Re: [arr] How can we fans send a message to the media?

2010-09-03 Thread Srini Santhanam
These people better be ignored. The media in this country is a shame. I have
always felt that, this is just another instance where their ugly face is
revealed. They ridicule themselves by calling VTV and Jeans as duds!

AR will probably be not bothered about all the media circus - he will take it
in the same way he has handled all praises - Ella pugazhum / thootralum
iraivanukke.

The same media that questioned sachin's greatness and asked for him to be
dropped, sang his praise for days together when he proved his worth to them
again.

It's not going to take them much time to start singing Rahman's praise again.

Re: [arr] ARR's theme song didn't strike me

2010-08-29 Thread Srini Santhanam
I haven't had the time to listen to the CWG theme yet. Talking of the recent
theme musics, to me (and my parents as well) the Semmozhi song is just amazing.
I was able to connect to it instantly. It gives me a lot of positive energy
every time I listen to it.

Re: [arr] Gotta think thrice before posting nowadays...

2010-08-25 Thread Srini Santhanam
This is my 'long' standing view on 'Rahman reads all the mails in our group'.

I don't think AR reads all mails here - I feel it's nearly impossible for him
given the various roles he plays, the busy schedule he runs and the number of
mails hits we have here.

I guess Gopal / Vijay would share with him the general flavor of the
conversations here as well as media in general and might forward him a couple
of notes that they deem fit.

I also feel that most people who post here share their genuine appreciation
because they like what they hear and not because Rahman or Blaaze are reading
their mails.

This is not a statement of fact, just my gut feel.

But as a song - the one that grew from 'i'm not gonna listen to this ever
again' to 'You beauty!' was Aaromale..

Friends,

Here's the link i found of the lyrics along with the singers in order - not
complete but decent enough.

I was really scared to try and translate this song, but here's my attempt. I
borrowed the lyrics for the most part from the above link but corrected a few
lines. I would really appreciate if the guys here who know the language well to
correct me if you spot any mistakes or have a better translation.

From what little I know, Sachin less tech saavy and equally (if not

he has a official FB and Twitter page but he it's more used as an

It will be fabulous if AR also starts tweeting. I'm sure he will set

Here's his message on Gujarat Day Song:

It gives me immense pleasure to be commissioned by the Govt. of Gujarat to
compose a song for the Gujarat Day celebrations. The song is called 'Jai Jai
Garvi Gujarat' and has been written by noted writer Kavi Narmad. Other Gujarati
writers on this song are Dilip Rawal, Ankit Trivedi, Sairam Dave & Chiragh
Tripathi. The Hindi version has been written by Prasoon Joshi. The people of
Gujarat are some of the nicest that I've come across whether in India or across
the globe. Also, the fact that my wife is from Kutch, gave me additional
impetus to compose this song. I sincerely hope this song helps people celebrate
and come together as one. The film is being directed by my long term associate
Bharatbala who has demonstrated his unique vision and I'm looking forward to
the video.

Hi Yogesh and All,

I wrote that message in a funny way to emphasize the qualities of
ARR and Mani Ratnam in comparison to others and by saying that I
really mean almost all others (of course there will be exceptions
but only a few like Guru Dutt, Bimal Roy, Shyam Benegal, Satyajit
Ray & Naushad). Main reason of course is their originality. These
artists changed the way things were done at their time while keeping
high standards of their art and staying original.

The bitter truth of Indian film industry (or let's say Indian film
history) is that almost everything we did was copied from somewhere
else.

The 2 most shocking examples I can give you are:
1. Sholay movie is copied. Its an amalgam of 6 or 7 great western
movies from Hollywood.
2. Song "Mehbooba Mehbooba" form Sholay (by so called legendary
composer R D Burman) is copied as it is.

[Those who are interested in this stuff, can email me and I'll give
the detailed proof regarding everything said here and countless more
movies and songs that you thought were the greatest ever from India]

For your further information you can go to the following link:
http://bobbytalkscinema.wordpress.com/category/2-cinema-gets-inspired/f-2-cinema-gets-inspired-2/

So why will I not say these people are Donkeys?

