[arr] Chennai concert - Shankar Mahadevan
Rahmaniacs, I got the news from some source that Shankar Mahadevan is going to sing in the Concert in Chennai... Hopefully this is true. Then, this would be a really different concert, compared to the recent one that we had with MARG. Chinmayee is practising Sahana Saral song from Sivaji is another info Anyone has any info on any other new singer, other than the ones who have been performing very recently... -- regards, Vithur Whatever God wants to give, no one can deny; Whatever God wants to deny, no one can give. Does this group get the highest number of enrollments soon after an ARR soundtrack or movie is released? How has enrollment rate varied over time? When was enrollment rate highest and lowest? When was dropout highest and lowest? Gopal, it would be amazing to get a graphical representation of this, but of course, only if you have time! Another statistic I was interested in is highest number of posts per month since this group's inception. The highest number of posts so far has been January of 2008 when JA released. The second highest posting period was during the RDB music and movie release from Dec 2005-Feb 2006. The third highest was in August of 2006 when JOK released. Of course, we have to keep in mind the total enrollment status during each month for these numbers to be more meaningful. I wonder who has the distinction of having the highest number of posts since this group started. Probably Gopal or Vijay, but I'm not too sure. Lastly, WE NEED TO HAVE ARR HIMSELF POST HERE AT LEAST ONCE! :)

Change is about moving forward On April 20, A R Rahman will perform at The Times of India Chennai Changing Notes Concert. As he shot a promo video for the concert, the mellifluous maestro told us why he loves Chennai, and what changes he'd like to see *Shalini Umachandran | TNN * AndrewLloyd Webber, among others, likes to call him the 'Mozart of Madras'. But A R Rahman defies definition. The prodigy who studied western classical at Trinity College of Music went on to redefine Bollywood scores. Having brought world sound to Indian cinema, he also put his version of contemporary Indian music — which blends techno, rap, latino, disco, reggae and ragas into a sumptuous potpourri — on the world map. He made Broadway swing to Bollywood Dreams, and composed stirring anthems for the stage version of The Lord of the Rings. Through it all, Rahman has constantly reinvented himself. But then, so has the city which will always be home to him. Simultaneously centre of culture and commerce, traditional and cosmopolitan, Chennai blends the old and new with the same effortlessness as Rahman. Maybe the controlled chaos of Chennai's constant flux has seeped into Rahman's soul, and is reflected in his dazzling ouvre — always fresh, never predictable. Like Chennai and its famous child, The Times of India too has always celebrated change. Like them, we too believe in staying in tune with changing times. That's why it made perfect sense for The Times of India to launch an edition in Chennai. And why Rahman is the perfect person to help us celebrate the city and our launch, with The Times of India Chennai Changing Notes concert on April 20. To be held at St George's school grounds, the concert (co-sponsors SAE, TVS Flame, United India Insurance, Olympia) is already creating a buzz, with TOI readers lining up to get passes for what promises to be a standing-room only blockbuster. Rahman has already composed music for a special Times of India promo, which he'll perform at the concert. A tip-off: there'll be many distinctively Chennai sounds in it, including waves breaking on the beach, an auto driver tooting a horn, a pujari with sunglasses revving up his bike, a boy beating out a tattoo on a kodam, a streetside vendor making egg parathas. But that will be then. Right now, we're waiting to interview Rahman as he shoots a video to promote the concert. Technicians drape a bright green monochrome cloth on a wall and set up lights, while a harried director calls out directions. A red and orange towel with a dolphin covers the camera, four electricians struggle to get the air-conditioning working, and assorted assistants drift around chatting on phones. Cans of film, umbrellas, a rack full of men's clothing and, bizarrely, a shower head lie scattered around the room. Apart from the view of a surprisingly green Chennai from the floor-to-ceiling glass windows on one side, there's nothing to distract from the fact that we're all in an immense, stuffy, grey space on the top floor of the Acropolis building on Radhakrishnan Salai. An hour later, the director decides to move the non-action upstairs — to the terrace of a 12-storey building at 3 in the afternoon. He gets his assistants to remove all the railings, set up a round trolley that looks like a giant's toy railway track and re-assemble the camera — this time without the dolphin towel. Back downstairs, the producer gets a phone call. He's crossing Gemini, she shouts. The make-up man who's been doing a good imitation of a meditating Buddha comes to life and shakes his assistant awake. They drag chairs across the floor to create a make-up table. The light boys do a quick check. The air-conditioner booms to life, as if it's been waiting for India's most famous contemporary musician too. Rahman walks in wearing a blue kurta over jeans, looking surprisingly schoolboylike, and greets the director with a cheery, I tried calling you, ya, to tell you I was late but you were out of range. He's taken to see the clothing rack; he prefers the sherwani to the suit, the blue scarf to the red. The make-up man goes to work with his brushes, sponges, combs and clippers and once he's done, clicks a photograph on his mobile phone and passes it across to Rahman for his opinion. What do you think, better without gel, no? Rahman asks the director. You decide, is the answer. A yellowand-white striped towel is whipped out and Rahman willingly submits to having his head

