Re: RKM 7.6.04 import of articles from a third party location

2011-07-20 Thread Alan Blake
You can't simply use the Data Import Tool because each RKM article stores data
in two forms: RKM:KnowledgeArticleManager (stores the article ID, Title, etc)
and then whatever type of article it is joined to HowTo, Reference etc is the
form containing those form specific values (Question, Answer, etc).
BMC has a non-GA tool that you can use to convert XML, CSV, HTML files into RKM
7.6 but you have to request it through customer support.
We have also had success creating a custom Java program that reads in the data
source and connects to the AR server and using the AR API you can populate the
respective forms.
Hope that helps.

Hi Tauf,

This is a project where we cannot go for any customization at all.

Leaving that aside can you tell me how to go ahead with it.

I am dealing with 4000 artilces here all in HTML format residing in a
sharepoint in Client environment.

Have you looked through the Admin guide for RKM? Perhaps you can create a join
form with the RKM Article Manager form and a custom form where you show the
html doc in a dataviz field. The issue there would be that you would rely on
solely the metadata of the article instead of the content but perhaps this can
be a temp workaround. How many articles do you have?

Moreover since I have HTML files here, they need to be converted in a format

Re: Remedy Knowledge Paks

2011-05-18 Thread Alan Blake
In 7.6.03 RKM was re-written as an AR app.  Therefore, the implementation of
RightAnswers is totally different than it was in previous versions of RKM.  I
haven't been part of an implementation with RightAnswers in RKM 7.6+ but I have
heard that it takes a decent amount of database space (with RKM content

I agree that RKM should be on its own machine.  I would look to go with 7.2

but you are custom environment anyway.  The 7.2 guide even walks through a

I would suggest putting it on a different server entirely
because we ran into some API issues trying to install it on the same server as
the Mid Tier.  It looks like you are using your application server, so you
may not have conflicting versions of Tomcat, but there is still a potential
somewhere for some sort of conflict.  Also, whether you like it or not,
the application is web-based.  RKM has literally nothing to do with Remedy
aside from some minor integrations, so it won’t be like dealing with
another Remedy app.  It’s dealing with a another third party app
that can be integrated with Remedy to populate it’s users and groups,
populate the dropdowns from the Product Catalog and such, and you can integrate
from Remedy apps to be able to display RKM in View Fields.  You should
look through the steps to integrating it with Incident Management, because you
could leverage some of that workflow to integrate it with your custom apps.
The only other thing to keep in mind is to be current on all patches, and hope
for the best.  If all doesn’t go well (I’ve never had an
install without some issues), Carrie at BMC is a wizard at supporting the
product.

Sounds
too good to be true, what am I missing?

One

7.6.03 ships with a tool that converts 7.2 or 7.5 RKM XML files into AR based
articles.  Development is working on an tool that will be similar to the 7.5
RKMConvert tool, but it hasn't been shipped yet.
Also, RightAnswers is providing their content in the new format.  As for other

Re: KRM 7.5 FTS Installation

2010-10-04 Thread Alan Blake
RKM 7.5 is only supported on Tomcat 5.  The easiest configuration is to put RKM
on its own machine and using the Hummingbird installer that comes with RKM (get
another machine) this way you also avoid contention with mid-tier.  You could
run multiple instances of Tomcat on your WEBSERVER machine and have hummingbird
live there as well.  You could also consider installing RKM on the APPSERVER
(with the installers built in Tomcat 5.5) and try to utilize your existing
Hummingbird on that same machine (although I don't really like this approach as
I like to keep the web requests off of the AR server). Alan BlakeKnowysis

I attempted to install RKM 7.5 and it failed because I am running Tomcat
6.0.29. I managed to add a Server folder and copy the lib folder in it
and the RKM installer picked it up and proceeded. However, after the
installer was done, I was unable to log into FTS ssAdmin.

I had to revert back my VM and restart the installation and this time, I
followed all the instructions on the RKM installation guide to avoid the
port conflict for Tomcat and still gave me the same results. By the way,
all the log files were free of errors or exceptions.

Has anyone encountered this before? Is there a work around or some sort of
configuration that I missed in order to avoid the Tomcat port conflict?
What’s the efficient installation of RKM in my situation given the below
configuration? Can I just install RKM and the AR integration on the mid-
tier and leverage the perfectly working instance of Hammingbird on the App
server?

