I don't think being an audiophile means you don't care about how much something costs. To me, it means you care about getting really good quality sound. True, one corollary is that you're willing to spend a lot more money than the average person to get it. But that doesn't mean price is irrelevant. The vast majority of us still have budget constraints. We can spend, at most, $X on our rig, even if $X is a comparatively large number. So why would value be irrelevant? Suppose Acme speakers cost $10,000, and have a sound quality level of 9/10. Then Newco comes out with speakers having exact same sound quality -- 9/10 -- but costing only $5,000. Which are you going to buy? (Assume build quality, looks, and all other factors are equal.) Newco, right? Now suppose the Newco speakers have a sound quality of 8.999/10 -- a very slight, practically unnoticeable decrease. I take it your point is that the true audiophile will spend the full $10k for the Acme speakers just to get that marginal increase in sound quality. But there are other parts to your rig. Almost invariably, you can get a bigger increase in sound quality if you take the extra $5,000 and spend it on some other component. Maybe by spending that cash on a new set of monoblocks, you can raise your overall sound quality from 9/10 to 9.5/10, even with the Newco speakers. Wouldn't even the pickiest audiophile want to do just that -- unless they literally had no budget constraint, and could therefore do both? So when someone says, -The improved SQ is not worth the extra cash,- might they really mean, -I can get a greater improvement in SQ by spending the extra cash on something else-? -- Mike Anderson 'FREE RADICAL RADIO!' I don't own the Tact, but I do use the SB2 in conjunction with a DEQX unit, and I previously used a Behringer DEQ2496. My sense is that the ability to do room correction will dramatically outweigh the subtle changes you get from the difference in the DAC, or even a different amp. Having control over the frequency response of your speakers is a truly awesome ability. And there is simply no doubt about how substantial the difference is - you can A/B it, and it is amazingly dramatic. Forget about a blind test, it would be totally unnecessary. By contrast, a lot of people would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the DACs (and I'm guessing, the amps, depending on exactly what changes you're making). -- Mike Anderson 'FREE RADICAL RADIO!' [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Thoughts on DEQX PDC-2.6P and Bi-amping
I've been thinking about bi-amping (or possibly tri-amping) my Magnepan 3.6R's and the best way to go about it. I've seen a couple threads about this, but is there anyone out there actually using one of these: http://www.deqx.com/PDC26P-Preamp.html How is the sound quality? I currently use a Benchmark DAC1 running into a Musical Fidelity KW500 integrated amp, using a Behringer DEQ2496 for room correction. I'd have to sell those components and spring for the DEQX + the amplifiers. Any thoughts on this approach? I've heard great things about bi-amping, and I'm a big believer in room correction, so the DEQX is really intriguing. But I'd be curious to hear what people have to say about the sound quality. Feed the two amp inputs with the outputs of the 2496 (again assuming you can independently filter the outputs; otherwise you'd need two 2496s), with high and low pass filters set. Then see how it sounds compared to the standard crossover. Wow, that's a need idea. However, I do generally find it hard to assess the quality of setup with just one speaker playing. Sounds very... flat, as you would imagine. Alternately if you have another amp you could do this with a mono signal bi-amped to both speakers. I do have two amps, but they're both integrated amps. I'm not sure the price/quality ratio is any better. My understanding is that integrateds tend to be cheaper than the equivalent pre/amp combo. You have a single chassis. No interconnects. You already know the pre and amp section are well-matched. And I already have a tube pre matched with SS amp in my Pathos Logos (which, BTW, sounds fantastic with the 1.6QRs). So I'd turn around and ask, Why separates? The only advantage I can see is that you can swap out one part without changing the other. I have the Pathos Logos. I take the optical out of the SB2, into a Benchmark DAC1, and balanced cables into the Logos. Speakers are Magnepan 1.6QR. It's a fine amp. BUT, unless you have the need for the power -- e.g. you're using inefficient speakers like my Magnepans -- my advice is to go with the Classic One (second version). I tried the Classic One, and I would have kept it except it just didn't deliver enough power for my speakers - hence my moving up to the Logos. Apart from the power, and a little less low end, the sound quality of the Classic One was about as good as the Logos. Very sweet, musical, smooth delicious sound. I like it. I got my Logos used, as well as the Classic One. I did have one issue with the Logos: The remote control sensor went out soon after I got it. The amp still worked fine, you just couldn't use the remote. The company was nice enough to send me a brand new one though (even though I'd bought the amp used), and it was easy to install myself, so no biggie. There's still a strange thing it does though: every once in a while I'll turn it on, and the volume reads 88 -- but I just turn it back off and on again, and it's fine. Overall I'm very pleased with the amp. Don't know that I would have paid full price for a new one, but if you can one used for $2900 or so, it's a good deal. -- Mike Anderson 'FREE RADICAL RADIO!' MMG's are not true audiophile, no -- but they are still great speakers for the money, and they will let you figure out if you really like the planar sound. The main drawback is that the sweet spot for MMG's is very small. Second, they don't have a lot of low end. In an optimal setup, they're flat only down to 55-60hz or so. A subwoofer is a prerequisite if you care about bass a lot. I got a Dayton 10 sub when I got my MMG's, but I'm looking to sell it now that I'm getting the 1.6qr's. Can anyone advise on the best mod for an SB2 -- e.g. Red Wine v. Bolder? I'm useless with a solder gun so I'd prefer someone else to do it. tass Wrote: The style of music can definately affect how well files compress. I've noticed on the highest compression of FLAC that pop/rock/normal(?) music compresses high 60s to mid 70% ratio. Things like classical music that have a lot of low-volume, silent or single instrument sections can compress much better than this and can even get to sub 50%. Noise is also a lot harder to compress than pure tones. OK, well I set up EAC/FLAC on my PC according to all the instructions, and it seems to be running OK. However, it's still taking somewhere between 5-10 minutes to rip most of my CDs. I've got hundreds of CDs, so it's a major undertaking. Question: What am I losing by not running EAC in secure mode? Doing so substantially cuts down on the ripping time. So how much difference does it really make? Can I use secure mode on those CDs I really care about (about 20% of them) and unsecure mode on the rest of them, or would that present problems? -- Mike Anderson ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Well, I'd have to get an external/firewire drive or something, so that'd be a little more expensive than $100, and I'd have to keep it hooked to my laptop (I'm assuming). But I'll do a blindfold test on a random sample of songs and see how much difference I can detect between lossless and 320. If I can tell the difference, I'll step up.
