 Music of the soul

MEERA SRINIVASAN

 A.R. Rahman’s
journey from being a young lad who was enticed by the keyboard to
becoming a world-class musician is marked by a rare grit.

MIKE BLAKE/REUTERS

A.R. Rahman with his two Oscars at the 81st Academy Awards
ceremony in Hollywood on February 22.

“I FEEL like a slate waiting to be written on.” These were the
words of Allah Rakha Rahman, after he was honoured by the Rotary Club
in Chennai last June. In less than a year, so much has got written on
the “slate”, one would think. But ask him, “Oh, this is just a
beginning. There is so much more to do,” is what he said after
returning home with the two Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire (Best Score and Best
Song).
No matter how many coveted awards flood in, Rahman will remain the
same, a simple musician humbled by the magnificence of music. “The
spirit of his music is in his total devotion to the art; it is a
complete surrender,” says Srinivas Krishnan, mentor at Rahman’s K.M.
Music Conservatory. “We often talk about M.S. Subbulakshmi’s music,
which is an example of that kind of devotion.”
Rahman’s journey from being a young lad, who was enticed by the
keyboard, to becoming a world-class musician is marked by perseverance
and a rare grit.
These were, perhaps, in his genes, for his mother Kareena Begum is herself an
inspiring model of courage and determination.
“Our father passed away when Rahman was about 10. Things were not
easy at home. But my mother made sure that we did not feel our father’s
absence and brought us up with so much love,” says Rahane, the eldest
daughter of the family.
On the day Rahman, his wife Saira and his mother returned to their
Kodambakkam residence after the Oscars, Kareena Begum, who was greeted
by excited well-wishers, merely smiled and said: “It is God’s grace.”
Rahman, who also believes that every success of his is a divine
gift, converted to Islam in the early 1990s. It is said that an
inexplicable sense of reassurance and comfort that the words of a saint
created in Dilip Kumar (as Rahman was then known) persuaded him to take
a new path as Allah Rakha Rahman.
Listen to his “Anbendra mazhaiyile” (Minsaara Kanavu), “O palan hare” (Lagaan)
or “Khwaja mere Khwaja” (Jodhaa Akbar).
In all the three tunes, binding the lyrics on different faiths, there
is a common underlying melody that conveys submission. “Music and
religion are the only important things for him,” says Fathima, Rahman’s
younger sister.
With these two guiding forces, Rahman plunged into the media
industry, with tunes that came like the fresh breeze. “It was so
unbelievably new, different and ahead of its times,” says Trilok of
Trish Productions, which made the Leo Coffee advertisement with
Rahman’s score.
The strains from that veena and flute, in the predominantly
melodious piece, had the stamp of a genius and highlighted the
influence classical music had on him. It was Trilok and Sharada of
Trish who later introduced Rahman to film director Mani Ratnam, for an
association that was to produce some of the best melodies and stylish
numbers that Kollywood can boast of.

Rahman and Mani Ratnam

In 1992, Rahman’s national award-winning music for Roja
was a revelation. Suddenly, everyone’s ears tuned in to the magic of
“Chinna chinna aasai”. The brief vocal prelude to “Kaadal rojavae” was
powerful and the mischief in “Rukkumani rukkumani” made listeners
blush. “Pudu vellai mazhai” virtually took one to snow-covered
mountains and “Tamizha Tamizha” introduced Hariharan’s voice to the
world of films. Ever since, whenever Rahman

Agree.
Just this morning I popped the CD of Indira into my CD player. A beautiful albu
with soulful melodies - special mention to Thoda Thoda malarndadu enna by SPB
and Nila Kaigiradu ( both versions). My drive to office is typically 10 minutes
long, but I had a tough time getting out of the car this morning and actually
sat in the parking lot waiting for a song to finish. I was studying for my 12th
standard exminations when this album released and I could actually recollect
some of the stuff I had studied with the earphones plugged in and this album o
repeat.
I appreciate the break in ARR albums more than I thought I would!

