and the wondrous hand of the Lord appeared in the sky moments ago... As Venus hung there, for even my eyes to see this early morning... I could not help but feel a great sense of peace, knowing that God has all things under control. As the lights broke through the darkness, I was reminded that we all should have hope for a better tomorrow. Thank you Lord for another day! Kevin Brown ** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
[AsburyPark] Christian Conservative Report of Presidencial Candidates
October 21, 2007 Religious Right Divides Its Vote at Summit By _MICHAEL LUO_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/l/michael_luo/index.html?inline=nyt-per) WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 — After an earnest appeal for acceptance from _Rudolph W. Giuliani_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/g/rudolph_w_giuliani/index.html?inline=nyt-per) , Christian conservatives ended their two-day summit here Saturday still divided about which of the Republican presidential candidates to marshal their collective might behind. _Mitt Romney_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/r/mitt_romney/index.html?inline=nyt-per) edged out _Mike Huckabee_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/h/mike_huckabee/index.html?inl ine=nyt-per) in the straw poll at the Values Voter Summit. But questions were raised about the way the voting was conducted — votes were permitted to be cast online as far back as August — and even top leaders said there did not appear to be any consensus. “I don’t think the question is anywhere close to settled,” said _Gary L. Bauer_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/b/gary_l_bauer/index.html?inline=nyt-per) , an influential Christian conservative leader and former Republican candidate himself in 2000. “I think it’s going to play out over the next several months.” Out of 5,775 votes cast, Mr. Romney won 27.6 percent; Mr. Huckabee, 27.1 percent; _Ron Paul_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/p/ron_paul/index.html?inline=nyt-per) , 15 percent; _Fred D. Thompson_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/t/fred_thompson/index.htm l?inline=nyt-per) , 9.8 percent. Mr. Giuliani finished second to last, with less than 2 percent of the vote, and Senator _John McCain_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/m/john_mccain/index.html?inline=nyt-p er) of Arizona finished last among the nine candidates. The Romney campaign trumpeted the victory, but there was only a smattering of applause in the auditorium when his name was announced and the event’s organizers cautioned against his deriving any kind of mandate from the results. Mr. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, delivered an address Friday laden with policy commitments, but he faces continued skepticism about his Mormon faith, which he addressed only in passing in his speech. He has also been criticized for his relatively recent conversion to an abortion opponent. The 2,500 attendees of the summit will now return to their churches and grass-roots organizations to weigh their choices. It is clear many are charged up about Mr. Huckabee, and there is at least some support for Mr. Romney and others, but many questions still remain. Whatever the outcome of the weekend, Mr. Giuliani’s appearance was one of the most anticipated moments of the campaign. Like past presidential candidates who addressed their harshest critics with direct talk, he had the potential to create a signature moment for his campaign by strolling directly into the maw of the religious conservative movement. Of all the candidates who appeared, Mr. Giuliani, a former New York City mayor, had the most to overcome, considering his support for abortion rights and gay rights and scrutiny about his personal life. Yet, like other candidates who spoke, he drew a standing ovation from the crowd after his speech in which he invoked Christian inclusiveness, common values and his personal faith. He issued a litany of promises meant to convey that he would not be their enemy if elected president. He was followed to the podium a short while later by Mr. Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor and a Baptist minister, who drew repeated boisterous standing ovations. Mr. Huckabee’s speech, full of his trademark quips, adept use of Bible stories and red-meat declarations about faith and values, had the feel at times of a Pentecostal tent revival. Mr. Giuliani spoke for about 40 minutes, twice his allotted time. The response was gracious and even warm, despite his own acknowledgment that members of the audience probably had serious differences with him. Nevertheless, he highlighted his willingness to be forthright and cast himself as more principled than his primary opponents, insisting he would not bend and sway to the political winds. Mr. Giuliani took a thinly veiled shot at his rival, Mr. Romney, whose campaign has been vigorously courting social conservatives but has battled skepticism about his authenticity. “Isn’t it better that I tell you what I really believe, instead of pretending to change all of my positions to fit the prevailing winds?” Mr. Giuliani asked, drawing murmurs of approval and applause from the audience. Mr. Giuliani talked about his Roman Catholic upbringing, attendance of parochial schools and even
[AsburyPark] Ballot Questions
New Jersey voters will decide four public questions during this November's election _ the most submitted to voters by the state since 1995. Voters will be asked whether to: - Permanently dedicate all money earned from last year's sales tax increase to property tax relief. - Approve borrowing $450 million for stem cell research. $ Approve borrowing $200 million for open space preservation. $$$ -Revise language outlining when voting rights can be denied by deleting from the state Constitution the phrase idiot or insane person and replacing it with the phrase person who has been adjudicated by a court of competent jurisdiction to lack the capacity to understand the act of voting. I have always voted yes to preserving open space, but lately I can't help but wonder if it is merely one more legal slush fund for the crooks to keep on lining their old suits. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Parking for 45,000?
