ncpl;196780 Wrote:
I absolutely agree, but, Andyoz stated that the improved SQ is not worth

 IMHO.

I don't get this, personally. I don't think being an audiophile means
you don't care about how much something costs. To me, it means you
care about getting really good quality sound. True, one corollary is
that you're willing to spend a lot more money than the average person
to get it. But that doesn't mean price is irrelevant.

The vast majority of us still have budget constraints. We can spend,
at most, $X on our rig, even if $X is a comparatively large number. So
why would value be irrelevant?

Suppose Acme speakers cost $10,000, and have a sound quality level of
9/10. Then Newco comes out with speakers having exact same sound
quality -- 9/10 -- but costing only $5,000.

Which are you going to buy? (Assume build quality, looks, and all
other factors are equal.) Newco, right?

Now suppose the Newco speakers have a sound quality of 8.999/10 -- a
very slight, practically unnoticeable decrease. I take it your point
is that the true audiophile will spend the full $10k for the Acme
speakers just to get that marginal increase in sound quality.

But there are other parts to your rig. Almost invariably, you can get
a bigger increase in sound quality if you take the extra $5,000 and
spend it on some other component. Maybe by spending that cash on a new
set of monoblocks, you can raise your overall sound quality from 9/10 to
9.5/10, even with the Newco speakers.

Wouldn't even the pickiest audiophile want to do just that -- unless
they literally had no budget constraint, and could therefore do both?

So when someone says, -The improved SQ is not worth the extra cash,-
might they really mean, -I can get a greater improvement in SQ by
spending the extra cash on something else-?

No digital input, but that's hardly worth thousands of dollars more.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter or Tact 2150XDM

2007-02-12 Thread Mike Anderson

I don't own the Tact, but I do use the SB2 in conjunction with a DEQX
unit, and I previously used a Behringer DEQ2496.

My sense is that the ability to do room correction will dramatically
outweigh the subtle changes you get from the difference in the DAC, or
even a different amp.

Having control over the frequency response of your speakers is a truly
awesome ability. And there is simply no doubt about how substantial
the difference is - you can A/B it, and it is amazingly dramatic.
Forget about a blind test, it would be totally unnecessary.

By contrast, a lot of people would be hard-pressed to tell the
difference between the DACs (and I'm guessing, the amps, depending on
exactly what changes you're making).

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Thoughts on DEQX PDC-2.6P and Bi-amping

2007-01-14 Thread Mike Anderson

I've been thinking about bi-amping (or possibly tri-amping) my Magnepan
3.6R's and the best way to go about it.

I've seen a couple threads about this, but is there anyone out there
actually using one of these:

http://www.deqx.com/PDC26P-Preamp.html

How is the sound quality? I currently use a Benchmark DAC1 running
into a Musical Fidelity KW500 integrated amp, using a Behringer DEQ2496
for room correction. I'd have to sell those components and spring for
the DEQX + the amplifiers.

Any thoughts on this approach? I've heard great things about
bi-amping, and I'm a big believer in room correction, so the DEQX is
really intriguing.

But I'd be curious to hear what people have to say about the sound
quality. Is it worth the bucks?

Right, on the 3.6Rs, the main crossover is external, and bi-amping
pretty easy to do (and in fact it seems to be designed for that
purpose).

Not sure about tri-amping though.

other speaker. Feed the two amp inputs with the outputs of the 2496
(again assuming you can independently filter the outputs; otherwise
you'd need two 2496s), with high and low pass filters set. Then see
how it sounds compared to the standard crossover.

Wow, that's a need idea. However, I do generally find it hard to
assess the quality of setup with just one speaker playing. Sounds
very... flat, as you would imagine.

Alternately if you have another amp you could do this with a mono
 signal bi-amped to both speakers.

I do have two amps, but they're both integrated amps. Is there someway
I can make sure the volumes are properly coordinated at all times?

Well it's true that you can delay one channel versus another using the
Behringer unit, but if I understand correctly, when EQ is applied to do
the room correction, it can cause phase changes even within a channel.
Part of the idea of the DEQX is that it is supposed to give you EQ

a good amp to drive them. That will at least take the room effect out
of the equation.

Personally though, the added reverb effect of the listening room is
really what brings the recording to life, provided it's done properly.

That's where a good room-correction system comes into play -- primarily
to deal with the nodes in the bass frequencies. I suppose it's
possible to deal with those using room treatment alone, but for most of
us living in real-world circumstances (with wives, and limited

Cable burn-in is critical for cables that have been cryogenically

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 + high end DAC versus high end CD Player?

2006-06-12 Thread Mike Anderson

For sound quality, how would you compare the SB3 running into a high end
DAC with a high end CD player?

I'm having a debate with someone who thinks you simply can't beat a top
quality CD player, no matter how good your DAC is.

