Swagatham fiasco: Rahman's top 10 duds
ibnlive.com
Posted on Sep 03, 2010 at 11:24 | Updated Sep 03, 2010 at 11:52

The verdict is in. 'Swagatham', A R Rahman’s anthem for the Commonwealth Games,
has received anything but rapturous welcome.
People who have heard it are cool, downloads are flat, music professionals are
looking away – even politicians are denouncing the song.
The slow-paced number, sung by Rahman himself, has got everyone wondering
whether this is what the Games deserves.

PollWhy does the CWG anthem Swagatham not work for you?

 Slow-paced
 Lacks punch
 Style of Rahman is missing

While everyone may wonder what went wrong, it’s worth remembering that Rahman,
for all his apparent Midas touch with melody, has had his share of duds.
Unfortunately, the tune that the nation was looking forward to has turned out
to
be one of them.
Some of the songs Rahman composed in his early years for Malayalam and Telugu
films have remained unpopular.
Fans who have grown used to the trademark Rahman style over the years have also
complained the composer is repeating himself.
Towering expectations of the man dubbed “Mozart of Madras” of repeating the
legendary success of ‘Roja’ in every film may have also led to a slump in
quality in some soundtracks.
“I’ve heard better from Rahman,” was the common sentiment on the streets when
“Jai Ho” received international acclaim.
Here, then, are Rahman’s top 10 dud soundtracks from a musical career spanning
almost 20 years – songs that have either bombed at the charts or simply faded
from memory for lack of fizz:
1. 'Swagatham': A nation, eagerly awaiting its own ‘Waka Waka’ from its trusted
composer, is bitterly disappointed at the outcome of the Commonwealth
Games anthem. Critics call it a “cacophony” while fans find the punch missing.
2. 'Raavan': The music of Raavan is dark and appeals to specific audiences.
One
of the most anticipated films of 2010, Rahman brings in contemporary techno and
marries it off to Punjabi folk creating tracks like ‘Thok de killi’ that lack
the hummability of ‘Behne de’ or its staying power.
3. 'Fire': Rahman composed the background score for Deepa Mehta's Fire. It had
the appeal of any Rahman classic but failed to leave a mark in India as the
soundtrack was available only through mail order from a German company.
4. 'Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya': Rahman’s Tamil album comes after a hiatus of two
years and disappointed fans say the songs lack character.
5. 'Parasuram': Rahman tries to experiment with lyrics in ‘Jack and Jill’ and
the effect is disastrous. Fans trash the music of this 2003 starrer and ‘Dolna
Dolna’ is the only song that leaves a mark in an album that has songs sung by
Hariharan.
6. 'Jeans': After a decade, ‘Ajooba’ sang by Hariharan is the only Jeans
soundtrack that sticks with audiences. Beautiful lyrics by Javed Akhtar and
Hariharan’s lilting vocals failed to move traditional Rahman fans looking for
more than just instrumental fusions and contemporary background score.
7. 'Mr. Romeo': This Prabhu Deva starrer had songs such as “Mona Lisa” composed
by Rahman that faded with the film.
8. 'Yodha': An off beat Malyalam film that had Buddhist music in it, shifting
away from the usual Rahman style.
9. 'Lovebirds': ‘No Problem’ – perhaps the only song that has outstayed the
film’s shelf life – is part of a collection put together by Rahman that is
mostly forgettable.
10. 'Kadhal Desam': Rahman sang some of the tracks of the 1996 Tabbu starrer.
While Mustafa Mustafa went on to become a hit with several versions being
replicated on the internet by budding artists, numbers such as 'Hello Doctor'
never caught on.

[arr] Food for thought from ARR Sir: Lets Start September with SOME Positiveness. :-)

2010-09-01 Thread manisha madhavan
Just thought would post 5 interesting quotes by Rahman Sir that have caught my
attention. I know there is an ocean of others, but felt these were the most
relevant at the moment. :) Feel free to add your different 5.

1. "There is a story of Michelangelo -- if I am not wrong -- which I heard
recently. It seems that he was painting beautiful pictures at the back of the
church.
People told him you are a fool because you are not painting in the front where
people can appreciate your work.
The answer was: I do my work for God. I think he can watch it anywhere.
I thought it was a brilliant answer because everything doesn't need to have
instant appreciation. Even if one of you have appreciated those fine nuances,
that is enough for me."

2. "No one can be completely original, because the notes are already there. I
do
a lot of fusion from different traditions including Bach, Beethoven, Mozart,
reggae, rock and Carnatic music — my favourites. As far as possible, i try to
be
original. The rest is up to Allah.”

3. "We have to push ourselves in any field, whether we like it or not. It is
just the question of your mindset. We need to adjust and look into our own
selves. The moment you have this attitude that whatever you do is the best, you
will cease to grow or for that matter experiment, which is very necessary for
creation. I mainly work by instinct.”

4. ”Any great love song, when attributed to a divine source, gets an extra
dimension People say any love that is immortal is divine love… The inspiration,
therefore, is a divine one..”

5. "I also believe in karma. When you do good and think good, there're bound to
be good things happening in your life too. The good wishes you earn in this
lifetime are the real awards. Good work may or may not get you the awards,
but you will always reap the benefits of good wishes, that's the real Reward!"

Have a great month all :)

2010-05-29 Thread manisha madhavan
Did anyone else also notice that there is an extra verse in Thok De Killi which
is not present in Kodu Poatta? At about 3:43 or so...in TDK there is another
verse added but in KP it goes right to the chorus...

nevertheless i think the idea was to listen to each soundtrack as whole
completely and not play each version of each track back to back...where we are
then able to notice these differences...

raavan and raavanan will certainly have 2 different masters. Specific to this,
there are some obvious arrangement level differences, then there is every
reason to believe they are mastered with different tastes. Quitly likely.

I am talking of Same song released in X and showed up a compilation CD from Y
and sounding different!

The difference wont be due to tseries and sony releases. Remember guru tamil
and hindi releases. Both are released by sony bmg. But the two sounded
differently. Hindi release was much better. Thats why i think this difference
in raavan versions occured during mastering. Not damn sure

Loving how ARR Sir used this instrument so subtly in both Raavan and VTV. The
Erhu is this two-string chinese instrument, played like a violin. I have loved
the sound right from when I heard it in Golden Era (Warriors of Heaven and
Earth) ...and just 3 months ago I got a Erhu concerto CD and have been addicted
to the sound of that instrument. So I was so ecstatic when I heard it used in
the BGM of Female Aaromale during the scene right before Manipaaya starts. And
again was extremely happy to hear it being used in Killi Re from 3:11-3:21.

Its just so subtle yet beautiful...only ARR the wizard is brilliant enough to
add these pinch of exotic instruments to create magic with each tune.
If anybody knows other pieces in which this instrument has been used, do let me
know! And i hope ARR Sir continues using it even more in the future :-)

Yeh Jo Desh Hai Tera
Vellai Pookal
Vande Mataram
Dil Se Re
Khwaja Mere Khwaja
Rehna Tu

Ok.. now, rank em!

Here's mine (only for today...subject to change in time)

1) Rehna Tu
2) Dil Se Re
3) Vande Mataram
4) Khwaja Mere Khwaja
5) Vellai Pookal

VTV is a very special album for me too, despite me not knowing a word of Tamil.
There is something quite spiritual about this album that I can't really
describe further. There's a very nice range of music and the sound quality is
crisp and top notch. The orchestration is beautiful and even the faster, techno
numbers are intelligently created with exceptional rhythm and crafty
arrangements.

Man oh man...VTV, D6, CR, Blue, Jaane Tu, Yuvvraaj, Ada, Jodha Akbar.it
simply doesn't get any better.

Totally agree. One word to sum up all the bollywood over-dramatic
gimmicks...Karan Johar...I know these shows have pretty good intentions behind
it and its good to see that they are doing a bit to help humanity, but still
think it highly monopolized and still think their main intention is to
entertain audience. And 'real' TV, especially reality shows is always filtered
content so one can never know what actually goes on 'behind the scenes' in the
'real' world when watching these things.

