[android-beginners] Thank you for this Android group...

2009-12-22 Thread allanbremer
Hello all,

I just joined this group only a week or so ago and I finally programmed a
small 'Currency Converter' sample and changed it just a little. I really
love my Android G1 phone and love the fact that I can create apps on it.

Installing Eclipse, the SDK, DroidDraw, Java stuff, and all the other tools
really took a little while for me but I finally got up to speed on it. Then
it took a little while to get the Android Emulator working but I finally
got my little program to run good on the Emulator. BUT, the hardest part
for me was to figure out how to get my app on my G1 Android phone. The
first thing that took me so long was realizing that I had to download the
Windows Device Driver for the phone so that Eclipse can 'see' it. (Of
course I had to install it after I downloaded it...I forgot about that for
a little while.)

Then I had to figure out how to set-up Eclipse to recognize my phone. Well,
it all worked out. I was pretty surprised at how different apps can look on
the actual phone. Seems like a person can debug better when they look at
how the app acts on the phone.

For all of you total beginners like myself, I just want to say that the
best way to figure stuff out, to me, seems to simply keep on a googl'in
till ya get it! Read the documentation, go through tutorials and samples
like there's no tomorrow, look on youtube and google for tutorials,
google 'free ebooks' (I was amazed at the cool free ebooks I found both for
Android and for Java).

Again, I just wanted to say thanks to all you google-groupers and to let
you know that just reading the code (even though I may not understand a lot
of it) helps me in the long run. I'm now looking forward to learning from
anywhere I can learn from and I'm thanking you all for sharing your
knowledge. Thanks...al

[android-beginners] No Build option in the New Android Project dialog Box in the Eclipse IDE

2009-12-22 Thread explorer
Hi,

I am trying to build my first project for Android platform using the
Eclipse IDE.

The problem I am facing is that there is no option under the "Build
Target" label in the New Android Project dialog box. And, hence I am
not able to proceed beyond this dialog box (as the "Next" button is
deactivated.)

The online documentation says, "Under Target, select an Android target
to be used as the project's Build Target. The Build Target specifies
which Android platform you'd like your application built against."

Could anyone tell me how to bring options under "Target" label.

I am using Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) and have installed latest Android SDK
as well as all Android Platform components.

The screenshot of the dialog box is available at :
http://shared.pho.to/B2BF3343-D5DD-4ED4-F50F-468BEFC7698E

Thanks for any assistance that you can offer.

Regards,
Explorer

[android-beginners] Android architecture.. better for one activity over multiple?

2009-12-22 Thread Kevin Duffey
Hi all,

I've been learning Android.. almost done with my 3rd book now.. have a
pretty good idea of the beginner things like the life cycle, etc. One thing
that kind of perplexes me is the benefits of using multiple activities each
with their own lifecycle events in them. In a normal Swing, or other UI
based app, you usually have a single class with events to handle create,
start/stop, pause/resume, destroy, etc. From that class you can spawn
threads to do the work, change the UI, etc etc. With Android, it seems that
apps have potentially many activities. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but
each time I open a new activity represented by a new class.. that Activity
"takes over" the event processing of the app. So each and every Activity
class requires all the event methods.. just in case a user happens to hit
the BACK button at one stage of my app over another. I know I can put the
common save/load routines into a base class that extends Activity, and have
all my activites extend it.. which is probably what I will do.. but it seems
strange to me that each dialog, every screen, etc is it's own activity and I
more or less need to duplicate the code to handle pause/resume, start/stop,
etc events for each activity in case it's the one running. If I have a
splash activity that starts the main screen, then the user goes to high
scores, I have to handle the events for pause/resume, etc.. and so forth for
every screen in my game, or app. Is this what most everyone is doing? OR am
I missing the boat on this issue and there is a better way to allow say, a
single Activity to handle the full app lifecycle events from Android, and
spawning other activities ignore all those things.. knowing that the main
app activity handles the issue of saving/restoring data if need be?

Please, enlighten me if I am missing something on this. Seems like a lot of
extra coding to build what seems to be a normal Android app. Again, I
realize I can copy/paste, or subclass Activity and extend my own "common"
Activity.. I am just wondering what many of you are doing out there for this
situation.

Thanks.

RE: [android-beginners] Re: logcat question

2009-12-22 Thread tinyang
Thank you so much Steve and Mark for your replies. It is helping me
understand how to read the logcat output better. :)

I put a breakpoint on line 42, but it still crashed when I ran it with the
breakpoint. Is that the same as a debug point?

