Re: install ars 8 against sybase15 doesn't work

Hi,well actually I was getting an error saying I have no sybase 64bits clients installed on my system at the very last stage after I gave the sa password.Yesterday I run with LAX_DEBUG set. What I could notice is when the installer starts it creates a temp folder and the lax output log was with the mentioned error message. But this happens even before I can agree to the terms of the license. So it looks like either the installer does not pick the right java at all. Or it has its own java embeded but its the wrong one.At this stage I am stuck because it looks like I could install any java and set any JAVA_HOME I like, the installer will always complain. Is there maybe a way (command line option maybe ??? ) to tell the installer to use my java at the start?I didn't see anything relevant in the docs.Did I miss something?S.On Mon, 04 Mar 2013 18:57:48 +0100, laurent matheo lm...@me.com wrote:Hi :)I guess JAVA_HOME points the the 1.6x jdk?Do you have this message at installer startup or during one of the installer screens? On 04 Mar, 2013,at 05:01 PM, Remedy Man remedy.man...@googlemail.com wrote:Susan, we are relying on the Matrix ... we don't take any red pil ;-) The doc says 64 bits sybase client so we installed a 64bits library client we source the sybase.sh and our OCS 15 is able to talk to the sybase server but when we run the ARS installer here is what we can read for instance: The installer either could not find a Java VM, or the Java VM on this system is too old. If we specify multiple AD Servers in AREA LDAP configuration how does
authentication works? Does ARS try authenticating the user in the order
they appear in the UI? Also is authentication tried out till at least one

Since I don't know what version you're on or where you are specifically,
I'll take a stab and guess that you're within the change request itself.
It's probably an Open Window action on an Active Link that is bringing over
the fields and you'd have to check to see if it is bringing over the Notes
field.

FTS

2013-03-05 Thread Vikrant
hi All,

My latest assignment requires me to setup FTS for the customer. I have some
questions on that front can anyone help me with that.

Our environment is ARS 7.5 P004

1) Can 1 Humming bird server be shared between 2 independent AR Servers. eg.
Can QA and Dev environment have same FTS search engine instance.
2) Apart from the configurations mentioned in the documentation do I need to
take care of anything special?
3) Should I be setting up FTS on Production server, Archival Server or
Reporting server? Production and Reporting server have past 13 months data and
Archival Server will have all the data since beginning of time. Implementing
FTS on production server will it be beneficial?

Thanks,
Vikrant

AREA LDAP Configuration (Multiple AD Servers)

2013-03-05 Thread John Baker
The standard deployment of multiple AREA LDAP plugins is fine if the
LDAPs all sit within one organisation.

It's not a secure solution for a multi-service provider who may
configure an instance of AREA LDAP for multiple customers, because it
means username/passwords for organisation X are being sent to
organisation Y, and so on.

In the #status# header I see: HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error

An error occurred while getting the call: SOAP Error: ARERR [90] Cannot

So I guess this is ok in the sense that the PHP recognizes this as a

provide anything more informative.

 Hi Folks,

 ** **

Recently, my DBAs migrated my Remedy Oracle DB to new hardware. This
activity necessitated an extended outage for my users. Typically, when my
system will be unavailable for an extended period, I install temporary
replacements for some HTML and JSP pages so that I can display information
about the outage and point to status pages, etc.

 ** **

For my Mid-tier users, I usually replace the index.html file in the Tomcat
webapps/ROOT/ directory and I also replace the
webapps/arsys/shared/login.jsp page with a redirect to an information
 page. This all works well.

 ** **

My question is about the Mid-tier servers that we have designated as part
of a pool of servers dedicated to responding to web service requests. Since

 Hi,

this should usually take less than 1 hour but I have seen this run for
longer on certain systems. As this uses the plug-ins to perform the work,
you should also look into the error files to see if there are issues with
the running of this process and ensure the plug-ins are enabled.

Production and Reporting server have past 13 months data
and Archival Server will have all the data since beginning of time.
Implementing FTS on production server will it be beneficial?