Nevertheless it was great to hear ARR Sir playing the Rehna Tu intro at the
start of the show. And also this is the first time Sir has appeared in a full
hour talk show! It was great to watch his reactions to the videos that were
played, also his answers and humble remarks throughout the show. :-)

Thanks for the links (and to the person who uploaded them). This is the first
time I saw what the show was about. While I do appreciate the intent behind the
show and how it gives a sizable donation to one family for their betterment, a
lot of the gimmicks in the show left me with mixed feelings.

When the lady was talking about her hardship it felt very manipulative to have
music in the background. It's not cinema. It's someone's life. To use music and
overscore it, is an insult to that person since it's trying to evoke feelings
of pity. That she has managed thus far despite the hardships is a testament to
her resilience and courage. What she needs is sympathy and support. Not the
cinematic equivalent of "look at her sad plight. Now cue in the sad strings and
flute. Feel sorry for her". You don't have to be patronizing when want to be
charitable. And I haven't even started about the rest of the gimmicks. Enough
said.

For all the noble intentions, they had just 3 minutes about the lady and the
rest of it was all fluff. It primarily seems like a mix of a talk show and a
reality show that earns brownie points masquerading as a sincere effort at
charity.

Santosh Pandey,
You seem like an awesome guy. Like ARR said, you didn't lose. Everyone's

[arr] Jai Ho by cappella group called Sterotypes performed at Michigan theatre -- Pretty cool

2010-03-23 Thread manisha madhavan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqtqpmN3F_M

And also to note that they took home first place in this International
Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA)
One of the judges for this semifinal was Kristina Wood, whose bio noted that
she had worked with A.R. Rahman on a music for a number of films,
includingSlumdog Millionaire. Oh the irony, that that’s exactly where The
Stereotypes were headed with their closer, “Jai Ho.” Forgive my language, but
this is probably the single ballsiest song choice I’ve ever seen an
accomplished group make in a competition set. The solo was solid, and the
choreography was, by far, the most fun of the night. The guys used a positively
sick stomp and clap routine for percussion at one point. This is a textbook
example of how you close a set—saving your most powerful, barn-burning number
for the end; picking a song that very few a cappella groups in the world are
doing; executing the heck out of it. I simply can’t say enough good things
about this song, easily my favorite set closer I’ve seen so far in 2010.

[arr] Voicing thier support: good article on contribuitions by artists towards ending poverty

2010-03-15 Thread manisha madhavan
Voicing their support

THERE are some people in the music industry who will go all out to fight
poverty and hunger. Some singers donate cash, others lend their voices towards
charitable causes while a few take time off from their hectic schedules to
visit the underprivileged.
Humanitarian: In this 2003 file picture, Irish rock star Bob Geldof is looking
upon a malnourished two-year-old boy living with AIDS in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Geldof, 58, has been raising funds for famine relief in Africa for over 25
years.

Feed the world
Punk rocker-turned-political activist and philanthropist Bob Geldof, 58, has
been raising funds for famine relief in Africa for over 25 years by
co-founding Band Aid in 1984; Live Aid in 1985 and Band Aid II in 1989, Band
Aid 20 in 2004. He worked closely with then-British prime minister Tony Blair
and helped organise the Commission for Africa to study problems faced by the
country. In 2005, he organised Live 8 to increase awareness of world poverty
and urge world leaders to create solutions for helping the poorest countries.

Charity hero
Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan, 55, is a Unicef and Unaids Goodwill
Ambassador. He is founder of Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation, which helps
young people in a variety of worthy causes, including the provision of medical
services and aid to victims of natural disasters and Dragon’s Heart
Foundation, which strives to meet the needs of poverty-stricken children and
the elderly in the hardest-to-reach areas of China. Magnanimous Chan also
helped to rebuild a village after the devastating tsunami hit Banda Acheh in
2004. Although its official name is Friendship Village of Indonesia-China, most
people there refer to it as the “Jackie Chan village”.

Sustainble living
In 1997, singer Jewel established Project Clean Water, a foundation to provide
clean water on a global scale. Jewel co-launched Higher Ground For Humanity to
improve education and promote sustainable development in South America,
Central America, India, and Africa. Jewel, 35, is a spokesperson for Mary Kay
Ash Charitable Foundation, which works to eradicate cancers affecting women.

Music therapy
Grammy winner composer A.R. Rahman was appointed the global ambassador for the
anti-tuberculosis drive Stop TB Partnership, by the World Health Organisation
in 2004. In 2006, he composed the music for the short film The Banyan, in aid
of destitute women in Chennai, India. He has shown support for charities
including India’s Save The Children and worked with Cat Stevens for his song
Indian Ocean, with proceeds going to orphans in tsunami-hit Banda Aceh. In 2008,
he opened the KM Music Conservatory college in Chennai to train aspiring
musicians in vocals, instruments, music technology and sound design.

Legendary John
After reading American economist Jeffrey Sachs’ The End of Poverty, Grammy
award-winning singer John Legend, 31, was inspired to lend his support to the
disadvantaged. Legend travelled to Ghana, Africa and launched the Show
Mecampaign which provides mosquito nets, free meals to children attending
school, safe water points, local clinics and fertiliser. Legend also raises
awareness and support for GQ magazine’s charity drive, The Gentlemen’s Fund. –

[arr] Avatar singer Lisbeth Scott share few words about AR Rahman in Interview

2010-03-15 Thread manisha madhavan
Avatar singer lends voice to Lahore
IBNS  | Monday, 15 March , 2010, 12:36

Singer Lisbeth Scott – who has lent her voice to several blockbuster Hollywood
films likeAvatar, King Kong, Chronicles of Narnia and Shrek - has sung the
opening alaap in the Warner Brothers-Sai Om Films' forthcoming film Lahore. She
talks about the experience, the film and why, when it comes to Bollywood,
Lagaan remains her favourite movie. Excerpts:

What made you decide to sing for a Hindi movie?
The composer, Wayne Sharpe, liked my work in several films he had seen, and he
contacted me about singing on his score for Lahore. When I heard about the film
and its compelling subject matter, I knew I would love to sing in it.

How was the experience?
It was a wonderful and intense experience working with Wayne on his beautiful
score for Lahore. It was cold in New York when I arrived and I was working on
another project in the city during my visit as well. We had all been working
long hours and were a bit bleary eyed.
When Wayne and I first got together, he decided to start by giving me an idea
of the film and showed me the first fight scene. I was mesmerised and realised
what an important and special film this was. We worked steadily after that for
several days and had a very easy and organic creative interaction. I am very
excited to see and hear the final results!

Did you have to sing any Indian melody or raga?
I have sung in Hindi before and I have used Indian-based styles for the film
and not the raga.

Is what you have sung quite similar to what you have done in Hollywood
projects- since it is part of the background score.
It is quite interesting and it is not exactly the background score because
sometimes there is voice, too. But yes, it’s not a song situation for the cast.
It’s the opening soundtrack of the film.

If given a chance to work with an Indian singer, whom would you prefer?
Personally, I would choose AR Rahman who did the score for Slumdog Millionaire.
I love Indian sound and I have always been drawn to classical music.

When you were singing for Lahore, was there something new you did which you
haven’t done before in Hollywood projects?
The nice thing about Wayne Sharpe’s score is that he manages to blend the
styles and sounds differently and he also has sense of world music. I used my
voice differently as there was an Indian flavour to it and the wonderful part
of this movie is that it has a universal message about cultural borders and
healing conflicts.

Did you find any similarities between your singing in Avatar and Lahore?
Yes there were similarities in the approaches. There were several scenes in
Avatar which I watched and listened to the music, which was written by the
composer, and created certain melodies. I did something similar with Wayne
Sharpe, too. He allowed me to create my own melody and give my response.

Have you watched any Indian films to understand the genre of music?
My favourite movie is Lagaan. That was the first Hindi movie I saw. For me,
musically, it was a dream come true. The music that was played was fantastic
and an eye opening experience. The film had intense passion that made me love
Bollywood movies.

What attracted you to Indian music?
The first time I got interested in the Indian music was when I was a child.
When I was 12 year old, I had a jazz music teacher and he was an Indian. One
day he played Pt. Ravi Shankar’s signature music and I remember I was so
fascinated and speechless as the music was fantastic. After that I had this
immense love for Indian music.

