Hi all, Yesterday night I heard on Radio Mirchi that it will play 5 songs of Mangal Pandey "tomorrow night", so possibly after 8 today, we could listen to those 5 songs. i am a damn fan of rahman n live in dubai. Hi everyone, I'm working in Software Engineering company in Kluang Johor and we are developing software for garment factory, so i always go to the garment factory to see the network and solve customer side problem. Yesterday i was in Batu Pahat garment factory i saw t-shirt and i saw it is our magical man A.R.Rahman face at the t-shirt i was so suprise and i talk to the manager who order the t-shirt and he gave me the contact number of the person. He is one of my co-worker, his name is faizal a malay guy and he is a local rock musician. He is doing the t-shirt for his band with our guru face.So i ask him how much the price for one t-shirt, he said RM27 and he got 3 design of shirt and i bought 2 t-shirt with him.So nice one in black and one in white colour.Then suddenly i remember u all talking about shirt and i ask him can u give me the block or sample picture so i can forward to my friends at arrahman group then he said can no problem. So i think may be u all can buy from him. He said he can design whatever style. I will send u all the sample shirt i bought to you in or 2 days or so if anyone want to buy may be can order then i can post via dhl or fedex to ur home. I send u all the sample. And the way you used the word "guarantee" - however bad the music be, no fan will criticise his idol like that. And if the music was that bad, why didnt Aamir Khan change the composer for the movie which was over an year in production? And finally, I cant believe a person in Dubai got the CD while not even one in India managed to get it. All these points sum up to a situation where one can doubt your review's authenticity. I heard 3 songs on Radio Mirchi today...Here r my 1st impressions Loved the qawwali type song "Maula"...Its haunting...ARR at his best again...I think when it comes to composing "GOD"ly songs, ARR gives his 200%...He himself sings it with Khan brothers I think, who sang the Noor-un-ala song... 2nd song I listened, the one with Kavita K, which is good but not very good...Its a classical stuff...tablas & sarangi...but I didnt felt the A R R magic in it...tune is very ordinary I feel... 3rd song which Richa Sharma sang is quiet good with A R R touch in it...very diff kind of rhythm...enjoyed it... We should not be disappointed with ARR choosing to do a particular style of movies. I believe his best work comes out when he composes for a purpose he respects and enjoys working for. Whether he does period movies, commercial film, broadway musical, or personal album, all that matters to me is the talent that goes into each work. In the past he period movies has brought out some fantastic tunes. I'd be wary of jurging his compositions too early; it often takes a while to understand. hi guys, i havent finished listening to the full album yet, but because some people r eagerly waiting as i was waiting until now before i could hear. guys its really worth waiting thats what i think. the songs which i heard so far: mangala mangala ... this is just mind blowing in all sections, music, orchestra, lyrics, singer vocals. i just simply cant explain how i felt after listening to this. next i heard holy holy, great orchestra grt selection of singers, fast paced, very gud orchestra. takey takey, after i listened it for the first time i think the situation may be bit tough to compose even though our boss suceeded in composing a gud tune. mangala mangala sad tune, again grt tune, simple music grt voices. after listening to this album what i can say is rahman knows the mood, he knows how to make a period album to be heard by all classes. i can bet that this album is going to be a grt sucesss. its just the movie which will add its grt sales. please please please listen to the music in the best equipment u have. orchestra is simply grt, i cant express my happinesss in words after listening to this album so far. hail rehman i bow to u bosss ur simply grt Explore, Experience, Enjoy A.R.Rahman - The Man, The Music, The Magic. Its quite apparent that you have no taste for music. And for those people reading this response..let this be the final word on it.a man puts in months of his time to make something and people dismiss it in moments..quite a shame, especially coming from a fan (I doubt it, whether you are one), constructive criticism is welcomed, that which is detailed.and guarantees dont work in this industry. As I told Rahman bhaiya once...I hate critics, who dont know tha abc of music, criticising someone else's work, that to, through one liners...absolutely unfair..it gets on my nerves these days. Cant we just enjoy whats their and try and appreciate what and how can one man make such brilliant 'original' compositions, that also from