I'm not an engineer, but I can't imagine why this would be the case,
assuming you've got error-free rips of your CDs.

Can any engineers or technophiles address this issue?

thanks

You have a single chassis. No interconnects. You already know the pre

And I already have a tube pre matched with SS amp in my Pathos Logos

So I'd turn around and ask, Why separates? The only advantage I can
see is that you can swap out one part without changing the other. But
some of us like to buy gear and hold it rather than playing the musical

I'm taking the optical out of an SB2, into a DAC1, then balanced cables

Magnepan 1.6QRs.

It sounds excellent to me. I've never tried blind A/Bing it with the
SB2 analog outs, but I bet I could tell the difference.

I also like being able to put a 24/96 signal into the DAC1 (e.g. from a

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Pathos Systems

2006-05-17 Thread Mike Anderson

I have the Pathos Logos. I take the optical out of the SB2, into a
Benchmark DAC1, and balanced cables into the Logos. Speakers are
Magnepan 1.6QR.

It's a fine amp. BUT, unless you have the need for the power -- e.g.
you're using inefficient speakers like my Magnepans -- my advice is to
go with the Classic One (second version).

I tried the Classic One, and I would have kept it except it just didn't
deliver enough power for my speakers - hence my moving up to the Logos.
Apart from the power, and a little less low end, the sound quality of
the Classic One was about as good as the Logos. Very sweet, musical,
smooth delicious sound. I like it.

I got my Logos used, as well as the Classic One. I did have one issue
with the Logos: The remote control sensor went out soon after I got it.
The amp still worked fine, you just couldn't use the remote.

The company was nice enough to send me a brand new one though (even
though I'd bought the amp used), and it was easy to install myself, so
no biggie. There's still a strange thing it does though: every once in
a while I'll turn it on, and the volume reads 88 -- but I just turn it
back off and on again, and it's fine.

Overall I'm very pleased with the amp. Don't know that I would have
paid full price for a new one, but if you can one used for $2900 or
so, it's a good deal.

I've read that. I enjoy reading about folks' blind testing,

But it was just one test; other people need to replicate the test in
order to rely on them with confidence. For example, there might have
been too much background noise at the test, or the speakers weren't
high quality enough or whatever. (I don't recall the exact conditions

So I'll remain fairly agnostic about this stuff until these sorts of
tests are replicated. Unfortunately, few people do them even once...

Most DVD players - even cheap ones - have optical digital output. I
take the digital out from my DVD player, and run it into my Benchmark

This is because the calculation of an exact p-value under the usual

On the other hand, if the difference between A and B is so slight that

Magnepan MMG's are $550 direct from the factory - deal of the century

(Not sure about the W's, but they can't be much different.)

And if you want to, after four months you can trade them back in for
full value towards a set of higher-value Magnepans. That's what I'm
doing to get the 1.6qr's.

Those people are just like drug dealers -- they give you a little taste

2006-01-15 Thread Mike Anderson

MMG's are not true audiophile, no -- but they are still great speakers
for the money, and they will let you figure out if you really like the
planar sound.

The main drawback is that the sweet spot for MMG's is very small.
Second, they don't have a lot of low end. In an optimal setup, they're
flat only down to 55-60hz or so.

A subwoofer is a prerequisite if you care about bass a lot. I got a
Dayton 10 sub when I got my MMG's, but I'm looking to sell it now that
I'm getting the 1.6qr's.

A lot of people will tell you planar speakers require good current, not
necessarily a lot of power. It tends to be the case that high-watt amps
can provide the current, so people tend to associate them with requiring
lots of watts.

The exact same thing happened to me. I got the Squeezebox, decided I'd
like to upgrade my system, and bought Magnepan MMG's (in addition to a
bunch of other stuff.

I don't know anything about that amp, but I would encourage you to:

1) look into buying a used amp -- you can get great deals that way;

2) check out some of the audio forums on the internets, e.g.:

http://forums.audioreview.com/

http://www.audioasylum.com/index.html

There are a bunch of reviews of NAD amps at the first site (as well as
other equipment.) Here are some reviews of the amp you're interested
in:

http://tinyurl.com/7wyrg

Be forewarned! You're about to get into an extremely addictive
hobby!!!

I bought the MMG's and loved them so much I decided to bump up to the
1.6qr's. Then I had to upgrade my amp to get everything out of them.
Then I had to upgrade to a Benchmark DAC1, etc.

Make sure you prepare your wife amply for your new hobby; now would be
a great time to buy her some new jewelry!

This has been done before - someone on a web forum made a post about it
once (could probably find it):

A dozen or so audiophiles sat around in a room for a day and tried to
tell the difference between a junk power cord and super high-end power
cords on a very high-end stereo setup. They listened to a large
number of samples in a randomized, double-blind experiment under
halfway rigorous conditions.

The result? No difference. You didn't even need to calculate a
