Weldon, who recently began a 58-month prison term at Texas' Beaumont Federal Correctional Complex, would have received roughly $1,667 each month beginning next year. ... The PERS board also voted Wednesday to suspend a $5,000-per-month pension Weldon receives through the state Police and Firemen's Retirement System. [AsburyPark] City cancels meeting with developer
City cancels meeting with developer Lack of quorum postpones session to next week BY NANCY SHIELDS COASTAL MONMOUTH BUREAU FEBRUARY 21, 2008 ASBURY PARK City officials postponed a public work session with boardwalk developer Madison Marquette Wednesday, as well as the regular public meeting that was to follow, because only two of five City Council members showed up. Officials said they knew Councilman Jim Keady would not be present and that Councilman Ed Johnson had a work obligation at Brookdale Community College develop Wednesday morning. Mayor Kevin Sanders let the council know in the late afternoon that he could not attend because of a personal issue, but that came as approximately 12 professionals and staff working for Madison Marquette were waiting in the council foyer to meet. The planned two-hour work session to attempt to iron out some differences was rescheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, with the regular council meeting to follow at 7 p.m. The postponement comes as Madison Marquette works at a frenetic pace to open the rehabilitated boardwalk pavilions, housing, shops, restaurants and nightclubs by Memorial Day. The city's been great and worked really hard the last two months, said John Lanham, the company's senior vice president of development. They're pushing as hard as they can. It's tough to do this development in any environment. We wouldn't get it done without their cooperation. The developer and city are working together and fighting it out when they disagree. One of the issues on which the two sides differ is the city's requirement that the public have access to bathrooms in at least one of the five pavilion sites. Two weeks ago, Madison Marquette agreed that bathrooms in a planned Second Avenue beach club to be called Oasis would be open to the public if the state Department of Environmental Protection did not let them put the restrooms on green space between the pavilions. Donald Sammet, the city's director of planning and redevelopment, said a special meeting of the city's Technical Review Committee will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday for a review of some of Madison Marquette's plans or revised plans for the Wonder Bar on Ocean Avenue, pop-up retail structures on the green areas between the pavilions and the design of proposed stairwells onto the beach from Convention Hall. The Planning Board has approved Madison Marquette's plans for the First, Third and Fifth Avenue pavilions, and that work is under way. Another issue that still needs to be resolved is parking on Ocean Avenue. The council also has to look at plans for a proposed miniature golf course, a sculpture garden, a water park and a so-called interlocking garden on the green spaces between the pavilions, and rehabilitation plans for the Casino Carousel building. I just have one qustion; was Asbury Park affected adversely by Weldon and was the redevelopment HE signed on to, legal? He knew, he'd have to resign, once his corruption, became public, yet, he STILL had his finger in the affairs of Asbury Park! Shouldn't he have tabled redevelopment, feigned illness, or something? What he signed onto seems illegal, just on the face of things! Was his plan a payoff deal? Anyone who has the answers, can speak up! Mario, your post, brought to mind the questions I just asked. I can't believe the greed that's so pervasive. You have the MAYOR of one town, working as the administrator, in the town, he made his living off of, as a former fireman. He gets caught, with his hand in Ocean Township's till, while having the power, to determine the fate of another town. Was he clever or what? How many salaries and pensions, this not so dumb, fenagler, was pulling down? Anyone? Would what's going on, been any different? A New Jersey version of that riddle might ask: If a local public official takes a bribe and no one knows at the time, is anyone in town actually hurt by it? A complaint filed by Marlboro Township in November asserts that the town was indeed damaged by the actions of four former public officials who accepted more than $300,000 in bribes from real estate developers between 1997 and 2004. At the core of the dispute is the township's contention that the four former public officials Scannapieco; Planning Board member Stanley Young; municipal utilities chairman Richard Vuola, and Western Monmouth Utilities Authority executive director Frank Abate conspired with real estate developers to defraud the township. But one of those corrupt officials former Mayor Matthew V. Scannapieco, who admitted accepting $245,000 in cash and awaits sentencing contends that Marlboro has no proof of such harm and is asking a judge to dismiss the township's complaint. The real estate developers named in the complaint are Anthony Spalliero and his son, Joseph Spalliero; brothers Bernard and Steven Meiterman, and Edward Kay, who worked with the Meitermans. The November complaint was filed in federal court and claims the officials and the developers engaged in a pattern of racketeering, in violation of federal RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) Act. 2. Located on the corner of Main and Summerfield for the past 20 years and owned and managed by Sam Vaccaro and his family, the store was cited for its rare ability to thrive and prosper in spite of the competition from the âbig box â stores. The Public Official