Re: Information regarding ARDBC Java plugin classes.....please

2011-04-05 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi,

Selection fields, such as the Status fields, store an integer in the
database that represent the value.

You have to get the field limits of your field to find out the
corresponding text value.

Also each view can have separate values for each value, which is usually
true only if you have multiple languages in your system.

These values are ordinarily converted form numeric to text in the client.
I guess you can keep it that way as well. Actually passing a numeric
(enum) value to from your plugin code to your 7.5 server.

2011-04-05 Thread John Baker
Hello,

Andrew: We're always happy to help BMC if they ask for our expert
advice. They haven't yet asked.

The "recommended" settings are too "round". Why 1024Mb and not 1112Mb?
The problem with this topic is that the "recommended" setting is going
to be different in almost every environment. ITSM consumes a lot of
memory but the recommended configuration depends entirely on usage.

Some people believe that if you throw more memory at something, it's
bound to get better: That's usually the wrong piece of advice in the
Java world.

The Java garbage collector was not designed to be run with Xms == Xms,
however, it may now be more forgiving of this option. And indeed, as
I've previously discussed on ARSlist, there are different types of
garbage collector.

The only bullet proof way of getting a reasonable set of memory
allocation variables is to experiment. Starting with 1Gb seems sensible,
but setting ms to 90% of mx is also sensible. If you are not using ITSM
and running your own custom application, 1Gb could be far more than you
need leading to noticable delays while the GC kicks in (it takes longer
for the GC to get rid of 800MB of waste than 400Mb, hence more is not
always good).

I'd suggest using a tool such as JConsole to monitor your JVM
performance: YOu can find a video on how to use JConsole here:

Guess I am still not clear on BPCU utility.

the customizations are saved???

I am on 7.6.04 system and was provided a def file of all custom code built in
7.1 and when I imported the def file it came in as 'unmodified'. Not aware of a
mechanism to convert these to custom (except the 'save as' option).

Hi!

Are you in Base Development or Best Practice Development?

If in Best Practice, your form needs an overlay before you can modify the
form, or you may want to convert your form to a Custom-form with the BPCU

Rafael,

I recommend turning on API/Filter/SQL logging on the server and analyzing
the timings of each call with something like AR Workflow Analyzer.it'll tell
you what api/sql calls took the longest and you can analyze from there to
find out why...the message in general just means that the client asked for a
process and the server took longer than 2 min's to respond..that's ALL it
means.it's up to you to figure out why it took so long.

Re: 7.6.04 developer studio indexes? / add / remove / delete

2011-04-05 Thread Easter, David
As per Doug's message:

" What you need is a way to promote a definition from base to a custom object.

We actually have logic to do that promotion (we also have logic to move
something from custom to base but that is not really something you should be
needing to do unless you made a mistake in a promotion). Unfortunately, we did
not expose that operation in Dev Studio. This is an oversight that we plan to
correct in a future release. You would then be able to simply go into base
mode, select the object(s) to promote and promote them.

The good news is that since it is an API call and the driver program that is
supplied with all installs allows you to call the API call that does the work,
there is a way you can use driver to promote things from base to custom.

ARSList doesn't allow me to attach things from what I understand so I have
included the text of a driver script that shows the calls for each type of
object to promote it. You could create a simple file that loops across a list
of things and promotes them. Again, this is a workaround, but it closes the
gap in Dev Studio. It is not for everyone; but for those experienced with
using driver and needing a solution and willing to put in a little extra work
today, it is available."

So BPCU does not need to be used to convert a definition from base to custom.

Beta program for ARSmarts 2.7 started

2011-04-05 Thread Support
**

Hello List,

Just in case you missed the first announcement, we recently opened
the beta program for ARSmarts 2.7.

The main novelties in version 2.7 of ARSmarts are the support of
Roles and Applications (certainly useful for ITSM users).  Roles and
applications are now supported through all the ARSmarts
functionalites: the Navigator, the Documenter and the Grapher.

If you feel like participating to this beta program, please register
here:  http://www.arsmarts.com/Register
You will then receive access to the download area as well as a
license for the duration of the beta program.

Best regards.

Importing definitions without Admin Tool or Dev Studio

2011-04-05 Thread Cecil, Ken
Can you tell me if there is any BMC or third party tool out there that
would let our QC team import definitions without giving them the
development studio or the Admin tool?

Part of our company's policy is that development must not take place on
production environments. So we develop in on one box and export/import
into production.

Another part of the policy is that whoever makes a development change
cannot also be able to put it into production (as a control). So,
developers are not allowed to move development objects into production
and do not have permission to the production system. Moving in the
changes is the responsibility of the Quality Change Control team.

To summarize the breakdown is this:

Dev - allowed to develop, not allowed to move into production
QC - allowed to move into production, not allowed to develop

I've been looking around for some utilities but haven't found any so
far. A command line definition import tool would be ideal.

If an import tool is not available. Are there any other alternative
angles you can think of for meeting these requirements?

Thank,
Ken Cecil

needing to do unless you made a mistake in a promotion).

2011-04-05 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza

This may not be happening for several reasons... I have had this fail on me for
one of these several reasons..