D6 and the next one, which is probably going to be Blue in July. This will
allow me to really assimilate all the great music he has dished out in the past
year, alow time to listen to his earlier albums, and also listen to other
artists' works, who I have been neglecting. Nevertheless, I'm eagerly awaiting
Blue and all the rest of them lined up!

Re: Re: [arr] Remembering the songs from Taj Mahal

2009-03-17 Thread crishna3
Why Tajmahl songs went unnoticed; obviously the movie did not do well is
the primary reason. Apart from this, ARR was giving a tough competition to
himself by having no. of releases at the same time and apparently,
Mudhalvan audio was also released within a span of 1 week.
May be in the years to come, we can see the same topic with a change of
album name ie Tajmahal to Yuvraaj. What you think guys

[arr] A Rahman jugalbandi with Rafi

2009-03-17 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

A Rahman jugalbandi with Rafi

For 27-year-old Mohammed Rafi and his wife Mehnaz, it was a once-in-a-lifetime
moment as Oscar
winner A R Rahman visited them at their home in Devinagar on Tuesday afternoon
to give away an
award

PRIYANKA NAHATA AND VINESH VASANTH BETRABET

It was an all-too-brief meeting at their home just after noon on Tuesday,
but for Mohammed
and Mehnaz Rafi it’s afterglow is something they will cherish for life as a
sepia moment.
Oscar-winning music director A R Rahman stopped by at RMV Cluster, Devinagar,
to say hello and
hand over an award to the couple, after they had won a lucky-draw contest
sponsored by a cell
phone company for which Rahman has done the ad jingles.
“Sorry I don’t have any time for bakra calls,” that was exactly what
Mohammed Rafi, an
engineer, said when he first got a call that told him of Rahman’s visit to his
house. Rafi, all
of 27-years, says, “Usually it is in a five-star hotel or an airport that we
bump into
celebrities, but today it was my own house where I hosted one of India’s
greatest musicians, A
R Rahman.”
It was on March 15 that the Rafis were intimated about the award they had
won and Rahman’s
arrival. Rafi had to postpone an important official visit to Delhi. And with
just two days left
for his arrival, there were many doubts in the couple’s mind. We were very
excited but at the
same time a bit apprehensive about our small house. We were wondering what to
do to make this
moment memorable for him, says Rafi. A lot of preparation went in terms of
security and the
whole apartment was whitewashed, he adds.
A GIFT FOR MAESTRO
Rahman, dressed in his usual attire of a Polo T-shirt, jeans and a blazer
came surrounded
by guards and the marketing executives of the company which had sponsored his
visit to Rafi’s
house. He arrived at 12.05 pm and straight away went and shook hands with Rafi
and said, “This
is Rahman. I am sure you must be Rafi.” The two had a private chat where they
spoke about each
other’s families and jobs. Rahman then went on to narrate his experience when
he visited Ajmer
recently. His eyes sparkling, Rafi goes on to say, “We offered him a special
Strawberry-Vanilla
cake. It was homemade and he appreciated its taste and complimented my wife. I
didn’t want to
indulge in any ‘official’ talk about how he felt winning the Oscars and which
are his
forthcoming films. We get enough to read about it everyday so we chose to about
work and
family.”
EXCLUSIVE PRESENT
Rafi, although not a very big fan of Rahman, knew that he was a very
religious person and
Rahman gleefully accepted the two presents which the Rafis gave him. One was a
table-top
calendar of religious symbols and the other was a prayer book in which a few
verses extracted
from the holy Quran had been inscribed. After having opened the first one in
everyone’s
presence, Rahman refused to open the other one saying that it was an exclusive
present and he
would like to keep it just for himself. “Whatever you do, may God bless you
with success in all
your endeavours,” were the words on the prayer book.
MEMORIES FOR POSTERITY
“A stage had been set up in our apartment and we were supposed to walk hand
in hand with
Rahman to the podium but that never happened,” says a slightly disappointed
Rafi. Although not
many people knew about the visit, the news soon spread fast and before no time
a crowd had
gathered. As Rehman arrived in a Benz, children and elders alike mobbed him for
autographs and
posed with him for a few photographs too. Everyone around was shouting Jai Ho.
The Rafis
couldn’t manage to ask all the thousand unformed questions reeling in their
heads but they did
ask Rehman about his nickname ‘Isai Puyal’. Pat came the answer: “It means ‘A
musical storm’.”
We did not even get a chance to hold his hand and walk down the apartment
or to sit on the
couch for an interview as planned earlier. Everything turned disorderly, says
Mehnaz Rafi. It
was a short-lived but intense moment of joy for the couple as Rahman soon left
for an ad shoot.

