Of course, I love my Mac a thousand times more than my PCs. I only

How many of you are "still" using a pc vs. a mac.

Took me a long time til one night I was at the apple store with my
daughter and she pointed at the pc guy on a poster and laughed.

Now I just need an "mac" computer case to carry it to work and I can

Actually when I was a kid in Long Branch I was our block's pogo stick champion!  The sad thing is now kids never go out to play---Every night we played dodge ball, hit the bat, hide and seek, jingle jump or had handmade go karts with no brakes we would ride to the bottom of the hill.  That was such great fun!  After walking to St Michaels Church on Sunday we would go to Takanassee Lake and with a stick, string, cork and a safety pin look for worms so we could spend the day fishing!   Other days we would stick our little thumbs out and secretly  hitchike to the Long Branch Boardwalk to play pinball.  Sometimes we would explore the grounds of monmouth College or ride our bikes to Elberon Train Station for candy. I have such great memories of those days! No matter where we were the one important
thing was Never Be Late For Dinner or you were in big trouble!

with me yelling "Off! Now!"

We keep them busy with sports music and CCD. I hate September to
June, because we are on a 7 day per week schedule (no joke). Each
day we have a kid going somewhere. We stop it all for the summer.
No comittments. Just go out and have fun.

As they are growing I know there is going to come a point when they
will be able to hang with their friends more than me (starting to
happen now), so I'm fitting in as much as I can right now. We are
at the point where when we go places as a family, my two older ones
are asking "Can't I just go over so and so's house until you guys
get back?" No. Get in the car.

My daughter is a teenager. I figure once she gets a license, I'm
toast. I make her hang with me now - like it or not.

She's usually pretty good about it once we get where we are going
and I pull the ipod out of her ear.

She's a great kid. So good she suckered us into having the 3 boys.
Thought they'd be as easy as her. As they say, NOT!

Still fun though.

[AsburyPark] Re: recreation

2007-10-10 Thread Hinge
I guess I come from a completely different background.
I come from a severely broken family.
When I grew up, I took care of my parents, instead of the other way around. I
grew up way
too young, way too fast.
I was no angel.
I did fine until 11th grade. Great student. Total nerd
Then 3 things changed.
1) I got a car
2) I got a guitar
3) I learned about this thing called "pot" I swore i'd never smoke pot. I got a
job at
Monmouth Mall, working for Lowery Organs, restoring pipe organs actually. There
was a
cool guy working there. Kinda a hippy. Him, my best friend, and I used to drive
all over NJ
restoring pipe organs and gathering parts. One day, he busted out this pipe and
this funny
smelling stuff. My friend tried it. I refused. They seemed to be extra happy,
so I went
against my best wishes, and away I went.
The next day I went to school and saw another friend, the "Jeff Spicolli" of
Monmouth
Regional High School. I shyly asked "Um...do you know where I can get some pot?"
I spent the next 4 hours playing pinball at 7-11. It was amazing.
Senior year saw me go from being a model student, to a model fuck-up.
I shoplifted. I got stoned. I never drank. No sex either.
Eventually I grew up.
I'm still a nerd though.

Yeah, I looked at porno mags when I was a kid.
Unfortunately in the scenario I described below, the kind of porn that this kid
is looking at
is much more extreme. I won't go into any details, but it didn't exist when we

Nice numbers.

BUT, it all has to ADA compliant, fences, etc. Add to that engineering
costs. Plumbing costs etc.

Fence and sidewalk for $5k? Not bad. Find me that mason.

Hopefully, future funding will be utilzed more effectively vs. the use
it or lose it mentality of government or large corp budgeting cycles.

I read a story of a park in PA, state park with the most expensive
bathrooms at around $1.5m, per stall (2). Seems they wanted a nice
stop on the hiking trail. So they hired a team of engineers and
architects. And they got a very nice his and her toilets for $3m built.

Thank You, You get the point.

Seems that folks have lost all sense of proportion regarding the costs
of things.

$100,000 will buy a large beautiful pool for your backyard.
2 nice tiled bathrooms could be $20,000
The building to house the bathrooms $10,000
Tasteful landscaping, say $5,000
Fence, sidewalks, misc, say another $5,000

I'll even add in $10,000 for 'contingencies'

That's $150,000.
Lets double it for good measure - $300,000

$300,000 is most likely in the ball park for a functional nice facility.

Folks, That $800,000 is a LOT of money.
Public money, yours and mine,
that is supposed to have been spent wisely.

Or, perhaps not at all if $300,000 would do the job.

Werner

LOL :-)

Take your goldfish to the "Almost Million Dollar Water Park",
Make it feel real special.

I used to have tropical fish, and cats. I miss them.

And here I sit. Staring at our goldfish.

Fish are better then dogs. Especially goldfish.

Cheaper then dogs and kids.

Wow,

All this talk of raising kids and the issues involved.

So glad I decided, at an early age, not to have any.

Thanks for reaffirming my decision.

I've explained to my kids the power of the Internet. Powerful for

ZERO.

