Thanks lj.longwing, Carey Matthew Black and Rocky Rockwell for your
answers and suggestions.
But the solution that propose (open form in a new window) I can't do
it for requirements of my client. I need to open the second form in a
current window and when close the window, don't loose data in fields,
in main form.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Re: Open window help

2008-08-19 Thread Carey Matthew Black
Dear ars.developer,

I really do not even like suggesting this... but

One option might be create a GUID, and save the record in the
form. Then open the new window and pass in the GUID that the UI needs
to go back to later. When the second form is done then you need to
open the old form by finding the record that you saved and opening it
in modify mode. (Or if your first form is a display only form then
create a real form that has a matching field for every field on the
Display only form and have the Display only form do a set fields
operation to repopulate the fields as if they had not changed.)

However, this is _not_ a best practice as this approach requires
much more maintenance later and is much easier to break due to
pending changes in the system.

I would appeal to the client and try to understand _why_ it has to be
the same window. I really doubt it enhances the business process for
the application to work that way.

Re: Loading Mappings failed: The import was not attempted- arimportcmd from the command line

2008-08-19 Thread Carey Matthew Black
Chris,

It may be a typo... but where is the -x flag?

arimportcmd
 -u user_name
[-p password]
 -x server_name
[-w external_authentication_string]
[-r rpc_number]
[-a port_number]
[-l log_file_path]
[-e duplicate_field]
[-n suppress_filters]
[-t multi_match_option]
[-o data_file_name]
[-f destination_form_name]
[-v force_override]

[
-M fully_qualified_mapping_file_name
]
OR
[
-m mapping name
-d Mapping directory
]

Use either a combination of -m and -d, or -M, to specify the mapping
to use. You cannot use both the combination of -m and -d with -M; they
are mutually exclusive.

FWIW: The v7.1 doc (Pg 206 of Integrating-710.pdf) seem to suggest
that -x is optional when using a mapping file. However I suspect that
is only true when using the -M option. ( But I may be interpolating to
much on these features. YMMV.) And the Importing without mapping
appears to indicated that -x is required. So maybe it is just a bug
that the server name is not used from the mapping file?

Anyways.. It just a WAG.. ( It is really hard to guess what could be
wrong when there is no reported error. Did the log file have anything
in it? )

 arimportcmd.exe -u ** -p -a 51000 -l arlog.txt -m

He's called BMC support (Friday) but nothing from them yet, and he's seen a

Does anyone have any information about this error?

I did see an older post on the list from 2005 doing something similar in
6.3, but there was no resolution there. Only some of us on the list have
reverted back to using the 5.x Import tool to perform our imports.

OK, I'm going to attempt to use a 5.x version of arimportcmd to see if it
 will work.

 Wish me luck...

Re: Open window help

2008-08-19 Thread LJ Longwing
I have never even considered the fact that a 'close window' action in a
browser causes it to go back to be a 'feature', I have always considered
that to be a 'bug', but that's just meI have always preferred how the
client does it...open window action opens a new window...and close window
action closes the current window. It wasn't until this thread that I even
started to consider it a feature that someone would want to use. As I
stated before, I remember hearing on the list a few weeks ago about the fact
that IE6 used to work with this functionality, and IE7 'broke' itwith
that in mind it may be a 'security' feature of IE7 that prevents forms from
being retrieved if the back button is used or something. With that in mind,
Microsoft usually allows for disabling of 'features' that they implement
that changes the behavior from previous versionsso if you can find a
workstation with only ie6 on it...and then verify that it's working...you
may be able to use that knowledge to somehow tweak a IE7 to work the way you
need?

Re: Email 7.1 engine not sending mail

2008-08-19 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
Actually that password is correct. In the log I can see it successfully
connects to the Remedy server. I ran the engine in debug mode and found
it is failing after the EHLO to the SMTP server. For some reason the
engine is trying to do an AUTH command to the SMTP server when it is not
necessary. What's strange is I can use the 6.3 Email engine (with the
Application Service password for Remedy) against the 7.1 server with no
problems.

In the log I can see: DEBUG SMTP: useEhlo true, useAuth true

I need to find out if I can set the Java mail.smtp.auth property to
false.

Question for the List !!!
Is anyone using the combination SUN Solaris, ARS 7.1 (and Email
engine 7.1), and SMTP (with no SMTP password) to send emails?

