[AMRadio] The Higher Bands are already Hot this Morning
Both 10 and 6 meters are full of signals here in Mississippi this morning. On 10, the K0KP 500 MW beacon on 28.212.8 is 599, and a 3 watt beacon from Illinois on 28.214 is even stronger. The 6 meter beacon band is full of signals from the mid west and east coast. So, crank up something, and get on the air. I plan to be on 15 meter AM on 21.425, or 10 meter AM on 29.000 or above if the band gets busy. [AMRadio] New Product Announcement: 'Retro-75'
Thought some of the people here would be interested in this one. - Original Message - From: To: "QRP-L" Sent: Sunday, March 14, 2010 6:00 PM Subject: [QRP-L] New Product Announcement: 'Retro-75' gang- Sorry to keep folks waiting- I returned home this afternoon from a great weekend at the MassCon QRP Convention. This one's a bit 'off the beaten path'. The product is a 75-meter AM transceiver board kit,. It measures 3.5" x 5.27" and runs 2.5W carrier/8W peak. It's supplied with a 3885 kHz transmit crystal, although a number of other crystal frequencies are available from both US and European suppliers. Its receiver is tunable over a range of 45-50 kHz, and both receiver and transmitter functions contain ALC circuitry to maintain decent audio quality. There's a story here. I'd spoken about the concept at Atlanticon a while back, but hadn't had a chance to follow up until recently. Real life- including a new home and family issues - intervened. I refused to let this frankly nostalgic concept die, though. After 5 years away from the creative side of amateur radio, it's nice to be back! It's at: http://smallwonderlabs.com/Retro-75.htm That URL contains a link to assembly instructions for the Retro-75. ...and on to the next project! 73- Dave Benson, K1SWL __ QRP-L mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/qrp-l Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:qr...@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html No virus found in this incoming message. [AMRadio] A Sweaper from the early 70's
I've heard the signals that have been discussed here today, but that discussion reminded me of something I used to hear often in the early and mid 70's. It would be heard here in Mississippi as low as 40 or 80 meters during certain times of the year, but mostly on the upper bands as high as 6 meters during the spring and summer. When listening in the ssb or cw modes, the carrier sounded rather rough as it moved through the passband of my receiver. When listening on AM or FM, it appeared to have a low level of modulation which sounded like a tone of around 400 cycles. During a summer job as a dispatcher for my local police department in 1974, I had to monitor 42.38, and 45.10. That's when I made several observations: 1. The modulation was more noticeable on FM than on AM. 2. The closer the sweep came to reaching what I assumed to be the top of its range, the slower it would move. When it reached the highest frequency, it jumped back to the lowest point, and started over. 3. I learned to associate the sweep with pending band openings on 10 and 6 meters. The higher and stronger the signal, the better the E skip opening signals would be. I never learned what it was or where it was, but suspected some type of military radar. Of course, in the early 80's there was the dreaded Russian Woodpecker, which I have also heard on 6 meters. That one wasn't a sweeper; it was "broad band over radio!" If you aren't sure which unit you have, the larger one has the power transistors mounted along a section of the back panel, and has a 4 pin female microphone socket. Audio Technica was briefly mentioned in the discussion of recommended microphones. Has anyone here, especially those who primarily run rice boxes, used the Audio Technica ATR30? Jim, You were pounding into your old home town, even stronger than the SSB guys that fired up on 7159.8. My 40 meter antenna is about to have a facelift, or a complete replacement. Right now, the ends of the inverted vee are only 10 feet above ground. Couple that with my 25 watts, and I'm surprised you heard me at all. Come back and check 7160 again. Apparently some of those guys were there last night too. [AMRadio] Good Receivers for AM
In 1981, I traded a piece of equipment to a friend for a Radio Shack Realistic DX160. It was your basic slide rule dile general coverage receiver that reminded me of the old S120 that I began listening with in the mid 60s. I got it primarily as a DX receiver for the AM broadcast band, but it soon found the 1885 and 1985 gatherings on 160, along with W5PYT, K5SWK, K4KYV, et al on 75 meters. That receiver stayed with me for several years until someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse at the time. They aren't fancy, and they don't have selectivity enhancements, but they do okay for a single conversion unit. [AMRadio] 10 Meter AM Lives!