scratch.sorry Gops, Vij and Rano for my outburst, but its like people like Adnan are hell bent on ARR making bland, nonesensical music, what they fail to see is, these soundtracks will live through the test of time.and not the crap that mainstream music in India dishes out everyday.. Hi all, Its unbelievable!!! In a small town of Kannur in Kerala the Rising CDs & cassettes is available. Why u people r quarrelling I dont know. I bought the cd today. It got released today. The CD costs Rs. 145. Its by Yash Raj music. Mind-blowing songs. Thats the right word. Long time since he has composed this type of songs. I have completed three times of hearing (Im listening to it now also while Im typing). At first u will like "holi" song(like the Ghanan song- Lagaan: in that it was rain in this holi thats the difference) then u will tempted by our boss song a religous piece like the one in Bose then its "mai vari vari". All songs have got totally different moods which our boss havent worked with (eg:"holi" song, "mai vari vari" song). It will be only getting into you very slowly after repeated hearings as its a periodic film & its not like lagan. The songs are purely situational. Only with visuals the songs beauty could be magnificent. He has reused so many loops & beats (eg: the Nayak Sayyan song, Saathiya Songs(arr&sadhna songs, 1947 Earth Song, Daud beat, Kaadalar Dinam-Dandiya song etc etc.). In the singing section all has done their part well especially our boss. The song is so tough that our boss could only do justice to it. For recording its 10/10. All in all a beautiful album. Please this is the last word. No arguments Please. U will love this one for sure. hi, 'The Rising' audio launch was shown live for a few minutes on Headlines today around 8:25 pm.Everyone including A R Rahman was present.How come no one in this gp was able to get info on this function, i was able to hear Aamir fans screaming 'Aamir Aamir'. [arr] rising/mangal pandey music is horribly dissapointing
Well, take my word. I heard mangal pandey's music, and it is 100% percent boring and disappointing from our music god arrahman, I mean what is he doing repeating some of his old music instruments like in 1.holire- he has used the drum beats of dhandiya from kaadalar dinam and daud. And in 2. takke takke (the most expected song) the song starts with saiyyan song instrument from the movie nayak. At least try to give some fresh music to at least quality actors and foremost actors like aamir khan. At one stage when I was listening the 5th or 6th song I felt if I`m really listening to mangal pandey, or am I dreamin. So diasapointing, I have always praised arrahman and never criticized arr's music at any stage in my life mind you, but this is the first time I'm Really criticizing arr and his music. For a while I thought this was my luckiest day when I saw that mangal pandey was available for online listening, then 45 minutes later I felt as it was my worst day listening to one of arr's worst albums which I expected to be the best. This guy may be speaking the truth as far as availability is concerned because I checked with Musicland in Dubai and they said the cassette is out (CD only by Saturday) but I cannot believe him passing judgments and guaranteeing that it will be a flop as if he is controlling the sales of the album. I am very happy if his music is a megahit but even if it is not atleast lets be happy that our grandchildren will still be listening to it. As for as the rating is concerned that you have so generously given, I can say that the title song itself will fetch a rating of 8+ for the album. I have yet to internalize other songs. And there are three versions of it in the album, making it the longest song of ARR. Any way, now that you have realized that ARR's music is not your cup of tea, maybe you can resume hearing Anu Maliks and Nadeem Shrawans. Just leave us fans in peace. [arr] Rising on Raaga
Hi all -
I listened to Rising songs on Raaga.com today. After brilliant songs
in Bose, "Rising" is certainly a disappointment. Overall, the songs
sound like "Meenaxi" and it seems to me that Rahman probably composed
Rising soon after Meenaxi, since you can see the similarities in the
orchestral arrangements.
Then again, I've only listened to the songs twice .. so there's a
chance that the songs will grow on me. So far, Al Madduth Maula is the
one song that has stuck ... the others are below-par.
Here's my review :
1. Mangal Mangal
Good song. Kailash Kher's rustic voice lends a lot of authenticity to
the song. Some of the formations later in the song remind me a bit of
"Des Mere" from Bhagat Singh.
2. Mai Vari
Very ordinary song. This is a classical song sung by Kavitha
Krishnamurthy, and her voice sounds old. Someone else could have been
used. It is probably a courtesan song however the ("thumhari adao pein
mai vari" chorus in the background sounds out of place and modern).