Hi Fred,

This error is occurred because the password entered or
configured in email message configuration form is wrong.

I have tried this thing on my machine I have faced same
problem I have the snapshot for same error as well so please check the
password again.

You can also modify the password by

1) Modifying the emailstart.bat file and add the -p password option
to the java command in the file. Run it once and this should fix your
authentication problem.

2) Open ARSystem Email mailbox Configuration form then check
the user name password you have entered please enter it correctly
click save.

You can view this error by viewing AR System Email Error Logs
form.

Please check attachment for error snapshot.

Hope this helps...

Re: ARS with SQL 2005 Database Mirroring setup

2008-08-19 Thread Kaiser Norm E CIV USAF 96 CS/SCCE
This is the root challenge of a SQL mirror in a Remedy environment.

There are two fundamental high availability/failover options in Microsoft SQL:
Mirroring and clustering. With a mirror, two or more instances of Microsoft
SQL server operate in tandem to share data. The issue with this, however, is
that both instances of SQL have their own respective instance names. Thus, to
applications, it is clear that these are two different SQL servers. This is
not much of a problem with custom built apps because, as you indicate, in a
custom built app you control the connection string.

In Remedy, however, because the code is compiled and closed-source, you have no
access to the connection string.

So in a mirrored environment, everything hums along seemingly fine until the
dreaded day that your primary database fails. At that point, your Remedy
server does not know to talk to the failover because, to Remedy, it doesn't
even exist.

With clustering, on the other hand, two or more machines are combined into one
virtual instance of SQL. Thus you can configure two separate servers into a
cluster and those two separate machines appear on the network and to
applications as ONE database server. Thus, one server can fail but the cluster
will just continue humming along and your application is none the wiser.

Clustering, to me, seems to be the best option for Remedy environments;
however, from my understanding it still requires special, expensive hardware
(i.e., dedicated fiber channel) to connect the disk drives.

In my current environment we employ transaction log shipping, but that's a warm
failover, not hot.

I would be very interested in reading the comments of other listers on this
subject and how they tackle the issue.

Do you get to a point where you stop getting logs and nothing at all is
happening on either server. If you are still actively getting logs, it is
probably just busy doing something (and failing) and not hung up. How long did
you wait? It could take hours depending on the systems and their power and
speed.

I haven't applied patch 8 myself (recently applied patch 7), this is just some
patching experience on a number of products.

ARDBC Configuration Issue

2008-08-19 Thread J.T. Shyman
Windows 2003

AR 7.1 p3

I'm trying to configure AREA and ARDBC to an Active Directory server. I can
browse the server when using ldapbrowser and the credentials I've been
given. However, when I configure the ARDBC in Remedy User and then try to
create a new vendor form in Remedy Administrator, Remedy Administrator hangs
for about a minute and then I get an empty vendor form creation box. If I
remove the ARDBC configuration, or just the server address, then creating a
new vendor form shows REMEDY.ARDBC.APPQUERY, REMEDY.ARDBC.FLASHBOARD.FORM
and REMEDY.ARDBC.SERVER.ADMINISTRATION immediately.

It appears to me that something is causing the LDAP plugin to hang and this
causes the entire plugin server to hang which causes other problems such as
slow logins and an inability to look at user licenses.

Is there any way to tell if this issue is related to the Active Directory or
is a BMC/Remedy issue?

I've tried limiting the page size to 1000, 100 and 10 to no avail. I've
tried setting the BaseDN to a container with only 6 objects, also to no
avail. I'm not really sure where to go next. Any advice would be
appreciated.

Thanks.

time it took me only about 3 mins to get to 85% and then it just
stopped.

Re: Loading Mappings failed: The import was not attempted- arimportcmd from the command line

2008-08-19 Thread Janie
Carey is right on -x flag.

The Load Mappings failed means one of 2 things: either the mapping file
wasn't found in the command line or there is something wrong in the mapping
file.

