[arr] Rediff reviews VTV music - Vintage Rahman
http://movies.rediff.com/report/2010/jan/13/south-tamil-music-review-vinnaithaandi-varuvaaya.htm No other album has raised such high expectations or created quite this much frenzy among eager fans like Escape Artists' Motion Pictures' Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya (Will You Cross the Skies for Me?). The Tamil movie has everything going for it namely Gautam Menon as its director, Academy Award winner A R Rahman [ Images ] as its composer, and lyricists like Thamarai, Kalyani Menon and Kaithapram. With Simbhu and Trisha [ Images ] as the lead pair, VTV has been making headlines ever since it was launched as a touching love story with music set to blitzkrieg everyone's heart. Add to that is the fact this is the composer's return to Tamil after his Oscar success. So, does the collection live up to the hype? Let's find out. A guitar strums lazily, reminding you very faintly of the old Wild West, and then morphs into something that might be an ancient native Indian chant -- that's Aaromale, sung by Alphonse. The lyrics in Malayalam seem to form a neat accompaniment to the general structure of the song. There's a soothing, gentle feel to the number, an experience that lets you sink into it. The song proper starts some time later, with a faint strain of violins somewhere far off. Even as Alphonse's voice rises to higher octaves, the refrain hugs the original depths, supplying a many-layered experience. An intense number, this. You sit blinking when you listen to Anbil Avan as you're transported straight to a church choir until you realize that the song, rendered by Devan Ekambaram and Chinmayi, is actually a conglomerate that describes two kinds of religious weddings. The lyrics are all about eternal bonding, unending love and essentially the basics of wedding vows. It's got a peppy feel, full of happy anticipation, an eagerness to seek out the next heady experience, supplemented by synthesized instrumental arrangements. It seems a little like the Ibiza number -- but you're too carried away by its zeal to notice that until the end. On a half romantic, half mournful note, with a flute interlude begins possibly the most publicized number of the album: Hosanna by Blaaze, Vijay Prakash and Suzanne. The musical arrangement somehow takes you right back to the early days of ARR until you realize which number the refrain, Hosanna, bears a striking resemblance to: Only Time, by Enya. The rap segment closely follows the tune as well; the lyrics celebrate the lover pining away for his beloved until his world shrinks to just her. There's no denying that it's romantic what with church bells pealing, complicated violin arrangements and a chorus which all reach a crescendo in the finale. It's a pleasant listen but still seems inspired. The violin rendition in the first few seconds of Kannukkul Kannai is enticing and the number itself, rendered by Naresh Iyer in a fast- and almost breathless manner that aims to bring the heady feeling of being in love. Aside from the violin segment, though, you feel like this is a musical arrangement you've heard often in Rahman's earlier albums, and faithfully mimicked by others following in his footsteps. In terms of ARR numbers, it's pretty run-of-the-mill. Shreya Goshal's melodious voice begins Mannippaya with anguish, and it morphs gradually into a more gentle melody. Remorse and forgiveness are the prevalent themes of this number, and the soothing tones suit the sentiment, with ARR himself providing the accompaniment. Appealing, yes, but the lyrics have precedence in this song and the tune seems to have been composed to accommodate it. Even the flute segment reminds you of the signature tune of Titanic [ Images ]. The kural couplets that suddenly appear take you by surprise. They're a pleasant listen -- and then it's back to the meandering tune. Kalyani Menon and Benny Dhayal begin Omanappenne, which seems like a fusion between western and classical music with a violin suddenly launching into a classical melody at certain points. And that's the essence of the whole song: a gentle composition which attempts to crossover from one genre to another, while a nadaswaram makes a not unwelcome appearance to add a different flavour to the proceedings. Having said that, we've heard many such numbers from ARR himself, and with more variation. Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, accompanied by guitar strings and rendered by Karthik, comes in a different fashion altogether. It's slow, introspective, and the general tone doesn't seem to care much whether it hits the highs and lows of notes in an approved manner, which is actually a plus. The tune moves from contemplative to contentment to interrogative, and that seems to be the essence of the number itself: all the different emotions encompassed in one question. It isn't possible to toss an opinion of an A R Rahman album based on just one listen. This composer has a talent for coming up with numbers that grow on you. Lyricist

Rafid --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, ichord purevibz@ wrote: After some corrections and additions: If there's a distinct trend that I see in ARR's music over time, it's his reduced emphasis on musical adventurism and acrobatics and increased emphasis on subtle musical forms within a composition, often perceived subjectively as not living up to his own standards. I don't agree with that notion since it's ARR who recreates his own standards with each release, just like destroying his own ego before a compositional session. The burden of responsibility to recognize this is up to the listener, who may be challenged and confounded by expectations and biases, which is normal and natural. Again, these are trends only and just from my observational standpoint...nothing is black and white or exclusionary. This trend may be a function of two forces: 1)Age (emphasizing more of a gestalt perspective) 2) Progressive evolution as part of a unique artist whose mindset is bent on conceptual expansion and really trying hard to avoid being typecasted, escaping from his own set trails to form new and distinct roads. The music of VTV is a major step in AR's evolutionary process as an artist who's never content with the status quo, or even his own previous success. Remember, it's the artist over the entertainer, and in VTV, it's the pure artist within ARR, even beyond musician, that is in the driver's seat. I will not comment on the lyrics since I don't understand Tamil. 