Re: [arr] WHERE DID THEY GET THESE SONGS

2010-01-11 Thread sreekrishnan_v

Gops et.al.,

the finger pointing has to stop, but there is certainly a point. Ofcourse
Launch and Release are 2 different things, but i think it makes no sense to
keep the 2 dates this apart. If you know what i mean, you will agree that with
people expecting so much out of this : If a song is Launched -[ it means You
have it production ready] and Ideally, every single fan including you would
like to listen to it as well.

I am not siding to the argument that it was gautam Menon's fault as i think
there are others who made the decision. But certainly, this was a bad decision
and one of the best discussions in the group. There is a lot for the industry
to take from what we discussed here !

You lower the rate of a cd, Make it available as soon as [following weekend if
not the next day] it was launched. I think the Logistics are fairly simple
there and can be coordinated well - and the whole point is to stop people from
deviating/trying other means to get hold of a song we love to listen to,
considering 2009 was a No Tamil Song Year from rahman !

A day away and songs are amazing ! Its time for the reviews :)

lets bring it on !

the audio of vtv was launched in london last month, december (20th Dec to
  be precise)...

we are in jan 2010 (pls do not go the extent of calculating days and argue
that its not been 30/31 days to confirm as one whole month) ... still no
sight of the audio cds !!!

I will always be a die-hard rahmaniac but given the in-sensitiveness of
producers i'd rather expect rahman's albums be released on his own KM label,
than the commercial mindset of the producers, and i mean it !!

When a movie is released WORLDWIDE, it means that all the theatres
worldwide start to show the movie in the theater from that day onwards,
isn't it and they do this after making sure that the copies of the
movie are available in all the theatres. Latest example being AVATAR (Only
an example), it doesn't mean when the home dvd's are available for general
  public !!!

again, if the produers are not sure about the security of the songs, then
why go ahead and release them in an alien country than the native country ??
VTV is a tamil album and it must be available first in a tamil-dominated
  area than in london !!!

I have nothing against Rahman, he's a living legend, but against the
promoters, producers, music companies (or whatever u call them)

Please get your facts right before launching into a diatribe. The music was
not released in London a month early. Nor have they been released on any
digital distribution medium like Amazon or iTunes. The CDs have to be
dispatched ahead of the release date (the 12th) in order to ensure a
simultaneous release everywhere (without which too, fans would bay for the
label's blood). Unfortunately, the distribution and retail trade in parts of
India, South and South East Asia as well as Tamil-dominated pockets of
Europe don't have the most secure systems and processes in place to prevent
  pilfering of CDs.

I've always wondered the rationale behind releasing the audio... and what
it means.. when the audio is released it MUST be available to the listeners
without any delay... any delay may cause the listeners to lose interest or
even forget abt it or (as is in this case) download/share the audio from
illegal sources... as far as i go its the producers to blame for not making
  the audio available for all..

Take me for instance, being a die hard rahmaniac, its been my principle to
buy only original cds of all Rahman's albums... but the wait for couples
retreat and vtv has been such that I am too tempted to download from the
net... if this is the case with me, then i can imagine what would be going

Re: [arr] Ur suggestions to control piracy!!

2010-01-11 Thread Sripathy Ramesh
I agree. To control piracy, the price of the CDs should be affordable. CDs
costing Rs. 99 or Rs. 160 is still not affordable to buy on a regular
basis. The audio CD of the recent film Kanden Kadhalai was sold at Rs. 27.
Now that is smart pricing. The production house of KK is MoserBaer.

And film songs now-a-days have shorter attention span. Meaning after a few
listenings, you will conveniently forget the CD. The songs will be played over
and over in TV channels and Radio stations. So you get tired of the songs in a
few months. So the current pricing is what discourages people.

By the way, I will be buying the VTV CD, but sad to see reviews on the music
album even before the launch. This might affect the sales of the album.

Ramesh

I believe in freedom of Internet ( I wouldnt like to be in China or KSA for
this reason )... It's us who need to be changed
At first , Audio CDs price should be lesser , In Bangladesh we buy a Original
Audio CD for 50Taka ( abt 30 Rs ) ... I think this is an affordable price , I
bought abt 10 CD - DVDs from Kolkata for 1000 Rs ( abt 1800 taka ), to me this
is way too  expensive . Bombay Dreams Audio Cd's Price was 400Rs :s

If u lower the price ...More people will buy the Original CDs for sure

And this CD's productions should be done in a Piracy-Proof Way , Which is
almost impossible ... Actually .. Pirates are more high-tech people than these
CD makers ... They can crack almost anything ...From softwares to games , DVDs
..U name it ... Time to be more high-tech If u want to Stop Piracy

Distribution is also very important ... If m crazy abt listening a ARR Album
and m not getting in my near shops .. I dont have any choice to go for
piracy ...For so many reasons Online Shopping isnt preferable to me .. :-)

Did u ever noticed?