I just completed a 10 minute QSO with Harry, W0LS, north of Minneapolis, on 29.0. He was running a Flex Radio into an Alpha, and was pounding into Mississippi despite the ever-present QSB that happens during Sporadic E. He told me that he had been calling CQ for a half hour before I answered him, and that I was the first AM signal he had heard on 10 this evening. So, if you don't want to crank up the boat anchors, then dust off the transistors, punch the AM button, and make some noise on or near 29.0. [AMRadio] Michael J. Copps Named Acting FCC Chairman
Here is the text of the announcement from the ARRL site. During the 4 years I served on the Consumer Advisory Committee at the FCC, he attended most of the meetings, and appeared to at least listen to what the committee said. I found Mr. Martin to be a big disappointment in that regard. Mike Duke, K5XU Michael J. Copps Named Acting FCC Chairman On Thursday, January 22, President Barack Obama named current FCC Commissioner Michael Copps as Acting Chairman of the Commission. Last week, sources close to the President mentioned Julius Genachowski would be nominated as Chairman. Copps will serve as Acting Chairman until a new Commissioner/Chairman is confirmed. "I am honored to be designated as Acting Chairman of the FCC," Copps said in a statement released by the FCC. "I thank President Obama for his confidence in me and for this opportunity to serve. I know that I have a truly gifted and terrific team to work with. I pledge every effort I am capable of to help steer the Commission through its current transition to new leadership." ARRL Chief Executive Officer David Sumner, K1ZZ, congratulated Copps on his appointment. "Whenever we have sought a meeting with him or his staff, his door has always been open to us," he said. Currently serving a second term as FCC Commissioner, Copps began his first term with the Commission in 2001. Before his appointment to the FCC, he served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Trade Development at the US Department of Commerce, where he was previously Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Basic Industries. Copps came to Washington in 1970, joining the staff of Senator Ernest Hollings (D-SC) and served for more than a decade as his Chief of Staff. He has also held positions at a Fortune 500 company and at a major trade association. Before coming to Washington, Copps was a professor of American history at Loyola University of the South. He received a BA from Wofford College and earned a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon being sworn for his second term as FCC Commissioner in 2006, Copps said that "The last four and a half years have been tremendously transformative for the world of telecommunications and the media. The future holds even greater challenge. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on the Commission, with the Congress and with all the other stakeholders to help bring the most advanced, accessible and cost-effective communications system in the world to all American consumers." __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to amradio-requ...@mailman.qth.net with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
[AMRadio] Those Jolts that Get your Attention
Here are the two electrical shocks that I will remember forever. The first came from an "All American 5 tube" design BC radio when I was about 10 years old. I had gotten inside it, connected a pig tail to one end of the ferrite antenna, and stuck it through one of the vent slots in the back of the case. The intent was to connect it to a bunch of wire outside, which I did. But, I didn't know about insulators, grounds, etc. Ouch! Soon after that, I learned how to accomplish this with an inductor held against the back of the radio. The second came from a Viking Ranger not long after I connected an audible tuning indicator across the meter. This was the original Ranger, so most of you know where the meter appears electrically in the plate circuit. I have known that fact very well too since my right hand encountered just enough bare wire to complete a circuit across the pins of the connector I had used. Sometimes, seeing with your hands is tough! Fortunately, in both of these cases, I was only using one hand, was wearing good shoes, and was not on concrete. [AMRadio] An Appropriate Poem