Hi tinyang,

If you're using eclipse, you can put a debug point at line 42 in
CameraPreview and see what object is null that you're trying to call a
method on.

You are already seeing them. The more refers to the lines that are just
duplicates of the lines that the RuntimeException exception above the
NullPointerException has already printed.

Re: [android-beginners]

2009-12-22 Thread Jarrod Overson
What makes you think somebody will want to go through the effort and
write code explicitly for you when you have not shown an ounce of
effort in trying to research things yourself?

You have posted nothing but questions whose answers could be found by
a simple internet search or questions asking for a potentially
significant amount of sample code. If you plan on developing anything
beyond "hello world", you will need to become familiar with
researching these things yourself.

Try to write code yourself and ask questions about specific problems
you are having, you will have a much better chance of getting
responses.

[android-beginners] Calling another class/activity

Hi ive got a class containing a button and in the on click event im
trying to call a class that creates a database and displays a query
from the db in a list view this works fine on it's own but when
trying to hook up to the button it doesn't work.

Here is code for the calling class

package project.Maps;

import android.view.View.OnClickListener;

 Intent myIntent = new Intent(v.getContext(),

Re: [android-beginners] Re: My game force closes when calling a class i made..

2009-12-22 Thread Kevin Duffey
I gotta be honest.. I am happy to see so many people interested in writing
code for Android.. but worried.. scared even when I see posts like this
where someone doesn't know Java and is trying to develop on Android. I am
not trying to be a jerk at all.. but I would strongly urge you to learn the
language to its fullest before trying to develop an application for Android.
My biggest fear is seeing the Market inundated with tons and tons of apps
that are more or less far from quality products.. and worse, causing
potentially good quality apps to push further down in the search stack such
that most users will never find them or bother to look that far down in a
search results. Right now it may not seem so big.. but with iPhone, I find
many good apps burried way down in search that I have to scroll thru tons of
horribly rated apps to get to. I wish there were a LOT better search
capabilities on market. Sort by ratings, sort by author, etc.. some way to
help alleviate the soon to be large pool of potentially crappy/horrible
quality apps. Not saying yours will be, but Android definitely makes it FAR
easier for anyone who has an idea to try their hand at developing the app.

So my suggestion is to pick up a book or two on Java programming first..
learn about OOP, then the JVM, how it works, how classes are loaded, found,
etc. Learn about sockets, and various other built in libraries and how to
use them. Then, once you have a pretty solid foundation, come back to
Android and go wild. It will truly help in your ability to develop a quality
application.

[android-beginners] Re: no text displayed on emulator in Hello World program

2009-12-22 Thread Dan Liew
When you say you see the default Android text do you mean you see
this?
http://mobilitysite.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/android-boot-thumb.jpg

or

http://www.redmondpie.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/AndroidEmulatorforWindows1.png

Because if this is what you're talking about then there may not be a
problem. The two images I referenced earlier are the boot screens so
you may not be waiting long enough for the emulator to boot up (On my
system it takes more than a minute for the emulated android OS to be
running ready to launch an application I've written).

Hello everybody,
do you think the snippet:

int volume = audioManager.getStreamVolume(AudioManager.STREAM_RING);
mediaPlayer.setVolume(volume, volume);

is correct for setting the mediaPlayer volume to the value of the

Thanks a lot,

[android-beginners] Pre-configured AVD's?

2009-12-22 Thread GGNZ
Hi

Just wondering if there are any downloadable pre-configured AVD's that
match real word devices as closely as possible, in both appearance and
functionality. It would be great if I could test my app on a Droid
emulator, for example.

If there are any where can these be downloaded from?

Thanks in advance ...

[android-beginners] Re: Eclipse always loads Android SDK content, even with non-Android projects

2009-12-22 Thread bergdev
In addition to the added memory requirements, my ability to debug the
Wind River projects (C/C++) mysteriously disappeared. Only by removing
all traces of both IDEs and reinstalling the Wind River Workbench from
scratch was I able to regain that ability.

Would the readers of this think that installing the Android SDK IDE in
a completely separate location would help? More importantly, is that
even possible.

