I am lovin' the album.

I feel inclined to mention the track 'Meeting Marcel'. In this track, if you
listen carefully, there is a classic Buddhist chanting going on, a unique
Buddhist flavor has been added. It sounds stunning.
As far as I can remember, this is the first time any Indian music composer has
used Buddhist chants, let alone in a track.

C'mon guys, (Afro Nisha) is not a singer! It's really funny
to read all the comments about the voice being 'suspiciously' similar to
Rahman. Well, that's because it is Rahman.

I don't think Afro Nisha is even a person. If anything, it could be the
English title of the Tamil 'Kurukuru Kan' or it could even be a new genre.

I can only say one thing for sure, the singer in 'Kurukuru Kan(Afro Nisha)' is
Rahman.

It was a hot Sunday afternoon in Pune and we found ourselves in the midst of
nearly two dozen youngsters from all over India. Brimming with excitement,
the group is Rahman’s very own barmy army, in Pune specially to attend a
 Rahman show.

Every time the maestro plans a concert, this group of boys — and a handful
of girls— converge at the host city. While this may sound like a regular fan
club, the members insist it isn’t. “We are almost like an official fan club.
Rahman recognises most of us and that adds credibility to our group,” says
22-year-old Nazeef Mohammed from Bangalore. But it took nearly a decade to
attain this almost official fan club status.

“In the mid-1990s, during Roja, I became a huge fan of Rahman. The Internet
wasn’t so big and information on him was scarce. At that time, I would read
everything possible I could find about him. I used to think I’m his biggest
fan,” says Gopal Shrinivasan, a Hyderabad-based financial consultant. But as
the network opened up, I realised I was wrong and that there are many people
who revere him.” On January 1, 1999, Shrinivasan started a group fan club
online with a handful of members to start with. But over time, it gained
popularity to log in thousands of registered members including several from
 Delhi.

Though active online, the group didn’t witness any activity of consequence
till 2005. “Rahman had announced his Bangalore concert and we all knew we
had to be a part of this somehow,” recounts Shrinivasan who is also the
group moderator. “About 20 of us converged from all over the country and for
four days we did voluntary work for the concert organizers. That is when we
all really bonded for the first time.”

Ever since, the group has been hosting regular meets in Mumbai. “We try to
meet once a month to jam and enjoy Rahman’s music at my place in Andheri,”
adds Swapnil Mistry, a professional singer.

In the background, excited chatter and conversation flows easily. What’s
surprising is that the group — though a melting pot of cultures — uses Tamil
as their first language. “Many of us learnt how to read, write and talk in
Tamil because of Rahman’s music,” says 29 -year-old Anand Swamy, a
Mumbaikar, who has a peculiar superstition before a Rahman concert. “Every
time I attend his concert I shave my head,” he confesses, a tad sheepishly.
It’s easy to believe that as moderator of the group, Shrinivasan is probably
the most level-headed till the group spills the beans on him. “Gopal buys a
copy of every cassette and CD with AR Rahman written on it. He has eight CDs
of Bombay just because the album was launched with different jacket covers,”
 laughs Mistry.

The stories are endless — at times hilarious and at times moving — but their
passion for the maestro’s music evokes respect. “Every time we ask him what
he wants for his birthday, he says we should help the needy on that day,”
says 31-year-old Vithur who distributes food to the poor every Sunday in
Chennai on behalf of the group. No wonder some people say that Rahman’s so
 down-to-Earth, he has a hunch.

Fellows,
This is serious and sad. T-Series who had bagged Rahmans top audio contracts
for last year including slumdog has released a cheap, real cheap signature
collection containing absurd and horrible cover versions of several of Rahman's
tracks, including Maa Tujhe Salaam.
Just listen to Faana and Maa Tujhe Salaam...i am sure you will puke.
Listen to this horrible piece of garbage here and you will know what i mean.
The disgusting cover versions are for those tracks for which T-series does not
have rights. But then why do a cover? Get yourself to see.

20Collection% 20Part%201- id-148927. .php
This is by far the worst way to capitilise of Rahman's popularity post academy
awards. This cheap product has to be withdrawn from the market if possible.
Else, we totally boycott this from our catalouges.
I bought the last remaining 5 copies from a nearby music world and threw it in
trashcan...
Is there a way to let Rahman's management know about this?

