Dude Pradeep ! You can filter AR messages in yahoo by making mails directly get
into your created custom folders. Go to options feature after log in to your
mail in right top. There is Filter option. Just create/add an exclusive folder
with a name like AR Yahoo give the id in the mail-id seeking box
arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com save exit. All the messages coming from this id
will get into that exclusive folder. Now In-Box is for your other mails.

Of late, I've subscribed to my Gmail, use the advanced version. So

btw, it would have been great, if Yahoo after all these years had

Re: [arr] To sing like Rahman!

2008-06-20 Thread arr pavan
Dude ! i admit every singer has some pluses minuses. I was really
disappointed to hear Hariharan, kartik or sukhwinder Aslam Khan in showing
their creativity aspect in classical genre while singing Ghanan Ghanan in AR
concerts, saw last week in youtube. They suffer with lack of creativity by keep
on repeating certain limited phrases not exploring into much of it. If this is
the case of so-called famous singers like hariharan or sukwinder not to mention
about female singers like chitra, madusri sadna who are fit only for tailor
made songs inside studios. These play back singers be it male or female are the
weakest when show casing their classical side of talent that is not pre-sung in
albums which have covered all their errors. On other hand you hear to singers
used to classical music render these creative aspect of film music, you will
know what it is. But these classical singers mostly dont possess voices apt for
playback singing. Nithyasri just amazing in minsara
kanna. But her voice cant be much used for playback. Same to Bombay Jayashri.
Unni Krishnan can fit to both extremes of music but his voice not much
attractive for playback though his songs are hits :) It is a golden rule, you
cannot have all the talents perfect in one.

As much as songs by Rahman sound great...I must say that I don't
really buy into a few of your observations...

a) singers who can go high pitch without breaking! There are too many
of them! Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwinder, are all masters of
this!

b) Javed Ali might sing a Sukhwinder song on stage, but he is FR
from the magic that Sukhwinder creates! For that matter, I bet Javed
could sing a Rahman song. Of course, this would not happen with Rahman
himself there, and plus similiarly - it won't sound as good.

Sorry about being blunt. But, I must say that while Rahman is by far
the most amazing musician ever, with reference to singers - its not
fair to underrate those who are really genius in that field.

This is not any new thought but each time I hear a song sung by rahman
himself im forced to think of this!
The songs which Rahman sings makes them all the more special because
of his voice way ahead of his composition.Take any song from Dilse to
fanaa..there is this voice that makes the song more a pleasure to hear.
Rahman is perhaps the most versatile singer ever. I think this year
should fetch him awards for his crooning as well. The year began with
Khwaja mere Khwaja, Meherbaan and tu bole main boloon till now!!
I often feel, in the past, although ARR has recieved innumerable
awards for his music, he has been left behind as a singer for reasons
we need to blame Rahman himself!!
Firstly, he calls himself a very upcoming singer, simply becuase of
his humble nature and always lifts up the other singers-a truly noble
quality. This may take off the attention from him-but look at him he
is more than happy to give it to others.
Secondly, he makes his singing sound like its so easy!! Another reason
perhapy why the jury might just not consider his singing! But wait-try
singing the song he sang dear jury members and you might want to
 reconsider!
Whenever Rahman sings a song, he makes it impossible for others to
sing it. In his concerts, he has Javed Ali to sing Sukhwinder but
there's not a chance when one sing like rahman himself. He is perhaps
the only male voice who can go so high without breaking off or losing
control. The speciality he gives to a song is very simple, like going
high to end a line-maybe in Khwaja or Vande matram or the stress he
gives to the sound CH like Chaiya hai in Khwaja or SHK sound
in Bhi Rashk kare or THA like Nikla Tha in dilse. Im in awe!!
Rahman knows it all-as simple as it may sound to the listener, its a
trick to the singer to try like him!
His voice can be divine-Like in Zikr. His voice can be a lover-like in
Tere bina. His voice can be patriotic like in VM or ye jo des ha tera.
His voice can be naughty like in tu bole..This is what versatiltiy
 means!!
Well with almost six to seven ARR Releases this yr im hoping the voice
that I fell in love with Yelelo right from Roja wins awards for his
 voice!
And Sir, please dont even claim that your just beginning as a singer
or dont even say you dont like your voice-because everytime I need
some energy, we drink on Dilse or Vellai pookal! True!

Hi every one,
One of my friends told that he had read an article in Satanic Church website
advising their believers to promote the sales of 'Bombay Dreams' by A R Rahman.
This was because some of the songs had Satanic vibrations in it. I was tensed

After searching i got this link

All the songs were a break through in the Indian Music world.
For the 1st time, we had Opera seen in our filmi music. That was Putham pudhu
bhoomi.
For the 1st time, we had such heavily programmed beats in Chanralekha.
For the 1st time, we had a genuine rock feel in Kannum Kannum and that too for
a Raaga based song.
For the 1st time, we had such a strange mix of emotions in Thee Thee.
For the 1st time, we had a song without any instruments just chorus in
Rasathi.

These kind of comments are common in the reality shows. there are
instances when the judges in SaReGaMaPa had said for a contestant that he had
sung the Satrangi Re better than the original which was absolute baseless. Even
a normal listener who dont understand Sur, Taal would say that the contestant
had goofed up that song. But you have to sometimes also think that the relaity
show these days are just a show piece like WWF whose only ideology is TRP and
marketing. So they have to fill these kind of dialogs though baseless and
bakwaas.
There are examples when judges have contemplated that the contestants'
rendition was much better than that of Lataji Ashaji's. Now who on earth will
believe but their target is to please those fans who would pour SMS listening
to these statements, happens.
On another note ARR is one such Music director who has used a potential of the
singers their specialty to the max than being hard and strict for the note.
Consider the Jaane tu from Runa, there are places where she misses but on the
other side it gives a feel (timbre) which makes the song impeccable. This can
only happen in the hands of a genius. another example is the Lukka Chippi
Jiya Jale and its now no secret that ARR had craftily manipulated the flaws
in Lataji's voice because of the age factor to sound impeccable again. At the
same time he is a master to get the best from Hariharan in Tu Hi Re, Chanda
re... similarly Satrangi re by Sonu Nigam..

Though it hurts a lot but if you learn the reality you will have a reason to
forgive Vishal or Himesh or Ismail. At one part of time they are also governed
to the other factors.

While he hasn’t finalised on the cast for his movies, one person will

But yes, music plays a very important part in my creativity. My early films
like Kalicharan started as a drama and then the music was added on. My latest
directorial venture Black White was also a drama with music in it.

AR Rahman who worked earlier with Subhash Ghai in Taal and a part of Kisna is
back in Yuvraj. Rahman and I have been in touch constantly. We jell really
well. Like Taal, Yuvraj is based on music.

I've told Rahman, Yuvraj belongs to two people, Rahman and Subhash Ghai, in
that order. All the main characters are musicians in Yuvraj.

  On Yuvraj :

Subhash says Yuvraj is about the arrogance of contemporary youth. You want
to know who's the Yuvraj? Salman, Anil Kapoor or Zayed Khan? If I reveal that
who would want to see my film?

Yuvraj is about the over-confidence of today's youth. Every one wants to be a
rock star, regardless of whether they have the morals to go with the
appellation.

Secondly, regarding the show you are talking about, even I saw that
episode..Yes..Vishal did say that Rahman's sur went here and there in the Chale
Chalo song...but I hope you also listened to what he said next.. He said, The
life that rahman brought in to the song was something terrific.

That performance was one good example of how one should not perform a song on
stage. It was absolutly a flat performance of chale chalo song.

Yes, one might argue that he shouldnt have said it, But I think VS love that
song so much that they were upset with such a bad performance.

Arr has produced such a great gem wid Varaga Nadhikarai...its composition has a

I got to listen to the songs of Sangamam after seeing the thread here. I think
its a great musical movie. A movie which has lovely folk songs with  very racy
beats. Its a lovely blend of classical music and folk music. Songs like
'Margazhi  Thingal which starts off with the famous Thirupavai has been sung
beautifully to the raga of Sindhu Bhairavi. The transcendtal strumming of the
tanpoora transfers one to an ethereal world. the song that impressed me most
was 'Sowkiamma'Â sung by nityashri and this song shows one the nuances of the
raga ' Maand'. Though I am not competent enough to comment on this, I think
Maand is a hindustani raag and finds its place in carnatic music too as does
the raga 'Desh'. ARR has shown his prowess in the field of carnatic classical
music and am sure this one song is enough to make his critics  eat a humble
pie. The other song Varahanadhi Karai I think is using the raga Yemen Kalyani
as its base though its a mix of
folk music.  But then again ARR has done it again bringing in  fine blend of
folk music and classical music.
All in all its a great album I think.