After Guru, Ash and Mani have developed a great comfort level with one another. Mani was very disappointed with the way Lajjo never got off the ground. So he discussed the film idea with Ash recently. And when she gave him a positive response he decided to re-work the script a little and he is now in talks for the male lead, he adds. Initially Lajjo was to star Aamir Khan but creative differences between the two stalwarts is said to have made Ratnam shelve the project. The film will be an adaptation of Ismat Chugtais book of the same name. The first draft of the film showed the male lead called Mirza as a wild and corrupt bachelor leading a reckless life. He owns a shop and frequents brothels and is coerced into hiring Lajjo, a prostitute, as his maid who then over time finds a place in his good books. Mirza marries her but his fierce possessiveness sours their lives. Her once brazen sensuality is now perceived as obscene. Soon Mirza returns to brothel women and Lajjo finds comfort in her neighbours arms. The duo is caught red-handed by Mirza who beats her up and then divorces her. http://www.indya.com/news/newsDetails.aspx?xfile=2008/April/News_20080414_142

[arr] [SemiARR] Sivaji will now speak in Hindi
Gladwin Emmanuel Chennai: Produced by AVM and directed by Shankar, `Sivaji the Boss,' rewrote the box-office history of Tamil cinema. It was Rajnikanth's 100th film in Tamil. The decision to dub the movie came after the tremendous response it got from the non-Tamil speaking people in the north. The movie has been completely dubbed into Hindi (It will retain its original title) under the supervision of Swanand Kirkire, a script writer and lyricist in his own right, at a theatre in Mumbai. The movie is expected to be released in a couple of weeks. The marketing process has already started, said S C Babu, CEO of AVM Production. The Tamil verson had seen a bumper opening in over 850 screens Since the original three-hour duration may not be acceptable to the Hindi audience, editing changes have been effected to cut down the length of the Hindi version to around 2 hours and 20 minutes. Some portions which have appeal only to a Tamil-speaking audience and comedy tracks and sequences which will not have the same kind of appeal for a Hindi audience have been removed without affecting the continuity of the movie. The lyrics were re-written. The Tamil verson of the movie had witnessed a bumper opening in over 850 screens, when it was released. With A R Rehman's music, K V Anand's cinematography and Thottatharani's artwork, the movie has also won applauds abroad. It managed to find a place in the top 10 movies in UK box-office. Rajni, reportedly had taken home a wad of Rs 1.60 million for Sivaji which is the most expensive Indian film ever. Even top Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan charge about Rs 90 million per film. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/net/mmpaper.aspx?Page=articlesectid=3contentid=2008041320080413021104582c702871c

