I suppose you could ask them whether they can tell the difference first, while sighted, record their answers, and then try it blind. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Exact Audio Copy and compression options
Hi i''ve gone thru the following 2 tutorials which I recommend to setup EAC. http://chrismyden.com/bestmp3guide.php and http://users.pandora.be/satcp/eac-qs-en.htm In the first one there is a required DLL download link (for Windows NT, XP users) as well as an optional config file and the latter takes you thru step by step in configuring EAC options and drive configurations. Since I want to output to lossless format it seems that the only option is WAV format which EAC natively supports. But, much to my surprise, the WAV option in EAC in itself has a variety of codecs to choose from, some of them lossy. The 2 that seem to be 'high' quality are 'Microsoft PCM converter' 44.1 kHz/16 Bit. and 'WindowsMedia' 160 kbps/44 kHz. My first question is: Which one is 'best' for quality and Slimserver compatibility? My second question is are there any DLLs/plugins for EAC that allow output to other lossless formats, such as Apple Lossless or FLAC? -- mmg_fan mmg_fan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33763 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

They offer a nice tonal balance and very good extension for a speaker its size. Most importantly, it's not harsh or bright, and it's very listenable. Hard to evaluate it's imaging/soundstaging/etc, just because I haven't spent a lot of time dealing with things like placement and such ( I do notice that they do produce a stereo image with some depth, but am not going to comment on whether it's pinpoint or anything silly like that)I don't think most people will be using them on stands and tweaking their placement much, so I've just been listening to them with them sitting on a bookcase (although admittedly I've put some cones under them to raise them off the surface). All the analysis is done on the power line waveform. There is no indication of what that waveform causes at the speaker. Sure it looks awful, but by the time you run it through a transformer, rectifier, a bunch of capacitance, and maybe even a voltage regulator, what difference could it possibly make? [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Upgradeability
The Transporter specifications confuse me as I am unsure what limitations are upgradeable versus fixed for the future. I was most surprised and disappointed to learn that TP has a digital variable analog output. That did not fit with the audiophile label and has caused me to retain a pre-amp that I thought I could replace. There is no chance that can be upgraded until/if the whole machine goes to TP2. What about sample rate support? The AKM DACs support the 88.2 sample rate many of us are excited about because of Linn's downloads, but TP does not. This is not, so far as I am aware, anything to do with hardware - input or output. Could we expect a firmware upgrade or must we forever destroy the integrity of the Studio Master to get a playable file? Less important is the WiFi standard. Many g network adaptors can be firm/soft-ware upgraded to Draft-n (Apple did this recently) to provide more capacity for streaming and more range. Is this something than can be upgraded to give us a better bit-stream, especially for higher data formats on more crowded home networks. Least important is the Ethernet wire standard that is stuck at 10/100 and misses on Gigabit Ethernet. There is almost no cost differential in a built-in Gigabit Ethernet versus the slower ones. I care most about the 88.2 sample rate and the WiFi Draft-n support. As it stands, I will not by the current TP. Either it will be improved or I will use a direct PC interface not a Slim appliance. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Upgradeability
I think you will find that the 88.2 Linn masters even downsampled to 44.1 / 24-bit sound pretty fantastic and clearly better than the equivalent 44.1/16-bit CD's (which in themselves sound great!) I'm sure that 88.2 native support will arrive but I doubt many folks will notice a real improvement. For me the leap to 24-bit is more significant (as it was in my studio when I had one...) than the higher sampling rate. YMMV. -- Phil Leigh Phil Leigh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=85 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33769 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Upgradeability
I have comments about a couple of your concerns: PNCD;189082 Wrote: I was most surprised and disappointed to learn that TP has a digital variable analog output. That did not fit with the audiophile label and has caused me to retain a pre-amp that I thought I could replace. The digital volume control in the Transporter (and Squeezebox) has been *very* carefully programmed so as to introduce the least possible degradation of resolution. Indeed, if you're using 16 bit sources (eg. ripped from CDs), then there is *no* digital degradation whatsoever until the volume gets below -30dB. There have been a number of threads on this subject on these forums - try taking a look to see if any of them reassure you. The accuracy of the digital volume control in the TP and SB is far greater than the tracking accuracy of even the most expensive analogue potentiometer (and I suspect also even the most carefully constructed resister network stepped attenuator). FWIW, I use the Transporter's analogue outputs direct into power amps, and the removal of the preamp from the signal chain resulted in a significant sound quality improvement. Less is more, as they say. PNCD;189082 Wrote: Least important is the Ethernet wire standard that is stuck at 10/100 and misses on Gigabit Ethernet. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] BEST sounding noise cancelling headphones