I am not writing all this because I have gone crazy, I am writing
because I have seen some of the finest movies ever made in the
history of cinema. This experience has been equivalent to the
heavenly experience we all had listening ARR from Roja to Raavan.

I know the time and space is short here and topic a very big and
away from ARR. But I'll give you a few names of movies (See these
and your soul will be blessed the way ARR's music blesses your soul).

I am giving a few extremely legendary director's names and their few
best movies:
(Be aware that most of the foreign movies are between 1930 to 1960.
That was known as Golden time of movie esp. for Hollywood. These
days the movies made are pathetic and senseless whether its
Hollywood or India)

From India - Mani Ratnam (Nayagan, Bombay, Kannathil muthamittal and
almost every movie he ever made), Satyjit Ray (Pather panchali),
Guru Dutt (Pyasa, Kagaj ke phool), Bimal Roy (Bandini, Do bigha
zameen), Shyam Benegal (Zubeida, Ankur).

From Abroad - Robert Bresson (France: L'argent, Mouchette), Roberto
Rossellini (Italy: Viaggio in Italia, Roma citta aperta), Vittorio
De Sica (Italy: Ladri di biciclette, Umbrto D), Federico Fellini
(Italy: La strada), William Wyler (Roman holiday, Detective story),
John Ford (The grapes of wrath, How green was my valley), Frank
Capra (It happened one night, Mr. Smith goes to Washigton), Howard
Hawks (His girl Friday, Red river), George Cukor (The Philadelphia
story, My fair lady), Alfred Hitchcock (Notorious, The 39 steps),
Michael Curtiz (Casablanca), Fritzs Lang (The big heat), Earnst
Lubitsch (Ninotchka), Preston Sturges (The lady eve, Sullivan's
travels), Richard Brooks (Cat on a hot tin roof).

Those who can die for watching a legendary movie, can contact me.

Re: [arr] 17 years on, Thiruda Thiruda is still the one to beat

2010-04-28 Thread Srini Santhanam
I guess Dinesh was trying to introduce tamil songs to Taimur (assuming he may
not have had the chance to listen to them). Another masterpiece during that
time was 'Kizhakku Cheemaiyile'. It proved to the critics that Rahman is not a
city boy who creates western tunes on a computer (Man, how many people have i
heard that from in the beginning years) but can belt out equally brilliant
village tunes that resonates beyond boundaries. Indira was awesome too - Thoda
Thoda, Nila Kaigiradhu, Odakaran Marimuthu.. Aahh!! Divine.

I still distinctly remember the first time i heard each of these albums and the
time my dad declare after listening to Duet that Rahman is the best musician
India has ever produced.

And yes, Thiruda Thiruda Rocks!!

Cheers,
Srini

this album.. My note was not about Hari expressing his disappointment but the

I'm still keeping hopes alive of Rahman singing in the Tamil version

A glimpse of the trailer in the website gives a preview of the visual

I think everyone liked the haunting background music on the official

hear Behene De, for that same music on the Raavan website is the
backdrop music for that song. I checked multiple times while playing
the 30 second Behene De clip and the music on the Raavan
website..I have no doubtit's the same.matched in both
pitch and tempo. You get to hear the backdrop music without vocals
and strings at the very tail end of the 30 second Behene Clip for a
1-2 seconds.

This song I predict will be a bonified masterpiece.it's also
more than 6 minutes in duration (6 minutes, 10 seconds), so it will
fall nicely into my category of exceptional Rahman songs of more
than 6 minutes in duration. Can't wait!

Also..I noticed possibly raaga Bhairavi or a variation of raaga
Bhairavi in 2 tracks from the clipsin Behene De and in Ranjha
Ranjha. Let's see if my inklings are correct on the 24th...

Again, apart from the Asha song being cut, no Rahman sung number,
and no instrumental number, I am very excited about this album!!!

Re: [arr] Conversation between SPB and ARR

2010-03-27 Thread Srini Santhanam
AR: It takes 6 months to get a call sheet from SPB. We wanted SPB to
sing a song in Sultan but he was busy for 6 months and by the time he
was free I was out of town, so we might have to wait another 6 months
to record that song.

SPB: I'm following AR's ways.. it takes years to get ARs appointments
and I take 6 months.