Current Environment:

1- APPSERVER running

•Win 2003 Enterprise 32-bit

•AR 7.5.006

•ITSM 7.6.001 (AM, CM, IM, PM, RM, and SLM)

•Hammingbird SearchServer 6.1 with its own embedded tomcat instance

•AtriumCore CMDB 7.6.001 with its own embedded tomcat instance for web
services

•BMC Dashboard 7.6

2- DBSERVER running

•Win 2003 Enterprise 32-bit

•MS SQL 2005 Enterprise patch 003

3- WEBSERVER running

•Win 2003 Enterprise 32-bit

•Tomcat 6.0.29 separate instance

•Mid-tier 7.5.006 on port 8080

Any ideas or thoughts would be highy appreciated.

This is usually due to the fact that there is a port conflict between the two
instances of Tomcat.

This is from the BMC KM article 20018811.

In line 69, change

Connector acceptCount=100 connectionTimeout=2

disableUploadTimeout=true enableLookups=false

maxHttpHeaderSize=8192 maxSpareThreads=75 maxThreads=150

minSpareThreads=25 port=8080 redirectPort=8443/

to

Connector URIEncoding=UTF-8 acceptCount=100

connectionTimeout=2 disableUploadTimeout=true

enableLookups=false maxHttpHeaderSize=8192

maxSpareThreads=75 maxThreads=150 minSpareThreads=25

port=8080 redirectPort=8443/

In line 91, change

Connector enableLookups=false port=8009

protocol=AJP/1.3 redirectPort=8443/

to

Connector URIEncoding=UTF-8 enableLookups=false

port=8009 protocol=AJP/1.3 redirectPort=8443/

See if that helps.

Subject: RKIM 7.2 Kills Tomcat Service

Hi,

Long story short I have been trying to get RKM 7.2 to work and play nicely
with my current midtier installation

Midtier 7.1 patch 11
Windows 2003 server
Tomcat 5.5.25

Scenario 1
Installed RKM with separate Tomcat
moved .jar files to Tomcat common/lib dir

RKM works fine midtier works fine until you do an advanced search and it
kills Tomcat.

Scenario 2

Installed RKM and Midtier using same Tomcat with IIS integration
Midtier stays stable
RKM won't open admin pages get kms.web.controllers.AccessController:
Request is not secure, redirecting toservername in stdout.log file

Advanced searches still won't work

Any suggestions

Carin

RKM Access Event Log Failures

2010-08-02 Thread Alan Blake
I am seeing the following errors in the tomcat log and therefore not seeing
reliable Report data:
kms.sql.SQLServer - Failed to log access event: String or binary data would be
truncatedkms.sql.SQLServer - Failed to update usage count:
[Hummingbird][SearchServer] Numeric value out of range
Running MSSQL Server 2005 over Tomcat 5.5.25
Can anyone shed some light on these errors and possible resolutions?
Thanks.

2010-07-13 Thread Alan Blake
I agree.  RKM should really be on its own server.  If it must share it can live
fairly well with mid-tier - I never recommend putting it on the AR server.

We recently moved RKM to its own server due to performance
issues and issues dealing with shared files in Tomcat when we would apply
patches
or upgrades.  It is definitely feasible to have RKM and the Mid Tier on the
same server, and we ran with that for quite a while, but it’s easier to support
RKM onto its own server.

Hello Listers,

if you have a classical 3 tier environment, where to install BMC RKM, on the
MidTier Server or on the Server where AR Server is installed?

Thanks in advance.

Anyone run into this problem before?