In the west, for an extend they effectively controlled the piracy.

What they are actually doing to control piracy.
Why shouldn't we try their techniques/methods.

My suggestions:

   *  Don't give domain name loosely/liberally to anyone with out proper
ID. Before providing domain name, the authority should collect the proper
 identity.
   * Strictly ban/block such sites.
   * Spread awareness to the peoples effectively.

The premiere of *Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa,* A.R. Rahman's first album
 after
the Oscars, will be powered by DCI Mobile Studios (a division of
   Galatta.com).

Sony Music India's foray into the Tamil movie industry (Kollywood) has
created many landmarks and milestones with some of the most successful
 and
prestigious projects. And in yet another pioneering initiative, Sony
 Music
India announced the global launch and world premiere of A.R. Rahman's
most-anticipated and awaited soundtrack from *Vinnaithaandi
 Varuvaayaa* –
meaning `Will you cross the skies for me?' – and abbreviated to *VTV*.
 What
takes public anticipation to new heights is the fact that this is the
 first
Tamil album from A.R. Rahman after his double Academy Award win and
 just
before the Grammy Awards – scheduled for February 10.

*VTV* stars Silambarasan (Simbhu) – touted as the next superstar in
Kollywood – and beautiful Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles. The film
 is
directed by Gautham Menon (whose previous Tamil film *Vaaranam
 Aayiram* was
a critical, commercial and musical blockbuster with songs released by
 Sony
   Music).

At the sneak music preview of *VTV* held in London on 19th December
2009, the entire cast and crew (including A.R. Rahman, Gautham Menon,
Simbhu, Trisha and all the singers) were present. About this music
 preview,
Gautham Menon said, London was a great experience. We had a live
 unplugged
performance of all the songs by the singers who have sung in the
 album. The
audience, mostly English, loved the music. Everybody felt it sounded
 very
international, which was hardly surprising, considering it was music
 by A.R.
Rahman. The intention was to reach and test the music on an
 international
audience. We achieved more than that. We plan to do a road show with
 all the
singers now. This was a first of it's kind show. Now the expectation
 about
the film is tremendous and the pressure is on me now.

The music of *VTV* will be released physically on CDs and cassettes
 across
the world and via Amazon.com for online buyers. Digitally, *VTV* music
 will
be available on iTunes, Nokia Store, and iPhone application from the
 first
   week of January.

This unique activity for *VTV* will be executed through an iPhone
 music
application (app) which will allow users to stream and listen to the
complete songs, download the songs, wallpapers and other movie-related
   information.

This initiative, a first-in-the-world for an iPhone application
 entirely
based on movie OST by Sony Music, is the result of the joint efforts
 by Sony
Music Entertainment India and DCI Mobile Studios, a leading
 Chennai-based
software and mobile applications developer, a division of Galatta.com.
 The
service will be available to all registered users of iPhone apps
 across the
world. A user will be charged $1.99 for downloading the application,
facilitating unlimited streaming of the songs from the album and $2.99
 to
   download the whole album.

Galatta.com has also taken steps to restrict unauthorized sharing of
 the
content through this unique application. A user who downloads the
 songs on
his iPhone or iPod will not be able to transfer it to any other
 (meaning
   unauthorized) device.

Mr. Shridhar Subramaniam, Managing Director, Sony Music India, said,
 Sony
Music has always been at the forefront of redefining music marketing.
 This
initiative, which is a first in India, will enable a savvy generation
 of
smart phone users to access streamed audio feeds over an active data
connection. Our efforts have always been to make the music reach its
audience as, when, and how they want to enjoy it. We are quite certain
 that
A.R. Rahman's fans and lovers of his music will enjoy his genius
 through
   this application.

is being released in Hindi by Sony Music.

Composed by double Academy Award Winner and Grammy Nominee A R Rahman, the
Hindi soundtrack hits the music stores in Jan 2010. The album features songs
by leading singers like Udit Narayan, Hariharan, Javed Ali and A R Rahman
 himself.

