When I need to show dialog windows I use my parent context. That was the only way I could show them with no BadTokenException. But when showing a search window I don't use any context as parameter. It seems that my embedded activity does not have the window token, but its parent. However a TabActivity is an ActivityGroup and we can show dialog windows without problems. Does anybody know how the TabActivity gives the token to the embedded activity (if it's really what happens)? I could just see a focus request, what I also do in my implementation. I tried using setDescendantFocusability(FOCUS_AFTER_DESCENDANTS) on my ActivityGroup layout, and then I got a different error message: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(871): android.view.WindowManager$BadTokenException: Unable to add window -- token android.app.localactivitymanager$localactivityrec...@4376ad40 is not valid; is your activity running? [android-developers] ActivityGroup + embedded Activity search window
Hi all, I have an ActivityGroup with an embedded TabActivity and another simple Activity. The TabActivity has three tabs, each one with a ListActivity. When I try to start a search from a list (calling onSearchRequested()), I get a WindowManager$BadTokenException. I've tried requesting focus in the list, but the same error occurred. Didn't work... if I only start B and after destroy B without destryoing A, nothing happens to A. But looking at TabHost implementation I could see what I was forgetting: requestFocus! [android-developers] Always-showing view among activities
Hi all! Is there a way to have a view always-showing between activities? I say, I need a button to be always appearing on the bottom of the screen. I could get it working with an ActivityGroup, but I got a problem. My application can work with more than one level of activities, or rather, Activity A can start acitivity B that can start Activity C, all them with the button showing in the bottom. When I press Back, I need activity C to finish and the focus to go back to B, but as I'm using an ActivityGroup, it does not work. Is there another way to do that? I get the three activities views by using View viewA = getLocalActivityManager().startActivity(mActivityAId, mActivityAIntent).getDecorView() (for A, B and C) I need viewA to be aligned to its parent top edge, and viewC to be aligned to its parent bottom edge. viewB must be below A and above C. For that I've created a RelativeLayout(mMainLayout), and then, since I have the 3 views, I add them to that layout setting the LayoutParams properly. I've also tested finding a view by its Id, and in fact I can not find views by Id that were not created in the same activity as the main layout. Explaning more clearer, I've replaced viewA for a local TextView, added it to mainLayout and then tried to find it via mainLayout.findViewById(viewA.getId()), and it worked fine. But when I used the real desired viewA (the activity A decor view), findViewById returned null view. Am I doing anything wrong? Was it designed to work this way? Or is it a bug? Thanks Android :) But I have a problem. I've tested destroying A and starting it again, but when I do startActivity(id) I get a null window. Do I need to use a different id whenever I start an activity (with the same intent), even if I pass false when I destroying (or rather, pausing) such activity before restarting it? I've tested passing true and false when destroying A, but both result on null window. I believe it's related with the activity id. I could notice that if the three views are created using exactly the same context, the below rule works fine. But my views come from different activities (but from the same application - I don't know if an Activity has *exactly* the same context as its application). In this case such rule does not work. Is there a way to receive key events in such situation? When the call screen is paused, it receives end call key event. Can I receive a specific key event in a similar situation? In fact I do need to handle key strokes. It would be easier if I could handle home key, so that I could prevent the user from going to home screen. I think it's not a good approach to finish my Activity when it's paused as well. And it would be very boring for the user to go back to the Activity whenever he wanted to press a key and make stuff... Is there a way to register for receiving key strokes if my application is compiled with the emulator/device image? (should I ask it on android-platform?) Hi all, I have the following scenario: - a main task and a secondary task - the secondary task has only one Activity - when that Activity is paused (e.g. Home key pressed), a notification is inserted to the Notification Bar, so that the user can go back to it (such as voice call does) My problem is: I need the paused Activity to receive key events. 1) Is that possible? 2) If so, how? It depends on the action that the message triggers. I had just this same situation. In my case, the message after the killer message would have triggered an action that is not valid once the activity is finished. Since there is no magic link between the handler and the activity I had to make one: I implemented handleMessage() in such a way that it dropped messages if the activity was finished. In your case, if the message after the killer message is handled harmlessly when the activity is finished then you don't need to do anything special about it. Just leave it in the queue and it let your handler take care of it. Hope this helps. So semantics of the Cursor interface is not delineating a clear forward only and random access semantics. But I believe the implementation is efficient enough if you follow the forward only semantics. This implies reading getCount early on is not a good thing if you are trying to read every row and do something with it. It may not be a bad idea to wrap the cursor interface and don't expose the getCount() and random movement methods and make the contract explicit to the clients. Hope that helps. Maybe there is an option via telnet (doing a telnet to the emulator port, it opens an emulator console..look there if there is an appropiate command for binaries sms)..but I have not checked it (I did that by means of another phone emulator) About receiving binary SMS, I was trying to send them using a port..but in the emulator I was not able to receive them by port...But I think it is just an emulator problem, because Joe says this works on the G1. Related to the problem of sending binary sms to port, I have changed
that parameter to null, and I send the data message using a port from
5554 emulator to 5556. This seems to work looking to the log
files.
The problem is that I am not able to receive the SMS data message in
the 5556 phone. So there must be something I am doing wrong.
In order to receive the SMS to port messege in 5556 I have created
a BroadcastReceiver listening to the
android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED action.
I did not know how to declare the port that this receiver is listening
to...so I figured out that maybe it was declared using the port option
in the manifest..
receiver android:name=.ServerMessagesReceiver
intent-filter
action android:name=android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED /
data android:port=16001/data
/intent-filter
/receiver
Is this the right way to declare the port that this SMS receiver is
listening to? I suppose the problem is there

So. DDMS location tool loads them ok..I am able to se both the points
and the track...and when I pressed the button play it seems that is
processing the file...but my test application does not receive
anything.
Ludwig, can you please write in this thread a brief example of a GPX
file that works for you? Maybe the problem is related with the gpx I
have downloaded
I include also some of my test code, maybe there is somthing I have
misssed
By the way, I am running on Windows XP SP2 ...

I use two emulators, one is launched at 5554 and the other at 5556 and
I try to send the binary sms from 5554 to 5556.
In the 5556 phone I have launch an application with a
BroadcastReceiver in order to receive SMS Messages (but I do not know
how to specify the port)
The application does not failed. But the 5556 phone does not receive
anything.
Instead, in the console I receive the following messege every time I
do a try

Strange but it seems that the adb is receiving the request...
Does anybody has an example on how to send/receive binary SMS to an

The problem is that I want also the server to send some kind of events to the phone..so I need also to open a comunication from the central server to the phone... Hi! I am trying to show the zoom controls over a MapView in the new 0.9 SDK. I have been able to show the zoom Control View using the following code // Zoom View View zoomView = mMapView.getZoomControls(); zoomView.setLayoutParams(new ViewGroup.LayoutParams (ViewGroup.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, ViewGroup.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT)); mMapView.addView(zoomView); mMapView.displayZoomControls(true); Using this code, I have been able to show the Zoom Control View at the top-left edge the screen (over the map). However, I will want it to be a the bottom of the screen, and I do not know how to move it to that position. I have tried to use de ViewGroup method requestChildRectangleOnScreen, in order to move the zoomView to the position I want, but I have been not able to make it work.