Cheers

Mahiya

[arr] Marmayogi Dasaavathar

2008-06-15 Thread arr pavan
I want Marmayogi to compete with Dasavathar. A good scope for music, bgms
trilingual, perfect fit to have AR's music in Dasaavathar, feel missed Arr in
Dasa. Rediff review doing a Wow! rating, the winning Super human efforts
flashy tech-effects is the biggest strength of Dasaavathar. For Marmayogi with
AR's music in praying for the script effects. To see this creative
brilliance of Dasaavathar with the readily available history support, script
make-ups of Jodha Akbar, Ashustosh Gowarikar-Hrithik Vs.
K.S.Ravikumar-Kamalhassan, my vote is to Music in Jodha Akbar and to movie in
Dasaavatharam.

What a super human effort! That will be the first reaction of any normal film
buff who watches Kamal Haasan's Tamil magnum opus, Dasavathaaram. The film is
certain to thrill and entertain the audience for all of its 165 minutes, making
them feel that they are watching something unusual and spectacular on screen.

The film starts off with an incident that occurs in the 12th century when
Shaivite intolerance against Vaishnavites was at its peak. An ardent Vishnu
devotee loses his life to save the idol of Lord Ranganatha. Kamal plays his
first role of Vishnu devotee Rangarajan in this episode which is marked by
excellent technical work and the actor's extraordinary performance.
From here, the film goes to a time when the whole world is on the brink of a
biological warfare waged by terrorists. Actively opposing them is the American
president who urges the rest of the world to combat this evil.

Meanwhile, a computer chip containing a vicious biological material goes
missing from a laboratory in the United States. An in-house scientist Govinda
(again played by Kamal Hassan) who is aware of the dangers of the material
launches a hunt for the missing material, which takes him to India.

In the course of the hunt for the missing chip, Kamal takes on eight more
characters and travels to many continents.

The film is a scientific thriller par excellence and it is certain that
Kamal has excelled in his eleventh role of the story and script writer. It is
difficult to imagine that any normal script writer can think of weaving such a
fantastic subject that mixes intelligence with commercial ingredients. It
requires an extraordinary intelligent mind to write the sequences some of which
are food for thought to the intellectuals as well as ordinary people. Perhaps
this is the best script of Kamal Hassan till date. Throughout the film, the
writer, an atheist questions the existence of God.

Now comes the challenging part -- picking Kamal's best role out of his ten.
Will it be Annachi or Padikkadha Medhai, who fights against the Sand Mafia? Or
will it be the investigative officer Naidu? Better yet, will it be the 100-year
old woman Krishnaveni, who still yearns the return of her son? But what about
the Punjabi pop singer Avatar Singh or for that matter the former CIA agent,
Fletcher? Will it be President George Bush or the lanky Afghan merchant? You
get the point. So excellent is the make-up and voice modulation that picking
any one character is difficult.

Though Kamal had performed many roles that were similar to the roles of 12th
century priest, Rangarajan and scientist Govinda, you still see some novelty in
Dasavathaaram.
It is very difficult to single out the best sequence of the film, yet the
tsunami episode is perhaps the outstanding presentation mainly because of the
top class visuals backed by a superb background effort.

It is not necessary to say how great an actor Kamal Haasan is but one thing
has to be said; no other actor would have dared to take on these varied roles.
And hats off to him.
As for the heroine, Asin, she has improved since her debut. In a way,
Dasavathaaram is an extension of her excellent performance in Ghajini. All the
other artists have also performed very well.

K.S. Ravi Kumar should also be complimented for his handling of such a
complicated but challenging subject. This may well go down in the history of
Indian cinema as a unique experiment in the commercial circuit. He has taken
the best out of his artists and technicians.

Only Himesh Reshammiya fails him. Except for Ulaganayagane and the Bhangra
song, the rest are nothing to write home about. However, background music by
Devi Sriprasad is excellent.

So is the camera work by Ravi Varman. The special effects and stunt
choreography are of international standards.
All in all, Dasavathaaram as an extraordinary effort.

Dude ! Sangamam is based on folk classical. The scope for scoring something
unique is limited to script. One cannot expect a thiruda thiruda or jeans or

music, given that, AR done a good job, what the movie demands. Dude there were
classical tracks in Gentleman - En Veetu Thottathil, Duet, Kadhalan -

Re: [arr] How is KMC different from whistling woods?

2008-06-11 Thread arr pavan
Dude both are schools for exploring talents. But WW is FOR FILMS OF FILMS BY
FILMS wherein KMMC is exclusively FOR MUSIC OF MUSIC BY MUSIC this KMMC is
not only for film music. It deals with all kinds of music to find talents
make them survive the best on their own specialities in many ways including
composing. AR said they can earn from music by participating in any country's
music troupe with self-confidence like other professional courses do. That is
how the cost matters. WW is not for creating their own Symphony Orchestra. They
may teach a general course on how to produce music, sound recording,
re-recording, arranging, co-ordinating techniques for films. WW is not for
teaching basics of music to advanced level and in various genres KMMC is
doing that with an additional aim of discovering Indian Symphony Orchestra
competing with world standards after few years where they able to play any kind
of music. This is really a great move from AR. None of the film music
directors in Indian history so far, have gone to this extent of achievement in
short span. Check the link on Woods, what it offers on music part.

Re: [arr] RAHMANJI MISSED NATIONAL AWARD :-(

2008-06-11 Thread arr pavan
Dude Ramanand ! Agreed :) i am a listener to the renditions of national awardee
Aarthi Ankalikar Tikekar. I am happy for her winning one. Someone said govt. is
partial to uplift konkani movies. It is wrong to comment like that. i can feel
hear from konkani friends complain, their films are not recognised for their
talents :) Man please do not under-estimate, movies in other languages are not
great. Every language has its own color greatness to speak their part in
movies which we cannot understand, unless mastering all languages. Govt. is
doing their bit to the reign of Presidents. Everyone forgets AR is Padmashri at
an early age, one step ahead of these national awards :) Rather aiming for
these, it is time to see him in padmabushan BHARAT RATNA for spreading peace
through music that is likeable overseas, serving the society by sharing his
knowledge through kmmc.

Indian Govt. had to consider every major talent lang-wise. Let there not be
one award in main categories representing whole nation. Best thing is, like it
is announcing films in all languages, let it also announce convert all these
single special awards into lang.-wise awards to solve everyone's expectation
persons deserve that wont miss is something important to integrate all. This
is not the kind of just satisfying them but they deserve the awards truly out
of merit talent. Some miss it due to known unavoidable circumstances. It is
sad that most deserving talents from various field of arts that is bit away
from core glamour world of bollywood, go unnoticed. This is happening for ages.
Within that they are trying their maximum. Hope Govt. gets greater awareness on
not to miss any deserving individual in their field of arts recognise them
with awards in time.

J Ramanand [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
[Couldn't resist writing in, as I was a little surprised by some of
the comments on this topic.]

Ashok Patki, who won this year's National Award for Music, is no
greenhorn. Even though some of you may have not heard of him, he's a
veteran with several albums to his credit. I wonder how many of you,
who have dismissed the award as not being meritorious, have actually
heard the music of Antarnad (I'll readily confess I haven't, but then
I'm not saying his work is inferior).

This is not to say that the National Awards are flawless. I myself
find some of the awards in the last few years, and even this year, to
be eyebrow-raising. But I think many people will admit that most of
the awards (especially the less glamourous ones) go to fairly talented
people, even if they are not popular, or even if it wasn't their best
work.
In comparison, I (and again, I'm sure, others would agree) find that
some of the mainstream 'Bollywood' awards seem to degenerate into
fraternal backscratching. Rahman wins a lot of these awards, but no
one is silly enough to suggest lack of merit in these choices, even if
they didn't like who won the other awards in those shows. The same
courtesy should be extended to these awardees as well.