As you are big fan of AR Rahman? What do you like about his music?
When I heard his music in Slumdog Millionaire, I was completely blown away
[laughs]. One thing that I love about his music is that he sings a song and
creates a melody in such a way that it takes the listener through a harmonious
journey and it opens your heart. He creates a world of his own that is very
powerful thing for an artist and he is a master of that.

What inspires you to work in Hollywood instead of creating your own album?
I have already done lot of work as a solo artist and I do have nine albums of
my own. When I came first to Hollywood, one of my friends heard me singing and
that friend knew a film composer and he asked me to sing for a Hollywood movie.
That is how I entered Hollywood.
I love being a part of musical world. I think that passion for your work makes
you successful and I love whatever I do. I love the intensity of expression,
languages and I just love singing and listening to music. I love to take all
the challenges that I come across.

By Dean Goodman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Star-struck singers, rappers and actors, including
Barbra Streisand, Kanye West and Miley Cyrus, checked their egos at the door on
Monday to record a new version of "We are the World" for Haiti earthquake
victims, 25 years after the song raised awareness of the famine in Africa.
None of the singers of the original song were invited to participate in the
update, which was recorded at the same Hollywood studio once again under the
oversight of Quincy Jones and the song's co-writer Lionel Richie.
In all, more than 70 stars lent their voices to the song, and they all seemed
in awe of each other.
"As celebrities, we're fans of one another, so we're all looky-looing in there,
and getting autographs and numbers," said Natalie Cole.
Streisand, Celine Dion and Tony Bennett appeared to inspire the most stares.
Fifteen-year- old Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber joked that he would ask his
new friend, R&B singer Akon, to get the telephone number of Nicole Scherzinger
of the Pussycat Dolls.
Streisand, a noted perfectionist, ran through multiple takes of the line
originally sung by Diana Ross, each one seemingly better than the previous one.
Jazz singer Patti Austin came into her recording booth to coach her.
Guitar virtuoso Carlos Santana sang along, even though he is not a singer. Two
members of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, appeared to ignore each
other.
'INSPIRED CHAOS'
Classical crossover tenor Josh Groban described the event as "inspired chaos."
"It's great to see so many legendary artists sweating it out. Everybody left
their ego at the door," he said, referring to a request made by Jones at the
original session in 1985.
"To be smack-dab in the middle of a sandwich between Barbra Streisand and Weezy
(rapper Lil Wayne) was personally a creative experience I don't think I'll ever
have the pleasure of having again," Groban added.
For his part, Lil Wayne said his mother asked him to get a photo of Gladys
Knight.
He was among a heavy quotient of hip-hop stars, including Snoop Dogg, Lil
Wayne, Drake, LL Cool J, and will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas as well as West.
"Hip-hop is rock 'n' roll to a lot of people around the world, right now," said
Jones, explaining the absence of the modern-day equivalents of original
performers Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan or Paul Simon.
Lil Wayne, for one, noted that he was not a singer, and thought organizers were
joking when they asked him to sing the line originally sung by Dylan. Asked if
he did a better job, Lil Wayne said, "Hell no!"
Country and Latino artists were notably under-represented. Organizers said they
were turned down for various reasons by some stars. In fact, most of the big
Grammy winners from the night before were absent, including Beyonce and Jay-Z,
who returned to New York, and Taylor Swift, who flew to Australia straight
after the ceremony.
Randy Phillips, one of the organizers, said his "one regret" was the absence of
dance-pop star Lady Gaga.
The song, which was still being worked on into the small hours of Tuesday, will
make its world premiere during NBC's coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympics
on February 12.
Both the song and an accompanying video, shot by Oscar-winning "Crash" director
Paul Haggis, will go on sale both through traditional and online retailers.
Phillips said all proceeds will go to a newly established foundation that will
carefully monitor disbursement.
The January 12 earthquake killed up to 200,000 people in Haiti and devastated
the already impoverished nation.

'Insane' is how AR Rahman has described his twin Grammy win on his Twitter
page. Rahman won best compilation soundtrack for a motion picture at the 52nd
Grammy Awards and 'Jai Ho' won best motion picture song. Rahman shares the
Grammy with lyricist Gulzar who penned 'Jai Ho' for the film Slumdog
Millionaire.

Admitting that he had 'never even dreamt about winning all these awards..',
Rahman has thanked his well wishers for inspiring him to greater success. "And
all my well wishers from the world who keep me going... Jaiho India...!"

Besides his spiritual Sufi teacher Ameen Peerullah Malik Sahib,
the music maestro has also expressed his gratitude to Slumdog
Millionaire director Danny Boyle, the film's creative team and cast. Others who
find mention in his tweets include sound engineer Resul Pookutty (he won the
Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing for the film Slumdog Millionaire), lyricist
Gulzar and 'Jai Ho' singer Sukvinder Singh.

According to Rahman, he owes his success to a number of people, among them some
noted personalities from Bollywood and Hollywood. "My mentors Maniratnam,
Shekhar Kapur and Subhash Ghai, and mentor in the west, Andrew Lloyd
WebberFolks at id-PR, Allison and Courtney," he tweets.
Rahman has not forgotten his family in the excitement of the moment. "y
extraordinary musicians from Chennai and Mumbai, My mother, My father, my
Sisters and my lovely wife and children," he writes on his Twitter page.

Meanwhile Twitter is abuzz with Rahman's latest triumph. "Jai Ho" Rahman for
the Grammy!! One more feather in your cap :)" tweets 'ananthnaag'. According to
'deeptinischal' Rahman "rocks". And 'Shankarnb @arrahman' tweets that Rahman's
win symbolises "the success of aspirations of every Indian".

Celebrities are also using the micro-blogging site to congratulate Rahman.

"And to A.R. Rahman...CONGRATULA TIONS!!love the track from couples retreat..."
(Deepika Padukone, actor)

"AR rahman goes beyond Slumdog and takes over hollywood ! Two grammies. I will
send the best tweet to him personally." (Shekhar Kapur, filmmaker)

"CONGRATS A.R.!!! CONGRATS INDIA!!! Jai h! !!! Ssso proud:-)
@rojajimmy @arrahman JAI HO SIR. Awesome. 2 Grammys." (Mallika Sherawat, actor)

"@arrahman Congratulations! ! That's a fantastic achievement! We wish u many
more!! God bless!" (Lara Dutta, actor)

"What great news to wake up to this morning. Double grammy:) this is just the
beginning sir. So proud of u. hearty congratulations @arrahman." (Shreya
Ghoshal, singer)

"2 Grammys. RAHMAN, congratulations! God is great, and India is truly proud."
(Vishal Dadlani, Music composer)

"What fabulous news this morn tweeps! Rahman wins 2 Grammys!!Yaay! Jai ho! Have
a super day! Can't believe Jan 2010 over. The year is flyin by!" (Sophie
Chaudhary, actor)

"Wake up to hear Man U trash Arsenal and Rahman win a grammy.. Prefect start to
a very busy week ahead." (Mahesh Bhupathi, tennis player)

"@arrahman congrats.. You make us extremely proud time and time again.."
(Mahesh Bhupathi, tennis player)

"bravo rahman!!! two Grammy's!! Jai Ho!!" (Kajol Devgan, actor)

"@arrahman congrats dear once again u made india proud..." (Madhur Bhandarkar,
filmmaker)

"Morning world. And Congrats a r rahman for winning 2 grammies. Jai ho rahman."
(Eesha Koppikhar, actor)

Interestingly, the euphoria doesn't stop Shekhar Kapur from touching upon the
debate that has surrounded Slumdog Millionaire, the film that has brought such
accolade for Rahman's musical genius.

"Was slumdogmillionaire an indian film. And if not, why not?" he tweets.

Jai Ho has won Rahman a number of prestigious international awards including
two Oscars, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), Critics
Choice Award and the Golden Globe.

Anmol Bhave, a Yahoo Group member, Chief of The Wandering Souls "RAHMANIA" and
a disciple of our Guruji has been chosen for NATIONAL AWARD by Government of
India for Best Sound for a film "GANDH" ( in Marathi ) !

This is Anmol's second National Award for Best Sound. He received his first
award for his FTII graduation film "CLOSURE" 3 years back.