Reminds me of many other Rahman songs from old including Kangalal
Kaithu Sei (Anarkali) and Bombay (Kehna hi kya). The song doesn't have
the right feel to it ...
3. Holi Re
Very ordinary. Doesnt sound Rahman quality.
4. Rasiya
Good song. Sounds like a drunken song ... Richa Sharma's voice suits
the song well. The lilting music in the background is beautiful, as is
the strings.
5. Takey Takey
Ordinary song. This song has a confusing start and the melody doesn't
hold ... Kailash Kher's voice which sounds good in Mangal Mangal
sounds annoying. Reminds me of certain lines in Dil Se (Satrangi Re) ...
6. Al Maddath Maula
Great song. Rahman has gotten into a habit of adding an Islamic song
to many of the movies he makes. And he does it brilliantly (although
not as brilliant as "Zikr" from Bose or "Noor Ul" from Meenaxi). This
has got to be the best song in the album. The tune is VERY refreshing
and new, especially the line "Hai mera maula ... " brilliant. Reminds
me a little bit of "Haji Ali" but that is to be expected.

[arr] The Rising - is Rising in me slowly but surely....
Guyz and gals, Finally we get to hear all the songs. i'm sure there wud b lotta questions in everyone's lips. Like ..is it gonna b the blockbuster music of this yr ? Is it gonna sweep all awards ? Is it better than Lagaan ? Is it more patriotic than ARR's previous ? Is it one of ARR's best works till date? Is it experimental music ?? and so onThough its pretty too early for one to judge and answer all questions, atleast after first few hearings I can say few things. Almost all songs are situational songs and hence wud depend a lot on the picturisation in the movie. If the movie bombs the music might be forgotten which I pray shudnt and I hope wudnt. Please don't compare this album to Lagaan. Totally different music. I guess Lagaan had more patriotic feel in its songs than here. Actually apart from mangal mangal I don't hear anything patriotic in any other songs. Which ARR album is not experimental?? He comes up with something experimental in all his albums. And this album doesnt fall short of it. Takey Takey is such a different song. First time I'm sure people would forward it, but this song would grow on u slowly...coming to all the songs - Personally for me Main vari vari is the best...it has a very sweet tune. Its very catchy as some pundits would call. It should be the one in which Rani mukherjee dances and Aamir khan admires her drinking boose in a kota ( jus my imagination guyz )...very good song...has potential of being a chartbuster. holi re falls short of wat i thought it should be. i wanted it to be like the anthem for holi festival, but its rather like another dhandiya song. its still a wonderful song. infact one of the fun songs of the album..i enjoyed this song...udit as usual rocks in this. i dunno y he used daud and dil hi dil mein(kadhalar dhinam) beats :( then comes rasiyasuperb experimental song. i dunno whether chartbuster or not, but its sure a treat for ARR fans. It looks like a song where everyone are drunk and are dancing around. has got shades from meenaxi song "badhan dhuan dhuan" and two instrumentals in the same. watch out for the tune and the feel during the line "bigadi banat banat ban gayi gudiya manat manat man gayi" ...totally mesmerising... now coming to takey takey ...i dunno how to describe this song..its very situational song. shud be one in which some kinda market is shown and wats in the market is being explained. Listen it for urself and u'll feel the same like how i'm feeling. shud be a treat to watch in the movie. Al maddath maula is another song like Zikr in Bose. Has a lot of life in it. Reminds me of one song in saathiya "mera yaar milaade". But nevertheless its a beauty on its own. Nobody can get so much life into songs like how ARR does. Mangal Mangal ...good song to start an album...should be awesome while watching movie. Kailash Kher sings this song with passion. The only patriotic song in this album guyz. its one of the good songs of this album. Keeps repeating in agni and aatma versions. aatma is a slower version but picks up in the end. Overall an album which is sure to grow in you. There is no duet song like "o re chori" or "dekho na". first impression is that the album is extraordinary. it's very westernized for the nature of the movie but the ambience exactly fits anyhow! takey takey has overtones of oh darling yeh hai india I guess.. Main vari vari.. the main tune is based on very western chord progressions and a r changes melodies in ways not done in classical indian styles. chords are too good.. rasiya.. the main chorus is astounding.. again the backing chords and sound texture is amazing.. santoors in the background I guess.. saarangis, all sound great.. al maddath maula.. got to hear this