I've had better success with using the command line in specific ordered
format and quotes:

arimportcmd.exe -u ** -p -x server -a 51000 -d
F:\Program Files\AR System\HOME\ARCmds -l arlog.txt -m
ImportComputerData

The second thing to check is the contents of ImportComputerData.
- The name of the mapping has to be used (first line in the file)
- The import data file mentioned in the mapping has to be accessible to the
command. Sometimes adding the -o parameter before the -d parameter helps to
indicate if this is the problem.
- The mappings have to be correct or you will get this error.
- I always make the -m parameter the last item on the command line as it is
extremely picky

arimportcmd
 -u user_name

 -x server_name
[-w external_authentication_string]
[-r rpc_number]

[-l log_file_path]
[-e duplicate_field]

[-t multi_match_option]

[-f destination_form_name]
[-v force_override]

[
-M fully_qualified_mapping_file_name
]
OR
[
-m mapping name
-d Mapping directory
]

Did the log file have anything
in it? )

Re: ARDBC Configuration Issue

2008-08-19 Thread Kaiser Norm E CIV USAF 96 CS/SCCE
Hmmm...it does sound like it's hanging, as if it's searching for the
LDAP server and failing to find it.

Configuring the ARDBC form should be fairly easy. We are doing exactly
what you describe and pull from the AD all day long.

On your ARDBC form, I'd check the following:

Host Name: Should be the IP address of the domain controller (use IP
rather than host name to avoid DNS issues)
Port Number: Leave blank
Distinguished Name: Should be your domain\username. You must specify
the domain
Password: The account's associated password
Using Secure Socket Layer: No

P.S. To just connect to and pull from the AD, you only need the ARDBC
configuration -- you don't need to mess with AREA.

Windows 2003

I'm trying to configure AREA and ARDBC to an Active Directory server. I
can browse the server when using ldapbrowser and the credentials I've
been given. However, when I configure the ARDBC in Remedy User and then
try to create a new vendor form in Remedy Administrator, Remedy
Administrator hangs for about a minute and then I get an empty vendor
form creation box. If I remove the ARDBC configuration, or just the
server address, then creating a new vendor form shows
REMEDY.ARDBC.APPQUERY, REMEDY.ARDBC.FLASHBOARD.FORM and
REMEDY.ARDBC.SERVER.ADMINISTRATION immediately.

It appears to me that something is causing the LDAP plugin to hang and
this causes the entire plugin server to hang which causes other problems
such as slow logins and an inability to look at user licenses.

Is there any way to tell if this issue is related to the Active
Directory or is a BMC/Remedy issue?

I've tried limiting the page size to 1000, 100 and 10 to no avail. I've
tried setting the BaseDN to a container with only 6 objects, also to no
avail. I'm not really sure where to go next. Any advice would be
appreciated.

There are two Reported Date fields on HPD:Help Desk.

One is on the Date/System tab (a d/o field) -- 100719 z1D Reported

The real db field is actually on the Classification tab -- 100560

M.B.

Sorry for the incomplete answer. I hit the send button to soon. :(

Yes you need to cross map the value for the field that you want to set
to the field (in the file) that you want it to be set to.
So after you Add All
You need to set 'reported date' = $3$ (or whaterver field ID/field
name you are going to use to backfill the data with) before you do the
import.

BTW: If you look at the 4th line of an ARX file you will see a line like
this...

FLD-ID 4 1 3

This is a space separated list of field ID's that were exported in the
arx file. In the example above fields: 4 , 1, and 3 were exported. I
would bet that your ARX file does not have a 1 as a field ID in the
file.

Also .. I just looked on our ITSM v7 HPD:Helpdesk form and the field 1
name is 'Entry ID' and it has a prefix of INC. ( The 'Incident ID'
field is actually field ID 100161 and has a Field DB name of
Incident Number. This field can not be used to update a record via
the import tool. Unless they finally fixed the idea of doing the
matching on other columns than field 1 when I was not looking. :) )

Submit Date = field ID 3

Which is why you were getting the errors you were getting. Without a
Field 1 value the Import tool assumes that your trying to create a new
record (like a Submit operation) instead of trying to update an
existing record ( like a Modify) operation. ( Keep in mind the filters
that are triggered are neither Submit, nor Modify. Only Merge filters
are triggered directly by the Import tool. Workflow can the trigger
Submit/Modify filters as a result of Push actions, and even Get Entry
filters too (SetField) but those are other topics for other days. So I
hope that does not confuse the issue any.)

But there is a twist I was not expecting
Reported Date = field ID 100719, but it is a display only field (
What the [EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED]@[EMAIL PROTECTED] )
So that means that MAYBE if you import the data into that field
there will be workflow on Merge that puts it where it needs to go to
actually keep the value. The general approrach of using the import
tool to backfill the data should work if you can figure out where it
needs to be kept. Maybe the display only field already has workflow no
merge that will work. I think it is worth a shot at least. I doubt it
can hurt anything. (If you do your field map correctly.)

