Hi Guys, Apologies for the off-topic stuff. Just thought I'd share my "finally breathe easy" moment with everyone here. For years, I was nagged by where Viju Shah has copied the tune for Gupt's title music. Yes, half of it was Deep Forest, but the other half, the parts that are not Deep Forest, really was eating me up!! Finally, I was able to place the tune and find it too. It is from the first album by Mike Oldfield, called Tubular Bells, which came out in 1973. It was the intro of this album, which only had 2 songs, Tubular Bells Part 1 and Tubular Bells Part 2, that the music is copied from. This is the same music that opens the song "Mushkil Bada Yeh Pyar Hai" in Gupt. Very nice tune. By the way, I'd recommend Mike Oldfield's "Songs From Distant Earth" to anyone who likes Enigma. Hi Pals, I truly agree with Ranojoy ( [EMAIL PROTECTED]) that the state of affairs as regards the discussions in the group has reduced to inane commentscalling him god and things i mean we all know that he leads the march past but hey even he would not be comfortable with adjectives ( i cant call it a complement !!! ) like "God" attributed to him. What worries me no end, is grossly over used subjects like 10 best Rahman songs where do we go after this Rahmans 10 best photographs or Rahmans 10 best interviews ??? I guess a fan group like this is establishesd for the purpose of discussing the elements of the greatness of the artist it is dedicated to and to help more and more people appreciate the goodness and artistic richness of that artiste. This , here , could be done by discussing interludes & intros Composed by Boss, their orchestration and sonic accuracy from which emnates a visual imagery as clear,beautiful and as lingeringly fragrant as the the first summer rain on the dry dusty pavement. People in the group find out endless ways of downloading his music (which is apparent by endless requests for uploading !!! ) and not bein concerned about the piracy aspect of the music of someone they call ''GOD" and also the lack of quality of those mp3s. So in an earnest request againt piracy of BOSSs music i urge fellow group members to up load just-about-audible-quality bits of his songs for people to sample and finally buy the audo CD (and i promise they wont regret it !!! ). Lets make the group a really ejoyable place to be in so that more and more people participate in interesting discussions , not give comments like this song is a flop- 4/10 ! and let us also not copy and paste on the group forum some of the most ametuerish reviews of BOSSs music(u call them reviews ??? hahaha ). Well said Prashanth, I really appreciate it. Even iam an silent admirer of this group. i don`t think about writing which is unwanted in this group. I was a great fan of Ilaya on those period and later inspired heavily by the Music of Rehman. nobody can deny that starting from MSV, the latest MD`s also included in the list. It does`n mean that we have to criticise them. If we stop listening to the lifted tunes, then we cannot hear any of the songs of Indian Music. Every one will agree that the improvement on the Intruments and Sounds had taken Indian Music to world level because of the Arrival of Rehman. He has Invented and Delivered a New trend where the others started following it. Now we are listening to the Latest Technology Music all becasue of him. earlier , even the stero mode arrived very late after every one recived it . I mean even the bollywood. 50th Filmfare Awards, 2005 Best Background Score A.R.Rahman, Swades The background score for Swades could not be the usual kind that merely underlines scenes because if it went by the standard forumla, the integrity of the film would have been lost. For this film, the background score had to be part of the story telling. At certain times it needed to be loud, at certain times it had to speed up the story. I had a vision for the film, Ashutosh Gowariker too had a vision, and we both sat down and combined our visions for the score. We experimented a bit so it went back and forth - you try something, you mix it, then you come back, mix it agains. Take the scene in the train in which Shah Rukh Khan sees the young boy selling water. It is, I think, the most important scene in the movie and it's also the one that most people say made them cry. We discussed many options here , among which the main two were to have Yeh Jo Des or Yeh Tara in the background. We finally chose Yeh Tara. My favourite scene in the movie , though is the one where the projector comes to a halt and Shah Rukh explains all about the stars and constellations in the sky. As for the songs, the first positive reactions were to Yeh tara, then was Yeh jo des hai mera and then three months later, it was Sanwaria Sanwaria! One song, Ahista Ahista was dropped but I have absolutely no problems with that. In fact, when I saw the film, i felt it had to be shortened. I told Ashutosh, do whatever it takes, but shorten the film. He called me a few days later and said, there are some scenes that