SPB: You can win a lot of awards and reached the pinnacle but you will
never find a 'good boy' like AR. He is down to earth and that's what i
like the most about him. I've known him for 30 years now and he's
always been simple. When the singers are performing, he is standing
here hands folded as though God gave them a song and they are singing
and he has nothing to do with it.

Suhasini: Let's ask him if he know the meaning of 'Ego, Arrogance' etc

SPB: He would just stand there with no reaction as if he has never
heard these words. [Turning to AR] You keep growing in your profession

Re: [arr] VTV Lyrics, Thamarai and Vairamuthu !!

2010-03-19 Thread Srini Santhanam
I recall Simbu mention during his interview in coffee with Anu that he
prefers the lyrics of the songs to be in a casual language and not in
proper films. His view was that when the characters speak normal Tamil
why should the songs alone have poetic verses.

So I guess Thamarai just delivered what she was asked to do. Film
music is not just about showing off your brilliance in every song but
also giving what the movie and the creative team demands. I too agree
that it's difficult to write lyrics for ARs compositions and Thamarai
has done a decent job in this movie.

On a related topic, I watched the movie with english subtitles and
Hosanna was translated as 'Praise be to Love'.

PS: My response to Simbu's logic would be that if films have to be
natural, you shouldn't be having songs et all :)

Her lyrics might not have been poetically inclined, but as Srinivasa
rightly pointed out, they fitted the film like a T. In fact, I
humbly believe that the lyrics have done more than captured the
essence of the film.

Frankly speaking, the film didn't work wonders for me. But the
characters did. I think Karthik and especially Jesse are the most
complex and at the same time uncomplicated characters ever
introduced in tamil film industry. They believe in what they want
and they're direct and frank with their feelings...yet, they choose
to live in dilemma. This spells out the exact position of many
youths of today. And with characters woven in such a manner, the
lyrics have to be written in the similar way- forthright and candid!
And that's exactly what Thamarai did and that's where she scored.

On the other hand, there can never be another Vairamuthu, as there
can never be another Kannadasan, Vaali, Thamarai, Pa. Vijay etc. I
strongly believe that each and every artist have their capabilities
and limitations and to compare them with another is not only
impractical but preposterous too.

I did not know that Thamarai won the best Lyricist for the song
"Injarungo Injarungo" from Thenali. Interesting news for me. I have
to listen to the song one more time paying special attention to the
lyrics.

Coming back to VTV, maybe the lyrics fits well with the movie, but
poetically speaking the words and the imaginations were pretty
average.

I wish we have more lyricist in Tamil on the caliber of Gulzar or
Javeed Aktar.

What happened to ARR-Vairamuthu' s Sir combination ? I am terribly
missing it. They were a mind blowing pair and I really wish they
come back once again and make me sit back and take a notice of the
lyrics in ARR's songs.

Huh? I don't think anyone here tried to compare Rahman and Sachin.
It's quite the opposite. What they are pointing out is 'similarities'.
They are legends in their own field, they belong to the same era, and
icons on Young India and have brought cheer and pride to the nation.
There are millions of people who are big fans of both these legends
and I don't see anything wrong in this thread.

I agree if you have an issue about people comparing Rahman with other

Let me clarify that i'm not trying to compare AR & MJ or their music -
I would never do that. What I meant in my earlier note is to point out
that they don't have the same celebrity status. 'Jai Ho' the song has
an universal appeal but I don't know if it's the same for Rahman, the
brand.

From a non-Indian public point of view, they all love the song but i
wonder how many might recognise Rahman yet. I have had few experiences
where people have said they love Chaiyya Chaiyya, but they didn't know
it was composed by Rahman.

It's gonna take a few more collaborations and few more Jai Ho's before
Rahman looses the liberty to take those early morning walks in LA
which he can afford now :)

Re: [arr] What makes ARR great ? My perspective

2010-02-02 Thread Srini Santhanam
Great thoughts Ram. If also feel he has this aspect of an
‘Explorer’ - one who is not intimidated by the boundaries set in
geographical, language or musical landscapes.

While he could have settled for being a successful musician in Tamil
Nadu churning out more Tamil albums every year, he set out of the
shores and ventured into the Hindi film industry. Just when we thought
he has reached the pinnacle of what every Indian musician can aspire
to be (by ruling the regional and national music industry), he
explored new landscapes in Broadway, China and into Hollywood! He is
not just content in continuing to do what works.