Shridhar Subramaniam, MD, Sony Music, said, “The A R Rahman - Shankar

been nationally and internationally acclaimed. When you add Rajnikanth’s
legendary star power to this, the result is phenomenal. The music of Sivaji
is very unique and was a massive hit in Tamil. We feel this music will
appeal to fans of this brand of cinema and music all over the world.

Sony Music is distributing the Hindi OST of Sivaji – The Boss across the
globe, and expect it to work wonders in UK, USA and Middle East – where A R

attractive by adding some bonus A R Rahman hits from blockbusters like
Lagaan, Rang De Basanti and Guru amongst others. Sony are also distributing
the much anticipated Tamil soundtrack, Vinnaithaandi varuvaaya, also by AR
 Rahman, out soon.

Sivaji – The Boss was one of the biggest blockbusters of 2007. Made on a
budget of Rs. 600 million, the movie went to gross a massive Rs. 4500

I believe in freedom of Internet ( I wouldnt like to be in China or KSA
for this reason )... It's us who need to be changed
At first , Audio CDs price should be lesser , In Bangladesh we buy a
Original Audio CD for 50Taka ( abt 30 Rs ) ... I think this is an
affordable price , I bought abt 10 CD - DVDs from Kolkata for 1000 Rs (
abt 1800 taka ), to me this is way too expensive . Bombay Dreams Audio
 Cd's Price was 400Rs :s

If u lower the price ...More people will buy the Original CDs for sure

Well said, Rajib. Prices are indeed the major factor why people go for
  cheaper or no-cost options.

And it has nothing to do with the government. It is just the music
rights holding companies who decide the prices on their own and they
can lower it if they wish.

And this CD's productions should be done in a Piracy-Proof Way , Which
is almost impossible ... Actually .. Pirates are more high-tech people
than these CD makers ... They can crack almost anything ...From
softwares to games , DVDs ..U name it ... Time to be more high-tech If u
 want to Stop Piracy

This will be impossible really. For any technology there will be
crackers who can break that technology. Just one person need to crack
that and put that on net and people will download from there, and
share the links, and then they will also upload to other places under
their own upload names to get free hits. So, controlling thru
technology is not really likely to be effective.

It is an ethical issue, I think.

Distribution is also very important ... If m crazy abt listening a ARR
Album and m not getting in my near shops .. I dont have any choice
to go for piracy ...For so many reasons Online Shopping isnt preferable
 to me .. :-)

Exactly. A hype gets developed and everyone wants to listen it fast.
So, when CDs don't become available even people who are determined on
buying legal music, can't control themselves and go to download
pirated music. So, quick availability at all places will help in
reducing the piracy.

--
And I really wonder why we can't do anything against those so many
sites that allow free download of almost anything. There has to be
some law already in effect. We just need to pull the right string.
Once faced squarely with a direct question as to why government is not
doing anything to control such sites, government will be bound to
initiate action.

Why shouldn't we try their techniques/methods.

 My suggestions:

 * Don't give domain name loosely/liberally to anyone with out

Actually, I'm fed up with all this piracy thing...I sat down and did some
basic research in the internet to understand the facts how other countries
are managing this...Fact is, inspite of being uploaded in almost all torrent
sites on day 1 of their official release, movies like Twilight and Pirates
of Carribean topped the sales charts and created records...So where does the
problem lie if there are significant number of users who are willing to buy
and own what they love? In the US and European countries, though there are
physical releases, there were also prompt digital releases online.
Initially, I was against the digital releases owing to poor quality but
later realized how much that will help the end user if you get something so
handy that can instantly play on your portables...People hear start
reviewing the album after listening to 30 sec promos! Imagine won't they buy
it digitally on day 1 to listen the whole song which is better than the
youtube versions available?? If you really need something more to enjoy in
your Hi-Fi systems, you have an option of buying a CD / DVD in addition to
it but atleast you can wait to lay your hands on the cd patiently as you
have already got something to enjoy...It's time for the music labels to act
smartly and move forward...Let's unite as a single team and pledge that we
will support every hardworking musician for all the entertainment that
we get through them...This would ideally make piracy a non-event...Clearly,

[arr] 8 top Bollywood singers for Enthiran?

2010-01-11 Thread juliencristobal
Shankar and expensive sets have always been synonymous. We have seen it before
in Anniyan and Sivaji. So, will Endhiran be left out? No!

Endhiran team is planning to create an extravagant set to shoot a song. What is
so special about this song is that director Shankar and art director Thotta
Tharani have made extra efforts. The Shankar - Thotta Tharani combo has worked
exceptionally well and Thotta Tharani is also behind the the fascinating,
dream-like set created for the song 'va ji va ji' for Sivaji.