1) Omanna Penne: Steady and soothing.a composition that oozes with spiritualism and introspection. I love how AR juxtaposes the Western rhythms with the Carnatic raagas first by the female voice, and weaving throughout the stylistic Nadaswaram, whose roots are deeply Carnatic, but expressed so universally in this track. Wonderful singing by Benny and the Nadaswaram ending is surely a page from the Rehna Tu continuum outro. Nothing fancy in this composition, but the feeling left behind is extremely elevating and cleansing. Fantastic start. (8/10) 2) Anbil Avan: ARR at his playful best. He must have had a lot of fun putting this track together. There is nothing heavy or mind blowing about this track, but what makes it work for me is the joyful innocence in the melody and the very interesting sonic arrangements using a Shehnai type sound juxtaposed with a church organ sound. The musical interlude that has this also has some very nice, quick chord progressions that defy banality. The melody sticks easy and would be a fun song to dance with. (7/10) 3) Vinnathaandi Varuvaayaa: Wow..what a minimalistic impact! Minimalistic impact is something that I have been missing from Rahman's oeuvre in recent films, but here it is, in its full glory and form. Using a minimalistic sound template for a title song is quite bold and outside the box, but boy does it work for me!!! The acoustic strings (guitar? harp?) along with vibes and small bells create such a unique, peaceful ambiance in this song that transports me into a dreamlike world. Beautiful string additions in the mid section only add depth to amazing vocals, chords, and heartfelt emotions in this gem, but likely to be underrated track. Delicate, subtle, dreamy, ambient, soft, restrained, soothing, warming.I can go on and on. Again, a track doesn't have to be complex and adventuresome to be powerfulthis is the genius of ARhe can create such a powerful ambience using minimal quantity. (8/10) 4) Hosana: There is no other composer in India who can arrange better than AR. In this song, many of AR's strengths are showcased.sound structure, layered, thick, yet uncluttered arrangements, symphonic textures, haunting melody, soothing ambiance. The sound layers are so clean and crispthat beautiful strumming acoustic guitar is so

Good thoughts by the person, and unfortunately true. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/12/science/12tier.html?hpw “An intelligent person feels guilty for downloading music without paying the musician, but they use this free-open-culture ideology to cover it,” “The same thing could be said if you hacked into a bank and just added money to your online account,” he writes. “The problem in each case is not that you stole from a specific person but that you undermined the artificial scarcities that allow the economy to function.” In theory, public officials could deter piracy by stiffening the penalties, but they’re aware of another crucial distinction between online piracy and house burglary: There are a lot more homeowners than burglars, but there are a lot more consumers of digital content than producers of it. The result is a problem a bit like trying to stop a mob of looters. Re: [arr] Aaromale...just goin crazy!!!(Raga Bageshree)
You are absolutely right Swaps.. The hook line is indeed Bhageshree. And I am not surprised. Because this song is in Malayalam. And usually, music in Kerala or say Malayalam musicians have been using lot of Hindustani music. even the great Swathi Thirunal was equally proficient in Hindustani and Carnatic genres. if we study the film music, even composers such as Raveendran, Mohana Sitara have used lot of Hindustani Music. Composers from Tamil and Telugu regions too have used Hindustani, but comparatively, lesser than Malayalam counterparts. This is just my observation and I could be wrong too. Bhageshree is a Hindustani Raaga and using it for malayalam lyrics doesnt surprise me. What is absolutely surprising is the treatment given to this song. Psychedelic Rock meeting Hindustani idiom hook-line. I want to ask ARR if this was his tribute to Pink Floyd or Mahavishnu Orchestra :) Regards Kamal Aakarsh Vishnubhotla. http://kamal-aakarsh.blogspot.com --- On Wed, 1/13/10, ~ s...@ps ~ swaps15...@yahoo.com wrote: From: ~ s...@ps ~ swaps15...@yahoo.com Subject: Re: [arr] Aaromale...just goin crazy!!!(Raga Bageshree) To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Date: Wednesday, January 13, 2010, 5:55 PM Yes..the entire song is based on Bageshree...Bageshree has a prominent emphasis on 'Dhaivat'..omitting 'Pancham' 'Rishabh' in the aarohi..Sa Ga Ma Dha Ni SaSa Ni Dha Ma (Pa) Dha Ga (Re) Sa In Aaromale,ARR hs used 'Audav Bageshree' in most places;i.e, just employin 5 notes of the aarohi...the chorus bit 'Susthi susthi sumuhurtham' is based on the same Raga..Dun think its Bhimpalas/Abheri, as Bhimpalas has a strong 'Pancham'... .Listen 2 the bandish which Hari hs sung in L.A.concert b4 'Pachchai nirame'...u' ll relate 2 wut i m sayin...(though 'Pachchai nirame' is more Bhimpalasi)This is my opinion... [arr] A focus on the song Manipaya
I am very pleased to see this song being highly rated here in this group, coming in at number 2 in terms of favorite songs in my poll of fav VTV songs. The high ratings are a bit surprising in a way because the song's melodic structure is very unconventional and drawn out, hard to follow compared to most film song melodies, and appears to meander without direction, even though it doesn't (a criticism noted in many reviews). There are also not too many catchy hooks in the melody, even though the melody itself is quite beautiful...very much akin to a Western theatrical play song you might hear on stage. On the other side, the high ratings here in this group are not surprising since I feel most of us are more open minded about different melodic variations and song structures than the average person out there; we being passionate Rahman fans, are perhaps more receptive to such experimentations and give it a chance. Actually, this song requires a lot of patience and time...it requires you to slow down your listening pace and be more in the musical moment at any given time...demanding that you pay closer attention to the direction and tone of the melody and its accompanying, subtle harmonic structures. As I alluded to in my review, this song falls more in line with an artistic oriented composition and less in line with an entertaining oriented composition with higher values of aestheticism and abstractness. But the above mentioned points may not be received by a lot of people, thus many brushing off the song as being too bland and directionless, lacking