While I agree that other players like Creative, iRiver, Cowon are
(possibly) better sounding, its difficult to counter the vast ecosystem
that apple has built around the ipod -- lo-tech or hi-end accessories
available for it's players is enormous. even the 2nd most popular player
(Creative Zen I'm guessing) doesn't have a tenth of accessories (incl.
hi-end docks, cables, etc) as the ipod.
as for the players a quick check showed they support these lossless
formats:
creative -- AAC only -- i'm guessing the lossless version alsoipod --
apple losslessiriver -- FLAC cowon -- FLAC, APE
cowon offers the best range of formats (lossless and otherwise),
followed very closely by iriver. at number three is creative and finally
the fourth place in the formats race goes to the industry leading ipod!

RE: [arr] any 'Audiophiles' on this group?

2009-10-09 Thread wiredbeats .

hey!
there is nothing like lossless mp3s. aac is a different format which gives
better performance for lower bitrate. 128 aac can perform as a 256 mp3.
While ripping select lossless wav or do a FLAC rip.
Your EP630 and the likes are in-ear phones that give you good lower ranges.Bass
basically. Any such headphones with 20 to 20,000 Hz frequency response is good
enough. Also check for soundlevels if they are around 100Db.
But careful with in-ear headphones. Dont share them often it leads to ear
infection.

wb
PS : I know this is non-arr but a little discussion on topic this will only
help all of us identify the right toys to enjoy his music the way its meant to
be. Is it not?

You can always rip lossless mp3s or AACs to keep the sound
quality close to the CD. There is also general agreement amongst audiophiles
that 192 kbps is a rate that is close enough to the CD at the same time
providing the convenience of lesser file size..

iPod stock earphones are horrible. Sennheiser, Grado or AKG are good low end
audiophile quality headphones. If you have more money to shell you can consider
the Shures, etymotic research and ultimate ears. These provide a divine mid and
high range...

Re: [arr] any 'Audiophiles' on this group?

2009-10-08 Thread niyant_dalal
rajib - i don't know about the answer to your question, but I would
expect the larger ipods to have better DACs and hence be able to produce
a cleaner sound. obviously these may be perceivable only with
audiophile-quality output (headphones or speakers). it would be good to
hear from someone if they've done a one-to-one comparison with good
quality headphones.
there are many (mostly expensive to very expensive) ways of getting
clean output from ipods that are discussed on audiophile forums -- some
companies offer to modify your ipod's analog output (line out) to reduce
the amount of deterioration that occurs due to the analog transport to
your line out. there are others like 'wadia itransport' that offer
audiophile-grade ipod docks that completely bypass the DAC on the ipod
to transfer digital signals to your receivers / amps / etc.
there's a good 'audiophile' review of one of the older ipod classics
that might interest some:

-1.html
http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_14_1/ipod-bench-tested-3-2007-par\
t-1.html
but from what i hear, the purists would mostly not consider mp3s as a
good software source ... from a sound quality perspective its this:
vinyl, sacd, dvd audio cd, lossless mp3 / aac / flac / ape
mp3

the given one and all it's control is on the given headphone itself :-(
http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/ http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/
Bfo buying iPod i used to listen to songs with speakers , and so many china
Mp3/mp4/mp5 players I found huge differences between china players and
iPod ...that is y m saying iPod is good ...i am yet to test those
Audiophiles equipments and more importantly those headphones speakers
arent available here

btw anyone tried ipod shuffle ?? with it's headphone ? apple claimed therez
a lot of improvement in terms of sound quality in these headphone . as i
havent tried any other ipod bfo ...so i cant comment if they really improved
the sound quality ... any comments on these ??

Honestly. iPOD headphones are horrible in reproduction. Buy any good sennhieser
entry level is some 570 rupees. check the difference the same device gives. And
no, there are not many things that will disappear in an MP3 when you covert.
The fidelity suffers but it makes it up when you listen in a headphones
environment.

 wooden
bookshelf speakers with system of about 150 RMS will be just fine for a
small room. Like a Hostel room.