Barring locating that solution my next option is to place some sort of button

this will pass onto the Remedy session through the integration piece. (maybe
with a little workflow)

Wherever you choose to install Hummingbird, you will find a fultext subfolder

You can access the SS Admin (where you can browse the index tables and data) by

Re: KB tool

2010-06-15 Thread Alan Blake
**
It is quite simple to install (in 7.5 it even does the ITSM integration work for you as before you had to modify forms/active links).Configurations are pretty simple and most are done via a GUI configuration tool (all of them are driven via the KMS_Config.xml file) so if editing XML is something you are comfortable doing then you shouldn't have too much difficulty.I recommend you change the Authoring workflow steps, review the templates and tweak as needed for your business needs. I would certainly look to KCS as the methodology that drives your process and subsequent configurations.Overall, RKM becomes very usable very quickly, but getting your analysts to actually own and use the knowledge it stores is where you will find the most difficulty. In helping organizations
implement KCS and RKM we have found that this is really where the service desk obtains true economies of scale as you are effectively able to reuse your knowledge in resolving incidents.Alan BlakeKnowlysis--- On Tue, 6/15/10, Boyd, Rebecca E. boy...@wfu.edu wrote:From: Boyd, Rebecca E. boy...@wfu.eduSubject: Re: KB toolTo: arslist@ARSLIST.ORGDate: Tuesday, June 15, 2010, 8:13 AM**

We are looking at deploying KM it for internal purposes (at
least initially) and fall under the category of a small to medium shop.

Exactly how hard is it to get it up and running?

Assuming we get past the installation, how much configuration
is there before it is actually usable?

I think it depends a bit on what you’re environment is and
what you’re looking for. RKM is designed around Remedy, so you do
get some nice integration features like being able to specify resolution category
information, etc., for when you use a KB article to solve an Incident and such.

That said, I would also look at the number of people using the
system, how you intend the KB to be used (self support, as an aid to the help
desk, etc.), how many articles you expect to have in the KB, etc. In my
experience, RKM is not an enterprise class application, but it more suited to
smaller shops. It lacks good management capabilities for a large number
of users, Remedy support groups, and articles. For a smaller shop (say,
less than 100 support groups, or only a few hundred users, a few hundred or a
few thousand articles, etc.), RKM may be fine. For a larger organization,
in my experience, the tool has not been stable enough or manageable enough.
In our case, it has been the most problematic of any of the BMC applications
I’ve worked with.

So, for a small to medium organization, RKM may work fine.
For a larger organization, or where you intend to supply a knowledge base to a
large set of external clients, there are a number of other possible solutions
that may work better for you depending on your needs, and most of the major KB
vendors will claim that they can integrate with Remedy in one way or another.

In the KMS_Config.xml set the debug=3 then try again and you will get more

Hello,

I try to install RKM 7.5 patch 1 on Oracle
10g. I use jdk/jre 1.6 and Tomcat 6.0. The installation succeeds, but the
post_installation fails, when trying to connect to Oracle. I always receive an
error 0RA-01017 (invalid user/password), though I am quite sure my password is
correct. I tried the jdbc connection strings like : host:port:sid
and also tried the full description coming from tnsnames.ora
(description=(addresslist=…).
I also tried to change the ojdbc*.jar file to more recent version in the lib
directory of RKM, and in the lib directory of tomcat, I still get ORA-01017.

Any tip ?

Thanks a lot.

Ran the Update scripts

Brought everything back andMy helpdesk complained that it was even worse!
They were right.  The thing was fried.

So, I ran kms_Rebuild.bat.

This seemed to clean things up BUT none of the published KB's are available!  I
went back and took a look, and whenever the Published index attempts to build,
it comes back with an error:

Press any key to continue . . .Now, I've tried everything I can think of but no
luck.  I have even tried adding unprotect table Published; to the

Re: RKM Document Migration from Dev to production

RKMConvert is the data import tool.  It was improved in the 7.5 release.  You
will need to update each of your articles in DEV to have new ID numbers both as
their filename and in the  doc_id field within the XML file.  The change to the
database must also be done.  The table name is sequence and the column to
update is seq_last_value

To really do it, you probably need to manually rename the files
and edit them with the document ID that you want them to have.  You will
probably also have to update the RKM database to increase the next document ID
to a number greater than the last article that you will be adding from dev (I’m
not sure where that field is off the top of my head, though – and I would
probably do that before you start editing and renaming files to ensure that you
don’t get new articles added in production with a document number that you were
going to use for your dev articles).  Then I think you can probably just throw
the documents in the Published directory (or whatever it’s named) and then
reindex your articles for them to get picked up and included in search results.

Subject: RKM Document Migration from Dev to production

**

List,

I am in a pickle here.  I have 200 RKM documents that
are in a dev environment.  Thise ID's  are 100-300.  I am being
asked to move them into poduction where there are 500 documents, 100-500.