Even in the musical landscape, he has refused to be confined to the
patterns / song structure defined but explored new ways and challenged
us in the process to expand our scope of acceptance. It takes a couple

Friends,

Spurred on by this article, I have put down some of my thoughts on
why I think ARR is the great man and musician that he is. This is a
thought process which has developed over the last 18 years that I
have been listening to his music and following him in the media. A
few disclaimers upfront, I have no music background and unlike some
people in this group have not met ARR or worked with him etc. So my
perspective is purely from the outside.

1) Natural ability: He is a musical genius and this is the first
ingredient. This is a god-given gift and there is no other
explanation for the same.

2) Intelligence and Emotional intelligence: ARR is a very
intelligent man, he comes across as someone very thoughtful and
measured. This is then accentuated by his emotional intelligence.
Why is this critical ? - ARR composes music primarily for movies,
this means his music sense has to combine with a Director's vision
of the movie and the two must match. Only then will the music truly
capture the essence and emotion of the movie. Even the great Ennio
Morricone talks about this as the bedrock of his success. ARR'
ability to feel the emotion and convert it to music is exceptional,
whatever be the emotion - love, compassion, anger, happiness, etc.

3) Ability and Passion to be world-class: This again comes from his
natural intelligence. He Ping (director of warriors of heaven and
earth) described ARR's music to this effect - "ARR blends western
instruments/music with eastern (indian) melody and creates a sound
that is unique only to him". To do this in itself is being a world-
class thought leader in music. But even more unique is to do it in
the early 90s meant ARR was being world-class even before the world
knew what it meant. He was defining a new sense of "great" in music
no past definition of greatness. This is belief in one's self.

4) Constant urge and Passion for learning and innovation: ARR never
rests with what he knows. He constantly seems to want to do more and
better. Infact from the interviews, what I could glean was that
Danny Boyle approached him only for a background score on Slumdog
millionaire. ARR convinced him to listen to some of the songs for
the movie. Danny again tells him "no cellos". Which meant he did not
want any emotional or melodious songs. Now ARR's strength is this
kind of music. But he takes it on as a challenge and gives Danny the
edgy/rough kind of score that he wanted at the same time retaining
the ARR essence. And then he wins all these awards. Even ARR will
say, he did not foresee all this, but his unique ability to push the
edge of his ability and comfort zone has brought this glory. Same
thing with RDB - the song lukka chuppi was purely ARR's idea and he
naughtily admits that he did it to fulfill a long dream to sing with
Lataji. But when the music was done and the movie is watched, that
song captures the essence of the movie in a way that is very unique.
It is very rare to see anyone push the possibilities so consistently
and so well. Numerous such examples be found on this topic.

5) Childlike enthusiasm: Hear ARR speak and you can always see a
child somewhere. He wants to learn, he wants to do new stuff, he is
never content with his achievements. no arrogance for what he has
done. Imagine he goes and learns a new instrument like the continuum
and then produces amazing music with it. That innocence and constant
energy will always give him ideas and open newer frontiers. It is
also the same with technology. ARR till date and since he started
has always adopted and mastered new technology. That is a sign of
learning and growing rather than stagnating.

6) Ability to o

Hey Friends,

What an incredible concert! I hope everyone enjoyed it. For those
who couldn't catch it, i have recorded the entire concert and will
try to post in online. Any recommendation on where videos can be
uploaded other than Youtube? The concert is more than 2 hours and
youtube only lets you load 10 minute videos.

AR sang a lot of songs.. strangely, he didnt remember the lyrics
for almost all the tamil songs he sang :( The overall presentation
of the concert was great! I wish i had been there. Glad atleast i
could watch it online.

2009-10-14 Thread Srini Santhanam
My friend called me yesterday and said the sound quality was really
horrible and with a Rs. 1000 ticket, she could hardly hear anything..
Khawaja was almost impossible to hear.. she was almost in tears!

I can imagine how frustrating it could have been. Someone needs to
take this seriously. its not fair on the fans and does not do any
justice to Rahman's music as well.

