[android-developers] Is it possible to read/write to SQLite on a removable USB Flash Drive

2018-04-05 Thread Mark Anderson
Is it possible to read/write to SQLite on a removable USB Flash Drive, by
this I mean the app is installed on the phone, but the data used by the app
would be stored on a removable USB flash drive that plugs into the
USB/Charging port.

I have been reading a lot and for the most part references to this suggest
the data must be in the same location as the app. I need the data to be
external to the app so different databases can be used as required. If it
is possible, I would appreciate a reference to some example or explanation.

thanks

[android-developers] How do I monitor the phone status in Android O

2017-08-25 Thread mark sheekey
I need to be able know the phone status, ie ringing, idle, off hook etc.
I register a broadcast receiver in a foreground service. I have removed the
intent filter from the manifest. - I believe this is all that's needed.

I get the status ok in pre Oreo devices but nothing on an Android Oreo
device. Is there something I've missed or is this impossible now?

Thanks.

Re: [android-developers] Why is there NO good Viewpager tutorial on the Internet??

2017-01-01 Thread Mark Phillips
Considering the fact that everyone on this list is a volunteer, I suggest
you moderate your tone if you want to get any help at all.

If no one has written a viewpager tutorial that meets your needs, then
probably no one needed one. I suggest you look at the source code and api
documentation, build some simple test apps so you learn how the view pager
works, and then write the best viewpager tutorial that has ever been
written. You will surely receive all the accolades you deserve for your
efforts.

[android-developers] [APP][3.0+] Wishy

2016-12-21 Thread Mark Lovegalaxynexus
Hi,
I’m a 19-years-old developer and I’ve just finished “Wishy”, my last
Android App. Thanks to Wishy you can schedule SMS and e-mails,
personalizing each message for every recipient. That’s perfect for
Holidays! How many messages do we send every Christmas or every New Year
without addressing it to the people receiving? Thanks to Wishy you can
write a single message, set a date and an hour of sending and let the App
modify each message with the name of the recipient, his number or the date
set up before.
Obviously Wishy is not only thought for Holidays, and it is also useful to
set up a meeting or organize a dinner with your friends, when you want to
address everyone with its own name but there’s too many people to write to.
Wishy is a perfect way to say goodbye to anonymous messages.

I hope you'll like my app, and for every suggestion, please reply

Play Store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=marco.wishy

P.s. Full email support will come in a couple of days!

Re: [android-developers] I want to Teach Middle School Students Android Programming

2016-09-28 Thread Mark Phillips
Chris,

I applaud you enthusiasm. IMO, android programming is a big leap forward
for middle school non-programmers right out of the box. However, MIT has
created an "app-inventor" project to address just what you want to do.
http://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/index-2.html. I have not used it, but
from the description it is based on a drag and drop principle for
components and then linking the boxes together to make it work. Something
like that may work for you.

Google has produced some very good video courses for beginning Android
programming on udacity, but the cost is $199/month/seat. Perhaps Google
would give you free access to these courses? The first one is 165 hours of
instruction, so it may be to large for what you want. These courses are
real programmer courses, ie you have to use the APIs to find some of the
information needed to build the projects. It may be too much for all but
the most advanced middle schoolers in your classroom.

There are lots of middle/high school programming resources on the Internet
for web based programming. This approach to learning programming may be
easier for you and the students to grasp. Some examples...in this case,
Google is your friend.

https://code.org/educate/curriculum

Good luck!

Re: [android-developers] App having Backend to store data

2016-09-18 Thread Mark Phillips
What will happen to your app if the phone cannot connect to your server?
For example, no service, no wifi, or in airplane mode?

You might want to look at having local storage on the phone for the app's
information and have a background task keep the local storage in sync with
the server.

I have also been bothered by all the spam job postings. I use gmail, so as
they started to arrive in my inbox a few weeks ago I just selected them as
spam, and now I hardly ever get any. It took a few weeks for the gmail spam
filter to learn to block these job posting emails, but now they are gone!

[android-developers] Re: Why does 'adb devices' show 'unauthorized' with no 'allow' prompt on the device?