have to go and with them the song will go too. I told him to go ahead and do whatever was good for the film. You can't think in terms of a song or a scene, you have to think of the integrity of the film. This is my 17th Filmfare Award and I'm thankful for the support I've received from Filmfare, the jury and my fans. And to the Divine Creator, from where all my music comes. Filmfare, April 2005. Shobha Warrier in Chennai No one can think of Lagaan without its sound. All the dialogues of the film were recorded on location in Bhuj, Gujarat. It was mixed at the Media Artists' DTS Studio in Chennai. Rated one of the best DTS studios in India, some the country's cream films are recorded here. Lagaan is one such, the post- production work of which was done at the Media Artists' Lab in Chennai. H Sridhar of Media Artists is the sound engineer who recorded the music of Lagaan, as well as mixed the sound of the film. He is also the person who recorded all of A R Rahman's songs. As Lagaan awaits it fate at the 74th Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles, Sridhar talks about his experience as a member of the Lagaan team. When did your association with Lagaan begin? I met [director] Ashutosh [Gowariker] when he discussed the project with [composer] A R Rahman. I had no clue at all about the story when we started recording the songs. Obviously Rahman might have known the story but I didnt ask him. The lyrics were in Avadhi language. So, we needed Javedsaab's [lyricist Javed Akhtar] inputs while recording as the pronunciation had to be correct. The singers had to say mori instead of meri, instead of nahin, they had to say naahi [No], etc. You have recorded all of Rahman's songs. Did you expect the songs of Lagaan to be such a big hit while recording? Rahman always surprises me. I knew the songs would be well received but not to this extent. They had the folk flavor yet were modern. For example, I feel Mitwa is contemporary yet 100 years old. All the songs had a meditative quality about them. That is the amazing aspect of the songs of Lagaan. Another surprising aspect was the use of voices. A song like Ghanan ghanan has five male voices singing a line each. Rahman used the right instruments at the right place. The tonal quality of the songs reflect the period, yet they please the young audience. I am sure he had that in mind when he composed those songs. After long gap, Rahman sang Chale chalo -- it couldnt have been sung by anybody else. Another important aspect is, you just cant separate the visual images of the songs from the audio. When we did the songs, all of them sounded very good but when we put them on the visuals, the effect was a hundred per cent more. That was one of the reasons why the sales of the cassettes jumped after the video was released. <> I would say Lagaan would triumph as one of his best albums, and one of our best works, too. When did you get to see the film and start mixing the sound? Ashutosh and Aamir were here with the complete film some time in December 2000 and they were at a hotel close to Rahman's studio. Rahman also composed the background score of the film. Ashutosh was travelling with his editing machine. They would edit during the day. And at night, they were with us at Rahman's studio. I was amazed to see Ashutosh putting in around 22 hours of work every day. This is after a gruelling eight months of shooting in Bhuj. At the time, I only got to see some portions of the film, mainly the songs. When Ashutosh wanted only me to mix the film here at Media Artists, I said I want to see the film. Aamir was also insistent that I do the mixing because I had done his film Rangeela here, which he loved. I told him I wanted to see the film on the big screen. Not on the computer screen. So Ashutosh brought the film from Mumbai and we had a preview. Rahman, Ballu Saluja, the editor, Ashutosh, Aamir and I saw the film together. The film was up to the point the cricket team was formed. I did not see the cricket match. It was already 2 hours 40 minutes long! Then Ashutosh told me there were four more reels to come! What was your reaction? Well, I had done films like Pukar which was three hours minutes and China Gate which was 3 hours 20 minutes .. and, I know they were a little bit of a strain on the audience to watch. But Ashuthosh was so confident and focused. I was blown by what I saw of the film. Everything looked so perfect. I felt the sound also had to be perfect. Sound designer Nakul came here. Nakul also did the location sound recording with some very good machines and the dialogues were of excellent quality. Aamir didnt want to hurry up anything. He used to say, lets not tire ourselves. Lets make the correct decisions at the correct time of the day. Lets not make decisions at 3 in the morning when we are tired, and repent later. He wanted everything to be perfect. I give in that the song is historically important, and the original tune had to be retained for authenticity. But, technically, it is still an outright copy.