spark, energy, intensity. But, really, the true beauty is in the subtlety, under the surface, if you're willing, patient, and open enough to experience it. It is truly a growing song that requires multiple exposures to appreciate it. It definitely took time to grow on me and I'm still discovering more of its beauty with each listen, uncovering subtle instruments here and there, a chord progression that I first missed, etc. etc. I'm so glad and grateful that AR likes to experiment like this...giving us something new and fresh each time, at the risk of initial resistance and hesitation due to the time needed to accomodate to such novelty and originality. That quality to me is a the hallmark of a true genius, one who is daring enough to push the envelope and defy traditional forms, yet being very confident in its execution. It's what keeps AR so successful, relevant, and vibrant as he moves further in his career. Check out the ending with Shreya's soft voice and AR's delicate piano touches..just class, PURE CLASS!!! A truly special song full of feeling, innocence, sincerity that I will cherish forever

Delicate, subtle, dreamy, ambient, soft, restrained, soothing, warming. I can go on and on. Again, a track doesn't have to be complex and adventuresome to be powerful this is the genius of ARhe can create such a powerful ambience using minimal quantity. (8/10) 4) Hosana: There is no other composer in India who can arrange better than AR. In this song, many of AR's strengths are showcased... ..sound structure, layered, thick, yet uncluttered arrangements, symphonic textures, haunting melody, soothing ambiance. The sound layers are so clean and crispthat beautiful strumming acoustic guitar is so nice!!! Also worthy of metion is the high toned Scottish

[arr] Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya: Vintage Rahman
*Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya*: Vintage Rahman No other album has raised such high expectations or created quite this much frenzy among eager fans like Escape Artists' Motion Pictures' *Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya *(Will You Cross the Skies for Me?). The Tamil movie has everything going for it namely Gautam Menon as its director, Academy Award winner A R Rahman [ Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=a+r+rahman ] as its composer, and lyricists like Thamarai, Kalyani Menon and Kaithapram. With Simbhu and Trisha [ Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=trisha ] as the lead pair, *VTV* has been making headlines ever since it was launched as a touching love story with music set to blitzkrieg everyone's heart. Add to that is the fact this is the composer's return to Tamil after his Oscar success. So, does the collection live up to the hype? Let's find out. A guitar strums lazily, reminding you very faintly of the old Wild West, and then morphs into something that might be an ancient native Indian chant -- that's *Aaromale*, sung by Alphonse. You sit blinking when you listen to *Anbil Avan* as you're transported straight to a church choir until you realize that the song, rendered by Devan Ekambaram and Chinmayi, is actually a conglomerate that describes two kinds of religious weddings. The lyrics are all about eternal bonding, unending love and essentially the basics of wedding vows. It's got a peppy feel, full of happy anticipation, an eagerness to seek out the next heady experience, supplemented by synthesized instrumental arrangements. It seems a little like the *Ibiza* number -- but you're too carried away by its zeal to notice that until the end. On a half romantic, half mournful note, with a flute interlude begins possibly the most publicized number of the album: *Hosanna* by Blaaze, Vijay Prakash and Suzanne. The musical arrangement somehow takes you right back to the early days of ARR until you realize which number the refrain, *Hosanna*, bears a striking resemblance to: *Only Time*, by Enya. The violin rendition in the first few seconds of *Kannukkul Kannai* is enticing and the number itself, rendered by Naresh Iyer in a fast- and almost breathless manner that aims to bring the heady feeling of being in love. Aside from the violin segment, though, you feel like this is a musical arrangement you've heard often in Rahman's earlier albums, and faithfully mimicked by others following in his footsteps. In terms of ARR numbers, it's pretty run-of-the-mill. Shreya Goshal's melodious voice begins *Mannippaya* with anguish, and it morphs gradually into a more gentle melody. Remorse and forgiveness are the prevalent themes of this number, and the soothing tones suit the sentiment, with ARR himself providing the accompaniment. Appealing, yes, but the lyrics have precedence in this song and the tune seems to have been composed to accommodate it. Even the flute segment reminds you of the signature tune of *Titanic [ Images http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=titanic ]*. The*kural* couplets that suddenly appear take you by surprise. They're a pleasant listen -- and then it's back to the meandering tune. Kalyani Menon and Benny Dhayal begin *Omanappenne*, which seems like a fusion between western and classical music with a violin suddenly launching into a classical melody at certain points. And that's the essence of the whole song: a gentle composition which attempts to crossover from one genre to another, while a *nadaswaram* makes a not unwelcome appearance to add a different flavour to the proceedings. Having said that, we've heard many such numbers from ARR himself, and with more variation. *Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya*, accompanied by guitar strings and rendered by Karthik, comes in a different fashion altogether. It isn't possible to toss an opinion of an A R Rahman