2016-06-05 Thread Mark Hansen
Well, still not working. I've built a brand new Intel-based desktop PC.
Installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and Android Studio 2.1.1 (along
with various other software needed, like Java 8, etc.).

I have the Samsung OEM USB drivers installed and also installed the USB
driver that comes with Android Studio.

When I connect my device, I still don't get the prompt on the device to
allow debugging. I've turned on the developer options, enabled USB
debugging, revoked USB debugging auth, run adb kill-server and then adb
start-server. When I run adb devices, it shows my device as unauthorized.

Note that I have three Android devices: Samsung Galaxy S6 64gb, Sansung
Galaxy Note 5 and Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. I get the same
result from all three.

Is Android Studio (or, I guess the SDK used by it) just broken? I've been
trying suggestions for quite a while now and can't find the key to making
this work.

Note that if I connect my device via USB and copy the APK file to the phone
and install it manually, it works. I just can't connect to it using adb.

If there is someplace else where I can post my question to get help, please
let me know - I just don't know where to go with this.

Thanks,

Re: [android-developers] Guys plz help ...getting this error

2016-05-07 Thread Mark Phillips
The file may be there, but it appears to be empty - look at the error
message. Check the size of the file and the path to the file - you may be
looking in the wrong place for the file when you say "file is still on
location."

On my Ubuntu system I have the following -
mark@tsunami:~/junk$ locate support-annotations-23.3.0.jar
/home/mark/Android_Studio/sdk/extras/android/m2repository/com/android/support/support-annotations/23.3.0/support-annotations-23.3.0.jar
/home/mark/Android_Studio/sdk/extras/android/m2repository/com/android/support/support-annotations/23.3.0/support-annotations-23.3.0.jar.md5
/home/mark/Android_Studio/sdk/extras/android/m2repository/com/android/support/support-annotations/23.3.0/support-annotations-23.3.0.jar.sha1

The jar file is 19K in size.

You could also try downloading the sdk again.

[android-developers] Re: Why does 'adb devices' show 'unauthorized' with no 'allow' prompt on the device?

2016-04-30 Thread Mark Hansen
I just tried to install Android Studio 2.x on a different laptop, which
I've never used before for Android development. It is running Windows 7
Home Premium and is an AMD-based laptop. AS runs okay (although a bit slow)
but I'm not able to connect to my phone device via adb. It also says
unauthorized and don't prompt me on the phone to allow connecting. I turned
off developer options, then turned it back on again. I then enabled USB
debugging and then revoked authorizations. I then did an 'adb kill-server'
and then a start-server but still, no prompt on the phone to allow USB
debugging.

[android-developers] Re: Why does 'adb devices' show 'unauthorized' with no 'allow' prompt on the device?

2016-04-29 Thread Mark Hansen
I tried installing Android Studio 2.x on my PC at work. It is also running
Windows 7 (although it is Enterprise edition). On that machine, I was able
to connect my phone and 'adb devices' recognized it. I was prompted (on the
phone) to allow USB debugging and was even able to deploy a sample
application to the phone and run it.

The problem seems to be with my specific PC. As I said before, I had
uninstalled Android Studio (which includes the SDK) and reinstalled it, but
this didn't help. There must be something else which needs to be cleaned up
which is not - that is preventing the phone from asking if it is okay to
debug via USB.

Can anyone please help? I really can't re-install the OS on my PC or
replace it with a new machine - there must be some way to debug this.

Is there someone to whom this can be escalated when the easy answers don't
apply?

Thanks,

It's really acting like there is something on my machine which is
preventing the phone/tablet devices from accepting the debug command
(prompt, whatever it is) so the device just doesn't ask. As I've said, I
tried uninstalling Android Studio (which includes the SDK) and removing the
.android directory which is in my HOME directory and reinstalling, but this
didn't help. Is there something else I can clean out to get this working
again?

If I'm asking in the wrong place, can someone please let me know where this
should go?

I'm really stuck at this point.

Thanks,

[android-developers] Re: Why does 'adb devices' show 'unauthorized' with no 'allow' prompt on the device?

2016-04-27 Thread Mark Hansen
I just tried a second device (this one is a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014
Edition tablet) which was also previously working (with the older version
of ADT) and it reacts the same way (unauthorized). I then tried my wife's
brand new note 5 and to my surprise, it does the same thing. I tried all
the steps from my original post, but it still shows as unauthorized by
'adb devices'.

