Re: Remedy user tool is crashing

2009-02-24 Thread Barber, David
Hi Sachin,

What sort of error is being received on that PC? There is a variety of errors
that can be raised, and the most regular (that I've experienced) is a Visual
C++ error - the only resolution I've found so far is to try to re-install the
Remedy client.

There's also a chance that the user in question is on a prior release of the
client - running a 5.1.2 client against 6.3 can give unpredictable results

Regards

Dave

Hi All,

I am running a OOTB report from my machine. The report is running fine
without causing any problems. But the same report is run by another user from
his machine. When that user runs this report, his Remedy user tool crashes.

What may the cause of this problem?

I am using BMC Remedy Version 6.3.

Regards,
Sachin

Cannot see some fields from Active Directory

2009-02-24 Thread vinitPatil
Hello All,

I've integrated Remedy with AD. But it seems that Vendor form is not showing
all the fields from AD.
As I can see we have a field called Site/Location in Active Directory but
Vendor form doesn't show this field.
Does anyone know the workaround for this?

Thanks & Regards,

Re: Cannot see some fields from Active Directory

2009-02-24 Thread Joe DeSouza
Vinit,

Right click on the Vendor form when opened from the Admin tool, and the topmost
option 'Fields from... ' will display the list of fields when selected.

Some of the fields you see here will be in abbreiviations such as uid for User
ID OR o for Organization, etc.. So you will need to know what you are looking
for.

Hope this helps..

Cheers

Joe

Re: Remedy Developer, Colorado Springs

2009-02-24 Thread Pierson, Shawn
The problem is that when applying to these jobs, you are screened by an HR
person that doesn't know the technology, but reads it and expects you to have
three years or more of ARS 7 experience, not general Remedy experience. In
those cases, the HR person will sometimes not believe you are telling the
truth, and so the position goes unfilled for months while the hiring manager
gets frustrated that no Remedy people seem to be out there, or that they aren't
offering enough money.

On the flip side, I've worked places where when I wanted to hire someone, I was
given resumes of administrative assistants who only have MS Office experience
and nothing to do with Remedy, or I'm given lots of resumes of people who have
worked in call centers that used Remedy. I personally prefer this over the
first scenario, but it does get a little annoying to sort through the resumes
to find the few good ones.

It's not tax free, but you can qualify for the foreign tax credit. If you spend
less than 30 days in the US for 1 year. Then you can get an $87,600 tax

Cant Submit New Record Through View Form

2009-02-24 Thread J Kovalcik

Listers,

I am trying to submit a new record through a view form on an 6.3
server MSSQL 2000 and it is not getting the next request id.  It's trying to
submit it with the starting id of 1 and it's already there.  No workflow
involved - just a simple save from the view form.   When I duplicate it on my
ARS 7.0 server MSSQL 2005, it works perfect.  Any Ideas ?

Thanks in advance !

Remedy ODBC Drivers and 7.1

2009-02-24 Thread ccrashh
Has anyone else seen this issue? When trying to run an embedded
Crystal Report, we got the error:

"An error occurred while generating the Crystal Report: 0x80047e48 -
Logon Failed (ARERR 1904)"

What we discovered is that the AR System ODBC driver existed as a Data
Source but did not have a server name (that is, if you go to Windows
Start/Administrative Tools/Data Sources (ODBC), there should be a line
for the AR System ODBC driver...if not, you can add it). Now, if
there is no AR System ODBC driver listed as a User Data Source, you
can still run the report via a 6.3 User Tool. The User Data Source is
created and set properly (i.e. with a server name). However, if you
run the report from a 7.1 User tool, it does NOT create the data
source.

As well, on SOME machines, even if the data source is there but there
is no Server Name, you get the error above - on other machines, as
long as the Data Source exists, the report runs even if there is no
Server Name. We can't figure out why, and what is happening.

BMC says that this is "as designed" - that is, each Client Workstation
has to manually set the AR System ODBC driver. Sigh.