[android-beginners] Corrupt database file

2009-12-22 Thread OrSol
Hi.
Some users of our app experiences troubles with database. App falls
with this exception:

ERROR/DBAdapterBase(747): exception opening db
ERROR/DBAdapterBase(747): android.database.sqlite.SQLiteException:
unsupported file format

In some cases our database become corrupt. Are there some standard
methods to resolve this, because only way i see is to delete database
file and recreate it from scratch, but in this case all data will be
lost.
Any suggestions how data can be saved?

I use Eclipse as development tool. Here is my hello world code:

package com.example.helloandroid;

import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
//import android.widget.TextView;

public class HelloAndroid extends Activity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
//TextView tv = new TextView(this);
//tv.setText("Hello, Android");
//setContentView(tv);
}
}

the Hello, Android just didn't show in the emulator screen, why?
I had JDK1.6, SDK2.0, and set the enviroment path and classpath. I don't
understand why can't it show in the emulator.

Re: [android-beginners] Issue with HelloWorld.

2009-12-22 Thread Faheem
Hi,

The simplest answer that i can give is wait for it to load. Android means
your Android OS is loading on to the emulator. You have to wait for some
time. This wait time can vary with system configuration.
So Wait for 5-10 mins.

A useful tip is that you don't close your emulator once you run you app.
same emulator can work for your updated application or different applicaiton
all together.
Regards,

Yousuf

Have you waited for the emulator to finish booting up?

The emulator takes a long time to boot up. It will start by displaying
a screen similar to this:

http://www.cuppadev.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Picture-3.png

It will then go to a boot screen, that will usually show an animation
whilst everything is initialising, and eventually take you to a the
"Home" screen (desktop with icons on it). Only after that will your
application launch, this usually occurs a few seconds after the Home
screen appears (depending on the speed of your processor).

Remember that once you've started the emulator, you should keep it
running so that you can launch your project quickly the next time
around. The emulator only needs to boot up the first time you use it.

Fair enough. My point was more with your perceived attitude in the OP
than your actual request. It always frustrates me when a developer
refuses to adapt for new tools and technologies, simply because they
have experience in a particular one. I didn't find it difficult to
learn Visual Studio despite being adept in Eclipse, neither did I have
trouble using Xcode when the time came to port my C++ code to the Mac.
I struggle to believe that I'm unique in this ability either.

Anyway, you already pointed out the "Developing In Other IDEs" page in
the Android developer guide. That is a useful resource for finding the
tools you need when developing on another IDE. If you want a more
integrated experience within Visual Studio (e.g. avoid switching to a
command prompt to run the build tasks, etc) You could use some of the
"External Tools" functionality to bind menu entries / key accelerators
to project build tasks. This is an example guide on how to do this
(you'll want to use the Android toolchain instead of the JDK one,
cross-reference the Android developer guide for the commands you
need):

http://www.improve.dk/blog/2007/09/29/compiling-java-in-visual-studio

You may also wish to build a language service for Visual Studio, which
will provide you with more control over the interactive cues that VS
provides you, e.g. code completion:

http://www.codeproject.com/KB/recipes/VSLanguageService.aspx

Although being an expert on Visual Studio, I'm sure you're a lot more
familiar with these aspects of the IDE than I am.

If you do choose to use Eclipse instead, there is a useful guide in
the IBM archives that is geared for people migrating from Visual
Studio:

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/library/os-eclipse-visualstudio/

I would love to use Visual Studio(being a C# developer), but Eclipse isn't
that bad. I will the UI was a little more refined and wish there was better
syntax highlighting.

But as far as I know, Visual Studio is not supported.

[android-beginners] Re: no text displayed on emulator in Hello World program

2009-12-22 Thread Nox
Maybe netbeans isn't working but in eclipse there mustn't be an error.
What versions did you use I mean Android 1.6 or higher???
In 1.6 there is no error but sometimes if I use a higher version there
will not be a window with text, but if you run it you should only tap
to install!!! After this you can open it manually.
You'll see Android is working better on eclipse.

[android-beginners] Re: sdk doesn't contain images of ui things?

2009-12-22 Thread Coco
Yeah, there's no WYSIWYG XML layout editor yet. It was the first thing
that I looked for after a Hello World. I'm hopeful that one will come
along before too long. It'd also be helpful to have a rich demo app in
the style of the SwingSet example that comes with the Java/Swing
libraries (http://java.dzone.com/news/swingset-3-jdk-6-u10-beta).
Still, I found the DroidDraw Android UI designer to be useful, if
simplistic. (http://www.droiddraw.org/) Good for some rough rapid
prototyping.