first ;) excellent again.. murtaza and qadir perform as usual.. the lines i mentioned before and the few following lines are great. lots of strings.. overall the album is a lot more HAPPY than I would have expected. upbeat, uptempo.. but the songs are catchy.. mangal mangal is an excellent song as well.. i personally like the sound and the ambience of the album.. i would put the sound as lucknowi or north indian traditional.. rasiya chorus.. only a r r can do this I guess. happy listening.. In this album, his voice has come to very tolerable range that will make one hear it again and again. In mangal mangal, at some places it seems as if ARR's has used the style of aalhaa-uudal folktales of Bundelkhand region (jhansi area). It was used bappi lahiri in "aisaa tiir chalaa mere dil par jisakii piir sahii na jaaye" song of Dalaal. I feel that this album surpasses Bose in the sense that the songs of Bose, however good, could not bring the spirit of rebellion, fight, on-the-move. But mangal-mangal is all in one song. The great part is that mangal mangal can't be said openly patriotic like TLOBS songs or Bose songs. It is like vandemataram songs which had the spirit of freedom and patriotism. I am sure that it is going to become very very popular. Open patriotism switches off some people. I have yet to identify the differences in the three versions of mangal mangal. But I am sure that that will enhance the beauty of this album. 2. This is the album in which ARR has taken care of chronology. I am not any master in identifying styles and instruments prevelant in any era, but Rising gives a clearcut feel that ARR has come up with some old style. I mean to say that the songs do sound 1857-ish, unlike Kisna songs which were no 1947-ish at all. 3. on first few hearings, main vari vari reminds of chilaman uthegii nahiin of Kisna. The song sounds odd among the other songs of the album. Maybe someone insisted on keeping a dance no. somewhere to relax people. 4. Holi song is also good folk music. But I feel that the freshness of Udit Narayan's voice kills the 1857-ish feel of the song. I feel that ARR should stop using Udit Narayan (irrespective of today's national award) and Kavitha Krishnamurthy. The voice of these two are so typical that they snatch attention of the listeners away from music towards the voice. 5. The mood of Rasiya does not become clear in first few hearings. The song sounds of "separation" but the voices is not able to convey the pathos. But if it is taunting, cajoling, chhedh-chhaadh song, then too, the feeling is not becoming apparant. Somewhere the singers do oh-aah-oomph like Ila Irun which sounds a tad out of place, on the verge of being cheap. 6. Could not get the mood of Takey Takey. They seem to be talking about some market place, unless there is some metaphor in it. The Chorus sounds overly muted in it. Seems to be filler song. 7. Al Maddath maula is a confused song. ARR seems to be doing too many devotional songs, thus these sound repetitive. This song is not able to raise any clear cut feeling, of devotion, of submission, of worry, of anxiety, or helplessness. It has all in a khichadi manner. And after the halfway, it grows in loudness to become irritating. Meenakshi's noor-un-allaah was far better, Bose's zikr was far far better. Vandemataram's songs were far better. The directors might be using these songs to pull muslim crowds to theatres and to music. These are like all those dargah's songs of Manmohan Desai's films. But, muslim listeners will sure like this song. Thus the purpose of keeping this song gets fulfilled. It is sad that ARR is only in this song. - Javed's lyrics seem to be excellent. His choice of words is very good and powerful. I am getting the feeling that the folk beats of this album are going to extremely popular and it is going to break the records of Taal. Touchwood. For that matter, I am from U.P. (Lucknow) thus the music is tailor made for my liking. I don't know how non-hindi speaking people are going to find it. HIii guyz, Mangal pandey rocks. Rahman is "oops am sorry am running outa words. Mangal mangal song is really cool. wat else can i say abt this song. Rasiya is awesome gr8 mixing, simple sounds but v.intricate. V well sung . My favo song for the moment. Holi re is a gr8 song. Its not one of the stereotyped holi songs. Its not the same old screamin holi song. Its a v enjoyabl song.Jus like ghanan ghanan. Takey takey is wat movi needs. Al madath song oops. I hear nthn but dis is mangal pandey and am rahman. Guys listen to it. It has rahmans stamp , almost fr evry second am not overrating. Belv me its haunting.Esp the mangal song. Beat structure is so refrshng. He has proved yet again that he is still creatively alive he is best you know with two back to back albums