[arr] Killing them softly...

2009-03-17 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

Killing them softly...
Deepa Natarajan
"I shouldnt do something to disappoint the audience as well as myself"
A R Rahman

His silence speaks volumes, and his peaceful smile can melt millions of hearts.
But everyone
knows music maestro Allah Rakha Rahman is known for more than that. With
soulful notes that
strike a magical chord with the audience, time and again, it wouldn’t be
incorrect to say that
whatever he touches, turns into gold. The Oscar-winner took time out in
between a shoot to
speak to Metrolife.

The Oscar frenzy is yet to die down with the entire world wanting for more of
the man. So, what
does he think of his journey so far? He thinks a lot and smiles, “The progress
has been good,
but very strange actually.” He treasures the National Award he won for Roja as
much as the
Academy Award. “It was an honour to win the National Award for my first film
itself,” he says.
“But winning an Oscar feels nice too as it was the first film I got nominated
for.”

One thing that the genius is careful about, is to not disappoint his fans. “I
am very careful
about not doing things,” he smiles and adds, “Because I shouldn’t do something
to disappoint
the audience, as well as myself. I want to satisfy myself as an artist.”

Currently, the man is working on the music of three films — Mani Ratnam’s
Ravana, Shankar’s
Enthiran (Robot) and Anthony D’Souza’s Blue. “The music of these films will be
similar to what
I have been doing all these years,” is all he says. How does he feel about Jai
Ho making its
way to the Billboards. “It was planned because we wanted to keep the Slumdog
fever going.
That’s why the Pussy Cat Dolls was chosen for it,” he replies.
One can’t help but ask him about his experience of working with Kylie Minogue
in Blue. “Kylie
is like a child,” he says. “She is very sweet. I actually wanted to make her
sing in Hindi but
I fell ill at that point of time.” He adds, “That song was recorded just a day
after the
BAFTAs.” The soft-spoken man has had a close association with Bangalore. “I get
so angry when
people perform here and don’t come to Chennai,” he jokes. Is he referring to
any artiste in
particular? “No, I am just joking,” he laughs. “But there is a great creative
vibe here.” He
recollects the time he performed in the City. “I played here only once, under
very strange
circumstance, with the rain falling over a crowd of thousands.” So when do the
fans in
Bangalore get to see him perform again? “Oh, very soon,” he pauses, and laughs
mischievously,
“Once the recession is over.” But he assures that he will perform in the City
soon.

It’s been a long journey for Rahman. Ask him to recollect one memorable moment,
he thinks about
his pilgrimage to Ajmer Sharief, “It was more awkward actually. It was supposed
to be a secret

[arr] Oh ! What a Surprise - Rani Magazine Tidbits

2009-03-17 Thread Vithur
" Raani" Tamil Magazine Tidbits on ARR

*Oh ! What a Surprise*

Balachander had put the name of Sekar in his movie " Naanal". In future, the
same Balachander produced and Maniratnam directed " Roja", and his son
became the Music Composer. What an Union.

Once when Shekhar went to Mumbai, he wanted to catch a glimpse of famous
Musician " Naushad " from a distance. His desire and dream didnt get
fulfilled. The same Naushad came to his most loved son Rahman's residence
and this wasnt foreseen by Shekhar at that moment.