Anmol also did Music Direction and Sound for a childrens film in Kannada
"GUBBACHIGALU" and also did sound for another FTII graduation film "THREE OF
US". Incidently BOTH these films received NATIONAL AWARDs for best films in
their category !

Directly or indirectly this is a hattrick of sorts for Anmol !

Anmol owes his success to AR Rahman. Though Anmol is a Mechanical Engineer, the
field of SOUND ENGINEERING attracted him the most after exposed to the unique
sound of ARRahman's music and he has chosen SOUND ENGINEERING as his career now.

Anmol claims that every performance of his show RAHMANIA opens up a new
treasure into Rahman's unique Sound Engineering skills and Anmol admits that on
the scale of ARR, he has a long way to go..

On behalf of the Yahoo group, I congratulate Anmol and wish him even more
success in his future assignments.

I am sure Guruji ARR must be happy with his talented disciple ..

Best regards

[arr] Who needs alcohol when you have Music and ARR...

2010-01-18 Thread manisha madhavan
Just came across this small bit on the Sydney Morning Herald...:)
-MM
Way to go - Claire Hanley McMahons Point
While the A.R. Rahman concert at Parramatta Park on Saturday night was
outstanding in itself, the behaviour of the predominantly Indian crowd was
incredible.
I have never been to a large-scale event and seen so many people enjoying
themselves so much without the help of any alcohol. The bar sales must have
been the lowest for any Sydney Festival event. It was a truly all-ages night,
but to see groups of young men and women having a great night out without the
need to drink was a delight to behold.
Having witnessed the horrors of New Year's Eve drunkenness for so many years, I
think some young people could certainly learn a few lessons from their Indian
peers.

Re: [arr] A focus on the song "Manipaya"

2010-01-13 Thread manisha madhavan
Chord, you are soo right about the unconventional melodic structure of this
song. Which infact draws you to listen to it several times to understand it.
Its almost like looking at an abstract painting or reading an obscure novel,
where only with constant revisitation it registers in your mind and you are
able to understand the true message and value behind it, and each revisitation
you discover something new, which makes you want to come back to it again.

Oh the raw emotion behind this song is just remarkable!!

Subject: [arr] A focus on the song "Manipaya"

I am very pleased to see this song being highly rated here in this group,
coming in at number 2 in terms of favorite songs in my poll of fav VTV songs.

The high ratings are a bit surprising in a way because the song's melodic
structure is very unconventional and drawn out, hard to follow compared to most
film song melodies, and appears to meander without direction, even though it
doesn't (a criticism noted in many reviews). There are also not too many catchy
hooks in the melody, even though the melody itself is quite beautiful... very
much akin to a Western theatrical play song you might hear on stage.

On the other side, the high ratings here in this group are not surprising since
I feel most of us are more open minded about different melodic variations and
song structures than the average person out there; we being passionate Rahman
fans, are perhaps more receptive to such experimentations and give it a chance.

Actually, this song requires a lot of patience and time...it requires you to
slow down your listening pace and be more in the musical moment at any given
time...demanding that you pay closer attention to the direction and tone of the
melody and its accompanying, subtle harmonic structures. As I alluded to in my
review, this song falls more in line with an "artistic" oriented composition
and less in line with an "entertaining" oriented composition with higher values
of aestheticism and abstractness.

But the above mentioned points may not be received by a lot of people, thus
many brushing off the song as being too bland and directionless, lacking spark,
energy, intensity. But, really, the true beauty is in the subtlety, under the
surface, if you're willing, patient, and open enough to experience it. It is
truly a "growing" song that requires multiple exposures to appreciate it.

It definitely took time to grow on me and I'm still discovering more of its
beauty with each listen, uncovering subtle instruments here and there, a chord
progression that I first missed, etc. etc.

I'm so glad and grateful that AR likes to experiment like this...giving us
something new and fresh each time, at the risk of initial resistance and
hesitation due to the time needed to accomodate to such novelty and
originality. That quality to me is a the hallmark of a true genius, one who is
daring enough to push the envelope and defy traditional forms, yet being very
confident in its execution. It's what keeps AR so successful, relevant, and
vibrant as he moves further in his career.

Check out the ending with Shreya's soft voice and AR's delicate piano
touches. .just class, PURE CLASS!!!

A truly special song full of feeling, innocence, sincerity that I will cherish
forever

Reading this piece in itself shows the artistic liberty that you are
describing. Beautifully written iChord, the words you choose in your written
compositions always are so rich in description and emotion. Its always a

Subject: [arr] VTV and the Meaning of Artistic Liberty

Artistic unconventionality may haave a price in terms of difficult common
accessability and initial resistance, but the upside is to value a long term
tradition of artistic liberty, heavily influenced and in some ways born out of
the Rennaissance period of world history.

What is artistic liberty? It's a type of freedom of expression.. of thoughts,
ideas, concepts, emotions unbounded by dogma, static rules, and artificial
boundaries, both within and without the individual expressing such a freedom.
It's a gift of nature, an affirmation of our humanity, and a vehicle of
creative expression that serves to communicate the deepest part of ourselves
and to help interpret our world aesthetically through an unknown, undiscovered
canvas of free ideas and concepts that are "out there", and yet "within us" at
the same time.

Music as an artform is a medium of this expression among a spectral array of
various nonverbal communication forms, yet, to me, embodies a holistic
attribute more than other art forms that helpes to synthesize the senses and
the spirit. The power of focused sound, positively intended vibrations on the
molecular level indeed serve many positive purposes through its recreative
invention and various sonic avatars. It it we, the receivers, interpreters, and
listeners, through the magic of our neural makeup, who are divinely gifted and
bestowed the ability to create, invent, and magnify from this aural sea of
sound consciousness that embodies our very existence from conception to death.

When I listen to a contextually unconventional music album like VTV, the
concept of artistic liberty superimposed on the idea of musical freedom
immediately strikes me as a divine gift, that only very few in this world are
able to communicate so movingly and convincingly. No doubt, Rahman's music has
always been about unbounded freedom from the confines of sound limitation and
conventional rules, aided by a myriad of technological tools. It is to the
fortune of Rahman that he arrived at musical time when his own creative
intentions met technological upswelling at a very important crossroad in a
momentous part of musical history. Yes, it was written, and yes, it was
intended.

I celebrate VTV not only because it pleases me aesthetically and challenges my
intellect, stimulating both left and right hemispheres into a holistic
phenomenon, but also for what it represents; another fulcrum of artistic
liberty and musical freedom from a man, one of the greatest musicians ever,
whose creative intentions are only pure and loving.

The larger picture, the unbridled privilge of being a witness and recepient to
this special expression calls out loud and clear to me and I am listening...
listening. ...listening .

Thanks much appreciated.

She has come a very long way right from the death bed to a state where she is
able to listen to Rahman's music!

By the way: She is hooked to "Khwaja" song ever since her ICU days.

Hi Guys,

This track truly is a masterpiece.

This will be an instant hit among all.

Without any exagerration: My wife recently had a brain hamorraphage and since
then she is under selective memory loss.

This morning I got her to listen to Hosanna and she literally started dancing
to it and made a statement saying that "Is this track by Rahman by any chance?"

This is the power of Rahman's music!

Thanks

[arr] Ten moments that defined India (Flashback 2009)

2009-12-24 Thread manisha madhavan
Source: http://trak.in/news/ten-moments-that-defined-india-flashback-2009/40095/

1 . Satyam Computer Services: The entire edifice of corporate governance in
India was shaken Jan 7 when leading IT entrepreneur B. Ramalinga Raju admitted
to a $1.4 billion fraud over several years in the company he had founded and
nursed into one of the largest software exporters. But the country’s regulatory
system acted swiftly and decisively to stem its ramifications. Result: Satyam
Computer Services has been acquired by the Mahindra group and is well on its
road to recovery and growth.

2. ‘Jai Ho’ at the Oscars: It was India’s day at the Academy Awards on Feb 22
when ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, based on a book by Indian diplomat Vikas Swaroop,
grabbed eight Oscars. These included two Oscars for Best Original Score and
Best Original Song for Indian maestro A.R. Rahman, who also performed at the
event, and for Best Sound Mixing for Rasul Pookutty. Also figuring in the Oscar
list was veteran lyricist Gulzar who shared with Rahman the award for Best
Original Song.