There was a ham with a cubical quad, He had five hundred watts and a ground in the sod. One night he was listening in the eighty meter band, When he heard a rare station way down in Congo land. He switched on his transmitter and reach for the key, Then pounded out his call letters as fast as could be. The ham in the Congo said his readability was four, And told him to keep on sending some more. When he finally wound up that QSO, The fuse in his final was about to blow.I turned the knob and current flowed, The filaments within now glowed. I listened for those waves of short, From foreign land, the air and port. But what was this, a rising hum? It louder grew and drowned all fun. I pulled the cord and sniffed for smoke, Those roasted bugs were not a joke! I pulled the tubes and checked each one, And looked around for grounds undone. Electrolytics oozing goo, Resistors toasted black and blue. Insulation all dried and loose, No holiday for this old Goose! A cathode short or cap that fried, The coil hummed Taps and then it died. The knobs were loose, shafts warped with age, Missing was the schematic page! Dial cord was frayed, the pointer bent, The dial lamp filament was spent. The chassis dark with flecks of rust, But fix this rig I knew I must. To Internet i went with haste, To find some help, then cut and paste. With solder warm and tester hot, I searched my junk for parts forgot. With luck and coffee by the dawn, That blasted hum would all be gone! And then with eyes all red like beets, I'll turn that knob and mock defeat. Now some may think this really dumb, But solid state is just no fun! There's nothing like that magic glow, That comes from vacuum radio. So when your Halli hums so strong, Be sure to smile and hum along! Note from author W8DBF: I got an A for this silly poem about amateur radio for my tenth grade English class. [AMRadio] Other Calls from the Past
I remember hearing a guy from Kansas whose call was W0MAE. I think his name was Doug. He had a Viking 500, and he had the audio really hot. There was another guy in Hannibal, Mo who I think also ran a 500, but I don't remember his call. I usually heard these guys on 40 meters. On 75, there was a guy from Milwaukee named Bud who would pound into Mississippi as loud as WLS on a winter night. On 20 meters, I often heard W9ZKN from somewhere in Illinois, and W8YGH from Cincinnati. Of course you can't talk about 20 meters without mentioning Les, K6HQI, Fred, W6QS, and Art, whose call I can't remember, from Bean Blossom Hill, Indiana. Those guys would be the first AM operators on the band every evening, and the last ones still there when the band died. On 160 there was Les, W0GBV, from somewhere in MO. He always had a good signal, regardless of the power restrictions on top band. I have heard him as late in the morning as 9:30 AM with a readable signal into Mississippi. A bit later, Vern, Wb0SUJ was very active on 160. I believe there is still a Santa Clause Watch Net on Christmas eve in his memory. Speaking of 160, and sometimes 75, whatever became of Steve, N9FOY? [AMRadio] 75 Meter Ops
Yes, I remember Paul, Wa5FHP very well. He once told me that he lived in my home town of Newton, Mississippi for a brief time doing pipeline work, but that was long before I knew anything about ham radio, and I think even before he was licensed. I'm not sure if he is still living or not. I heard many years ago that he had an encounter of the wrong kind with a 5 KV power supply, but I did hear him on the air a few times on SSB after I heard that story in the early 80s. He would often crank up the audio so that you could hear the train pass near his house. Sometimes he would play comedy records by Dave Gardner, Justin Wilson, and others in the middle of one of his filibuster transmissions. I remember one new years eve when he got really pickled. He was pretty much gone by 7:00 PM. Someone in southeast Texas came into his qso running a Drake line with a linear in the AM mode. Paul then spent at least 20 minutes giving that guy a thorough tongue lashing for not running "a real AM transmitter." I'm not sure what he was doing to his own rig that night, but the later the hour, and the more drunk he became, the longer he would ramble, and the wider his signal became. Seriously, I have never heard an AM signal that wide before or since, not even during my CB days. One of the people that Paul talked with almost every night was Gene, WA5ATH, (SK) in Houston, who had almost as good a signal as K5SWK. [AMRadio] Activity over the Holiday Weekend
While we're talking about activity, or the lack thereof, I'll go ahead and toss out my usual reminder to make lots of noise on 15 meters if you hear strong SSB signals there over the holiday weekend. I'm not hearing anything there this afternoon, but during the contest last weekend, signals were everywhere. Re: [AMRadio] Low Power AM?
I've had several complete and quite enjoyable 20 meter AM contacts running only my TS570, which is my only functioning AM rig at present. Granted, most of the other stations were running full power, or at least a Viking II power level. But, if you can get into a qso on 20 with a reasonably good signal, it works well at low power as long as the frequency is clear. However, as was mentioned here recently, it's been months since I heard anyone on AM on 14.286, or anywhere else on 20 meters. __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/amradio@mailman.qth.net/ List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.