1) Incorrect configuration of the plugin in the ar.conf (ar.cfg) file..
2) Failure of workflow related to the Server Information page from being
installed for whatever reasons. It did happen to me once..
3) Incorrect configuration in the armonitor.conf (armonitor.cfg) file that
starts the plugin server such as a wrong server name or one that does not
resolve to the servers IP Address..

There were a few more instances where this has failed for me but I do not
recall them all right now but this should be a good starting point for you to
check..

Re: ARS 7.5 License Key

2011-04-05 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza
That’s the location where your armonitor.conf file gets copied before its
modified by an installation for eg when ITSM and AtriumCore installs
modified it..

The armonitor.conf file defaults its location to /etc/name>/armonitor.conf UNLESS you want it elsewhere, in which case, that path
is referenced from the startup script, from a parameter, which reads its
value from the ar.conf file. If you have no settings in the ar.conf file
that changes that default location of the armonitor.conf file, then look in
the /etc// directory.

If you are starting the server as non root and if this directory has root
permissions, it could be a reason why the startup script cannot access it..
You may have installed the server as root and then changed the permissions
to non root but forgot to chown supporting files and directories such as
this and the catalog files???

Will this be a problem?(armonitor file not present as part of the ARSystem

Hi Gopal,

Was this an upgraded (or moved) system? If so, have you had server
statistics on in the past?

I ran into a problem with a past system where the system kept shutting
down
and restarting - it was thinking it was an eval copy but there were more
than the limit of Server Statistic records in the DB which kept it from
starting correctly. In that case, I needed to have the DB truncate the
server statistics table (was
t4 in that system).

As stated previously, you should check the error logs, but if it's also
telling you that the system is an eval copy (would show in the AR Error
log), you may also want to see how many records are in the Statistics
table.

First and foremost check your log files to see what may be going on.. Having
said that here are a few tips to check certain things that could reduce your
performance to the level its at..

Check the size of the transaction log file, and flush it. SQL server 2000
onwards does manage it automatically, with auto growth enabled, but maybe
something is choking it? Make sure the disks where the log and data files of
the AR System database reside have a healthy amount of free space..

Also check your disk space on the AR Server, sometimes log files if enabled and
left enabled can grow large enough to fill up the disk, and this can choke the
AR Server as it does require a significant of free disk space to run..

Hope this helps..

I recommend turning on API/Filter/SQL logging on the server and analyzing the
timings of each call with something like AR Workflow Analyzer…it’ll tell you
what api/sql calls took the longest and you can analyze from there to find out
why…..the message in general just means that the client asked for a process and
the server took longer than 2 min’s to respond….that’s ALL it means…it’s up to

Might help if you tell us what exactly you expect the system to be capable of
doing, and the business requirement..

For some reason it looks like you are asking the obvious, can a web page
opened in a submit mode do a submit operation – yes.. But obviously that is not
what you mean to ask. I’m guessing what you are trying to ask is if you can
perform a save operation directly without user interaction of pressing a submit
button on the page after it is opened after querying for a particular entry or
entries.. Is that it?

If so yes, it should be possible too.. it would require creating a push field
operation using an active link and an appropriate execution condition that
would depend on what your business need is...

7.6.4 Upgrade

2011-04-05 Thread Daniel Condrea
Hello All,

We use ARS in custom mode and, so far, there is no need for UNICODE.

The migration from 6.3 to 7.1 let us upgrade ARS server on UNICODE Oracle 10g.
Consequently we have a ARS server that is nonUNICODE an Oracle that is UNICODE.

Now we have to migrate ARS server from version 7.1 to 7.6.04. The installer
does not let us upgrade to version 7.6.04 because the Oracle is UNICODE.

Do you have a document that details the steps that have to be taken to upgrade
a nonUNICODE ARS server from 7.1 to an UNICODE ARS server of version 7.6.04?

Thank you,
Daniel

What exactly are you looking for? I’m not sure how much help will a description
of the T table and the Helpdesk form view will help you if there have been
alterations / customizations done to this form which should be the case at most
sites.. You could potentially get 10 different sets of information from 10
different people..

If you are looking for a virgin OTB install, I could perhaps give you that next
week, after I setup a new server..

Even with that, the data types could differ depending on whether the choice of
database character set type was UNICODE or non-UNICODE... for e.g.. varchar on
non UNICODE, vs. nvarchar on a UNICODE database

Re: 7.6.4 Upgrade

2011-04-05 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza
If you want to upgrade from a non-UNICODE ARS database to a UNICODE
database, your DBA has got a few nails to bang before you can begin. You
need to do a table structure and data conversion to alter the database from
the current state to convert it to a UNICODE database..

Before you attempt this, it would be safe to have a backup of your database
in its current state, so you have a recovery point..

Subject: 7.6.4 Upgrade

Hello All,

We use ARS in custom mode and, so far, there is no need for UNICODE.

The migration from 6.3 to 7.1 let us upgrade ARS server on UNICODE Oracle
10g. Consequently we have a ARS server that is nonUNICODE an Oracle that is
UNICODE.

Now we have to migrate ARS server from version 7.1 to 7.6.04. The installer
does not let us upgrade to version 7.6.04 because the Oracle is UNICODE.

Do you have a document that details the steps that have to be taken to
upgrade a nonUNICODE ARS server from 7.1 to an UNICODE ARS server of version
7.6.04?

Thank you,
Daniel
