We are using Qlikview successfully with ODBC connection to ARS.  I will give
this one a try.  Other record types have been easily retrieved using the ODBC
SQL statments.

Rick,
All tasks are stored in TMS:Task. What reporting tool are you using?
BMC Analytics has the objects under the class, Change Management
Tasks. The join is done using a field called RootRequestInstanceID (I
think). You can do the same join by using Instance ID from the parent
Change if you are using a different tool. If you are solely reporting
on TMS:Task, you can probably do a LIKE search on the Parent request
with a prefix of CRQ.

Our goal is 1,000 votes.  We are VERY SHORT of that number.  Sadly this is
reflecting what was seen by Dan during the actual MVP voting this year.

If you want the ARSList MVP award to continue reply to the Bring back the
ARSList MVP for 2013 thread.  You only need to hit reply, enter YES in the

2012-10-24 Thread Rick Sharp
I've lived here for 10 years now, removed from Boston/Cape Cod after 4 years.

300+ days of sunshine each year.  Not it's not cold.  The sun warms it up, just
point west and south during the winter.  For reasonable rentals, there are
abundant.  A friend is leaving in Jan, and is renting his 3 bedroom home for
around 1300 per month.  It's about 5 years old, just north of the AF Academy,
and about 30 min or less from Peterson AFB.

Yea, temp gigs are a totally different animal.  Residence Inn in COS is about
$90/nt, less in Winter than Summer.  Flights to COS are also a bit more expense
because you can only get here from most/not all hubs.  From N-NJ, kinda
screwed, but it isn't too bad to fly to Denver and drive down.

I had a gig in NYC, the flight is so long I only came back every other weekend
and stretched it a bit on the return to get almost 3 days.

Cost of living really depends a lot on what you end up having to do when you
pick up that engagement and how long or short term it is..

*** Scenario 1 (which is the only one I have opted for so far)
I like to be back home in New Jersey every weekend as I really did not know
anyone in CO.. I worked on contracts ranging from 3 to 6 months.. This can be a
little expensive compared to other mid western states, as Denver happens to be
a place of touristic interests, which is why I think its not cheap to fly there
even if you make airline reservations well in advance.. Its always at an
average of about 100 to 150 bucks more than the same distance to most other
places that are not in high demand to travel to.. Hotels depending on how close
you are to Downtown Denver, may or may not be expensive. I have stayed at
corporate rates for as low as 119 a night to a high of near 200 a night - book
these in advance too as corporate rates tend to get sold out pretty quick - you
could always cancel if you do not need it later at no fee..

Dining out is fairly cheap compared to many places.. I used to buy a decent
Sushi / Sashimi dinner combo for less than 25 dollars which was quite a deal at
one of the most popular Sushi places in Denver. Or you can go fine dining to
that game food restaurant by the mountains and pay over 50 bucks a head.. So
its no more expensive than most other places in America depending on what you
choose to do.. Your average weekly cost in this scenario could go anywhere
between 1300 to 1900 depending on the time of the year. During the skiing
season, is when I have reimbursed close to 1900 a week for my weeks stay which
included Airlines, Hotels, Rental Car and Per Diem..

*** Scenario 2 (which I have never opted for because of its personal
inconvenience to me)
You temporarily relocate to Denver for the length of your engagement.. You
could rent a nice Condo or Townhouse not too far from Downtown (20 minutes
drive) at half the cost in rent as what you might rent its equivalent in New
Jersey or New York.. Yes I am talking about 1000 a month for a condo and maybe
under 1500 for a decent townhouse, and some of them may even come with cleaning
service for a marginally extra price.. In this scenario, if it’s a long term or
a permanent offer, you could even consider buying and I believe real estate is
inexpensive in many places in CO as compared to North Eastern states..

I agree with Rick.. I have been to CO and love it there, but the weather can be
so unpredictable even in the month of April.. It can begin at 8:00 with
sunshine and at 70 degrees F, and you could have 6 to 12 inches of snow by 6:00
PM – this actually happened a couple of years ago when I was there, and then
next morning by 9:00 there was no sign that it snowed.. But it’s a lot better
earlier in the year when you know it will be cold most of the time, and a
little later in the year where its hot almost all the time..

Retrieving Attachments from ARS DBs ?

2012-08-16 Thread Rick Sharp

Our SQL DBA is looking for best practice advice on how to retrieve attachments
in INC and CRQ records/work info entries.  On page 37 of the DB ref guide, it

Goal:  To retrieve documentation files that are part of work info entries, and
are in the ARS attachment data tables.

Environment:  ARS 7.02 and SQL 2K8

Has anyone done this in the past ?  Do you have an example of the SQL statement

AR Server License and HostID Question

2012-07-12 Thread Rick Sharp
** Hi All -

I am getting confusing information about the Remedy HostID for license keys. We
are running on Wintel 2K8 and VM ESX platform as a guest OS. The HostID that
shows up in the top right corner of the License screen is 00505688. In the
properties of the active NIC for the AR server, it reads: 0050568800FF. Does
Remedy interpret the FF as 00 in its HostID value? Our support partner is
telling me that we can enter any HostID into the NIC properties, which I don't
see as an available option.

We use the ability to route Approvals in CM based on Op and/or Prod Cats,
during Review and Implementation Phases. You have multiple options on the

Also, you can have multiple approvals in each phase as well. Just give it a

We have a production environment with multiple ARS and Web reports that have
been created over time by a variety of admins and users. We want to put
those reports on a Development environment for refinement and ultimately
move them back into Production and to a DR server.