Ashok Patki's pedigree isn't diminished by our ignorance of his work,
nor is Rahman's genius shadowed by not winning an award. IIRC, I read
in this very group that Rahman was quoted as saying that the music of
Omkara was among the best that year, so some of you should have been
canvassing for that film to win, given that it was among Rahman's own
choices. (BTW, some of you have mentioned Rang De Basanti in this
context. FYI, that film was a 2005 submission, and you may recall
Naresh Iyer winning for that film last year.)

I guess a man of Rahman's stature would like us to broaden our musical
horizons, especially w.r.t Indian musicians, and not be so blinded by
affection for him. Disappointment is understandable, dismissal isn't
:-) The list of national awardees for Best Music is almost a who's who
of musical talent, especially lesser known talent, and is a good place
to begin such explorations, is it not?

Returning to Ashok Patki. His website is at http://www.ashokpatki.com,
but unfortunately no non-Marathi version seems to exist. I can't find
the music of Antarnaad online, but his Savalee (or Savalii,
meaning 'shadow'), a recent Marathi film, is said to have some good
classical numbers. They can be heard at
www.musicindiaonline.com/music/hindi_bollywood/s/movie_name.9074/

And finally, most of you must have heard at least one famous creation
by Ashok Patki. That happens to be mile sur meraa tumhaara.

happy aural adventures,
Ramanand

Well Just one person clarifying it is not enough What does
this person know If the cassette

cover says that it is by Rahman...Then? ?? And also, Megastar Mohanlal

himselves says Music By Rahman in the intro...What else do you need???

The movie was in 1993, where ARR was already a BIGSHOT and did not need to

arrange for any other composer. Ouseppachan too worked in d crew as an

arranger.

Just becuase the movie didnt release, u cant credit any other composer for

ARR's WORK.. Mampoove was first re-used in Vaishnavar since d song did

not appear in the Movie(Yodha) ..

[arr] Radiandmusic reviews ADA (3 / 5)

2008-06-06 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
  Ada
By Shabana Ali
Radioandmusic.com
(Published on 5 June 2008)

Music Director: A.R. Rahman

Lyrics: Nusrat Badr and Raqueeb Alam

Our Rating: 3/ 5

  previous_music_reviews(CBEFF8); Ada certainly
reflects the versatility of ace music director A R Rahman. It has a soothing
feel to the music, but cannot be slotted as one of his best works. The musician
has dished out some magical albums like Guru, Rang De Basanti and Jodha Akhbar.
Ada is an album with eight songs and an instrumental, sans remix versions of
any. Ishq Ada hai definitely tops the chart, but Meherbaan and Gulfisha will
follow soothe. Only if the lyrics were taken care of Ada could have been
another legend of Rehman. Getting a personal copy of the album is not a bad
idea for the music lovers. Title track Ishq Ada is an out and out romantic
number. Newbie Rashid Ali's voice is heart rendering and mesmerizing. The
simplicity of the music lies with the lower notes played in the base guitar and
the old sound of the accordion.
Rahman's lead guitarist has used the platform very well. The song also has a
female version sung by Parul Mishra The female version has been given a
classical touch with higher notes in base guitar and drums.

Hawa sun hawa is sung by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik. Though music is
different and has a fresh feel, it is a wee bit too slow. The song can be rated
as average.
'Gum sum gum sum' is crooned by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik, again. The song
doesn't sound novel. The listeners would definitely expect something more from
the song.
Here's some breather for the music lovers after those gloomy tracks! Gulfisha
hits the right chord. The background score and harmonious beats will set your
heartbeat racing. Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan's unique voice sets the song apart
from the varied mixes in the album.

document.write()Rahman's melodious voice is meant to
soothe the ears. Meherbaan, an ultimate romantic track and creates imagery
while listening to it. The lyrics are exceptionally good.
The three minute long song is sure to leave the listener spellbound.
Listeners are bound to fall in love with the song every time they turn it on.
The older the song is to the listeners ears it sounds new to the ears. The
instrumental version is equally beautiful.
Tu Mera hai brings Chitra, Sukhwinder Singh and Naresh Iyer together. The
track has an exceptional music but average lyrics. They don't have the same
impact as his other songs.
Hai Dard is a gloomy track of the album. The music doesn't touch the heart.
However, Udit Narayan's vocals pep the song to some extent. The lyrics of the
song are pretty good.
Alka Yagnik and Jayachandran give a soulful vocalization of Milo wahan wahan.
Their vocals complement each other and are sure to have an impact on the young
hearts.

Ada may not be every music lover's pick, but it has the melodious quotient
intact

Re: [arr] ADA JTYJN Review by a College Student

2008-06-05 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Stupid Review...This person is in need of some serious help...Rahman should do
some more innovation? He has gone nuts..

Vithur [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Hawa sun' sung by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik is similar to Udhaya
of Udhaya and, though soft, carries a heard-before feel. 'Gumsum' (again the
same duo) is more like a rework of Sivaji's Vaaji. 'Gulfisha' (Nigam and
Sunidhi Chauhan) is a typical Sunidhi song, butyou don't need a Rahman for
this. 'Maherbaan', sung by the big man himself, is good, but the tune being
that of Pray for me brother does irk you. 'Tu mera' (Chitra and Sukhwinder
Singh) seems to have been inspired by Varugirai of Anbe Aruyire. 'Hai dardh'
(Udit Narayanan) is not a great effort but takes you along thanks to the singer.

The pick of the album is 'Ishq ada' (female version by Parul Mishra and the
male by Rashid Ali). Rahman proves his talent in blending Sufi and western
music. 'Muje milo' (Alka Yagnik and Jayachandran) is inspired by Kannathil
Muthamittal, which took off from a R.D.Burman number. Rahman always hides his
inspirations by rendering the notes in high pitch, this time it hasn't worked.
Thanks to uncertainty over the album's release, these songs have been under
covers for four years and so Rahman had every right to use these numbers
elsewhere. But ARR fans don't want repetition.

Rahman's interest over Devi Sri Prasad's music shows in 'Kabhi Kabhi '(Rashid
Ali), a reworking of Apudo Ipudo of Bommarilu. 'Pappu can't dance' (Blaze,
Aslam, Tanvi, Anupama, Benny, Tanvi, Darshana, Satish) sure makes your feet
move but the tune and instruments aren't fresh. More like a Shankar-Eshan-Loy
remix. 'Nazarein milana' (Swetha, Naresh and Satish) has great use of vocals
blended with guitar. But the resemblance to Yuhi chala of Swades hampers your
interest. 'Tu Bole' (Rahman himself) has a feel of the 1970s jazz but since the
same feel and instrument arrangement were used in in Silunu Oru Kadhal and
Iruvar, there isn't much new here. 'Kahin To' (Rashid Ali, Vasundhara Das) is
definitely the pick of the album. The sadder version of 'Jaane Tu' (Sukhwinder
Singh) doesn't bore you mainly due to Sukhwinder. The violin bit is again the
heard-before variety, this time from Uyire in Bombay. It could have been a
great album had Rahman shown more innovation.

Coming to limitations on another claim, tastes are changing to trends amp;

other tamil mds cannot understand these facts sadly amp; for their limited
exposure on richer side of tamil music on traditional, classical amp; by
films. Raja may
not be interested to learn urdu amp; hindi to jump into bollywood to try
there. Raja just for a decade now stands 2nd to raghuman in creativity. I would
ask why heros from various states dont try their luck in bollywood. Why
even Kamal amp; Rajini could not find a constant place in bollywood with their
talents. It is difficult business-wisenbsp;considering the style of living,
languagenbsp;amp; what the society demand in films in that culture at that
time.

