OT: Remedy @ US Army in Stuttgart Germany?

Hi Folks ... !

Thats a bit off topic ... however, Im living in Germany and have been to
the army compound
in Stuttgart Germany for new year celebration (husband of my wife's sister
is stationed there).

Somehow we talked about work too, and the folks at the army there actually
use Remedy (and
seem to lve it :-). Am just wondering now if the army has their own
Remedy team, or if
they work with contractors? Anyone knows if they also do Remedy related
work in Germany,
or its all being done from the states?

Thanks ... just curious.

Re: Possibly spam: OT: Remedy @ US Army in Stuttgart Germany?

2009-01-16 Thread Meyer, Jennifer L
I can't speak for their specific base, but what's most likely going on is their
parent command has its own Remedy admin team in-house. That's the way the
commands I've worked under have run things. Depending on how integrated the
Army Remedy effort is, it could be located anywhere in the states.

To give you an example, Navy Medicine has a Remedy system which controls all
Navy Medicine help desks world-wide. That has absolutely nothing to do with
Naval Intelligence, Naval Operations, etc.

ARDBC File System Plugin for AR System updated for AR 7.1

2009-01-16 Thread Blade

Hello,

we are using the plugin "ARDDBC File System" and upgraded from ARS 6.3
to ARS 7.1 .

I do not find any compiled version of the plugin for Windows.

Does anybody use the plugin on the windows platform and already
recompiled it?

Here the link to the BMCDN:

http://developer.bmc.com/communities/docs/DOC-2091

Hope perhaps somebody can send us the plugin recompiled.

Thank you !

Cheers,

Accounting for Virtual Servers in the CMDB

2009-01-16 Thread SCOTT PHILBEN
Is anyone using the CMDB (2.1 patch 004) and Asset application (7.0.3 patch
008) to account for virtual servers? Does anyone have a white paper with some
best practices that I could steal? There seems to be classes that are related
to Virtual servers (System-->Virtual System for example) but how are they best
used? Standalone? Related to a Computer System?

If anyone is doing it or has information, please pass it along.

Thanks.

Re: ARDBC File System Plugin for AR System updated for AR 7.1

2009-01-16 Thread Carey Matthew Black
Vladimiro,

I have not reviewed that plugin specifically, but...

In v7.1 there is a new Java based plugin server. So if you can write
some Java you likely could implement your own version of this tool
from scratch.

I actually had this exact problem (was implemented in v6.3 but not in
v7.1) with another plug-in too.
( http://developer.bmc.com/communities/docs/DOC-992 ) However, I was
able to re-implement the functionality in less than a weekend with my
Java skills.

Maybe that idea would work for you too?

We were told during the call that there would be an announcement on the BMC

I wonder how different it is from the very initial release they gave away a
year ago called the Dev Studio. I liked the fact that it was much faster as
it didn't do a million searches when opening any workflow objects and did a

Re: Accounting for Virtual Servers in the CMDB

If you install the help files for CMDB, they include detailed information on
the data model, including the purpose of each class and attribute. This is
very helpful when trying to map CI types to existing classes.

Re: ARS 7.5 classes

2009-01-16 Thread Easter, David
AR System 7.5.00 classes are being developed and will be introduced as
they become available. My understanding is that the initial class would
be a "What's New" and available beginning some time in February. Admin
certifications and Developer oriented courses would come later in the
year.

ARS 7.1.00 Patch 006

2009-01-16 Thread strauss
I know everyone is excited about 7.5, but you'll forgive me if I don't run
right out and upgrade my production system to 7.5 just yet.

I am, however, seriously considering taking it from 7.1.00 Patch 002 to Patch
006. I have only had Patch 006 running for a week on development, with no
errors noted (in spite of subsequently adding Asset Management and re-running
ITSM 7 Patch 7 to catch it up, then running ITSM 7 Patch 009). I have a lot
more work documenting post-patch fixes that will be need for the application,
but I am wondering what problems (if any) other sites might have had with the
ARS 7.1 Patch 6 components???

Re: ARS 7.5?