[android-beginners] how to call context menu

2009-12-22 Thread Greg Donald
I open my context menu like this:

 private OnClickListener optionsClickListener = new OnClickListener()

 registerForContextMenu( v );
 openContextMenu( v );

How can I call

registerForContextMenu( v );
openContextMenu( v );

from inside my regular menu handler here:

 public boolean onOptionsItemSelected( MenuItem item )
 {
   switch( item.getItemId() )
   {
 case OPTIONS:
   registerForContextMenu( v );
   openContextMenu( v );
   return true;

where I have no View to pass?

Thanks,

[android-beginners] Re: Searching for Hardware that runs Android

2009-12-22 Thread RNekic
Actually, I've found the G1 to be a fine device to develop on. They
can be found relatively cheap on eBay (<$200) and are fairly easily
rooted so you can work with them without a SIM or wireless carrier.
If you aren't interested in playing with firmware and such to get an
old G1 into shape, keep an eye out for a used Dev Phone 1 or Dev Phone
2. Or you can buy them new from Google for $400. There just aren't
many non-phone options yet and, personally, I just wasn't that crazy
about the Archos 5 the last time I tinkered with one at Best Buy.

Or hold out for the Nexus One...possibly available as soon as January.
Rumored to be sold unlocked and running brand spankin' new 2.1.

[android-beginners] Unable to run "HelloAndroid"

2009-12-22 Thread Jit
I'm new to Android and have been trying to run the "HelloAndroid"
application -- without any success -- for the last 5 days.

I've done the following:

A) Downloaded Eclipse Ganymede (JEE) and installed it
B) Dowloaded Android SDK
C) Installed Android 1.1, Android 1.5, Google API for Android 1.5
(with anti-virus scan disabled)
D) Set Preferences on Eclipse
E) Updated Path environment variable to point to the tools directory
F) Modified HelloAndroid source code as per the tutorial
G) Created AVD as shown in Dev Guide

I then tried to run the app through Eclipse by selecting Run > Run and
then Android application. The emulator launches but all I get is the
word 'ANDROID' and a flashing cursor. On the Eclipse console, the
following messages appear:

[2009-12-22 13:08:38 - HelloAndroid]Automatic Target Mode: Preferred
AVD 'vanilla1.1' is not available. Launching new emulator.
[2009-12-22 13:08:38 - HelloAndroid]Launching a new emulator with
Virtual Device 'vanilla1.1'
[2009-12-22 13:09:12 - HelloAndroid]New emulator found: emulator-5554
[2009-12-22 13:09:12 - HelloAndroid]Waiting for HOME
('android.process.acore') to be launched...

I also tried to run HelloAndroid through a command window as described
in Dev Guide. I launced the AVD and installed the application. The
result was the same as above. The error message was:

Error Type 1: Could not access the Package Manager!

This was follwed by usage.

I've tried the FAQ could not find a reference to this particular
problem.

Can somebody please help me locate and correct my mistake?

Thanks.

[android-beginners] Accessing Root from Android Emulator

2009-12-22 Thread Philop
I believe this question has been asked alot of times so forgive me if
I am asking again.

Here's my dilemma... When I type in SU in the Terminal emulator, I get
a "permission denied".

How do I go about it?

I read somewhere that I might have to reinstall my SDKs but before
doing that, is there any other way?

Help would be much appreciated~

[android-beginners] Notepad tutorial (v3) problems when adding a new note and rotating the screen

2009-12-22 Thread Michael Johansson
I am running into problems with the Google Notepad tutorial v3 when I
perform the following actions:

1. Press the menu button.
2. Click on Add Note
3. Rotate the emulator screen with Ctrl-F11

This results in an error msg on the emulator saying that the
application has stopped unexpectedly. I am pretty new to both Java and
Android so any help is appreciated. It seems like there is a
NullPointerException among the many error messages in logcat. Any
ideas on how to make this work better?