I have a Recon job which has a single compare activity with a Qualification

When I run this recon job I get the following error:

Indeed this is a ComputerSystem attribute and is not found in BaseElement.
The qualification for the workflow element specifies this attribute and the

Re: Remedy Developer, Colorado Springs

2009-02-24 Thread LJ Longwing
It's the same problem across all industries. I have over 10 years
experience with Remedy, does that make me more qualified than someone with
5? Or 3?...it depends on what sort of work I have done in my 10 years, and
they in theirs as well as what sort of work they are requiring to be done at
the position. This is the same type of problem that EVERY industry
experiences...just kuz you've worked on cars for 35 years doesn't mean you
are qualified to work on a hybrid...I dunno.

The problem is that when applying to these jobs, you are screened by an HR
person that doesn't know the technology, but reads it and expects you to
have three years or more of ARS 7 experience, not general Remedy experience.
In those cases, the HR person will sometimes not believe you are telling the
truth, and so the position goes unfilled for months while the hiring manager
gets frustrated that no Remedy people seem to be out there, or that they
aren't offering enough money.

On the flip side, I've worked places where when I wanted to hire someone, I
was given resumes of administrative assistants who only have MS Office
experience and nothing to do with Remedy, or I'm given lots of resumes of
people who have worked in call centers that used Remedy. I personally
prefer this over the first scenario, but it does get a little annoying to
sort through the resumes to find the few good ones.

At least they're not asking for 3 years of 7.5 experience yet. Although
we're probably not more than a couple months away from seeing that
requirement. Maybe they're just optimistically hoping to get one of the
engineers that worked on building v7.

MidTier 7.1 Patch 5, JBoss and IIS

2009-02-24 Thread Marty.Thorin
Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen:
We have installed our Remedy 7.1.0 Patch 5 MidTier on a 2003
Windows server. We did the default install except for a path change:
from c:\program files\ to e:\programs\. (The rest of the path is the
same.)

The MidTier works great as long as we use JBoss directly at port 8080.
When we drop the 8080 it switches to IIS. It shows the configuration or
normal login screen then fails on login. I am sure the problem is in
the IIS-JBoss connector. We have instructions for Tomcat and IIS and
these worked for ARS 6.3 patch 20. Does anyone have instructions on how
to set up JBoss and IIS?

Thank you,
Thorin

Other, probably irrelevant, information. Everything is ARS 7.1.0 Patch
5. The server is running on a different Intel box with Redhat.

In a very strict sense, it depends.. What if there was an independent
consultant working on 4 different projects over those years all involving
version 7 :-) That would technically give him experience varied enough to count
as 2 x 4 = 8 years of experience on paper.. although chronologically that would
seem impossible..

We won't blast you, but that rate is like way under market rate even if they
paid 100% on all expenses like relocation or travel and per Diem or meals for a
place like West Palm Beach.. That rate just doesn't seem real if they are
genuinely looking for an experienced individual considering they need a 'lead'
architect.

Has anyone else seen this issue? When trying to run an embedded Crystal
Report, we got the error:

"An error occurred while generating the Crystal Report: 0x80047e48 -
Logon Failed (ARERR 1904)"

What we discovered is that the AR System ODBC driver existed as a Data
Source but did not have a server name (that is, if you go to Windows
Start/Administrative Tools/Data Sources (ODBC), there should be a line
for the AR System ODBC driver...if not, you can add it). Now, if there
is no AR System ODBC driver listed as a User Data Source, you can still
run the report via a 6.3 User Tool. The User Data Source is created and
set properly (i.e. with a server name). However, if you run the report
from a 7.1 User tool, it does NOT create the data source.

As well, on SOME machines, even if the data source is there but there is
no Server Name, you get the error above - on other machines, as long as
the Data Source exists, the report runs even if there is no Server Name.
We can't figure out why, and what is happening.

BMC says that this is "as designed" - that is, each Client Workstation
has to manually set the AR System ODBC driver. Sigh.

While AR is supposed to support it, in my experience it is best to shut down
everything but the primary server, make your changes, and then bring everything
back up again. Things just go more smoothly that way.

I can see it happening if the secondary servers cannot allocate memory for
the re-cache. Is your primary server in development cache mode and the
secondary servers aren't?

You would think if one malloc'd then they all would -- unless the memory
or ARS configuration differs...

Since a modification to the primary server triggers a server recache to the
other servers in the group, I would look at the resources on the other
servers. Here are a few questions that I have:

. How many servers are in the group?