May be ilayaraja is satisfied with what he does at the period when
raghuman is very junior amp; not in action. Raja is contented with the
money amp; entertaining tamil fans as far as possible. I believe even
if raja gets more hindi films he wont deviate or cheat tamil fans from
giving best music also to tamil films at later stages in a way of
thanking the soil amp; his first fans which is not in the case of
raghuman. Like this guy Chord is sick of putting posts thinking himself
as the best critic who learnt all forms of Indian Music, Raghuman is
sick after money forgetting his good old tamil fans who want to listen
to some best tunes even for that few tamil films he is working in.
when fans claim Raja could not do what raghuman did in bollywood they forgot,
what fans amp; critics in north claim as the famous A to Z of bollywood

  Friends,
I do not know how much I am qualified or not qualified to say some thing on
this knowledge forum. Though I am with the group for months on, this is my
first posting. My favorites are almost all the songs of ARR. As a matter of
fact I am, eminently placed to get disqualified from belonging to this Group. I
do not know Hindi. I do not Know Tamil. I do not have any knowledge of Music.
Above all this, I am aged all of 72 years. But I have a gut feeling about and
instant reaction to good tunes, good instrumentation and calm, soothing and
vibrant music.
That day ages back when I first heard songs from Roja, I instinctively knew
that this gentleman arrived to thrill us forever and take us on a musical
raid of un-scalable and unimaginable heights. He elevated cine music to
unattainable heights.
I have a good collection of his Tamil songs which I love many, I like all.
Daily, I listen to these songs for 2 to 4 hours. They refresh me, keep me fit
and energetic. Arr's uniquness, according to me, I repeat, according to me,,
lies in:
1. Treating voice [male or female] as yet another instrument, to be played upon.
2. Each of his song is a symphony. To reach those heights and lows in 3/4
minutes is possible only to him.
3. He is a master at creating heavenly interludes which are more often than not
are the highlights of many songs.
4. I had never heard any one using drums [or allied instruments], shehnai, [I
am not worried about exact names, as long as I enjoy them], flute to this
advantage. How he introduces weaving them in to the voice, takes them, leaving
the voice behind, to a solo crescendo and taper off, very effectively, yet
all in a fraction of a minute, which is humanly impossible. He is Blessed, if
not he himself is Divine.
5. I divide the Indian cine music era in to two segments. PreARR and PostARR
eras. In the PreARR era we used to ask who sang that song? Rafi or Kishore.
Now we ask who composed it? That is the power duly acquired and got by our
honored ARR.
I have my own two Play-lists of ARR's Tamil songs. One I play in whichever mood
I am in. These songs are level-all gems. The second list I play when I feel I
am in good and high spirit!
In other words, what I am saying is that I adore those, around 70, Tamil songs
tuned by ARR, even though I do not know the language. Proving, if proof is
needed, music has no language. Rather It is ARR who proved it through millions
like me. Let us not enter in to Lilliputian arguments over that GIANT Musician
whose presence amongst us we are fortunate to have.
The Beauty is I hear his songs even when I am not listening to them!!! Thanks
to those haunting and teasing melodies and tunes.

[arr] NDTV reviews JTYJN

2008-06-02 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na is the launch pad of Aamir Khan's nephew Imraan and to
play it safe, Aamir has roped in A.R. Rahman for the music. Set against a
campus backdrop, the film's music gives us an insight into the other side of
the composer.

Newcomer Rashid Ali can thank Rahman for a great debut as he croons to Kabhi
Kabhi Aditi, a romantic fun piece. The track doesn't sound much like a Rahman
composition, but is nevertheless an enjoyable song as Rashid's vocals gives it
a youthful touch. Lyricist Abbas Tyrewala ensures his lyrics don't disappoint
either.

Putting a complete halt to the success of the previous track is Pappu can't
dance. The title itself makes you wonder if it is worth hearing. Well, not
really. It is a high paced number that comprises of bizarre thumping music with
extra beats. The song may stick to its theme, but as an audio number, it
doesn't fare well. As far as singers go, Rahman usually picks good artistes for
his albums, but his current bunch for 'Pappu...' does not impress at all.

Jaane tu mera kya hai helps the album pick up once again. This track has a
repeat value and can pull anyone into its sombre mood. Sung by Runa Rizvi and
written by Abbas, the sad and emotional number revolves around the female
protagonist and will definitely find a place among listeners.

Sukhwinder Singh renders the second version of the track that revolves around
the male protagonist. In spite of being a regular with these kind of songs, he
doesn't sound repetitive. The lyrics are touchy and poetic, courtesy Abbas.

Finally, we come across a typical Rahman number that doesn't sound monotonous
but is in fact one of the best songs of the album. Nazrein milaana nazrein
churaana has an array of singers but doesn't commit the same mistakes as
'Pappu...'

The long list of newcomers that forms part of the album finally gives way to
the composer himself. Rahman croons another very-unlike-himself track, Tu Bole
Main Boloon. It belongs to the genre of jazz with saxophones, violins and
pianos thrown in. It carries with it a very contemporary, western feel.

Rahman dives into Indi-pop next for Kahin to. Listeners get a breather in the
form of Vasundhara Das, whose brilliant voice is being heard after a long gap.
A slow paced number, the song also has Rashid's voice and encompasses the
ingredients of a slow-moving, romantic track. However, Abbas's lyrics are not
so impressive.

Rahman's attempt at experimenting with new and different sounds for the album
may not have resulted in chartbuster hits, but the attempt is worth hearing.
Like Naresh Iyer in Rang De Basanti, the surprise package of this album is
Rashid.

W ith Dasavatharam all set to hit theatres on June 13, Kamal Haasan has already

title with a popular yesteryear film starring the legendary MGR, which was
released in 1951. Set in the seventh century, the film's theme of vendetta
revolves around a war between two dynasties which leaves a sole survivor — a
child from one of the clans..

Kamal's character resuces the child and grooms him into a brave man, imparting
his wisdom to him. How the young man revives the past glory of his lost kingdom
forms the crux of the story.

Kamal has managed to cast Hema Malini in an important role, which has shades of
grey.

The actor who seems ever-ready to experiment, will employ a new top-of-the-line
camera called Red, which has never before been used by any filmmaker in India.
The equipment is said to give a high 5K resolution.

Previously, director Shankar had used only a 4K resolution for his earlier film
Sivaji.

If there are some layer separating software now thats going to be a treasure

director, then the lyricist and then the composer role comes inHere both the
lyricist and director are the same.

One good example is..Gulzar had written the lyrics of Chayyian Chayyian as
Thaiyyan Thaiyyan...but rahman had insited and got the words Chayyian
Chayyian.Correct me if i am wrong on this.

Thanks for your view on this. :-)

I think that is not a correct view of the situation.

Music Director is ultimately responsible for entire music including the
lyrics, the renderings, the instruments, whatever. Every person involved
in the creation of a song does what the Music Director asks him to do.
They all don't really have a free-will in it, but only have to use their
creativity.

So, saying that ARR is not responsible for lyrics is sort of undermining
ARR's efforts that he puts in his music.

Such small similarities of a phrase or two are not really a copying
becuase with so many movies and so many songs being composed, u will
soon find that all phrases have already been used so all new songs which
use these phrases will be counted as copied.

I think ARR or any MD is responsible for the lyrics also.

Wondering why KB sir is notnbsp;making more movies these days though he
crossed his 100th movie mark withnbsp;Paarthaalay Paravasam with ARR. Duet is

A. R. Rehman - Leaving Celebrity Status Behind
Syed Faisal Ali, Arab News
Friday, 13, January, 2006 (13, Dhul Hijjah, 1426)

nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; A.R. Rahman
nbsp;

