Re: Overlay follies: Selection fields
Thank you for the explanationbut here's another 2 cents worth from the other side of the aisle At least to me it seems that Remedy is consistently released far sooner than it should be. It seems that there is a very pronounced lack of QA testing before release. Witness all of the comments/bugs/fixes, etc. on this list. I could point to many instances of this aside from my personal experience. I've had a lot of experience with BMC support and it's incredibly frustrating and discouraging to always be told to send the log files and then find out that after n days there's still no progress from the support folks - who again ask for more logs and my ar.sys file.. then it's like pulling teeth to even get a callback.. The issue of the utility that was released is an example. Either the BMC folks who spec out what should be released with a product to enhance user experience and usability really missed the mark or someone totally missed the boat. The product was released with a feature that was incredibly cumbersome to use. It's sort of like saying that a new compiler was released with a new feature. The release folks say we know that this new feature is very complex and powerful, but yes, we did release it with an editor to make the task of using it easier. The customers say yes, but the editor was a hex editor. The company says we'll release it with a good text editor in the next releasebut it DOES have an editor. Anywayjust some things to chat with the product release and QA folks about From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Mueller, Doug Sent: Thursday, December 01, 2011 2:34 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Overlay follies: Selection fields ** I just thought I would share a few personal thoughts on this note. First, I am the last person to say that we are perfect. There are always going to be cases where something is missed or where an error is made. We attempt to minimize those situations, but we will never be able to eliminate all possible errors. Yes, there are times when it is a bit embarrassing to have to admit that an error that was pretty obvious was made. When these errors show up, we work to correct them as aggressively as possible. Second, in any product, or even feature of a product, there are always more things that you could have done. More capability. More bells and whistles. Better performance. More scale. If that was not true, no product would ever need a 2.0 release because everything would be perfect the first time. In this case, there is no product defect. The product works. You can overlay things. They overlay correctly. The steps to perform the overlay are correctly documented, and you can get the result you were looking for and that was designed for. The problem is that use cases mean that there is a lot of work to do and a lot of steps to do that work. And, it would be nice if there were fewer steps involved. So, accelerators to make it faster would be useful. There was a utility developed that could offer that acceleration. The product supports the addition of these kinds of additions between release cycles - a FEATURE of the product to allow extension without re-releasing the product. A developer took advantage of the feature to allow extension and produced a utility that offered the acceleration that was desired. This was done at the time the customers were having difficulty with the number of steps rather than waiting for a future release. At the same time, there is work under investigation to see whether the condition that required the operation to do many overlays could be completely avoided and become unnecessary to make the operation even easier and even less impactful in the future. There is a good idea of how to accomplish that enhancement and it is likely to make a future release to further simplify operation of the system. So, a short term assist immediately and work on a long term enhancement to further improve interaction. In summary, the product was not unfinished in this case. It was a fully finished set of capabilities and they did in fact work as documented and provided the capability desired. Customer issues were comments that it was harder than they would like and are there ways to make it easier. A reaction was to provide a utility that could be included within the product using features of the product designed to allow for those additions and for API interaction with the system so that improvement could be made for customers immediately. So, I would humbly disagree with your assessment about bragging. Personally, I tend not to brag about the capabilities (I may be proud of them and excited that they help customers but I tend not to brag about them - although I do tend to brag about the team and the overall job they do). But if I was to want to brag What happened in this

You do not (and have not really) required session persistence with the ARServer. A whitepaper available for 7.6 details this. The timeout on the load balancer needs to match or exceed the session timeout of your mid-tier application. If you are using a single sign on solution the mid-tier session timeout needs to be less than or equal to the SSO session timeout. So this would be a valid combination: Mid-tier Session Timeout: 60 minutes SSO Session Timeout: 120 minutes Load Balancer Session Persistence Expiration: 60 minutes In order for a J2EE application to not require session persistence a number of things have to be in place: - all objects in the container must be serializable - the container nodes in the farm must be configured as a cluster (session information must be serialized) There are some things that make me believe this is not possible with the midtier. Some information that is session specific is written to disk. I doubt these can be properly replicated between the J2EE containers. The release notes make the following statement: http://documents.bmc.com/supportu/documents/43/74/184374/184374.pdf New load balancer configuration options If your AR System uses a hardware load balancer between the mid tier servers and AR System servers, BMC recommends configuring that load balancer without using a sticky bit by using the Connection Settings page in the BMC Remedy Mid Tier Configuration tool. Note that it does not state to turn it off for the load balancer in front of the mid-tier. You might be able to get away without setting up session persistence with the later versions of the midtier since the API does not have a native library dependency (assuming they implemented the serializable interface for all the non-native session specific things), but there is extra configuration you need to do with your J2EE container. For Tomcat, see here: http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/cluster-howto.html To run session replication in your Tomcat 6.0 container, the following steps should be completed: - All your session attributes must implement java.io.Serializable - Uncomment the Cluster element in server.xml - If you have defined custom cluster valves, make sure you have the ReplicationValve defined as well under the Cluster element in server.xml - If your Tomcat instances are running on the same machine, make sure the tcpListenPort attribute is unique for each instance, in most cases Tomcat is smart enough to resolve this on it's own by autodetecting available ports in the range 4000-4100 - Make sure your web.xml has the distributable/ element - If you are using mod_jk, make sure that jvmRoute attribute is set at your Engine Engine name=Catalina jvmRoute=node01 and that the jvmRoute attribute value matches your worker name in workers.properties - Make sure that all nodes have the same time