Excerpt: Despite the industry's attendance declines, Monmouth has managed to keep its average daily attendance steady over the last decade, with 8,902 for the regular meet, which concluded on Sept. 2. Weekend crowds often top 14,000, almost twice as many people as Belmont Park typically attracts. Much of that has to do with how Monmouth has successfully marketed itself as an attractive place not only for gamblers, but also for horse lovers and for families looking for a pleasant afternoon out. Track officials estimate that 45,000 people will attend on Oct. 27 when eight Breeders' Cup races will be run. A crowd of 25,000 is expected on Friday, when the racing program will include three new Breeders' Cup races. [AsburyPark] 911 911 911 911...........
One major crime related problem in Asbury Park is that we have our own private 911 center, instead of merging with the county 911 center. So instead of spending money to put more cops and horses on the streets, we use it to staff an inadequate 24 hour call center with all the fancy equipment that this involves. Redundancy? In addition, being part of the county system puts another set of eyes on what is happening in Asbury Park. It's crime and it's policing as well. Just think how these county dispatchers could link crimes that are happening outside of Asbury Park to ones happening inside Asbury Park. I.e. The such and such drug gang did so and so in Neptune at 10:30 p.m. and then did such and such in Asbury Park at midnight. I think it would make it much easier to catch the criminals this way. I always find it such a joke that we are in so much of a financial crisis, yet we maintain the fire department and the police departments in a fashion that no other well heeled town with lots of money to waste would even consider doing. Hinge [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh some level, I agree, but the police aren't doing sureillence, and aren't making arrests. How many phone calls does it take for them to get the message. And, when a concerned for their safety citizen like myself contacts the PD, worried about the kids that I just reported, and they don't even bother to ask my name, that's also a problem. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] This morning in Library Square Park - Hypodermic needle
So, this morning during a dog walk in the park, I came upon a new addition...a discarded INTACT hypodermic needle. There are also 3 empty drug bags. Now I'm really on a mission. I called the PD, gave my name, and full report. They sent 2 cruisers over, and I got my camera and took pics of the things I described. Upon arrival, the first officer said Sir, this is Asbury Park, we have a lot of bad people wandering around Um...Duh. I described how this is a daily occurence, and something has to change. I told the officers about how the park is dark at night, and pointed out how the lights are broken. They seemed surprised to hear about that. I told them my theory about how I believe the lights we're destroyed by kids prompted by the local drug lords. Then one of the officers said this We don't have enough officers in the city, and that's one of our biggest problems So, here we have an officer acknowledging what we already know...our PD needs help. They are even asking for it. One of the officers bagged up the needle. I have pics I'll post here later today or tomorrow. I'm going to try and meet with the mayor, and I'm thinking about calling News 12 to see if they would be interested in doing a story about this. Anybody else have thoughts on what we should do? I, for one, won't just be posting here anymore. I'm taking this to a different level now. Oh, finally, I ran into a friend who also walks his dog in the park. He concurred about the drug bags and other things he sees, and he's sick of it too. So it Calvin across the street from the park. My other dog walking friend lamented the loss of the park benches that used to exist there, before they were destroyed. This has got to stop. The whole experience is a microcosm of what's going on in our city in general. Yahoo! Jack, Are you serious? I've said and so has others, that the Mayor, was born and raised here, educated here, is a veteran, having served honorably, is known by his peers, highly respected by the same and while having a message, still only has one vote! It sometimes appears that he is not outspoken, but he fervently works behind the scenes, is a child advocate, husband and father. He was the highest vote getter, making him the choice for Mayor, while the Deputy Mayor, Mr. Bruno, also born and raised here, a bit more assertive and aggressive than Mr. Sanders, made for two native born, home grown officials, in AP. You can't get more qualified than that! My opinion. I believe in my heart that they and the other three men, want a better Asbury Park. That said, we don't always agree on how to get