Who's AR Rahman?

It is quite amusing to see how geo- political differences can influence the
coverage of events

that have cultural acceptability across borders. KUNAL MAJUMDAR scans Dawn and
The News of

Pakistan, and The Daily Star and The New Age of Bangladesh in search of two
words ‘AR Rahman’

and ‘Oscars’.

Posted Sunday, Mar 01 15:59:04, 2009

While the Indian media went overboard with the coverage of Oscars, the
Pakistani media tried

its best to ignore the Indian connection. The leading newspaper Dawn has no
mention of AR

Rahman’s win. In its lead article – ‘Slumdog scoops eight of its ten
nominations’ (23 Feb,

2009); it does mention that the movie is based in Mumbai and gives brief
outline of the story.

Beyond that, it simply ignores the Indians who won the Oscars. A feeling that
Dawn

intentionally wanted to stress on the poverty angle of the story comes with the
accompanying

articles and photographs of slum kids.

The News, of the Jang Group, was no different. The article -- ‘Slumdog
Millionaire’ wins Oscar

gold at 81’st Academy Awards (February 24, 2009) tells the readers that Slumdog
is small-budget

British movie on “A ragtag group of Indian orphans”. The writer mentions how
the cast and the

crew of the movie was present to accept the best film award, which included
“several school

children who were plucked from Mumbai’s shantytowns to appear in the movie”.
AR Rahman again

ignored!

The Daily Times also ignores the Indian winners. However, it has a more
sympathetic approach.

It quotes Danny Boyle offering gratitude to Mumbaikars and saying they even,
“dwarf even this

guy (Oscar statue)”. The newspaper is the only one to carry a photograph of
the cast and crew

of the film, where you can see Anil Kapoor, AR Rahman and Rasul Pookuthy.

One wonders how many Pakistanis actually know about Penelope Cruz and Hugh
Jackman, compared to

AR Rahman!

Bangladeshi awareness

Bangladeshi newspapers seem to be much more aware about the Indians in the
movie. In an article

– Oscar Glory for ‘Slumdog’(February 24, 2009), The Daily Star mentions AR
Rahman’s win quite

prominently. The newspaper calls Slumdog Millionaire a “feel-good film about a
Mumbai tea boy

who rises from poverty and enters a television quiz show to win millions and
find the love of

his life”. Quite a contrast to Pakistani media’s definition. It goes on to
mention that in

spite of being directed and produced by Englishmen, many Indians claim it to be
their own. A

very just portray of the debate in India on the movie. The article also
mentions about Resul

Pookutty and the best documentary – Smile Pinki. Photographs alongside have AR
Rahman with his

two Oscar statues.

‘AR Rahman wins Golden Globe’ was the front-page story on The New Age (February
24, 2009). The

newspaper used Reuter’s input and made Rahman’s win the peg of the story. The
writer spoke

about the versatility of Rahman’s music and his other achievements. While
other western actors

and films did get a mention, but it didn’t dominate the story unlike the
Pakistani coverage.

It is quite amusing to find how geo- political differences can influence the
coverage of events

that have cultural acceptability across borders.

I second this idea. It would be wonderful if we got it on cd since for us,
living outside of India, it is hard to get hold of a nokia phone with
Connections.

Vijay / Gopal,

Can this message be passed on to the concerned, Please?

I came across all the songs of connections by ARR in youtube. The quality is
excellent. I also found few sites carrying those online to listen or download.

It is better to release Connections Album in CD format officially so that the
piracy can be controlled. We all fans will buy the original for sure, instead
of listening them through other sources. Not everyone will have or having the
new Nokia phones that carry those songs exclusively.

Thanks
Sath Murthy.

Christchurch:
Batting ace Sachin Tendulkar is extremely elated by India's showing at the
Oscars.

It is a brilliant achievement. For the entire nation, it is a very proud
moment, Tendulkar

said this morning.

The master blaster, who had had a word with A R Rahman a couple of days ago,
was confident that
the musical genius will walk away with the honours.

Rahman's contribution to music has been immense and this award is only a mere
reflection of

what he has been able to contribute to music and to India.