. What is the memory configuration on these servers?

. What is the disk space configuration on these servers?

. What cache mode are the servers in?

. Do all of them crash with the malloc error? Or, just specific
ones?

. Is this a new Server Group configuration? Or, did it work before,
but now does not?

Turning on the server group logs may offer some clues as well.

7.5 on Linux 64-bit?

2009-02-24 Thread Lyle Taylor
Hi all,

So, we're getting ready to install AR 7.5 on Linux based on the understanding I
had gotten from other posts on the list stating that it was 64-bit. I'm
starting to question that understanding based on what I'm readying in the
installation guide. First, the installation guide indicates that only the UNIX
servers are 64-bit (and they don't group Linux with UNIX - it's considered
separately). Then on page 50 under "Installing AR System 64-bit servers", it
says the following:

On Linux and Windows, AR System is compiled on 32-bit platforms with
compatible 32-bit database connectivity libraries. Consult your operating system
and database vendors for information about compatibility support for 32-bit
clients on 64-bit operating systems and how those 32-bit clients communicate to
a
local or remote 64-bit database.

I saw the Linux: Expected 64-bit roadmap and interoperability with AR System
PDF document that David Easter sent a link to, but that was from July 08, so I
don't know if it still reflects reality.

Can anyone confirm that the Linux AR Server (arserverd) actually is a 64-bit
binary, or is it a 32-bit binary but BMC is only supporting it on 64-bit Linux
servers for some reason?

Thanks,

Server Name references - export/import ARSystem DB - ITSM 7

2009-02-24 Thread Mary Ann
We have been struggling with the list of server name references that
need to be changed when exporting/importing an ARSystem DB from one
server to another server.

Last week we found that one of the imbedded server references has been
causing Apache on our Mid-Tier server to crash because we had a server
reference for the CI Viewer to the original server.

Our versions installed:
ARS 7.0.01/Patch 7
CMDB 2.0.1/Patch 3
ITSM IM/PM/AM/Change 7.0.02/Patch 5
SLM 7.0.03/No Patch
RKM 7.2/Patch 1
SQL Server 2005/SP2

I looked at past postings on this list and have been using that list to
update server references up to now. Based on our crashes I looked for
and found a SQL Server procedure on the internet to search for text (old
server references) in columns in tables.

These are the server references that we will NOW update when we move the

ARSystem database from one server to another server:

FORM DATA:
- KMS:Adminstration_Integration - Server Name
- SHARE:Application_Properties - help file paths
- SYS:Attachments - survey path
- Report - Server field
- CAI:Application Registry - Server field
- BMC.CORE:CONFIG:BMC_FederatedInterface - ARServerName field [this was
the one causing the MidTier apache crash]
- AR System Searches - Server field
- CAI:EventParams - FromServer field
- CAI:Events - SourceServer, TargetServer fields
- SLM:ConfigDataSource - SLMConfDSServerName field - hidden in GUI [have

not changed this yet due to possibly having to rebuild all service
targets
connected to this data source, waiting for a response from BMC Support]
- SRM:AppInstanceBridge - AppInstanceServer field

WORKFLOW:
- Active Link: CHG:CCMCalendar:PrintActionWUT - Action 1 path

I asked BMC Support to confirm this list and they said "we currently do
not have a doc that contains this information, as migrating the database

is not a supported process. R&D is developing a document that will
define
how this should be done and once this document is published, we will
begin
supporting a DB migration like the one you describe. Unfortunately,
there
is currently no ETA on this document." The good news is that they are
working on this document and hopefully we will see one soon, so I will
feel more comfortable that we have caught everything.

I hope this list helps others who have been struggling with this.

Thanks.

Mary Ann

"Installing AR System 64-bit servers", it says the following:

On Linux and Windows, AR System is compiled on 32-bit platforms with

compatible 32-bit database connectivity libraries. Consult your
operating system

and database vendors for information about compatibility support for
32-bit

clients on 64-bit operating systems and how those 32-bit clients
communicate to a

local or remote 64-bit database.

I saw the Linux: Expected 64-bit roadmap and interoperability with AR
System PDF document that David Easter sent a link to, but that was from
July 08, so I don't know if it still reflects reality.

