Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter knob as volume control only

2009-10-16 Thread ModelCitizen

I think this was asked recently (and that there is a long thread about
it), the answer being no.

I used to run my Transporter directly into a Bryston 4B-SST and then
into PMC OB1s, first using the balanced cabled and latterly using normal
phonos (as the hifi wouldn't go loud enough with the baslanced cables).

Now I run my SB++ directly into the Bryston instead.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter on the way vs my exsisting SB3

2009-01-17 Thread ModelCitizen

Dacs are funny things. The qualitative change in the sound swapping
around DACs is nowhere near as great as changing your speakers, or even
repositoning them. Many causual hifi users cannot distinguish between
dacs and many audiophiles could not distuinguish between dacs when used
with anything but reasonably high end hifi equipment.

That said, the apparently very small difference in sound exchanging a
dac can make can determine whether the music sounds good or not, whether
you tap your foot or not. It's almost more of an emotional thing.
Whether this is due to jitter or not I have no idea.

That said, the sound of the Tranporter is very removed from the sound
of the sb3. The difference should be immediately obvious if the hifi
gear you are using is good quality and transparent. It cannot be said
whether this difference is solely due to the dac though (in fact, it's
certain it is not).

Whether you prefer the sound of the Transporter over the SB3 depends
upon which device makes makes you tap your foot more vigorously. Well,
it does for me anyway. :-)

If you want 24/96 you'll have to get a Transporter, but if 24/48 will

does sound much better than the SB3 (via it's own analogue outs, no
need for a third party DAC).

I've tried the SB3 with various DACS (inc. Benchmark) and PSUs but the
SB+ sounded best to me.

Does the receiver (SBR) have the same problem through the analogue outs

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Is Boom good enough for audiophile use

2008-08-30 Thread ModelCitizen

I agree entirely with Phil. The sound of this small box is just superb.
I've not heard any device of this type or price point that sounds
anywhere near as good. It certainly does not have anything of the
clinical digital sound or the boxy hollowness commonly associated with
this type of device (indeed, it's quite weighty). The sound is rounded,
well balanced and very clear. I keep the device on my bedside table and
if I turn the volume up to 90% it serves the whole top story of my
(five bedroom) house.

I listen to fair bit of electronic music and the Boom reproduces it
extremely well. I also listen to a reasonable amount of voice/acoustic
guitar stuff and this also sounds wonderful.

I'm just amazed that Logitech have managed to knock it out for the low
price they have.

I'd like to get another but can't figure out where I'd put it
unless I replace my kitchen SB3 rig.. now there's a thought.

Did I mention that the bass is surprisingly good too? Even the
Stereo-XL works well (not something I've ever liked in any other device
I've tried).

Of course, it's a different paradigm, with some shortcomings compared
to the slim approach. Biggest is probably lack of multi-zone playback,
but then again SD hasn't exactly mastered that one yet and few
 audiophiles are concerned with multi-zone.
Lack of wireless networking. +10! You can bet that will save them a
massive amount of development and support costs (gathering from what
we've seen at SD), as well as saving their customers endless headaches.
If someone wants a wireless connection they can attach it to a WAP.
Very smart. Of course the internal hard drive means that no network is
 even necessary.

Upon reflection I agree with all of this, apart from the zoning bit. I
don't pretend to understand NaimNet but the blurb about the HDX states
Streams to 6 StreamNet devices.
The more I think about the HDX the more i think that Naim have got it
right and that it is far from flawed product. Considering their
probable target market as it stands at the moment it seems well aimed.
It is attempting to take all the hassle and geekness out of network
music.

Even I am attracted to dumping the wireless network and anyone who can
afford a Naim kit can afford an electrician to wire in the network
cable. I personally don't want a CD player or a ripper and would want
much bigger (and simply/cheaply upgradeable hard drives)... but then I
am comfortable with computers and technology (but not the time they
take up).

I don't really care what lossless format the music plays in as long as
tags are supported (and I see it supports flac anyway).

I'm interested how quiet the device is and how good the interface and
remote are. I've not found out yet, but it looks like the screen is on
the HDX (damn) and so presumably not on the remote, which is a flaw
IMHO.

My guess is that they'll produce a cut down version nearer to my
requirements in the near future.

I've attached a Naim to Dealer missive (which I probably shouldn't
have).

And neither am I influenced by hype! :-)

In fact I've just sold all my Naim gear. I just can't be fussed with
all the wires, black boxes and the continual temptation to spend even
more money. I've not found any network player or network player/Dac
combination that comes close to a Naim CDX and have just given up
trying (at least for a few years).

IMHO if you can't find a decent source then there's no point in
spending huge amount of money and time on the rest of the gear (you
can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear).