If the Merge to the display only field fails to get you what your
after then you may need to turn on Filter tracing, do a Submit or a
Modify of a record where you manually set 'Reported Date' to a value
to be able to find where the value is kept in the application. (Sorry
for the confusion, but apparently the field you are likely seeing on
the form is not actually where that data is stored. GRRR.)

I think what's happening is that there's one or the other that's deleting a
bunch of entries from a form, and it's getting hung up, like an Escalation

Just for popularizing people who post job advertisements, may I suggest a
category for recruiters who post ads here regularly that consultants had a
pleasant experience with.. Meaning the job/project/engagement and its

those looking for new engagements some sort of a benchmark to filter posted
opportunities..

Through my past engagements I have had some very good experiences and
fortunately very few not so good experiences (just 1 that I can think of)

ITSM 7.0.3 p7 install (through X Windows) error: Unable to build the patch summary

2008-08-19 Thread Ray T.
Hi folks,
I have an ITSM 703 p3 environment, freshly installed.

I am trying to patch it up to ITSM 703, p7, but can not get the patch
installer to go much far.

I have a VPN connection from my Windows PC to corporate network.

I have a ssh session (putty) from my PC to the ARS box (solaris). I
start the patch installer on the ars box on the putty window.

This installer has a GUI, so the though the installer is running on
the ars box (solaris), through a X windows session, the display comes
to my PC. I'm using Xming on my PC.

The installer's GUI gets to my PC ok, and I answer all the prompts.
Before the installation gets too far, I get an alert popup saying:
Internal Error. Unable to build patch summary. Installation can not continue.

On clicking Ok, the installation bravely tries to continue, as if
unaware that there was any error.

After the screen that asks me to confirm my answers and clicking next,
it seems to do something for a min or two.
Then it says:
An internal error has caused the installer to not complete successfully

And the installation stops.

Re: ARS with SQL 2005 Database Mirroring setup

2008-08-19 Thread DenisBG
So, if you using Log shipping, how you failover ARS-servers in case of
primary DB server fail? Manually changing Server Name in ar.cfg or there is
a more capable way?

Kaiser Norm E CIV USAF 96 CS/SCCE wrote:

This is the root challenge of a SQL mirror in a Remedy environment.

There are two fundamental high availability/failover options in Microsoft
SQL: Mirroring and clustering. With a mirror, two or more instances of
Microsoft SQL server operate in tandem to share data. The issue with
this, however, is that both instances of SQL have their own respective
instance names. Thus, to applications, it is clear that these are two
different SQL servers. This is not much of a problem with custom built
apps because, as you indicate, in a custom built app you control the
 connection string.

In Remedy, however, because the code is compiled and closed-source, you
have no access to the connection string.

So in a mirrored environment, everything hums along seemingly fine until
the dreaded day that your primary database fails. At that point, your
Remedy server does not know to talk to the failover because, to Remedy,
 it doesn't even exist.

With clustering, on the other hand, two or more machines are combined into
one virtual instance of SQL. Thus you can configure two separate servers
into a cluster and those two separate machines appear on the network and
to applications as ONE database server. Thus, one server can fail but the
cluster will just continue humming along and your application is none the
 wiser.

 Clustering, to me, seems to be the best option for Remedy environments;
however, from my understanding it still requires special, expensive
hardware (i.e., dedicated fiber channel) to connect the disk drives.

In my current environment we employ transaction log shipping, but that's a
 warm failover, not hot.

I would be very interested in reading the comments of other listers on
this subject and how they tackle the issue.

 Good day everyone!

Have somebody successfully setup ARS to work with mirrored SQL2005 DB and
 automatically failover?
Ноw I need to configure ARS to know failover partner server name(mirror
DB-server)? MS recommend to use client connection string like
 Server=PRIMARY SERVER; Failover Partner=MIRROR SERVER; Database=DATABASE

 (version 7.1)?

Will be grateful for any help.

