemed about right. Also, AFAIK, this
is the only report of the problem - I did do a search - so it's not troubling
many people (or they haven't noticed perhaps).

I can confirm that styles change as you describe (using m34). I cannot confirm
that it is a regression.

Open say Heading 2 style. Click on Organizer tab. Click on the Background tab.
Click back on Organizer tab. 'white, transparent' is added to the style summary.

The background of paragraphs to which Heading 2 has been applied do not change,
however, inheritance is affected, because if you now change the background of
the Linked with style (Heading) to say Blue, the background of other styles (eg
Heading 1) linked to it are changed, but not the background of Heading 2 
paragraphs.

As one of the important benefits of OpenOffice is good style handling, this is a
serious defect, but it does not seem to meet the criteria for P2. Setting P3.

Suggest target to 3.1 or 3.2.

Does this problem affect only OpenOffice of does it affect all applications?

I can't test this on Linux, but on Windows although most appearance choices have
a white document background, there are some that deliberately do not. If you
choose one that has a non-white background, that's what you get. And you can
selectively change that aspect anyway. Can you not do that on Linux?

This does not seem to meet the criteria for P2. Setting P3. If all applications
are working the same way, then it's not a defect at all, it's just a feature of
the themes process on Linux.

Sorry, forgot to refer to the #REF.

For the small 4 cell example, the sorted formula ending up in B2 refers to the
row one above (as it did before sorting). If you move the four cells to the top
right-hand corner and do the sort again, the formula ends up in B1 and the cell
'one above' is outside the grid, therefore #REF is correctly generated. This
will happen to any formula when sorting moves a cell so that the relative
position of the cells referred to in the formula are beyond the range of the 
sheet.

For the following four cells:
A2: 2  B2: a
A3: 1  B3: =B2

Sort these four cells on column A, and the formula in B3, now in B2, no longer
points to the 'a' character, now in B3, instead it points to B1. Behaviour is
the same in Calc and in Excel.

In this case perhaps it's 'obvious' what you want, but maybe you can think of
other scenarios where something different may be 'obvious'. For this situation,
the 'solution' is to select and copy the cells in column C (for the first
attachment spreadsheet), Click Paste Special, clear Paste all and Formulas and
check Numbers and click OK. (This does the same as Paste Special  Values in
Excel, though it's not as intuitive.) You can then sort correctly. I realise
that's not what you wanted to do, but AFAIK there isn't a way to do that.

This is not a bug. Sort simply doesn't support what you want to do. If you wish
to change this issue into a request for an enhancement, that's fine, but it will
almost certainly need a lot of analysis to demonstrate that the change does what
you want and what others might want, unambiguously, intuitively, without
introducing unwanted side effects.

Tested with 3.0

Suspect the reason the formula was left as lower case by Excel is that it's
uncomputable (average counts the number of numbers, and there are 0 numbers in
your range). If you change the range to include any number (eg a1:b77 the
formula works immediately. If you type a number in the existing range and then
in the formula in A78 type any character, remove it and then press Return the
formula also works.

If you type in the same formula to any other cell, you get the Divide by zero
warning, which is correct (no numbers in the range).

Therefore the defect is not recognising as a formula a string which Excel
refused to convert into a formula.  I doubt this is P2 and it might be
considered more an enhancement than a bug. 

Tested with Excel 2002. Average over a blank set of cells is correctly
recognised and gives the Divide by zero warning. Thus the problem probably
arises because of the application which originally wrote the XLS file, which may
not have been Excel - it's a bug there not really in Calc.

Changing to P3 and setting wontfix because it's a rather unlikely situation.

fails).

I'm setting a target of 3.0.1 as it's probably not important enough to delay

space, drag and drop is OK.
Click undo and the selection will include a leading space.
Drag and drop again, and unless you are careful, white space does not adjust as
it did the first time.

Similarly, select any text including a starting or trailing space, white space
does not adjust intuitively. I can understand why it has been implemented this
way, but it's not the behaviour most users probably want. Maybe we need an
option setting, someone probably depends on it as it is!

Intuitive drag and drop is almost the first thing you might want to get right
for a word processor. Will suggest in ux-discuss that this is targeted for 3.1.

In the dialogue box when you save a new document, is the box 'Automatic file
name extension' checked? If it is not, Writer will (correctly) save the file
without the file extension, which will lead to the situation you describe. The

OK, have looked at i80089. The advantages are arguable both ways and I would
guess the majority might prefer 'without'. As with the released build, some will
prefer with and some without. How much effort would it be to post both? Those
who strongly prefer 'without' can use Pavel's builds but thus we won't be
testing the official snapshots.

The snapshot page says that the snapshots are without Java and even gives the
without Java file size. That's pretty confusing. I'm reopening because the text
on the snapshots page clearly needs to be corrected if the build is to remain
'with'.

This issue has been reassigned to me, but I can't do anything with it. To whom
can it be reassigned.

The snapshot build includes Java (it's 139Mb, not the 120Mb stated on the
snapshot page). Same thing happened with m7. I got into a mess with Java
versions as a result of m7 snapshot. It would be nice to have the advertised
non-Java build. Pavel has not built Windows versions of m9.

Ah! Many apologies - must have been having a bad day. My base... tag is 
nonsense.

The problem is that a base tag needs a full URL, it's not legal to do what we
were trying to do.

If you replace the base tag with (eg) base
href=http://www.onepoyle.net/images/; then everything works.

Things are slightly confused by what Writer does. If you make any change to a
document, it adds the base URL to all img tags and removes the base tag. It was
doing that to all our examples as well, but as there wasn't a valid URL in any
of the base tags we supplied, there was nothing to add, and as the images were
in the same directory, that fixed the problem.

Apologies for misleading you.

and do work is a different issue. They are just being kind to you. If you want
Writer to work the same way, that would need the creation of an enhancement
issue. Although on the face of it not an unreasonable request, there might well

understood it correctly and the relative tag is not legal.)

There does seem to be a problem with this document. If you make any change,
save, close and reload, the problem goes away. However, the problem is not
simply that of removing the base tag (though this is the effect of the edit and
save). Other html documents with the same base tag load fine. I will add an
example, using the same graphic.

this problem so the cause can be more easily determined.

replace terms? In certain circumstances you may find that the box at the top

I used the accented variety, Win XP. Was replacing dejavu rather than deja, but
have now tried both. As yours therefore, except that I haven't deleted all the
other entries. Cannot recreate in either of the OOo versions mentioned. Entry is
still there if I close Writer and restart.
Are you entering ToolsAutocorrect with the same language (see top of dialogue
box)?  (If you create the entry in English (UK) but come in from a document
formatted as language English (USA), the entry will appear to have disappeared.
Select the language you created the entry in, and see whether or not it is 
there.)