Seeing Shekhar's Musical Talents, S.D. Burman invited him to Bollywood for
composing music. But he didnt go. In future, the same Bollywood Industry had
put red Carpet for his Beloved Son Rahman, and had welcomed him and this is
such a big surprise.

wrote:

last days i was visiting Rome (Italy). there were some small
experiences of SDM/ARR i want to share.

once while walking on the famous Via del Corso street i suddenly heard someone
singing ringa ringa. as i looked there were two Italian guys (both probably in
their 40s) passing by, one singing "ring ring ringa, ring ring ringa" to the
other. i was so amazed and tried to hear more however could not get what they
talked after that (in Italian language). and after that they started discussing
Latika (Freida Pinto) :-) probably they were just coming out of the cinema as
it was located on the same street a little ahead. perhaps one of them was
describing the other how he liked the songs etc. i was so amazed that how
general western audience liked the music. i also realized how catchy ringa
ringa is for westerners compared to other songs of SDM. may be if i had heard
them a little ago i found them talking about Jai ho and others as well.

later benefiting from my visit i took some time to experience watching SDM
there (in cinema). although I had already seen it twice (thanks to piracy) but
not on big screen as it was not released here in Denmark until recently. SDM
was released in Italy on 5 December under the title "The Millionaire". i
watched it in a fully packed theater. and do i need to add that not a single
person left the hall until Jai ho was completely ended? i think no.

watching the experience was overwhelming and i must say altogether new compared
to watching it on small screen. the BGM was so exotic and thumping which added
immense energy to scenes. talking about the songs besides O saya especially the
way Mausam & escape was used was truly awesome. i really loved to see that they
used the best of the lot (Mausam & escape) twice. it is so energetic and
thumping especially in the second scene where first it runs lightly in
background as Jamal sees Latika on platform and then suddenly starts loudly as
Saleem and his guys run to get Latika. i also noticed that when Mausam & escape
is played in the first scene (kids escaping) the sitar is played in the
background, i mean it is not very prominent as if it was "dimmed" but in the
second scene it is loud and very clear. the second best piece i liked was when
Liquid dance is played, loud and right in your face, un-ignorable. also i
noticed that there is a difference between
versions of "Riots" on CD and in the movie. in the later there is some
additional instrument, like piano, playing throughout, which is missing in CD
version.

also on my way to Rome (in Munich) i noticed an article on SDM's Oscars in a
German newspaper (called "Bild") which i found interesting somehow. here is a
scan of it:

http://img7. imageshack. us/img7/7792/ arrpaper. jpg

the article circles ARR's in photo. it mentions him with full name Allah Rakha
Rahman all the way. here is the translation i managed to come up with:

"Composer Alla Rakha Rahman (43) is the son of an Indian left politician."

wow... did we know that? lol. or perhaps it is translation error.

"Composer Allah Rakha Rahman (best film music) should become a doctor, however
failed (or dropped) in exam.

wow.. did we know that? at least not me.

"The title song " Jai ho" (Best song) was written for the film " Yuvraaj"
(Remake of "Rain Man") nevertheless its director did not want it."

quite right that Ghai did not want it however it is a surprise to me that
Yuvraaj was a remake of Rain Main.

ARR-Catch him if U can! IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, March 17, 2009]

Considering the demand for his compositions, getting A.R.Rahman on board for
a project was never an easy task for the producers back in India. Now after
his twin-Oscar triumph, it has become all the more difficult. In all
probabilities the music maestro will be seen doing less music for Indian
films.

Well this situation is due to the newly formed upsurge in the international
music markets for his contributions. The celebrated pop star Akon has now
collaborated with Rahman for a song titled ‘Beautiful’. A.R.R is also being
featured in the video of this track along with the American Pop singer Colby
O’ Donis and Canadian hip hop artist Kardinal Offishall.

The other person to soon work with the music wizard will be Nicole
Scherzinger, the lead singer of the girl band “Pussycat Dolls”. The band had
already worked on their English version of the song ‘Jai Ho’ from ‘Slumdog
Millionaire’. It looks like Nicole has taken a great liking for Rahman’s
kinda music. She will soon start the work on a full album with Rahman.

There are also murmurs going around that the composer will be working with
the gorgeous lady vocalist from India and a video will also be shot in the
typical Bollywood style.