For flying, the Etymotics ER-4s is the best I've heard. Isolation is almost complete. I've got to take an earpiece out to hear the flight attendant talking in my ear, and sound is great. These are not the most efficient IEM, but the ER-4P version is an easier load for a player, and provides the same isolation. Some people have comfort issues with Etymotics, but I do not. Sonically, the Ultimate Ears UE-10 Pro has the best sonics I've heard in any IEM, and is better than most full-size headphones. The UE-10 has to be custom fitted to your ear with a mold taken by an audiologist, and is a good deal more expensive than the Etymotics. Despite the custom fit, I get less isolation than I do with the Etymotics. My reference headphones are the Sony R10 and Sennheiser Orpheus. -- hirsch hirsch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7288 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33748 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Many g network adaptors can be firm/soft-ware upgraded to Draft-n (Apple did this recently) to provide more capacity for streaming and more range. Is this something than can be upgraded to give us a better bit-stream, especially for higher data formats on more crowded home networks. The wifi card in the transporter is a mini-pci device. If price/demand make the change necessary, SD could offer an 802.11n upgrade. I'm not saying they will, 11g provides sufficent bandwidth for several standard FLAC streams. Also, why would you want draft support, this stuff is basicaly throw-away. If you remember 802.11b+ that some companies like d-link were selling, this stuff was Draft 802.11g.. but of course the standard changed between draft and final, and if you have an 11b+ device, it's useless on a 11g-only network. Software updates aside, using draft level standards is a bad idea. Especially for Slim Devices. Least important is the Ethernet wire standard that is stuck at 10/100 and misses on Gigabit Ethernet. There is almost no cost differential in a built-in Gigabit Ethernet versus the slower ones. You are missing one thing. I believe the NIC in the transporter is not an external chip. It is built-in to the main Ubicom CPU chip. There is no need for gige anyway, even un-compressed audio is fairly low bandwidth. FLAC compressed CD audio only needs 0.8-1.0 Mbps. You would need 100 Transporters to saturate the slimserver at 100mbit. Even if you did that, you could easily run the slimserver with gige, and the transporters at 100mbit. Ethernet switches will just take care of the rate conversion. -- SuperQ SuperQ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2139 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33769 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Little office/bedroom system
At risk of taking the thread off topic (or, perhaps, deeply on-topic), what do people really want from an office / bedroom / kitchen system? For the office I use (FLACs on) my iPod with the rubbish supplied headphones - most of the time I need to hear what is going on, and need to hear the phone ring. Occasionally, when I'm deep in code, I need some Bach, but sadly those moments are getting rarer. If my payscale moves the way I want it to, they'll stop altogether soon. The supplied headphones are better than my Etymotics as I can hear the hubbub! My kitchen system sounds nice but inoffensive: NAD 402 tuner, Mind-Da amp and Harbeth speakers. I use it for performance on (BBC radio) 3, a (generally) stunning live classical programme which coincides nicely with my cooking times. My computer system (T-Amp into Wharfedale 8.1s) is really used only for games and TV (my computer is my TV). I've seen people with decent office systems but I don't know many jobs that allow you to really get into the music. For me, an office system couldn't be that good - I'd never get any work done! It needs to sound convincing but not gripping. My own main system would be totally inappropriate, as it is the kind of sound that draws you in (rather than impresses you with its frequency response and dynamics, say). So my definition of what you need for different environments: Main system - just bl**dy good :) Kitchen - 'nice' and top-tapping, fun to chop veg to Office - just about good enough so it doesn't detract as background Presumably you just need a bedroom system to pay Barry White, but I'm married so I don't need one :) Adam -- adamslim SB3 into Derek Shek d2, Shanling CDT-100, Rotel RT-990BX, Esoteric Audio Research 859, Living Voice Auditorium IIs, Nordost and Anti-cables http://www.last.fm/user/AdamSlim/ adamslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7355 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33584 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

My main home system... yeah, that's the shrine to the Gods of Music... At work, I use headphones for anything music related. I have a Panasonic RPC300 noise-canceling pair there that is great when it comes to fulfilling its function of (a) isolating me from the world around me (people have to be loud or physical); and (b) providing good audio quality for the 192k MP3s I typically listen to in a work environment. 90% of the time very quietly, and mostly it is either new age relaxing stuff or classical. As far as satellite systems in the house go, I have a bunch of CD based ones. I have historically always created favorites mic CDs that I'' listen to in different satellite systems - car, bedroom, kitchen, garden, house gym. I plan on gradually buying SBs for all of these systems, and perhaps upgrade/optimize them in the process where it makes sense. I do *not* need the type of audiophile quality I have in my main system in any of those remote places - I just need a sound quality that is not offensive, and over time decent satellite systems have come together for the bedroom, garden and the home gym system. The main system in the living room serves as the ultimate audiophile system when in fron of it, and also -because of the open area- as the music server for the kitchen and dining room, all directly linked to the living room the main system is in. The family room -on the other side of the kichen- houses the TV and associated entertainment stuff (I am not a TV person myself, though). The periphery systems just have to offer solid sounf though, and I plan on buying 2 SBs and one set of Aduioengine 5s very soon to extend the SS realm! -- pablolie pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33584 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