MINA, 12 January 2006 — From a non-believer to a worshipper; from polytheist to
monotheist; from Dileep Kumar to Allah Rakha Rahman, the famous music wizard
has come a long way. This journey, he says, has completely changed his outlook
toward life.
nbsp;
Rahman is well-known in India. He revolutionized Bollywood music, giving it a
new direction. But in Mina, the man was spiritually charged, relaxing in his
camp after Isha prayers, remarkably very far from the rhythm of success.
nbsp;
He said that in India’s film world, people change Muslim names to Hindu ones to
get success but, “in my case it was just the opposite from Dileep Kumar to
Allah Rakha Rahman — and I’m very proud of it.”
nbsp;
Rahman’s music is everywhere: in discotheques, in malls, at wedding parties, on
satellite channels, in taxis. He is a celebrity in his own right. His face
adorns the cover of every album he cuts. Autograph hunters hound him wherever
he goes. A couple of companies have tried to lure him into product
endorsements, but he refused, preferring to distance himself from the glare and
the sometimes self-indulgent afterglow of fame.
nbsp;
Such was his attitude when Arab News met him yesterday in Mina after a hunt of
five hours that had started just after Maghreb prayers.
nbsp;
Once a practitioner of idolatry, Rahman now talks about Islam like a scholar.
He winced as he spoke about the ignorance of some Muslims and the divisions
among them on trivial issues.
nbsp;
Rahman, who has come to perform his second Haj with his mother, utilized every
bit of his stay in Mina, Arafat and Madinah in prayer and remembrance of God to
“cleanse the inner self.”
nbsp;
He said Islam is a religion of peace, love, coexistence, tolerance and
modernity. But due to the behavior of a few of us, it’s labeled as an
intolerant orthodoxy. He says that the image of Islam is being tarnished by a
small group of people and that Muslims must come forward to present before the
world the correct picture of their divine faith.
nbsp;
“The enormity of their ignorance of the Islamic history and its code of conduct
is mind-boggling. We should be united in fighting these elements for the cause
of Islam,” he said.
nbsp;
“Muslims should go to lengths to follow the basics, which say ‘be kind to your
neighbors, keep smiling when you meet others, pray and do charity.’ We should
serve humanity. We should not show hostility toward others, even to the
followers of other faiths. This is what Islam stands for. We should present
before the world a model through our behavior, nature and presentation. The
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) never used his sword to spread Islam;
rather he spread the religion through his virtues, behavior, tolerance and
righteousness. And this is what is needed to change today’s distorted image of
Islam.”
nbsp;
Talking about his Haj, Rahman said, “Allah made it very easy for us. And up
until now, I have enjoyed every bit of my stay in the holy land and I pray to
Allah to accept my pilgrimage.”
nbsp;
For him, the stoning ritual is a physical exercise that symbolizes internal
struggle: “It means the defeat of temptation and killing the devil inside
ourselves.”
nbsp;
“I would like to tell you that this year I got the most precious gift on my
birthday, Jan. 6. Allah gave me the opportunity to confine myself inside the
Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah and pray all through the day. Nothing could match
this experience and that too on my birthday; I am extremely delighted and
thankful to Allah,” he said.
nbsp;
Rahman said that prayers release his tension and give him a sense of
containment. He performs prayers despite heavy work pressure. “I am an artist,
but despite tremendous work pressure I never skip prayers,” he said. “I am very
punctual in offering the day’s all five prayers on time. This releases me from
tension and gives me hope and confidence that the Lord is with me, that this is
not the only world. It reminds me of the Day of Judgment.”
nbsp;
It was in the year 1989 that he and his family embraced Islam.
Talking about his reversion, Rahman said, “The wh ole process started with a
sequence of dream. It was in 1988. I was in Malaysia and had a dream of an old
man who was asking me to embrace Islam. For the first time, I did not take it
seriously, but then I saw the same dream several times and I discussed it with
my mother. She encouraged me to go ahead and to respond to the call of the
Almighty. Also, in 1988, one of my sisters fell seriously ill and in spite of
the family’s effort

Every trophy and award is important, special and very happily accepted. The
Phalke recognition is even more precious because it is a recognition and
endorsement from one's own family - the industry members.

How do you look at today's music?
(Shaking his head) I don't find any standard in either the music or the lyrics.
Among the music composers, only A.R.Rahman is innovative. I think that Rajesh
Roshan was the last music director with substance.
Would you like to sing for Rahman?

AR Rahman has been a huge fan of Shammi Kapoor's films. In fact he has seen

So when we asked him to sing any of Shammi Kapoor's song, we were surprised to
see a blank expression on his face. Hey this is very embarrassing.

I seem to have gone completely blank. I don't seem to remember any of the

Kapoor is a man who changed the way songs were sung and shot. It was a

Ada Music Review: Rahman’s Ada leaves you wanting for more Geshan Manandhar
  Saturday, May 31, 2008

It’s been a while we had not got chance to listen to the musical gems by the
musical maestro A R Rahman. Ada came as a surprise to me and with the bid to
remix songs as a competition this was surely going to be a power packed album.
The initial TV promos are also worth while and the black background with white
text and ample photos give you the overall feel of the movie. The inlays covers
are descriptive, narrative and pact the punch visually and in words. Let’s
scrutinize the songs in this album one by one.

The album kicks off with “Ishq Ada – Male version” impeccably crooned by Rashid
Ali. From the first guitar pluck you seem be getting deeper in the quick sand
in this song. The composition is groovy and lyrics define what love is and I
think Raqueeb Alam has penned a passionate piece of art and the singer has done
full justice to the composition and the lyric. The instrumentation is of the
fusion kind with guitars up front. Next number is “Hawa Sun Hawa” featuring the
silk voiced Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik in the vocals department. Nusrat Badr
has written a very heart felt lyric that highlights the need of two lovers to
meet and see each other. Composition and music is signature A R Rahman with
some synthetic music but very well blended with earthy instruments like flute,
piano, tabla etc. Consequently appears “Gumsum” sung by Sonu Nigam and Alka
Yagin in a euphoric fashion. Lyric by Nusrat Badr this time reminds of spring
of a new year, Rahman’s arrangement and
instrumentation truly stands out in this song. It’s a feel good song with
ample percussions from the conventional instruments and synthetic sounds to
support the arrangement. Subsequently its time for “Gulfisha”, for this track
the vocals have been lent by Sonu Nigan, Sunidhi Chauhan Viviane Chaix.
Starting with some crooning by Viviane the duo of Nigam and Chauhan have
executed the song in a classy way. Nusrat again scores with his impressive
lyric. Composition is relatively simple but the arrangement makes you adore
this song from the first listen. After it the next song is “Meherbaan” which is
vocalized by A R Rahman himself which packs a punch from the first note.
Starting with a piano rhythm when you hear Rahman’s voice you just fall in love
with this song. The lyric is beyond comparison by Raqueeb Alam that signifies
the need of love in one’s life. A very simple composition but the passion put
in this song by maestro makes it irresistible and you end up listening
 to it again and again.

At track 6 Chitra, Sukhwinder Singh with Naresh Iyer sing “Tu Mera Hai” penned
down by Badr. Talking about achievement of love the back vocals by Naresh is
the USP of this song. Sukhwinder sings in this song rather than just shouting,
no offense. The composition is amazing and the instrumentation go in sync with
the lyrics. Next track is “Hai Dard” vocalized by Udit Narayan Jha. Jha has
done a formidable job in this song. With tragic lyrics by Badr this song has
that dark feel in the composition department as well. Singer selection may be a
question in this song but overall it’s a good song saved primarily by Rahman’s
efforts. Again “Isha Ada” comes to view but this time the Female Version
crooned effortlessly by Parul Mishra. With an unplugged experience this song
resembles the male version but has its own qualities to be reckoned with. As
the male version this song is also fully packed with overflowing emotions.
Towards the end we have “Milo Wahan Wahan” executed in an
ideal way by Alka Yagnik Jayachandaran. Mainly the high notes are done in an
unspoiled manner. Bard’s lyrics stand out in this song and the composition is
also on target. The slow tempo and the right instrumentation make it easy to
like this track. Last track is “Meherbaan Instumental” on guitars by Sanjeev
Thomas. The sound is clean and spot on. It’s a very good style to end an album
with an instrumental piece and leave the audience wanting for more and more.