and sync with NTP service! - Make sure that your loadbalancer is configured for sticky session mode. So even with Tomcat cluster configurations the load balancer must have session persistence. I imagine the strategy with the above statements is to support a session moving from one node to another node in the event a node fails, not to simply allow any random request to go to any node. Again, the J2EE container cluster configuration may or may not work. I can't find anything stating experimentation either way. However, if you meant licenses, then there are two business licenses associated with the Service Management Specialist: 1. AR System User 2. SRM Analyst / Admin Since SRM uses the AR System user for its license checks (i.e. there is no SRM application user license technically within the system), the Service Management Specialist would enable the entering of an additional count in the AR System User fixed/floating row while in the Add/Remove License console. The number would be a one-to-one correlation of the number of SM Specialist licenses purchased... so if you bought 5, you would enter (or add) 5 to the count of the AR System User license row. -David J. We've had to solve some serious problems on 7.6.4 recently relating to running the DB on a VM (Bad Performance and serious system outages). It's OK to run everything else in a VM, but the DB should rather be on a physical host if you want best performance reliability. If you use these servers for Dev or QA, I'd say, you can run the DB on a VM, but be prepared for bad performance. Alternatively, If you absolutely have to stick to these VM's, install Remedy directly on the SQL box and beef up the RAM to 16Gb or more. Then use the old APP VM for Mid-Tier AIE on 8Gb RAM. You won't gain extreme amounts of performance, but this split should give best possible performance within that specific configuration set. Because I did not do this, the installer could not create the service because it was trying to use an account that did not exist on the server (there was no local user for loginname, only a domain\loginname in the Administrators Group). Thanks to all for your comments on spellcheckers! -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arsl...@arslist.org] On Behalf Of Craig Carter Sent: Thursday, September 23, 2010 1:08 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Spell checker comments We use JSpell and we actually wrapped it with another dialog to make it easier to use. Usually, you have to add header code and footer code to every form that uses it and enter in the specific field IDs, etc. We wrapped it with a spell checker dialog so you can simply pass the text in and it passes it on to JSpell. After the spell check, you can choose to abandon the changes or accept them and push them back. It really simplified usage everywhere we were calling it since you simply perform a Windows Open action on your own form and pass in the field to check. JSpell is simply Javascript code and when we first received it, it actually had a bad line of code which I had to track down and fix. The company went out of business about a year after we purchased it so I don't know if it is still even available. We were told we no longer had to pay annual license fees (which were real cheap anyway and the initial cost was less than $500) once they went out of business. It's not real fancy but you can change the look and feel and you could easily customize it. It works pretty well on the midtier and we've been using it for about three years. We hope to gain valuable lessons in making our application more navigable. I am focusing on access via the Mid-Tier, as this seems to be where JAWS provides the best navigation tricks. This task is quite an experience as I read BMC documentation, goto JAWS and struggle with what really works. I have found a few deficiencies, but am in no way hitting all aspects of our application. I have found the document 'Designing BMC Remedy applications for Section 508 compliance.pdf' quite valuable and at times confusing. If anyone has blazed this path before me and generated helpful tips in navigating objects like the Results List, Tables and Menu Lists, would you be willing to share? I haven't approached BMC yet concerning issues I found; that generally never goes well ;) Thanks for your time. Careful though mine was set to https and when we installed the 7.5.00.004 User Tool it was unable to recognize an https web path (patch 003 and earlier did just fine) and would hang the user tool as soon as you hit a console or form with a flashboard. With version 7.1 you get the option when installing the mid-tier to use IIS, Tomcat alone or Apache and Tomcat or some other Web Server/Servlet engine combination. I presume the same is true for 7.5 and 7.6. When installing with IIS the installer adds an ISAPI dll into IIS this services the redirection from IIS to Tomcat for those pages that IIS does not know about i.e. .jsp. Its all very straightforward. Once installed you can use it directly without additional fiddling. There are some things you can tune which I would suggest you use. To use HTTPS on IIS install a script that traps the page not found message on HTTP and issue the redirect, there is loads of examples on the web. The question should really be why use IIS at all - Tomcat can be configured to accept HTTPS and encrypt the channel, also IIS/Tomcat is the worst combo for performance. Tomcat alone outperforms the combo by up to 20%. Re: Installing Secondary Server in Server Group
I guess I sort of agreebut I'm not sure about the email part. We have other applications that Have a load balancer and each has an email ability. For example, we have two servers, such as servera And serverb but if you try to access one you're vectored to the load balancer serverx automagically, so that you are never really able to get to a or b unless the load balancer is shut down It just seems that it would make sense to have duplicate servers that access a common database, and A common email backend It's good to hear about these issues since we may be doing this in the not too distant future, and there's A lack of gotchas to keep a person out of the minefields... -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arsl...@arslist.org] On Behalf Of Lyle Taylor Sent: Thursday, March 19, 2009 1:16 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Installing Secondary Server in Server Group Which server does e-mail or flashboards processing (not regular flashboards processing - that is, displaying flashboards - that happens in the mid-tier, but the processing that the flashboards server does) is determined by a server's server group ranking. If you've got things behind a load balancer and you have your e-mail engine getting to your AR servers through the load balancer, there's no guarantee that any of the e-mail engines will be hitting the AR server that is supposed to be processing e-mails, so e-mail processing may or may not work depending on which server your e-mail engine hits - in essence, you've just potentially broken the capability that a server group gives you for moving operations to another server if one of them goes down, etc. In addition, what if more than one e-mail engine hits the same server? However, if you have the e-mail engine running on all servers in the group, and they point to the server they're running on, whenever that server is supposed to do e-mail processing, you know that that e-mail engine will process e-mails, and the other ones won't. That way, you can leave them all running and get true automatic failover when you take down one of your servers. Does that make sense? Re: Suggestions wanted for backing up....