it. I don't know where Mr. Johnson was born or James Keady, but they are legitimate residents, as well. Mr. Loffredo is/was from Neptune, but has been a resident of AP, for some time and is a homeowner. I highly respect him, personally. I don't always agree, with any of them, but I have been misinformed about issues also. What I'm saying is, I give them the benefit of the doubt. I can be wrong too! Sometimes, I think, we are a bit harsh on them, but it is believed that in all politics, those in power, sometimes feel, that their constituents, don't NEED or HAVE to know, everything! I say, the more OPEN government is, the less suspicious/secretive, or name calling, as in almost any adjective, the people you serve, are less likely to accuse! I am as guilty as anyone, when what we perceive as a bad decision; name some here_, are made and its' decided the less we know, the better! Voters are more likely to ask for a recall, special election, investigations, get the prosecutor or FBI involved. Some of the more rogueish incidents of late, were the surrounding of a residents home, from anonymous tips, the fear generated, when a representative of the FCC, sucessfully shut down a radio show, the false arrest of a citizen and incarceration, intending on shutting him up, permenantly, the repeated requests for surveillance of a public square, which should be one of the centerpieces in town, only to see the area, abused over and over, but have funds for a horse patrol; impressive, but of no use! [AsburyPark] We need a vision - we need a uniter
Sharon, I do agree that the Mayor appears to be a good man with good intentions. That said I don't know that any of our current council members have the ability to develop and lead this city in a way that is clearly needed. We need a strong voice who can develop a real vision for tackling problems and transforming the city while uniting the city around that vision. From some of our council I've never seen a real vision, just individiual pet projects and initiatives. From others I've seen vision, but coupled with a divisive approach that prevents anything from getting done. That doesn't make them bad people or bad intentioned, just not necessarily the right people to get us past where we are at this point in time. I would love nothing more than for any of our council to step up and prove me wrong. Come with vision. Build bridges rather than burning them. Unite the community behind a comprehensive plan for improving the quality of life for all Asbury residents. And for what it's worth I think I speak for many on this board who would be more than happy to step up and help. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, 2fine4u [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jack, Are you serious? [AsburyPark] Re: Living in a virtual world - the value of forums
Yes Sharon, I'm very serious. I don't know the mayor personally, but I do intend to get to know him. I'm going to try and arrange a meeting with him this week. When you say It sometimes appears that he is not outspoken, but he fervently works behind the scenes that says much to me. We need an outspoken mayor. We need him on the news, we need him to be publicly visible. There has been too much behind the scenes action in our city. Outside opinion of AP is currently at an all time low. People outside of this city have very little that is good to say about it, and the public at large doesn't have much faith in our cities administration. If I'm wrong, I stand corrected, but this is my opinion. When we have a police office saying to me that we don't have enough officers, we have a problem. And here's a few other opinions of mine; 1) I saw police officers patroling on Cookman and Main last night, near the restaraunts. Great, right? Well, who are they protecting? I'd like to know if an equal force was out in the parts of the city where the majority of crime is taking place. 2) Somehow our city finds the money to give Mayor's Balls, fund a Columbus Day event and buy a scant 2 horses and equip 2 police officers to ride them. How much did that cost? And where are they patroling? In the areas where people can see them. It's a show. Meanwhile, we had a murder the other night. Please connect the dots. 3) Is somebody instructing the Asbury Park Press to be silent about crime in our city? If not, why isn't the story of the 19 year olds murder front page news yet? What about the 8 bullets shot at kids last week? That story came and went like an afterthought. Does anybody else see a problem with this? I think the time has come for much more publicity about the horrible stuff that is going on in our city. This will force out administration to act. Finally, i've said this once, and I'll repeat it a thousand times until it makes a differerence... All the redevelopment in the world isn't going to make a bit of difference for our future until this city is perceived to be a safe place to move to and live in. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, 2fine4u [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jack, Are you serious? These images really piss me off... It's amazing this is allowed to go on. This isn't Central Park - the entire park is clearly visible from a police car from any direction, and with a little illumination even at night there should be nowhere in the park to hide. A park that should be about the most visible and vulnerable place for someone to do drugs is a drug den simply because nobody is patrolling it. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Please visit the photo section to see photos I've what I've found, and reported on today. [AsburyPark] Zoning Restrictions Not Subject to Heightened Scrutiny Under RLUIPA
Court of Appeal Rejects Bid to Reopen Scottish Rite Cathedral, Friday, October 19, 2007 Panel Says Revocation of Occupancy Permit Did Not Violate Masons' Religious Freedom Zoning restrictions on the facility's use are not subject to heightened scrutiny under federal law, the Court of Appeal has ruled. The opinion by Presiding Justice Dennis Perluss was filed Oct. 3 and certified for publication Wednesday, Oct. 17. The cathedral association argued that the city was violating their rights under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA). Judge Perluss: RLUIPA does not protect non-religious uses of facilities owned by religious institutions, he said. Specifically, a burden on a commercial enterprise used to fund a religious organization does not constitute a substantial burden on `religious exercise' within the meaning of RLUIPA, the jurist wrote. The legislative history and case law in other states, Perluss wrote, make clear that RLUIPA does not require strict scrutiny of a restriction on the secular uses of religious organizations' facilities. He cited a Pennsylvania case in which the state's intermediate appeals court held that RLUIPA did not protect a church's right to operate a day care facility because lack of a daycare only had a de minimis impact on the Church's opportunity to engage in fundamental religious activities. [AsburyPark] Re: Zoning Restrictions Not Subject to Heightened Scrutiny Under RLUIPA
This is exactly what I've been saying. A religious place of worship is one thing, but when you tr to extend it to everything else, then its a business. What if a house of worship wants to open a restaraunt in the building??? There are some neat buildings - should that be permitted? Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: Photos of discarded drug paraphenalia in Library Square Park
Yes, this is very sad. My church, Trinity, is across the street from the park and since we have a tiny parking lot, for every church function the congregation parks on the streets surrounding the park. I feel safe going there on Sunday mornings, but I know that around Christmas when there are a lot of night services, many members walk together in groups back to their cars because they are concerned about crime in the neighborhood. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Kevin Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer hinge98@ wrote: Please visit the photo section to see photos I've what I've found, and reported on today. I truly believe that we can use this cause as a wake up call on many levels. Who knows, maybe saving one small park can have a broader effect if we can do it right. [AsburyPark] Re: Photos of discarded drug paraphenalia in Library Square Park
Here's the beginnings of my plan; 1) Contact Jim Keady. He already has a voice mail waiting for him tomorrow morning. 2) Meet with the mayor to discuss the situation. I may ask some of you to accompany me. 3) If it comes down to money, I am going to visit Madison Marquette, talk to them about the situation, and see if they'd be willing to donate some money, or lighting for the park. This whole plan may be a long shot. The PD is now aware of the problem. If I face difficulties, I'll contact News 12 etc. and see if I can get them to do a story. I'd love to hear any ideas that will help with this. I'm going to get started with this tomorrow, with my phone call to the Mayor. I also sent an email to Reidy last Friday. Hopefully he'll respond as well. [AsburyPark] Buyers Pounce: If you just sit on it and sit on it, it will go up.”
They came early, they came in numbers and they came with bank checks for $5,000. The misery meant one thing: opportunity. “Even if you can’t sell it right away, if you just sit on it and sit on it, it will go up.” The bidding for most houses took less than three minutes. _Click here: Buyers Pounce as Homes Go on the Block - New York Times_ (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/22/us/22auction.html?hp=pagewanted=all) ** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