3. People’s car Nano: When Ratan Naval Tata, chairman of the $62 billion Tata
group, handed the keys of a gleaming lunar silver-coloured Nano to its proud
owner on July 17, he kept his promise of delivering a ‘people’s car’ for all of
Rs.100,000 (less than $2,500) at factory gates. In the process, India found a
place on the world automobile map, as the small car had been grabbing
unprecedented global attention, and was even compared with Model T and
Volkswagen Beetle.

4. Manmohan Singh: The soft-spoken Sikh defied pollsters to spearhead a
stunning victory for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and get a second
consecutive term as prime minister, only the second man after Jawaharlal Nehru
to do so. He was sworn in May 22 after a staggered election that dealt
crippling blows to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left parties while
giving the Congress 185 seats in the 545-member Lok Sabha.

5. Maoist siege: From obscurity to notoriety, Lalgarh in West Bengal was flung
to the national centrestage by Maoist guerrillas who laid virtual siege on the
area. It took a massive operation in June to flush out the Maoists. But Lalgarh
was only the tip as Maoists cut a swathe of violence through the country with
landmine blasts, explosions at public buildings and ambushing of police.

6. Moon Mission: India’s mooncraft Chandrayaan-I was aborted Aug 30, but the
‘baby’ had done its job by finding water on the moon, project director of the
country’s maiden lunar mission M. Annadurai said Sep 24. It was a proud moment
for India when two NASA spacecraft confirmed the discovery. Chandrayaan-I
carried five Indian instruments and six from abroad, including M3 and another
from NASA, three from the European Space Agency (ESA), and one from Bulgaria.
7. Sachin Tendulkar: Cricket’s ace bat Sachin Tendulkar hit another high when
he crossed the milestone of 17,000 ODI runs with a masterful 175 against
Australia in Hyderabad Nov 5. Tendulkar crossed the landmark during his 435th
game, continuing his brilliance even 20 years after he stepped on the
international scene way back in 1989.

8. Madhu Koda: From a labourer in an iron ore mine to the highest echelons of
power as chief minister of Jharkhand, Madhu Koda, 38, wrote himself into the
biggest corruption scandal as the centre of a Rs.2,500 crore money laundering
scam. The former chief minister was arrested Nov 30. With him in the mega scam
are several of his ministerial colleagues.

9. ULFA arrests: Bringing a long- term hunt to an end, chairman of outlawed
United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) Arabinda Rajkhowa was arrested Dec 4
along with his deputy commander-in-chief Raju Baruah and several others. The
56-year-old had been in Bangladesh for close to two decades, operating out of
bases in that country to carry out their hit-and-run guerrilla strikes in Assam.

10. Telangana: The year ended on a stormy political note when the central
government announced Dec 9 that it would go ahead with the formation of a
separate state of Telangana. The move saved Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS)
chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao, who was on the 11th day of his hunger strike, and
restored calm in Andhra Pradesh’s Telangana region. But there were violent
protests in the Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, splitting political parties
along regional lines.

Water-ing hole

Shekhar's Paani is ready to roll in Spain

By Subhash K Jha
Posted On Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 02:40:33 AM
Shekhar Kapoor flew into Chennai earlier this month to record his
first song for Paani, officially flagging off his first feature film
undertaking since the sequel to Elizabeth two years ago.

Says Shekhar, “Paani is now completely on. We start shooting in April
2010. We're at a pre-visualisation stage. And I needed Rahman's song
for that. Since it is located in a futuristic city, I've artistes in
Los Angeles, Singapore and India creating my city.”

While the film is set in futuristic Mumbai, Shekhar plans to shoot in
Spain. “I've had a big offer from Spain to shoot the film in their
country. They too are fascinated by the water theme. It's a massive
project. Otherwise it wouldn't interest me.”

The film will star newcomers in the lead. Says Shekhar, “The girl has
to be a 17-year old French-Canadian who lives in the Upper City (the
posh area) of  Mumbai. And the young Indian boy is a desi Leonardo
DiCaprio who's a water revolutionary.”

The film is a forbidden love story. “The girl's father is the global
head of a water company. We need another girl, a smouldering
entertainer like Shakira, who's a big star in the Upper and the Lower
City. Then there's an Oracle called Amma.”

Shekhar will cast the hero from India while the girl will be cast
internationally. He swears he hasn't decided a single member of the
vast cast as yet. “You know I had planned whole schedules of Elizabeth
and I hadn't found the actress to play the lead. And since Elizabeth
wasn't cast, no one else was. The studios were getting frantic with
worry. We tested a hundred actresses. I wasn't the least worried. I
knew I'd find my Elizabeth. I saw two shots of Cate Blanchett in a
film no one had seen and I decided on her. The most difficult actor to
cast was Richard Attenborough. Likewise I'm not worried about Paani.”

The spoken language of Paani would be English. But there will be a
dubbed Hindi version. “Even the characters of the Lower City would be
speaking English. Slumdog Millionaire has proved that language is no
barrier. Even though all the Indians spoke English, the language
didn't come in the way of credible self-expression. I will have a
dubbed Hindi version too.”

Paani will be readied in time for the Venice Film Festival in 2011.

Special Feature
A MUSICALVOYAGE
Photos T Selvakumar
byAriel Howard
They are incredibly talented individuals, but what I find most exciting is the
passion they inspire. They have changed the way that I experience music
MUSIC has always been a part of my life, be it the jazz and zydeco of my native
New Orleans or the bolel blues that permeated my first diplomatic assignment to
Ethiopia. An ardent appreciator of many types of music, my own ability to
create is limited to one year of middle school recording and guitar lessons and
belting out (all the wrong) tunes in the shower. But when you live in India,
you come to believe, and then to know, that anything is possible. So when I
received a request to assist the musicians of A.R. Rahman’s KM Music
Conservatory in preparing for their performance in the U.S. Consulate General’s
tribute to Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi, I seized the opportunity.
When Rahman envisaged KM Music Conservatory, his aim was to “expand the
horizons of musicians in India by creating an awareness of Western music and
music technology, while continuing to respect and strengthen the art of Indian
music.” To help make that vision a reality, he had assembled a gifted faculty,
“engaged nationally and internationally in creative and scholarly endeavors.”
Like me, these artists have travelled from their homes in the United States,
Canada and Europe to embrace the masterpiece that is India. They are Rahman’s
musical diplomats, building bridges between India and the West in ways that no
one else can.
On a warm Chennai evening at the Global Adjustments’ India Immersion Centre,
this U.S. Vice Consul and amateur shower vocalist sat down over coffee and
samosas for a tête-à-tête with KM’s Robert Koolstra, Alison Maggart, Kavita
Baliga, Michael Lindsey, Joshua Pollock and Eilidh Martin.
AH: Mark Twain wrote, “In religion, India is the only millionaire – the One
land that all men desire to see…” As musicians, what attracted you to India?
EM: India was always this exotic, foreign place in my mind. I came here just by
chance. I hadn’t even heard of Rahman! It was a chain of events. I played in
Holland with Robert, who was going to KM, and he told me they needed a cellist.
JP: For me, I visited India in 2005 for the first time. It was the ideal
atmosphere for me, but I never thought I would be able to stay as a Western
musician. I thought that if I moved to India, I might miss out on other
opportunities in the West. One fine day, while living in London, my friend and
I were standing next to a world map, waiting for someone we were supposed to
meet. The person never showed up. My friend was looking for a change, so we
decided to close our eyes and choose a spot on the map. I pointed to Chennai. I
went home, searched online for opportunities and found the press release for KM.
AH: And the rest is history! Michael, you had also travelled to India before
moving here with KM. How did your relationship with India begin?
ML: I first came to India in 2006 to learn tabla. It was my first time leaving
the country and I was a sophomore in college. After the ride home from the
airport I knew that this place was for me. The sights, the sounds, even the
smells, registered to me as something completely foreign, and I immediately
fell in love. As a musician, and specifically a percussionist, India is a place
of never ending challenges. The complex rhythmic cycles, as well as the
numerous challenging percussion instruments I’ve been trying to learn, seemed
like a musical buffet for me. I was thrilled when I got the job at KM and have
realised that India is the place where I belong.
AH: Drawing on your experience, what can Western musicians learn from Indian
music and how can Indian music be strengthened by Western music traditions?
RK: Western music has its basis in harmony whereas Indian music has its basis
in rhythm. In the Western world, the keyboard has developed as a leading
instrument. In India, we see instruments like tabla, etc. In Western music
before 1900, a beat basically is in 2, 3 or 4 while Indian (baroque) music
already uses advanced polyrhythms. So if we give some harmony and take some
rhythm, and the Indians give some rhythm and take some harmony, interesting
things might happen!
ML: This is a tricky question. I don’t think that Indian music should be
‘strengthened’ by Western music traditions. The technique, theory and tradition
of Indian music make it what it is and I feel that it should stay that way.
AH: The KM Music Conservatory considers itself an instrument to “achieve ‘good’
social ends.” How have you sought to impact

prestigious trophy will be a great honour for the country.