I didnt mean it that way. Any copy of ARR 's songs can be discussed, but it doesnt serve any purpose. We all know for sure that ARR is the undisputed leader. . May be we can remove the term copy and use ARR ;s tunes used by other Mds. instead of naming them, and commenting bad abt them. That was my point. Cool.. Hey Karthik, I know u very well. In 2005 we ARR fans met at Anna Tower park beside Iyappan Temple. Did u remember that? Myself, you, Vinoth Raju, Baskar, Guruprasad etc., We enquired at A.M.Studio itself. They gave us the Audio Media Education Pvt Ltd., Office number. Thats it. I got an information from one of ARR at chennai fan who knows the close associates of ARR said that a new website gonna get launched soon. Registration can be done in that. I don't know how far this info is true. But as I observed from the consecutive interviews of ARR, he himself mentioned initially 150 students are gonna be the maximum strength and he got 300 applications so far. regards, sribalaji. [arr] Background Music - the best that stayed with me
http://desitrain.com/2008/04/15/background-music-the-best-thats-stayed-with-me/ 3. *Thiruda Thiruda (A.R. Rahman)* If you haven't heard the background score for the Tamil movie Thiruda Thiruda, you need to drop everything you have now, right now and rush to find it anywhere you can and listen to it. And I can bet you that you will be mesmerized. The background track on the album encompasses all phases the movie moves through. For the love of God, the visuals of Mr. oz jumping from the hill on to the train are flashed by my brain even today. Notwithstanding that the first time I heard it I was in my early twenties… today it's the late thirties… but the freshness of those visuals and stunts oz performs in his head each time the finger hits play on Thiruda Thiruda's background score… breathless!!! The soundtrack was released in Hindi titled Chor Chor. *Something to pop your eyeballs out of the sockets*: Ram Gopal Varma wrote the story and Mani Ratnam directed it. 8. *Bombay (A.R. Rahman)* This makes you see the aftermath of riots in your head and the healing touch of those bells… amazing! http://desitrain.com/2008/04/15/background-music-the-best-thats-stayed-with-me/ -- regards, Vithur Whatever God wants to give, no one can deny; Whatever God wants to deny, no one can give. [arr] 'The time for India in the western world is now'
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Editorial/The_time_for_India_in_the_western_world_is_now/articleshow/2954406.cms For A R Rahman, the world is a musical oyster. His musical scoreshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Editorial/The_time_for_India_in_the_western_world_is_now/articleshow/2954406.cms#for Tamil and Hindi films have been hugely popular. Having nurtured the dream of creating a self-contained western music orchestra, he's now working towards that dream. Rahman talks to Subhash K Jha: At 41, is there a sense of satisfaction within you? In my life I've always found dreams do come true, though often they come true long after you've forgotten them. Just preserve your dream at the bottom of your heart and wait for it to fructify. For six years I've been nurturing a dream of giving western classical musichttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Editorial/The_time_for_India_in_the_western_world_is_now/articleshow/2954406.cms#a legitimacy in our country, to cultivate the dedication and discipline of orchestral musichttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Editorial/The_time_for_India_in_the_western_world_is_now/articleshow/2954406.cms#in our youngsters, who at the moment feel that western classical is too distant and esoteric for them. My ultimate dream is to create an orchestra that is capable of performing the world's best musical pieces. Today, after carrying this dream in my head, I'm ready to implement my passion for western music. We've launched our music conservatory. What do you hope to achieve? I want to teach young musicians how to play within an orchestra. As things stand if I want to record orchestral music I've to go to Prague. If Ilaiyaraaja wants to record an epic score he goes to Budapest. Why can't we do it right here in our own country? I want to build a repertoire of musicians who can play western instruments as expertly as the sitar or tabla. Our talented young musicians who want to learn western classical music have to head for London. I want to give a certain legitimacy to western classical music in our country. Indian classical music has room for unlimited improvisation and spontaneity. A classical recital requires far more formal discipline. And the whole orchestra brings one emotion into play throughout a recital. We don't have that discipline in our country. It used to be there. But now the younger generation is more enthused by other forms of western music like dancehttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Editorial/The_time_for_India_in_the_western_world_is_now/articleshow/2954406.cms#and hip-hop. Does this dream project mean you'd be moving away from film music? No, my film compositions always have a core of classical music. When I say I want to nurture orchestral music in our country it doesn't mean that the students will be playing Bach and Beethoven all the time. Now you're spending a lot of time at home rather than travelling. I think the time for India in the western world is now. The respect for all things Indian has gone up in recent times. We need to take an initiative to propagate our culture. Yes, I've consciously cut down on assignments in Mumbai. I'm happy I'm moving to another level. The unknown always fascinates me. If it didn't, a Roja wouldn't have happened. -- regards, Vithur Whatever God wants to give, no one can deny; Whatever God wants to deny, no one can give. Be happy always

You

This is ARR we are talking about. I am pretty sure they could have asked something far interesting than when did you started playing piano. [arr] Lets Get Into Action.
I tink we are not going to get anythin saying HJ coppied this and that. What need to be discussed is the song PilotesAutomatqies which is coppied from OttagathaKattikko by ARR. I don't credits are given to ARR... I found this article. Read it... A R Rahman's 'Ottagatha Kattikko'(Gentleman, 1993) and La Caution's 'PilotesAutomatqies', 2005. This one's a reverse! Or, it possibly could be. Just came across (thanksto messages in the Rahman Yahoo Group and TFM Page) a track 'PilotesAutomatqies' by a French hip-hop group called 'La Caution'. And itsamples almost throughout the song, A R Rahman's 1993 chartbuster 'OttagathaKattikko' from Gentleman (called 'Roop Suhana lagta hai' in Hindi!). Thehip-hop track is part of La Caution's 2005 album, 'Arc En Ciel Pour DalToniens'. Now, a few pertinent questions. Does the French album includea credit to Rahman? How did they come to know about a Tamil track...anypossible Indian connection somewhere? And most importantly, does Rahman know? between -00-00 and -99-99