like Bose and Rising he has discovered some new horizons of music in Indian cinema He is on journey Friends you know if any one of you have given a glimpse to history, you would come to know that with every genius it is once happened that he moved ahead of his time and same is happening here he is now in a mature phase and if you look at his last two albums as I mentioned, the Bose and Rising its technically and in content so enrich that you cant expect from any one in India with every assignment he is going further which shows that he is creatively alive Chart buster music or best selling this is some thing else Dont compare his work on that basis you know some time albums like, I dont want to mention, recently are chart busters they are so cheap and inferior that I have no words to say about that Listen if some extra ordinary piece of work by ARR is appreciated by masses, then its pretty cool but if it doesnt get that popularity as it deserved than its not the fault of ARR but of his age which doesnt understand that he is surely ahead of his time and if you are a real music lover you will se Meenaxi, Swades, the Bose and now the Rising its some thing un match able really these are ahead of his time I am sure his work will be studied again and again in near future this is not some thing to die its history mark my words.. Well,wellan album from ARR which beein expected by ALL the ARR fans...but as for me...i didnt give much attention on it as im more excited on Ah Aah & Godfatherso my expectation on RISING wasnt high...so i manage to listen to it online.well well,many saying its horrible...i duno y u guys come up with lines like that...i think the album is good..knowing its a historical subject,u cant expect people to run around dancing for Rang De or singging duet song like Hum hai iss phal yaahaan..come on...just watch..the songs will suit the movie allot!!...but def the songs aint as powerful as Lagaan,which it manage to pull my atraction on the 1st hearing...lets see how it turns up...see u guysRISING = will rise on u slowly...GIVE IT TIME!! I think it was our mistake to expect too much. Ketan Mehta is a director whose movies never had good music. Dear friend, First get a original copy of CD or atleast cassette and listen to it in a good system.U have heard the songs online and the quality of songs is not that good.Remember u r listening to Rahmans music and u will not even understand wat instruments he has used if u dont listen in a good system.And finally dont jump into conclusions that too aftter jus hearing it online...Remember some 7000 of us are listening to ur comments...To be frank i too felt the same way when i first heard the songs..But the fact was that i din get any idea about the songs on first listening..After listening to it for some 5 times already i feel the songs are definitely going to make it big... I had the same feeling when i heard Rhythm,Alaipayuthey,and for that matter most of his albumsListen to it for Some 5 to 10 times without any preconcieved notions and then get back if u still didnt like the songs...Which i m sure u wont even if u r Rahman basher... [arr] Rising impressions
Hi all, As always, first hearing was disappointing but the songs have grown on me since. There is still a tinge of disappointment about the use of instrumental pieces from his earlier songs (Mudhalvan, Kaadhalar Dhinam etc), but overall the album is pretty good. Maybe not "hit" material, but very classy... Anyway, not many authentic period scores catch the fancy of general junta, so I guess we'll have to live with it... All of his period albums have been absolutely great and yet only Lagaan became popular ( I personally rank 1947 Earth and TLOBS above Lagaan). I hope The Rising breaks the trend but I am afraid it might not. Khair... the songs... this is not really a review.. just a few comments that come to my mind as I'm listening... 1/5/8) Mangal Mangal - 3 versions: Each of the versions is superb, though the first two don't sound very different from each other. And the third one (Aatma) starts slower but picks up the pace later on and sounds much like the earlier versions. I am not complaining though. Its a superb song! 3 is better than 1! :) 9/10 2) Main Vari Vari: Very well sung by Kavita and Reena. Basically a "mujra" song that grows on you. However, doesn't really break any new ground as far as mujra songs are concerned except the portions sung by Reena where the song really attains a little modern touch and sounds really different and interesting. 