"BAD" sound. was reported in the Kozhikode concert too and
during Pune concert half of "Genda Phool" song was heard by us on
stage but not by audienceI thought atleast Chennai would be
spared of this new virus.

Having seen myself in Pune concert, the state-of-the art and High-
tech sound system and battalion of assistants and the complicated
mixing and feedback consoles being operated by top-notch sound
engineers and the entire event managed by a professional "no-
nonsense" event management company, it is odd to get these reports
of BAD sound system.

Aren't they worried about it ? Isn't anybody doing anything about it ?

I do hope, the Sound Team will finally resolve their glitches and we
will see a flawless sound system in Hyderabad and remaining JAI HO

Rahman's sound is afterall "RAHMAN SOUND", and For that atleast I
want to go to Hyderabad.

Hello there, im glad to find u love the Tamil version more. I
actually feel Uyire is always a better album than Dil Se. I heard
that Poongatrile (Eh Ajnabi) was composed in Tamil first. I think
even the Sandhosha Kaneere was composed in Tamil fist. Not sure on
the latter, but former was confirmed by Gulzar .(He was too
asthonished by Vairamuthu's lyrics and he was having a doubt if he
could even match with the lyrics of Vairamuthu in that song).

Nenjinile had a better ending than its Hindi version (Lata
Mangeshkar was said to just keep on going with her rendition in her
own style and ARR ended it with his touch). But the Tamil version,
where S.Janaki sang, it had a more complete and fulfilling ending
thanks to Janaki ma's awesome way of ending the song. Do give it a
try. U will love it more.

like Roja, Taal or *insert your favorite album here* etc. etc.

But the most interesting disappointment mails were little bit
different.. here is a list of my favorite disappointment mails.

If anyone gets offended, get offended.. that is exactly the purpose
of this mail. Because, we are sick of seeing these people popping up
whenever a new album is going to release.

1 . AR Rahman does not mention more Tamil Movie names as his
favorite albums - Fans Get Disappointed

2. Someone posts a preview of a song into youtube and the first
mail will be - Disappointed!!

3. AR Rahman is concentrating more on hindi projects - Disappointed

4. Intro of a song sounds a bit similar to another song he / she
heard of another composer - Huge disappointment!

5. AR Rahman is not doing this movie or that movie - Disappointed.

6. AR Rahman chooses a singer over another who he / she thinks
would have been a better choice - because he / she thinks that his /
her knowledge in music is far superior than the others.. even
rahman. - well, they get disappointed!

7. When a singer cannot pronounce a particular word correctly -
Disappointed

8. The rhythm of a song sounds familiar to that of a song he
composed in another language, or another year - How could rahman do
this to us!! we are disappointed.

10. When someone tells these disappointed fans to take it easy,
they are easily offended and get - disappointed!

Re: [arr] some questions about ARR's Tamil songs

2009-05-17 Thread Srini Santhanam
I will answer the 3rd question because its such a lovely song which is
close to my heart for the music, the lyrics and rendition by MSV. The
song is about the Srilankan tamils leaving their hometown (Mangulam
town in the movie) because of Army raid and it explains the plight of
their journey amid the bomb shelling and air raids.

Here's my attempt on the translation:

Give us farewell, our land
The homes where the ocean beats down to the doorstep
Palm tree forests, birds nest.
Will we ever get to see you again?
We buried the smiles in our lips
We buried our lives within our bodies
We embark on a journey just as skeletons.

Even if its in tatters, will there be a comfort like a mother(land)'s
lap.

Even if you went to heaven, will you get the freedom of your home town.
Here's the nation where we opened our eyes.
Where will be the place when we close our eyes.
We part with you.. Rivers.. we will return if we survive..
We will return is our motherland calls us back.
Oh land that was born behind a curtain of tears.
We see you one last time

We lost our music to the cries of the infants.
We buried our land when the sun went down
At dusk we were on the flowers
At night we were torn by the thorns
Ocean waters, birds - we will meet you if we are alive
Sky and Mountains - we will meet you if we are alive
We are going away with little burdens in the head and more in the
heart..

___

Personally my favorite in the movie would be Vellai Pookal which prays
for Peace in Srilanka and all over the world.. Let the song come true
very soon.