Sangamam is one of my all time favourite albums of Rahman..I can easily say
that this is one Rahman album which I have heard maximum number of times..Since
its release no week has gone by wherein I didnt hear the songs from Sangamam
atleast once..I go totally crazy when it comes to songs from Sangamam.

All the songs are amazing in this album...The way MSV and Hariharan bring in
energy in Alalakanda, the melting voice of sujatha when she starts of with
Mudal murai, Shankar mahadevan's amazing rendition of Varagzhai, the powerfull
voice of Nityashree in Sowkiyama, the richness of Margazhi thingal and the
burst of emotions in Mazhai Thuli..this album is an amazing experience.

Well My most fav song from Sangamam would be Margazhi Thingal..

The entire Fiza album would make its listeners feel the presence of AR because
of Ranjit Barot who arranged the songs. Ranjit was earlier associated with AR

I need to express my feelings about this song from Sangamam, which
really impresses both intellectually and emotionally. The way
Shankar M has sung this song is absolutely divine. The infectious
dholak rhythm with the Mast Qalandar like melody (not at all copied)
makes this song my very favorite from Sangamam.

I love it when the second interlude adds this incredibly infectious
ghungru rhythm, very similar in pattern to the Taal Se Taal mila,
Hai Na, Chale Chalo Mitwa ghungru tracks, taken away, then back
again for the final portion of the song. Just pure magic.

I truly with Shankar M would sing for ARR again.

Heard that ARR said that Mani's next would be kind of similar to the
style of Sangamam (folk, semi classical), so we can really look
forward to that.

Am curious to know what everyone's favorite song from Sangamam is.

oru poiyavathu song is from the film jodi, not tajmahal.
my fav from tajmahal is kuliridu kuliridu and chota chota, especially in the
male version the usage of guitar in the beginning and again towards the end is
just awesome :) all songs from tajmahal rocked, but the film was really a big
big disappoinment :(

One of ARR's most beautiful albums. Just oozing with melody and soul and with
good experimentation too. My favorites are Senkatte, Karisal Tharisil, Chotta
Chotta, Oru Poiyavathu, and Eechi Elumichi (mayo mayojust awesome!).

[arr] sharing my little SdM/ARR experience in Italy

2009-03-17 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
last days i was visiting Rome (Italy). there were some small experiences of
SDM/ARR i want to share.

once while walking on the famous Via del Corso street i suddenly heard someone
singing ringa ringa. as i looked there were two Italian guys (both probably in
their 40s) passing by, one singing "ring ring ringa, ring ring ringa" to the
other. i was so amazed and tried to hear more however could not get what they
talked after that (in Italian language). and after that they started discussing

SDM
was released in Italy on 5 December under the title "The Millionaire". i
watched it in a fully packed theater. and do i need to add that not a single
person left the hall until Jai ho was completely ended? i think no.
watching the experience was overwhelming and i must say altogether new compared
to watching it on small screen. the BGM was so exotic and thumping which added
immense energy to scenes. talking about the songs besides O saya especially the
way Mausam & escape was used was truly awesome. i really loved to see that they
used the best of the lot (Mausam & escape) twice. it is so energetic and
thumping especially in the second scene where first it runs lightly in
background as Jamal sees Latika on platform and then suddenly starts loudly as
Saleem and his guys run to get Latika. i also noticed that when Mausam & escape
is played in the first scene (kids escaping) the sitar is played in the
background, i mean it is not very prominent as if it was "dimmed" but in the
second scene it is loud and very clear. the second best piece i liked was when
Liquid dance is played, loud and right in your face, un-ignorable. also i
noticed that there is a difference between versions of "Riots" on CD and in the
movie. in the later there is some additional instrument, like piano, playing
throughout, which is missing in CD version.

also on my way to Rome (in Munich) i noticed an article on SDM's Oscars in a
German newspaper (called "Bild") which i found interesting somehow. here is a
scan of it:

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7792/arrpaper.jpg

the article circles ARR's in photo. it mentions him with full name Allah Rakha

(Remake of "Rain Man") nevertheless its director did not want it."

quite right that Ghai did not want it however it is a surprise to me that
Yuvraaj was a remake of Rain Main.

