Re: Upgrade AR System from 7.0 to 7.5
Miguel We have upgraded our training system from 6.3 to 7.5 and got there in the end! I just sent a long reply to Kathy but it bounced so I'll keep this one short in case it doesn't work either. We had a lot of different issues upgrading and were on the phone to our support partners a LOT. We are on Solaris. I'd recommend looking at the specific error messages and the files that are created (arsystem_install_log.txt, ARServer-RIKPostUpgrade.log etc). I had to delete our user preference and admin preference forms before it would install cleanly. If you use archiving, there is a known error and a workaround to manually amend the column archiveFromForm in the table schema_archive. I had to manually amend the behavior and permission columns in FILTER_NOTIFY, changing the value from 0 to NULL before the upgrade and changing it back afterwards. The fact is that this kind of migration is supported by the installer (confirmed in the install guide). Do you know any known issues or any tips about it? Regards, Miguel 2009/9/8 strauss stra...@unt.edu ** Make darn sure that you have planned for recovery (back up db before each step, and make copies of all file directories before beginning), and have tested recovery procedures (restore db from backup, and deleting or renaming file folders for applications left behind by any failed install) for each step of the upgrade, ESPECIALLY for the AtriumCore installer which I have only seen succeed once in our environment with the minimum number of features. Some of the app installers had to be run a second time to clear all errors; not all of them will run more than once against the same file structure. I am waiting for the 7.5.00.003 patches to come out before I try any of this again. Known problems with AIE, if you have it installed, are that it must be patched to at least 7.1.00.004 before the upgrade, and if it fails it will delete not only the instance that you are upgrading but any other instances that are installed on the same server in the default directory. I don't know what the prerequisites are if you are coming in from 7.0 instead of 7.1, but I would expect there to be some. If you have customized ANY forms or workflow, rehearse and script the restoration of those customizations as it is a good bet that the various 7.5 upgrade installers will overwrite them. Some, like searching for customers in ITSM 7.0, have been _extensively_ rewritten and that will break any customizations that you have made to the module. If you are just using ARS, not ITSM, the password management code changed a lot from 7.0 to 7.1 and again to 7.5. Suggestion: if you have any flashboards that are actively storing History, edit them to have a current start date and an expiration period, and still watch out for an explosion of data in the FB:History table. After upgrading from 7.1 to 7.5, and at the end of one month, our FB:History form suddenly gained 41 million records in two days. My last testing was in July with all patch 002 distributions on Windows x64 platforms, so your experience will be different but some of the pitfalls will be the same. Re: Upgrade AR System from 7.0 to 7.5
Well I'm just in the process of upgrading from 6.3 t Hello Kathy Well I'm just in the process of upgrading from 6.3 to 7.5 and so far its been more painful than expected. This is on Solaris 10, Oracle 10g, with windows mid-tier. Issues: - 7.5 user tool was very slow loading large forms (particularly if they had table fields on) - this is resolved if you use patch 2 of the user tool - Dev Studio is unwieldy. It may just take some getting used to, but until I have lots of time on my hands I'm going to continue doing development on the 7.1 admin tool. Basic things have become much harder, e.g. adding help text takes several extra clicks, and you can no longer copy and paste the name of the active link you're working on, say for example if you are documenting your workflow. I'd be interested to hear other people's opinion of the dev studio. It could just be that I need to spend some time getting to grips with it and then I'll never look back. - We also got some weird errors to do with permissions that we didn't get to the bottom of.. if I copy an existing active link it seems to think it has public permission 6 times over and won't let me save the active link till I remove the public permissions, save it, then add them back in again. - Problem with using string replacements to find and replace carriage returns. Sounds like this may be a known issue - as far as I can tell, string replacement of carriage returns will simply not work. If there is a workaround I'd be happy to hear about it! - Issues displaying on mid-tier. If you have a large field which displays the first 3 lines on-screen and then you click the expand button to view the full details, the third line of the expand box shows the top half of the text missing. This corrects itself if the user clicks on it or selects all the text, but that's not something we'd want to ask our users to do so are hoping there is a way around