[android-beginners] onSaveInstanceState behaving differently when rotating the screen and anything else

2009-12-22 Thread Syx
Hi,

So I have an app that downloads and displays a list of messages. I
have two main classes that I use
 - my own adapter which extends ArrayAdapter to display the list
items in a specific way
 - and a mailbox class which has an ArrayList in it amongst other
things

Both of these classes implement Serializable. In my
onSaveInstanceState method, I have the following:

@Override
protected void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle outState) {
super.onSaveInstanceState(outState);
outState.putSerializable("savedAdapter", m_adapter);
outState.putSerializable("savedMailbox", m_mailbox);
}

I have nothing in my onStart/onResume/onPause/onStop/onDestroy
methods. My onCreate method checks whether inState is null and does
the appropriate thing.

So here is my problem:

When I rotate the screen, onSaveInstanceState() saves the all three
objects, the activity is destroyed, recreated, and onCreate() extracts
them all perfectly. Great.

However, if either press home, or open another app in front of mine
(eg, from the notification bar) then I get the following error:

ERROR/AndroidRuntime(16961): java.lang.RuntimeException: Parcelable
encountered IOException writing serializable object (name =
$MessageAdapter)
...
ERROR/AndroidRuntime(16961): Caused by:
java.io.NotSerializableException: $3

If I delete the relevant putSerializable line, then I get the same
error for Mailbox.

Why is it behaving in different ways when they are following exactly
the same activity life cycle?
And why would it throw an NotSerializableException at all when both
classes implement serializable and work when I rotate the screen?

[android-beginners] SurfaceView looses focus and doesn't restore it?

2009-12-22 Thread Unai
Hi,

I'm working on an application using a SurfaceView (which is the
callback for events in the app) and everything works fine on the first
launch, when the window looses the focus (onPause) and it gets it
back, the game thread is still running and it's drawing on the canvas
properly, but the view doesn't get input events at all. I have a log
call in the "onTouchEvent" function in the view and it doesn't get to
call that function after the first focus-lost, that's why I think it's
just not recovering it, I've tried with requestFocus() in the view's
"surfaceCreated" function, but it does nothing. Am I missing
something?

Thanks in advance.

[android-beginners] Questions on 2.0 vs 1.5 and what device to buy

2009-12-22 Thread msencenb
I'm looking to get started with Android development but I am a little
confused on the differences between 2.0 and 1.5/1.6. I want to be able
to develop for 2.0 so quite naturally this means I need a 2.0 device
correct?

That being said is it possible to test OS 1.5/1.6 on the 2.0 device or
would it have to be strictly tested on the emulator?

Also any tips on which android device is best to pick up for
development would be appreciated

[android-beginners] Eclipse : Android Manager & AVD cannot start due to missing platform

2009-12-22 Thread yapkm01
Hi,

I am new to android. I have just downloaded the latest android plug-in
for eclipse and also the latest android SDK into my c:\Program Files
directory.

The android SDK doesn’t come with the platform.

On Eclipse -> window-> preferences-> android, I cannot get the target
even after applying the ‘Apply’ and ‘Ok’ button. Reason being the
platform missing.

 So I follow the instruction as on the website.

http://developer.android.com/sdk/adding-components.html

On the installing SDK component, it says to launch the ‘Android SDK
and AVD Manager’ on eclipse.
Problem is it doesn’t work on my eclipse because I think the platform
is missing.

So I try this manually using the command prompt by type just 'android'
but it still says platform missing. Somehow the ‘android manager and
avd’ needs the first platform in order for it to work.

Please advice. Thanks.

anyone had luck using forward geocoder calls to list business address
latitude/longitudes using ..getFromLocationName(address, maxresults).?
what i found out was that the above would work if we have a specific address
, say ,"1600 amphitheater way, mountain view, CA" or just use the locality
address , say, " Mountain view, CA" but does not work for example if you say
" wholefoods , mountain view, CA.".

any tips on how to make business search..

[android-beginners] Subscript

2009-12-22 Thread Garrett
I am trying to display text with subscripts in my application. For
example, I want to display "X1 =" and then have an edittext field.
The "1" would be in subscripts. How would I accomplish this in my xml
layout file?

Re: [android-beginners] linux eclipse adt can't find valid paths

2009-12-22 Thread Kevin Duffey
Did you download the SDKs after installing the ADT? That is a common issue
I've seen. You install the ADT plugin, then you have to go into Eclipse
PRefs and select Android and on the right is the SDK location field. You
have to make sure you point that to your /tools folder.
IF you've done that, then you should be able to run ADB, either at the
command line, or using the Eclipse Windows->Android ADB. When that starts up
you get a separate window.. with three items on the left. I think they are
Available, Installed, and something else. What you have to do is select
Available on the left, then on the right all the SDKs and such show up. I
just selected ALL on the right, and installed it all. Once you do this, I
think you restart Eclipse.. then all should be good to go. If you did all
this and have the SDKs downloaded, then I am not sure what the problem is.