Can anyone confirm that the Linux AR Server (arserverd) actually is a
64-bit binary, or is it a 32-bit binary but BMC is only supporting it on
64-bit Linux servers for some reason?

Thanks,

Lyle Taylor

Re: 7.5 on Linux 64-bit?

2009-02-24 Thread Lyle Taylor
Thanks, David.

Here's another question. The Compatibility Matrix says this about Full Text
Search:

Known Issues for Full Text Search Supported Configurations
1. Full Text Search requires a 32-bit database client to be present to operate
fully. Please see the BMC
Remedy AR System 7.5.00 Release Notes known issue section for more information.

I tried looking at the release notes for more information but can't find a
known issues section or anything that speaks about FTS. Is this also a
documentation bug, or do we indeed need both a 32-bit and a 64-bit Oracle
client on the server in order to run FTS with the 64-bit AR Server? If we do
need that, are there any special considerations that need to be taken into
account in order for the 32-bit and 64-bit Oracle clients to play nicely
together? For example, does anything special need to happen with the
ORACLE_HOME, PATH or LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variables in order for both
processes to operate correctly?

Thanks again,
Lyle

It is a 64-bit binary. The documentation on that page is in error.

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen:
We have installed our Remedy 7.1.0 Patch 5 MidTier on a 2003 Windows
server.  We did the default install except for a path change: from c:\program
files\ to e:\programs\.  (The rest of the path is the same.)
The MidTier works great as long as we use JBoss directly at port 8080.  When we
drop the 8080 it switches to IIS.  It shows the configuration or normal login
screen then fails on login.  I am sure the problem is in the IIS-JBoss
connector.  We have instructions for Tomcat and IIS and these worked for ARS
6.3 patch 20.  Does anyone have instructions on how to set up JBoss and IIS?
Thank you,
Thorin
Other, probably irrelevant, information.  Everything is ARS 7.1.0 Patch 5.  The
server is running on a different Intel box with Redhat.

That sort of beats the whole purpose of the whole concept of having server
groups though. When working like it should, the secondary servers 'do not
know' about the def changes that have occured due to changes made from the
primary server, until the new cache on the primary server has been recreated,
and the primary server then signals the secondary servers that there has been a

Subject: Server Name references - export/import ARSystem DB - ITSM 7

We have been struggling with the list of server name references that need to be
changed when exporting/importing an ARSystem DB from one server to another
server.

Last week we found that one of the imbedded server references has been causing
Apache on our Mid-Tier server to crash because we had a server reference for
the CI Viewer to the original server.

Our versions installed:
ARS 7.0.01/Patch 7
CMDB 2.0.1/Patch 3
ITSM IM/PM/AM/Change 7.0.02/Patch 5
SLM 7.0.03/No Patch
RKM 7.2/Patch 1
SQL Server 2005/SP2

I looked at past postings on this list and have been using that list to update
server references up to now.  Based on our crashes I looked for and found a SQL
Server procedure on the internet to search for text (old server references) in
columns in tables.

These are the server references that we will NOW update when we move the

ARSystem database from one server to another server:

FORM DATA:
- KMS:Adminstration_Integration - Server Name
- SHARE:Application_Properties - help file paths
- SYS:Attachments - survey path
- Report - Server field
- CAI:Application Registry - Server field
- BMC.CORE:CONFIG:BMC_FederatedInterface - ARServerName field [this was the one
causing the MidTier apache crash]
- AR System Searches - Server field
- CAI:EventParams - FromServer field
- CAI:Events - SourceServer, TargetServer fields
- SLM:ConfigDataSource - SLMConfDSServerName field - hidden in GUI [have not
changed this yet due to possibly having to rebuild all service
targets connected to this data source, waiting for a response from BMC Support]
- SRM:AppInstanceBridge - AppInstanceServer field

WORKFLOW:
- Active Link: CHG:CCMCalendar:PrintActionWUT - Action 1 path

I asked BMC Support to confirm this list and they said "we currently do not
have a doc that contains this information, as migrating the database is not a
supported process. R&D is developing a document that will define  how this
should be done and once this document is published, we will begin supporting a
DB migration like the one you describe. Unfortunately, there is currently no
ETA on this document." The good news is that they are working on this document
and hopefully we will see one soon, so I will feel more comfortable that we
have caught everything.