no one is arguing here. we are simply sharing our views. if you dont like it
but others do it does not mean they are arguing. for me MP is one of his better
albums. Mangal mangal (Agni), Rasiya and Al madam maula are always among my

about Ghajini, yes i somehow agree that it is a weak album but only due to

[arr] And The Award Goes To

2009-03-17 Thread Prakash Balaramkrishna
http://backgroundscore.blogspot.com/2009/03/and-award-goes-to.html

A.R..Rahman after winning every possible international award for his background
score in 'Slumdog Millionaire', is now winning every possible Hindian Best
Background Score award for 'Jodha Akbar'.
Given the length and the drama of Jodha Akbar, it is evident that
Rahman has worked really hard on the background score of 'Jodha Akbar'
and he himself admitted he composed more than 100 cues for Jodha
Akbar's background score.

But as I already mentioned here,
though Jodha Akbar has some great background scoring moments, as a
whole, Jodha Akbar's score is not Rahman's best in 2008. In 2008,
Rahman did background score for 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na', 'Jodha Akbar',
'Ghajini' and 'Yuuvraaj'.
I haven't seen 'Yuuvraaj', so can't really comment on its score, but
Ghajini's score was too loud. Unfortunately, Rahman has gone Harris
Jeyaraj way in its loudness, and it may also be because the movie
director is the same A.R.Murugadass, who directed the Tamil version.

In
the interview with Raihana in the Rahmania show, Murugadass confirmed
that it is he who wanted the score to sound like the way it is in the
movie. Rahman delivered what Murugadass demanded and hence the
loudness. But all that is an excuse, I thought Rahman with his
influence would reduce the loudness and make the movie sound saner.
There is so much scope in Ghajini for a much deeper and intelligent
scoring, which Rahman didn't make full use of. Finally, 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na'
is the movie which has a consistently good background score throughout the
movie.

Moving
away from A.R.Rahman, of all the movies that I got a chance to watch in
2008, two movies had background score that is worth talking about - Mithya and
Aamir.
Though the main theme sounds heavily inspired from the theme of Requiem
for Dream, Amit Trivedi did a good job in pushing the raw energy, pace,
tension and the suspense with his score in Aamir. If the score is just
as good as the movie, then my best background score award for 2008 goes
to Mithya. Beautifully subtle and adequately expressive is the score
for Mithya. Evoking the feel of classic Nino Rita's Godfather score, Sagar
Desai’s score for Mithya, to me is the best of 2008.

available in the market? first of all, will ARR ever tend to do that? ARR by
himself told in the interview that all the MDs should be more creative and
conscious with one's work as the international market has started noticing
the individual work.

jus trust ARR and that wud disable all the comparisons arising in the mind.
it wud allow one to better enjoy the BGMs...

ARR rocks with ghajini BGMs...

[arr] "Blue" release date 14th August

2009-03-17 Thread russel_mohammed
Blue release date on 14th August.

We have to wait till July for Audio Release.

Any other release b4 that..?

Any one hav any information.

'Blue', 'London Dreams' set to clash on August 14
Mumbai (IANS): It will be a clash of the Titans. Two of the biggest films of
the year, Vipul Shah's "London Dreams" and director Anthony D'Souza's "Blue",
are set to release on the same day - August 14.

To prevent the clash in dates, Vipul has been trying to convince the makers of
"Blue" to release it a week earlier. "I don't think there should be a problem.
Not with Akshay (Kumar) being part of 'Blue'," Vipul told IANS.

Vipul had earlier taken friend Akshay into confidence and met Raj Mehta, head
honcho of Asthavinayak, to request them for a change in the release date of
"Blue".

"It wasn't just any two big films clashing. It was an Akshay starrer clashing
with my film. Akshay is not just a favourite actor, a close friend and business
associate. His business interests are my concern. So we did request Raj Mehta
to shift the date for their 'Blue'. Yes, they've agreed to release the film one
week before 'London Dreams' August 7," Vipul had said.