What could the problem be? As reported above, I've uninstalled Android
Studio (and ADT) and re-installed. Is it possible there's a problem with
this version of Android Studio (and/or ADT)?

What can I do to debug this problem? Is there any way to turn on extended
debug logging?

Thanks for any help.

[android-developers] Why does 'adb devices' show 'unauthorized' with no 'allow' prompt on the device?

2016-04-24 Thread Mark Hansen
I've asked this on Stack Overflow, but so far no solution:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/36816530/why-does-adb-devices-show-unauthorized-with-no-allow-prompt-on-the-device

I've installed Android Studio 2.0 on my Windows 7 PC. This included the
Android SDK. I've done Android development on this PC before using Eclipse
+ ADT and an earlier version of Android Studio, which worked (at that
time). I've uninstalled the old version of Android Studio and installed the
new (current) version. Also, based on the prerequisites for Android Studio,
I've installed Java J2SE 1.8.0 update 92 (JDK).

Now, when I attempt to connect to my phone (Samsung Galaxy S6) via USB,
'adb devices' shows 'unauthorized' and I never receive a prompt on the
phone to allow USB debugging.

I have USB configuration set to MTP and when I plug the phone into the USB
cable, I get the auto-play prompt on the PC and I'm able to see device in
Windows/Explorer and browse its directories, etc.

I've uninstalled the OEM USB drivers for my device and re-installed them.
I've turned USB Debugging off/on. I've Revoked USB debugging authorization
under developer options on the phone, I've run 'adb kill-server' and 'adb
start-server'. I've tried different USB cables and ports. I've restarted
both the computer and the phone. I've verified there is only one instance
of 'adb.exe' on the PC and that it is in the location identified by
ANDROID_SDK_HOME ($ANDROID_SDK_HOME/platform-tools/adb.exe).

There was a directory named .android in my $HOME directory which contained
a lot of keys and configuration files, etc., so I uninstalled Android
Studio again and manually moved that directory out of the way and then
re-installed, but this didn't help.

I'm wondering if there is a setting on the PC (or phone) which tells adb
that we don't need to prompt to allow USB debugging which needs to be
cleared?

Can someone please help me?

[android-developers] How to get Push Notification from Facebook Page-Feed

2016-02-27 Thread Mark van Limburg
After quite some time of working on a facebook login application and
getting page-feed from a public page.
My next attempt is to get Push Notifications when a post is made on a
public page.
However after hours and days of searching, i still have no results.

I have noticed that i am supposed to work with a callback url so that
Facebook updates the url with their latest data.
But that does not explain to me how i can get a push notification to the
application and updates the user that a new post has been made and then
shows into the "Page Feed" activity.

Is there anyone who can guide me in the right direction?

Follow up.
I changed "JSONException" and "ParseException" to "Exception" only and
suddenly everything works.
I am super stoked! Thank you so much for helping out.

Re: [android-developers] How to change Format of the Facebook SDK "Created_Time"

2016-02-23 Thread Mark van Limburg
Ok thanks Ralph.
I have been entering the code and replaced my previous 2 lines.
However what i do not understand is that i suddenly get an error:
"Date date = formatIn.parse(created_time);"
Unhandled Exception: java.text.ParseException < that's my error.
i can't set the "catch" to ParseException because then the rest of the code
stops working.
so the "catch" has to remain JSONException.
i'm struggling with this code for some time now. I am sorry if i ask for
too much help.

Thank you for the links.
I am aware of it that i need to use SimpleDateFormat.
But i am struggling with where to put the code.
Everytime i seem to want to add something, i get error here and error there

According to the earlier pasted Class file, where would you paste the

Hi, i am extremely new to Android Development.
I have a little bit of coding background, but its very little.
Right now, i am working on an application that connects to Facebook and
after login succesful it shows a simplified "feed" of a page. (this because
i want to make something personal that notifies me when a page-update has

I cannot seem to figure out why this isn't working.