Teach them how to use the computer. I've given my kids the opportunity

Keep their minds guessing. I also let them watch anything on TV. So in

And you would raise a serial killer or a Mormon if you followed these
measures. Beleive me, I don't have a handle on it. Sort of like riding
a bike, some technique and some intuition.

Spending time with my parents would have been like punishment when I
was a kid. In fact it was. When I was about 13 I drank so much with
older friends I went unconscious for hours. When semiconcscious I kept
wishing to die not to face my father, who would make Tony Soprano look
like a wuss. My punishment - had to get a crew cut, were shorts and
spend my entire summer with my dad. I would have rather been a Georgia
chain gang.

Did I drink again? You betcha! Just made sure not to get caught.
Growing up I knew my family was not what I saw on TV. Dr. Stone ate
dinner dressed in a tie and Donna Reed in a party dress. My father
didn;t wear a shirt and my mom was in a moomoo.

Although they never would win any awards for parenting, I knew I was
loved and that my parents wanted me to do well. I guess that's all you
need to know and do as a parent. Let your kids know you love them and
care for them and that you set certain boundaries - do your best in
school, respect other people and yourself, etc. Teach by example. Let
them have their computers, video games and yeah, even porn I guess.

Your right, the toys do change, and i'm worried that the toys are hurting our
kids by
making them sedentary.
I don't really see a computer to be a good, healthy toy.
I have a friend who just won custody of his son after a long battle following
and ugly
divorce.
The son moves into the new home, and all he wants to do is surf the internet
and play
video games, and when he's not doing that he's attached to his cell phone like
it's an IV.
The worst part is the son sneaks onto the internet whenever possible and looks
at porn,
and now my friends want me to come over and install software so they can
monitor what
he's looking at. I don't know how big, or common this problem is, but it scares
me.
I guess it all comes down to good parenting.
If I had kids, they would not have their own computer, they'd use the family
computer.
Definitely no video games in my house.
And i'd do my best to limit their use of text messages on their cell phones.
I hope that doesn't sound harsh, but that's how I feel.
I'd spend more time with them, take lots of day trips, and do as much outdoor
stuff as
possible.
And they would definitely ride bikes responsibly.

If that is the case, we got an 800,000 water park for only 400,000. Not bad.

The money is spent why cry over it now? Unless one is involved in water park
construction or knows there were multiple bids and the lowest was not selected
for a reason, why complain? I understand getting the most for the money but
there must be decisions being made today that could be voted on and changed.

Interesting.
Let's put all things aside for a moment and think about what it's like to be a
child in 2007.
Now, I don't have kids so I may some help with this one.
What do children and teens do for fun these days?
Really.
Seems to me that the main forms of recreation they have are passive, i.e. the
internet,
their cell phones and texting, and video games, which are a big obssession for
some many
kids, and big bucks for the industry.
Video games and the internet keep kids in their homes, on their butts, doing
nothing
important. Social networking. What happened to real friends, not just myspace
friends?
Do others here see as many kids out playing anywhere as much as we did when we
were
young? I don't think so. I certainly don't.
Do other's feel as I do that what I mentioned about is bad and actually a step
backward?
Of course, i'm writing on a message board on the internet. But I have friends
with children
that spend all their spare time in front of their computers.
I feel like something is wrong with this picture, but it's just one guys point
of view.
Any thoughts?

Why are you going off the point? Value vs Money Spent.

Lets say you have 100 kids that need shoes.
You have $4000.00 to help out.

Do you buy buy 5 pairs of gold plated sneakers at $800 each.
Or
Do you buy 100 Pairs of good sneakers at $40 each

Do you make the most of your funds or do you waste it?

[AsburyPark] Re: recreation

2007-10-10 Thread Hinge
I don't know the details of things either, nor the planning, bidding, anything.
But what i'm reading is that some of us forget what's it's like to be kids, and
maybe that's
a big problem in our country.
The kids that I saw there could care less about $$$. It was hot, they were
splashing
around, and it looked like they were having fun. I wanted to join them.
Could it have been built cheaper?
I dunno.
Could've it been built better?
I dunno.
I beginning to see why people are moving away from NJ.
It's all about money and greed.
We are losing our human side, the ability to have fun and appreciate aesthetic
things, and
way out of touch with our youth.
Sad.

Not sure that was exactly the point people are making and as a
result it's an unfair analogy.

What I'm hearing many say is that the water park is a nice idea but
that $800k should have gone much farther than what was built.
Knowing nothing about constructing water parks I really don't know
one way or the other. Was the project multiple bid? Was the
selection process open to the public?

I think it's great that this was built. Could we have gotten more?
Don't know.

All well and good the point remains that it is 'our money' (taxpayers)

That amount of money could have endowed a recreation program including

many more children.

Its not about the Park its about the value received for the money spent.

I didn't bash that. It's a start and the price is what it is.

I'll get the pic of me and my sisters on the chicken farm in freehold.
We had a mud puddle made by the feed trucks.

I suppose polarization is a matter of where you are observing from.
If you disagree with me, can I say you are polarizing? Or is the
better observation that we just disagree?

I wouldn't disagree with someone just because they are affiliated
with the Democrat party. I look at what they stand for. There are
some Dems I like.