Award this year goes to Asbury Park Mayor Kevin Sanders. Mayor Sandersâ passion for Asbury Park, the place where he grew up and now lives with his wife and five children, is apparent. He has been instrumental in leading Asburyâs economic and civic rebirth. I predict that the Casino Carousel House will be turned into a food court...a replica (wink, wink) of the one at Monmouth Mall. The reason I'm posting this here is because we had a few big examples of this in our city. I'd love to see AP jump on the band wagon and start pushing students to be more then ball throwers and catchers. Watch students going to and coming from various schools. Strong correlations between number of students carrying home books for homework and the success rates for schools. Also, some of our surrounding high school districts tout their high rate of college acceptances; what they don't publish is the high number who drop out before getting a degree. I used to share an article with my students about the many business owners who preferred college degrees for their job openings which didn't actually require a college degree. Why? They considered most high schools to be mere diploma mills. A college degree, they said, indicated perseverance and a good work ethic in the applicant. There are many private schools without intermural sports who have more applicants than they can accommodate. Those on the secondary level concentrate, instead, on intramural sports: solid gym classes which emphasize life-long physical fitness and life-long athletic recreation more than competition. **Ideas to please picky eaters. (Hey isn't that one supposed to be an interpretation of the 'Real' Casino Carousel House right here in AP ???) I think the boardwalk idea at Monmouth mall was based off of AP. There intended to be a carousel in the center food court area. accross from what is now Old Navy? You can see the round shape on the floor, and the circular support system above it. It was designed for it... but i think time showed it would be a waste to add it. - Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Chamber Names Carousel Awards
I'd like to see a carousel in the Corousel House again, but i don't think its possable at this point. Look at the direction the boardwalk is going in I don't think it would fit in with the stuff planned for the boardwalk. Times can change though, who knows! I doubt it though... I was sitting behind members of MM at a previous counsil meeting. A frequent towns person wondered over and began asking questions about amusments and other boardwalk attractions (like the water park he had heard of as being part of MM's plan). Their answer to his questions was no.. - Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.

I have the feeling MM is not planning to cater to a boardwalk filled with children. When they first showed their plans in City Council there was nothing for children except a candy store with walls of candy. They did not mention the water park that was proposed in the app. MM in my opinion is gearing the boardwalk to the people they will need to fill the Condos that will be built on Ocean Ave. The Condos being built are for couples with no children. I can remember the days when I was young and living in South Belmar how we came to Asbury Park on special occasions ie Easter, Children's Day for the amusement rides. Is there still such a thing as children's day. MM is not interested in history. If Ap could survive on history there would be no need to do anything to the buildings on the BW except some paint. The Boardwalk that we knew is HISTORY. In someways I agree that we need to move on to bigger and better things, but MM cannot forget the families in AP because some of us are here for life. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, charlie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'd like to see a carousel in the Corousel House again, but i don't think its possable at this point. That and a ride like a carousel next to it. I see your point about the Freehold Mall... But i guess Monmouth Mall didn't see as a draw or people, otherwise why would have wente through and built it. They've had quite a few years between now and when the boardwalk additions were added on. Ah, who knows! Carnival rides, cotton candy, and others are good attractions. However, it's kind of obvious that isn't the image the boardwalk is going for. Like it or hate it, that appears to be what's going on! - Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Exactly. I wish it were different. Do you really picture a boardwalk filled teens and screaming kids, while there are million dollar condos only feet away on the other side of Ocean ave? I highly doubt it. But again, we will have to wait and see what happens. As the post up top mentions, MM didn't mention anything about a water park really. They said they had ideas for it, but i'm guessing it's nothing major or else they would have had it ready. Maybe it wasn't mentioned beasue it's not part of the summer 08'? - Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Chamber Names Carousel Awards
These are just thoughts, i have no idea if they're true. Maybe the freehold mall has their double decker carousel becasue they can afford it? Does the Freehold Mall bring in a large profit? From the area, and the percentage of high end stores, i'm guesing yes. It may have been an attraction, something done becasue they could afford to do it. Weather it makes money or it doesn't, it brings in people. But that could only have been done becasue the mall in general brings in enough extra money. Maybe Monmouth doesn't do well enough to spend on such an attraction. One that may not give back much. - Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.