 Thanks,

Andy,

We tried acquiring BMC Mobile app early last year/end of 2011; but at the time
was not mature to handle a customized environment not the itsm suite. We don't
even use approval engine; as I think our change systems was prior to that. That
being said about our state, what we did, was using webservices, php and ios
webkit.jquery we built an mobile interface to that does limited processes like,
place an incident in progress/closed a request, a dash board of tickets based
on sla's, and dashboard for change. We are looking a adding phase 2, re-assign
requests and create request for Service managements. For change we will leave
to dashboard, because of nerc, serc, ferc, sox, and other compliances. No
attachments are viewed via this method, also. We use bigfix mdm to manage boyd
and corporate devices and vpn that access our mobile interface.

So based on you environment, BMC mobility may work.

Good luck.

CRQ and INC work detail table.

2013-03-05 Thread Peters, Ron
On the work detail table for Incident on HPD:Help Desk (AR 7.5 ITSM 7.6), I can
double-click an entry which brings up the Work Info form with the details for
the specific entry. The same work detail form for change on the
CHG:Infrastructure Change form does nothing. I can only view the records by
pressing the 'view' icon below the table.

For consistency, I'm looking at making them act in the same way though I'm not
sure what aspect is actually allowing the double-click on the record. I see
there is a 'drill down' attribute for something like this but that seems to be
disabled on the INC form. Something else has been configured. I looked through
the AL's for HPD:Help Desk and not only are there a lot, but either it's not an
AL or I missed it/them.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Re: Best way to out of service a Mid-tier server

2013-03-05 Thread Steve Kallestad
I very rarely show system messages to the end user. What makes sense from
a technical perspective very rarely makes sense to an end user.

SOAP Services are automated and it makes sense for Remedy to send errors
the way it does.

Generally, in whatever application I'm putting together I will have a
generic error handler. Within that error handler there is logic that does
4 things:

1) translates expected error messages to something the user will understand.
2) formats error messages in a manner that works with my end user interface
3) logs the error
4) attempts error recovery and failing that presents the error to an end
user.

You'll get errors form the SOAP library you are using (things like XML
invalid, destination server unavailable), from Remedy (database timeout,
password invalid, plugin server not available), and from the application
(must select item from menu, people record not found).

Every interface is going to have to deal with those errors as cleanly as
possible.

For out of service, there are a few things you can do.

1) You can flag your app to use an alternative server, and barring
availability:
  a) store requests and forward them when availability has returned
  b) alert your end users with a banner that says some functionality is not
currently available
  c) alert end users interactively when they run into problems
  d) bring your application into a not-available state

2) You can alert appropriate staff.
  a) by creating an incident
  b) by sending an SMS Message
  c) by sending an email
  d) by adding a log entry

Also for out of service, there are usually expected down times for
maintenance, upgrades, and whatnot. Pro-actively addressing that is
obviously a good idea. Sometimes it's on a schedule, sometimes you can get
the information from a monitoring system, sometimes you can get it directly
from Remedy.

Have a look at: http://php.net/manual/en/language.exceptions.php

Using try/catch will allow you to intercept the SOAP errors before they get
to your end user.

You'll have something like:

try {
  doTheSOAPThing($data);
} catch ($e) {
  raiseThePitchForks($e);
  echo humanFriendly($e-getMessage());
}

There are php.ini settings that will hide error messages from end users.
Typically, I will show error messages in development and hide them in
production. That prevents unexpected library errors from reporting too
much about your environment.

http://www.php.net/manual/en/errorfunc.configuration.php#ini.display-errors

A lot of library based errors will hand over information that you don't
necessarily want made public. Like the name of your database server or
user, installation paths, addresses of internal servers, etc.

Re: WWRUG13?