The 64-year-old stalwart of Indian classical music has been nominated in the
category of 'Best Traditional World Music Album' for the album 'Ancient Sounds'
along with Iraqi soloist Rahim Alhaj.
Rahman has been nominated in two categories -- 'Best Song written for Motion
Picture, Television or Other visual media' and 'Best Compilation Soundtrack
Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other visual Media' for Slumdog
Millionaire.
"I feel it's a blessing of God and I am very happy for Rahman also. It will a
great honour for India whether Rahman gets it or me," Ustad Amjad Ali Khan told
PTI.
Khan, who is credited for taking the folk sound of Sarod into mainstream
classical music, said he never thought that the album will get such response.
"It's the first duet of Sarod and an Arab Instrument Oud in which I have
composed the songs. We recorded it in America but I never thought people would
like it so much," he said. "Both instruments have an ancient sound and its very
interesting, I really enjoyed doing it," Khan said.
The veteran musician has constantly been bestowed with honours including the
Padma Shri in 1975, the Padma Bhushan in 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
"It took time for the world to realise the greatness of the sound of Sarod. I
want to see it on the same level as instruments like Violin," he said.
Khan's album will compete with 'Double Play', 'Douga Mansa', 'La Guerra No' and
'Drum Music Land' for the Grammys, known as the Oscars of the music industry.
The 52th edition of the Annual Grammy Awards will be held at the Staples Center
in Los Angeles on January 31 next year.

Dear All,

December 1st, 2008 was the sad day , when Mr. H Sridhar, the astounding Sound
Engineer passed away . This year Dec 1st falls on Tuesday. We a group of Fan
members were thinking, as to why not spend a day with an orphanage in Chennai,
sponsor them special lunch.

So, we have tentatively thinking of spending next Sunday in an orphanage in
West Mambalam, Chennai. We shall sponsor special lunch for the kids there and
dedicate the day for Mr. Sridhar.

More details to follow...

Re: [arr] Rahman, Resul Pookutty visit Ajmer dargah

2009-11-21 Thread manisha madhavan
A bit from Shekhar Kapur's blog on this experience :) :
AR Rahman and I at Ajmer Dargah Shariff of Hazrat Khwaja Muinuddin Chisti
I want to thank A R Rahman for taking me to Ajmer to visit The Dargah Sherriff
of Khwaja Muinuddin Chisti. It was my first visit and going with AR Rahman made
the visit even more amazing. It is very difficult and perhaps not right to
write or express the feelings unless one has had time to live with them for a
while.
Rahman and I were working in the music of Paani when on the way back to Mumbai
I found myself sitting next to him on the flight when I had just said bye to
him ! He was going to Ajmer and asked if I would come and of course I went. I
saw that as a sign for the beginings of Paani.
My only regret is that I was not there for the early morning Qwaali.

Accompanied by acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapoor, the award winning duo
offered a 'Chadar' at the shrine.

Rahman
and Pookutty who won the coveted Academy award for their work in the
film 'Slumdog Millionaire' said that there is need to start an
awareness campaign to clean up the religious places in the country,
including those in Ajmer.

They also took part in the
'Dastarbandi' ritual after which they went to Anjuman Office and saw
the 'Jhalra' water tank in the dargah premise.

Subject: [arr] MY BIG DREAM OF THE DECADE CAME TRUE

17TH October 2009……
Diwali – the Hindu Festival of Light……
My Birthday too…….

NETHERLANDS

My `big dream of the decade' came true…in a most unexpected way.

It was around 4.30 p.m. and I was chatting online with my sister, telling her
how depressed I was because I was going to miss another chance to see my `Hero'
– A R Rahman – who would be attending an award ceremony 350km away in
neighbouring Belgium.

While we were chatting, the doorbell rang, making me jump, so I logged off and
went to see who was at the door – it was my good friend, Dinesh.

Opening the door, he gave me a big hug and greeted me with "happy birthday and
may all your dreams come true!" I thanked him but told him that I only had one
dream and no way was that going to come true! Dinesh asked me what I was
talking about.

"My Guruji is attending an award ceremony in Belgium", I replied. Dinesh was a
little upset and said, "He is not only your Guruji but mine too!" I apologised
to Dinesh and told him that all the tickets for the ceremony had been sold the
previous week – I have known that since two days before. I didn't have a car –
or a driving license, for that matter – and if I went by train, I would not be
able to get back home as the ceremony didn't finish until 11.00 p.m. What's
more, I did not know anyone in Belgium, so had no local support.

"Sorry", my `Rahmaniacs' , I didn't tell you what the ceremony was about. It
was the `World Soundtrack Academy Awards' and was being held in the city of
Gent.

OK, back to how I could make my big dream come true.
Dinesh suggested that we call the place where the ceremony was being held and
ask again about tickets. "OK," I said, "I'll do it" and dialled the Awards
office number.
"How may I help you?" the receptionist asked.
I told her that I was calling from the Netherlands and asked if there were any
tickets available for that evening's awards programme. I didn't need to tell
Dinesh that the receptionist' s reply had been, "I am sorry to say that all the
tickets have been sold" – it was obvious from the way I looked at him.

I did not hang-up however but told the receptionist, "Look, I am A R Rahman's
craziest fan – I don't care if I don't get to talk with him – just to see him
would be enough. At what time will the guests be at the entrance? Is it
possible just to stand there to get a look at him? Please help me madam! My
home is 350 km away from Gent and it will take me almost 3 hours by car to get
there. Dinesh could hear all this as I had switched my `phone to
`speaker-phone' .

After a while, the receptionist said, "Look, I know how much you guys love A R
Rahman… let me talk to my colleague". - my face got brighter – "The show is
going to start around
8.00p.m. but the doors will be open between 6.00p.m. and 7.45p.m. and that's
when all the VIP's will arrive; then there's a break at 9.00p.m….oh, just a
minute" she said.

After a short time, she came back on the line and told us, "you guys might just
be lucky…you might get two tickets after the break but I can't promise anything
because it depends on whether people stay for the second part of the ceremony."
That last sentence left our hearts racing and I could hardly form my words to
thank her. She laughed and hung up.

Now, the next problem was the car! Dinesh had a license but did not have his
own motor. "I'm going to `phone a car rental company", he said, and by the time
I was going to remind him that today was a Saturday, he was already being told,
"Yep, we have a car available" and Dinesh told him that he would collect it in
5 minutes. I couldn't believe our luck.

I looked at the clock and saw that it was 5 minutes past 5.00p.m and my mind
could think of nothing except getting the car and driving straight to Gent.
Dinesh told me he would collect the car and be back to pick me up in 10 minutes
and that I should be ready and waiting on the street!

Although my stomach was churning and my nerves were on a knife-edge, the
thought of the ceremony in Gent helped reduce the tension. I just wanted to see
my hero's humble face and tell him, "Guruji, I love you, jai ho!" even if it
was some distance away from him. That's all I was thinking.

Out on the street, I saw a new Nissan approaching, with Dinesh at the wheel. I
was jumping up and down as though I had taken the winning catch in the last
cricket match of the season! Dinesh knew that I was not feeling well so
suggested I got in the back seat and try to sleep.

To get there at the time the receptionist

Totally agree. I was very very very dissapointed with Fiqrana, they totally
ruined the class of the song by shooting a video of that kind. :(. Just hoping
they do some justice to Rehnuma and Yaar Mila...

