2008-02-22 Thread sharon_b283
Glenn,
You're absolutely right! Why doesn't the hypocrisy of it all, NOT
surprise me? At the 110th Anniversary, thing, the Carousel was used
for the cake, but still, no carousel in the city, except in our minds,
which I lost a long time ago! My mind, that is! Well, the snow is
falling and AP schools are open, as usual! Seems they'd give these
kids ONE snow day, since they haven't had any all year! As far as the
Chamber, it's just a popularity contest, as far as I'm concerned.
Name me one member, no 2, that live here! A lot of what goes on here,
is just so window dressing! Too many restaurants, with no real
business, here. Well, at least Tommy is consistent, with being a
Republican; seems he owns an oil business, here! Read it in the
paper. Weldon's pensions suspended. Have mixed feelings over that.
His firemen's pension, shouldn't have been involved. Seems he earned
that. He still has his family. Sorry folks, they shouldn't have to
pay for his mistakes. Alright, I've donned my flame-retardant, suit.
 Flame, away!

You took the words, right out of my mouth! These 34 to 40 somethings,
don't want anything, but singles stuff and their little martini bars
and beach houses! I came to the boardwalk, to have a kosher hot dog
and REAL lemonade! The fresh air and the funny looking fat/skinny and
buffed boys and girls, taking the surf! The sounds of summer and the
isolation in winter, when you had the BW to yourself! Would see dogs
being walked, a lone runner or goofy me, walking the boards. Now, you
have to contend with those who think they knowitall about US! For
those who remember miniature golf and the cutesy rides for kids, go to
seaside Hts., there's nothing here for YOU! Chuck, it would please me
so much to see just one iota, one thing; a carousel! Is that too much
to ask for?

I have the feeling MM is not planning to cater to a boardwalk filled
with children. When they first showed their plans in City Council there
was nothing for children except a candy store with walls of candy. They
did not mention the water park that was proposed in the app. MM in my
opinion is gearing the boardwalk to the people they will need to fill
the Condos that will be built on Ocean Ave. The Condos being built are
 for couples with no children.

I can remember the days when I was young and living in South Belmar how
we came to Asbury Park on special occasions ie Easter, Children's Day
for the amusement rides. Is there still such a thing as children's day.
MM is not interested in history. If Ap could survive on history there
would be no need to do anything to the buildings on the BW except some
paint. The Boardwalk that we knew is HISTORY. In someways I agree that
we need to move on to bigger and better things, but MM cannot forget the
families in AP because some of us are here for life.

The problem was not just the isolation in the winter, but the isolation in the
summer.

And don't forget, bringing events back to CH year round - like the old days.
The off
months were ceramic shows, boat shows and more. Ceramic shows were the almost
the
best weekends of the year and that was around Feb - march if i can think back
that far. It
wasn't kids or 30's somethings. It was busloads and busloads of seniors getting
off at CH
or Michael's and eating.

What creates memories is a starting point with a family To assume that a
childless couple
will be buying a condo is simply wrong and could be what didn't exactly help
anyone's
condo sale s in AP. Example - an empty nester coouple from Morriss Plains -
retired.
Grandkids. House in Florida, Morris Plains, kids in PA and Virginia. They want
to summer
in AP most of the time, keep house in Morris Plains and head to Fl in October.
They have
$1m to spend. Why were they turned off?
A) they were trying to accomoodate their lifestyle (grandchildren, kids..)
B) unable to select a unit or had limited choice -take it or leave it
C) unsure of what the grandkids would do (pool was a real plus)
d) time frame for development

One of these days there's going to be a huge outlet center off 66 and the
parkway. You
have a few new motels that sprung up from the collingswood circle to 66. You
hvae a few
more that want space. Seaview Sq is continuing to grow. Burlingtong going in
plus a few
more not named, Value City out. Burlington taking part of the old lowe's..

I would guess MM has a good idea fo what THEY think will work and how they will
make it
pay off. IF there is one smart old time operator on the BW, they will be able
to take
advantage, keep to tradition and do very, very well,

There's a way to make it kid friendly were it doesn't turn out like seaside nor
as kid
friendly as Point.

Grandma grandma grandma take me to thelet's see what MM comes up with,

PS: My son makes a good martini

Very sad.

I spent some time with Skip at Brickwall months back. He looked
very thin and frail.

He was an excellent writer. Huge vocabulary. Also witty.

I guess my funniest memory of him will be as bad santa. The UEZ
hired him to play Santa downtown, and he ended up cursing at the
kids.

So long, Skip. Check in on us now and again.

Very sad about Ms. Olsen, too, with her brother dying just two weeks
ago.

Condolences to Tommy and Eileen as well.

Comes in threes.

Sorry to hear about Skip. I liked him. I never forget a couple of
years ago during a First Saturday Event in December. Skip (of all
people) was dressed as Santa Claus ringing a bell by Press Plaza for
people to board the holiday trolley. Cookman was in its holiday attire
and the streets were packed with shoppers and visitors. An innocent
bystander asks Skip what's going on? Skip, likely having a bag on,
replies, what the f$$K does it look like?.

I gave him the nickname Bad Santa after that. Haven't seen him since
the summer when we had a drink together outside of Red Fusion.

RIP Bad Santa.