I've now got a simple no-hassle system that sounds acceptable. I'm
going to concentrate on fishing and bringing up my kid now. :-)

It's a shame the Linn network player seems so flawed too (has anyone
seen the interface, even the Linn demonstrator had trouble with it!).

Hopefully by the time my son leaves home there'll be something that
sounds as good as vinyl again (minus scratches, rumbles etc). I guess
one of the best things about network players might be that the redbook
standard is dumped.

As someone here once said (maybe the original poster?): I've already
made a sacrifice in sound quality going from CD from vinyl. I don't
want to take another going to a network player. As things stand I
still think you have to, but maybe the Linn and Naim offerings will
rectify this but I won't be buying them until they are much less
expensive and much better designed.

Maybe I've just been spoilt by the CDX.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New transporter firmware (v.40) in nightlies

2008-04-21 Thread ModelCitizen

It was moving to 7.1 that caused the upgrade to firmware 40. I'd have
persevered with it if I did not have the Transporter wired directly to
my amp.

A quick warning to others: Upgrading by downloading the Windows
executable and then errr... executing it, such that 7.1 just overlaid
my 7.0.1 installation destroyed my SqueezeCenter installation. The left
hand pane of the web interface would not load. I've had to reinstall
7.0.1 from scratch now.

I'm back on firmware 37.

This thread is shot anyway (oh look, yet another thread on the
SlimDevices Audiophile forum that has deteriorated into brain-dead
argument, well I never)..

Apart from the speakers your kit is very similar to what I used to
have... and it worked very well (for me). Before I got the Transporter
and got very tired of thinking I needed yet another black (or silver)
box and associated cable I had Naim kit and SB3 with Perpetual
Technologies DAC and Upsampler/Digital Correction Unit (P1-A?) and
Monolithic PSU. The PT stuff was the nicest sounding DAC I found to fix
to the SB3. I upgraded to a Benchmark DAC1 after that but never liked
it very much (clinical, exact, hard and cold). I tried a few others too
but the PT was defintely the best sounding (for me).

I've now fed up of having large numbers of hifi units and have
attempted to obtain the best sound (to my ears) out of the fewest units
(with least wires). This knocked Naim, with their annoying adhesion to
DIN plugs and seperate PSUs out of the equation.

Shame really as Naim stuff really does seems to sound better than
anything else. PRAT I think it's called... a very exasperating tla.
-

Sentimental?
No. I have a lot of Naim stuff for sale and also a Perpetual
Technolgies P-1A. Oh, and a black Transporter too (my new amp is
silver).

of the Transporter fed directly into my Bryston 4B SST power amp is that
the balanced ouputs are quieter (and for me, who likes to rawk, don't go
quite loud enough).

Otherwise. I couldn't agree more about how the differences between
sources are revealed with revealing hifi (yeah, OK!). This may seem
obvious (see?), but it's taken me by surprise recently. As Robin points
out, we could not tell any difference betwen two sources tried at his
house on his rockin' beer boy at college hi end hifi (joke Robin!).
But at my house on medium/low range Naim seperates the differences
between similar sources was noticeable often over time, rather than
immediately however.

Take the same sources to a hi end hifi (in my recent example
top-of-the-range Naim seperates and BW Nautiless speakers) and the
differences between sources becomes obvious in a second (not to say
that snap judgements at which you like best are wise though).

Oohh.. and in the beginning there was speaker placement.

Some friends and I tested out a few devices (Receiver, SB3, Tranpsorter,
SB+, Naim CDX) on a top end Naim hifi with BW Nautiless speakers
recently. We didn't devote too much time to the Receiver and the SB3,
but the differences were not remarked upon as being great. For me
personally I was interested to hear that what I perceive as the
slightly deadening flatness of the SB3 sound was not apparent in the
Receiver.

Caveat: In my experience comparisons like this only have any benefit or
relevance for the individuals conducting the tests. Everyone else
(witness this forum) appears to hear everything very differently. This
is why audiophile reviews or audiophile opinions are generally not
worth a jot. I probably shouldn't have bothered replying to your post

I use 300x300 pixel cover artwork and it looks great auto-scalled on the
Conroller.

I don't bother with my remote anymore and think the Controller has made
my system. It took me a while to stop pointing it at the Transporter
though.

One thing that is not as good with the Controller is errr... finding
your music (sounds pretty fundamental huh?).. as there are no a-z keys
enabling you to zip directly to albums/artists names starting with S
(for instance). Scrolling through 1560 albums and god knows how many
artists is not as much fun.

The ability to select All Albums for any chosen genre has been dumped
too which, if like me, you often play whole albums from a genre further
slows down accessing your music (BTW, if this does worry you please
sign up for this bug:http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6657)

Wierdly it seems more responsive than the original remote. It's even
snappy.