What is artistic liberty? It's a type of freedom of expression.. of thoughts, ideas, concepts, emotions unbounded by dogma, static rules, and artificial boundaries, both within and without the individual expressing such a freedom. It's a gift of nature, an affirmation of our humanity, and a vehicle of creative expression that serves to communicate the deepest part of ourselves and to help interpret our world aesthetically through an unknown, undiscovered canvas of free ideas and concepts that are out there, and yet within us at the same time. Music as an artform is a medium of this expression among a spectral array of various nonverbal communication forms, yet, to me, embodies a holistic attribute more than other art forms that helpes to synthesize the senses and the spirit. The power of focused sound, positively intended vibrations on the molecular level indeed serve many positive purposes through its recreative invention and various sonic avatars. It it we, the receivers, interpreters, and listeners, through the magic of our neural makeup, who are divinely gifted and bestowed the ability to create, invent, and magnify from this aural sea of sound consciousness that embodies our very existence from conception to death. When I listen to a contextually unconventional music album like VTV, the concept of artistic liberty superimposed on the idea of musical freedom immediately strikes me as a divine gift, that only very few in this world are able to communicate so movingly and convincingly. No doubt, Rahman's music has always been about unbounded freedom from the confines of sound limitation and conventional rules, aided by a myriad of technological tools. It is to the fortune of Rahman that he arrived at musical time when his own creative intentions met technological upswelling at a very important crossroad in a momentous part of musical history. Yes, it was written, and yes, it was intended. I celebrate VTV not only because it pleases me aesthetically and challenges my intellect, stimulating both left and right hemispheres into a holistic phenomenon, but also for what it represents; another fulcrum of artistic liberty and musical freedom from a man, one of the greatest musicians ever, whose creative intentions are only pure and loving. The larger picture, the unbridled privilge of being a witness and recepient to this special expression calls out loud and clear to me and I am listening... listening. ...listening . __ Looking for the perfect gift? Three songs were also screened on the occasion, for which Kamal Haasan was the special guest. The stylistic Nadaswaram adds a cleansing feel to the song. The ending Nadaswaram seems to be an extension of 'Rehna Tu' from *Delhi 6*. Such criticism tells me that ARR has tried something new that our ears had never heard so far and thus we are not attuned to hear and internalize it in first few hearings. And it has been proved times and again in last 18 years, that such songs which got criticized on the first few hearings got most beloved and most popular because our slow minds take time to understand what a genius called ARR has done and then we internalize it and appreciate it and keep on liking the same for ever. And it surprises me that some diehard fan of ARR will surely come up criticizing some song within a few hours of its release, forgetting his experience on 1000+ songs when he criticized something first and started liking it later on. This time it is RaijenB! Let's wait for the song to grow on raijen. pls use old singers like sreenivas etc. pls dnt use blazee#39;s rap in every album it looks similar. a different instrument to make it sound like nadaswaram I thought so too, but I'm not sure. In fact, at first I thought it was a sample triggered by the continuum, but it'd require tremendous control over the fingerboard to make it sound so expressive. It could just be the placement in the mix that is making it sound the way it does. Rahman has done that on many instances in the past. Re: [arr] VTV review.
I don't have an issue with Karthik downloading songs from the internet to write the review. What I have a problem with is his writing the review even before the actual release of the CD. It's unfair to the composer. It's unethical. There are certain people who can be considered opinion leaders and their opinion influences the purchasing decision of a large number of people, who are usually fence sitters. Karthik is a opinion leader, whether he likes it or not or whether he deserves it or not. By writing the review, people, who otherwise would have bought the CD and maybe decided on their own if the music was good or bad, could now ignore the product. Whether we like it or not, sales play a big role in a song becoming a hit or not. Also, by writing the review he has made more people aware that the songs are available for illegal download. Not all would have the high moral values of Karthik and buy the CD later on. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Vinayakam Murugan mvinaya...@... wrote: Let the person who hasn't sinned cast the first stone. The album has seven songs composed by the Mozart of Madras, A.R. Rahman. Let's take a look at the album: 'Omanna Penne' is a beautiful blend of Western rhythms and the Carnatic ragas. The stylistic Nadaswaram adds a cleansing feel to the song. The ending Nadaswaram seems to be an extension of 'Rehna Tu' from *Delhi 6*. The music has been wonderfully rendered by Benny Dayal and Kalyani Menon. 'Anbil Avan' by Devan Ekambaram and Chinmayi has some joyful melody feel. The music has some very nice and quick chord progressions. 'Vinnathaandi Varuvaayaa' is brilliant. The title song has some beautiful strings, amazing vocals, chords, heartfelt emotions, delicate and subtle music. Great singing by Karthik. 'Hosana' -- the much-awaited song -- no one can do it better than Rahman. The Scottish flavoured flute and the subtle mandolin rhythms makes the music so crisp and clear. This is definitely a masterpiece and one of the best songs from Rahman in recent times. Vijay Prakash, Suzzanne and Blaze have rendered their voices for the song. 'Kannukkul Kannai' has a Western classical feel but seems to be a little disappointing. 'Mannipaaya' is a romantic duet by Shreyal Ghosal and A.R. Rahman. Get ready to experience some breathtaking melody, sophisticated arrangements, subtle symphonic artistry. One of the album's highlights for sure, and we hope it will be a visual treat too. 'Aaromale' is a brilliant masterpiece from the music genius. Sensual, stylistic, clean acoustic guitar with mindblowing vocals by Alphonse. The vocal fade at the ending is simply brilliant. Watch out for this at the top of the charts. On the whole, *VTV* is well beyond expectations; it would definitely be a distinct highlight in ARR's career. The album is one of the finest musical packages with originality, sophistication, class and quality. http://tamil. galatta.com/ entertainment/ livewire/ id/Vinnathaandi_ Varuvaayaa_ music_review_ 34474.htmlhttp://tamil.galatta.com/entertainment/livewire/id/Vinnathaandi_Varuvaayaa_music_review_34474.html -- Regards MANAF WP SHJ Phone : - 06 - 5584373 Mobile:- 055 - 4146078 -- The new Internet Explorer® 8 - Faster, safer, easier. Re: [arr] Rediff reviews VTV music - Vintage Rahman