[AMRadio] 40 Meter AM Ops from the Past
As an SWL, I spent a disproportionate amount of time on 40 meters because a coil in my Zenith receiver opened, killing off 80 and 160. When I began listening in 1966, there was a bunch of AM on 40 meters, even throughout the night. By the time I earned my General at age 15 in 1970, about all that was left was one group on 7295, and another that usually met on 7275. Here is a brief listing of calls from those days, some of whom actually took time to dig my Viking Ranger signal out of the noise and qrm. K4AGY, known as Kingfish, spent his final years in Chattanooga, but was on the Mississippi coast with a W5 call when I first heard him. He had a DX100 with negative cycle loading as promoted by Hoisy, W4CJL, from Florence, Alabama. Kingfish also had the distinction of being listed as a silent key by QST about 4 years prior to his actual death in 1971. I still remember the pile up the first day he came back on the air after that listing. As it turned out, he had been in an automobile accident which killed his wife, and left him with a broken neck. He lived on 7195 along with Wa4PQH - Sid from Atlanta, W4ATX - Sally from NC, Ernie - W4DWE from GA, Jim - W4DXw, from SC, and many others in the southeast whose calls escape my memory. They were often joined by W4CJL, K4KYV, W8VYZ, W4ZWE, and others. The other group was mainly from Louisiana and Texas. Perhaps best known from that group by some here would be Alton Gray, W5FAP, from San Antonio. He kept almost daily schedules with his brother-in-law, Oscar, W5OEB, from the Shreveport area, along with one or two of his sons, and a few others of us who were attracted by their good signals. Other calls that I remember were WA5OXE - Henry from Houston, the original holder of W5RF - Harry, from near Laurel, Ms, W4TK - Bob from Jacksonville, and W4ZZZ - Ross, from Miami. Remember that the 40 meter voice band was only from 7.2 - 7.3 back then. Those who think the bands are crowded now should have been there when they really were! [AMRadio] Which Bands for Summer AM?
I'm sure the static level was just as high when I was an SWL in the mid and late 60s as it is today, but I lived on 40 meters at night during the summer. That's where I copied my first CW over the air. Despite the multiple occurrences of Voice of America, Radio Moscow, BBC, Radio Prague, and others, there was still a lot of aAM activity on 40 at night until about 1968 or so. The SSB activity was also pretty solid. I'm convinced there were more signals crammed into the space between 7.2 and 7.3 than there are now that the phone band has been expanded to 7.125. I now here very little AM activity on 40 meters, either day or night, and it looks like everybody has abandoned 14.286 altogether. As for that other AM band, my local BC station signed off at sunset. So, for me it was Art Roberts on WLS from Chicago, and Rob Robins on KAAY out of Little Rock. Will anyone else here admit to listening to Beaker Street, hosted by Clyde Clifford on KAAY? Those "head bangers" don't have anything on the Beaker Street gang! [AMRadio] Where to crank up on 15 Meter AM?
I read somewhere long ago that people checked 21.420 for AM activity, so that's where I've been firing up whenever I think the band may be open. However, if some of the people who *used to get on 14.286 used that crystal, they would land on 21.429, assuming, of course, that it was a 40 meter rock in the first place. Thus, the question is, should 21.429 be checked first? In an ideal world, we'd have AM contacts going from at least 21.400 to 21.445, perhaps even below 400, using whatever spacing worked. Remember, 15 meters is ours for the taking! Just think how surprised the IARU Police will be when the band pops open worldwide, and there we are; droves of AM operators! I think I'll go to sleep with that thought, and see what Saturday brings in the way of AM activity. [AMRadio] Carrier Current Devices
Early "wireless" intercom units actually used carrier current. If you and your neighbor had the same intercom equipment, and were on the same service transformer, things could become interesting, as you had an instant "listening Tom" in each other's houses. The units I played with transmitted somewhere in the lower 400 KHZ region, but their signal was so weak that I could barely detect it in a traditional receiver. [AMRadio] Carrier Current Transmission
Many, if not most, of the college radio stations before FM took hold, used carrier current to transmit their AM signal. You always had dead spots, even close to the transmitter. As late as the early 1990s, a company from Pennsylvania, LPB, was still manufacturing at least 2 carrier current transmitters. LPB stood for Low Power Broadcasting. I saw them in the exhibit hall of a conference of an FM sub-carrier broadcast group at least twice. LPB also made at least one broadcast control board. [AMRadio] Noise Update
A few weeks ago, I was one of the instigators of a thread on this list about finding and eliminating noise. I have been battling a serious noise from the BC band through 40 meters since April of last year. It had been determined that the noise was coming from something in a house about a block away on another street. Today, thanks to a third party, the noise was traced to a DVD player. Once this machine was unplugged, it went away. The player was an older model. We suspect it received a spike from some nearby lightning which occurred at about the time the problem began. He says he will replace it. So for now at least, 75 and 40 meters are useable again. [AMRadio] 7160