The second issue is that when I create the android virtual devices and try

computer is saving them in the root/.android directory and not the one that
the sdk tool is looking for. I am new to all of this and very confused.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Embeded ListViews

2016-01-22 Thread Mark Phillips
Matt,

Assuming your data has some sort of hierarchy (ie Graph_10.jpg), then you
only need one listview in an activity. As the user drills down into your
data (ie selects an element from the list), all you need to change is the
data displayed in the same listview. You don't need an infinite set of
nested listviews, you just need to change the data behind the listview.

In a nutshell, a listview has a dataAdapter providing the data. Once the
user makes a selection in the list view, change the data in the adapter and
use notifyDataSetChanged on the listview and the data displayed will change
to the new data set.

There are lots of examples on how to do this - Google is your best friend
here.

As an aside, you may want to do some research on Android UI best practices.
Looking at your data graph, I see two potential problems with a listview
solution.

1. (breadth issue) You might end up with a listview having scores of
elements at a particular level, and few will be willing to scroll all the
way through that list to find what they want. You might want to take a look
at the google contacts app as one way to handle this particular problem.

2. (depth issue) The other problem you face is it may take 10 or more steps
to drill down to the final piece of data. This is annoying to the user in
the number of clicks it takes to get to the bottom of the hierarchy, as
well as the difficulty of getting back to the top, the middle, or somewhere
else in that hierarchy. Very easy to get lost and frustrated with this
approach.

You may want to take a hard look at the real problem you are trying to
solve for the user with all this data and find a different UI strategy that
solves that problem.

I hope that helps shed some light on your questions, and good luck!

[android-developers] How to make interactions like html in android native java?

2016-01-12 Thread Mark Thomson
Hi Everyone,

I am a web developer and I have an android hybrid app built in cordova.

We are moving the app now from hybrid to native for android, now in hybrid
we have many interactions in which we have use javascript and css3.

Now for example, we have a drag and drop functionality where we use jQuery
UI to make drag and drop interactions. Now the dragged items can be dropped
in one out of two containers. Based on dropped items quantity we make a
seesaw effect using CSS3 transform rotate property. So now this makes a
weight balancing interaction. You can check the screenshot below.

I found some tutorials on drag and drop but I have no idea on how can I
make that seesaw effect. So can you guys help me out here, if you had to
make this thing then what would be your approach, I am not expecting a full
source code help but just a right way out here some tutorials or examples
will also do.

I am not an expert in Native Android, but I have previously worked on
android projects.

[android-developers] Problem with Adding Action Buttons in the Action Bar Using Pager and Fragments

2015-12-15 Thread Mark Phillips
My app has three tabs and I am using a pager to switch between the tabs.
Each tab has its own fragment. I added the Settings and Help action buttons
to the action bar in the main Activity using the OptionsMenu methods. I now
want to add a new action button to the action bar, but just for the first
tab and first fragment, and I don't want it to appear on the other
fragments when they are displayed in their tabs.

I have this layout for the main menu that is created in the main activity -

http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android";
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto";
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools";
tools:context=".MainActivity">

This menu displays correctly and works as expected.

I have another menu, menu_prelaunch_fragment for the first fragment -

http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android";
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto";>

and I add it to the action bar using the following code in the first
fragment -

@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstance) {
Log.d(TAG, "onCreate");
super.onCreate(savedInstance);
setHasOptionsMenu(true);
}

@Override
public void onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu, MenuInflater inflator) {
Log.d(TAG, "onCreateOptionsMenu");
inflator.inflate(R.menu.menu_prelaunch_fragment, menu);
super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu, inflator);
}

@Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
Log.d(TAG, "onOptionsItemSelected");
if (item.getItemId() == R.id.clear_form)
clearFragmentData();
return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item);
}

The problem is that this added button does not go away when I go to the
other fragments on the other pages/tabs. The other fragments do not have
any options menu code in them.

I then added this code to the other fragments to remove the one button.

@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
Log.d(TAG, "onCreate");
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setHasOptionsMenu(true);
}

@Override
public void onPrepareOptionsMenu (Menu menu) {
menu.findItem(R.id.clear_form).setVisible(false);
super.onPrepareOptionsMenu(menu);
}

But now the clear button does not appear in the action bar regardless of
what tabs are selected.