To be frank above REVIEW, is not at all, a good one! Very unprofessional.. Firstly, he never goes in the order of the Original tracklist.. Secondly, he wraps up the description of AROMALE, with a very vague description. Also... I didnt find anything inspired from that ENYA track... The general GENRE is like this, and many songs use the same kinds of progression, and layered synthpads! And regarding the TITANIC signature coming in shades in MANNIPAAYA, I felt it right from the TIME I heard the AMAZON PROMO... But is that INTENTIONAL It is STILL a beautiful track, eventhough the melody loses connection somewhere in the middle. .the tune running slightly directionless.. Kannukkul Kannai, reminds you of the RACY ARR tracks of the 90's and early 2000's. The composition is on the lines of Shakalaka Baby and Yakai Thiri / Fanaa (aayutha Ezhuthu/Yuva). Anbil avan too being of similar kind, but with surprising gospel interludes, making a swift cameo. ARR decides to keep Omana Penne, simple and predictable, while he drives our emotions through those scintillating violin accompaniments and Nadaswaram interludes. I initially suspected whether ARR used the continuum for the Nadaswaram bit, but the tracklist revealed that it had been recorded LIVE. Hossaana certainly is a NEW BREED for lovestories and the concept would certainly be adopted by other Kollywood composers, in their upcoming soundtracks! I would say, ARR worked less while creating the scratch of the song. But the mesmerising vocals, heavenly flow of synthpads and lavishly arranged chord progressions amplify the impact of the song! And ofcourse, those fantastic flue interludes add to the allure. Overall, this is a clever, yet classy work from ARR. The title song, Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya, is soft, subtle, yet, a melodious treat, which would take its time to hold your nerves. Aromalae, is probably the most experimental track, that a Gautham Menon film ever had. The innovative guitar design reminds you, of the Golden Era of bands like 'The Doors' and 'Pink Floyd'. Again, the brilliance of ARR here, there are not more than 4 chords in this song!!! The tune is a brilliantly reworked piece, of 'Ottam Thullal' Chants of Kerala. Overall, Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya, is a completely different experience, as ARR delivers the unexpected. Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya, has the most innovative music design amongst all Gautham menon films!

And yet, there’s one person who has done exactly that. Shaad Ali Sahgal, director of blockbusters like Saathiya and Bunty Aur Babli and the tepid Jhoom Barabar Jhoom has not only taken two years (by the time Raavana releases in June 2010) out of his professional life to assist his mentor Mani Ratnam with the never ending Raavana, he also doesn’t think there is anything weird about it or that it means taking a step back. “No,” he says resolutely, “it’s not a step back because beside the fact that Mani sir is my mentor and guru, Raavana is as much my film as any film of mine and I’m still learning with every film.” In fact,” he adds, “I have been with him for every film of his from Dil Se except when I have been shooting at the same time. It’s not something I am asked to do; it’s just something I do. I will continue to do this in the future, as I would for any close friend or anyone who had worked for me too. I have a 13-year-long relationship with Mani sir, nearly half my life. For some films I stay for a longer duration, for others I am there for a shorter while.” He is rather amused when asked what exactly it is that he does on a Mani film which another assistant can’t. “I run around and get the work done and give whatever creative and logistic input I can give to him which is what I would do for my own film. I work very very closely with him and because over a period of time our relationship has grown, my inputs are taken more seriously. I try and add as much value as I can when I am on set, try to anticipate problems and see that the work is done on time. Also,” he adds with a laugh, “I think I am the best assistant in the country.” Shaad was 19 and had just finished school when he saw Mani’s Roja and knew he had found the man he wanted to learn from except that Mani sent him away saying he wasn’t a good teacher. Two years later, when Shaad was 21 he brushed aside Mani’s objections and insisted he take him on. “Luckily Mani sir was making Dil Se and needed someone to help him with his Hindi,” Shaad says with a chuckle. Shaad never left. He shot into prominence as an independent director with the sensitive Saathiya (a remake of Mani’s Alaipayuthey) and then completely lived up to his early promise with the fun and cheeky Bunty aur Babli which did more for the cause of small-town India than a dozen National Geographic documentaries could. He faltered with Jhoom Barabar Jhoom but insists it was not the failure that made him go back to school, as it were. “I will only make a film when I think I need to make a film and I have something to say. Though Jhoom ... didn’t work, I liked the script. It is not in my hands if a film works or not.” Shaad is 34 and Mani is in his mid-fifties. When asked to define their relationship, Shaad reflects. “It’s a very strange bond, he’s neither like a boss nor like a father, it’s a friendship. It’s a relationship that I have earned and which I will always have. I talk about everything to him and I run all my scripts past him. Sometimes when he comes up with ideas which no one else would think of, I am awestruck. He is a genius and he keeps showing that quite often. It’s like seeing Sachin bat from upclose.” He continues, “It’s an old and strong bond, it’s beyond films and assisting. He and I are very close friends, we are in touch almost daily.” Co-workers on the sets say Shaad was very protective about Mani after he suffered his heart attack and would constantly monitor the food Mani ate as well as keep him supplied with the

I don't agree with that notion since it's ARR who recreates his own standards with each release, just like destroying his own ego before a compositional session. The burden of responsibility to recognize this is up to the listener, who may be challenged and confounded by expectations and biases, which is normal and natural. Again, these are trends only and just from my observational standpoint.. .nothing is black and white or exclusionary. 1) Omanna Penne: Steady and soothing .a composition that oozes with spiritualism and introspection. Using a

It's slow, introspective, and the general tone doesn't seem to care much whether it
Re: [arr] A focus on the song Manipaya