Firstly, throw your iPOD headphones into the trash. The device works
fine, but pathetic headphones. For your regular use like running,GYMing
etc buy the Sennheiser that comes in a green box ( don't know the model
number). Costs about 1500 rupees. It takes your iPOD audio to a
different level. However, i found HD 595 Senheisser the awesomest one!
Bose also works, but dont pay that much seriously. MP3 is MP3, you wont
get some magic extra sounds and most of today's bollywood music is
compressed and fedility is missing ( this included BLUE also, sorry ...).
Blue sounds bad even in good headphones. Seriously, whats with that?
  Audiophiles thingy
Well, investing on sound is not a bad idea only if you are listening
to that kind of a material in its original medium. And this does not
include Original MP3 CDs! Some of these Sony CD contain 'Super MP3!!'

The thing is, Audiophiles range is no doubt superior but it depends
a lot on listening ambiance. Mostly we live in apartments with lot of
world noises and volume issues. With this we only end up under utilizing
the machines. And if you hookup an MP3 player you are just wasting your
money in those.
Most materials are not produced for Audiophiles.

you won't find 5.1 effect in audio CDs. Its not meant for it. Super

2009-10-02 Thread wiredbeats .

Hmm Sony NC are ok.Basically the technology is not very versatile to innovate.
As in you cannot have many ways to make NC phones. It usually depends on the
build quality and the ambient anti-noise cancellation range.
Most of them believe NC phones fit so tightly to ears that outside noise does
not enter!! how wrong.
Sony NCs are fine, but do check out thier new compact 'in ear' NC phones. They
are super cool and very easy to carry. You can just hang em' and carry around.
Unlike the drums that you wear around your ears.
Grado is vintage stuff..super they are. Usually used by live performance sound
engineers in stages and also my sound recordists in soundstages. If you have a
pair of these..great!
However, we should enjoy these phones using a portable CD player and not
MP3!!..the Sony portable CD player and your grado or something of that class is
heaven. Try Rahman's Taal in those..!!
Someone told me Grado also has a reference versions of their phones. I am sure
they are good..

hey!

i don't know about all that. Just that i am a huge fan of headphones and i try
and collect some rare or some sorta expensive ones. But in audio stuff
expensive does not mean good!..there are some basic ipod headphones for even
1000 rupees by sennheiser that are damn cool, esply the bass response. Try it
or try 'JBL reference' headphones i think it costs 2500 rupees, an absolute
stunner.
OK, here is the little i know and it works
Home Theatre
Dont go by the number of speakers. Some sony models come with 5 center button
speakers and woofer of 4 channels thats like 11 speakers!! - Farce. Just take
any 850RMS above home theatre with auto/manual calibration. Use manual
calibration for rear right and rear left and notch it by say 1.5 dB. treble
sounds crispper then. Works for ALL RAHMAN DISCS.
Don't
go by the size of the woofer. As long as its in a wooden box its fine. However,
don't ever push the woofer into a corner of the room. It booms and the bass
reproduction is wrong. You are looking for a rumble not windows rattling. Move
your woofer about half feet away from walls. Test it by playing Maula Maula
track from Delhi 6 ( a suble bass line that sounds so great!!)
If you have some cash to blow try these
Jamo S 606 home speaker systemsHarmom Kardon HKTS series
And yes, i agree Bose is over rated. Its great but lot of other guys have
caught on and now theres very little difference. Go right ahead and by anything
nice thats has packed speakers in wood. Not plastic.
And if you get a DVD/CD player with the package but it. Normally u only get an
AMP. In that case PLEASE do not compromise on your DVD player. Don't fit local
 ones.
Play CDs and not MP3s in these systems to judge the output.
Sometimes we might feel the bass or treble is low while playing a CD. But the
sonic range is usually very rich and if you just change your seat it might
sound better.
CD players
I sometimes think standlone systems sound way better. When you buy a HiFI or a
mini HiFi, try and locate one with a manual EQ. This feature is becoming quite
rare and i hate it. I found a pair from Wharfedale quite stunning. But then
don't break your head!, but any neat wooden bookshelf speakers with system of
about 150 RMS will be just fine for a small room. Like a Hostel room.

