SF Municipal Wi-Fi Wait Grows

...
San Francisco's municipal Wi-Fi project, originally proposed in 2004,
is one of the most closely watched in the U.S. It would include a paid
service provided by EarthLink and a slower, free service from Google
Inc. The plan has run into a thicket of objections concerning privacy,
health, quality of service, help for disadvantaged residents, the
city's role, and the process of conceiving and approving the project.
Plans elsewhere in the country, including in Philadelphia and
Sacramento, California, also have run into problems and delays.

I think that this is a great idea and would be a great thing for the
City. I went to see Tom Gilmore, UEZ, over two years ago regarding
this issue as I suggested that the UEZ get Asbury Partners, the
Chamber of Commerce/Merchants Guild, and the Board of Education
together to champion, fund, get grants, and support this idea for a
number of reasons. It would be a selling point for the waterfront
area; it would be a selling point for the merchants, and it would
afford the City school students the opportunity to get on the net
without paying a monthly fee.

I don't believe it went anywhere at that time.

I would be interested in supporting the initiation of this concept
again as I believe that the above reasons are still valid.

Asbury Park has been a Hot Spot for several years. I installed the
WiFi system while working for Joe D'Andrea at West21.

You can log in with a credit card virtually anywhere in proxility to

Let me know how it works (or doesn't) as I'm still associated with

Radio waves do not respect City limits.
Someone has to pay for the network.
It is currently privately owned.

If it were subsidized by the means suggested, perhaps login/password
info could be given upon request to city residents ?

Or the organizations could purchase it, or set up their own network.
A completely free system is very idealistic. Any examples of one?

I think one of the problems with a citywide WiFi system is that the service
provider,
probably Cablevision, wouldn't want to compete with itself by giving away
something for
free in a city where it's got many subscribers.
It would probably be best used in non-residential areas i.e Convention, Hotel,
Dining,...facilities and the beach, the Cookman sidewalk cafe zone etc.

U should be able to get tmobile or ATT to provide their services -
pay as you go or sbscription.

Then there is also verizon, sprint etc for your laptop (cards) for
around 49 month or your cell phone with net access could double as a
modem if hacked.

But I'm for free service.

America's cup has access and there are a few other hot spots - like
unsecured networks around ap. If you have a cell phone or lap with
built in wireless, just turn it on drive slow. You should be able to
pick up a signal at least around cookman ave.