this. I think its caused by the nice sliding effect that has been built into mid-tier. - issues with table-fields. In 6.3 you could create a table field and add dummy columns to it, i.e. just selecting fields from the current form as columns (i.e the ones that are labelled as field type display). I used this quite a lot for temporarily storing a variable during a table-walk. Workflow which was tried and tested on 6.3 just stopped working on 7.5 until I amended it so that it was using a data column instead, i.e. a field which was selected from the underlying form (even though it was only used for temporary on-screen calculations). It doesn't affect all columns, and may only be a problem when the column contains a date. I haven't had time yet to fully investigate when it does and doesn't work. - date issues where active links used UK dates but filters used US dates. Solution to this was to change the arsystem start-up script to contain LANG=en_GB (even though this wasn't necessary in 6.3) - thanks to Mark Walters for pointing us in the right direction on this one. Once we knew what the issue was it was easy fixed. - mid-tier display is different. Text and boxes which previously had a background the same as the colour of the form now have a white background (but when viewed on the user tool, is the same as ever) Fixed this by changing the display mode from opaque to transparent (this fixes it for mid-tier and has no unwanted side-effects on the display of the same form on the user tool). Also needed to carry out quite a few manual changes before the install routine would work, but that may be to do with upgrading from 6.3 and with a bit of luck you won't get that if you've gone via 7.0. Re: Upgrade AR System from 7.0 to 7.5
Ok, thank you very much for the answer, Isabel. Now, I'm trying to do the upgrade in two steps: - First, upgrade from 6.3 to 7.1 (Succeded) - Second, upgrade from 7.1 to 7.5 I didn't try the second step yet. I hope to send you good news when I have done it!!! Regards, Miguel 2009/9/9 Ross, Isabel (Access LLP) isabel.r...@access.uk.com ** Miguel We have upgraded our training system from 6.3 to 7.5 and got there in the end! I don’t know what the prerequisites are if you are coming in from 7.0 instead of 7.1, but I would expect there to be some. If you have customized ANY forms or workflow, rehearse and script the restoration of those customizations as it is a good bet that the various 7.5 upgrade installers will overwrite them. Some, like searching for customers in ITSM 7.0, have been _*extensively*_ rewritten and that will break any customizations that you have made to the module. Re: Windows 7 x64 and Remedy user clients
Just as an FYI, the 64-bit versions of desktop OS's are not supported for use with the Remedy User client - so such installations would be considered unconfirmed per the compatibility matrix. BMC tests the Remedy User client with 32-bit versions of desktop OS's like XP, Vista and Windows 7. Also, make sure to use a business oriented edition of Vista or Windows 7. Re: ARS 7.5 and Perl API
It depends. For now, there has been no official release of ARSperl for ARS 7.5. There is a developer version on Sourceforge which can be downloaded via CVS, see http://sourceforge.net/scm/?type=cvsgroup_id=116013; how to do this. This version is known to work at least on Windows. On Linux, compiling against the 64bit API produces a totally non-working binary, which seems to be a problem of compiling anything against the API together with Perl libraries. This has beem by acknowledged by BMC as a product defect (SW00330613). I don't know (and have no machine on which I could test this) about other Unix flavors. Re: how to add, modify or delete ars users using java API???????????
You may also consider using web services to do such changes rather than an API call. Using a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) would help insulate you from product version changes/upgrades, functionality changes in the API, etc. The web services for add/delete/modify users are provided by AR System out of the box. Chapter 6 of the Integration Guide covers web services: A web service provides an interface that enables messages to be sent to and received from an application over a network (Internet or intranet), using standard Internet technologies. AR System web services use a combination of protocols such as HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Extensible Markup Language (XML). AR System web services make AR System operations-such as submit, modify, and query-available to other applications regardless of hardware or software platforms and independent of the programming languages in which the applications are written. You publish web services to make AR System functionality available over the web. You consume web services when you use AR System applications to access third party web services. You use BMC Remedy Developer Studio to create and publish AR System web services to be used and consumed by external applications. -David J. Expand Box for character fields... bug maybe???
