[Audiogames-reflector] Just started on we're alive

Just started on we're alive

While I know we obviously have a very big topic on this, I dont want spoilage, so starting another seemed like a good idea.I started last night, and after spending a lot of time being up, am currently half way through chapter eight. I must admit I like thus far. The audio quality is okay, (better than darker projects but not quite up to some of the commercial Doctor who stuff from big finish), however that doesnt matter to me so much as the acting and the writing, which are both very good. I initially was a little wary at the start what with the hole thing beginning with michael and his military friends, their first rescue being a couple of girls etc. Earlier this year I read the zombi fall out series by Mark Tufo, which frankly was horrible, though annoyingly I kept reading since it had potential. What made that series bad is that the main character was a right wing ex us army nutcase, and wrants aabout a mans duty, pa
nsy liberals and ridiculously characatured sterriotypes really ruined what might have been a nice series (the emphasis on toilet humour didnt really encourage either). However I will say I was pleasantly surprised, both in the way that though the main characters are military, but that theyre not a look as the us military arent they invinsible accept maybe for gunny, aka bert, and I rather like the idea he has his own issues. Likewise, pegs gun thing which I thought initially would be a anti liberal excuse, is actually a nicely handled social phobia. and though michael and the other guys have a little of the military thing, its not out of character or treated as the be all and end all solution they just complete hard men.My only issue thus far is that the series is feeling a little too episodic, with random adventures, and a lot of escapes, though I assume this wil
l chnge in the future. I also hope the zombi evolution thing will continue. One issue Ive seen in other works of zombi fiction (or indeed most appocalypse fiction), is that after youve gone through the initial shock and setting up a base, things rather tale off unless the threat can continue. Some works solve this with a time skip, as indeed the original day of the triffids did, but with it being such a nice series for handling stuff in minute detail in real time Id be disappointed if were alive did this (again, this was something which zombi fall out started doing but taled off). While I think Justin Cronins passage series is my favourite zombocalypse thus far, I am surprisingly enjoying were alive, which given the huge amount of zombi stuff is quite surprising, it seems zombies are getting as prevailent as vampires these days, which is odd since the genre has been aro
und since the original I am legend (published in the the 1970s), or even before that with works like day of the triffids, (though they arent exactly zombies). Its nice though that there is still originality in the idea, even if at the moment it seems that were alive is more the case of something done well, than a completely original take on the genre.Well, time to see if the mallers do any mawling .URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147080#p147080

Well my first ever audiogame in 2005 was Der Tag wird zur Nacht.I heard of Bavisoft in 2007, but since I was in the 4th grade and I could only play games like time adventures cuz I could understand everything. When I listened to the bank and salon preview, I thought its just a game where you move through the town and do things like going into the salon and fighting bank robbers. But in 2009 I would have everything to get these games! @BavisoftYou did a great job with both of your games, and I really like them. I just played GG yesterday and will start playing chillingham today. But the end is really disapointing. Its gonna be continued, thats what was been anounced, but were all waiting for ages now! Re: braillemone a pokemon port for visually impaired players

Hi Rachel and welcome to the forum. I personally look forward to playing the full game when the xp thing is fixed. I remember watching a lot of the pokemon cartoon and being irritated at not having access to many of the earlier games. While a couple of brouser ports exist, Ive yet to find one that actually has more to battle tactics than just hammering the attack, nor do they have things like physical descriptions of the pokemon, which would be great. If Regarding creddits or subscription, that sounds okay to me as far as things go, though i personally look forward to a fully explorable pokemon world with many to catch, me being more a single player bod, albeit Id be glad to support the game financially, and trading could be fun. My only concern with that is the legal thing, since I have heard nintendo are not friendly to freeware developements that have finances behind them. Perhaps accepting server donations rather than straight out subscription would b
e a good way around this (there are other audio games such as swamp, the audio fps that have run this model successfully). not that I dont think subscription is fair enough, I just would hate to see nintendo shut the project down. Ethically we all know that since nintendo havent bothered to make their pokemon games accessible, they arent exactly losing anything, however copywrite is a nasty thing.Speaking of copywrite One question, when you say require the pokemon rom do you mean legally or internally? ie, will the game physically not run without the rom file, or is it a legal requirement. Check in when you wish, however when youve got a playable alpha Ill be glad to post some news on site and a db page, since I think a lot of people could be interested in this one.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147083#p147083