[AsburyPark] Asbury Park BW Dollars

2008-02-22 Thread dfsavgny
Thinking of pitching this to MM.

Asbury Park BW Dollars

Print your own money which can be spent anywhere on the boardwalk.
Stores have to give change back in the same AP currency. When you
exchange your money for AP BW currency it registers you for a weekly
drawing of say $500 (also awarded in AP BW currency). Or you can make
it daily drawings of $100. Set a minimum (say $25 converted to AP BW
dollars) for the drawing. Encourage spending on the BW and keep
dollars there.

Just watch for the counterfeiters.

I would so love an Apple store in Asbury...

Just picked up an iphone in Freehold the other day. I've got two Macs
to go along with about 4 pcs. I absolutely hate the PCs but need them
for certain pieces of software.

I'd imagine that about 75% of the folks who give Macs a chance, never go
back to PC.

I got into using a MAC when I started doing video for a living. There just
aren't any
industry standard editing programs out there for a PC that can compete with
those built
for a MAC. My MAC also is superior for photoshop and audio work. Eventually, I
just got
use to the ease of use and stability that my MAC offers...plus is just more fun
and pretty to
look at then a PC.
And I have yet to get a trojen, worm, virus or anything like that. For the most
part, MACs
are impervious to the dangers of the internet.
An APPLE store in AP? Unlikely, but I bet it would bring in crowds. And since
Apple is a
pretty hip company, I'd bet a Jersey Shore Apple store would be much better
placed
somewhere cool and funky rather then a mall (or Red Bank)

[AsburyPark] Wasn't someone going to create a forum like this....?

2008-02-22 Thread MarioAPNJ
Personally, I enjoy reading many of the sidebars and non-redevelopment
threads; and today's Mac vs. pc is a topic I'd like to hear more of from
locals.

A while back someone (Jack, I think) suggested an Asbury Park List, and I
like the model Jersey City uses.
_Jersey City List - Jersey City, NJ - Message Forum_
(http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/index.php)

Separate forums suited to our group: AP nostalgia, idea box, pets,
redevelopment, local politics, Fios vs Cablevision, etc. Even today's
memorials
suggests another useful forum.

What does it take to create such a list?

---you can get word on the mac or for that matter you can use google docs -
free. You
might not be able to get some legal software for the mac.

Fun is when you get paid to troubleshoot to show someone how to use the pc.
When you
come home at night, the last thing I ever wanted to hear is that the
computer(s) aren't
working. Even the dog walks across the keyboard.

Get the kids one at home. They'll love you. Not a problem with the wireless
either. I have a
windows 2000 pc at work, but I bring the mac with me.

Mario, one board is enough. Sometimes we get off topic, like this discussion.
But we tied it
back to bringing APPLE to AP. Something that is a draw is what's needed to the
downtown.

If it were me running whatever runs economic development in AP, I'd give them
FREE
rent.

How?

Use the UEZ money to pay it.

It would come back 100 times over and you'd probably have a few more people on
the
streets everyday, all day.

Assume I've always used a PC, and I'm pretty good at it.

Never laid my fingers on a MAC.

If I switched, how much time would I lose in productivity learning

Could I use Microsoft Word with it and the rest of my software, or

Eventually, I just got
use to the ease of use and stability that my MAC offers...plus is
just more fun and pretty to
 look at then a PC.
And I have yet to get a trojen, worm, virus or anything like that.
For the most part, MACs
are impervious to the dangers of the internet.
An APPLE store in AP? Unlikely, but I bet it would bring in
crowds. And since Apple is a
pretty hip company, I'd bet a Jersey Shore Apple store would be
much better placed
somewhere cool and funky rather then a mall (or Red Bank)

Also funny that Werner, Oak and Jack are MAC users. I know
there are
arguments back and forth about MAC, but I thought it funny the
three

Put it this way, for quite a few years I did ok consulting - all
windows stuff. I knew every
file, every problem everything. I also spent many, many hours at
home fighting my
 various
computers over the years from installing 32 disks on a pc for
windows to dropping off
 the
pcs's every other week somewhere to get them fixed and never
getting them back The
  final straw(s) were:

  1. compaq telling me that to fix the little on off button that
collasped into the body -
can't be fixed and the guy i took it to couldn't do it. My son
rigged up an eraser and
 tape
that worked. Then it crashed again.

  2. Those mac vs pc commercials and the kids laughing. yes, you
pay more for the mac,
but you can also schedule an appointment at the freehold store,
walk in they look at it
 and
either fix it or order you what you need and it's there in a day
or two. And that was only
ONE time in over 2 years for one and never sp far for the
other. That, to me is worth it.

One of these days, i'll fix m website as well using the mac.

And it looks cooler when you're around the younger crowd.

Be pretty cool to see an APPLE store in Cookman -like in
remaining space of the
 steinbach
  building, right?

I am in that 25%. But I hate windows too.

Thanks Oakdorf, i guess packing up is what's going on! I'm surpised almost
that MM didn't want anything to do with it. Right on the center of the Ocean
Ave spand... I guess Wesley grove was enough for them for the current time.

There have been workers there the last few weeks. Not sure what's going on
though, but things are being moved around. Organizing materials? Or are they
really working on something?