Rumor also has it that AR Rahman has plans to rope in about eight top Bollywood
singers to croon for his music. So the set will be a complement to the song, we
hear.

[arr] Decade in Analysis-VII (Glamsham writeup on Rahman)

2010-01-11 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $

Decade in Analysis-VII

January 11, 2010 4:28:58 PM IST
Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network

Continuing with our feature decade in analysis, today's column would like to
put under spotlight A. R. Rahman, who has literally catapulted the Indian music
to an international platform and has opened the door for more Indian music
directors to aspire to go international through his music. January is also the
month in which Rahman celebrates his birthday, and therefore it is a double
whammy to interpret Rahman's rise through the decade.

A.R. Rahman: Allah Ka Banda in BANDAGI with music

He has only attained 44 years of age but has achieved so much in his field i.e.
music that by the time he decides to hang his baton he would create such
benchmarks in the field of music that it would be difficult to emulate. Such is
his prowess with the western instruments, that TIME magazine had conferred on
him the title of Mozart from Madras. He is also one of the rare music
directors who have been featured on the cover story of news magazines
underlining the fact that indeed he is a master whose feat would be a tough
task to emulate.

2009 has been the year that has emerged as triumph of his perseverance to the
cause of music. If music is creative presentation of sounds in such a manner
that the auditory nerves may be swept of the feet, Rahman has indeed become a
wizard of music. The decade that has gone by is indeed a decade in which Rahman
experimented with all kinds of sound, and there never was a year in which
Rahman's music did not make its presence in an impacted manner. The decade
started with LAGAAN where Rahman brought out sounds from the rural hinterland
of the country and also created one of the most enduring bhajans in the form of
O paalan haare, deconstructing the notion built around Rahman that he was a
music director who could bring out forgotten sounds from the Indian musical
instruments as well, as he did in this song. In fact the decade began on a
classical note for Rahman with LAGAAN and he swept all the awards that year.

LAGAAN was followed by SAATHIYA, which again set the imagination of nation on
fire with the fusion of Sanskrit shlokas to the thump of nodes of piano.
SAATHIYA brought Gulzar for the first time with Rahman and the chemistry that
was created between Rahman and Gulzar was the platform indeed that paved the
way for Oscars in SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. SAATHIYA also affirmed the reach of
Rahman to the youth of the country, as his music for this film attained immense
popularity among the youth of the country.

Rahman again returned to the folk music of the villages with SWADES followed by
WATER consolidating his position as a music director who was constantly on the
lookout for innovative sounds to mesmerize the audience and create the impact.
Indeed he set the nation on fire once again with RANG DE BASANTI whose
popularity was not only relegated to the youth but whole nation was engulfed in
its kaleidoscopic colors. Be it Loose control, or Rubaroo or for that
matter the pangs of a mother, music of RDB caught the imagination of the
country unheard off in the recent memory.

One of the specialties of Rahman has been to create music using the water as a
source or building his music around the water bodies. One wonders whether
Rahman is provided the backdrop against which he has to set the music. He
catapulted himself into the imagination of nation with his debut song Dil hi
choata sa, in ROZA, which he overhauled with Haaji Ali in FIZA and he again
showed his penchant for sounds associated with water in GURU with na na na
nana re which fetched him scores of awards once again.

Interesting pattern of Rahman's music in the decade has been his flipping
between western sounds and returning back to the Indian acoustics in contrasts.
So JODHAA AKBAR and JAANE TU YA JAANE NA followed RDB. For Rahman this was a
first large scale historical film and his music representing the period of the
Mughal era was also responsible for the immense popularity that the film
enjoyed all over the country and even outside.

Rahman also stepped into the Broadway music when he gave the music for BOMBAY
DREAMS. His association with the BOMBAY DREAMS opened up the window for him to
tell the world the immensely diversified talent that he was blessed with. Music
of DELHI-6 created another milestone for him, as he came up with one of the
most exquisite qawallis in the recent times Maula Maula. Genda Phool from the
same album was an example of the Indian hip hop set to the tune of classical
folk, and while the film was not a big hit, its music gave his fans a choice to
relive in the glory of old Delhi.

The decade came to an end with a fitting triumphant for him in the form of an
Oscar for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. No wonder he has been awarded as the

I think the criticism is highly unwarranted and unnecessary. If Karthik says
that he buys CDs when available we should respect his views

All of us are keen to listen to ARR's and good music from other MDs in the form

Idle speculation about Karthik's reviews using cheap quality illegally
downloaded songs just wastes everyone's time.