I had spoken to him not only about this, but about other albums as well. He
has always been
able to produce something special in every album, Tendulkar said.

Rahman won two Oscars - for the best original score and the best song.

Mad about Rahman, dil se These fans live and breathe A R Rahman's music,
finds
Sharmishta Koushik

It was the year 1992. The film Roja was released and with it, a new music
sensation blossomed in the Indian film industry, attracting droves of fans,
mesmerized by his melodies. Their chotti si asha is simply to have the pleasure
of listening to A R Rahman's music and perhaps, watching him perform live, and
if they were really lucky, say a few words to the musical genius in person.
Meet the A R Rahman Fans.
What started off as an e-group, set up by Gopal Srinivasan, a
Bangalore-based consultant, is, today, a veritable database of all things
Rahman. From several media interviews to rare recordings of his tracks and the
inside information on when a new album will be released, these die-hard fans
are truly connoisseurs of Rahman's art. The intent behind establishing this
group was straightforward — to use the power of the internet to network with
Rahman's fans around the world so that we could share the joy of listening to
his music. In many ways, it is Rahman himself who is responsible for the
popularity of this group — his music and his appeal cutting across barriers. I
am guilty of initially under-estimating the global reach of his music — little
did we realize that we would have people from so many countries across the
world joining in, says Gopal Srinivasan. And indeed, today, the e-group has
over 13,000 members.
On a rather sultry Sunday evening, a few members of the group in Bangalore
gathered in front of the rose garden in Cubbon Park to talk about their
passion. Quite befitting, considering that for most of them, their love affair
with A R Rahman's music began with the film Roja (rose), and like his music,
their devotion to his talent has only increased from strength to strength. Says
Kangan Upadhyay, who works in a software company, We heard the songs of Roja
before they were officially released. And although I didn't know the language,
I could relate to those songs.''
And she gives credit to the music director for her superb scores in her II
PU exam. At that time, the music of Alaipayuthe was released, and I kept
listening to it all the time while studying. I scored 99% in Maths. I kept
humming the songs in my mind even as I was writing the paper,'' she recalls
with excitement.
The way Rahman's compositions revolutionized Indian film music is something
the fans immensely respect. He brought in a whiff of freshness,'' says Balaji
Rajagopal, a chartered accountant. He brought to Indian films a sound which
was, until then, only heard in jingles,'' says Chandrashekhar Ganesh, a techie.
Earlier, viewers would walk
out of the theatre for a smoke when the songs would come on. Rahman's music
changed all that,'' says Gomtesh Upadhyay aka Gomzy, a techie.
He's even a good singer,'' says Vithun Kumar, a BE student. Adds Shahnawaz
Gaffoor, a techie, His music is international.''
Not surprisingly, Rahman's concerts are always a grand event, akin to
international acts performing in India. And these fans ensure they are there to
watch Rahman live. Most of them took off to Chennai recently, when Rahman
performed there for a concert organized by The Times of India. In fact, it was
during the 2005 concert in Bangalore when the city's fans met each other in
person. They volunteered backstage and even had T-shirts created especially for
the event.
Rehearsals are when they get to interact with the maestro. Some of the
members have even met him at his residence in Chennai. Once, I went to meet
him at his place. As he was busy he told me to come the next day. He asked me
if I was a non-vegetarian. Since I wasn't, he ensured that vegetarian food was
ordered for me,'' says Prabhu Krishnamurthy, a techie.
During the 2005 concert, they even gifted Rahman a montage of all his album
covers, about 94 — both film and non-film scores. It now adorns a wall in his
studio. And needless to say, if a fan wants to meet him at the studio, those
from this e-group are allowed right in. Rahman has even dedicated a colouring
book for children, released during the Pray For Me Brother tour, to the e-group
in November, 2007.
The members definitely deserve such a token of appreciation, considering
they have taken pains to count the number of musical genres he has explored.
According to them, his music spans about 36-38 genres.
The Bangalore-based fans meet up from time to time, if someone gets hold of
the latest copy of Rahman's album or a rare DVD of his work. They recently met
to watch a behind-the-scenes DVD of the musical Bombay Dreams, which shows
Rahman actually composing some of the tunes.