Re: ITSM 7.0.3 p7 install (through X Windows) error: Unable to build the patch summary

2008-08-19 Thread Begosh, Kevin
Ray,
I just actually had this issue and the deal is that on the
SHARE:ApplicationProperties form there are records for all the
applications, incident management, change management etc... The problem
is that they do not have the language packs and data language's put in
for them. If you only have English running then you just have to create
a entry in that form for DataLanguage of English, and another entry for
LanguagePacks for en. I just made sure all the entries in this form had
those and mine worked. You can tell which applications you have by
running a query on this form for the property name of Name. This will
list them all and you can tell which ones have these and which ones
don't. I got this from a KB that remedy has. If you put in Internal
Error. Unable to build patch summary. Installation can not continue. On
their support site under KB you should see the same one that says this a
little bit better.

Re: ITSM Application Patch 8 Install Error

2008-08-19 Thread Rick Cook
What that command does is query every record in the form - regardless of
whether it's already found its search criteria - for EACH record it's trying
to delete. The errors are not as severe as they sound, but it does take WAY
more time than necessary. It should be using the API call that contains a
query (see the API manual for the exact name - something like
Application-Delete-Query). That runs through the form ONCE.

However, since you probably can't alter their install procedures, the better
course is to figure out what it's trying to do and do it before it gets
there; i.e. if it's trying to remove some rows from SYS:Action, make sure
that form is free of deletable records before it makes it's call. That at
least will make the call process less slowly.

logs? I think what's happening is that there's one or the other that's
deleting a bunch of entries from a form, and it's getting hung up, like an
Escalation that ties up a thread or a DB timeout or something. If you can
track down the form that's in the delete command, maybe you could just do
the delete manually and see if that frees up the rest of the install.

Do you get to a point where you stop getting logs and nothing at all is
happening on either server. If you are still actively getting logs, it is
probably just busy doing something (and failing) and not hung up. How long
did you wait? It could take hours depending on the systems and their power
 and speed.

I haven't applied patch 8 myself (recently applied patch 7), this is just
some patching experience on a number of products.

File Menu using mid-tier 7.1 /Weblogic 9.2

2008-08-19 Thread Atul Vohra
Hi,

A ARS 6.3 system was upgraded to ARS 7.1 patch 3. Now whenever from web, we try
to select a character menu (file type) it show the selections but when a
selection is made it does not populate the field. This works from the client
side.

Web Server is BEA Weblogic 9.2 (also re-created the issue with Sun Application
Server 9.1). Tested with IE 6 / 7 and Firefox 3.

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards
Atul

What that command does is query every record in the form - regardless of
whether it's already found its search criteria - for EACH record it's
trying to delete. The errors are not as severe as they sound, but it
does take WAY more time than necessary. It should be using the API call
that contains a query (see the API manual for the exact name - something
like Application-Delete-Query). That runs through the form ONCE.

However, since you probably can't alter their install procedures, the
better course is to figure out what it's trying to do and do it before
it gets there; i.e. if it's trying to remove some rows from SYS:Action,
make sure that form is free of deletable records before it makes it's
call. That at least will make the call process less slowly.

Kevin, are you seeing a corresponding entry in the
Filter/Escalation logs? I think what's happening is that there's one or
the other that's deleting a bunch of entries from a form, and it's
getting hung up, like an Escalation that ties up a thread or a DB
timeout or something. If you can track down the form that's in the
delete command, maybe you could just do the delete manually and see if
that frees up the rest of the install.

Do you get to a point where you stop getting logs and
nothing at all is happening on either server. If you are still actively
getting logs, it is probably just busy doing something (and failing) and
not hung up. How long did you wait? It could take hours depending on

Thanks.

ARSList Awards: Software Categories

Well, okay.

We got one complete nomination for each of the two categories.

Best Third Party Utility - Freeware ARUtilities

Best Third Party Utility - Commercial Abydos Analyser

So, they receive an honourable mention.

Unless someone starts a huge thread,

maybe with an entertaining threat of a lawsuit, in the next two hours,

I think only one product being nominated (and unlike MVP, with only two
nominations

Per product the bare minimum) this indicates little interest in the software

[I know we have had the Awards in the past with a confirmation vote,
however,

I am trying to revise the Awards to truly reflect the areas of greatest

So we get to concentrate on the Big Two Awards, and I can come with more

If you re-run the install with Filter and Escalation logs on, then monitor

You may need the corresponding log file to figure out the error exactly:

Re: Loading Mappings failed: The import was not attempted- arimportcmd from the command line

2008-08-19 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi,

I just want to add that the you can get the load mapping failed error in
some other cases.

I have, for example, seen this when the password or login name was
incorrect... This may not apply to the version you are using.

Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://www.rrr.se

Products from RRR Scandinavia:
* RRR|License - Not enough Remedy licenses? Save money by optimizing.
* RRR|Log - Performance issues or elusive bugs? Analyze your Remedy logs.
* RRR|Translator - Manage and automate your language translations.
Find these products, and many free tools and utilities, at http://rrr.se.

Carey is right on -x flag.

The Load Mappings failed means one of 2 things: either the mapping file
wasn't found in the command line or there is something wrong in the
 mapping

 - The import data file mentioned in the mapping has to be accessible to
 the
command. Sometimes adding the -o parameter before the -d parameter helps
 to
indicate if this is the problem.
 - The mappings have to be correct or you will get this error.
 - I always make the -m parameter the last item on the command line as it
 is
 extremely picky

 Chris,

It may be a typo... but where is the -x flag?

 arimportcmd
  -u user_name
 [-p password]
  -x server_name
 [-w external_authentication_string]
 [-r rpc_number]
 [-a port_number]
 [-l log_file_path]
 [-e duplicate_field]
 [-n suppress_filters]
 [-t multi_match_option]
 [-o data_file_name]
 [-f destination_form_name]
 [-v force_override]

 [
 -M fully_qualified_mapping_file_name
 ]
 OR
 [
 -m mapping name
 -d Mapping directory
 ]

Did the log file have anything
 in it? )

OK, I'm going to attempt to use a 5.x version of arimportcmd to see if

 Wish me luck...

 Well, okay.

We got one complete nomination for each of the two categories.

Best Third Party Utility - Commercial Abydos Analyser

So, they receive an honourable mention.

Unless someone starts a huge thread,

maybe with an entertaining threat of a lawsuit, in the next two hours,

I think only one product being nominated (and unlike MVP, with only two

Re: ARS with SQL 2005 Database Mirroring setup

2008-08-19 Thread Kaiser Norm E CIV USAF 96 CS/SCCE
OK, this is somewhat complicated, so I'll do my best to break it down
step-by-step.

First, be aware that we are still running 6.3, not 7.x, so our Remedy licenses
are stored in a .lic file, not in the database. From what I know of licensing
in 7.x, I think this process would be much, much easier in 7.x than in 6.3.

OK, first some hurdles to be aware of:

- Remedy licenses are tied to the server's MAC address.
- No two machines can be on the network at the same time and have the same MAC
address.
- No two machines can be on the network at the same time and have the same IP
address.

That said, in the environment I'm describing, you have two Remedy/SQL servers.
Both of these servers are running BOTH Remedy and MS SQL. One server is your
primary and one is your standby. You ship transaction logs from your primary
to your standby.

On your standby you have two network cards. One primary card and one standby.
You configure the primary card to have its own unique MAC and its own IP
address. You configure the standby card to *spoof* the MAC address of the
network card of your primary address. You also hard code the primary server's
IP address into the standby NIC. You then *disable* the standby NIC.

Your standby server is an absolute clone of your primary server -- thus your
Remedy installation, configuration, cfg files, and lic file are 100% identical
with the exception that the database name in the ar.cfg file points to the
standby server rather than the primary server. The data in the database gets
updated through the log shipping process.

So in a normal, everything-is-OK, day-to-day situation, you have a primary
Remedy/SQL server and a backup Remedy/SQL server humming away. Except the
Remedy service on the backup server is disabled.

Now let's pretend the unthinkable happens -- your primary server's motherboard
is fried. You can immediately switch over to your warm standby, but this is a
manual process:

- Make sure the primary server is definitely OFF the network (which it would be
if the motherboard is fried)
- On the standby server, disable the primary NIC and enable the backup NIC
- Reboot the standby server
- Start the Remedy service

This is an effective process, but like I said, there's lots of manual stuff in
it; thus it's not a HOT solution...it's just warm. That said, I often wonder
to myself, What's the point of all this? If something catastrophic happens to
my primary server (like a fried motherboard), the faster solution is to just
pull the removable drives out of the primary and slide them into the standby.
Since the primary and standby are 100% identical hardware, the standby will
read the primary's hard disks and boot up just fine. The only thing left to do
would be spoof the primary's MAC address.

Thus, one server can fail but the
cluster will just continue humming along and your application is none the
 wiser.

 Clustering, to me, seems to be the best option for Remedy environments;
however, from my understanding it still requires special, expensive
hardware (i.e., dedicated fiber channel) to connect the disk drives.