I think pricing not that much an issue, give and take 50 rupees. In hyderabad i
have seen audio cds being launched for 35 rupees.

Rahman's tamil cds used to cost higer than its telugu dubbed versions. But
piracy prevailed equally high in both language versions.

I think music companies wud cash in on a certain premium when its rahman.or
someone big.

That said, some guys have tried this so called copy proof cds. I remember the
disc for kabhi alvida na kehna said it so on the inlay card.

Nothing worked.

Its an issue of attitudes. A small compund wall does mean u can jump over. Its
still a wall and signifies a rule.

I am with Karthik here. I guess as long as you end up buying the original I
don't see any harm in downloading mp3's available on the net. Most ARR fans
(including Karthik) are crazy to own the CD sleeve and at the same time
restless to listen to the songs ASAP.
As far as the quality of these mp3s are concerned, I downloaded some at 320
(odd) kbps). that is pretty good to guage ARR's work on an album.

[arr] My Complete Review of VTV's Music

2010-01-11 Thread ichord
First of all, I do not support piracy. I wanted to wait until Tuesday before
hearing the songs and eventually writing a review, but the weaker part of me
got the upper hand this time and I caved in. Please forgive me. I assure you
that I did order the CD from Amazon and awaiting that in the mail.

If there's a distinct trend that I see in ARR's music over time, it's his
reduced emphasis on musical adventurism and acrobatics and increased emphasis
on subtle musical forms within a composition, often perceived subjectively as
not living up to his own standards. I don't agree with that notion since
it's ARR who recreates his own standards with each release, just like
destroying his own ego before a compositional session. The burden of
responsibility to recognize this is up to the listener, who may be challenged
and confounded by expectations and biases, which is normal and natural. Again,
these are trends only and just from my observational standpoint...nothing is
black and white or exclusionary. This trend may be a function of two forces:
1)Age (emphasizing more of a gestaltic perspective) 2) Progressive evolution as
part of a unique artist whose mindset is bent on conceptual expansion and
really trying hard to avoid being typecasted, escaping from his own set trails
to form new and distinct roads. The music of VTV is a major step in AR's
evolutionary process as an artist who's never content with the status quo, or
even his own previous success. Remember, it's the artist over the entertainer,
and in VTV, it's the pure artist within ARR, even beyond musician, that is in
the driver's seat. I will not comment on the lyrics since I don't understand
Tamil.

1) Omanna Penne:
Steady and soothing.a composition that oozes with spiritualness and
introspection. I love how AR juxtaposes the Western rhythms with the Carnatic
raagas first by the female voice, and weaving throughout the stylistic
Nadaswaram, whose roots are deeply carnatic, but expressed so universally in
this track. Wonderful singing by Benny and the Nadaswaram ending is surely a
page from the Rehna Tu continuum outro. Nothing fancy in this composition, but
the feeling left behind is extrenmely elevating and cleansing. Fantastic
start. (8/10)

2) Anbil Avan:
ARR at his playful best. He must have had a lot of fun putting this track
together. There is nothing heavy or mindblowing about this track, but what
makes it work for me is the joyful innocence in the melody and the very
interesting sonic arrangements using a Shehnai type sound juxtaposed with a
church organ sound. The musical interlude that has this also has some very
nice, quick chord progressions that defy banality. The melody sticks easy and
would be a fun song to dance with. (7/10)

3) Vinnathaandi Varuvaayaa:
Wow..what a minimalistic impact! Minimalistic impact is something that I
have been missing from Rahman's ouevre in recent films, but here it is, in its
full glory and form. Using a minimalistic sound template for a title song is
quite bold and outside the box, but boy does it work for me!!! The acoustic
strings (guitar? harp?) along with vibes and small bells create such a unique,
peaceful ambience in this song that transports me into a dreamlike world.
Beautiful string additions in the mid section only add depth to amazing vocals,
chords, and heartfelt emotions in this gem, but likely to be underrated track.
Delicate, subtle, dreamy, ambient, soft, restrained, soothing, warming.I
can go on and on. Again, a track doesn't have to be complex and
adventursome to be powerfulthis is the genius of ARhe can create such a
powerful ambience using minimal quantity. (8/10)