7.5/10 3) Holi Re: Starts with Aamir reciting a longish portion which is followed by a catchy tune sung by Udit and madhushree mainly, joined by Srinivas and Chinmayee... sounded very ordinary initially but now I think it can turn out to be "Radha Kaise Na Jale" type popular song if promoted well and if the movie manages to be a hit. Like I said the mukhda tune is pretty catchy.. My only problem is that it is a bit too garba-ish for a Holi song. 8/10 4) Rasiya: Not your typical Richa Sharma song. Very different (and MUCH better) than what I had expected. Introduces another great ARR discovery - Bonnie Chakraborty (at least I haven't seen her name anywhere before). Its very "intoxicating" if you know what I mean... the rhythm probably reminds one of "Badan Dhuaan Dhuaan" and yet the song is probably closer to "Rang Hai" in its effect. Amazing instrumentation - understated throughout and yet its amazing how good it sounds with the song. And the Chorus!! WOW!!!... Great Song!!! Will not be very popular among masses but I am sure it'll be a favorite with a LOT of people who'll end up buying the album. 9.5/10 6)Takey Takey: ammm... very weird song on first hearing.. in fact, it still sounds a bit weird after all these hearing... clearly the most situational song of the album... but going by the lyrics, it will probably have a very interesting picturization... Must say that the song won't have worked on me had it been sung by ANYONE other than Sukhwinder... As of now, sukhwinder's irrepressible singing makes it good for me... still waiting for it to grow though... 7.5/10 7) Al Maddath Maula: The Qawwali we've been waiting for. I must say, Zikr did not go down very well with me. I still don't like it. But this one is amazing! When ARR sings "maul maulaa maulaa ho" it is pure paradise!! I'd probably have liked less of "Al Maddath Maula" chanting that goes on in between the lines. The mukhda tune once again is very catchy.. something that draws you in from the first hearing itself... "ae mere daataa.. ae mere maulaa"... 8.75/10 (would've been 9 if I could somehow take the "Al Maddath Maula" out... ) So... there you go... a very good album overall.. Guys, Just heard the songs. I like Mangala mangala, mai vari vari, takey takey, holi re(disappoined that he used dauad and dhandiya beats for it thoguh) and rasiya in that order...They def have the 1857 feel to them and so will def take a while to grow on ppl especially if they r nor Rahmaniacs like us. [arr] Rising...Disappointing?
I'm very surprised at the disppointment! This is one of the few instantly likeable Rahman albums in a long time. Mangal Mangal, far from being about the man, is on auspiciousness as Rawat mentioned and that itself was a pleasant surprise. Main vari vari is the pick of the album, very catchy. You thought Darbar had milked the khotewali genre to the hilt in devdas...listen to this! But yes, Kavita sounds old. Every composer worth his name has a holi song to his credit. And now, even ARR does. And a very different holi song at that. Beats most other cliched holi songs like those in Waqt and Baaghbaan. The combination of tunes that flow without any pattern and the continuous use of rhythms make it very lively. I feel this would become a sure shot addition to holi fests. Rasiya and Al Maddath Maula didnt register initially. Al Maddath still hasnt, but Rasiya is pretty interesting. Though I really cannot place it in any particular situation yet. Takey takeythe lyrics are superb and very well sung too. Like Rawat mentioned...looks like an intro to a bazaar, why would anyone want an intro to a Bazaar...well Ketan Mehta better have a decent situation for it and not the regular 'the-lonely-khotewali-ventures-out-of-her-confines- for-the-first-time' or 'the-lonely-widow-ventures-out-of-her-confines- for-the-first-time'. I dont think ARR cares much about the period-authenticity and it really doesnt matter. In that sense, who'd vouch for Devdas's authenticity with regard to its music...just because you use hindustani classical it doesnt fit the period. Same thing about Kaalapani and IR's music or Parineeta and Moitra's music. The bottomline is about the music saleability and appropriateness within the script. Though there are no obviously modern sounds in Rising - in fact its seeped in folk music - there are very modern accompaniments in the orchestra that makes it very enjoyable for me! [arr] Mangal Pandey - First impression