Is there an easy way to move those 200 RKM documents from dev into
production that will automatically pick up the nextr id's like 501 etc...

This is what I did and the stepts I took

This is what I did

1.    Took publish document and click modify

2.   This opened it up in draft status

3.   I then modified the document and clicked save

4.   I then took the draft document click modify

5.   The I clicked on promote.

6.   That then saved and closed out the article.

7.   This brought me back to the main page

8.   The draft article was no longer there.

9.   I looked at the published article and it has the changes I made.

10.   I reindexed the server and the draft version is showing up again.

I looked in the RKM Data folder and the draft article document never left.

It seems like the problem is once I put a published article in draft to modify
I can never get that draft out besides if I manully delete it.

The no suitable driver all comes down to you JDBC connection defined in
KMS_Config.xml you have to make sure you are referencing the driver correctly.
RKM 7.5 doesn't integrate out of the box with ARS 7.1 the workflows are
different.  If you are running ARS 7.2 I recommend RKM 7.2 patch 3

Subject: Re: RKM No Suitable Driver

On 7.1 and 7.2 I have had much better luck installing RKM with the JDBC Driver
for SQL Server 2000 installed, even though I was normally using it against a
local install of SQL Server 2005 Standard; the KMS_config.xml file is coded
for that, and is better able to complete the installation.  THEN I usually
edit the xml file to change the driver.

OOTB:
  !-- Shipping default is SQLServer2000 on localhost:1433(default install) --
  database driver=com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver
password=!!gdfadfcdfddhglda schema_name=rkm type=sqlserver
url=jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://localhost:1433 user=RKMAdmin/
/RKM_boot

...and then comment out the old line and add the new line with the correct
syntax for the 2005 driver (.jdbc.sqlserver. get inverted to sqlserver.jdbc):

  !--database driver=com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver
password=!!gdfadfcdfddhglda schema_name=rkm type=sqlserver
url=jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://localhost:1433 user=RKMAdmin/--
  database driver=com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver
password=!!gdfadfcdfddhglda schema_name=rkm type=sqlserver
url=jdbc:sqlserver://localhost:1433 user=RKMAdmin/
/RKM_boot

I checked several of my RKM 7.2 servers, and all have the 2000 syntax
commented out and the 2005 syntax added.  Trying to do this _during_ the
install doesn't work - do it afterwards.

==

BTW, in 7.5 they include more possibilities for the db:

Out-of-the-box JDBC driver
A JDBC driver is provided with the BMC Remedy Knowledge Management
installation, for Sybase, Oracle®, and MS SQL databases. MySQL databases
requires you to acquire the relevant JDBC driver.

!-- Shipping default is SQLServer2000 on localhost:1433(default install)
--
        database_mysqldisabled driver=com.mysql.jdbc.Driver initial=0
max-active=75 max-idle=25 min-idle=0 password=password
url=jdbc:mysql://localhost/rkm user=root/
        database driver=com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver
initial=0 max-active=75 max-idle=25 min-idle=0
password=!!gdfadfcdfddhglda schema_name=rkm type=sqlserver
url=jdbc:sqlserver://localhost:1433 user=RKMAdmin/
        database_sybasedisabled driver=com.sybase.jdbc2.jdbc.SybDriver

initial=0 max-active=75 max-idle=25 min-idle=0 password=password
url=jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:orcl user=system/

...and the installer must have set the syntax to 2005 or later; my db on that
server is SQL Server 2008.  It was built in early November, days before WWRUG
2009 as a new install with RKM 7.5.00.001, and I have forgotten whether the
installer even supports SQL Server 2000, or what choices it gave me (and none
of the documentation is helpful in this regard).

Give this a try and see if this resolves your issue

1. Locate the applicationhost.config file. It is probably in
C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config

2. Open the applicationhost.config file and find requestFiltering

3. Add  allowDoubleEscaping=true to it so it will look now look like this
requestFiltering allowDoubleEscaping=true

You can also find the instructions for this at

Hope this helps

Not found error.

I think it may have something to do with getting Tomcat configured correctly.
Has anyone done this on 2008? What extra steps are required after the AR
install routine?

I saw these post installation instructions in the ARS Installation Guide
unfortunately it looks like they only apply to server 2003 since I don't even
have that directory or scripts they mention.