Chord, you are soo right about the unconventional melodic structure of this song. Which infact draws you to listen to it several times to understand it. Its almost like looking at an abstract painting or reading an obscure novel, where only with constant revisitation it registers in your mind and you are able to understand the true message and value behind it, and each revisitation you discover something new, which makes you want to come back to it again. Oh the raw emotion behind this song is just remarkable!! From: ichord purev...@yahoo.com To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wed, January 13, 2010 11:21:58 AM Subject: [arr] A focus on the song Manipaya I am very pleased to see this song being highly rated here in this group, coming in at number 2 in terms of favorite songs in my poll of fav VTV songs. The high ratings are a bit surprising in a way because the song's melodic structure is very unconventional and drawn out, hard to follow compared to most film song melodies, and appears to meander without direction, even though it doesn't (a criticism noted in many reviews). There are also not too many catchy hooks in the melody, even though the melody itself is quite beautiful... very much akin to a Western theatrical play song you might hear on stage. Check out the ending with Shreya's soft voice and AR's delicate piano touches. .just class, PURE CLASS!!! [arr] A Narrative review of VTV
Interesting one! http://bhavna-thexpression.blogspot.com/2010/01/vinnaithandi-varuvaya-facts-fiction-and.html Guy meets gal Omana Penne Guy. Gal. All he knows is that she is a beautiful Mallu lass. Imagine, chimes + bright yellow light combination. He loses his heart, and she becomes his `Oh Manap PeNNe.' (Oh! Woman in/of my heart) Or is it, Oh MaNap peN? (Oh bride) Either way, is there a better raga to express beauty other than Mohanam? (meaning beauty again) Falling to the cliché trap (set by the Tamils?) of naming any Malayaali girl at sight as Omana, he starts off a soothing number, lucky lady, she has the overtly talented Benny Dayal giving back up voice to her man and an equally talented Nadaswara Vidhwaan continuing. The song ends in a carol-esque mood. Divine love? Guy woos gal - Hosanna The girl probably has no idea that she broke a guy's heart by her mere presence, and he gears up to present his `other heart' for her to break. True love, folks. Guy rants, goes insane, gets her mobile no. and couldn't go beyond hello OO helloooOO and helloOOOoo. Turns out the girl has some ENT problem, she says `Hosanna' and `O' in response, in Suzanne's style. The guy, Vijayprakash singing for him, is relentless in his approach, he changes scale and proposes his everlasting love to Miss. Mallu. Gals are gals Kannukkul kannai As the custom demands, our gal doesn't say `I love you' back. But still lets him get close to her and kiss! I mean, what is the boy's problem, he has his share of fun, could he not be satisfied with that? He demands love and sings `kannukkul kannai.' Hello fella, are you even listening? One female out here, by the name Shreya Ghoshal is synchronizing a classical tune with Raja's earthy touch for you, and you would not listen? Manippaya?? Nah. Oh yes, the couple thanks Thamarai for her lyrical input, but are not 100% satisfied, though. They think they discovered their love through music, and have a plan to build a temple for A.R.Rahman, any supporters?

Chord!! Thanks for the beautiful review..:-) Thanks, Kalyan K. On Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 9:14 PM, ichord purev...@yahoo.com wrote: First of all, I do not support piracy. I wanted to wait until Tuesday before hearing the songs and eventually writing a review, but the weaker part of me got the upper hand this time and I caved in. Please forgive me. I assure you that I did order the CD from Amazon and awaiting that in the mail. If there's a distinct trend that I see in ARR's music over time, it's his reduced emphasis on musical adventurism and acrobatics and increased emphasis on subtle musical forms within a composition, often perceived subjectively as not living up to his own standards. This trend may be a function of two forces: 1)Age (emphasizing more of a gestaltic perspective) 2) Progressive evolution as part of a unique artist whose mindset is bent on conceptual expansion and really trying hard to avoid being typecasted, escaping from his own set trails to form new and distinct roads. 1) Omanna Penne: Steady and soothing.a composition that oozes with spiritualness and introspection. Nothing fancy in this composition, but the feeling left behind is extrenmely elevating and cleansing. Fantastic start. (8/10) 2) Anbil Avan: ARR at his playful best. He must have had a lot of fun putting this track together. There is nothing heavy or mindblowing about this track, but what makes it work for me is the joyful innocence in the melody and the very interesting sonic arrangements using a Shehnai type sound juxtaposed with a church organ sound. The musical interlude that has this also has some very nice, quick chord progressions that defy banality. The melody sticks easy and would be a fun song to dance with. (7/10) 3) Vinnathaandi Varuvaayaa: Wow..what a minimalistic impact! Minimalistic impact is something that I have been missing from Rahman's ouevre in recent films, but here it is, in its full glory and form. Using a minimalistic sound template for a title song is quite bold and outside the box, but boy does it work for me!!! The acoustic strings (guitar? harp?) along with vibes and small bells create such a unique, peaceful ambience in this song that transports me into a dreamlike world. Beautiful string additions in the mid section only add depth to amazing vocals, chords, and heartfelt emotions in this gem, but likely to be underrated track. Delicate, subtle, dreamy, ambient, soft, restrained, soothing, warming.I can go on and on. Again, a track doesn't have to be complex and adventursome to be powerfulthis is the genius of ARhe can create such a powerful ambience using minimal quantity. (8/10) 4) Hosana: There is no other composer in India who can arrange better than AR. In this song, many of AR's strengths are showcased.sound structure, layered, thick, yet uncluttered arrangements, symphonic textures, haunting melody, soothing ambience. The sound layers are so clean and crispthat beautiful strumming acoustic guitar is so nice!!! Also worthy of metion is the high toned Scottish flavored flute and the subtle mandolin rhythms in sync with the main rhythms, punctuated by the pulsating string sections. The female choir with the angelic expression is one of the most beautiful choir sounds I've heard. This song sticks to you and won't let go. A complete masterpiece IMO that is one of the best songs that ARR has composed in recent years. (9/10) 5) Kunnukkul Kannai Another playful techno oriented track with some pleasing electronic arrangements. The unique feature of this track for me are the string quartet type rhythmic accents throughout that give this youth song a very Western classical feel. Relatively simple by composition and sound, but again, a nice dance number with good melody. Rahman