2009-01-16 Thread Easter, David
Yes, AR System 7.5.00 just reached what we call "Web GA". The physical
GA (i.e. where printed manuals and DVD packaging will be available) will
occur later this month - hopefully no later than the 30th.

Because of internal processes, different deliverables of the release
come out at different times of the day (or days). So the EPD is up, but
the documentation section in Support Central has not yet been activated.
There is a link from EPD to the individual documentation, however. The
compatibility page update is also lagging a little. Everything should
be available through normal channels by end of day Monday if things
continue to go well.

Also note that the official marketing launch of AR System will coincide
with a larger launch of other BMC products scheduled for later this
Spring. Thus the marketing pages on www.bmc.com will most likely remain
updated for several weeks.

The easiest way for folks to review quickly what is new in the release
is to look at Appendix A in the "BMC Remedy Action Request System
7.5.00: Release Notes with Known Issues" document, which can be found
through this direct link:

16-Jan-2009 BMC Remedy Action Request System 7.5.00: Release
Notes with Known Issues PDF

Enjoy.

Gary,
you might be unsupported on both ends..
ars 6.3 is now unsupported,
ars 7.5 is based on open source -- and thus the Gov will not allow you to
use it as well.
(this might end up getting changed -- but for now)

Active link not refreshing

2009-01-16 Thread Ramey, Anne
I'm running ITSM 7.0 patch 7 with the task module/patch for incident (9002)
installed. I am trying to make a fix to the active link
INT:HPDTMS:INC:CreateNewTaskOpenTAS because it is not setting the assignee
groups (which is a problem for me because we are multi-tenant). The problem is
this, once I run this active link once, it seems cached forever in my user
tool. I have cleared by arcache, re-logged into the user tool, rebooted by
desktop and restarted the server in between changes to this active link with no
effect what-so-ever. It is always running the active link exactly as it did
the first time I ran it. For example, right now the active link is disabled
entirely according to Administrator, yet -even though I restarted by user tool-
my user tool is still running the active link.

Has anyone run into anything like this before? Any ideas?

Open Source in AR System (was: RE: ARS 7.5?)

2009-01-16 Thread Easter, David
> ars 7.5 is based on open source -- and thus the Gov will not allow you
to use it as well.

That's a confusing statement, since previous versions of AR System have
included open source technology as well, yet the Gov (and I assume you
mean US Government) continues to use it. AR System 7.5.00 has a similar
amount of open source as previous releases. However, even that being
the case, it is not "based on open source".

Open source technologies used are documented in the "Third Party
Supplementary Materials Files - 97065 [Not Required to Install this BMC
Product]
" download available from the EPD if one wishes to
review it. I have not yet heard of a situation where a government
institution could not use AR System due to its use of some off-the-shelf
and open source technologies. Typically, once the afore mentioned
document is reviewed, there are no further impediments. Perhaps there
have been individual interpretations that specific sites have made on
such, but the general statement you make is not true to the best of my
knowledge.

7.5.00: Release Notes with Known Issues" document, which can be found
through this direct link:

objects and did a search only when needed. I thought that was cool and

I'm sure David will respond as well...but it's a well known statement that
support is Current - 2...with 7.5 being in GA at this point -2 would be
7.01...so I believe that you are at this point no longer on a supported

Great response,
will read up on this. However the issue is not the opensource software
included inside the released application (via cots).
The issue from what I understand is the Eclipse, it is not allowed because
it is opensource software. So it Remedy Packaged it into their software and
certified that this version of Eclipse in our COTS application is ok, safe..
Then it is ok.
But I will look into this a little more.. thanks...

Yes, AR System 7.5.00 just reached what we call "Web GA". The physical GA

Because of internal processes, different deliverables of the release come

the marketing pages on www.bmc.com will most likely remain updated for
several weeks.

The easiest way for folks to review quickly what is new in the release is to
look at Appendix A in the "BMC Remedy Action Request System 7.5.00: Release
Notes with Known Issues" document, which can be found through this direct
link:

16-Jan-2009 BMC Remedy Action Request System 7.5.00: Release

Enjoy.