On the whole, getting a gem of an album by Rahman after a while was a good
experience. You can even remix “Gumsum” or “Gulfishan” as a part of the deal
with Rahman and Nokia at http://www.remixrahmansada.com so try becoming a DJ.
Regarding the album Rahman strikes again, be it old new singer selection mix,
composition, arrangement or the overall fell of the album. If you liked
Rahman’s songs in the past this is a must buy for you.Enjoy the stylish ada of
the maestro as he will never go out of fashion.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
  music review

  By movietalkies
  Tuesday May 27 9:15 PM
Abbas Tyrewala makes his directorial debut with Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, a
film which seems to be about, and for the youth. The music of the film has been
composed by the musical genius AR Rahman, while Tyrewala has written the lyrics
himself, and true to his style, there seems to be an entirely new syntax that
he seems to discover with his lyrics. Rahman obliges suitably, with a very
different kind of soundtrack, different, at least to the kind that he is
generally known for. Both manage their breakaways from the traditional, without
straying too far from the familiar. The resulting album is a mix of sounds and
words which are contemporary, young and fresh. The album of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane
Na has a total of seven songs, with one of them reappearing in a remixed
version as well. The voices are young and fresh for the most part, going well
with the cast of the film, also young and fresh.
The album opens with the peppy 'Kabhie Kabhie Aditi' sung by Rashid Ali. The
tone of the song may be peppy but its lyrics actually talk of profound
emotions, like love, loss and the philosophy of living life with a smile.
'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi/Zindagi main yun hi/koi apna lagta hai/who bichchad jaye
to/ek sapna lagta hai. Rashid sings the song with a flair that seems to belie
his age. There is a certain ease with which the song has been rendered, the
style, which is really catchy. This is a number which is bound to do extremely
well.
'Pappu Can't Dance', the second number in album is akin to the ubiquitous
'tapori' song, which was mandatory in Hindi films at a certain time. Sung by
Benny Dayal, Naresh Iyer, Satish Chakravarthy, Aslam, Blaze, Tanvi and
Bhargavi, the number is all about fun and masti. The band of young voices does
a very good job indeed in bringing out the mood of the song without going
overboard. More than anything, the song truly exhibits the versatility of
Rahman. This number appears again in the album, in a remixed version and packs
the same punch as it did in the orginal.
The third number of the album, 'Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai', appears twice in the
album, once in the female version sung by Runa, and then the male version by
Sukhwinder. Of course, the lyrics of the two differ slightly. In both its
versions, this song literally throbs with emotion. Coming to female version
first, the accompanying music is subtle and plays out like a throbbing
undercurrent running through the entire song. Runa gives a low key, emotionally
charged rendition of the song. The female version seems to have more angst than
the male version. Sukhwinder gives a masterly rendition as well. But it's
Runa's version which truly stands out. This song definitely ranks among the
best in the album along with the title track and 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi.'
'Nazrein Milana Nazrein Churana,'sung by Benny Dayal, Satish Chakravathy,
Sayonara, Darshana, Svetha, Bhargavi and Anupama is another fun song and has
been rendered very well. 'Tu Bole Main Boloon, sung by Rahman himself is the
song of the album. The song has the feel of an old fashioned jazz number.
Rahman's creates a perfect ambience for this romantic number with the small
flourishes with the piano, the trumpet and the jazz drums. The lyrics of the
song lend themselves easily to this kind of a lazy, romantic rendering 'Tu Bole
Glass Adha Khali/Main Boloon Adha Bhara/ Main Boloon Kitna Saara/Tu Bole Zara
Zara.' This song is definitely the best in the album and one cannot imagine
anyone else but Rahman singing it.
Rashid Ali and Vasundhara Das's 'Kahin To' is a simply written and composed
song, rendered in a simple manner by the singers. And it is this simplicity,
which is its hallmark of the number. The song has few flamboyant flourishes and
is rendered very touchingly by Rashid with Vasundhara providing him good
support. The number is touching specially the part where it goes 'Jaane Na
Kahan Woh Duniya Hai/ Jaane Na Woh Hai Bhi Ya Nahin/Jahaan Meri Zindagi Mujhse
Itni Khafaa Nahin.' This is one of those numbers where the lyrics, the music
and the rendition are in perfect harmony.
The music of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na has all the elements in it. It is young,
peppy, speaks the language of the youth, and most importantly, speaks the
language of love in contemporary times. Full credit to Rahman and Tyrewala for
their brilliant collaboration in this album.

[arr] Indiaglitz reviews ADA - An enchanting Rahman experience

Ada... a way of life Music ReviewPrint
E-mail thisAda... a way of life - An enchanting Rahman
experience document.write('Savio Zacharia, ') Savio Zacharia, IndiaGlitz
[Friday, May 30, 2008]The music of “ ADA ” comes as a breath of fresh
air. There is everything one can wish for in a complete music album – romantic
duets, the pain of separation, the heart rendering cry of a questioning soul,
the playfulness of youth - every mood, every sound, and each word captured in
an enchanting experience.
Born out of passion of Tanveer Ahmad (producer and director), comes a story
of love, passion, justice, need, sacrifice, suffering. Ayaan Ahmad Nauheed
Cyrusi have given powerful performances as the main protagonists.
The album opens with ‘Ishq Ada Hai’. The male version has been crooned by
Rashid Ali who seems to Rahman’s favourite for now making his presence felt in
Rahman’s ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ too. The track is very much unlike Rahman with
intensifying vocals and guitar interludes. The track has s sufi touch to it and
isn’t Rahman’s finest of the album, yet keeps you tuned.
The female version brings in another newcomer Parul Mishra in her complete
innocence carrying the lyrics forward. The voice is refreshing and draws you to
the soulful expression of emotions. The female version indeed over rules the
male version.
‘Hawa Sun Hawa’ mesmerizes you right from the start with Alka Yagnik’s
humming. The melodious track reaches the splendid status with Sonu Nigam’svoice
and the flute work. The track is complte srene , feel good number with Rahman’s
stamp all over it.
‘Gumsum’ brings in Sonu and Alka once again for a number that is more on the
peppier side ccarrying the grandeur feel often associated with Yash Chopra
films. The track is sweet and romantic enough to reignite that romance from
within.
‘Gulfisha’ brings in well orchestrated music. The track has been crooned by
Sonu and Sunidhi Chauhan. The track truly belongs to Sunidhi who carries the
sleek genre of the track. The track does remind us of a few compositions from
‘Rangeela’.
Rahman finally steps into the vocals with ‘Meherbaan’ a soft, smooth, highly
romantic track .Rahman’s voice enhanced by the lyrics brings in complete
serenity. This track is no doubt the finest of the album. The instrumental
version of the track too is splendid.
‘Tu Mera Hai’ opens with the melodious voice of Chitra on a high note. Chitra
who has been away from the Hindi playback circuit impresses with this
passionate track. The obsession theme of the track is further brought out by
Sukwinder Singh who does his bit to raise the tempo after his contribution to
Rahman’s ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ album.
‘Hai Dard’ brings in Udit Narayan to a deeply remorseful track. The track
which carries the theme of separation fails to make a mark and is averagely
sounding.
‘Milo wahan wahan’ calls for deep attention towards the lyrics. The track
brings in the melodious Alka Yagnik but moreover brings in a name very much
popular on the southern front-Jayachandran. Jayachandran croons to excellence
to a Hindi number and soon draws you close to serenity.
To conclude, ADA brings immense talent with the voices of Udit Narayan, Sonu
Nigam, Alka Yagnik, A R Rahman, Chitra, Sukhwinder Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan,
Rashid Ali Richa Sharma romances with Nusrat Badr’s lyrics. The film has 10
songs that caters to various moods and promises some great compositions.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na Music ReviewPrint
E-mail thisJaane Tu Ya Jaane Na - Youthfully Romantic!
document.write('SAVIO ZACHARIA, ') SAVIO ZACHARIA, IndiaGlitz [Friday, May
23, 2008]‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ music releases very much the Aamir Khan
style under the hands of mentor Shammi Kapoor. The movie produced by Aamir Khan
might just prove to be the perfect launch pad for nephew Imraan Khan. The movie
promises more with director Abbas Tyrewala penning down some beautiful lines
and with the ace A.R.Rahman at work.
The album opens to some fine guitar beats in complete symphony with the
youthful and melodious voice of debutant Rashid Ali supporting the charming
looks of yet another debutant Imraan Khan. The track ‘Kabhi Kabhi Aditi
Zindagi’ , has already been creating the required buzz with the current promos
and is sure to be remembered as one of the top tracks of the year.
Anupama, Benny Dayal, Blazee, Tanvi, Darshana, Satish Subramanium and Aslam
bring in the ‘Pappu can’t dance’ number . The song has already had its share of
hype thanks to the lyrical links to bollywood hunk Salman Khan. Though Aamir
has cleared the apparent links to Salman by stating that Salman is indeed a
better dancer, the audiences may still carry the Salman-Pappu linkage.
Though the track reminds you of Rahman’s ‘Girlfriend ‘number from ‘Boys’, it
fails to make the same impact. The music is loud and calls for all the Pappu’s
to prove their might. The remix version in indeed racy and the track is set to
do well with the ongoing promotion.
‘Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai( Aditi)’ has been rendered by yet another newcomer
Runa. The lines of this one along with the soft background beats enhanced by
the vocals provides for a great track for those lovelorn or solitude seeking
personalities.
The male version of the track ‘Jaane Tu Meri Kya Hai(Jai)’ crooned by the
brazen Sukwinder Singh grabs you with the very first go. Sukwinder makes you
feel for the broken hearted and takes you to just another world.
'Nazrein Milaana Nazrein Churaana' yet again brings in a bunch of talent in
the form of Benny Dayal, Satish Chakravarthy, Naresh Iyer, Darshana, Shwetha,
Tanvi, Bhargavi, Anupama. The composition is very much like a
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy saga but it just shows you how versatile Rahman can get. The
track though isn’t the finest around but tends to grow on you after a while.
Some good promotion will boost it further.
'Tu Bole Main Boloon', which apparently is the title track of the movie,
brings in some beautiful composition enhanced by Rahman’s vocals. The lines of
the track too draw some attention. The track brings in the western jazz feel
and is one of those quietly funny yet romantic numbers that explore the
differences between a girl and boy.
'Kahin To Hogi Ho' equates to being exactly what ‘Pehla Nasha’ was to ‘Joh
Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’. The soulfully power packed track brings forth Rashid Ali
to deliver his second splendid number on his debut album. Vasundhra Das
provides some back up on the vocals. This one is sure to be a favorite amongst
the ones in love or the lovelorn listeners. The serenity just grabs you
instantly as the track unveils. As for Rashid Ali , he seems to be Rahman’s
next Naresh Iyer(who made his mark with ‘Ru Ba Ru’ in ‘Rang De Basanti’).
On the whole, Rahman returns to such youthful campus love story after a
hiatus but still proves he’s got enough romance running right through. The
album backed by Abbas Tyrewala’s lyrics provides enough support for his
directorial venture. As for Imraan , looks like the music promises the same
platform that Uncle Aamir Khan had with ‘Qayamant Se Qayamat Tak’ and ‘Joh
Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’.