To run Tomcat with IIS on Windows 2003 Server x64

1.    Install the mid tier, and choose Tomcat as the JSP engine.
2.    In a command window, change directories to C:\Inetpub\AdminScripts.
3.    From the command window, run the following command:

cscript.exe adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32BitAppOnWin64 1

This step enables 64-bit IIS to run 32-bit processes.

4.    From the command window, run the following command:

cscript.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\iisext.vbs /AddFile C:\Program Files
(x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Jakarta Isapi
Redirector\bin\isapi_redirect.dll 1 jakarta 1 jakarta

This step adds and enables the Jakarta Isapi Redirector web service extension.

5.    Stop and restart IIS.

Thanks for your help,
Ken.

Re: Cannot load required libraries - RKM 7.2

2009-12-18 Thread Alan Blake
When you get Cannot load required libraries that typically means there is a
conflict in the JAR files with mid-tier (like you saw in the KB articles).
Seeing as you don't have mid-tier on the same box as RKM that isn't the issue.
As the log describes you have an AR connection issue.  Confirm that you have
the correct host, user, password for your AR Connection setting in
KMS_Config.xml.  This user must be an Administrator and have a fixed license.

need to consider migration. I remember trying to migrate files from

Scope related questions important too - what goes in what stays out what
gets public what stays internal.

Role related questions - who are subject matter experts - who are the

Categorization related questions - to separate lets say IT related stuff

Re: Need tips on integrating Sharepoint as a KB

I suggest you take a look at KCS (Knowledge Centered Support) principles before
you start an integration.  Ensure your business users understand the importance
of Knowledge Management and that it isn't just s software solution but a

Once they have that understanding, I would mimic the RKM integration with

Hi all-

We are not using the RKB product but I'm interested in any information out
there about integrating an MS Sharepoint install that contains troubleshooting
documents into my custom Remedy installation. Ideally once a user selects the
CTI and types a short description of the problem they would be presented with
documents from the Sharepoint that are relevant. I am running 7.0.1 at the

I have to imagine that someone out there has done this already, any pointers to
get me going in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Re: Remedy v7.5 Hardware Landscape - Suggestions??

2009-09-14 Thread Alan Blake
With Knowledge Mgr or RKM (I'm assuming) your single point of failure for
failover will be your Hummingbird search server.  For true loadbalancing you
will want at least two web servers running RKM and one data server housing the
search server.  You could then mirror that setup as an entire failover solution
and you would just need to rebuild your search server indexes.
I typically like to see RKM on a separate machine than mid-tier (two enterprise
applications fighting over the same Tomcat resource can be problematic)

Hope that helps.

ARSList,
Good afternoon.  I wanted to know out there could please help out with some
ideas for putting together a hardware landscape architecture proposal for a new
Remedy v7.5 environment.
Our client has asked us to come up with a to-be hardware landscape for a new
Remedy v7.5 environment. The client has around 500 concurrent users but they
support about 4500+ Remedy users.
They're currently using the following modules on an ARS v6.3 server:
- Help Desk
- Knowledge mgr
- Asset
- CMDB v1.1
- Mid-tier
The above modules and database currently reside on the same Sun Solaris server
running Unix.  The DB is an Oracle 9x db.
As far as the new v7.5 environment, they're looking to use the following
modules:
- Incident
- Problem
- Knowledge Mgr
- Asset
- CMDB
- Mid-Tier
They would like to continue to use an Oracle DB on a Unix server for the DB,
but want to breka out the ARS on a separate server.
To help out, they have provided the following hardware for the v7.5 landscape:
2 Domains of 4 x 16 on M5000 Sun Server.
They would like to use load balancing and the proposed hardware landscape for
v7.5 will be for production only. They'd like to use VMWare instances for their
DEV and QA environments.
Another requirement would be to have a Disaster Recovery site for failover.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Many thanks.

It looks like from BMC's pages that this can only generate reports for ITSM

Are there any oracle gurus out there

I'm setting up Heterogeneous Services

I am trying to figure out how to start

I can't find the Listener Utility.  Is
it part of the Oracle installer?

When I type LSNRCTL start ... from the
command line, it says 'lsnrctl' is not recognized as an internal or external

I do a search in the oracle directory
and it is not there.