I hope this list helps others who have been struggling with this.

Thanks.

Mary Ann

Re: ARS 7.1 server group issue

2009-02-24 Thread Lyle Taylor
I see server groups as being more useful for load balancing and redundancy.
While you can indeed have users on the other systems while you perform the
updates, the other servers become nearly unusable as the cache updates,
especially for anything other than very minor changes. I've simply had less
issues if I simply bring down the other servers during the changes and then
bring them back up again after. In my experience, that actually provides a
better user experience, because knowing that it's down for a short time is
easier to deal with than extremely slow performance during a cache update.

That documentation is correct. FTS requires a 32-bit client. This is a
known limitation of the search engine used for FTS.

Here's another question. The Compatibility Matrix says this about Full
Text Search:

Known Issues for Full Text Search Supported Configurations

1. Full Text Search requires a 32-bit database client to be present to
operate fully. Please see the BMC

Remedy AR System 7.5.00 Release Notes known issue section for more
information.

I tried looking at the release notes for more information but can't find
a known issues section or anything that speaks about FTS. Is this also
a documentation bug, or do we indeed need both a 32-bit and a 64-bit
Oracle client on the server in order to run FTS with the 64-bit AR
Server? If we do need that, are there any special considerations that
need to be taken into account in order for the 32-bit and 64-bit Oracle
clients to play nicely together? For example, does anything special
need to happen with the ORACLE_HOME, PATH or LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment
variables in order for both processes to operate correctly?

Thanks again,

Lyle

Hi all,

So, we're getting ready to install AR 7.5 on Linux based on the
understanding I had gotten from other posts on the list stating that it
was 64-bit. I'm starting to question that understanding based on what
I'm readying in the installation guide. First, the installation guide
indicates that only the UNIX servers are 64-bit (and they don't group
Linux with UNIX - it's considered separately). Then on page 50 under
"Installing AR System 64-bit servers", it says the following:

Thanks,

Lyle Taylor

While you can indeed have users on the other systems while you perform the
updates, the other servers become nearly unusable as the cache updates,
especially for anything other than very minor changes.  I’ve simply had less
issues if I simply bring down the other servers during the changes and then
bring them back up again after.  In my experience, that actually provides a
better user experience, because knowing that it’s down for a short time is
easier to deal with than extremely slow performance during a cache update.

It's been a couple of years since I attempted to add something to the Service

ended up adding a field to the SR and then pushing that field to the incident

completely.  It is possible to implement this workaround because an incident
number does get referenced in the SR during incident creation, and you can
backtrack to the field you want to push using the entry ID. And as you say, BMC
is not going to help you do it any more elegantly.

Re: ARS 7.1 server group issue

2009-02-24 Thread Joe DeSouza
Its a known issue where ARS on Windows connected to a Remote Oracle database,
takes forever to recache and that it takes forever to restart if the services
have been stopped and is restarted. This is because of the way that data is
read in chunks of 100 rows. It is as designed and Remedy has nothing to do with
the design as its more how the Oracle client communicates to remote oracle
databases when the client is on Windows..

I didn't experience the kinds of problems you are talking about on UNIX ARS
Servers connected to remote Oracle databases.

So I guessed your configurations by the symptoms you described. Unfortunately
you got to live with it unless you decide to move to UNIX.

I see server groups as being more useful for load balancing and redundancy.
While you can indeed have users on the other systems while you perform the
updates, the other servers become nearly unusable as the cache updates,
especially for anything other than very minor changes.  I’ve simply had less
issues if I simply bring down the other servers during the changes and then
bring them back up again after.  In my experience, that actually provides a
better user experience, because knowing that it’s down for a short time is
easier to deal with than extremely slow performance during a cache update.

That sort of beats the whole purpose of the whole concept of having server
groups though. When working like it should, the secondary servers 'do not
know' about the def changes that have occured due to changes made from the
primary server, until the new cache on the primary server has been recreated,
and the primary server then signals the secondary servers that there has been a
change...

When properly setup it does work as designed.

Anthony, are all your servers in the server group of the same configuration,
and running the same applications? What is the physical memory on the servers?

Re: Selection Field Manipulation?