Listers, I guess its my turn to bug the list for a bit :-) I have noticed this a few days ago but thought I'd bring this up with Remedy Support later but before I do wanted to see what I hear from you guys here.. I have character fields where I have the Expand Box hidden.. WORKS with SINGLE-ROW fields.. However if I define a MULTIPLE-ROW field, the expand box DOES NOT HIDE irrespective of the choice of hiding or not hiding it. This happens both on the thick as well as the thin client.. I am almost dead sure it did hide when instructed to hide in the older versions.. Has anyone noticed anything in the new documentations that this new behavior may be as designed? Re: how to add, modify or delete ars users using java API???????????
2009/9/9 Easter, David david_eas...@bmc.com: You may also consider using web services to do such changes rather than an API call. Using a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) would help insulate you from product version changes/upgrades, functionality changes in the API, etc. The web services for add/delete/modify users are provided by AR System out of the box. You can do SOA using the API if you want, there is no need for web service to do SOA. And with the uniique design of AR System product changes/upgrades should not be an issue :-) http://communities.bmc.com/communities/docs/DOC-144 -- Jarl ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Platinum Sponsor:rmisoluti...@verizon.net ARSlist: Where the Answers Are
Printing a diary field from the web does not wrap and some information is missing

First off - this is where being very specific about Company, brand, product name and version is important. I posted a blog entry about this on BMC DN: http://communities.bmc.com/communities/community/bmcdn/bmc_atrium_and_foundation_technologies/bmc_remedy_ar_system/blog/2009/01/21/company-brand-product-version---why-all-are-important-to-keep-straight Several BMC Remedy applications will soon be revisioning to a version of 7.6. For example, applications within the ITSM suite of products (Change Management, Asset Management, Service Desk) will be revisioning collectively as BMC Remedy ITSM 7.6. Other applications may also revision to a version 7.6 over the next several months. AR System is not revisioning to version 7.6 in that same time frame. AR System will remain at version 7.5.00 until the next major release - which is tentatively scheduled to occur in mid 2010. The tentative numbering for the next AR System release is 8.0.00. When AR System 8.0.00 releases, then AR System 7.0.01 would become unsupported. When AR System 8.0.00 releases, the supported AR System versions would then be 8.0.00, 7.5.00 and 7.1.00. 7.1.00 would be the C-2 release and thus be in limited support as per the BMC Product Support Policy. -David J. Hello Ricki, That's odd.. It doesn't work for me.. How different is your environment from mine? I am on Windows 2003 ARS 7.5 Patch 2 User Tool 7.5 Patch 2 Dev Studio 7.5 Patch 2 Mid-Tier 7.5 Patch 2 Oracle database 10 Release 2 Browsers : Usually IE 6 on production, and 7 and 8 in test environment I also use FireFox 3.5 for fun although its not a standard here. JSP Engine: Tomcat 5.5.25 I am yet to see a type of client in my environment where the expand box hides on multiple rows character fields. Change them to single row and it hides.. I am yet to trust the new Development Studio as much as I used to trust the older Admin tool :-) so I just thought I'd add that the form was developed using the new development tool-set after installing ARS 7.5 Patch 2. So what is ITSM 7.6 ?... 7.5 with working installers and better QA (I hope, especially in the case of Atrium Core)? Or are they re-designing it yet again, meaning that the interfaces and blocks of code in the plumbing will change too? Or, is 7.6 just 7.5 with better integration to the non-Remedy applications in the BMC arsenal (which would imply even more changes to the Atrium Core)? It would be helpful to know that while we are trying to plan for an upgrade or migration from 7.1/7.0.3 to 7.5/7.5 within the next 6 months. Or, is 7.6 just 7.5 with better integration to the non-Remedy applications in the BMC arsenal (which would imply even more changes to the Atrium Core)? -David J. The fields you added are now required. Check the properties on the new fields in the Input Mapping.