Any ideas how to install it?  What
option in the Oracle installer installs the utility?

Thanks JK

I discovered a bug
when using the Incident Management 7.02 integration with BMC Knowledge
Management 7.2.

Not sure if others
out there have RKM 7.2 but here is how you can replicate the
bug:

1.  Open an
incident in the Remedy User client that has at least one carriage return in the
Summary field, Notes field, or Resolution field
2.  Click on
the button Create Knowledge Base Entry on the Resolution tab of the
incident.

At this point you
should notice that the contents of your Incident are populated into the RKM web
article window correctly.

Now follow these
steps when logged into your Mid Tier:

1.  Open the
same incident you opened before in the Remedy User client
2.  Click on
the Create Knowledge Base Entry on the Resolution tab of the
incident.

You should notice
that the contents of the incident are NOT populated into the RKM web article
window.

I was able to verify
this with certainty.

It seems to be an
issue with the REPLACE command used in the active link
KMS:HD:Create_KB_Solution.
In this active link,
there is a Push fields action that pushes to the KMS:DataExchange form and
pushes xml coding and other data from the incident to a Data field on this
form.
Inside the Value
being passed to the Data field you can see there are various REPLACE commands
that try to replace a carriage return with a BR.

This workflow
apparently works fine with a incident with carriage returns if fired from the
Remedy User tool but not for the Mid Tier.

Am I going crazy or
is this clearly a server or application issue?

Re: RKM 7.2 and ITSM 7.0.3 Problem Mgmnt Integration

2009-03-10 Thread Alan Blake
The Problem Management integration basically exposes the RKM articles so you
can use the KB for your problems or root causes.  A question that always
comes up is why not just use RKM for your known errors?  Because in known
errors you are able to track the lifecycle of the error and this isn't done as
well through RKM.  The Solutions DB is effectively replaced with RKM and should
not be used.  All of your knowledge should be managed in RKM.

Hope that helps.

Hi all,

So we’ve installed RKM 7.2 with the latest patch and
all the “integration” pieces that go along with it like hiding the
OOB solution table from incident and service request and all that jazz.

However, I am trying to get an idea of how others are
dealing with the OOB Problem Management Known Errors and Solution links and
workflow that aren’t handled by BMC’s “integration.”
Are you disabling/redirecting to RKM for the Known Errors, modifying workflow,
or are you maintaining 2 systems and rekeying? Another option would be to use
OOB Known Errors and Solutions, and only ‘promote’ to RKM when
needed.

Looking for ideas or good/established practices…

Thanks!

We have helped a lot of organizations implement RKM. Like Joe says it is a
fairly simple application. You just need a basic knowledge of XML to
configure it. We have also found that a best practices approach (KCS) to

She knows her stuff as she is a SME as far as RKM is concerned.

Besides once you get to know the application its not so hard to work with
it. Its a fairly simple application, with most of its configurations and
customizations done with simple tweaks in the configuration files and the
other xml templates within the application.

Sandra,

The Remedy Knowledge Management Application is fairly independent of the AR
System application and can be installed as a standalone as well as use
Remedy for authentication.

You might have to tweak the integration piece to the Helpdesk application to
make it work for 5.5, but it should be possible. The integration piece for
the application is a semi manual process for 7 anyways as you have to
manually create the fields and tabs necessary for the integration, giving it
the necessary field ID's manually.

I do not see why this process will not work on 5.5. In fact the earlier
release of RKM (version 7.0 and its patches before 7.2 did to the best of my
knowledge say that they could be integrated to helpdesk 5.5)

Hope this helps..

Cheers

Joe

Re: RKM Search Results more than 50

2009-02-05 Thread Alan Blake
There is a setting in KMS_Config.xml that limits search results so you won't
even be able to see more that the default 50.

searchEngine max-hits=0

Look for the searchEngine tag and add the max-hits attribute. You can set
this to anything, if you set it to 0 then it is unlimited. The default is
50 if it isn't set.

As far as defaulting the drop down selection value there is no configuration
setting to do that, you could likely pull it off by utilizing the template
feature and extending the JS code to do so, but more than likely your users
won't scroll through 100 results anyway before trying a new search.