Mangal Pandey seems like yet another classy album. All songs sound good, and the main thing that strikes is, ARR has been able to come up with some scintillating melodies, same time doing just to the period that the movie is set in. Kailash Kher rocks. Sureshot candidate for next year's awards. :-) One thing that I noticed was the using of a lot of previously used loops. Main Vari Vari had "Daud beats" and "Dandiya beats" Takey Takey has a bit of "Saiyyaan loop". Otherwise its a terrific work by Rahman. Mangal Pandey - The Rising By Joginder Tuteja, July 15th, 2005 - 1045 hrs IST A producer who believes in creating nothing BUT original A director, who brings alive a chapter from history NEVER told before on the silver screen A musician who is FAMED across the globe A lyricist who believes in delivering nothing BUT the best A distributor whose production house is the BUSIEST and MOST successful today. An actor who would be seen on BIG screen after 4 years. An actress who is at an enviable numero uno position this year And a movie that is touted to be the BIGGEST on this side of the millennium. Mangal Pandey - The Rising. One expects spectacular experience from the celluloid dream called 'Mangal Pandey - The Rising', a Bobby Bedi - Deepa Sahi production directed by Ketan Mehta and distributed by Yashraj Films. With Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Amisha Patel and Toby Stephens in the lead, 'Mangal Pandey - The Rising' has music by maestro A.R. Rehman and lyrics by Javed Akhtar saab. >From a movie produced at such a large scale, one expects nothing but a >grandeur musical score that would transcends all boundaries. Kailash Kher begins the album with the explosive title song 'Mangal Mangal' that is played while the title sequence is on. A song picturised on a group of four men atop an elephant while chanting the song across the 'galis' and 'mohallas', it is a lively track that brings alive India of the 19th century. For this short track, Kailash Kher goes completely rustic in approach and renders with full conviction. Get ready for the 'taalis' and 'seetis' in the auditoriums when this number heralds the beginning of an Aamir Khan movie after an endless wait for years. Kailash sings two more versions of this track - 'Agni' and 'Aatma'[with Sukhwinder Singh]. The rhythm and overall musical arrangements are still the same [with 'Aatma' being a slower version] but the lyrics are different. With the look of things one assumes that all these three versions would be picturised on the same set of men atop an elephant at different situations in the movie, hence taking the story forward. In the first ever 'mujra' of her career, Rani Mukherjee appears in 'Main Vari Vari', a highly rhythmic track that is easy on ears and extremely foot tapping. Set as a 'private mujra' for the Englishmen during their rule, it is sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Reena Bharadwaj. Kavita, who is heard lesser and lesser these years, is good yet again in this 'mujra' that is choreographed more as a mischievous track rather than a class appealing one, a la 'Umrao Jaan'. Tantalizing and inviting, this track brings to screen yet another facet of Rani Mukherjee! The opening music of 'Holi Re' appears to be an amalgamation of the base rhythm from the title songs of Rehman's own 'Daud' and Shankar Ehsaan Loy's 'Bunty Aur Babli'. Since the base color of the movie is 'yellow', the holi in this track too primarily revolves around the yellow color, unlike more traditional red and green. The song is picturised well but it doesn't appear to be of the kind that would add on to the list of most memorable holi tracks ever churned in Bollywood. Udit Narayan, Madhushree, Srinivas and Chinmaye sing the number with Aamir Khan too chipping in a little intermittently. An item song set in the 19th century! Well don't be surprised as this is what you get in 'Rasiya', a song of 'seduction, love and wait' choreographed as a 'banjara' song on two women who leave nothing to imagination. Richa Sharma and Bonnie Chakraborty render this medium paced number that also has passing shots of passion getting ignited between Toby Stephens and Amisha Patel while Rani Mukerjee is shown dancing and falling all out in love in her own private world. All this while Aamir Khan looks on the dance while letting his hair down and joining the proceedings towards the end. Surprisingly, it is one of the most lukewarm tracks ever by Rehman as it neither excites, nor titillates with the visuals too being just about passable. This world is a 'bazaar' where you have everything for a 'price'. This is the theme of the philosophical track 'Takey Takey', a brilliantly written song by Javed Akhtar saab that is sung with a punch by Sukhwinder Singh. There is an emphasis on the terms 'Takey Takey' throughout the song hence emphasizing on the fact that everything from friends to honesty to righteous virtues are available for just a 'taka'! Kailash Kher and Kartick Das Baul join in this rhythmic fast paced number set in the outdoors, but it is Sukhwinder who walks away with all the honors. A.R.Rehman, Kailash Kher, Murtaza and Kadir get together for 'Al Maddath Maula', a situational track set in a mosque. While the track is on, Aamir Khan along with some other characters are shown exchanging glances with each other as if preparing to execute a plan.