What a marvel by Rahman and the guitars.. awesome

i have recently started listening ARR's Tamil albums (I don't

have a few questions about some songs, would be grateful if someone
could answer. i know this all would have been discussed here when
the albums released but i missed since i used to skip messages about
Tamil albums.

1. Thigu Thigu (Ah Aah)
the song starts with music piece in background (first 42 seconds)
and then suddenly bursts into full song. my question is about this
music piece. is this part of the original song (i.e., composed by
ARR?) or it is some old song integrated here. the old style
instrument (don't know what it is called) used made me believe it is
some old song. also the instrument is played so beautifully
especially those 5 seconds between 0:15 to 0:20. that i wonder why
ARR did not use it in the rest of the song.

2. Karisal Tharisil (Tajmahal)
first times when i listened this song i did not notice that it is a
single song. there are a number of different melodies or songs
merged into one song. is this a medley song?

3. Vidai Kodu (Kannathil Muthamittal)
oh man, what a stunning song. what a composition, this song alone
deserves a bunch of oscars. only ARR can do such a composition. i am
totally blown away. for me this is the BEST song of all his Tamil
discography. now only one question, please someone tell me what is
this song about (the theme of song). if someone could come up with
translation that would be really great.

4. Ada Mondru Ezhuthu (Paarthale Paravasam)
the first time i listened this song i was like oh this cannot be by
ARR. the song is great and my favorite too, the thing which made me
think so was the sitar (or guitar or whatever) the instrument the
song starts with (00:13-0:30 and then 0:42-0:53). similar pieces i
have heard in lot of songs from B-grade composers in Bollywood. very
rarely i heard similar piece/instrument in ARR's songs. though the
way the same instrument is played in first interlude (1:36-2:09)
made me think only ARR can make it played so beautifully. anyways
just for clarification question is, is this song an original by ARR
or some recreated or remix song (e.g. like i just learned about
Ponmagal Vandaal from ATM)

this is all for now. i may come with more as i am still not done
with some albums.

Hi group,
It's my pleasure to say that I've reached the final few in Airtel
Super Singer 2008, on vijay tv. And most of the songs I've sung in
this competition have been ARR sir's songs. To the extent that
everyone acknowledges it on the show as well, that I'm a die hard
Rahmaniac :D

I have dedicated my perfomances in the wild card round to ARR sir
and all his fans, and all three songs that i've sung in this round
are boss's :)

Of course, only one finalist will be selected from the current 5
contestants, and this would be based on audience votes. Do watch the
show, and if you like my performance, I request you all to support
me by voting for me. Even if I do not go on to become a finalist,
the music shall continue always :)

To vote, sms "SS18" to 57827
or logon to http://vijay.indya.com/supersinger08/vote/contest_vote.asp
Multiple votes for the same contestant are allowed.

Do watch today's episode at 9 PM IST or if you miss it, tomorrow at
1 PM.

I'll post my experiences on the show, and the amount of influence
sir's music has had on me, after i'm done with the show. Been ages
since I posted to the group...

Cheers!!
Long live ARR!!

[arr] Scoring “Slumdog Millionaire” with Logic: A n Interview with A. R. Rahman

2009-03-20 Thread Srini Santhanam
AR Rahman - on Apple Hot News. My Favourite company talking about my
Favourite composer :)

http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/action/arrahman/?sr=hotnews

Cheers,
Srini

Bio

An artist who has redefined contemporary Indian music, A.R. Rahman is
an icon in the world of cinematic scoring and one of the world’s top
25 all-time selling recording artists.

Rahman’s score for “Slumdog Millionaire,” which was critically
praised by Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, and
The New York Times has sold more than 100,000 copies and was the #1
downloaded album on iTunes.

Widely considered the man who single-handedly revived public interest
in Indian film music in the 1990s, Rahman scored the runaway hit,
“Roja,” directed by noted Indian filmmaker Mani Ratnam. The
soundtrack earned Rahman the Indian National Award for Best Music
Composer, and was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 best movie
soundtracks in the world.

Rahman obtained a degree in western classical music from the Trinity
College of Music, London, and set up his own in-house studio called
Panchathan Record-Inn at Chennai, arguably one of Asia’s most
sophisticated and high-tech studios.