Yeah. Perhaps the town isnt a very ideal place, or perhaps Bavisoft just did weird things with their loops, which was particularly noticeable in Chillingham. I take your point about the variation in Chillingham, but there was definitely something very cosy and cool about the saloon in GG, I think. Perhaps thats what it comes down to. Re: Hear movie sub titles with your screen reader

You could probably take this a step further, if this thing is reading subtitles, why not make subtitles that have things described instead of translate.Just something to throw out there.I brought this up on another forum ages ago, and a majority of responses preferred human speech describing instead, while some say this method would probably be cheaper. You could get more things described this way, and not have to wait for someone to read and mix the content. The drawback would mean the quality wouldnt be as good as the professionals that do these things, but thats to be expected.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147093#p147093

Yep I noticed the looping issue, but at the same time I liked the idea that there were swamps, forests as well as buildings like the church, library etc, it gave a little more in way of diversity than just a saloon and some gun fightts interspursed with some rather synthy music for atmosphere. The saloon was done well though, and I like the diversity of games, though interestingly enough this is one thing which perhaps is replicated in the silver dollar game by draconis, which obviously has the saloon with some bar mini games, but not the rest of it.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147098#p147098

I have the voices from JAWS 8 which I purchased.Im always delighted by the progress of Natural-sounding voices, but the obsession pisses me off. So what if its natural-sounding? If it isnt accurate, its a dead loss, and thats the end of it. It is, indeed, one of the less fortunate things about moving over to the Mac.Speaking of which, it
;s probably not such a great idea to actually distribute anything you dont have the rights to. So advising people to pirate is, er, dodgy, unless you know someone trustworthy. My advice is generally dont do it, obviously.I miss Keynote Gold, but HumanWare are still evil, as PulseData before. Im sorry but I dont believe eSpeak compares to either Keynote or Eloquence, good though it is.Orpheus isnt free. The SAPI bridge isnt the best, but it works. But, IMO, Orpheus 1 was better than Orpheus 2 anyway, so never mind. I have both; fortunately I still have Hal 5 lying around somewhere to install Orpheus 1, which later versions of Hal will then work with, via SAM. But this is not SAPI.I actually dont like Ivona and cant understand what the fuss is all about.Nextup will sell you some questionable stuff. Check carefully to make sure you arent getting locked voices.A source of Neospeech was Kurzweil 1000
, if you had that. Some magic is required to make the second disc install without the first. I remember reverse-engineering it once; you had to set a registry keep that pointed to a copy of the K1000 executable, which had to be of the correct size even if it wasnt actually the K1000 executable. Fun times. Cheers,SabahattinURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147099#p147099

2013-09-03 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — General Game Discussion: Nocturnus

Re: Some questions about Dimensions

Dimencions is a game that takes the sound straight from your ambience and background and tweeks it to fit the particular dimencion you are in. Everything in the ghost dimencion sounds ghostly, everything in the tranquil dimencion sounds tranquil, and everything in the unstable dimencion is completely whacked. The purpose of the game is to grab artifacts which are randomly generated as you stay in a dimencion, then use those artifacts to complete the dimencion. You do this through the beam, which requires quantum cells, which will drop into the dimencion over time and you can simply pick up, or you can buy them. AS you complete dimencions you unlock new ones; sometimes you unlock them by mistake. In truth I grew bored and frustrated with the game rather quickly, bored because there was so little to do, and frustrated because it wanted to spam my twitter followers, and probably would have done the same to my facebook friends if I had a facebook. I
dont care much for IOS gaming for that tpurpose; diceworld is all about you getting gold to play more bonus games with your gold, so that you can spam about your victories to get more gold, and the cycle continues. Hatchi, a virtual pet app does a lot of the same nonsense. Between all of these and 4square tweets, Im surprised I havent had a strange nightmare dealing with furry critters stalking my friends through a multiverse of sound that was generated from one simple dice roll. Is that a game in the works? Maybe; you decide.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147100#p147100