I don't think you can, and you probably should not need to. Your error
is on line 42 of CameraPreview.java.

Re: [android-beginners] Re: logcat question

2009-12-22 Thread Stephen Abrams
Hi tinyang,

If you're using eclipse, you can put a debug point at line 42 in
CameraPreview and see what object is null that you're trying to call a
method on.

[android-beginners] Adding set wallpaper ability to webview

2009-12-22 Thread Tee
Hi -

I've been working on an app that uses webview to display images, and I
was wondering if there was an easy way to give the app permission to
save images or set them as wallpaper, similar to how the browser would
work. Is it a matter of using WallpaperManager to identify the image
resource, capture it, then set it, or is there an easier way? I've
looked through the docs but can't find what I'm looking for. Thanks
for any help!

[android-beginners] Issue with HelloWorld.

2009-12-22 Thread Sanjeev
Hi,
I tried to execute a simple Hello World program, but the screen only shows
"ANDROID" irrespective of what string I type. I am not sure how to fix this
issue.

I am following the code in
http://developer.android.com/guide/tutorials/hello-world.html

package com.android.helloandroid;

import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
*import android.widget.TextView;*

public class HelloAndroid extends Activity {
   /** Called when the activity is first created. */
   @Override
   public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
   super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
   *TextView tv = new TextView(this);
   tv.setText("Hello, Android");
   setContentView(tv);*
   }
}

No matter what I set the string I always see only "ANDROID" string on
the simulator.

Regards,
Sanjeev

[android-beginners] Vimeo mobile video search?

2009-12-22 Thread Stephen Abrams
Hi all,

Has anyone found documentation regarding how to search for mobile content on
vimeo's site? They recently added some support for non-flash mobiles, and
going to their site on an Android phone gets you content that will open the
Android native video player when clicked, but I would like to write and app
that searches this content for display in the player myself.

Thanks,
Steve

I don't know what code to use, but if you're going to try to sell your

[android-beginners] Problem running my Projects on Ubuntu 9.10

2009-12-22 Thread Stefan
Hi,

I have a problem with Eclipse and Ubuntu. I have created a new empty
project but when I try to start it I just get a NullPointerException.
Here's the full stacktrace:

I had problems to install ADT with the Eclipse that is in the Ubuntu
repositories, so I have downloaded the precompiled version from
eclipse.org.
Is it possible that I have dome something wrong when I have setup the
ADT environment?

thanks,
Stefan

[android-beginners] Created my app - how do i put it onto my g1 phone?

2009-12-22 Thread ajb
Sunday Night - December 20th, 2009

Thanks,

Boy, there seems to be a lot of intermediate to advanced questions in
this beginners group. I've been asking for some definitely beginner
help but to no avail. It seems many of the more advanced questions get
answered here but the 'real beginner' questions don't get to much
response.

I also see the 'Send to moderators' and I'm wondering if I've really
signed up correctly? Is it just that all messages go to the moderators
first?

My main question is this: I have created an app that seems to run
successfully on the emulator using Eclipse and the android plub-in. (i
also used DroidDraw). Now I would like to put it onto my G1 phone to
see how it acts. I don't know how to go about doing it. Help would be
appreciated - thanks to you all...

[android-beginners] Custom View for arranging ImageViews

2009-12-22 Thread k_day
I would like to build a custom view that contains a number bunch of
Images. I need to be able to specify the coordinates of where these
images are drawn in the view, and I would like to be able capture when
the images in this view are clicked on and perform an animation using
the animation framework.

What I was hoping was that I could add an ImageView to this custom
view by specifying the coordinates at which it would be drawn, but I
am not sure that is possible. Can anyone help me figure out how to
create a view with a bunch of ImageViews at arbitrary locations?

[android-beginners] Chance font of replied HTML e-mails

2009-12-22 Thread melino
When I reply to an HTML e-mail from the build in e-mail client of
Android 2.0 the font Tahoma is used.
Is there a way to change it? I am not familiar with Java/Android
programming but not afraid to testing with the emulator.
I have managed this with the WebOS emulator. I had to edit a Java
script file there. So I am confident to have such a option in Android,
too.
A short discription of what to do would be great, like get the
com.android.email and edit line xx...