There is still a little AM activity there, usually on Saturday or Sunday afternoon near 2:00 PM. There are a few guys in southwest Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas that have semi-regular weekend schedules. I remember the hay day of 7160, especially on Saturday mornings and Saturday nights. There was John, W5MEU with a fine sounding BC610 from San Antonio, plus a guy named Tom, whose call I don't recall, but who had one of the best signals from a Ranger I've ever heard. There was also a guy named Paul from Illinois. Going back into the late 70s, I think the last time I heard Fred, W6QS, was on 7160 on a winter evening. Fred was loud wherever you heard him. I've never seen anything written about his station, but it would make a great subject for someone who knew him. I'm omitting many other calls from that 7160 group, but there were a bunch of guys there at least every weekend, and sometimes through the week as well. [AMRadio] Noise Update
Thanks to those who offered great information about using various noise canceling systems. Today my power company was at last able to speak directly with the owner of the home where my noise is originating. The home owner and I were able to determine which breaker causes the noise to disappear. He's checking to see what is connected to that breaker, and said he would call me back "soon." While the problem isn't fixed yet, at least there is dialogue. [AMRadio] Operating Modes
I operate AM because I enjoy the mode. Same goes for CW. I also enjoy SSB, but sometimes operate it out of necessity rather than simply for the pleasure. Those individuals who feel threatened by the simple fact that another amateur operates modes other than a given favorite need to get a life, or seek professional help. They are no more effective than the group who took grate pride in sporting their "shut up and learn the code" T-shirts following the advent of the codeless tech license. I run a "rice box" most of the time, and have found no valid reason to even consider offering an apology for doing so. Same goes for various converted CB rigs on 10 meters. [AMRadio] Re: OT SSB on 510 KHz]
Wow! The /2 station really did sound good... far better than some of the so-called enhanced ssb stations I've heard. I've not paid much attention to that experiment, so I don't know how much power or antenna the participants are allowed. I figure if we ever do see an allocation near 500 khz, it will be restricted like the current one at 60 meters. The 60 meter channels, excluding perhaps channel 3 where the government station is transmitting most of the time, produce some very good signals, but are much under-utilized now that the new has worn away. [AMRadio] Receiver Noise Reduction Devices
I'm looking for a way to reduce a received noise which is being back-fed into a nearby powerline from something inside a house about a block away. I've been working with my power company, and we are in agreement that it is coming from the owner's side of the meter. This noise is killing all but the strongest signals on 160 and 80 meters, and is almost as bad on the lower half of 40. The noise sounds like a strong white noise on 80 and 40, and more like an electric motor on 160 and the AM bc band. Will a device such as the MFJ 1025 or 1026 reduce this noise enough to be worth spending the money for it, or should I just prey for lightning in the next block? [AMRadio] Receivers
Somehow, I've managed to hang on to the HQ110A/VHF that my folks gave me for Christmas in 1968. It needs a good alignment job, and will hopefully have that soon. Then, it will be paired with a DX60. Anyone remember the Lafayette HA500? I almost settled for that one, but chose the HQ110A/VHF because it covered both 160 and 2 meters. I also have a recently acquired HQ170 that needs a thorough going through, as it only likes to work on 80 meters. In my earlier days, I started with a borrowed S120. That one is still with its original owner, who had no idea what he was starting when he loaned it to an 11-year-old for the summer back in 1966. For Christmas that year I received a Zenith, the model number of which escapes me, but it had a slide rule dial and band spread much like the S120, and drifted like an S40 on the higher bands. For brief periods I also used an RME4350A, a BC348Q, an SX62A, and an NC300. I also operated the station of a friend several times when he was using one of the "HBR" series of receivers that his dad had built from QST. His dad still has it, and it still works great. Re: [AMRadio] Frequency Question
There is a group in Louisiana that meets on 3663 several times a week. I sometimes hear them finishing up just as I get in from work. They are generally done by 5 or shortly after. I think they also meet some during the morning, but I'm not sure when. Some days they are on ssb. I also hear Louie out of Arkansas, along with some of the same Louisiana bunch on 7160 around mid afternoon on Saturday or Sunday, but not every week. When the 75 meter phone band first expanded, I heard some activity on 3685, 3710, and 3730. However, I have been battling a very noisy power pole lightning arrester since April, so I really can't address whose where down there right now. Hopefully Entergy will make good on their promise to replace the defective unit soon, and I'll be able to hear beyond my back fence again in time for the fall season. [AMRadio] 10 & 15 Meter QSOs tonight
At about 8:15 PM local time, I called cq on 29.0. I was answered by 2 or 3 stations, but managed to dig kg4ODX out of the noise. He's in NC. We talked for a few minutes, but my ongoing noise problem was making it really tough. We then moved to 21.425, where I could hear him much better. While there, I also talked with N4CZT, also in NC. We were all using barefoot Kenwoods. So, watch the 10 meter beacons and the ssb between 28.3 and 28.5.