[arr] Ada - Blog review 4

2008-05-28 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Ada Music - A Review
A.R Rahman only puts his fans in a dilemma with this album. It is very hard
to pinpoint one song as a favourite. With Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na music also
released simultaneously, I am in a state of utter confusion. Anyways, I love
this album so much that I had to pen down what I thought of Ada's musical
journey by ARR.

Ishq Ada hai - Rashid Ali
Rashid has a voice that could have the narcotic feeling on you. Especially the
varying pitches at which he sings, leaves you in a phase where you don't want
the song to end. Personally, I love the part where he sings - ..ishq gila hai,
ishq sila hai, ishq ibaadat ka silsila hai around 1.20. There's so much pain
and power at the same time. And the careless guitar strumming throughout the
song and in certain pauses is brilliant.

Hawa Sun Hawa - Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik
Alka Yagnik sounds a lot younger than her other recent songs. Whenever Sonu
says hawa, there is a hollowness to his voice that makes you feel like a gush
of air just passed across you. Beautiful flute interludes. I've always felt
Sonu's pronunciations are brilliant. A completely refreshing song.

Gumsum - Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik
What variations! Sonu Nigam is on a roll. Just listen to the way he opens the
song. The notes are hit bang on target. It makes your neck go backward and
forward. Very catchy beats. And the bass guitar (??) or the drums(??) at the
end of song surprise you. Totally unexpected and it makes you want to pose like
the guitarist of a rock band and strum the air.

Gulfisha - Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan Vivian Chaix
The song opens with Vivian's chanting of what sounds to me like Parseltongue.
And Sunidhi is one person who can beautifully carry off a base voice as well as
high notes. The way both Sonu Sunidhi sing the word Ada is very
flirtatious. Finally, there is an alaap done by Sunidhi which gradates to
Vivian's chanting and closes on a very mysterious note.

Meherbaan - AR Rahman
Oh my god !! I'm stoned. This song gives you a sense of hope and the feeling of
being loved by all. He surprises you with his pitch at the end of the song
which is very unlike the soft start. I have a thing for ARR's way of singing
words with the Z sound in them. The man and his magical strings. Could it get
any better? From the be-swaadi ratiyan in Guru's Tere Bina to the be-zameen and
be-aasman in meherban, you couldn't ask for more, trust me.

Tu mera hai - Chitra, Sukhwinder Singh, Naresh Iyer
This sounds very familiar. I really can't place it now. Chitra sounds very
Bollywoodish, and her octaves for 'Ya Rab Shukriya' match Sukhwinder's right
amount of power for a song of love. I had gooseflesh when I heard it for the
first time. Naresh's interludes have a twinge of pain that makes you want to
sympathize with him.

Hai Dard - Udit Narayan
This one is going to take me a while to like. A song of lament and when by Udit
Narayan, you expect a twist in the movie when this comes about. It falls short
when compared with the other songs in the album.

Ishq Ada hai (female) - Parul Mishra
Intoxicating. Parul's voice is so wholesome and round. Its like a very sharp
knife slicing through butter. She's 20 years old but has an addictive sound
quality about her voice. This is a little different from the male version in
its organization and inducement of a classical touch. Her alaaps are brilliant.
What pitching ! I hope ARR uses Parul more in songs to come.

Milo Wahan Wahan - Alka Yagnik, Jayachandran
Jayachandran is the link. The opening of this song is the BGM from Kannathil
Muthamittal. These type of songs are Alka's forte in Bollywood. She comfortably
carries the song, while I feel Jayachandran pronunciations sound a little
enforced. But if you concentrate on his voice quality, that's not a problem at
all. Is there a male chorus singing along with Jayachandran at the end ? It
sounds as one voice actually.

Meherbaan (Instrumental)
I feel so happy just talking about this song. If ARR's voice is also to be
slotted as instrumental, then this is rightly classified. Listen to the portion
from 1.20 to 1.40 and the guitar transition from then onwards, his voice sounds
nothing less than an instrument.
All of us have to be Meherbaan to ARR for giving us such a beautiful album.
(Meherbaan means grateful)

[arr] JTYJN - Blog Review 5

2008-05-28 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na: Music Review
A R Rehman's speciality lies in that he knows what he is making. While with
other music composers generally songs 'work well' or 'fit' in situations, A R
Rehman's music generally can tell you what the situation is.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is one such example where the movie's mood can be guessed
from the light music of the album.

The opening song of the album is 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi'. Don't go on the title of
the song, as the song is a pretty soothing number and Rehman's touch is clear
from this very first song. The song is a feat in the new voice of Rashid Ali,
as the lyrics of the song are fine too.

Rehman and 'Saala' make a good combination. At least that seems to be the
thinking of uncle producer Aamir Khan when you listen to second song 'Pappu
Can't Dance'. And though I haven't got the importance of Saala in the song like
it was in Roobaroo, I can't deny the goodness of song. Expect it to be an
instant hit. And the dirigidi-da-da-da-da-daa sounds in the background make
sure you don't forget it's Rehman. Interestingly, the song has a few lines
dedicated to uncle Aamir's debut Papa Kehte hain too.

The third number of the album, 'Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai' seems to be a good song
that may last long, though there is a little monotonicity in the song. The song
is sung well by Runa Rizvi and Rehman's music is good. The song doesn't have
much length but has a male version later. Lyrics of the song are also worth
listening to.

The fourth one, a very light 'Nazrein Milana' is another good number. The song
has a number of partying voices from six singers that include Naresh Iyer too,
giving a good listening experience. Though there is not much to look forward to
in lyrics of the song, music is quite good as Rehman experiments with rock
sounds in a light party song.

Only one sentence would be enough for the next song. The song, 'tu bole main
bolun' is sung by A R Rehman.

Well, the song is not like Khwaja Mere Khwaja or Luka Chhupi, but there are a
lot many new things in the song to listen to. I can't exactly place which
school the song comes from but it has a slight clubbish feeling attached to it,
which comes easy with the saxophone's sound. And though the song is not a
heavyweight (like examples I gave) but it's not a very light number either. It
short, listen to it to know it completely.

The sixth song of the album 'Kahin to hogi wo' is a lovely, romantic song sung
well by Rashid Ali and Vasundhara Das. Especially Rashid is wonderful. The song
seems to have the ingredients necessary to make a song last long and I expect
it will be heard for months. In the end, the song has the chorus effect which
was generally used in older songs and has been tried by composers at various
times.