Thanx!

[android-beginners] How to create this UI using a minimum of custom view code

2009-12-22 Thread Gabe
I want to create a UI for my app that I know doesn't quite exist but I
hope to come close to before I have to write a custom view class.
Here's what I want:

*The bottom 10% or so of the screen is fixed- the same bit of data
will be displayed and is non-scrollable
*The top 90% or so is a scrollable tree- sort of like a file
directory widget on a lot of OSes, but there's going to be 2 or 3
columns of data for each item, and some of the text needs to be
colored differently (its a financial app, I want to use red for loss
and black for profit). It has more than 2 levels of depth, so
expandable list view isn't suitable (unless you can add a ELV inside
an ELV but make only the outer one scroll). I could write one from
scratch, but I don't want to go through all the minor details that
make a good UI like creating icons to show whether an item is
expandable or not. Is there anything prebuilt I'm missing?

Gabe

[android-beginners] Re: Searching for Hardware that runs Android

2009-12-22 Thread Stefan
I'm not sure the Archos is the best developer device for Android.
AFAIK it still uses Android 1.5 and doesn't have the official market.
I would suggest you the Motorola Droid/Milestone depending where you
live. And there are still the rumours about the google phone
from HTC that has been handed out to googlers. You may wait till this
arrives, if ever.

[android-beginners] Albums not showing saved images until after restarting device

2009-12-22 Thread GregAZ
I'm writing an app that will include saving images from the web.
Everything is working great on the emulator, but on the phone I'm
stuck rebooting in order to see them.

The app is using 1.5 and the device is an HTC Hero from Sprint.

I'm using the following for saving the images:
String response = MediaStore.Images.Media.insertImage
(getContentResolver(), pngImage, "My Title", "My Description");

After saving on the simulator I'm able to go into the album and see
the saved images. On the device they aren't there until I reboot the
phone. Is there a way to get them to show up on the phone without
having to reboot first? This will definitely annoy and confuse users.

Thanks!

[android-beginners] Re: dig code out of apk

2009-12-22 Thread Coco
That's the correct answer of course but this brings up two questions
that I have which I'm hoping someone will answer.
1) Has anyone found a solution or workaround for the fact that the ADT
plug-in won't work if the Subclipse plug-in is also installed?
2) How hard is it for someone else to extract/decompile/rip-off my
code?

I found that I can maintain multiple Eclipse installations, each with
it's own plug-in for the projects that need each, so for the moment
I'm not horribly hampered by needing both plug-ins for the same
project, but I definitely need to understand what my risks are due to
pirating, and ATM I have no idea. I'd be happy to use a code
obfuscator if one was available as a plug-in, but I haven't heard of
one. And then obfuscation only makes reverse-engineering more
difficult, but more difficult than what?

Thanks,
-Melinda

I found that putting the line "getWindow().requestFeature

super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
// Let's display the progress in the activity title bar, like
the

getWindow().requestFeature(Window.FEATURE_PROGRESS);

setContentView(R.layout.main);

setContentView(webview);
setProgressBarVisibility(true);

webview.getSettings().setJavaScriptEnabled(true);

Re: [android-beginners] Cannot stream youtube for playback through emulator.. coding isssues..

2009-12-22 Thread Stephen Abrams
Hi Valentino,
You won't be able to use that standard URL as you would in a browser. That
will load a page with a flash player, which will play the embedded content.
What you will want to do to use the Android player (which is not Flash) with
YouTube content is to search with parameters specifying the video formats
you would like, in such a way that you'll get the direct video streaming
URLs instead of one for Flash.

You can read up on the YouTube api documentation to figure out how to search
for valid video content. I've been playing with (
http://gdata-samples-youtube-search-py.appspot.com/) to get some samples to
see the videos works at this point, though. Once I do the search there I
grab a couple valid (H263, MPEG-4) URLs and throw them in the code.

