Hi,
Are you bound to MS Windows + SQL Server ?
Running Linux Oracle Express, you can build a full VM running with 8GB of
ram, 2 vCPU 35GB of hard disk space.

 Hi,

If you turn down your SQL memory (limit to say 1.5GB) you can run a full
stack install on around 8GB although it maybe a little sluggish at times
(data loads, etc). Best also to up the default JVM values allocated to Mid
 Tier to improve performance.

 ** **

For a Production system, 12GB is needed on the AR Application servers (due
to the number of additional plug-ins) to successfully run all the
components without issue e.g. AI, NE, Recon, FTS, etc. This is now higher
than the usual 8GB RAM for previous versions.

 ** **

I did a Sandbox system for a huge BMC customer last year where we had
separated out the AR Application and had 2 Mid Tier servers - one for the
ITSM Suite, and the second (a backup MT) housing Analytics and Dashboards.

 ** **

I would suggest a separate server if wanting to put in
Analytics/Dashboards as they are memory hogs as well.

 Hi everyone,

I am about to request a VMWARE built for our Remedy 8.1 POC.

I see the following recommendation in the installation manual but would
like to have some thoughts from anyone who did this and if they faced any
 issues with performance.

 Hardware Specifications
 ___
 1 server:

 Infrastructure Stack components

 OS Windows 2008 R2 (64-bit)
 Database MS-SQL 2008 Enterprise Edition SP 1 (64-bit)
 Application server Tomcat 6.0.26 (64-bit)
 Web server Apache 2.2 (32-bit)
Reporting engine BusinessObjects XI 3.1 SP3 or 4.0

 ARS/ITSM Components / Integration
 _
 BMC Remedy AR System server
 BMC Atrium CMDB
 BMC Remedy ITSM
 BMC Service Level Management
 BMC Service Request Management
 BMC Knowledge Management

The numbers look slightly exuberant.. Do you need all 4CPUs and 12GB to
get this working? Can you still have the whole application installed and
running will less than what is recommended by BMC?

 Many thanks in advance,

 Hello all,

I'm coming to you after a rather big incident on my client's production

Some filters create a list of users to notify of a certain action. It then
removes the current user's login name from the list. Anyhow, there was a
bug in the list that left a trailing 0 after the name of one user. When a
few days ago he triggered a notification, the list had a 0 in it. Which
is the id of the Public group. So our server started to send an email to
160k+ users. Thanks to a full tablespace, only 36k emails where sent.***

The bug itself is corrected, but my client would like us to find a
definitive protection against this kind of problems.

The only thing I can think of for now, is having a script that would watch
the AR System Email Messages. If it has more than X outbound email to send,
then interrupt Email Engine. I don't even know how I could do that in a
 clean way.

 Any thoughts ?

Hi,
You should also try and use something like Wireshark along with your 3rd
party tool, and forward the result of the dump to a network expert when you
get this timeout. I bet he will see some incomplete TCP streams or other

Hoping to get some help here. The client has a web service from an external
system that they consume. For the most part it works well but sporadically
the response takes a while to come back, which results in the

occurs, the Plugin server bounces. There's no rhyme or reason to which
requests take a while to respond and which ones are for the most part
instantaneous. The same request that failed can then be sent through in no
 time without any issues.

I've tried testing the web service through a 3rd party utility and I see the
same delay in responses periodically. However, it seems that in Remedy that
delay in response crashes the Plugin process. Raising the timeout limit dodes
not make a difference as it just takes longer to come back with that message.

Heres' some info about the system

My thought was to play around with the Plugin-Filtr-API-Threads setting. They
currently have it set at 10 20. Any help would be appreciated.

 Dan,

What all of my business classes and reading of the Wall Street Journal
have taught me is that you need to have the plans in place before you make
 an offer on a company.

So I am sure that they had the plans drawn out of what they will be doing

And if Oracle was part of it, they reached out to them as well (either

I just want Remedy to be around for another 10 or so years, then I can

Since it's incredibly fun to speculate on this situation, I'll offer up:

 - Bain will look at the profitability of the various pieces/business units
 - Mainframe, Service Management, etc...
 - They'll tear out the ugly pieces and get them in the hands of someone
who can use them (Elliot's involvement indicates that Compuware might be
 involved)
 - They'll take the profitable pieces and put probably keep them with the
newly private BMC that needs to invest in ESM.