There's a statue of Don Bradman at the Cathedral End of the Adelaide Oval,
where he appears to be dancing down the track and lofting the ball straight
over the bowler's head. The bat is above his left ear, his knees are bent and
the eyes are looking upwards, watching the ball soar into the horizon of his
home ground. It was fitting that Sachin Tendulkar chose the venue to bring up
an immaculately-crafted hundred, the kind which is said to have put Bradman so
far ahead of the rest.

There wouldn't have been a better period film (atleast as of now) to show
Rahman's class.

It wasn't an innings with any distinct shade, rather one that covered the
entire spectrum. Walking in to a standing ovation, he didn't score off the
first 18 balls. Soon after he had eased into first gear, he set the stage with
a flurry of fours. The first was a simple, yet glorious straight drive off
Brett Lee; the fourth was hammered past Mitchell Johnson, the bowler. The skies
were clear but it would have been fitting if a rainbow hung over the arena.

An innings with as much variety and class as JA.

Bradman rated his 254 at Lord's as his finest innings, simply because each
stroke went exactly where he intended. It was interesting to hear Tendulkar
talk about the first couple of straight drives here, saying how the ball
travelled precisely where he wanted it to go. These are phases which come and
go, he said, and you know when you're hitting the ball well. You need to wait
for that moment.

So Rahmanesque :)

He signed off with a cheeky ramp over the slips, making full use of Lee's pace
and bounce, and rounded off an innings which had almost everything.

So does JA end with a Bajan.

I might sound silly. But I am blessed to be in the same era as Rahman and
Tendulkar. When both Rahman and Tendulkar strike the joy multiplies and when
India wins and the Movie becomes a hit...the joy is only unlimited.

Note: Tendulkar came back with a magnificent century in the DLF cup in 2006
after a shoulder surgery -
http://content-www.cricinfo.com/dlfcup/content/current/story/259587.html ,
around which time Rahman came with the audio of Guru after almost an year of
hiatus (in Hindi and had only two releases in Tamil - JOK and Varalaru) after
RDB -

A.R.Rahman Sachin Tendulkar - Destiny' twins?

A startling but very logical coincidences between 2 of
the gr8est men of 90's/..they characterised the
90's and were icons of the youth at that
  time(including me)..just see the startling
  similarities between these 2:

  Comprehensive similarities between A.R.Rahman and
  Sachin Tendulkar:

  Entry into their respective fields:
  A.R.Rahman: 1992
  Sachin Tendulkar: 1989

They were an instant hit because:
A.R.Rahman: Blasting music, classical songs at a very
  young age
Sachin Tendulkar: Swashbuckling batting and a great
cricketing sense at a very young age

How they stood out from others?
A.R.Rahman: First to bring digital touch to Indian
music and compose fusion that no one else dares to
  think off
Sachin Tendulkar: First to explore the first 15-over
restriction, score centuries at bouncy, tough tracks
  like Perth.

  As time moved on:
A.R.Rahman: Stopped producing blasting music, instead
delivered Classical melodies like Taal swades out of
  maturity.
Sachin Tendulkar: Stopped going over the top to
bowlers, instead played exquisite drives and late cuts
and produced innings with a lot of maturity

  Character similarity:
A.R.Rahman: Shy towards media and lets his keyboard
  answer his critics
Sachin Tendulkar: Shy towards media and lets his bat
  answer his critics

  Media point of view:
A.R.Rahman: Darling of Mumbai and London press
Sachin Tendulkar: Darling of Mumbai and London press

  International attention:
A.R.Rahman: Admired by Andrew Lloyd Webber , Micheal

q :- How was Life before you got your first break ?. The struggles faced ??

I did one album . i.e. Punjabi Songs in South Holland . It was a combination of
folk songs ; traditional PUnjabi Music and western style. It came out very well
and people liked it. That CDs were given to everyone in Bollywood. It was a
combination of Jazz Music, country music etc

Q :- How did you get your first break ?