How do I add an action button to the action bar just for one tab (ie
fragment) in my three tab (ie three fragment) app? It should only appear
when that tab (fragment) is selected (displayed).

Thanks!

[android-developers] Changing Google Play Store Title - Any Effects?

2015-12-14 Thread Mark
Hi I was wondering whether changing the name of your app on the Google Play
store (not actually changing but adding more words) will reset any
stats/data/rankings on your app?

Just want to make sure that updating the title will not have a negative
impact on the title from a SEO point of view.

Many thanks for any help.

Re: [android-developers] Who translates google play apps?

2015-12-12 Thread Mark Phillips
I was curious about the cost of translation as well, so I googled it. I
found this site (
http://www.icanlocalize.com/site/services/android-localization/) and their
prices -

0.09 USD / word for expert translation or 0.135 USD / word including review
of the app’s texts and description on the Android marketplace.

I have never used their services, so I have no idea if they are any good,
or if the price is fair.

I have done some translation work in other areas (German and French), and I
will say that given the short phrase used in an app, one can't just use
Google translate on the words. The context is critical to make a native
sounding translation. This is true for all translations, but especially for
the phrases in an app.

Anyway, I would go with the $0.135 price, unless you can find a native
speaker to help you out.

Good luck!

[android-developers] Adding rewarding video to my game

2015-12-11 Thread Mark
Hello ,

I know this is ok in apple app store.. I'm pretty new to android. I wonder
Is it ok to add rewarding option to my game , earn more coins by simply
watching an advertisement video.. As google play developer agreement I'm
not planing to restrict game function unless user didn't watched a video ad
 but I'm planing to add more virtual currency to user.

Is this ok ?

thank you

Re: [android-developers] How to send reference object to a fragment in android studio

2015-12-04 Thread Mark Phillips
As an alternative, why not store the ArrayList in the Application
object, and have getArrayList and setArrayList methods.
The Fragment can access the ArrayList and update
ArrayList with these methods. Since the Application object is a
singelton, there will only be one valid copy of ArrayList.

Re: [android-developers] Is this list dying?

2015-10-24 Thread Mark Phillips
Well, I got a response to my bug report (
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=191384). I asked that
the link to android-developers forum be removed and a link to Stack
Overflow added. Here is the first comment so far.

"Because StackOverFlow is Not a , And If a new Developper
Didn'nt Notice by himself/herself that StackOverFlow Then this
person should Not Developp, This also can be interpreted as a
So don't Modify it"

I guess I should consider myself spanked for the temerity of questioning
the conscience of the king.

I agree with Kris that the responses on Stack Overflow can be less than
optimal, and it takes a fair amount of effort to wade through the chaff to
find the wheat. I think the volume on Stack Overflow is caused more by (a)
changing nature of the Android API (b) increasing numbers of new Android
developers (
http://blog.appfigures.com/app-stores-growth-accelerates-in-2014/).

It seems the five of us have done our bit this week to keep the
android-developers forum alive!

TreKing - thanks for the clarification!

Someone at Google should update https://developer.android.com/support.html
and remove the link to this group if they really want to kill it.

I submitted a bug report -

Re: [android-developers] Is this list dying?

2015-10-23 Thread Mark Phillips
I have the same observation. However, I don't know where everyone went!

I recently posted to stack overflow and received more and faster responses
(ie no responses from this list). When I google for an android issue, I get
lots of stack overflow response.

Maybe stack-overflow is better.

[android-developers] Which Camera API to use?

2015-10-20 Thread Mark Phillips
I am developing a new app, and I want to support all the way back to Jelly
Bean/Ice Cream Sandwich. I need to use the video camera in my app - just to
shoot some 15 second footage and no processing.

Do I have to write two camera Activities, one with the camera api and the
other with the camera2 api, and somehow pick one based on the api level of
the device?

Or, should I just use the camera api?

Which camera api would you use if you were developing a new camera based
app today?

Thanks!

Re: [android-developers] How to create a public static class

2015-09-22 Thread Mark Phillips
Java does not allow top level static classes, just inner static classes.
You can create something like a static class as follows:

1. define the class as final
2. make the constructor private
3. make all the members and methods in the class static

Take a look at the java.lang.Math class for an example.