Thanks! --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, juliencristobal juliencristobal@ wrote: My VTV review after 5-6 hearings: As I am not fluent in Tamil, I am not going to comment on the lyrics. 1) Omana Penne. This song starts beautifully with small bells followed by heavy bass. The composition seems really simple at the beginning but it's really difficult one to compose. Benny's voice is modulated and it adds to create a very unique feeling to it. No other than Benny would have been able to sing this song giving the same feeling (RnB style). However if you listen carefully you know that you are listening to an indian song due to the nadaswaram that is played from 0:45. A.R.Rahman has mixed a lot of different rhythms that makes this song unique. Kalyani makes her apparition in the of the middle song singing in Malayalam in a classical way: the listener is sent back to the 60's but modern rhythm are still being played. It's a superb anachronism. Benny vocal is back and more weird sounds are joining the song. Later, a short nadaswaram interlude is played quickly join by this modulate Benny! 10/10 2) What type of song is that? A techno/electro track? A semi-classical song? Who cares, the sound is unique! Anbil Avan starts with some notes played in a synthesizer that are quickly blend with traditionnal drums and choir. Devan starts the song with: anbil avan followed by very short sentences that leave a great effect on the listener. Chinmayi sings a few lines but the moment both Devan and Chinmayi sing together is very pleasant to the ears (1:24-1:29). After a brief humming from Chinmayi, from nowhere a wedding march is played by a pipe organ. Immediately after, the traditional south Indian nadaswaram is heard. Where are we in a church for a Christian wedding or a temple for a Hindu one? It's up to the listener imagination The song is very innovative and the mood set by the song is totally different from the other songs. A feel good song all the way thanks to A.R.Rahman catchy tune. Listening to Devan and Chinmayi (who at times sounds like Vasundhra Das) I am sure they had fun while recording the song! 9.5/10 3) Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. This song seems to be played in someone 's dream who imagines his beloved coming to him walking down a grey sky. The minimal use of music instruments helps to underline Karthik's magnificent vocal in this soft and romantic song that will have the same effect on the listener as A.R.Rahman `s En Swase Kaatre title track. The light guitar notes are enchanting. A.R.Rahman hasn't used the guitar so beautifully since Vellai Pukkal (Kannathil Muthamittal) and Khamosh Raat (Takshak) but the best part of the song is between 1:37-2:21 : pure divine! A special mention as well for the back vocalist who compliments Karthik's voice perfectly. Flip side: too short!! 10/10 4) Hosanna. This song is my favourite it is what we can call vintage A.R.Rahman. When I saw on arrahman.com a few weeks back that this song was sung by Vijay Prakash I was upset as I loved Srinivas rendition seen on youtube during the London music launch . However, Vijay is just as good as Srinivas! So what is so special about this song? EVERYTHING! What a song! A flute here, a violin and cello there, plus a guitar on the other hand and some pre-recorded rhythms create an heavenly atmosphere. No wonder the song is called Hosanna. The song progression is also very impressive from a very few instruments with Vijay Vocal singing: En ithayam, unaithaan norunggave, En maru ithayam, tharuven nee udaikave the song ends with the same lines but an explosion of sounds tell you that you have reached Heaven (is the bell at the very end a clue?). The vocals are equally good! Suzanne is at her seductive best (I love the way the sang Dreams on Fire in Slumdog Millionaire) with some very relaxing humming that invite you to some peaceful place (2:31- 3:16) . Vijay Prakash sounds very different when he sings En ithayam, unaithaan norunggave, En maru ithayam, tharuven nee udaikave where his voice is very soft and during the rest of the song where is voice is almost rough/rustic at some moment like Kailash Kher (3:24-3:29). Regarding Blaaze what to say? I was surprised to see Blaaze in such a song but A.R.Rahman included the rap in such a way that you won't even notice the change of singer. 11/10 5) Kannukul Kannai. The song has a really international appeal to it and has shades (music wise) of Yaakai Thiri 0:49-1:18 ( Ayitha Ezuthu) as well as Kelamal Kaiyile (ATM) but still it's different. Naresh Iyer sings the song with a lot of aplomb and in a very fast way. The moment that catches my attention the most is between 1:46 and 2:45 min

He was even awarded the Film Critics Award in 2004. But when it came to working with the ‘Mozart of Madras’ A R Rahman music director Alphons Joseph was a bundle of nerves. “It is every musician’s dream to be part of a Rahman project. But I didn’t expect him to call me to sing a number for Gautham Menon’s ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’, which is Rahman’s first Indian project after winning the Oscars”, said an excited Alphons. Rahman had come for the music release of ‘Vellithira’, which was composed by Alphons. The fusion song in the movie caught Rahman’s attention and after nearly five years he remembered the singer whose voice was perfect for the project. “The song is completely different from anything that has been done. It is a fusion of folk and metal with a lot of Blue style backing. Moreover, it is a Malayalam song and has a lot of aggression,” Alphons said. He said that after hearing the song Shreya Ghoshal, who has rendered a song in the movie and has worked with Alphons in Big B, commented that this was the first time she was seeing an aggressive side of Alphons, who was known to be a simple and soft spoken person. Recollecting his experience working with Rahman Alphons said that contradictory to popular perception Rahman was an extrovert who loved to have fun. “He jokes around with everyone and makes them feel at home. This makes us comfortable while recording with a genius like Rahman,” said Alphons. The movie’s first audio preview was held at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts where the artists interacted with a lot of foreign musicians. Alphons said that even though they don’t understand the language many foreigners had tears in their eyes after listening to his song. “Our music has global reach and irrespective of language people are able to relate to it. Nowadays our ragas and scales are used in western music too,” said Alphons, who is now pursuing his MA in Music and hopes to do a research on vocal technique development. “Apart from his role as a judge in a popular singing reality show I am also a vocal trainer for the contestants. I sing both classical and western and hence I can demonstrate to the contestants how to modulate their voice accordingly,” he said. http://bit.ly/61uqdI -- - Regards ~ ~ A.R.Rajib ~ ~