Alan,

I realize you already found a solution... but I had already started
this... so .. I will send it anyway.

Ok... now that post defines what you are after... :)

You need to find the string value (in a string form) so that you can
pass the string out to an external integration. ( Sorry, but using a
URL to pass data has to be defined as an external integration in my
book. Even if the web site is the Mid-tier. Which RKM is not actually
the Mid-tier anyways. But that is another fish to fry in a different
thread.. :) )

One approach that I have seen people take...

Create a second selection field that does not have a difference
between the Alias and the Value values for the selection field. That
way you keep the two fields in sync at design time and at run time you
set the no-alias field with the current value from the Alias field
then you can use the no-alias fields value and get the Value
string your after. Note: You may have to set the no-alias selection
field to a character field too. (But that should just be a few actions
in one active link.

Another is to go to the DB with Direct SQL. ( It can be done, but I
would strongly suggest not going this route.) In the short term it
should work. However, Remedy (and now BMC) has never made any promise
of not changing the DB at anytime. So what may work now (at the SQL
level) may not work after a patch is installed, or a version upgrade
is done.

Yet another route... is to use the ARS API. I would think that a
Filter Plugin should be a very viable way to get at this information
with minimal effort... I do note however, that you did not specify
what AR Server version your using if it is =7.1 then let me know
and I will whip up an example ARF for you for this function. It should
be very trivial to implement in the Java API, but I just can not
supply a C API plugin for you. ( I am thinking a method like
getSelectionValue(String Form, int fieldId, int selection_field_value)
Combine that with a Service call from an Active Link and there you go.
:)

Anyway.. hope some of that helps someone. :)

pass it as a URL param, not the Alias value.

I think your confusing yourself a bit but maybe not...

Selection fields are just an integer value as far as work flow (Active

the field shows the Alias String (for the integer) when the user looks
at the field and when you echo the fields value in a Message action.

So .. maybe you could explain more about what you are trying to do and
maybe some suggestion could be made for how to do that?

So this is for a RKM integration where you push values as URL params. So I
need the active link to read in the Value of the selection field so I can
pass it as a URL param, not the Alias value.

Alan,

I think your confusing yourself a bit but maybe not...

Selection fields are just an integer value as far as work flow (Active
Links, Filters, and Escalations) are concerned. However, to the user
the field shows the Alias String (for the integer) when the user looks
at the field and when you echo the fields value in a Message action.

So .. maybe you could explain more about what you are trying to do and
maybe some suggestion could be made for how to do that?

Re: Selection Field: Value vs. Alias Value?

2009-01-19 Thread Alan Blake
I basically have gone with the approach of using a hidden temp field that
converts the Alias value to the underlying value needed for the URL param.
I wanted to make it more dynamic but at least this works (even if it takes
10 active links to do it).

Re: ITSM 7.0.3 -Installing Knowledge Management Module

2008-10-21 Thread Alan blake
It depends how you want to manage your knowledge. If you want to have
static word documents be your repository of knowledge then you would simply
utilize the legacy data feature of the KM module that allows you to drop
them into a folder called general that RKM can read and index and be
usable in your KM search results.

Alternatively, you convert your legacy data to RKM formatted solutions that
can be maintained with an authoring workflow and through the use of KM best
practices become more useful and effective knowledge to your organization.

Open beta should not require me to get approved by the vendor. I
should be able to go to their web site (like here:
 http://www.bmc.com/beta_program/public/available_betas.cfm) and get
 the software.

Oh look... it is not just me

 Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta_test#Beta

Developers release either a closed beta or an open beta; closed beta
versions are released to a select group of individuals for a user
test, while open betas are to a larger community group, usually the
general public. The testers report any bugs that they found and
sometimes minor features they would like to see in the final version.

But the article does go on to say this too...

When a beta becomes available to the general public it is often widely
used by the technologically savvy and those familiar with previous
versions as though it were the finished product. Usually developers of
freeware or open-source betas release them to the general public while
proprietary betas go to a relatively small group of testers.
Recipients of highly proprietary betas may have to sign a
non-disclosure agreement. A release is called feature complete when
the product team agrees that functional requirements of the system are
met and no new features will be put into the release, but significant
software bugs may still exist. Companies with a formal software
process will tend to enter the beta period with a list of known bugs
that must be fixed to exit the beta period, and some companies make
this list available to customers and testers.