So, I'm thinking... Patrol and it's ilk will end up with Compuware since
it will give them a larger stack of monitoring tools.
Mainframe/Batch Management - IBM? That would make sense. The new Z's are
coming... sure would help to pick up some nice new batch management

 Tivoli product line.
Service Management - BMC grew the business significantly (per the
financials yesterday)... and they need to transition to PaaS (for the
Enterprise, that's Remedy) to grow dramatically. That will require
investment and innovation (this is an optimistic scenario for ARlist)...
and an AppExchange like community (this group) to develop new offerings
that are needed to compete with ServiceNow (such as HR Call Center,
Facilities Management, etc...). This will require some heavy ARsystem work

We have 5 test environments, so far have upgraded 3 without any issues -

We had an outage slot agreed with the business (8 hours) and ran through

Put servers into admin mode, restart one (shut down the other). We didn't
take them out of server group mode (which I'm starting to think was a

Upgrade ran through (it takes 4 hours per server), then towards the end
it claimed it had failed. Yet the AR Services were running.

What wasn't working? Plugin server (and therefore a lot of our

took 3 minutes, and Oracle could be repointed to its backup database).

When we tried to invoke a web service, we received an ARERR 9130 Invalid

The web services and code that we had in place was unchanged, and the
same code base had worked without any problems on all of our test

The installation log had only one obvious error :

Hi,

I would go for a single staging form. The number of web services itself
would not be a concern.
On the staging form, you would have to be very careful about how you name
and group all the common filters into guides (checkings values, fetching or
evaluating mandatory fields ...), and separate them from all the module
specific workflow. But I think you have much to gain with this solution
compared to the development of 3 separate staging forms.
Also, you won't have to duplicate all the utility workflow like archiving,
error handling, maybe a configuration form an admin console ...

We also had some problems with FTS on 7.6.04 sp2 and on Windows

At a time, search wasn't working anymore (for example in MFS) and you had
a plugin error (can't remember the arerror).
I left the project before BMC support found a solution but I gave the
admins a script that killed the FTS plugin (java process) and armonitor
relaunched it immediately (less than 2 seconds) and search worked again
 right away.
Not perfect but it's a way to fast resolve this problem. Perhaps it should
be linked to a live log analysis (?).

Anyway, the thing is that FTS is a Java process, the way I identify it is
via the command line where you can find pluginsvr/fts (or something like
that), you know it's that java process.
Then the script killed it and let armonitor do his job.

Here is the script, it's in powershell for Windows but perhaps it'll give
you a hint for your environment if it's not windows (or a kill should do

Essentially we can not get FTS to remain stable. It will always
eventually crash and need to be restarted, which essentially means
restarting ARS since its' a plugin.

We have Suse linux servers in the server group that are VM's. The mount
points where the application is installed is pretty fast NAS (SAN? one of
the two) and the index files live here as well.

BMC has told us - by way of Lucene, which is the underlying product - that
the actual mechanism that writes to SAN/NAS drives is not good for the
types of file operations which FTS does in order to do it's work.
Essentially we always end up with some form of file lock or read error. In
short, you have to have an actual physical drive hooked up the box to make
 this work.

That's NOT happening in our environment.

Essentially there's a problem - BMC is saying they support VM's, but FTS
can use virtual disks - and it's not really BMC's fault so much as the
 fault of the underlying engine.

Anyone else run into this? Heck, we are getting FTS errors at times when
it's been turned OFF for weeks.

Hi,
Have you checked the actual content of your /etc/rpc file ?
If you install as root, the installer will modify the file by itself.
If you install as a regular user, the installer will ask you to do it as
root.

added the list of arserverd RPC ports to the /etc/rpc file in order for
portmapper to work. This was never done, portmapper is working and ARS
starts without issue. No TCD port has been specified.

We are installing a new ARS server with the same OS config but on that
server portmapper does not work without adding the arserverd ports to the
 /etc/rpc file.

Trying to figure out what could be different between the hosts that would
 cause portmapper to not work.

 Thank you

Hi,

There is a short guide here with some examples focused on the use of

Re: How to add items to a dropdown list (selection list)

2013-01-07 Thread Sylvain YVON
Hi,

We were just looking into this with Laurent this morning for another
requirement. The cleanest solution is clearly Misi's.
There just two drawbacks :
- you have to manage a table for your temporary records (= delay,
clustering, i/o ...) or use a temporary table if your DBMS allows it
- it implies a delay on the client-side

Now there is a client-side only solution with JavaScript (yes, AGAIN :p).
You need a dummy character menu, named EmptyMenu in my example. Attach it
to your field.
The following code must be run from a Run Process action in an active link,
and re-creates the dummy menu with the values you pass to the object
constructor :
javascript new
ARMenu(EmptyMenu,{novals:false,mval:[{l:val1,v:null},{l:val2,v:null}]});

I can't test it right now, but this code _should_ work to add an item :
javascript window.ARMenus[EmptyMenu].mval.push({l:label,v:value});
new ARMenu(EmptyMenu,window.ARMenus[EmptyMenu]);

On Sun, Jan 6, 2013 at 12:30 PM, Misi Mladoniczky m...@rrr.se wrote:

When you Add stuff, you must create records in a form, that will later
be displayed in your search-menu. Use the Push-Fields action to create
 records.

Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://rrr.se

I need to create the following:

  1. A button named AddList with label Add to List.

  2. A Character field called eg new_item.

  3. A dropdown list initially empty (ie no dropdown items)

The user enters text into the new_item field and clicks on AddList
button to add the text item in new_item to the dropdown.

I have scoured the docs and can't quite work it out.

Re: Real Number Format Issue

2012-11-07 Thread Sylvain YVON
I use JavaScript too much, I know I do. But until AR System/MT comes
with a better data validator system, I will use JavaScript regexp to
validate/unvalidate.
The idea is to add onkeyup listeners that call these functions. They
check the current value for the field, and call an active link guide
if it's valid, another if it's not. Now you can do pretty much any
check you want.

No, that's the weird thing...I had this requirement specifically when people
where typing into the field, they just sometimes fat finger things and put
special characters into the numeric fields and wanted me to throw errors
when it happened. And, the weirdest thing is that the system throws NO
errors when you do it, it simply considers the input invalid and truncates at
the invalid error, so if you entered 123$5, everything past the $ gets
truncated and your actual value in the field is 123.

  David,
The problem is that if you have a run-if firing on a qual of something
  similar to

And throw an error if true, you will find that the filter never fires

**
Atrium Integrator in server group environment and multiple Carte server support

* BMC AR System server group is supported thus, allowing high
availability installation of Atrium Integrator.

* The Atrium Integrator server can be used in a server group
environment to distribute the jobs across multiple Carte servers. In a
BMC Remedy AR System server group environment, you can schedule your
jobs to run from different Carte servers. This enables you to run
multiple jobs at one time and also achieve load balancing. For more

2012-10-08 Thread Sylvain YVON
Hi,

I'm no SQL Server expert ;) But you do have a snapshot functionnality
that may be the source of your problems. Disabling or at least having
it tuned could also benefit the whole application. You can use WITH
NOLOCK with your select statement to force it at run time.

You have the equivalent in AR System configuration with
Select-Query-Hint: NOLOCK in ar.cfg, see configuration guide.

Re: ITSM 7.6 - Different view's set for different screen size monitors.

2012-10-05 Thread Sylvain YVON
Hi,

You can change some containers (panels views) to a fill layout.
But it takes a lot of work to redesign your screens because not every
field type can or should be resized to fill a panel.
I think there is no better way to understand and see the limitations
than to try it yourself on a new test form :
- in the view properties, change the layout to fill
- add a panel holder, and change the min and max height and width
- change the 2 default panels inside the panel holder to fill
layout, and change the min and max height and width
- place different objects in your panels to understand how MT renders them

Usually, we found here that we don't want the input fields to be
placed into fill panels or panels filling a container.
The best objects to fill a panel are table fields (list, tree cells).

Re: Learn Remedy Script - Reg

Hi,
A few years ago, before there was a DMT, I had a similar requirement.
So I wrote an SQL script that searched every known character field
(from the FIELD table) on every form for references to known login
IDs. The script took a night to execute.
Then, from the result, I generated a list of update commands to be
executed for each login.

Not sure if it's still a good solution, now that we have the DMT. How
much time does it really take to run, have you tried on a test server

increase the number of LIST threads.

Is this correct or am I wrong?

If your programs only push data into a table, you can use an

 Hi everyone ,

Would anyone who has done something similar and encountered himself having
the situation could give us some hints on how to resolve this issue with
minimum effort i.e. without making any code changes.
We have a set of Java API programs which connect to an ARS server and create
some forms data. These scripts read a password from a flat file among other
stuff (for easy maintenance so to say). So without making any changes to any
of the Java code, is there an option of encrypting the password which the
java could still read and pass to the API call which established the remedy
 connection?
There are two places where I see the password references in every java
 script.
 remedypassword = prop.getproperty(remedypass);
 setpassword(remedypassword);
This by the way is a 7.1 server running on a Sun Solaris 5.10 and an Oracle
 10.
Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

I think that if you give us more details about what you what to do, what's
the objective, why do you want to do it, ... we would be able to provide
you the best way to achieve it, and also advise you about the why you are
 solving your problem.