I have a slightly different implementation in my sand box, but this is how
I'm doing it. Also, this did not work on the emulator, but it worked on a
real G1. (The YouTube vids didn't work on the emulator, but if you want one
I know works just to test your code try out "
http://www.jhepple.com/SampleMovies/niceday.wmv";

Side note: Flash looks like its only really supported on the HTC Hero for
now, though to my understanding Adobe is working on expanding support for
more platforms (so until then we're not grabbing the YouTube flash player in
a WebView/browser)

2009-12-22 Thread Eyal
Hi,
I trying to create an application, for my use, which divide the
homepage screen, horizontally, to two separated sub screens one
displays my application content and the other displays the icons of
the homepage.
My application displays the current whether in selected cities.
Thanks, Eyal

I suppose this needs GPS functionality. I you are going to run this
application as a SERVICE (run on the background), would it drain the battery
life?

that would be a bit of a security problem if you could do that. you could
write a simple peer-peer app that would need to be running on all
discoverable phones. of the the user needs to explicitly run the app.

Droid has.

Anyone have any ideas, or links to point me in the right direction?

[android-beginners] Why is it so hard to make a point move?

2009-12-22 Thread redcat
I want to have a screen with snowflakes falling (in the spirit of the
Holiday Season) and the snow building in the bottom of the screen. So
far all I have been able to do is show a lone white dot on the black
screen. What should I do to make another 100 or 1000 of those dots and
make them float down to the bottom of the screen just like real
snowflakes?

int y = generator.nextInt(100) +1;

[android-beginners] Need help understanding # of available DIPs on a screen

2009-12-22 Thread Cranke
Hi Folks,

I have read through the "Supporting Multiple Screens" (http://
developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html) tutorial
and have some questions.

Basically, I am trying to figure out the proper sizes for my content,
especially images, such that it will fit in the smallest screen type
[QVGA - 240x320, 120DPI]. I am sizing my images using Device
Independent Pixels (DIPs). I'd like to understand what the maximum
number of DIPs would be for the QVGA screen.

Based on the tutorial above, I believe that DIPs can be calculated as
follows:

# of DIPs = # of Physical Pixels / (density/160)

Thus, for the QVGA screen type, I would expect the following number of
DIPs:

Width: # of DIPs = 240 / (120/160) = 320
Height: # of DIPs = 320 / (120/160) = ~427

To test things, I setup a simulator on my computer by launching the
Android emulator as follows:
  - "emulator -avd avdQVGA -scale 81dpi"
  - Where "avdQVGA" is an AVD I setup via Eclipse to be a QVGA screen.
  - My monitor has a DPI of 96.

Finally, I put in 400 DIPs worth of vertical images and margins. I
was surprised to find that the content spilled over the bottom of the
screen (i.e. it didn't all fit). I expected to be able to squeeze
~427 DIPs worth of content into this screen.

Is there something wrong with my ~427 DIP calculation? Can someone
please explain why my 400 DIPs of images/margins do not fit on the
screen?

Help with this would be most appreciated. I'd like to understand
where I have gone wrong. I can provide more details on my test
project if required.

Thanks,

/Cranke

Re: [android-beginners] Re: Bridging the gap between Java and Linux/C

2009-12-22 Thread Kevin Duffey
You will need to use JNI and you'll still have to use Java. Keep in mind
that Android is mostly about Java development. NDK is still fairly new and
as of yet can't access many things that you can only access via Java. This
is why advanced music apps, and even high quality games are tough at the
moment to write for Android.

Re: [android-beginners] Re: Wanting to start and would like a good book. Suggestions?

2009-12-22 Thread Kevin Duffey
I second the www.commonsware.com/android stuff. It's WELL worth $35. I've
read the books you talk about, and honestly, Mark (the author) of the
commons books does a better job at explaining things. You get 3 books too,
not just one. Plus I believe they are updated.. although not sure if/when a
notification is sent when an update is available and what was updated. I am
1/2 thru the first one and have picked up a few more things I didn't get
from the other books. I am looking forward to the advanced one.

[android-beginners] Re: java.net.SocketException: Permission denied (maybe missing INTERNET Permission)

2009-12-22 Thread Dirk Manske
Spending whole day to find out that Android is not playing well with the
authentication mechanism in google data api.

The following code runs fine in a standard JavaSE environment but fails
with a java.io.SocketException in Android:

"Permission denied (maybe missing INTERNET permission)".

public class PicasaWebServiceTest {

 /**
  * @param args
  */
 public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {

 PicasawebService pws = new PicasawebService("xxx-picasa-1");

 pws.setUserCredentials("x...@gmail.com", "xxx"); // fine in
JavaSE, fails in Android
 System.err.println("done");

 }

}

Any idea how to circumvent this?