I was listening to Laxmikanth Pyarelal right from Childhood. They were big
shots , and I wanted to contact them somehow. I convinced their watchmen to
leave me inside, and he allowed me to meet them. They claimed that it was good,
but were giving me some tips abt Music Direction, which I couldnt understand
properly. So, I was upset once again. At that time, I heard somewehere in radio
that music of ROJA and Rangeela had released. Then I decided that this is the
right person for me, who can do the experiment and can understand me well. when
I sang the Punjabi Version of Chaiyya Chaiyya in front of the Music Directors
in Mumbai, they were telling that its not a good song, an ordinary song, and is
creating more noise. So, I decided to run away from Mumbai to CHENNAI. It was a
very right decision , and the moment I met ARR, the song was finished in the
next 20 minutes.

Q :- How did you get a chance to meet ARR ?.

There is a musician very close to ARR, whom I met before. I asked him that I
wanted to meet ARR somehow, and he told me Come.

Q :- Your whole life changed after you met ARR ??

Definitely. ARR is a genius. I met the person, who always makes new
experiments.

Q ;- How did you convince ARR ?.

Now also, I feel I am not a succesful singer. Other singers are doing a good
job. I have never tasted succes. I have not seen success. Basically, my motive
was to do an experiement with music. When I met ARR, there was no need to
describe anything. The moment I met ARR, he told me to write lyrics for the
movie . I was shocked. It was fr a waqt for the movie THAKSHAK. ARR told Govind
Nihalani that may be wecan try with Sukhwinder singh if he can write the
lyrics. So it was liked by Govind ( director ) , and he told ARR that
Sukhwinder can write the lyrics. ( MUje Rang De Mujhe Rang de Song )

And then ARR asked if he can write a song dil Se. Sukhwinder jokes saying
that he writes all lyrics from his heart ( Dil Se ) , for which ARR told No..
its for a movie called Dil Se ( Maniratnam Film ) . ARr started narrating the
situation, and SS was saying about Pir Baba Bulleh Shah. The situation that was
explained was suitable for wordings from Pir Baba Bulleh Shah. ARR liked it
very much, and then he asked Whom do you think will sing this ?. SS told
Let me try. and he sang and then everything was history.

first big break with ARR was that .

SS was there in Chennai, till the completion of TAAL. Till that time, SS was
living there, and then returned to Mumbai.

[arr]Regarding copyrights and royalty

2008-01-17 Thread Shama Mehta
Hello everyone,
Lately we've been hearing a lot about the copyright and royalty issues and
Rahman deliberately turning down offers. I was wondering if someone could
please shed some light on these issues as in what are the precise things that A
R Rahman is asking for and why are the movie makers not able to accept those
terms. I mean, there's got to be more than just the basic copyright and royalty
problems. Any idea, anyone?

Happy Birthday, dude! A fresh voice is wishing over the phone. Same to you
dear.. I say in reply!

A text to a friend goes saying... Happy birthday... So whats the news?
Answer comes... Happy birthday... Read in Mumbai Mirror that Jodhaa Akbar is
releasing soon.. Hurray !

Yes, Happy Birthday is echoing here since the morning, and this is the way
we are celebrating it! By wishing ourselves!

The birthday of this man is like a festival to us. And why not, it's so
special! After all, this is the man who has made our lives so special, so
rich.. His art comes directly from his heart. He comes out of his work and
touches our souls. His philosophy of life makes us think and motivates us..

People call him 'inspiration', 'God of music', 'isai puyal' 'Guru', 'Anna',
'The Boss', Lord, idol, Sir, and what not.. But the man is one and the same. He
is everywhere with his music. And now it is not just music, it's becoming a
moment!

On this special day; I take this opportunity to wish him, a very joyous,
healthy, wealthy, successful, spiritual, peaceful, and musically rocking life
ahead.

Happy birthday A. R. Rahman Boss! God bless you…!

[arr] Unseen Footage from Aug.15, 2004

2008-01-05 Thread Shama Mehta
Hello all!
I have finally managed to upload the video of ARR whilst he was in NYC as the
grand marshall during the India Day Parade 2004. I made a special trip to NYC
from Canada. I know its been a long time since then, and I heartily apologize
for the delay.

But I hope you all enjoy the video. And yeah, just kindly bear in mind that the
streets were packed with people (10,000+). I am a short person but I've tried
to get as close as possible and also zoomed in as much as I could. Oh and also,
tried to keep the camera as steady as possible too.

Here are the links in chronological order:

Well, that's it. Enjoy!