 ** **

For instance, If you want to create 100 tickets attached to the same CI
because there is a list of operations to be done on the CI and each task
must be assigned to a different support group, a Service request or a tree
of taskes can be a better choice.

 ** **

Or if you want to create a 100 tickets of the same issue to multiple CI
because it is a generalized incident, maybe one incident related to all
CI's can be a better choice.

Assuming you are talking about exactly the same CI for each ticket,
templates can help streamline the entering of tickets, and I believe you
can have them set a CI, though we have not used that aspect of the template

incident individually. I am not aware of a cloning feature in ITSM 7.6.04
that creates a new ticket based on the current ticket, which is a function
we also had in our previous Remedy ticketing system.

There may also be tricks that developers can do behind the scenes to
create a bunch of tickets that I am not aware of, but I’ll let the

This is my first post although I’ve been reading for a while.

I need to open 100+ incidents that are all essentially the same but need
each individual one to have a relationship to a pre-populated CI. Is there
an easy way to do this?

I am on a new 7.6.04 instance and am sure at my previous company we had

Hi,

We had similar issues in a similar context. Using Fiddler, we found
some http/304 (not modified) answers from the local proxy even to
some call backs. We forced Apache to add a no-cache header to all
files but images to resolve the problem.

As for automating the flush of MT cache, it is possible but you really
don't want to do that as a definitive solution. :) It has a huge
impact on performances for all users for at least 10 minutes.
To automate flush cache anyway, on Windows, you have document on BMC
Communities describing the steps.
On Linux, you can do it with wget (I have yet to create a document for
this one).

 Josh:

It’s not clear to me whether the cache directories you’ve already deleted
are server side (i.e. mid-tier) or user side (web browser) or both. In our
7.6.04 SP2 installation, we’ve found that if we flush only the mid-tier
cache without also having the users clear their browser caches (and they
need to FULLY clear their browser caches by closing ALL open browser
windows, marking every possible option for clearing in IE – our
site-standard browser, then going in and deleting any leftover files - I can
send you the full procedure if you use IE at your site), then behavior
similar to what you describe happens. We’ve particularly seen behavior like
this when we upgraded the ITSM application itself, but I would recommend
doing it even for a mid-tier-only upgrade.

It’s like both the server side and user side caches need to be fully
refreshed in order for everything to work right. And if you do this and
still have issues, you can be confident that the problem isn’t being
obscured or caused by caching conflicts. We’ve found that in going to ITSM,
we’ve had to become very familiar with the web browser – how its settings
affect behavior in ITSM and how to clear its cache properly so that you get
 a “clean” pull from ITSM.

 Good luck!

Re: Stop/Activate Escalations

2012-09-12 Thread Sylvain YVON
Hi,

You can do it with the API like LJ suggested, with the driver program
if you just want to script, or in a program of your own.

If you open ar.h on your server, you can see all the server settings
you can change :
[...]
#define AR_SERVER_INFO_DISABLE_ESCALATIONS  143  /* int  - 0 - enabled
 */   /*1
- not enabled */
[...]

Note the number 143.

The driver programs offer a CLI to use the AR System API. For
example, to disable escalations on a server, simply launch driver
and use the following commands :

Command: init
INITIALIZATION

   ARInitialization results
ReturnCode: OK
Status List : 0 items

Command: log
Control record:
   Authentication string () :
User name () : your login
   Password () : your password
   Locale[.charSet] () :
   Time zone () :
   Server () : your server

Command: ssp
SET SERVER PORT
The port number of server (0): your TCP port, if needed
Using private socket? (0):

   ARSetServerPort results
ReturnCode: OK
Status List : 0 items

Command: ssi
SET SERVER INFO
Number of server info operations (0): 1
Server info list entry
Operation (1-334) (1): 143
Datatype Null/Key/Int/Real/Char/Diary/Enum/Time/Bitmask/Byte/Decimal/attach/
 currency/date/timeofday/join/trim/control/Table/Column/ulong/
 coords/view/display (0-14, 30-34, 40-43) (0): 0

   ARSetServerInfo results
ReturnCode: OK
Status List : 0 items

Now you can easily script this by writing all your answers, with the
blank lines, into a text file, and run driver commands.txt.