Thanks Joe. we're using a VM and have thought about using snapshots, but if the server fails then the snapshot Is gone also...unless we move the snapshot off to another sever.. but the gating factor for me is how long the Service desk is willing to be down if I have to rebuildand I estimate that it could take three or four days to do That, patch everything, etc. I think I'm going to be looking at something like Ghost that will image the server and everything. After imaging I can move the image to another server so it's relatively safe. A product like Acronis will allow me to make a Master backup and then ongoing differential backups, so that may be a good solution. From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arsl...@arslist.org] On Behalf Of Webster, Basil Sent: Wednesday, March 04, 2009 4:19 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Suggestions wanted for backing up ** Hi Richard, We have a similar situation. I have no idea of how Tivoli operates but we are using a network backup product called NetBackup. Having had the unfortunate experience of having to recover from a hardware failure, I got the bad news that the backup guys could not create a server in the state of the last successful backup, they could only dump data contained in the directories. So I had to do a full OS install with all the apps etc and them took specific data contained in the backups and used it, like the AR licensing, config etc. This took me nearly a week. To say that the business was not happy would be an understatement. There are a few virtual products availabe, we are now moving to the VMWare environment. This now brings along the possibilities of snap shots. This means that if your vm server instance dies, using the snap shot you basically have an image of it and it can be used to rebuild the exact server as it was (at the time of the snap shot). Having a snap shot is great but I believe that it requires the same space allocation that the original server has. This is where I am having a battle with my server guys. You could also look at server groups. Having more than one app server under a load balancer would allow you to operate on the balance of the servers if one was to become inoperable. It's a cash thing though. I have put the ball back in the businesses court requesting that they need to determine the max downtime of a critical service and then based on that, what are they prepared to pay to make it possible, or pay in penalties. I don't want to spend another two or Three days rebuilding everything if the MS server that hosts the vm's goes down. So, what should I be backing up? Best practices? Are There any good documents I should be reading to make the systems reasonably easy to recover? Thank you!! Interesting thought……since we have the applications on one server and the web stuff on another, is this still possible? Is there a reference you could recommend where I could read more about that? Joe From: Richard Copits richard.cop...@bwc.state.oh.us To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Sent: Wednesday, March 4, 2009 7:27:10 AM Subject: Re: Suggestions wanted for backing up ** Thanks Joe….. we’re using a VM and have thought about using snapshots, but if the server fails then the snapshot Is gone also…unless we move the snapshot off to another sever.. but the gating factor for me is how long the Service desk is willing to be down if I have to rebuild….and I estimate that it could take three or four days to do That, patch everything, etc. I think I’m going to be looking at something like Ghost that will image the server and everything. After imaging I can move the image to another server so it’s relatively safe. A product like Acronis will allow me to make a Master backup and then ongoing differential backups, so that may be a good solution. I have no idea of how Tivoli operates but we are using a network backup product called NetBackup. Having had the unfortunate experience of having to recover from a hardware failure, I got the bad news that the backup guys could not “create” a server in the state of the last successful backup, they could only dump data contained in the directories. It’s a cash thing though. I have put the ball back in the businesses court requesting that they need to determine the max downtime of a critical service and then based on that, what are they prepared to pay to make it possible, or pay in penalties. For web you just need to go to AR User Preferences and on Home Page tab set the Form Name as start page. For this you have to create entries in case profile does not exist. Modify all option can be used. 2. For User tool, you have to set the home page seperately on end user machines. For that you may send them the guidelines to configure the Home Page. Movement of SQL instance.....
I've been told that we will have to move our SQL database instance from one SQL server to another. From What I've read it looks like all I have to do is to bring down the Remedy server, edit the ar.cfg file and put the name of the new instance In in place of the old, then have the database folks move the instance. Is this true or have I missed something? We have 7.1 and separate app and web servers. However, it doesn't look like there are any changes/edits that I need to make on the web server.