However, Anthony D'Souza, who is shooting round the clock to complete the film,
insists that the release will be on schedule.

"As far as I know they ('London Dreams') are releasing a week before us. We're
releasing on Aug 13 (a Thursday) which is a public holiday. The added holiday
gives us the longest-ever weekend for a film to release and grow."

Vipul, however, insists "London Dreams" is coming out on Aug 14.

To this, Anthony D'Souza said: "In that case we'll both come together. There's
no way we're pre-poning 'Blue'. We want the long Independence Day weekend. Are
we stupid to give it up because of competition. In any case 'London Dreams' and
'Blue' are very different films. I believe there's room for two big films when
they don't clash in theme or star cast."

However, Vipul seems to think it's suicidal to release both films during the
same weekend. "London Dreams" features Ajay Devgan and Salman Khan.

[arr] Did u forget EN KADHALE from DUET ?????

2009-03-17 Thread mana...@gmail.com
I think this is the best romantic song composed by maestro. ARR used
SAXOFONE very very outstandingly in this song. Wheneve i listen this song it
makes me crying.

Re: [arr] Download Ghajini voiceless BGM - HQ

2009-03-17 Thread Ramesh R

Doesn't the 1st cue (30 seconds of Ghajini Theme) sound like a big-time homage
to Ennio Morricone? That repeating 3 note motif is similar to the revenge theme
in Once Upon A Time In The West (Man with the Harmonica) minus the wailing
sounds and guitars.
There was another homage to the same theme in Pirates of the Caribbean.

This BGM set is missing the music that's just before the Run Run (Yogi) part.
There's a nice piece when Aamir is chasing the police officer and subsequently
when the crowd gathers around. I thought I heard the same revenge theme with
wailing sounds and that sounded closer to the Morricone piece. Anyone have that
extract from the movie?

2009-03-17 Thread jibandevta
Varaaga Nadhikarai is extremely fabulous..Infact the complete
album 'Sangamam' along with BGMs rock big time..

Marghazi Thingal and Mazha Thuli are splendid too.
The freshness in this album is beyond words..I do not know
single word of Tamil, but song like 'Varaaga'rose above the
language barrier.
Really Want Shankar M again to sing for AR and bring out another classic like
Sangamam.

Re: [arr] Varaaga Nadhikarai

2009-03-17 Thread Sath Murthy
Even though this song has been credited as Shankar Mahadevan's first tamil
song. He has already debuted in Tamil film VIP and sung Netru No No along with
Dominique. May be this can be said as his first Solo song.

ARR produced gems for this movie sangamam.. which was completely wasted by
Suresh Krishna (another one was Baba).
MSV along with Hariharan song was spectacular Wow what a combo...

Sath.

I need to express my feelings about this song from Sangamam, which really
impresses both intellectually and emotionally. The way Shankar M has sung this
song is absolutely divine. The infectious dholak rhythm with the Mast Qalandar
like melody (not at all copied) makes this song my very favorite from Sangamam.

I love it when the second interlude adds this incredibly infectious ghungru
rhythm, very similar in pattern to the Taal Se Taal mila, Hai Na, Chale Chalo
Mitwa ghungru tracks, taken away, then back again for the final portion of the
song. Just pure magic.

I truly with Shankar M would sing for ARR again.

Heard that ARR said that Mani's next would be kind of similar to the style of
Sangamam (folk, semi classical), so we can really look forward to that.

Am curious to know what everyone's favorite song from Sangamam is.

[arr] Enai Kanavillaye from Kadhal Desam - Need Info

2009-03-17 Thread Sath Murthy
As we all know that the song Enai Kanavillaye was a masterpiece by ARR. Sung by
SPB and another classical singer named O.S.Arun.

I guess that was the one and only time ARR used Arun's voice for a song. I also
remember that Arun mentioning that the original tune of this song was based on
a pakistani ghazal or something.. I don't exactly recollect the words of Arun.
The article also mentioned that Arun sang this song and ended with the
pakistani song that he was referring too in that function.

Do anyone have any info on this... Was it a inspiration or a? please
clarify...

Thanks
Sath Murthy.