Re: How to monitor Approval Server

2012-09-10 Thread Sylvain YVON
Hi,

Previous answer is already very complete, but you could go a little
further if you have some time :
- create a supervision form
- create a dummy approval process
- create an escalation that executes a new details command for this
process every X minutes
- if you find the generated signature, close it; else, send an alert

On Mon, Sep 10, 2012 at 10:29 AM, patchsk vamsi...@gmail.com wrote:

Unlike email engine, approval server is not a separate service, so you
cannot monitor a service or a tcp port.
It is built in as a plugin. The components involved are approval plugin,
 dispatcher, application pending entries.
The way approval server works is remedy workflow creates an entry in the
Application Pending form when it needs approval server to do something.
There is a separate daemon called the dispatcher.
The dispatcher looks at the entries in the application pending form and it
invokes the respective plugins to process the request. The entries have a
field called category, which tells what plugin that it needs to invoke.
Once the dispatcher processes the request the application pending entry gets
 deleted.
In an ideal scenario there should not be any entries in the application
 pending.
So you can monitor the data in this table at sql level or remedy api level
and if there are records older than certain time threashold that is your
alert that something is not working right in the system.
The way to restart approval server is when armonitor started initially there
is a .lck file created in the logs folder. This file contains the approval
 process id.
You can have a shell program to kill that process and delete the .lck file
and armonitor will automatically restarts approval server.

Re: Thoughts regarding a separate DB for custom DB objects

2012-09-07 Thread Sylvain YVON
We did that here on Oracle for a custom 7.5 app with one ARSystem and
one Utility schemas. The utility schema contains all the temporary
tables, procedures and packages for maintenance and imports (of users,
entities, ...). This is very handy because this is all temporary stuff
that we can afford to loose and restore a week old backup, not like AR
System data that is so expensive to replicate.
That said, we chose to create the views and materialized views needed
by ARS workflow inside the AR System schema simply because we don't
see a value add in using the utility schema. I mean, if you create
views, you will probably create a view form in AR System anyway. If
you use a View Form based on a complexe view, that uses the data
contained in your AR System tables, are you sure that storing the view
in a separate schema/DB doesn't add an overhead (like authentication,
network loop, etc) ? I don't have the answer, maybe it depends on the
DB engine you use ?

I would like to get some input on something I have been thinking about
recently. I am considering creating a new DB on the same DB server as the
ARSystem DB. This DB would be right next to the ARSystem DB but would house
all of the custom DB work we do. My thought is to have all custom tables,
views, stored procedures, functions, etc. in new DB which would ideally
leave everything in the ARSystem DB created, maintained and modified via the
AR System API or BMC installers. Basically I am picturing a layer of
abstraction or a library of custom objects if you will. Maybe more like a
different namespace or data set for those CMDB gurus out there.

As it is right now in our very customized 7.5 ARS DB all custom tables,
views, etc. are all intermixed with the ARS maintained objects. We try to
keep our objects lumped together by naming convention but just when my team
starts using the same convention a different DBA (for example) comes along
and uses their favorite convention. If we all agree to only make changes to
the custom DB then naming convention is not as important (DBAs usually ask
which DB do you need something not so much “what is your naming
 convention?”).

Another considerations is portability of the ARSystem DB. Right now when we
refresh our production DB to another environment there are things like
different linked server references that need to be updated, object owners,
etc. All objects in the custom DB would have the same names between
environments (Dev, QA, Prod). With all of the custom objects in their own
DB we can move ARSystem DBs between environments and as long as the custom
DB is configured correctly for the environment no changes are needed to any
 of ARSystem DB objects.

Our new “out of the box” ITSM 7.6.04 system does not have any custom DB work
done yet but I know it is only a matter of time before the need arises as we
transition between old and new systems. If there are advantages and no
major negative results to this architecture I would like to set this up
while we are still out of the box.

Can anybody think of any negative (or positive) effects of this approach? I
am figuring because it still on the same DB server that there should not be
 much performance impact.

 Thanks!

 Jason

 Greetings

 Environment
 ARSystem 7.6.4 Patch 2
 Mid-Tier 7.6.4 Patch 3
 SQL Server 2005
 MS Server 2008
 Submitter Mode Locked

 Here is the issue

We have the system configured so that anyone can request On behalf of
using the SRM tool for anyone else. In our 7.5 environment we never had any
 issues. It works like this

Joe submits a ticket on behalf of Karen no problem
Kevin submits a new ticket on behalf of Karen we receive the error
Joe submits a second ticket for Karen no problem

The issue appears to be with the ENT:Enttitlement Generate QUAL/CACHE form,
the first person creating on behalf of creates a new entry so there is no
problem, the second; however, receives the error when OTB workflow attempts
 to update this record.

The workflow was identical in 7.5 and it updated the record in the form
without any problems. According to BMC 7.6.4 documentation, An individual
with a BMC Remedy AR System Read license can act on-behalf-of another
individual, group, or company. . This would lead me to believe it should
still work with SRM even though users without write licenses can not
normally update a record in a form. Has anyone else seen this issue?
