Have you stopped and asked yourself WHY the sprinkler system hasn't worked in years, WHY the fountain is broken and has been used as an open air bathroom and garbage receptacle, WHY drugs are freely bought and sold in and around the park? Could the answer possibly be that the city, i.e.. the maintenance department and police department, have not cleaned/patrolled the park? Given the past history of the park and the lack of care to maintain and keep the vagrants and drug dealers out of there, what makes you think that the dogs will make a difference in how the city maintains the park? Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Dog Park
If the park is such a valued and cherished area of the Historical Society (I use that term very loosely) how come none of it members are patrolling it and cleaning it like other organizations do for the other green spaces in the city? I regularly patrol/clean up a green space by my home and I don't belong to any association. Sometimes if you want things done right you have to do them yourselves Your argument is flawed, has very little merit. By no means will the WHOLE park be consumed by a dog park. That's silly. The dog beach is not open to animals during the day. Yappy Hour is once/twice a week. Have you ever been to a dog park? You talk as if they're filled with feces and just plain dirty. In 25yrs of owning dogs and bringing them to dog parks, I have yet to see that You assume the dog owners who want this are lazy. Have you ever walked in AP at 7am? Do it, no one is lazy. Dog parks are not intended to be a shit/piss fest or for exercise, they are for socialization, like a bar or coffee shop for humans (you should try one sometime) And for your society to install things and expect others to maintain them is in fact LAZY Thank you, C. The city does a great job of keeping the park clean. And the city has quiet a fewother problem areas that need police attention. The park is ignored by the general public for some very simple reasons. First off, there's nor a single park bench there. Secondly, because it's so unused by the general public, the street people who spend time in it scare people away. And that's exactly why the dog loving community will bring new life to the park. An empty park invites trouble. Now, the park will have a reason to attract people. More people will make the park less attractive for misuse. I'm sorry, but your organization is completely out of touch with the reality of dog parks, and their benefits. If you are going to have a negative opinion about something you obviously know nothing about, then I suggest you do some research and educate yourselves. [AsburyPark] Re: Dog Park
I am on the fence about the dog park in Library Sq but I will give it a chance. I guess its selfishness since only a few of us dog owners use it now. I walk my little guy off the leash across streets etc. He probably wont want to go into the penned area but I will give it a chance and see what sort of control other owners have over their dogs. I believe in leash laws but your dog should be trained off leash as well. Many of the seniors from Phillips Seaview walk their dogs in LS. It is such a beautiful place and yes, I wish the fountain and lights would have held up. I know a great deal of money was spent there. BTW, city maintenance does a great job. What I am wondering about is its placement. Is it going to be the whole triangle on the east side bordering Heck? There are plaques and monuments there. I let Ray and Tony's two sons run freely there when we walk Louie. But, let's give it a chance. It's a pilot program. Most dog owners are great, but I hope we do not get folks who breed pit bulls and really do not care or train them. That's not a knock against pits, I know lovely ones and there are no bad dogs, only bad owners. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Hinge hinge98@... wrote: The city does a great job of keeping the park clean. [AsburyPark] Re: Dog Park
The park as a space is a failure in current day Asbury Park. It's not a destination for anyone, it's an avoidance. The value of the park (or any park for that matter) is for the people who have the right to use it as a public space and with its current reputation, it's not very welcoming. Currently and for a long while it hasn't been a great space... when something doesn't work it needs to be fixed. The layout of the park wont change and the entire space is remaining as a park. So a part of the lawn won't be there... what part of the population will that upset? Now instead there will be a great reason for people to want to spend time there. Asbury Park is a great community for dogs and dog owners... being that not only the animals, but the people who own them, are an important part of the community they should absolutely have a right to the space. Progress and preservation don't need to always be enemies. The give and take here is fairly simple. Give the dogs and their owners a great public space and they'll give back to the community by making a space a wonderful place to spend time. The park's historical glory will only return when the people come to cherish the space again. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Robert Thoman byline4336@... wrote: Have you stopped and asked yourself WHY the sprinkler system hasn't worked in years, WHY the fountain is broken and has been used as an open air bathroom and garbage receptacle, WHY drugs are freely bought and sold in and around the park? suggestion: Seasonal special public works employees - kind of like special cops I had the fund of driving my mother in law's car back from florida a few weeks ago - ALONE. I took advantage of it - I stopped in Savannah at night, woke up early and took a 3 hour self-guided tour of the squares. Each square about the size of library park. At 6:30 am - there were a few folks sleeping or hanging out in the the parks - by 9 am, I saw many what I would guess were type of job corp people with rakes, leaf blowers etc cleaning up the leaves etc - early in the morning, it may not be what you expect when you here about Savannah - but they seemed to be putting people to work. Mind you, there were still a few people sleeping on the benches around noon when I headed out. The city once again I read is looking for programs or has programs and funding to put kids or adults to work. WELL - nothing wrong with learning about trees, shrubs, grass, installing sprinklers etc. You can train some kids or adults and it;s a JOB. Special Park employee. Take some of the cash from the parking authority. On Sprinklers, I get all my stuff from sprinklerwarehouse.com saved a ton of cash on parts and installation/repair. A guy hit me $375 once for a valve that I picked up for $81.00 and did it myself (plus fixed the kooky tie in he did so if goes again I can replace it in 3 minutes). It's pretty basic - water line into valve and long as there is power for the timers. The heads are cheap. And if someone was able to raise $60k, well good for them. At least the money went ot a cause - now to figure out how ti maintain it and enhance even more. Yahoo! My pitbull is a therapy dog...lives w/two shihtzu's who terrorize him. He's actually an American Staffordshire. Everyone around here knows him. He used to put on a show for people at the green space at 5th and Locust and Bridge.he'd climb the trees. Six feet up or so. Then he blew out both knees. 9K later, he doesn't climb trees anymore. Just goes to hospitals and plays with my little nieces. I've owned pits for 18yrs. They are not for everyone. In the wrong hands they can cause problems, mainly backyard breeders and music videos have hurt the breed. As many pitbulls as there are in Asbury, I have rarely come across any aggressive ones. I could go on for days advocating for them, but in the same breath I understand ones reservations. Thank you, C. Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Dog Park YMCA
Dear Mr. Thoman; Library Park is truly a beautiful park and lovely setting; however, it doesn't seem to the serve the community as a whole since it is all too often occupied by those who vandalize that which you have worked so hard to improve. It actually might be best for the preservation of its partial beauty to host the canine community and its owners in the lovely oasis so that just through their abundant presence more citizens will take notice and will enjoy the park; as well, mischievous conduct will be deterred. I personally thought the Grand Ave religious organizations fine Churches would get more involved with Library Park; however, that does not seem to be so, given that most special occasion photo ops occur on the boardwalk. Just curious, i watched the slicing of original relief on the Young Mens Christian building this past weekend recently purchased by johnny mac co., does the historic society have an opinion or suggest control on what can be destroyed on such a historic building? Thanks for your patience to my obvious lack of knowledge of your efforts. Kindly, Reggie On Jun 7, 2012, at 6:54 PM, Hinge wrote: Also, dogs aren't permitted at the beach area from May until Sept. Subject: [AsburyPark] Dog Park As a member of the Asbury Park Historical Society, I among the majority of others on the Board of Directors, listened to Rachel Hirchfeld's presentation to the Board a few months ago touting the virtues of having a dog park located in a section of Library Park. Having spent in excess of $60,000 dollars to bring the park back to its former glory which included restoration of the fountain, putting in a sprinkling system to water the many hedges and plants and trees we planted, we informed Ms Hirchfeld that as a group we were not in favor of setting aside a portion of the park for the dogs of Asbury since there already is a portion of the beach set aside for the dog's socialization as she called it. The park historically was intended for the use of the people of Asbury, not for its canine population. We are vehemently opposed to turning this historical property over to those who view it as a dumping grounds for the use of dog-owners and their pets who, perhaps, are too lazy to walk their pets to the beach area! We wanted to know who would be responsible for cleaning up the dog-droppings, maintaining the set-aside area, paying for the installation of fences around the designated area, etc. Ms. Hirchfeld said that would be determined as plans for the dog area progressed and invited us to appoint members of the historical society to the planning board. Teddy Chomko and I volunteered to serve on that committee, but as of today, we have not heard a word from the committee. Now, it seems, the plans for the dog part have have been approved by the council to try it out. Thanks again, Asbury Park City Council, for including the Historical Society in the decision making process!! [AsburyPark] Re: Dog Park YMCA
Cameras. Your dog poops and only you and your dog are there. You give that funny look around, don't pick it up cause your too lazy and think no one saw it and walk away. The Poop Cam gets you. I've seen people on dog beach walk away from their dog's poop - but a majority pick it up. Make sure all dogs have a license. Can't even get into the WB on doggie days without a WB Dog id I think. Other then a few paranoid dog owners every now and then, most of the dog owners I met on the beach are a great bunch as are their dogs. They should also consider making dog beach or a smaller section of it a full day instead of cutting it off @ 9 am. It's a great PR bit as well. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, \Reggie\ Regine Flimlin regineflimlin@... wrote: Dear Mr. Thoman; Library Park is truly a beautiful park and lovely setting; however, it doesn't seem to the serve the community as a whole since it is all too often occupied by those who vandalize that which you have worked so hard to improve.