I wonder how different it is from the very initial release they gave away a
year ago called the Dev Studio. I liked the fact that it was much faster as
it didn't do a million searches when opening any workflow objects and did a
search only when needed. I thought that was cool and was great performance

be released today. More than likely it will be tonight as I am sure that BMC
doesn't want/need everyone downloading at the same time during business

Perhaps there
have been individual interpretations that specific sites have made on
such, but the general statement you make is not true to the best of my
knowledge.

While the Developer Studio is based on Eclipse, it is presented and
distributed as a BMC application and thus fully supported by BMC. The
customer does not have access to the open source for Developer Studio
itself. In addition, the customer does not install Eclipse and then a
BMC provided plug-in - it all comes together as one released
application. So I would expect that it falls under your "packaged
software" description.

Great response,
will read up on this. However the issue is not the opensource software
included inside the released application (via cots).
The issue from what I understand is the Eclipse, it is not allowed
because it is opensource software. So it Remedy Packaged it into their
software and certified that this version of Eclipse in our COTS
application is ok, safe.. Then it is ok.
But I will look into this a little more.. thanks...

The Developer Studio is not supported on non-Windows platforms in AR
System 7.5.00. While it has the potential in the future to be run on
non-Windows environments, such usage would not be supported in AR System
7.5.00.

This is documented on page 15. You may have skimmed by that sentence:

My understanding is that the release today of ITSM 7.5 is an English-only
release; you may want to wait for the full internationalized version, ITSM
7.5.1, which will be released later. You can contact your sales rep for more

7.5 beta tester thoughts

2009-01-16 Thread Jason Miller
Hi All,

Now that 7.5 is in GA do NDAs expire and can beta testers talk about what
their experiences have been with 7.5? The big question, how do you like
it? I just read what's new and it looks like there are some exciting new
features besides the new IDE. And what about the IDE? What are your
thought? We are working on setting up a VM to take a look for ourselves but
I would love some feed back from those who have been using it.

Oh yeah, and ITSM 7.5 too. In my current shop I don't see us going past
ITSM 6 but what are your thoughts on the new ITSM?

Re: Active link not refreshing

2009-01-16 Thread Lyle Taylor
Have you tried wiping out (physically deleting) the local cache for the user
tool? If you're using the standard configuration, it would be under
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AR System\home. Simply
delete all the subfolders in the home folder and then restart your User client.

Any ideas?

7 uses Java -- Java is open source -- you are screwed.

The logic of (if opensource - do not use it) -- does not make logical
sense.

For example.

I write software X -- I sell it to you - closed source.

Next week - I decide to open it --- it is now opensource -- do you
have to throw it away?

What I can see being a problem for the "gov" -- is the whole admin
certification process.

Which -- since the admin tool is "open" so to speak -- it would be
trivial to inject problematic code into the .gov world.

That - may be the significant problem.

I wonder how different it is from the very initial release they gave
away a year ago called the Dev Studio. I liked the fact that it was much
faster as it didn't do a million searches when opening any workflow
objects and did a search only when needed. I thought that was cool and
was great performance wise..

During the final call for the open beta it was announced that ARS 7.5
would be released today. More than likely it will be tonight as I am
sure that BMC doesn't want/need everyone downloading at the same time
during business hours. We were told during the call that there would be
an announcement on the BMC website (main site or support web, I'm not

ITSM 7.5 should also be available today.

Re: ARS 7.5?

2009-01-16 Thread Will Du Chene
John, that was good.. I laughed out loud here.

But you're right on track: government is dang skittish when it comes to open
source products. There seems to be this mindset that, so long as they buy
their products from a 'company' per se, that the world will turn, classical
music will play and daisies will sprout from the backsides of their users.

After all of these years, the only thing that I can track that mindset to is
that they want a security blanket. They want their warm fuzzies and their
favorite, nibbled-on-the-corner and been-through-the-washer-a-bazillion-times
blanket. They want to be able to have someone to call at 4am and cry to when
their application dies. The same is true of hiring time. They want to be able
to hire someone who already has managed a particular application, or suite of
applications.