Really hurt after watching Blue Theme (new version), Bhoola Tujhe and

un-appealing :(

Not even 1% justice done with such amazing songs ; just my opinion though..

Re: [arr] ARR - The Center of My Musical Gravity

2009-09-30 Thread manisha madhavan
Rightly said Chord...I feel the same way. I have been basically brought up all
my life outside India...so am always exposed to various artists and genres. But
no matter how many other artist's works i listen to...ARR GREATLY dominates all
my playlists. Its only his music I feel that I have a personal connection to.
Whenever I listen to any of ARR Sir's work I feel as though my heart, soul, and
mind just get pulled towards each tone, each note, each beat. I feel like the
music has almost taken over my body and emotions and that nothing exists else
exists except the beautiful sound going into my ears and spreading through
every blood cell. Though I do have some fav pieces and songs from other
artists, I think only ARR's work till now has had this kind of effect on
me It really just pulls you towards it...there is some divine power and
energy in every note that he composes, no doubt!!

Subject: [arr] ARR - The Center of My Musical Gravity

I'm a very musical person. Music is essential for my day to day living,
helping me to stay in touch with my emotions, helping to ward off negative
thoughts, helping to motivate, helping to energize, helping to stay grounded.
It goes beyond mere pleasure ..it helps me grow, think in different ways,
and generates compassion towards others (good music).

I try to listen to as many artists as I possibly canfrom India, all the MDs
works that sound interesting, classical and semi classical artists, fusion
artists, etc. From the West, I'm a big fan of 80s pop, classic rock from the
70s and 80s (Rush, Pink Floyd, Boston); also love techno and trance (Pet Shop
Boys). Also like to listen to Western classical music, since that is my
musical background, playing the piano having taken Western classical music
lessons as a child. Also love some hollywood soundtracks (recent example,
Curious Case of Benjamin Button by Alexandre Desplat HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! )

Problem I have right now is timebetween family and work, I don't have much
time to search new music, spend hours searching and listening to various
artists and new music, nevermind not even being able to keep up with the
collection I already have! So, what do I do? Follow the musical path of least
resistance and strongest musical gravitational pull.ARR.

ARR's music is tops for me. I enjoy his music more than I enjoy any other
artists' music out there, yet I don't want to limit my listening enjoyment just
to him. But, these days, I feel I have no choice in some ways, esp. since
there have been so many ARR releases in the past 2 years. If I happen to hear
a soundtrack from another artist by recommendation, I will listen and try to
attach myself to it, but invariably, ARR has been the center of my musical
gravity. If I listen to someone else's work for a while, no matter how good it
is and how much I enjoy it, I need to always reset my musical barometer and
return back to ARR's compositions for refueling!

ARR's music today meets all of my musical needsenergizing music, spiritual
music, touching/melodious music, relaxing/soulful music, Indian semi classical
music, Western classical music, pop, jazz, smooth jazz, dance, rock, you name
it. His output is so incredibly diverse, that I just don't feel the urge to
seek out musical satisfaction elsewhere, although I will appreciate another
artist's compositions if I come across a good one. I just keep going back to
ARR.

Mumbai: After Hrs has learnt that AR Rahman is putting up a grand musical show
in Los Angeles before the premiere of his forthcoming Hollywood venture.

It promises to be a first-of-its- kind event in Hollywood and the guest list
includes Hollywood A-listers like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Brad Pitt and
Angelina Jolie, Owen Wilson and Sean Penn, besides David and Victoria Beckham,
among others. Incidentally, they are all friends of actor Vince Vaugh, who has
written the script of the film.

A source close to the development says, "For this grand musical night, Rahman
will belt out numbers from his English movie Couples Retreat. Atlanta Soul
singer PJ Morton has sung one track in the movie and will also feature in this
event alongside Rahman. This will be very different from the usual formal
premiere nights in Hollywood. Since the movie has an Indian collaboration, the
idea was to add a lot of vibrancy, colour and music."

Rahman's special aide confirmed the news saying, "A big event is being planned
in Los Angeles where the who's who of America will be present. The movie's
premiere is definitely going to be a star-studded affair but we cannot share
the complete guest list."

they are right about one thing.. having a song (however good that is) at the
cost of $ 1 Million just to show a dance is ridiculously expensive.

but i hope they do retain it at towards the end or something. It is still a
good song.

[arr] Vellai Pookal going to be used to campaign Water Conservation w/ ARR featuring in vid.

2009-09-28 Thread manisha madhavan
A.R. Rahman's water conservation message
Padma Iyer [September 28, 2009, 5:49:56 PM]

Twin Oscar winner A.R. Rahman has indeed charmed the whole world. He is
currently working with some of the biggest names in international music and at
the same time, doing his bit for the betterment of the world.
Following his anti-poverty anthem for the UN, the Mozart of Madras is now
joining the likes of U2 and Shakira for a global video on water conservation.
The video was shot in Filmistan Studios recently. This music video will be
aired worldwide through the Internet. The 120 minute webcast is titled 'Moving
Stars And Earth For Water' and will also feature U2, Peter Gabriel and Shakira.

Rahman's 3.40-minute music video is based on the musical track 'Vellai Pookal'
penned by Vairamuthu, from the movie Kannathil Mutthamittal. This Mani Ratnam
classic had won Rahman the National Award. Talking about why he chose this
particular track, Rahman said that he always relied on his instincts for music
and this track felt perfect for the theme of water conservation.

The video, directed by Deepak Gattani, founder of Rapport Global, will feature
Rahman (dressed in white) and kids as the song is addressed to the young
generation of today.

The 'Moving Stars And Earth For Water' webcast is pioneered by the Canadian
foundation One Drop and it hopes to raise worldwide awareness on water
conservation.

Re: [arr] sajna - kunal ganjawala

2009-09-25 Thread manisha madhavan
I don't think its Kunal's voice. It sounds more of a non-Indian voice because
of the accent. I even tweeted the Vince Vaughn fanclub asking if they know its
him who sang...and they said could be and directed me to Farshad's blog to read
more...LOL. I mean there were articles before saying that "ARR gets Vince to
croon for CR", and the song is a melody...so this might be it!?

I guess we have to wait till the CDs hit the store to really find out details...

Re: [arr] Ph.D. Dissertation on Rahman's music?

2009-09-20 Thread manisha madhavan
ichord, what a wonderful thought! You already have a thesis formulated, just
have to pitch it to someone in that department/field, and maybe you can write
one yourself :)...ur right, there is such large body of work of ARR to use as
evidence and also even stronger responses and reactions from lay people and
media releases in both the Indian and International arena regarding his work.
It would be a wonder to read :)

Subject: [arr] Ph.D. Dissertation on Rahman's music?

We all know ARR is now a doctor 3 times over with his 3 honorary doctorates.
He is truly deserving of these degrees. However, wouldn't it be cool if
someone did their Ph.D. dissertation or thesis on his music? Would that be
even possible? I think it is!

Imagine someone pursuing their Ph.D. in anthropology of music or
ethno-musicology. "The phrase anthropology of music is most closely associated
with Alan P. Merriam's 1964 landmark book bearing this title. In this
prescriptive text, influential through the 1980s, Merriam defines
ethno-musicology as the study of music in culture in relation to the mutual
interactions of sound, behavior, and concepts."

Above quote taken from:
http://science. jrank.org/ pages/7893/ Music-Anthropolo gy.html#ixzz0Rff ZiTPx

Someone could easily pick AR Rahman's music from India as a theoretical
dissertation topic, highlighting how Rahman's music not only represents the
broad diversity of Indian culture, but how his music, like India, absorbs
various world influences to form its coherent identity from a conceptual basis
and its subsequent impact on human behavior and culture. Rahman has enough of
a volume of both domestic and international music for someone to really study
and create a dissertation. It would be absolutely fascinating!

2009-09-18 Thread manisha madhavan
Also Theeyil Vizhundha Thenna from Varalaru (Godfather)  is an amazing
compostition with such heart-wrenching lyrics and no doubt in my opinion one
of the most soul stirring songs sung by BOSS himself. Its also about mother-son
relationship, and gets me in tears everytime i listen to it...