2009-02-24 Thread Charu Upadhyay

Hi Mark,

Thought three will work for you.

Create four separate radio buttons that will help you in enabling and
hiding options as per user profile and create one hidden radio button
field that will have all four options. Then write an active link on
desired action like submit 0r modify that will push the user desired
value to your hidden box.

The above option is good to use if you are using a form as an user
interface and keeping values into a seprate table but in case you are
implementing the same on a regular form then you may try to push the
vale in a character field since it may further be required for reporting
purpose.

Also,
You can use the search menu where values can be changed dynamically
using active links.

Mark,

Based upon what you are describing, I think you might be able to get
away with using 4 individual Check Box fields. You can show and hide
them based upon whatever criteria you desire and the look and feel is
similar to that of the Radio Button so you should have no trouble with
the customer. You would just need to ensure they select only the
correct number of boxes by using workflow.

Hope this helps.

Hello All,

Customer wants a dynamic radio button list. I am not sure this is
possible, but hope someone may know how to make it so.

Thought 1:
Manipulate a Selection Type Field (radio button) at runtime to show/hide
attribute values dynamically.

For example, I have a selection field with 4 values: A, B, C, D

When the user logs on, I want to check their group memberships, or
permissions, and based on this, show/hide certain values within the
list.

Problem is, I don't know how to dynamically manipulate a selection type
field.

Thought 2:

Do with a drop down menu, but cannot figure out how to make it a radio
button type selection.

Thought 3:
Build single value radio buttons, loop through them with code to
hide/show accordingly, then build workflow to manage user selections.

This I can do, but seems like a ton of code, and cumbersome to maintain.
Probably not worth the effort, if I could convince the customer of that.

If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mark

Here is the answer for your questions;

* How many servers are in the group?

* What is the memory configuration on these servers?

-4GB, 1.5 GB free when arserver running.

* What is the disk space configuration on these servers?

-Enough disk space

* What cache mode are the servers in?

-Primary has 'Development', all other production.

* Do all of them crash with the malloc error? Or, just specific

-All

* Is this a new Server Group configuration? Or, did it work

Recaching happens when groups are added in the group form.

Haven't checked with User entries.

Lyle,

That's good idea. We are not sure what else would trigger the re-cache.
We have not tested what would happen when Users/Groups are added.

While AR is supposed to support it, in my experience it is best to shut
down everything but the primary server, make your changes, and then
bring everything back up again. Things just go more smoothly that way.

I can see it happening if the secondary servers cannot allocate memory
for the re-cache. Is your primary server in development cache mode and
the secondary servers aren't?

You would think if one malloc'd then they all would -- unless the memory
or ARS configuration differs...

Re: Cannot see some fields from Active Directory

2009-02-24 Thread vinitPatil
Hello,

As per your instructions I searched Active Directory fields list and I found
that the field name is "physicalDeliveryOfficeName".
With this exact name I've created new field but still it is not showing any
value although values are present in AD. Also when I try to search records
using this field it gives me following error:

"The LDAP operation has failed : Bad search filter (LDAPERR 87) (ARERR
3377)"

What's wrong here?

Thanks & Regards,
Vinit

Re: ARS 7.1 server group issue

2009-02-24 Thread Anthony K R
Joe,

The chunk setting should not cause malloc error. There is no timeout issue
either.

Today I saw memory consumption report when the recache triggered on secondary
servers. It is crossing 2GB before the malloc error, a memory limitation on OS
or arserver process?

Regards,

Anthony

**

Joe

Your AR Servers are probably on windows and connect to Oracle setup as a Remote
database?

I see server groups as being more useful for load balancing and redundancy.
While you can indeed have users on the other systems while you perform the
updates, the other servers become nearly unusable as the cache updates,
especially for anything other than very minor changes. I’ve simply had less
issues if I simply bring down the other servers during the changes and then
bring them back up again after. In my experience, that actually provides a
better user experience, because knowing that it’s down for a short time is
easier to deal with than extremely slow performance during a cache update.

Re: Session Timeout Setting

Hi Andrew,

Did you tried the same by setting the time out session from user preference
form for a particular user? This will override the setting on config tool
for that user. Please try and check whether the results are same or
different.

Aditya