Re: Some questions about Dimensions

Id like the idea of Dimensions a lot more if it were accessible. Sadly there are some puzzles which are completely visual. This kind of gets to me, since the whole idea is audio immersion. And yes, the whole spam the world for points thing was very annoying too; I dont give the game access to Twitter for that reason. Being part of an audio world is perfectly possible without that, and yes I confess I find the drugs analogy quite fitting, in that the game is first and foremost about escapism. You can get most of that using Inception the app, though there of course you dont get much in the way of interaction.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147102#p147102

In GG you just need to fight robbers, thieves and raddlers. In Chillingham you have a background storyline which you are playing. But as im not familiar with The wizard of oz, I for example didnt know that water baloons thing, but I would have tried it anyway if I havent listened to the review of Kelly Sapergia. Re: braillemone a pokemon port for visually impaired players

Im thinking about modelling the copyright thing off of how the Pokemon MMO does it - basically, they have donations that give you a number of credits that can buy you perks. But in order to use online functions, they cost tokens. You can set up a subscription based donation that automatically sends a set amount of money each month, to have certain added functions. Some pokemon forums do this.Ill need to mess around with playtesting to get it just right but Im thinking about having trades and online battles cost a token each. Then, you get a set number of tokens each week if youre subscribed. If you want, you can exchange the excess tokens for supplies. In order to run the game later Im going to require that the English Pokemon Blue or Red rom is located in the folder of the game. Again, I cant tell you where to find them, but you can find them online. This is more legal padding, and again, it replicates Pokemon MMOs mode
l (which has been madly successful for 2 years)Unlike Pokemon MMO every piece of code is my stuff; the only thing that isnt are the characters and the sound; if Nintendo thought I was crossing the line I could manually edit everything. Theres a lot of Pokemon like clones on the market right now, so it would survive in that form if worst came to worst. Thats a last resort, though.Honestly Id be really surprised if Nintendo went after me though; Pokemon CAN be played by blind gamers but the ins and out of the game are hidden by visual text, thus cutting them off from the strategic element. Visual gamers show so much disinterest towards the game that they write it off as an interesting novelty. I cant really understand why this game would harvest their profits considering the nature of their market but the legal padding always helps.URL: http://forum.audiogame

Ah, gotcha. Yes, if the device came with a separate dongle then its generally not Bluetooth; itll be some proprietary pairing and these are sometimes (confusingly, IMO) called Wireless (which, of course, they are, but no more so than wireless LANs or Bluetooth). There is a standard way to use Bluetooth keyboards though, even if some manufacturers supply megaforceware bundles that are complete crap to operate them. Re: Sapi

