SF Municipal Wi-Fi Wait Grows ... San Francisco's municipal Wi-Fi project, originally proposed in 2004, is one of the most closely watched in the U.S. It would include a paid service provided by EarthLink and a slower, free service from Google Inc. The plan has run into a thicket of objections concerning privacy, health, quality of service, help for disadvantaged residents, the city's role, and the process of conceiving and approving the project. I think that this is a great idea and would be a great thing for the City. I went to see Tom Gilmore, UEZ, over two years ago regarding this issue as I suggested that the UEZ get Asbury Partners, the Chamber of Commerce/Merchants Guild, and the Board of Education together to champion, fund, get grants, and support this idea for a number of reasons. It would be a selling point for the waterfront area; it would be a selling point for the merchants, and it would afford the City school students the opportunity to get on the net without paying a monthly fee. I don't believe it went anywhere at that time. I would be interested in supporting the initiation of this concept again as I believe that the above reasons are still valid. I think one of the problems with a citywide WiFi system is that the service provider, probably Cablevision, wouldn't want to compete with itself by giving away something for free in a city where it's got many subscribers.