Re: [android-developers] Re: GPS Background Service Stops Receiving Updates

2014-11-24 Thread Mark Phillips
On my Samsung Galaxy 4 phone from T-Mobile, I can hold down the home button
and get a list of running apps. I can kill each one individually with a
swipe, and there is a trashcan icon at the bottom of the screen that will
kill all the apps running. I use this feature to extend my battery time
when the batter is getting low. It may be a special Samsung app that does
this.

Re: [android-developers] Physical address is required for paid apps or in-app purchases

2014-09-19 Thread Mark Phillips
Dallas,

I completely agree.

The only reason I can think they want this information is for Homeland
Security or something related. When one rents a box at MBE or the PO, one
has to show valid id like driver's license or passport or something with a
photo. If you app incites riots or takes over an airplane and holds the
passengers for ransom, then they know where you live and how to find you.
It can't be to send you a monthly check.....;)

The PO Box I meant has a physical address. For example, Mailboxes Etc and
many other similar places offer a real street address and suite number. No
different than any other business address. I did not mean a box at the Post
Office. MBE charges about $13/month for the smallest personal box. There

I totally understand that this is an onerous pain-in-the*** hoop that we
have to jump through. Just one more reason to dislike Google. However, as I
have seen over the years on this list, it is VERY hard to argue with
Google, let alone find a way to start a discussion. So, I was just trying

[android-developers] Re: Implementing Google map in application

2014-08-19 Thread Mark Turkel
This may have something to do with the Map API key. I would re-generate
that and use your key in a separate program that you know already works. If
it fails, and the only thing you have changed is the key, then I would
assume that's your problem. If it works, then lets take a look at your

A more accurate approach would be to sample the GPS location on a
continuous basis. A button on the app could be used to start/stop the
sampling to save battery, or, better yet, dynamically change the sample
rate - decrease when the samples don't change and increase to a set maximum
when they do. I can envision driving from point A to point B on several
different routes, all of which are different distances. Just knowing the
end points would not be a very accurate way to measure the miles driven for
stuff like oil changes, tire rotation, tire wear, etc.

Re: [android-developers] New Android Development Tool..

2013-10-17 Thread Mark Phillips
I cannot answer for joe131, and I can't use his tool since it only runs on
Windows (I am a Linux/Android guy). However, I have been looking for a
non-Eclipse command line approach for android development. I use Eclipse on
my main system at my desk, but when I am on the road (I am a consultant) I
prefer to only carry my Android tablet. I have moved quite a few of my Java
and Python projects to the cloud and have been using the command line and
ssh to continue working while on the road. I would like to put my Android
projects in the cloud and work on them using my tablet and the command line
as well. There are a few google hits on command line android development,
so there are others, although most likely a small population. Just consider
us the lunatic fringe of Android development...we pose no threat, and
sometimes resistance is not futile....;)

Mark

P.S. And, yes I have looked at AIDE as another possible solution.

[android-developers] Cross-platform development question

2013-06-21 Thread Mark Turkel
Hi all,

This is an interesting question, but a bit of background first...my company
has been developing software for almost 30 years now. We have always been
a .net house, but now we're creating Android and iOS apps as well. I don't
want to have to write business logic and database access logic for each
different platform, and since we're doing cloud apps, we should be able to
call web services to get and put data into the database.

We have been using Entity Framework to communicate with SQL Server for our
databases, and, as of late, we have been creating Single Page Applications
using Breeze and Knockout.

We have created RESTful services using the WebAPI, but in working with
Breeze, we like how it calls an IQueryable object. My goal is to
write-once, and be able to re-use for the mobile development.

LINQ really makes things easier in that we don't have to have a specific
API call for each entity, but I haven't found the right library, or I'm not
using the right keywords for Google to search...I dunno, but all I'm
finding are LINQ libraries that work on data already in memory. That means
I will have to bring LOTS of data to the mobile device just to work with
it, and that's time-consuming and also will quickly eat up storage
space...and why should I do that, when I have a powerful SQL Server that
can get me only the data I need.