One of my fav lines in that song:
Ennakedhum aanathenuna unnaku veru pillai undu (if something happens to me you
have another son)
Unnakethum aanathuna yennaku veru thayirukka? (if something happens to you, do
i have another mother?) aahhh...

WOWOWOW...this song gets me everytime..and i don't think it has gained enough
recognition as it should have...

I don't know, is it just me or do others feel the same?

- Energetic
- Charismatic
- hip flavour

One analogy i can think of to describe this album...is waves apporaching you as
you stand by the ocean. At first when its distant the effect is slow and subtle
and you don't really feel it, but as it gets closer to you within time...it
just hits you with a BURST of energy and force and you are left feeling totally
refreshed and invigorated, and can't wait for it to come again and again!! This
album just gets to you as drown deeper and deeper into it.

Can't stop listening to it!!

IMHO, One of ARR's most rocking, glossiest, flashiest albums in ages. More
later. Heard all the songs from a friend in Chennai who has the CD. Can't wait

Circus entrepreneur details water extravaganza from space
Submitted by Sahil Nagpal on Thu, 09/03/2009

Los Angeles - The founder of Cirque du Soleil announced plans Wednesday to use
his upcoming space trip to host a two-hour extravaganza about the importance of
access to clean water across the globe.
Guy Laliberte said in a webcast that the gala would take place on October 9
aboard the International Space Station and from 14 cities as well. Among the
terrestrial guests on the show will be US former vice president Al Gore,
supergroup U2, Indian musician AR Rahman and pop stars Peter Gabriel and
Shakira.
Laliberte, 49, is due to take off on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft on September 30
for a 12-day round trip to the International Space Station. Laliberte's fortune
is estimated at some 2.5 billion dollars, and he paid an estimated 30 million
dollars for the trip.
The event, called Moving Stars and Earth for Water is thought to be the first
organized art show from space. In a webcast, Laliberte described it as a
"poetic social mission" aimed at highlighting the importance of water for
Planet Earth.
The idea of the show will be to present a "poetic fairy tale" that will tell
the importance of water through the perspective of four characters: the sun,
the moon, the stars and a single drop of water.
The show has been written by Canadian author Yann Martel, (Life of Pi) and will
feature many of the extravagant acts that have made Cirque du Soleil famous
around the world, Laliberte said. Though he might don his clown's nose for the
show, he joked that he won't be allowed to perform fire-eating tricks in orbit.
"People should see it as a moment where the voices of the world are unifying in
a specific moment and participating at an event together to talk about water,"
he said. "This is a moment of great friendship, of great artistic rendering, I
believe, and hopefully this artistic project will touch people."
The cities that will host events include Montreal, Moscow, Johannesburg,
Mumbai, Marrakesh, Sydney, Tokyo, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Paris and
London, as well as the US cities New York, Santa Monica, California, and Tampa,
Florida. Laliberte will coordinate the performances from the space station and
will be the seventh private explorer to travel to space. (dpa)

Finally, the world is recognizing the genius of Indian music wizard A R Rahman.
After winning two Oscars on the same night, Rahman has now won the 'Grassroot
Grammy' award held in the US.

The composer bagged the top prize for the soundtrack in the Tamil film
`Godfather' in the 'Best Indian album' category at the 'Just Plain Folks 2009
Music Awards' held recently.

Among the other artists nominated in the same category were Bangla band
'Krosswindz' and south composer Ilayaraja.

Rahman's composition 'Innisai' (Radio Mix) from `Godfather' also won the third
place in the 'Best Indian Song' category while his 'Illamai' was fifth.

Ilyaraja's "Music Journey: Live in Italy" was third in the 'Best Indian album'
category. In 'Indian Classical and Traditional Album' category Shweta Jhaveri's
"Avishkar" clinched the first position.

The 'Just Plain Folks 2009 Music Awards' is aimed at supporting grassroot
songwriters and musicians through networking, education and promotional
support. The awards received responses from over 163 countries. It has over
50,000 members worldwide.

[arr] The greatness of ALMIGHTY -- A magical encounter with ARR

2009-09-02 Thread manisha madhavan

I had posted this on my Facebook profile last month. Thought I would share it
here too, after Farzad's suggestion. I have read many Rahmaniacs' experiences
meeting ARR Sir, each one unique and extremely touching. It truly is a moment
of ultimate bliss, as i felt it myself! Well here is my story, if you have
some free time on you hands, please do read. (WARNING: its quite long)

YES! ...i guess it WAS written...:-D
Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 5:52pm

Honestly, don't know where to start. Each time I replay the moment in my mind,
it feels like it was a dream. I keep asking myself, 'Did it actually happen?
Did I actually see ARR Sir? Did I actually shake his hand? Did i really talk to
him?'..YES!...and it was totally unbelievable and still gives me goosebumps
even as i type this.

The day was August 7th, 2009; a day that will be special and close to my heart
in this life and more. Actually come to think of it, this day would not have
even happened as it did. My flight tickets were all booked and I was supposed
leave to Mumbai from Chennai on 7th morning. Special thanks to my friend for
talking some sense into me, saying that i should postpone my ticket, as 7th
evening was KMMC's one year completion celebration, and ARR Sir might be coming
to the function. So I ended up cancelling my flight and re-booking it for the
8th.

So there I was on the 7th at KMMC's first annual day function. Actually I felt
blessed just being there in that music academy hall in Mylapore, just watching
ARR's students practicing and doing final rehearsals for the big night. All
these years I have been following Rahman Sir, watching interviews, reading
articles, and I knew how much this school meant to him, and for that school to
be completing one whole year successfully was an amazing accomplisment in
itself. Thus i was truly happy just to be present there and be part of it.

The show was scheduled to start at 6 pm, and the time was nearing. I went to
sit closer (row 6) so i could get a better view of the stage. The stage was set
up so beautifully and very 'classy', just as ARR Sir would have wanted it. So i
was just sitting there quietly observing all the people (mostly friends and
family of KMMC students) getting seated. Then saw all of ARR's family including
his sisters and family, ARR's wife and children, and his mother taking a seat
in the front row. One note to add is that ARR Sir's wife looks even more
ravishing and gorgeous in person than she does in the pictures I have seen of
her. The time was almost nearing 7 and still no sign of ARR Sir. However, there
was an empty seat next to his mother so I was positive that Rahman Sir would
show up. And YES, he finally entered through the side door, wearing his simple
white kurtha and radiating goodness all over. The whole auditorium stood to
give a welcome ovation. YES!
Finally, I had seen the great man himself. What a feeling of pure joy and
happiness!! And what was even more amazing was that I was sitting just 5 rows
directly behind him and there was nobody sitting in the seats directly in
front, so had a clear view throughout the show. Could see when Sir was watching
the show in pure focus or when he was bopping his head for some of the songs,
or when he was whispering something to his mother on his left or to the dean of
Middlesex University on his right. The best moment was when his cute little son
sat on sir's lap, and ARR was happily talking to him. These were truly
unforgettable moments that I feel soo fortunate to have witnessed. And of
course with brilliant performances from KM students and breathtaking
performances from the KM faculty, I was just in heaven. This was really a
magical way to end my trip, with this blissful thing called music.

After the concert ended, ARR Sir was called on stage to say a few words, and
then presented each of the students with certificate of completion. Then he
soon went backstage, and the lights of the auditorium came on and everybody
started to leave. At this moment I really had mixed feelings. I was extremely
ecstatic that I got to see Rahman Sir just 5 rows away. But i was slightly sad
that I could not capture this moment on camera, as no photography was allowed.
But i was definitely not disappointed. I mean all these years I have only seen
him on TV, internet or through binoculars, but now i just saw him in flesh and
blood through my own eyes. So that itself made my spirit rise. But I never
expected what was to come next. Never in my life I would have imagined the
following would happen:

As I was talking to one of the most humble Rahmaniacs, i saw a crowd gathering
on stage. Then my friend came and I asked him if ARR was on stage. And he was
like YES...you can go up on stage and see if you can catch a closer glimpse of
ARR. So he lead me up stage and there I was among everyone else and ARR Sir. At
first I could not see him, but i saw many people taking pics, so I too pulled

What gives?

When we get to see it?