In my column it's not the rank and file Dem who goes to work
everyday and loves his country that I write about. I often make
that distinction in my column.

I take on the extremists on the far left.

Barack is pretty new so I don't know what to think of him either way.
I havn't seen that much of him. I think he's too new to push Hillary

You're right, you did not say that so I should have not put you in
that camp. But let's be honest, you're on Keady a few days ago about
tourism plans. Then you pick up the recreation bit. I've already

Have you taken Keady up on his offer to speak with you? You will get

You want a medal? Your actions belie your spin on Keady then. You
contradict yourself. You are getting slippier than Faiella now. Even
I am having a hard time pinning you down. You remind me of the Lenny
Bruce joke about the guy denying he was cheating on his his wife
when she catches him in bed with the woman (what woman?). Remind me
to tell it to you sometimes.

That's your spin

You weren't in the APP Napoleon. Nor did I imply that Inspector Van
Buren did that. All I said was as from the beginning that you
distort on JK and that other officials (Reidy, Van Buren, etc.)
recognize that the roots of the social problems are not all criminal.

Yeah, but recreation might prevent a kid from being a scumbag in the
first place.

Were you mentioned in the article? Is there no end to your ego?

I don't think so. There were no quotation marks at the beginning of
that paragraph. I think I put them at the beginning of the excerpt
and at the end to demark what was from APP. Inspector Van Buren's
remarks had quotes all by themselves within the excerpt. Discernable
by most unbiased eyes.

Tommy, what's your view on Barack Obama?
If he gets elected, and people start discussing it here, are you gonna attack?

[AsburyPark] Re: Recreation-Dan's lying

2006-10-24 Thread justifiedright
Dan you are quick to pull out the words "lying" and misrepresenting
on others here.

In this post, you are lying. Terribly I might add, since your lies
are so obvious. Let's take a look.

You say:

> Now those who think that recreation has no place at
> the table (Tommy, Allan)...

Huge lie. The criticism leveled was that recreation is not an
appropriate response to a shooting. No one said it doesn't have a
place at the table. You're lying about Allan and me. Give Allen an
apology - I don't want one.

Not that I owe you any proof of that, but while you sit on your arse
crying on this board, I've been assisting Van Buran with the PAL
boxing program. That's recreation, but I'm not going to claim that
program is a proper response to a shooting.

Keady exploited shootings by asking for money for his pet projects
right as the shootings occurred. Disgraceful. You didn't see Van
Buren and me do that. Recreation is not what prevents a scumbag
from shooting. Police action is.

Then you say this...

> can disagree with the APPD on this. Take them
> to task as you did JK.

...And you paste this from the press:

> Pugh died at a time when police, the city and some
>volunteer "groups have strengthened programs for city youth — from
>biddy basketball to boot camp to swimming and Police Explorers.
>
> "We think we're taking a lot of positive steps," said police
>Inspector Chris Van Buren.

That's Chris agreeing with me. Anyone who made it past remedial
reading in a Brooklyn grammer school can see that. He is telling
the press not only do we have recrecation - we've strenghened it.
Yet the shooting still happened. He is taking my postion, not
Keady's postion.

So you're lying about Van Buren.

Next to that, you posted this:

> But the recent gun violence reflects the lack of programs
>available the
> past two decades for the older teenagers and young adults, whose
> formative years often became shaped by struggling schools, few job
> opportunities and little recreation.

You were trying to pawn that statement off on Chris Van Buren.
That's you lying again. That quote was Press reporter's opinion,
disagreeing with Chris.

Now, I could have written this whole post without calling you I
liar. I could have said either I disagree or you are mistaken.

I decided to go your way.

Stop lying.

believe it or not, I've suggested this before. Probably 3 years ago -
on Asburyradio. I grew up in Wanamassa. How else you think we learned
to play basketball - with kids from Ocean?? We used to get our ass
kicked, get chased off the courts sometimes. why do you think Ocean Twp
got rid of the basketball courts in Wanamassa at Park Blvd? Why do you
think Allenhurst some years back did that and moved the park?

I think its fine.

But then again, why can't AP start providing for their own. AP has
pissed away more federal and state money then probably Newark and
Camden.

indoor recreation facility instead of a shopping mall as proposed.

Very approprate since that's what it was designed for originally.
Preserve and restore a part of history and get the recreation oppotunities

Yeah, and how about that groovy group of people from Asbury Lanes (I think)
that was
playing kickball every Monday night in Bradley park over the summer.
Sure looked like fun to me.

[AsburyPark] Re: Recreation Geniuses

2006-10-19 Thread wernerapnj
Money tossed around is an understatement.

$800,000 was spent to build a "water park" next to the Middle School off Bangs
Avenue.

That's -- Eight Hundred Thousand Dollars -- for a restroom, a couple of spray
heads and
a fence that's locked most of the time. All on a plot about 50x50 in size.

Public funds no less. $400,000 green acres grant and $400,000 loan that the
taxpayers
are paying back

For that kind of money a self perpetuating trust or endowment could have been
set up to
take care of recreation in pertpetuety.