When I export entries from the Production form: Report, the attachments
names change. When I import them to the DEV server using the Import Tool,
some of them fail to import and those that do import fail to run, showing an
error that the definition is not available. The attachments appear in the
record however, many of the imported definitions have a zero byte count when
using either ARX or XML formats. I've also tried to export the records from
the forms: ReportCreate and Report Definition. Importing those is also
unsuccessful.

I've read all the (too many) manuals and they are just not intuitive for
this process. Does anyone have a step-by-step method for exporting and
importing reports?

Thanks;

Subject: SRM -- just asking ---for the impossible.

So you have Multi-tenecy and you have multiple companies..
and you have multiple requests...

Boss says:: I need you to add a field to 4 or the 10 companies forms, and
that should be easy right ?
Remedy teams says...: see you in a month..
Why? you are now manipulating 800 SRM's AOT, PDT's..

Question: is there a management tool, that BMC has to allow a field to be
created and mapped easily to many ? and do all the data manipulation,
without a 12 min admin per: (none that we know of)

Question: is there some other free tool out there that can do it?

would not this be a good idea to have?

Also:: the ability to make 1 SRM, AOT, PDT, QA and share it with SOME
companies, not ALL companies.. Nope.. again.. Global only otherwise
manually granular specific.
Each has to be specific..

Now we are up to some 1350 SRM's, and it appears we shall soon be at 2500
SRM's.. Appears to be growing quickly.. BMC (we can't prevent change, but
we can adapt motto -- Where is that? again)

not complaining, just wondering, pondering.. about future.. OFSRM ..
PLEASE..

I do not want to hear from Kinetic, I know, I know..

Re: Crystal Server 2008

2012-01-20 Thread Rick Sharp
You need Crystal licensing to run in ITSM. We experienced the same and run
from our dedicated Crystal server and publish Remedy reposts from that source
outside of Remedy. Unless there are other ideas from the group to get around
Crystal BOXI licensing.

I am able to run the reports (using the ARSystem ODBC Driver) from the CSM. I
logged in as a user, loaded a Crystal Report definition, pointed it to the
correct database driver and it ran fine. What I cannot do is run the reports
from the ITSM application.

Thank you for your help.

Would you like to see the user tool come back? (don't need comments:: just
yes or no: OR yes yes yes to show your support is allowed.. lol)

yes or no:

I am not saying it is going to happen: I am not giving any indication it

Work Info Notes Entries Limited to 255 Characters v7.604

2011-12-23 Thread Rick Sharp
Why in the world did BMC limit the Notes field in WorkInfo records to 255
characters per record?  This is maddening for our IT users who didn't have this
limitation in our 7.0x world.  The workaround is to email the INC or CRQ with
the information record that exceeds 255 characters.  Does anyone else have the
same problem and what did you do to resolve this poor design, please ?

ARS Tomcat Slowdowns are Crippling Us......HELP !

2011-12-15 Thread Rick Sharp
Hi All

We have a new ARS 7.604 instance with incredible slow MidTier performance every
3 days. Tomcat sucks up 3GB+ RAM and 53% CPU (today) and cripples the MidTier.
Restart Tomcat and all is fine for 2 days. Unacceptable to our 200 IT users and
is killing us. Our base of 4800 end users touches Remedy via our Kinetic front
end, which is never an issue; just the MidTier for IT Staff.

Any help is much appreciated

Specifics:

We are running Tomcat for ARS and Tomcat for Kinetic, as separate services. The
ARS Tomcat runs away with Memory and cripples us at 3GB, while CPU is fine with
its service. Kinetic's Tomcat is fine.

Re: SRM - Colors 'Branding'?

2011-10-28 Thread Rick Sharp
David -

We opted to use KineticData for this and other inflexibilities and to take
advantage of its powerful Request and Survey Mgt functions. Their tool is
friendly and intuitive. I'd be glad to show you our instance(s) if you drop me
a line. We can do a http:\\join.me next week.

Sorry to hear of your dilemma, but I am sure you can bring your service items
to life very quickly, and use your CSS brand and color schemas very easily.

Subject: SRM - Colors 'Branding'?

We're near launch of a new Remedy system. We plan to use the SRM
(ServiceRequestConsole/enduser) as the 'front door' for all our tickets.

We'd like to be able to do some tweaks on it, to 're-brand' it to look more
like our other web pages. This would involve such things as logo, colors,
banner, footer.

We've asked around and been told the only thing that can be changed is the
logo-graphic (top-left corner). I just find it difficult to believe that
other companies aren't doing more in the way of custom 'skins' for the SRM
user-interface.

Does anyone have any suggestions they can offer regarding how we might
accomplish this?

I have been tasked with coming up with some solutions for how to display a
Remedy dashboard in the NOC. What kinds of solutions are you all using? I
thought that the easiest way would be to simply display the mid-tier web page.
Is that workable? They want the data to be pretty much real time.

I'm having some trouble creating services on the SRM application. It seems to
be pretty extensive as far as all of the steps involved in getting services to
appear on the console page. The Admin Guide is very convoluted and doesn't have
many screenshots to help me understand the entire process of setting these up.
If anyone has any suggestions or documentation on how to do this a little
easier, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