4) Hosana:
There is no other composer in India who can arrange better than AR. In this
song, many of AR's strengths are showcased.sound structure, layered, thick,
yet uncluttered arrangements, symphonic textures, haunting melody, soothing
ambience. The sound layers are so clean and crispthat beautiful strumming
acoustic guitar is so nice!!! Also worthy of metion is the high toned Scottish
flavored flute and the subtle mandolin rhythms in sync with the main rhythms,
punctuated by the pulsating string sections. The female choir with the angelic
expression is one of the most beautiful choir sounds I've heard. This song
sticks to you and won't let go. A complete masterpiece IMO that is one of the
best songs that ARR has composed in recent years. (9/10)

5) Kunnukkul Kannai
Another playful techno oriented track with some pleasing electronic
arrangements. The unique feature of this track for me are the string quartet
type rhythmic accents throughout that give this youth song a very Western
classical feel. Relatively simple by composition and sound, but again, a nice
dance number with good melody. Rahman not living up to his standards on this
one? Well, that's up to you to decide, but it's an enjoyable one for me,

Re: [arr] Re: VTV CD Cover

2010-01-11 Thread Naveen Naushad
No it is not.

Audio CD stores files in raw WAV format. MP3 takes this raw file and
compresses it to reduce file size. There are 2 types of compression
techniques. Lossless and Lossy. MP3 uses lossy compression algorithm, which
means it will discard some bits of data from the audio file while encoding
to create a smaller sized file. If you convert an MP3 file back to WAV, the
difference in quality will be huge.

I am sure you have used ZIP compression system on various files. Like for
example zipping a Word document (DOC) file to email it to someone and then
that receiver unzipping it to get the original DOC file. That happens
because ZIP is a lossless compression format.

Imagine if ZIP used lossy system like MP3. You will send a letter as zipped
DOC file to a friend. He will unzip and open the DOC file only to find half
the words missing in the letter. But he will still be able to understand the
contents of the letter because he can easily fill up the blanks with
probable words. But that doesn't mean he is reading the letter as intended
by you. In the end he may understand the letter but it may not contain the
same words you wrote before zipping it.

This is what happens with songs on MP3. You will listen to MP3 and believe
you heard the song. But when it is composed by someone like AR who arranges
multiple layers with minutest detailing, chances are you will miss a good
amount of detail just because MP3 as a format is not capable of preserving
it. And I am not talking about just 128 kbps MP3 here. The maximum bit rate
attainable for MP3 is 320 kbps and yet it will not come anywhere near the
quality of original CD.

Therefore always listen to songs in original CDs, like the way the composer
intended it to. Don't let MP3 decide which part of the song you should
listen and which you shouldn't. Don't allow MP3 to take away all the joy of
listening to those soulful compositions, that too for a measly Rs. 99.

And if you are like me who listens on PC and is lazy to put in CDs every
time you want to listen to, here is what you should do.

   1. Buy the original CD first (there is no legal alternative to this).
   2. Rip the songs from CD into lossless FLAC format.
   3. Listen to them in your favorite software music player. Some of them
support FLAC by default, while others have free plugin to enable playback.
   4. Rediscover what you have been missing all those years on those CD
   quality MP3 songs.

For those who are wondering how to convert an audio CD to FLAC file, here is
a good pictorial guide.

Re: [arr] Re: VTV CD Cover

2010-01-11 Thread Neevan
Hey guys as an Audio Engineering student i
just wanna clear the air on this topic on audio bit rates.

The bitrate for audio cds according to the Red Book Standard is calculated as
follows=

The bitrate of audio CD is calculated by muliplying the sampling rate by the
resolution by the
number of channels:

44.1 kHz X 16 bit X 2 chan. = 1,411 kbps (Kilo Bits Per Second)

So pls do not be mistaken that 128kbps is CD quality. Also Wav and AIFF are
uncompressed loseless
audio formats as compared to MP3.

I hope u guys have a better idea about bitrates for audio CDs now.

Regards
Neevan

RE: [arr] VTV CD Cover

2010-01-11 Thread wiredbeats .
Not that u shud try, but when u find lossless flac file, thats 'original'.

Even lossless wav is not lossless.

then u need to download each flac file, arrange them in an order and burn them
directly to a cd dat. Into a good quality blank cd-r.

Too much pain, not worth it. Better buy CDs :)

Re: [arr] Re: VTV Songs on the Net

2010-01-11 Thread Arijit Debnath
In US or UK once you start downloading a new movie/album from Torrents, in
90% cases you'll receive a call from your 'Internet Provider' saying it's a
violation of law and you'll get warning.