@Sebby, a while back I created a 64-bit setup-installer which allows you to install the Realspeak voices from your Jaws 8 CD on a newer Windows 7 and Windows 8 64-bit machine. I created the new setup, because I purchased those voices as part of a Jaws and Openbook upgrade, but their installer would bomb out on 64-bit systems. So I fixed it by creating a new one and passed it out on the Audyssey list for people in a similar situation. However, I did so in a way that does not violate the license, because my installer is only a patch for the CD and doesnt actually contain the voices in the setup files.@Chris, none of the voices that come with Windows 8 and SAPI 5.5 are available for Windows 7 as far as I am aware of unless they are in the Windows 8 Platform SDK. I am afraid to say if you want David, Hazel, etc then you need to pay for them buy upgrading to Windows 8 which in some respects is a good thing. The voices are really and truly better.@Chrashmaster,
AKA Shaun, again this is a case of very poorly bad research. The Vocalizer voices for NVDA, which do not work with games, is $99. Last time I checked the Ivona voices are $45 per voice unless you buy them together in a language pack. For the love of heaven would you actually check your facts before blabbing your utter garbage on list. Um... why do you not want your mother to know you play Swamp? As I and others have said, paying for premium features will always be disliked by those unwilling to pay anything, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. Okay, so make Tide free, then introduce the larger missions or map shortcuts for paid users. Everyone will start asking for those free as well, because its not fair that some people can use them and others cant. There must be a division between free and paid, or theres no point in introducing the paid system at all. At $2 per month, a years subscription is $24, assuming Aprone doesnt offer a yearly discount. Just ask for $25 in cash as a Christmas or birthday present, and youve got Swamp for a full year. Im not a big fan of subscriptions either. Id rather pay $40 up front once for the game, than be forced to pay a monthly subscription fee. What if circumstances make it that I dont get much chance to play during that month, then theres money down the tubes for nothing. And considering Ive been sick for over six months and unable to play much, then I wouldve used up half my years subscription and gotten very little out of it. And as someone else a week or so back said, if Im going to start paying for the game, then Im going to expect Aprone devote more time to working on it, squashing bugs and that kind of thing. Re: Hear movie sub titles with your screen reader

The good part is, we can get audio described movies now in mp3 files, and open the subtitle with it. Then, it is perfect \o/Aprone, just let me suggest one little thing:Would be it possible to create a command and to shift the subttitle in time? I downloaded two different movies and tried some srt files, but they are speaking the subtitle one or two second later of the real speech. A and a , to shift the subttitle 0.5 seconds in time to the left or right would be amazing.Since I am not an English native speaker too, another feature, which I think that is not that difficult to implement as well, would be to disable and enable the automatic subtitle reading. I like to try to hear the movie in English, and when I do not understand something, I would read what is on the subtitle, and for that, we would need to be able to disable the automatic subtitle reading.I know that you are a busy guy, and if
you had developed this in c, c++ or python, I offer myself to code this changes if you give me some guidance on how to proceed over the things that you have already done.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147136#p147136

Well that would explain the reason why, if bluetooth is the specific capacity and wireless is the functionality. as I said most wireless keyboards Ive used for my pc have had their own dongle, indeed the one Im writing on right now works that way and theyre no more trouble to setup than a standard usb one, just plug and play. Again, a confusion of name over function I think.Oh, and dongle is a very silly word, it sounds sort of like something from an Eenid blightan childrens book, --- and then big ears said to noddy, have you got your dongle? but who ever said hardware and software terminology made sense, especially now were getting more and more heavily into coorporate branding.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147141#p147141

Re: Just started on we're alive

Well I am now up to chapter 13, and it does continue good, I love the realistic levels of incompetance, though it does seem the main characters are amazingly lucky :d. Ill likely go and start grabbing season four when I get there, indeed it was partly the fact that season four was just starting that made me want to begin on the series since I do enjoy long and complete stories. As to depressing, well frankly its the zombocalypse! even before that going back to the very routes of appocalyptic fiction, war of the worlds etc, its never been exactly happy . Indeed this is one reason I so admire justin cronins work, since being set alternately just before or 90years after the zombocalypse, there is something of a different take on the hole optimism bit, indeed the downfall of civilization etc is barely covered and the series focuses mostly on w
hy the zombocalypse started in the first place and then, 90 years into the future how things might be rebuilt. This was again a problem I had with Mark Tufos Zombi fallout series, the main character basically treated the hole thing like a computer game and seemed to find the zombies an excuse for toilet humour jokes and shouting slogans. With were alive the balance seems very right, indeed I do complement the series on doing what I always tend to think fantasy should do, realistic characters in unrealistic situations, and seeing how they survive, indeed that to me is far more positive than some sort of invinsible military hard case mowing down the zombi hoards.then again, Ive only just started season 2 so well have to see how depressing it gets .URL: http://for

