The way I see it, we've lost our beach, too, when a blue screen is put up, too! The Beach belongs to Asbury Park and the powers that be ALLOWED this? Yeah, someone's been bought off! The blue screen says, non-payers, NOT allowed and YOU people either! Private party on a public beach? $45.00? The beach should be free, anyway. New Jersey is the ONLY state, that you have to PAY to use what nature gave to ALL of us; not just the rich, satisfying their greedy, selfish whims, so they can feel better! What I still love about AP is Cookman Ave, and the entire area surrounding it. It still retains the AP authenticity that I grew up with. But, for me, it's not just about being sentimental. It's more about uniqueness and diversity. I've traveled extensively, both in this country and abroad, and what I find happening here in America is that too many places are losing their identity to redevelopment that isn't done with a sense of place or history. There are so many places in this country that are cookie cutter exactly the same. When I used to tour in the music biz, i recall waking up in my tour bus and being confused because I knew we just drove 600 miles overnight, but the view out the window was virtually the same as the place we just left. That observation was repeated over and over. But there is unique here in America. Places like Lawrence Kansas, Seattle, Madison Wisconsin, much of NYC to name a few. When I look at our current boardwalk, I see the beautiful CH/Paramount on one end, and the ghost of The Casino on the other. But in between, I see pedestrian boring architecture that reminds me of strip malls. Maybe not typical NJ strip malls, but no different then what overpopulates places like Miami. I really don't think the middle redeveloped section of the boardwalk fits in with the end pieces. I think the pavilion that MM and AP Partners has their offices in to be a complete waste of space. The look and style is like a mall. Everything is the same, stucco and some color badly used. Cartoon Architecture. I think time will not improve that, a lot of money has been spent. Looks like thats what your getting. The style and construction methods could be found just about anywhere. The issue in many places with chains coming in is the placenment of signs and the coorporate identity overtaking the buildings. Its usually handled with strict design codes. I guess no such thing exists for the boardwalk along with no code to restore the bandstand building. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Allan Peterson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jack, It is not a strip mall...yet. Also, who knows if Gary is telling the truth but if you read the article in the tri city news he does not want to bring in big retailers because he realizes that is not what the boardwalk is about and would not create a UNIQUE destination. I was thinking more in terms of look then in content. I'd like to be proven wrong. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for all the retailers that have opened on our boardwalk. I guess the problem for me is that I'm not easily seduced by the redevelopment. I will always agree that it looks better, but the direction that the content of the redevelopment has taken does little for me. When I see our boardwalk, I remember the AP of my childhood, as well as all the boardwalks i've seen throughout my life. There's none of that wonder and excitement on our boardwalk for me. None of the sights, sounds or smells. I just see high priced retail, $68 tee shirts and $70 shorts. I don't go to the boardwalk for things like that. And I also think that the traffic we are starting to see would be dramatically bigger if tourism was the focus, not retail. I respect other peoples joy over where we are at, but I'm sorry, it does nothing for me. It's just not what I hoped for, and no matter how hard I try I can't even force myself to like it. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Allan Peterson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jack, It is not a strip mall...yet. [AsburyPark] Re: Help Need with ReVision's productions of HAIR.
Dan, I just want our grand old boardwalk back that gives equal time to entertainment for familes and children. Just like on the inside covers of the Helen Pike book. I miss the crackle of shooting galleries, I miss the ionized air smell of bumper cars and the sweet scent of cotton candy and taffy being made. I miss the screams of children on roller coasters. I miss the view from the top of a ferris wheel. I really miss skee ball. I've seen things that look exactly like what our pavillions are becoming all over this country, from California to Miami...but this isn't California or Miami, it's Asbury Park. Maybe MM is creating a new identity for AP, but that identity has already been taken scores of other times. We already had unique, and that unique has been squandered and ignored. And I can honestly say that if MM would've looked to the past instead of the future, and preserved and brought back the look and feel of the boardwalk as it was in it's heyday, then we would've had unique in our homogenized landscape. Once again, it's just me talking, reflecting on my values, likes and dislikes. Other people love what is happening. I just can't fake that, which is why i'm being so critical. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, dsher4 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jack, I am curious what type of shops should be in the pavillions so they aren't a strip mall? Jack, I understand your point and don't disagree with your desire for something of wonder and excitement. However, those other boarkwalks have been done or are in point pleasant for example. I can't disagree with that Dan. But, I guess I'm not one of those adults, and I doubt the musical direction things we'll be taking are much to my taste either. If it was more Asbury Lanes/The Saint, i'd be psyched, but I think we're heading in a more conservative musical direction. I'm not a fan of the Jazz Lobsters or P-Dub assassins. I like my music to be a bit more edgy and modern. Original. I don't like shopping. I like to be around history. Funny thing is, I don't like Pt. or Seaside either. Both are kinda trashy in my opinion. Bottom line is that many people are going to love the new AP. I'm just not one of them. I have more fun wandering around Ocean Grove on my bicycle these days. To me, a good time is riding my bike around the tent city in the early evening. There's something about that that just does it for me. I am trying the best I can to find something I like about the boardwalk redev, but I just can't fake it. I'd rather hang out with Jonnie G at his little vending truck then browse thru a store with overpriced clothing. I can do that any day, but I'm not going to waste my time at the beach doing so. [AsburyPark] Re: Help Need with ReVision's productions of HAIR.
John, I think you hit the nail on the head for me. I understand that there's a cat haven above the MM offices, but does that really belong in a boardwalk pavilion? Not in my opinion. I really dislike the shipping containers, despite what goodies live inside them, and I really hate that one of them is crowding Madam Maries. And, unfortunately for me, I grew up here, so I still have a memory of what once was, from the Swan boats, to the amazing movie theaters, to the Metropolitain to riding the Ferris Wheel in the Palace. I just can't find that feeling in what we have now. Eventually, we'll probably have condos filling the empty lots. Some people love that because of the $ they can generate, but i'm not really all about money. It's all old news though. I think we lost too much of our uniqueness and it's never coming back, at least as far as the boardwalk goes. As i've said, some people will love it, and I suspect those people kinda like being in familiar surroundings no matter where they are. Like my friends that insist on eating McDonalds when they travel abroad instead of delving into local cuisine (which is quite prevalent in the rock touring world) --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, nobepeymay [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer hinge98@ wrote: I can't disagree with that Dan. Hi David, I wish that I was a neighbor! I would be there to help. (I spent an hour this morning looking at realty listings.) Can you explain to the group how the seating is being planned? I am very interested in how you are going to pull this off. And... if MM hasn't requested a site inspection of that Parking lot (the main reason that most of the lots are closed), you might want to encourage them to get them ready for inspection and make the request, people will want to park. [AsburyPark] Re: Help Need with ReVision's productions of HAIR.
Thanks for asking about our production. What makes the ReVision Theatre unique is what our name implies. When you see a ReVision Theatre production you will be seeing a show that you will not be able to see anywhere else. We put our unique stamp on everything we do. Anyone who saw HELLO, DOLLY! knows that is true. We were attracted to producing HAIR in the Carousel building because we knew the space would add to our unique vision. You will see HAIR from a new point a view and that includes the seating. To understand and experience what we mean, you'll have to buy a ticket. And speaking of tickets...they are selling at an amazingly brisk pace so you better hurry and purchase your tickets now or you'll miss it!