We've all heard the 'total cost of ownership' and 'supportability' lectures,
right? This is the way that the industry wants it. Independent thought, and
God forbid, action, is almost heresy.

Is this the right approach? Well, I suppose it depends on your perspective.

To that end, any software application, be it vastly superior in terms of
design, will always face an up hill battle.

Just look at NetBSD, it's a perfect example. The OS is THE most ported
platform on the planet, is rock solid, and has a lineage that stems from long
before Winchunks was a glimmer in Gate's eye, yet - for all practical
purposes - remains unknown, except to those of us that have worked with it.
The same is true of FreeBSD, or OpenBSD.

How about OTRS (http://otrs.org) for a simple help desk? What about RT
(http://bestpractical.com/rt)? Both are stable, highly configurable (written
in Perl) applications yet unknown.

What about Zarafa (http://www.zarafa.com)? It's a drop in Exchange
replacement that has been around for a bit, albeit not as long as some
others. The product sits on top of a MySQL database, and can have something
like postfix or sendmail for an mta in front of it so all of the milters or
spam filtering can remain. The best part - it costs less than HALF of what
Exchange does to operate - and it's FREE in a community edition. It's even
got it's own webmail interface that looks like an Outlook client. Yet, in
spite of it all, the user community remains small.

Alternatives has never really been very useful in the software industry, when
point and click, buy-off-the-shelf will do. Call me jaded, if you wish, but
when I am talking to someone that is considering adding some sort of help
desk, mail server, or whatnot, my first recommendation is almost NEVER
anything that is licensed, packaged, or shrink-wrapped, unless there is some
sort of ill-conceived standard which mandates it, and even then, I usually
ask about exceptions.

To that end, I had an interesting conversation last week with a CIO who
wanted to know more about help desk software that he could use to streamline
his request process and clean-up his department. By the time it was all over
and done, he was staring at RT with an evil grin, considering a number of
customizations, and almost overjoyed at the fact that he could put it on top
of a free database to save on licensing.

Just because something is free does not mean that it is inferior. The
fundamental question surrounding sofrtware should be whether or not it will
do the job. The number of options that it has don't mean jack if you can't
make something work.

Back when I was managing a Remedy system - we had this issue and lots
of others.

(all were solvable)

The best thing we did was "switch systems monthly" -- meaning every
month we would switch the "prod box" -- from boxa to boxb.

Eventually we had it down quite well. It uncovered lots of things that
we would have never figured out - unless it was real.

The #1 hardest thing to solve was this:

(Updating DNS records -- and the built in caches that all the clients
had).

Meaning -- we would migrate from boxa to boxb -- which was something
like

192.168.1.50 -- to 192.168.2.20

All the clients knew the machine as boxz -- and the DNS would alias
that to boxa -- and then clients would have boxz IP address as
192.168.1.50.

When we would switch from boxa to boxb -- we could update the DNS
quickly -- but the clients all held the old address for (an hour )
-- I don't remember (12 years ago now).

At the time -- you did not have the option of saying this IP address
was not cacheable (or had a small cache) -- so we had to create a new
DNS domain and register boxa, boxb, boxz all in the new domain. Then
that domain would have something like a 15 second cache window.

(blah blah blah)

Anyways -- that is the type of thing you have a hard time predicting.
(And many other issues too)

If I was actually adminning (made that word up) -- I would feel much
more comfortable if I switched every once in awhile.

The questions about upgrading to ARS 7.1 lately have gotten me
thinking about something.

For our disaster recovery solution, we have a failover server sitting
in another city, with a different server name, etc. We use log
shipping in SQL Server 2005 to keep the two databases synchronized.
In the event of an emergency, we have the DBAs mark the normal
production database as read only, and we open up the disaster recover
database, and we proceed from there.

Since ARS 7.1 stores the license keys in the database, how would I
prevent this from being overwritten? How would I keep my DR copies of
the licenses on the server if the database is overwritten constantly?
Or is this not an issue in 7.1 since it sounds like you can
temporarily create licenses on the fly anyway?

Thanks,

I've had success with vcs on solaris working around these types of issues.