I love it.

Then it turns into, oh shoot. Now that I matched levels and go back

It was on old favorite test album I had not listened to in 6 months

adrenalin on the first listen that made it sound great. Completely in
my head. ItÂ’s very hard to forget that first impression too and if you
know which system youÂ’re on youÂ’ll be biased forever. CanÂ’t tell you
how many times this has happened. And how disappointed I was when I
more carefully tested things. ItÂ’s hard, very hard. Sometimes itÂ’s
easier to assume the “more expensive” setup is better because “it
 should be”.

Have you tried marijuana? There's field of it growing wild outside my

coolest sounding thing they've ever heard.

capable of displaying album art or playlist/album list information, and
allow it to be docked on the main unit when it's not on the coffee

Hmmm... I've not found a gain selector on my (non-pro) 4B ST (although
I have a friend who says there is one on his 4B SST).
Maybe the Bryston spec (original here:
http://www.bryston.ca/BrystonSite05/BrystonDocs.html) is misleading in
that it only refers to the pro-version (with the input selector switch)
but does not state this.

Ahah here we have it.

-Some PRO models provide different inherent gain and/or different gain
options from REG models. This is due to the fact that a balanced input
inherently provides 6dB of gain if each of the two halves of the input
(or if each input phase) is operating at unity gain. This 6dB of gain
is sometimes desired by professional installers, but can be an
annoyance in home installations where every successive balanced in/out
stage in every piece of equipment in the audio chain adds 6dB of gain.
This can quickly add up to an excessive level. In general, REG models
do not usually add 6dB of gain at the balanced inputs, whereas PRO
models do. All Bryston power amplifiers are now made with an overall
unbalanced gain of 28.3 (or approximately 29dB) and are thus compatible
with THX® levels.-

I'm more interested in this valve pre-amp. What is it?
I have a pair of old Quad IIs and when I fixed them up to the Arcs
(which is no way could they drive properly) I was immediately
gobsmacked by the voluptuousness of the sound (this with big slow synth
washes).

Maybe I should just have done with it and copy Adam Slim's ultimate
timbre valve set up.. :-)
or stick with the radio.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] I don't think it gets loud enough

2007-04-27 Thread ModelCitizen

I've been running my Transporter directly into a Bryston 4B ST
(unbalanced, no attenuation) and then into a pair of PMC OB1s for a
couple of days.

Intially I was surprised that the whole rig was not lounder, especially
considering tht the speakers and amp are 300w per channel and are
supposed to have been designed for each other (or at least the speakers
designed for the amp).
However, the Transporter seems to drive the amp properly, as when I
have the thing on full volume the Bryston's red clipping lights can
come on if it happens to be playing a lound track.

What I do notice at full volume (which I use quite a lot) is just how
different the volume levels of different tracks can be. One track can
sound quite quiet and the next clip the amp and distort the speakers (I
don't use the ReplayGain facility).

I might try the balanced outputs when I can find some leads but can't
see how there is likley to be any difference in the sound (balanced is
only useful if you have long cable runs right?).

The Bryston's appear to be built like brick out houses. They are
incredibly solid and heavy. The damage could have been caused whilst I
was driving from Pease Pottage to Barcombe but as the amp was in it's
box in the boot of my TT and I did not drive across fields I doubt it.

I really do think it's all a coincidence but we shall see what Bryston
say. They are interested in the problem and interested in the
Transporter as they have asked me for details of the unit.

Andy... Bryston have been perfect to deal with. They answered my query
about whether the amp had ever been returned for repairs before within
an hour (by email) and gave me tips and a speculative diagnosis over
the phone. They suggested I return it and immediately supplied me with
a returns number. I think they are genuinely interested in the problem.
I don't think they see one of their amps go phut very often.

nuhli... do I understand you correctly?... do you run a Bryston 4B ST
(or SST) into OB1s with a Transporter? If so, can you get the volume
extremely loud indeed?

That's amazing. I've still not found any combination of network

least likeable. Next to the CDX it was cold, clinical, mechanical and
quite tiring over time. However, I agree it did have attack
although I didn't feel that there was anything special about the bass.
I'd be mildly surprised if Adam, who appears to prefer timbre over
detail, would be satisfied with the Dac1...

I heartily agree with Adam's sentiment regarding the sound quality of
analogue/CD/network player. I am heartily pissed off that each new
technological revolution appears to degrade the sound of my music still
further. The NAIM CDX gave me the nearest sound to analogue (within my
budget) and was acceptable.. but I've yet to hear a network player or

I'd be very interested in your SB+ thoughts Adam... it's a shame I
never get to London or I'd bring up my Transporter for a comparison
(you provide the Merlot)... but saying that, it can sometimes takes
weeks for the differences in the sound of a unit to sink into me.