But it's not happening for any Indian Movie or music album due to
unawareness of the owner of the rights. If they start doing this in India
and abroad piracy can be handled. For that 'internet providers' in India
also should be well equipped...

Otherwise now a days the entire CD in original WAV format is available
everywhere..so one shouldn't be bothered about Quality to buy the
original...

Arijit

2010/1/11 Madhavan Rajan rsamadhu2...@gmail.com

If you really need something more to enjoy in
your Hi-Fi systems, you have an option of buying a CD / DVD in addition to
it but atleast you can wait to lay your hands on the cd patiently as you
have already got something to enjoy...It's time for the music labels to act
smartly and move forward...Let's unite as a single team and pledge that we
will support every hardworking musician for all the entertainment that
we get through them...This would ideally make piracy a non-event...Clearly,
It's a war against Pirates and Music lovers...Now you decide who should win!

I used Nokia Music Store to buy few tracks but it is all DRM protected and
will not play other than your Nokia systems.

I never said I do not download via torrents at all - but that's not the ethics
question here - the question is, do you buy the darn CD?

There are other ways one could procure audio titles, beyond streaming sites,
illegal downloads and CD purchases, which you may not even be aware. Such
opportunities are earned, not purchased.

My VTV review after 5-6 hearings:

As I am not fluent in Tamil, I am not going to comment on the lyrics.

 1) Omana Penne. This song starts beautifully with small bells followed by
heavy bass. The composition seems really simple at the beginning but it's
really difficult one to compose. Benny's voice is modulated and it adds to
create a very unique feeling to it. No other than Benny would have been able
to sing this song giving the same feeling (RnB style). However if you listen
carefully you know that you are listening to an indian song due to the
nadaswaram that is played from 0:45.
A.R.Rahman has mixed a lot of different rhythms that makes this song unique.
Kalyani makes her apparition in the of the middle song singing in Malayalam
in a classical way: the listener is sent back to the 60's but modern rhythm
are still being played. It's a superb anachronism. Benny vocal is back and
more weird sounds are joining the song. Later, a short nadaswaram interlude
is played quickly join by this modulate Benny! 10/10

 2) What type of song is that? A techno/electro track? A semi-classical song?
Who cares, the sound is unique!
Anbil Avan starts with some notes played in a synthesizer that are quickly
blend with traditionnal drums and choir. Devan starts the song with: anbil
avan followed by very short sentences that leave a great effect on the
listener. Chinmayi sings a few lines but the moment both Devan and Chinmayi
sing together is very pleasant to the ears (1:24-1:29). After a brief humming
from Chinmayi, from nowhere a wedding march is played by a pipe organ.
Immediately after, the traditional south Indian nadaswaram is heard. Where
are we in a church for a Christian wedding or a temple for a Hindu one? It's
 up to the listener imagination…
The song is very innovative and the mood set by the song is totally different
from the other songs. A feel good song all the way thanks to A.R.Rahman
catchy tune. Listening to Devan and Chinmayi (who at times sounds like
Vasundhra Das) I am sure they had fun while recording the song! 9.5/10

 3) Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. This song seems to be played in someone 's dream
who imagines his beloved coming to him walking down a grey sky. The minimal
use of music instruments helps to underline Karthik's magnificent vocal in
this soft and romantic song that will have the same effect on the listener as
A.R.Rahman `s En Swase Kaatre title track. The light guitar notes are
enchanting. A.R.Rahman hasn't used the guitar so beautifully since Vellai
Pukkal (Kannathil Muthamittal) and Khamosh Raat (Takshak) but the best part
of the song is between 1:37-2:21 : pure divine! A special mention as well for
the back vocalist who compliments Karthik's voice perfectly. Flip side: too
 short!! 10/10

 4) Hosanna. This song is my favourite it is what we can call vintage
A.R.Rahman. When I saw on arrahman.com a few weeks back that this song was
sung by Vijay Prakash I was upset as I loved Srinivas rendition seen on
youtube during the London music launch . However, Vijay is just as good as
Srinivas! So what is so special about this song? EVERYTHING! What a song! A
flute here, a violin and cello there, plus a guitar on the other hand and
some pre-recorded rhythms create an heavenly atmosphere. No wonder the song
is called Hosanna. The song progression is also very impressive from a very
few instruments with Vijay Vocal singing: En ithayam, unaithaan norunggave,
En maru ithayam, tharuven nee udaikave the song ends with the same lines but
an explosion of sounds tell you that you have reached Heaven (is the bell at
 the very end a clue?).
The vocals are equally good! Suzanne is at her seductive best (I love the way
the sang Dreams on Fire in Slumdog Millionaire) with some very relaxing
humming that invite you to some peaceful place (2:31- 3:16) . Vijay Prakash
sounds very different when he sings En ithayam, unaithaan norunggave, En maru

Thanks a lot Naveen.. Much appreciated.

On Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 10:11 AM, Naveen Naushad navee...@gmail.com wrote:

For those who are wondering how to convert an audio CD to FLAC file, here
 is a good pictorial guide.

assure you that I did order the CD from Amazon and awaiting that in the
 mail.

If there's a distinct trend that I see in ARR's music over time, it's his
reduced emphasis on musical adventurism and acrobatics and increased
emphasis on subtle musical forms within a composition, often perceived
subjectively as not living up to his own standards. I don't agree with
that notion since it's ARR who recreates his own standards with each
release, just like destroying his own ego before a compositional session.
The burden of responsibility to recognize this is up to the listener, who
may be challenged and confounded by expectations and biases, which is normal
and natural. Again, these are trends only and just from my observational
standpoint...nothing is black and white or exclusionary. This trend may be a
function of two forces: 1)Age (emphasizing more of a gestaltic perspective)
 2) Progressive evolution as part of a unique artist whose mindset is bent on
conceptual expansion and really trying hard to avoid being typecasted,
escaping from his own set trails to form new and distinct roads. The music
of VTV is a major step in AR's evolutionary process as an artist who's never
content with the status quo, or even his own previous success. Remember,
it's the artist over the entertainer, and in VTV, it's the pure artist
within ARR, even beyond musician, that is in the driver's seat. I will not
comment on the lyrics since I don't understand Tamil.

 1) Omanna Penne:
Steady and soothing.a composition that oozes with spiritualness and
introspection. I love how AR juxtaposes the Western rhythms with the
Carnatic raagas first by the female voice, and weaving throughout the
stylistic Nadaswaram, whose roots are deeply carnatic, but expressed so
universally in this track. Wonderful singing by Benny and the Nadaswaram
ending is surely a page from the Rehna Tu continuum outro. Nothing fancy in
this composition, but the feeling left behind is extrenmely elevating and
 cleansing. Fantastic start.

The melody sticks easy
and would be a fun song to dance with. (7/10)

 3) Vinnathaandi Varuvaayaa:
Wow..what a minimalistic impact! Minimalistic impact is something that
I have been missing from Rahman's ouevre in recent films, but here it is, in
its full glory and form. Using a minimalistic sound template for a title
song is quite bold and outside the box, but boy does it work for me!!! The
acoustic strings (guitar? harp?) along with vibes and small bells create
such a unique, peaceful ambience in this song that transports me into a
dreamlike world. Beautiful string additions in the mid section only add
depth to amazing vocals, chords, and heartfelt emotions in this gem, but
likely to be underrated track. Delicate, subtle, dreamy, ambient, soft,
restrained, soothing, warming.I can go on and on. Again, a track
doesn't have to be complex and adventursome to be powerfulthis is the
genius of ARhe can create such a powerful ambience using minimal
 quantity. (8/10)

 4) Hosana:
There is no other composer in India who can arrange better than AR. In this
song, many of AR's strengths are showcased.sound structure, layered,
thick, yet uncluttered arrangements, symphonic textures, haunting melody,
soothing ambience. The sound layers are so clean and crispthat beautiful
strumming acoustic guitar is so nice!!! Also worthy of metion is the high
toned Scottish flavored flute and the subtle mandolin rhythms in sync with
the main rhythms, punctuated by the pulsating string sections. The female
choir with the angelic expression is one of the most beautiful choir sounds
I've heard. This song sticks to you and won't let go. A complete masterpiece
IMO that is one of the best songs that ARR has composed in recent years.
 (9/10)

 5) Kunnukkul Kannai
Another playful techno oriented track with some pleasing electronic
arrangements. The unique feature of this track for me are the string quartet
type rhythmic accents throughout that give this youth song a

The singing in VTV is absolutely top notch, a point that I mistakenly excluded
from my comp review earlier. From Benny to Shreya, to our own ARR, to Karthik,
to Alphonse, to Naresh, Chinmayi.all of themabsolutely one of the best
singing performances in an album I've heard in a long time. My previous review
focused on the music, but the singing needed to be mentioned too. In fact, I
would say that Shreya's singing is a career highlight for her, and what can be
said about Alphonse? Is this guy for real? Aaromale is awesomely sung!!!