Hello everyone,Ok, could someone please please give me the technical background to this?1. To my knowledge, the Echo 2 is a card, not a software synth. Is Jayson here responsible for all the hacking of the circuitry to get this to run in the emulator? Thats some super technical stuff right there if so! You should be hired by a great company because not many could do that! I mean, youre reverse-engineering a speech chip into software!2. Does the emulator contain the speech data, or the individual disks? I mean, Ive been trying to see and poke around with the emulator and how it works but Im just not sure. Im so curious as to this.Im actually more interested in the technicalities behind this than the games themselves. How do you reverse engineer a speech chip? Maybe I could buy a rom tool (ee prom reader) and reverse engineer my speakout this way? I mean, this just opens the doors for so many things! He actually decompiled a sp
eech chip!Id be curious to have at least a slight descrpbtion of it all, honestly. URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147144#p147144

Re: braillemone a pokemon port for visually impaired players

@Rachel, nice thinking on the legal point. though myself Id not particularly count pokemon games as accessible, not just because of missing out story and exploration, but because of time and effort needed for a blind player using faqs for menue memorization, knowing all the pokemones attacks (yes the pokemon identify themselves by sound but not the name, damage etc of their attack), and so on. This all apart from atmosphere missing. The subscription sounds a nice idea when you put it in terms of a regular donation system, rather than a straight out subscription payment.Ill look forward to trying this. Regarding the rom, one method Ive seen used to skirt around legal issues in the past is either to have a disclaimer with the package stating that if you find a copy of this file please remove it since you legally cant use it (the pc port of the Apple rpg Eamon series, eamon deluxe does this in order to redistribute
dos basic), or perhaps to have someone separately host the appropriate file with a similar disclaimer, perhaps on a file sharing service, I once downloaded a great version of prince of persia (not playable from a blindness perspective but nice with limited vision), that did this. At least that way you could insure that people are all working from the same file, since manifestly there are various different roms available and itd be a shame to get the wrong thing. On an unrelated note, would you considder writing some basic pokemon faqs for those unfamiliar with the game and battle system? since obviously not everyone who will be playing this has extensive pokemon experience, and itd be nice to get some new players, indeed myself, most of my practical experience has been from the cartoon series (brock and team rocket are both awsome), so Id appreciate at least some instructions. While I know this might be a little premature, I have noticed this
problem with a couple of brouser based pokemon ports, even though they dont tend to include all the rules or have complex mechanics.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147154#p147154

Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

Hi,Wo, wo, wo! Slow down a moment there! I didnt do any of the work to get the Echo II emulated. But heres a very brief overview of how it works. The Echo cards use a particular speech chip from Texas Instruments, the TMS5220, to actually generate speech. As it turns out, other computers use this chip as well, so someone decided to create a piece of software to emulate it within MESS, the emulator Im using. So naturally, it was only a matter of time until someone decided to emulate the Echo cards, since they use the same chip.So as you can see, this is the real deal. This is not a dirty trick, bogus, or a fake using dummy disk images that trigger wav files at appropriate points. This is the real thing. If you run a program that asks for your name, you can enter your real name, whatever it is, and when appropriate, it will spit it right back out at you. In the same situation, randomly mash on the keyboard, and itll throw a ton of silly-so
unding nonsense at you. No parlor trick using wav files could do that.To answer another question, the software called Textalker, present on every disk Ive included, is responsible for converting English text into control signals to be sent to the Echo, and thus, the TMS5220. So the Echo card doesnt even have English phonemes (word sounds) on it, thats all done by the Textalker software.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147155#p147155

Re: What are differences between devices that are wireless or bluetooth?