The seventh song on the album is a second version of 'Jaane tu Mera Kya hai',
in a male voice this time, sung by Sukhwinder Singh. The mighty voice of
Sukhwinder suits the almost-only-sad-song of the album well and the song goes a
bit better than the female version, even though both the versions seem to have
almost completely different tastes after listening to the two versions
alternately.

The eigth and final song of the movie is a remix like in most other albums. And
unfortunately, like most other remixes of today, the song doesn't have much
stuff in it and has been experimented with a little too much it seems.

Anyways, with almost all the songs of the album in at least above average
category, one remix doesn't make a difference. The album is overall a great
compilation and A R Rehman deserves the credit for that. Listen to it. Hope
you'll enjoy a lot.

[arr] Buzz18 reviews JTYJN -- Take a Bow !!!

2008-05-28 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
MUSIC REVIEW: Rahman's Jaane Tu... There's a neat little surprise in this
album!
By Chandrima Pal . Buzz18 May 27, 2008

I am not what you'd call a die-hard fan of AR Rahman but I do make it a
point to listen to every album that comes from this master music composer.
And as someone who has been following Rahman's career right from his early
days, I eagerly look out for his compositions in the hope of being treated to
something new and eclectic. And the musician seldom disappoints.
Rahman's last cinematic outing was Jodhaa Akbar. While the music of Jodhaa
Akbar was a tad too honest to the period drama, there were these immensely
hummable and soul-stirring tracks as a gift from Rahman. The sufiana Khwaja is
a case in point.
Moving on to this week's release Jaane Tu….
The first thing that will strike you about the music of Jaane Tu…is its
simplicity. The album marks a clear departure from the current crop of film
scores that are heavy on production and effects. A weakness even Rahman has
been accused of often.
But Rahman's choice and use of musical instruments and voices in this album
is brilliant, as is his choice of musical genres.
Jaane Tu... features a bunch of fresh new faces, and is the launch pad of
Aamir Khan's nephew Imran. From the director's note and the first look of the
film, it seems to be a teenage love story and the music smacks of candy floss,
bubble gum, soda pops and roses. But certainly with a difference.

Track One: Kabhi Kabhi Aditi, is heavily influenced by contemporary RB and a
bit of hip-hop with a nice guitar and vocals. Sung by Rashid Ali, the song has
a very interesting rhythmic structure and movement that will find you clicking
your fingers and tapping your foot.
Track Two: Pappu Can't Dance: Ah! So, this is the infamous song that
allegedly spoofs Salman. Well, politics apart, the song is tailor-made for the
dance floor with a bunch of singers including rapper Blaze (who was part of the
Rang De Basanti playback team) infusing it with great energy.
Track Three: Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai is once again very RB with a haunting
melody and a soulful rendition by Runa that could give you goosebumps. Once
again, the minimalistic arrangement gives it a rather unique feel. The same
song is rendered by Sukhwinder Singh later and the singer lends his
characteristic intensity and power to the song, taking to a different level
altogether.
Track Four: Nazrein Milaana Nazrein Churaana, is a zestful, upbeat song by a
bunch of singers that is very MTV, very college canteen musical in its feel.
Track Five: Tu Bole... Main Boloon: This is what I 'd say the piece de
resistance of the album. In each of his film scores, Rahman reserves the most
challenging and perhaps the best track for himself. If it was Luka Chhuppi with
Lata Mangeshkar in Rang De Basanti, and Khwaja in Jodhaa Akbar, it is Tu Bole
in this one.
The song is a delicious swing jazz number, something you would have never
heard in a Hindi film. The legendary Ranjit Barot's brush work on the drums,
seductive pianos, a nice thick bass track complement Rahman's jazz avatar
beautifully. Listen to the track with your eyes closed and you will be
transported straight to a Broadway Musical in late '40s/'50s. And how can we
not mention that excellent trumpet playing by Adam Rapa! Bravo!

Track Six: Kahin To by Rashid Ali and Vasundhara Das however is bit of a
letdown as it sounds too much like one of the biggest international hits of the
'80s. The scale changing chorus crescendo, the keyboards and the melody will
remind you of a certain George Benson classic love ballad (I'd rather not name
the song here).
Pappu Can't Dance resurfaces as a remix at the end of the album and Rahman
shows off his ease with this genre as always.
While the melodies of almost all the songs have high recall, the lyrics
somehow fail on that count. Don't get me wrong, Abbas Tyrewala does a decent
job of staying away from banality and yet trying to hum the lyrics (other than
the chorus lines) could be bit of a challenge thanks to their complexity. But
that is just a personal opinion and most of you out there may welcome the
verses, which are a mix of the profound and the quirky.
One last observation, the soundtrack of Jaane Tu is as good as any top-notch
international production. Considering the album has been produced entirely in
the country, it speaks volumes about the technicians and musicians involved.
Take a bow, ladies and gentlemen!

  Verdict: Go get it!

I hear it so many times that I just have to say this: KEEP WAITING!!
IT'S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. IT'S ALREADY BEEN DONE! You keep hoping
that each ARR album will be the next Taal, Dil Se, etc., well good
luck. So thankful that ARR is not a static composer living in the
past and rehashing the same predictable stuff. It's normal to like or
dislike in degrees each of ARR's creations, but for God's sake, stop
hoping for that elusive fantasy album that will never materialize!

This kind of thinking by fans plagues all great artists, by the way.

If that is the case, I want to know what prompted the decision to let Rashid
sing. Usually Rahman has many
great singers doing background vocals on the lines of Harini, Suresh Peters,
Karthik and many others and then
they eventually got a solo song. but how come we never saw Rashid doing that
transition or was it never
documented while he kept helping with harmony?

As a matter of fact Rashid Ali sounds awesome and fresh and will go places for

Any reason why no credits were given to the person who played the
trumpet so beautifully in this track? Many have called it a
saxaphone, but it's in fact a trumpet. It's not a synth trumpet.

  Yes Arvind,
I do clearly remember that interview.
I loved every bit of it..
i remember that i was writing my class 10th board exams those days and in
between i took break from studies for an hr and watched the whole show .

i loved the description how arr said like O rey chori was the most difficult
song for him to compose in that movie as it included indian folk and western
bits, And when clubed together they should not sound like two different songs.

And it was so funny how Udit Narayan commented ARR sir is very hardworking.
.the plays and sings the whole night ...and makes us also to sing the whole
night
.and he was recording for the song Ghanan Ghanan and in between does a
mistake and den says..sorry sir..once more

And it was superb the way amir khan was describing the songs..i remember wen he
said that in the song Radha kaise na jale ..it displays the expression of
jealousy beautifully. ..Jab radha gaa rahi hai to tabla baichain ho raha
hai..Wen the girl is singing the beats of Tabla shows restlesness of the girl!

It was really a great show altogether..
i really wish to find the video of that somewhere in youtube..

Thanx for reminding the show it brought in so many memories

~Love music love life

Hi Priyadharshini,

Thanks for that!!
The video that u have posted is from the documentary about Indian Film Music
that was aired on a foreign channel named ARTE (Is it french?)

What Pavan is asking is a different one The making of Lagaan music which
was telecasted on DD was a superb program, in which each and every song was
discussed.

I stil distinctly remember a few bits from the program:

- ARR says that it is difficult to put two different genre's in one song (folk
and western classical -- O Rey Chori). It will make it sound like two
different songs. But, he made sure that the my heart it speaks bit fits in
well and blends seamlessly and sounds like one complete song!

- Aamir sings aaja re aaja re... aaja re aaja re (Mitwa). He says it is a
wonderful motivational song. Then he says if some one is upset or disappointed,
one listening of this song is enough to boost him up!
He also mentions that ARR's songs take time to grow on you, but once it does
aapke khoon mein chad jaata hai (It gets right into your blood)

Even I was thinking about this programme sometime back Would be great if
someone has it!!!

BTW, I do have the full documentary (the ARTE documentary about Indian Film
Music) in good quality... I downloaded whn it was posted in the group only! If
someone doesnt have it and want it now, I can upload it...

I remeber watching Making of Laagan's Music on DD Metro, weeks before the actual
release of the movie.

The Making had everything.. .Each and every song was discussed in detail...It
was a very good proggrame.Rahman was praised superbly by Jaaved Shaab and
Ashu

I know, its very difficult..but does anyone by chance has the video of that?,It
would be great viewing for all of our fans..

Does anyone remember seeing that Making?