An example:

Just about every application starts out showing a list of reecords on a
grid. (It would require a query that returns an ID, and one or more
descriptive fields (like first and last name).) So we know we can create a
RESTful API called "getCustomers()" and it would return the list for us to
populate the grid. Upon selection of an item, we would then want to make
another call to the database to populate a detail screen. We could create
another RESTful API called getCustomer(id), for example, and it should
return the fields that we need to populate the screen.

OR we could use the Entity Framework to create a Customers() object, and
use LINQ to get what we want from it, just by modifying the calling
URLwhich is easy, fun, and cool in the .net environment, and would
satisfy my requirements of using the same business code for all platforms.

So here's the question:

How do you make a call to a RESTful service that returns an iQueryable
object from Android (Java)? Is there a Breeze-type of library for Android?
 What is the best way to do this - create specific RESTful APIs, or is
there a way to use this business layer we have already created that's
living on the server?

Then you did it wrong. Layouts should be density-independent. The
layout of an Xperia Z (xxhdpi) should be the same as a Galaxy Nexus
(xhdpi), which should be the same as a Nexus S (hdpi), etc., as they
are all the same basic screen size, within fractions of an inch.

Screen size != screen density. In fact, there is no correlation between the two.

I'm no low-level WiFi expert, but if WiFi were powered down, I would
expect precisely zero of these packets. Are you sure nothing in your
app is closing the socket? Say, courtesy of an onPause() or onStop()

It is the only way to distribute a shared library. The recipe that
skink is having you follow is fine if you have one device (or
emulator), which you can root and change.

Read skink's messages. Then ask yourself how you plan on forcing
everyone who uses your apps to follow skink's recipe.

Re: [android-developers] How to solve the issue with Dalvik compiler limitation on 64K methods?

2013-03-22 Thread Mark Murphy
I presume that there's a recipe for that, though I do not know what it is.

The right answer to your problem ("the application architecture should
probably be restructured") is one you discarded. Any "solution to work
around this problem temporarily" may come with side effects, such as
having to drop "debug/run builds within the IDE" "temporarily".
Software development does not require an IDE or debug builds.

Re: [android-developers] Re: How to display Options Menu Vertically

You do not control the layout of the options menu/overflow menu.
Whether it is "horizontal" (I presume referring to the old-style
options menu) or not is up to the framework and will be dependent on
the OS version you are running on. Please allow the menu to render the
same for your app as it does for all other apps on the device, so the
user knows what to expect.

That is because you changed your build target. Leave your build target
where it was. Set your android:minSdkVersion to 10 in your manifest.
Lint (Eclipse or command line) will point out to you when you use
classes and methods that are available from the build target but
exceed your minSdkVersion.

And, since they don't seem to emphasize the point quite enough for my
taste: static data members are, by definition, memory leaks. How *bad*
of a memory leak they are depends on what they are and how they are
used.

Like many programming techniques, singletons can be used as a scalpel

most people reading that advice are inexperienced and are likely to do
damage with either a scalpel or a sledgehammer.

On the whole, AFAICT, tolerance for singletons decreases with
increased production Java development experience, based on the
conversations that I have had on the topic over the past few years.

Your scenario doesn't necessarily prove this claim.

Dalvik's garbage collector is a non-compacting garbage collector.
Hence, you can fragment your heap space, whereby while you have lots
of free heap, but there is no contiguous block big enough to satisfy a
particular request.

Your "loop that allocate a whole boat load of memory" is fragmenting
your heap space.

The only way that your scenario would prove your claim is if your
individual allocations in the "whole boat load of memory" are larger
than the request that then fails.

Only if you built your own edition of Android.

It is entirely possible to have an NFC tag point to a URL that, in
turn, points to an APK file. At best, all this will do is download the
file. The user will still have to manually indicate that they want to
install it, manually go through the installation steps, and manually
start the app once installed.

There is nothing in the Android SDK for this, at least at the present time.

No. In Java, we refer to it as Intent.ACTION_BOOT_COMPLETED. The
string value associated with that public static final data member is
"android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED".

That's not to say that the manifest has no other issues. For example,
the ALTERNATIVE stuff is downright bizarre.

You do not hold the RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED permission. Instead, you
are trying to hold the RECEVIE_BOOT_COMPLETED permission, which does
not exist.