2013-03-05 Thread Ortega, Jesus A
Having it in Houston would be nice if it were in the Galleria Area of Houston.
There is of course the Galleria mall, lots of shopping there and some places to
go see within a few miles., Houston has a great variety of food. We were voted
the fattest city for a reason. There is a lot to eat around here. We have Tex
Mex, BBQ, Vietnamese, Chinese (real not Amerasian), Persian, Indian, Italian,
Greek, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and a lot of others. It is not as hot in
late September, but it is warm. Since Houston is a Port City, we get a great
mix of nationalities. No, we don't all ride horses on our ranches and have
pickup trucks. We do actually have a Symphony, Opera (no Opry), Ballet, and
very nice Art Museums. The bad thing about it is that Houston is a sprawling
behemoth. So you need a car to get to most places around here. Most places
don't charge for parking and the cost of living is low here, so shopping is
reasonable.
I went to the WWRUG in Virginia and that was a traffic nightmare compared to
Houston. Houston's traffic is bad, but not D.C. bad. If the WWRUG is in the
Galleria area, you would have plenty to keep you occupied. Downtown Houston
would not be as good because it clears out after dark. There are some local
bars to go to in Downtown, but not much in the way of restaurants after five,
like San Jose.

Personally I would go with October and do Octoberfest in Waterloo Canada,
But then we are in Friday conversation territory and last I checked today is

Arrangements are almost complete for remaining where we were towards late

But there is many a slip twixt cup and lip, or in this case pen and paper.

I am really hoping to be able to announce things this Friday,

Re: Tomcat errors in IE

2013-03-05 Thread Steve Kallestad
I haven't seen that happen myself, but Session already invalidated sounds
to me like the user has logged off.

There are a couple of things that might cause that:

   - The user actually logged off (unlikely, but still...)
   - An administrator released the license (again, unlikely)
   - Someone else (or the same user from a different machine/browser) is
using the same login and chose the option to override the session (entirely
   possible)
   - The session timed out
   - load balancer configuration does not match the session timeout
configuration in Midtier (a relatively common configuration miss)

Load balancers can be configured in a number of different ways. For
MidTier, they should be configured to continue sending the user to the same
server until that user's session ends.

If MidTier session timeouts are 60 minutes, the load balancer should also
be configured for 60 minutes.

If the load balancer is configured for a 30 minute timeout, after 30
minutes it may decide to send the traffic to a different server.

When that happens, the session from the first server doesn't exist on the
second server.

MidTier timeouts are configured in arsys/shared/config/config.jsp
Load Balancer timeouts are usually configured through a web interface on
the load balancer, but 9 times out of 10 there's a network admin who can
check pretty easily when asked.

Normally MT doesn't show a 500 and a stack trace, it will redirect to a
login page though so...

I wonder if there isn't more information in the arerror log showing a
thread crashing. Barring that, if this is always happening during
approvals, try turning on plugin logging and the approval engine log.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but at least it's a couple of places to
look.

Every now and then users are getting HTTP 500 errors using IE. Most
recently our CIO was trying to approve something and kept getting
 java.lang.IlleagalStateException: getAttribute: Session already
invalidated. Any ideas on how to mitigate these or is this a known error?
 We are on 7.6.04.

Windows Cross Domain SSO

2013-03-05 Thread Nathan Brandt
Suppose I have a setup where all ARS users reside in domain A and AR
Installation (mid-tier, AR Server and Db) are in domain B.

In order to achieve SSO (Integrated Windows Authentication) for users in
domain A against mid-tier in domain B what are the pre-requisites in terms
of domain trusts?

The way you worded this reminds me entirely too much of the old MCSE exams.
:)

In actuality, you don't really need to do anything. You can configure AREA
to authenticate from any given AD server, it does not need to reside in
your domain.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

It is not only about authentication. For Windows Desktop SSO to work,
Kerberos/NTLM tokens have to be passed around. My question is more related
to that. You are right about authentication, I can just specify one or more
AD servers in domain A (if it is a forest) in AREA configuration and
authentication would work fine.

I am basically looking for answers to the questions asked here
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13746669/spnego-cross-domain-configuration

I am planning to use Atrium SSO 8.0 with ARS 8.0 setup to get this working.