In my current environment we employ transaction log shipping, but that's a
 warm failover, not hot.

I would love to come up with some sort of rating system both for
The recruiting firms and the consultants.

I know of one recruiting firm (Cubicegg) that  not only received

The funds from the end clients and didn't pay the consultants,

Granted I do enjoy getting my once a year threat of a lawsuit.

My favorite one being a recruiting firm in South Africa saying

I should ban a company in England from posting to the list based

On an order in South Africa. The threat went away when I asked them

What country they would sue me in. At the time the Server was in the US

And I am of course in Canada(at least some of the time).

So, in short, without a lot of checks and balances and a lot of protection
from aggravation,

I would have to vote no to that category.

Just for popularizing people who post job advertisements, may I suggest a
category for recruiters who post ads here regularly that consultants had a
pleasant experience with.. Meaning the job/project/engagement and its
benefits met a consultants expectations.. This would help us consultants and
those looking for new engagements some sort of a benchmark to filter posted

Through my past engagements I have had some very good experiences and
fortunately very few not so good experiences (just 1 that I can think of)

FWIW: My thoughts (WAGS) were:

1) There is a local firewall preventing the host from connecting to itself.
   OR
2) The supplied hostname is not resolvable from the server. (maybe not
in the arserver_install/conf/ar file?)
   OR
2) Your server is not using portmapper. (However, the port might be
the -t flag of 1050 below too. I am just not sure.)
You might try to set the env setting ARTCPPORT to the correct TCP
port before you run the installer. (That might help.)
   OR
3) Their should be a password value for the Demo user that the
script is using
/tmp/915356.tmp/RIK/solaris/rik appinfo -x remserver001-t 1050 -u
Demo -l /tmp/915356.tmp -n defaultRikLogFile -f
   OR
4) Your Demo user has been in some way crippled. (No fixed license,
changed password, deleted, etc...)

Just some ideas...

I would try to login from the command line with the Driver program and
see if you can do what the script is trying to do.
I note that I think there should be an ssp command in there if your
not using port mapper, but I do not see it in the driver script.
However, I also do not see the log (login) command either. :)

But maybe the patch will work... It just makes me very uncomfortable
to see any errors during an install process. It just seems... well...
wrong to me. ( At least a bug.. maybe a failed install that also
failed to tell me how it failed... it makes me wonder.)

This installer has a GUI, so the though the installer is running on the
ars box (solaris), through a X windows session, the display comes to my
PC. I'm using Xming on my PC.

The installer's GUI gets to my PC ok, and I answer all the prompts.
Before the installation gets too far, I get an alert popup saying:
Internal Error. Unable to build patch summary. Installation can not
 continue.

On clicking Ok, the installation bravely tries to continue, as if
unaware that there was any error.

After the screen that asks me to confirm my answers and clicking next,
it seems to do something for a min or two.
 Then it says:
An internal error has caused the installer to not complete
 successfully

Midtier Clustering

2008-08-19 Thread Kaiser Norm E CIV USAF 96 CS/SCCE
Hi everyone:

Is it possible to create a high availability Midtier cluster? That is, a
cluster of Midtier servers that behave as a virtual single server so
that if one server fails the other picks up the load without the end
users noticing?

Thanks,

Norm

Re: Midtier Clustering

2008-08-19 Thread Axton
For the most part it is possible. Since the remedy java api's do not
support serialization and/or due to the weird licensing arrangement of
mid-tier, sessions must be persistent behind a load balancer. This
means that all sessions to a given host will cease working in the
event of a node failure in the cluster. Users on the other nodes will
not notice an interruption.

I'm going to say that it's possible to do it with minimal interruption, but
I'm not sure about no interruption. If you configure multiple mid-tier
servers behind a load balancer, if one of them goes down then the load
balancer would re-point themwhich would force them to log back in
because their session is invalid on the other serverbut I did look into
Tomcat clustering that did session sharing, but didn't get far enough down
that road to actually test anything.

Didn't you get the option to change the drive at the time of installing the
clients? During the install of the user or the admin client the install program
prompts with two paths, the install path and the home directory.. Its the home

home which seems like is the citrix drive in your case..

My guess is probably that your laptops and desktops are being built from two

have been set on the client machines to enable alerts and also the flash
icon is set and also won't alert them,

Thanks !

I am not talking about a preference server.. I am talking about the
Alert tool preferences that can be set to either enable or disable a
pop-up.