On a range front, I know the wireless dongle keyboard for my pc has much greater range than the bluetooth one I have for my iphone, heck, I can even go into another room and have it work if I want, though I am not sure if that is just to do with the equipment rather than anything else, after all usually you dont need long range for wireless devices on a mobile phone as you will have the phone on you, where is a wireless computer keyboard could be used (as I indeed use it), throughout one or two rooms. Regarding why they make specific wireless devices, actually such devices predate bluetooth capability, I was using one back in 2005, and there are still older machines that dont have a bluetooth connection (my pc doesnt), thus making the functionality virtually the same, though the one bluetooth keyboard I tried for my pc as I said was fairly crappy due to its own stupid software. Regarding headsets, to me at least a specific bluetoot
h headset would be a disadvantage, since things like my hifi system or a standard tv do not come with bluetooth, indeed this is the problem with a lot of proprietary hardware connections. I know there are already headphones that will only run on an iphone due to number of bands, and I dont believe its too long in the future before apple change the jacks so that a standard 3.5 set of headphones wont fit so only licensed manufacturers devices can be used with their equipment, just as they have done with the lightning connector. Its very annoying, and just another part of corporate monopolies, since heaven forbid that you should be using a device with your iphone from a company who did not! pay apple for the patant. In fairness apple arent the first company to do this, microsoft have been trying it for years, and even before then, there were the various video cassette wars which people may remember. Re: Just started on we're alive

@truegamer, I suspected as much, both regarding rereads and regarding character deaths, but actually I enjoy series where characters are not safe. That isnt to say I like characters being killed, but the fact that characters could! die in any situation makes the hole thing feel much more urgent. I really cant stand those books or films where you know! just who is ggoing to survive, and even if the protagonist is swimming for their lives away from a pack of rabid robotic sharks, through a hurrican, with the alien space fleet firing lasers at them and captain Davy jones trying to nail them with a magical harpoon, it sort of becomes a little flat when you know that because theyre the protagonist theyre going to make it, . This is one reason why I am not generally much of a fan of the super hero genre, (with some exceptions admitedly), since you gene
rally know! just who is going to survive and how everything will work out. Though interestingly enough I did recently see kickass Ii, which surprised me, though kickass Id rather rank as one of those exceptions :d.Getting back to were alive Personalities are actually something I like in the series and something theyve done fairly well. Itd be easy for characters like bert, michael, Pegs or rily to be very one dimentional, strong leader, loyal sidekick, compassionate damsel in distress, tough but secretly vunlerable female, yet the series is too cleverly written for that sort of thing to happen. I think my only real crytitcism is that the series is a little too quick in places, throwing you from action sequence to action sequence without much break. The action is pretty good, but this doesnt really leave bags of time for anything else, heck, virtually nobody has speculated on how the zombi outbreak started, and though some investigat
ions into the nature of things began they didnt get far due to repeating cryses. I also felt that the series was a little too quick to say look at the mallers, theyre bad guys since really it seemed people were snapping to judgements just on the behaviour of one psychotic girl (whos brother actually tried guarded reason). While this wasnt everyones fault, I did rather feel things escalated a bit too quickly without enough provocation, even allowing for everyone being on edge. again, this was one thing which John wyndham got right in day of the triffids, since there, it takes time for the different styles of surviver groups to polarise, indeed one of the main antagonists at the beginning of the book is simply someone trying to do the right thing in the wrong way, or maybe its just that back in the 1950s when triffids is originally set people were less likely to shoot first and ask questions late

[[wow]], with that low parameters you can forget about playing this most tragic MK port on PC.Sadly or not, its really BAD port with too high requirements.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147175#p147175

Re: loquendo tts is the company gone under?

since loquendos merged with nuance, technicly speaking, I suppose the old loquendo voicesre indeed abandonware?if it is so, it shouldnt be a problem to distribute them ,right?URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147178#p147178

Re: Just started on we're alive

I think were alive is one of the best podcasts Ive listened to thus far. The acting is amazing. Season 1 was a little slow, but the other seasons are much more action packed. I think by the time you get through season 2, youll love it. I think my favorite character is birt.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147182#p147182