So I guess what BMC means by Open beta must be more along the lines
of the proprietary beta process. Which really sounds like a closed
beta to me. (AKA: released to a select group of individuals for a
user test) Maybe they will someday make the switch to an open beta
and use their entire customer/partner base. Maybe they could do that
in the form of a Patch site download? That should keep the faint of
heart and the non-paying customers out of the beta.

Shrug. I asked my sales rep to be included in the beta... then he left
the company. So I guess my request to be in the Alpha/beta likely left
with him. I is simply to hard to know when and how to request access
 to a closed beta.

FWIW: In a very general way, I have these thoughts on Beta testing
 programs from any software manufacturer:

I think the benefits of the closed beta programs are so limited to
almost be self fulling prophesy for the company. If you only ask
your customers that only use your OOB applications and they only test
your OOB applications, then the company has a good shot at being able
to do that same testing in Alpha and knowing the results before the
beta starts. But that also means that you learned almost nothing by
expending all of those resource outsourcing (to the customer) the
testing that you have already done internally.

However, if all of the existing customers were to test what they do
with the product, then the company is likely to not have tested all of
the strange and special ways that those crazy customers out there end
up making the product fit that square hole problem. And trust me the
crazy customers want/need to test the next version because they know
that they are pushing the envelope of the product and are on the
(often) bleeding edge of the tech. So those testers are more likely to
participate than the just OOB customers anyway.

However those crazy customers will likely result in more known
issues/bugs and a decrease in customer confidence due to the well
known broken state of the next version. That hurts sales of the new
version and thus hurts the company. So the company decides to keep the
beta testers more exclusive to avoid the pain points and to try to
keep the customers happy with the non-existent experience instead of
satisfied with the quality of the product that they used in the
 testing program.

But maybe it is just me. Maybe some day when I am running my own
 software company :)

When did the Beta start? We are signed up for it and I didn't get a heads up
about having received access to download the code?

year.

The beta tests however must be soon enough as I noticed that from about 2
weeks you have the option or raising a Trouble Ticket citing it as a ARS 7.5
problem as 7.5 is already made available on the version list..

Dave,
Last I heard, which was last week, is this quarter. Still, no definite date
has been set.

Re: Roles and Permissions....

2008-10-08 Thread Alan Blake
Flight Deck is still a program run by BMC for demonstrations, pre-sales etc
on VM. How can I obtain this PermissionsandRoles.exe?

That program is very good - a lifesaver for those struggling with
permissions on ITSM.

Flight Deck is (or was) BMC's pre-sales and demonstration VM platform. It
was a good idea, but the technology of the time hindered its effectiveness.
Not sure who's running that now, or even if it's still being used.

I received a really great program called PermissionsandRoles.exe from

a member of the ARLIST - it's a great help! It appears that it's authored by

a flight deck organization (???). What would be great would be the
ability

to print out the roles and permissions that are displayed. Does anyone know

how to get in contact with the flight deck/author to see if it's possible
or if

the program might have switches etc. to allow the output to be saved?
Thanks!

Re: SSL on Knowledge Management

I'm assuming your Knowledge Management tool is Remedy Knowledge
Management?

Update your KMS_Config.xml with your ssl port.

Subject: SSL on Knowledge Management

Hello All

I have running Mid-tier (SSL ) and just added the Knowledge Management tool
to the list. The problem I am having is that my Knowledge Management
installation will not allow SSL even though the rest of the ITSM products
work at the moment with no problem. Can anyone provide some insight on why
this may not be working or how any of your clients may have had success in
this.

I have already tried to change the server.xml file as well as updated the
kms_conf.xml file. All which have no success. I can see the application on
http: but when I change KMS information to https: all goes down from there.

Mid-Tier 7.1.0 Patch 4

AR Server 7.1 Patch 6

SQL Server 2005

Apache Web Server/ Tomcat

Any information would helpful right now.

Re: SSL on Knowledge Management

2008-10-06 Thread Alan Blake
So you have three options:

1 ) set both unsecure and secure ports = secure mode is only utilized at
login

2) set ONLY secure = every page is returned over SSL

3) set ONLY unsecured = every page is returned with no ssl