My guess is probably that your laptops and desktops are being built from
two different images both of which have different sets of preferences
stored in their respective images. When you log into the Alert tool,
check the tool preferences..

Rick,

Did you check your preferences for Alert on your desktops? IF your OS on
your laptops and desktops have been installed from a standard image,
maybe your image for your laptops is different from that of desktops and
the preferences are set differently on these two images?

Re: ARDBC Configuration Issue

2008-08-19 Thread Joe DeSouza
JT,
Is AREA working if you use the same credentials to authenticate?
Try asking your AD admins to turn on a trace for the user that you are using to
authenticate for ARDBC.. It is very possible that you are using the wrong LDAP
URL to access the container you want to create a form against..

Subject: ARDBC Configuration Issue

**
Windows 2003
AR 7.1 p3

I’m trying to configure AREA and ARDBC to an Active Directory server. I can
browse the server when using ldapbrowser and the credentials I’ve been given.
However, when I configure the ARDBC in Remedy User and then try to create a new
vendor form in Remedy Administrator, Remedy Administrator hangs for about a
minute and then I get an empty vendor form creation box. If I remove the ARDBC
configuration, or just the server address, then creating a new vendor form
shows REMEDY.ARDBC.APPQUERY, REMEDY.ARDBC.FLASHBOARD.FORM and
REMEDY.ARDBC.SERVER.ADMINISTRATION immediately.

It appears to me that something is causing the LDAP plugin to hang and this
causes the entire plugin server to hang which causes other problems such as
slow logins and an inability to look at user licenses.

Is there any way to tell if this issue is related to the Active Directory or is
a BMC/Remedy issue?

I’ve tried limiting the page size to 1000, 100 and 10 to no avail. I’ve tried
setting the BaseDN to a container with only 6 objects, also to no avail. I’m
not really sure where to go next. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Yes I was talking of the options.. thank you for correcting me..

Another thing to check on is firewall settings..

IF your Remedy Server and or your clients are behind a firewall, you might need to set a windows environment variable NTTCPCLIENTPORT to the port that the alert mechanism is moving.. IFyou have no firewalls ignore the rest of this message..

You might want to check the docs to see if NTTCPCLIENTPORT is the name of the variable for Alert - it used to be for the Remedy notifier when the tools architecture was slightly different.. They may have a different variable for alert..

I'd suggest to look for a section that talks of setting your alert tool to work behind a firewall in the configuration guides..

Re: File Menu using mid-tier 7.1 /Weblogic 9.2

2008-08-19 Thread Joe DeSouza
Was it just a AR Server 6.3 upgrade to 7.1 Patch 3 or did you upgrade the mid
tier too?
Is this happenning on all character menu fields?
If it is happening only on one, is there any workflow on the selection of a
menu that may null the field under certain conditions that may be evaluating
true on the new version to fire that piece of workflow?

Atul

Re: Urgent-Adding table field in an AST Form

2008-08-19 Thread Joe DeSouza
I am not sure anyone responded to you on this, so I'll pick this one up. The
class manager is used only to create data type fields. Table fields or trim
fields are not data type fields.. It shouldn't wreck anything should you choose
to create one on your form.
Just watch out for what ID's you consume though and I'd suggest to stick to a
range of DB ID's for such trim or display fields that you will not use from the
class manager..

I am facing a problem in CMDB. I want to add a table in an AST form. I am sure
we cannot do it from class form. Can we use Administrator tool to do the same?
If yes will it impact anywhere in the CMDB.

Approval Processes

2008-08-19 Thread Steven Iocco

Hello ARSList. I am creating a close down approval process and using a status
of Completed as the beginning of the Status Flow. I am leaving status reason
blank however if someone sets a status reaon on completed on a change record,
the approval never kicks off. I would have assumed that leaving it blank would
apply the process for all completed changes? Does this mean that I need a
close down process for every Completed status reason?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

SMS2CMDB with CMDB 2.1

2008-08-19 Thread Janie
Hi all,

Wanted to get any feedback from anyone who has installed SMS2CMDB 1.6.2 on
ARS 7.1, AIE, CMDB 2.1, and ITSM (Asset) 703

To begin with, this would be the stock integration.

Mainly I am wondering if the ARS versions mentioned above will work for the
Integration?

Any feedback, tips, warnings are appreciated.

Thanks,

Janie