Making Tracks

The Soundtrack

To create the “Slumdog Millionaire,” Rahman used a rich palette of
logic plug-ins on the live instruments and software instrument tracks,
including classic Logic plug-ins like the Autofilter, Overdrive,
Compressor, Fuzz Wah, Enveloper, Stereo Delay, Phaser, Ring Shifter
and Bit Crusher, as well as the newer flagship Space Designer and
Delay Designer to help create the overall sound. Several of the tracks
are very simply mixed in Logic Pro with the Logic Adlimiter and
Channel EQ on the main outputs.

“Jai Ho”

In “Jai Ho,” his Oscar-winning song from “Slumdog,” Rahman made
extensive use of Logic instruments, including EXS24, the EVP88
electric piano, and ES2 synth mixed with a few favorite Logic plug-ins
such as Channel EQ, Bitcrusher, and Guitar Amp Pro. The bassline as
well as the trancey, arpeggiated musical line used ES2 presets.

On the long chorus vocals in “Jai Ho,” Rahman created the robotic,
stair-stepping pitch-bend effect with Logic’s Pitch Correction plug-
in to achieve the exaggerated tuning effect.

School’s In

Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory, which teaches students Western
Classical and Indian Classical Music, as well as Audio Media
Education, is India's first Apple Authorized Training Center to offer
all the students Logic Pro Level 1 Certification classes. The students
at KM Music Conservatory use MacBook or MacBook Pro computers running
Logic Pro.

If you haven’t yet heard at least some of the score from this
year’s Oscar-winning best film “Slumdog Millionaire,” you must be
trying very hard not to.

Even before it won two Oscars for best score and best song (“Jai Ho),
as well as the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards for best score, A. R.
Rahman’s soundtrack—written on a Mac in Logic Studio—had
registered with any reasonably alert listener during the film’s much-
reported rise from Indian-flavored indie longshot to runaway worldwide
hit.

If the soundtrack’s audio reach is in part attributable to the
film’s sweeping success, its musical grasp is strictly the result of
Rahman’s unforgettable melodies and rhythms. In fact, It would be as
hard to imagine “Slumdog” without its script or cinematography as
without Rahman’s score.

One of the world’s most prolific and celebrated cinematic composers
and top-selling recording artists, Rahman has scored more than 110
films, starting with Roja (1993), which was named by Time magazine as
one of the 100 best movie soundtracks. He is an equally avid student
of cutting edge music and technology, and he uses both to turn out
scores and songs that seamlessly combine classical Indian and Western
sounds with modern vocal and instrumental styles.

For “Slumdog Millionaire,” Rahman blends Bollywood, hip-hop, world
music and more to not only complement but significantly carry the
film’s energetic plot and audience-pleasing themes. In a recent phone
interview, Rahman spoke about how he used Logic and other tools to
create his eclectic, ambitious score against unforgiving deadlines.

How did you come to work with director Danny Boyle on “Slumdog
Millionaire”?

Well, I was really busy last year. I was doing about eight films, too
many really. And I had this email saying “Hey I’m Danny Boyle, I
like your work, and it would be great for us to have you on our
film.” I didn’t know what to answer. But after exchanging several
more emails, I met him personally in Mumbai. And when I talked to him,
I had some interest and I wanted to see the film. He had a first cut
of the film already, and when I saw that I was really interested and
wanted to do it. So I left another film to

I need to express my feelings about this song from Sangamam, which
really impresses both intellectually and emotionally. The way
Shankar M has sung this song is absolutely divine. The infectious
dholak rhythm with the Mast Qalandar like melody (not at all copied)
makes this song my very favorite from Sangamam.

I love it when the second interlude adds this incredibly infectious
ghungru rhythm, very similar in pattern to the Taal Se Taal mila,
Hai Na, Chale Chalo Mitwa ghungru tracks, taken away, then back
again for the final portion of the song. Just pure magic.

I truly with Shankar M would sing for ARR again.

Heard that ARR said that Mani's next would be kind of similar to the
style of Sangamam (folk, semi classical), so we can really look
forward to that.

Am curious to know what everyone's favorite song from Sangamam is.