[arr] Another nice review of VTV
http://www.lordoftheweb.info/993/vinnai-thandi-varuvaya-vtv-music-review/ After seeing its world premiere in London in a gala event on the 19th of December, the much hyped songs of Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya are out at last. With these songs coming after the successful Oscar exploits of maestro A.R.Rahman, the hype and buzz surrounding the songs of the movie is understandable. Add to this the fact that Gautham Menon and A.R.Rahman are working together for the first time, the excitement is almost palpable. Omana Penne Singers: Benny Dayal, Kalyani Menon Malayalam Lyrics: Kalyani Menon The percussion in this song stands out right from the start. The kind of rythmic song that is soothing to the ears. Well suited for Benny Dayal and he has excelled as usual. The nadaswaram bit, heard on and off in the background, takes the song to another level towards the end. Unfortunately, the music masks the lyrics at places, thereby reducing the pleasure to some extent, but with such lovely music, the complaints wont be loud. Anbil Avan Singers: Devan Ekambaram, Chinmayi A peppy number if you can call it. The initial segment sets up the song very well. Devan has done a commendable job. Chinmayi adds a soulful effect to the song and has backed up Devan very well. The chorus has done as good a job as the lead singers. The traditional marriage music that comes in the middle of the song offers splendid transition. Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa Singers: Karthik Another song comprising of amazing guitar scores, with Karthik's voice competing with the amazing music through all the changes in pitch. The music is loud at places and the voice of the singer is subdued at places, something that is predominant in this album. The lyrics becomes clear only after a few listenings, which is a shame since Thamari continues to out do herself in the lyrics department time and again. Despite these foibles, the short song packs a punch and is a good title song. Hosanna Singers: Vijay Prakash, Suzanne, Blaaze English Rap Lyrics: Blaaze This has to be the most popular song of the album. Amazing music, singing and lyrics combine to create this masterpiece that is bound to be wildly popular with the crowd. What begins as a melody with soothing music and soulful female chorus parts transitions beautifully into rap and then back to melody. Vijay Prakash has beautifully captured the mood of the song . Suzzane, with her excellent singing culminating in a mesmerizing humming has made the song better, if that is even possible. Blaaze is good with what he does, as usual. Kannukkul Kannai Singers: Naresh Iyer While one was thinking that the guitar has been the favorite of Rahman in this album comes this number with fantastic violin interludes. Awesome westernized music with amazing tamil lyrics from Thamarai truly symbolizes the position that tamil culture should be in - embracing the western world while holding on to, and spreading, its roots. Naresh Iyer does the song with finesse and his uttering of the words does justice to the lyrics. Mannipaaya Singers: A.R.Rahman, Shreya Ghoshal Shreya and Rahman. Awesome combination. Throw in Thirukkural and we get a magical song. The keyboard really owns this song and the flute makes an appearance making the album even more varied. Shreya is really the highlight of the song, with the music vying to catch the listeners attention. Dont miss the kural rendered in amazing chorus with the flute in the background. Aaoromale Singers: Alphonse Malayalam Lyrics: Kaithapram A song that starts slow, goes on to pick speed slightly and makes you say Wow after listening to it. Thats Aaromale! With amazing guitar scores that give you the feel of country music, and invigorating malayalam lyrics, this song will be quickly liked by the music aficionados. This song's popularity will be like the song itself -slow, but will start to rise once people have listened to it a few times. This is a true fusion of western and south Indian music, something that Rahman always wanted to capture. My personal favorite. While Hosanna will be popular with the crowd, Mannipaaya and Aaromale bring in variety to the album. While it is slightly saddening that the amazing lyrics get masked at times by the music, it can still be ignored. Like any Rahman album, the songs will take some time to pickup ( apart from Hosanna that is!) but will last long, satisfying every kind of music lover. Time and again, Rahman manages to wow us.
Re: [arr] My VTV review!
Nice review!! On Mon, Jan 11, 2010 at 10:51 PM, juliencristobal juliencristo...@yahoo.frwrote: My VTV review after 5-6 hearings: As I am not fluent in Tamil, I am not going to comment on the lyrics. It's up to the listener imagination… The song is very innovative and the mood set by the song is totally different from the other songs. The moment that catches my attention the most is between 1:46 and 2:45 min where music and vocal reach the sky (pun intended): baring the vocal, we are not listening to a tamil song! I am sure the song is more interesting if you understand the lyrics….I need to listen to this one more carefully in

Rafid --- In arrahmanfans@ yahoogroups. com, ichord purevibz@ wrote: After some corrections and additions: If there's a distinct trend that I see in ARR's music over time, it's his reduced emphasis on musical adventurism and acrobatics and increased emphasis on subtle musical forms within a composition, often perceived subjectively as not living up to his own standards. 1) Omanna Penne: Steady and soothing .a composition that oozes with spiritualism and introspection. In this song, many of AR's strengths are