I'm not one (yet) but like most of us who like listening to music I
surely aspire to get decent configuration some day without blowing a big
hole in my wallet. :)

Btw I own sennheisers too -- they're pretty good sounding. You can
always argue hi-end stuff is for show-off and yes it is a lot of times.
But at the same time you can't deny that a bmw drives much better than
other cars and there is some intrinsic value in it's engineering beyond
the snob-factor.

There area lot of audiophile forums that caution people to steer away
from over-priced Bose systems. You can get much more 'sound for your
buck' with other systems. They're good sounding systems but not really
what their marketing claims as 'best-in-class'. A few posts I've read in
the past, though I don't want to turn this into a Bose-bashing thread:
http://www.hometheaterblog.com/hometheater/2006/03/what-about-bose-part-\
1/
http://www.thetechlounge.com/news/10431/Why+Bose+Sucks/
http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-3266.html

I was hoping to learn from people who had spent the time to research /
setup entry-level hi-end audio hardware.

sonic range is usually very rich and if you just change your seat it might
sound better.
Headphones
Firstly, throw your iPOD headphones into the trash. The device works fine, but
pathetic headphones. For your regular use like running,GYMing etc buy the
Sennheiser that comes in a green box ( don't know the model number). Costs
about 1500 rupees. It takes your iPOD audio to a different level. However, i
found HD 595 Senheisser the awesomest one! Bose also works, but dont pay that
much seriously. MP3 is MP3, you wont get some magic extra sounds and most of
today's bollywood music is compressed and fedility is missing ( this included
BLUE also, sorry ...). Blue sounds bad even in good headphones. Seriously, whats
with that?
Audiophiles thingy
Well, investing on sound is not a bad idea only if you are listening to that
kind of a material in its original medium. And this does not include Original
MP3 CDs! Some of these Sony CD contain 'Super MP3!!' what the heck is that!
The thing is, Audiophiles range is no doubt superior but it depends a lot on
listening ambiance. Mostly we live in apartments with lot of world noises and
volume issues. With this we only end up under utilizing the machines. And if
you hookup an MP3 player you are just wasting your money in those.
Most materials are not produced for Audiophiles.
Dos and Don'ts for playing audio CDs
Don't look for surround sound in audio CDs. Even if its is Rahman you won't
find 5.1 effect in audio CDs. Its not meant for it. Super Audio CD or SACD is
very rare. I have a few but have not compared with any standard CD medium of
the same track.
Don't increase the volume and think wow. If you can't hear details in 1/3rd
volume then either your setting is wrong or the CD is badly recorded.

hey!
i don't know about all that.
Use
manual calibration for rear right and rear left and notch it by say 1.5 dB.
treble sounds crispper then. Works for ALL RAHMAN DISCS.
Don't go by the size of the woofer. As long as its in a wooden box its
fine. However, don't ever push the woofer into a corner of the room. It booms
and the bass reproduction is wrong. You are looking for a rumble not windows
rattling. Move your woofer about half feet away from walls. Test it by playing
Maula Maula track from Delhi 6 ( a suble bass line that sounds so great!!)
Don't fit local
ones.

Are you ? What is your configuration ? and how much did it all cost ?

One of the first myths that was busted early on by one of my friends was
that Bose makes crappy systems!!! (What??? you may ask). They have great
marketing, but unfortunately doesn't make the cut for most audiophiles.

So, you are saying Bose does not make crappy systems and still it
doesn't make the cut for most audiophiles ? I thought Bose did make
great sound systems. But i couldn't even afford one.

The only thing I listen music with is a Sennheiser earphone. It is
much better than that crappy ipod earphones, so I am happy with it.
But having a studio built into your home with the most expensive sound
systems in the world is just waste of time and money, of course unless
 you are that rich.

you could always argue that these brands you mentioned give high
quality sound. But I think most of these so called Audiophiles do that
because they just want to show off their equipments and their superior
 taste.

I have seen rich gamers building costliest gaming rigs with a super
computer's configuration, just so that they can play games?
 craziness.

 That's just my opinion :)