Perhaps someone could modify your CDX to have either BNC input + clock
output, or more thriftily, do it with an SB3 using I2S signals directly
to the pacific microsonics chip of the Naim (at which time you sell the
transporter to recoup!). It would be a network streamer plus DAC that
would be guaranteed to pop your cork, plus you could stream and decode
your HDCD FLAC albums properly :-)

Possibly, but NAIM are just about to release a new thingy that has
DAC's in it that can be used by third party devices like the SB3. It's
too bleedin' expensive (as all NAIM stuff is) but if it gives me the
convenience of the SB3 with the NAIM sound I can rest at last.
If it does sound like a CDX I'd probably stick the damn Transporter
through it as I need to the two displays due to the distance my rack is
from my seating position (one of the reason's I could not consider the
SB+)..

I hate hifi.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Slimserver web gui home page title - change?

2007-03-09 Thread ModelCitizen

I'd like to change the title of the main Slimserver home page from
SlimServer to something else. Anyone know how I can do thi?. I thought
is would be as simple as changeing the metatag for index.html but it's
not.

Yeah, I know... I've asked this before and received the answer... but I
can't find the answer now and any search on these forums that includes
the word Slimserver just returns a blank page.

Slimserver 6.5.2 on Windows XP Pro, default skin, if it makes a
difference.

Thanks for any help

I'm very impressed that anyone can get a hifi sounding good in a room

I love the hifi in my car. It's loud, clear, good stereo separation but
really it just rocks... all the energetic, fast music (electronic and

I thought that quote was Sagan.. but I could be wrong. Dawkins has been

I have the standard supplied Bose system in my Audi TT and it really
rocks.. no complaints whatsoever... from my experience of this unit I
can't see why people slag off Bose so much. It sounds much better than
the Blaupunkt in my last vehicle (a VW Golf).

I also use an iTrip to link up my iPod. This is satisfactory but no
more. I don't get interference but ths sound is flat and it frequently
does just not work for reason's I just can't seem to work out.
I used to use one of those fake casette things for my last car but that
was pretty awful too with poor sound quality.

I agree with th others, your best bet is to get a convertion kit that
fits to your head unit in place of the CD player.. I know they are made
for my Audi and also for my last vehicle. You can fit them yourself if
savvy in that sort of direction, but otherwise a garage will fit them
cheaply. The advantage of this kit is that the CD controls on the head
unit might be able to control your MP3 player (at least the one I
looked at could control my iPod)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Really though, am i getting the best out of this Ripping

2007-01-27 Thread ModelCitizen

My reason for keeping the cue files is to exactly recreate the CDs
should I ever need to. The cue sheet is a simple text file that keeps
the gap information. Just look at the EAC menus, you'll quickly find
the one for generating the cue file.
I always rip CDs so each track is ripped as an individual file (even
for mix CDs). However, you can rip a whole CD as a single file and use
the cue file as a playlist for the ripped album. I wouldn't recommend
this as I believe SlimServer is still not too great at dealing with cue
files.
I keep each cue file in the same directory as the music files and get
SlimServer to ignore the file type (Server Settings/File Types/DISABLED
PLAYLIST FILE EXTENSIONS). If you don't disable the cue file type you'll
probably get lots of oddities as an unmodified cue file will reference
the wav files EAC generates and not the Flac files the compression app
then generates.

It is very important you set EAV up corectly. Make sure you spend some
time doing this before starting to rip. For instance you can only
perfectly regenerate CDs if you have the offset for your CDRom drive
set correctly in EAC.

2007-01-26 Thread ModelCitizen

Not dead sure this is the correct forum for this post, but assuming you
have written here because you are audiophile inclined then no, EAC with
Lame is totally the wrong thing to to. Lame produces the MP3 file
format, a lossy format. You should use EAC plus Flac which produces
lossless files. If you set up EAC correctly (which is fiddle but there
are loads of tutorials around) and keep the .cue file then you will
never need to re-rip again as you will have a perfect bit for bit copy
of the CD.
Apple and Windows also have lossless file formats but personally I'd
never trust either of the two companies not to change something about
their file format that could lead to you having to rip them all again
just to get them to play in their newest player. Flac is the main
format used by most people here I think and the Squeezebox can decode
it to pcm, saving passing pcm over your wireless/wired network (i.e.
over 50% saving on bandwidth).

I sold my last SlimServer 2 to a friend and he asked me what he should
run with it. I told him that on these forums the Aego-M had been
recommeded and he bought it. He's very pleased. We were both surprised
by quite a few things about it:
The weight of all the speakers - they are heavy!
The sound - it's very good indeed for stuff that looks like it's an
upgrade for computer speakers
The size of the speakers - the two main speakers are tiny. The bass
bin is large.
There is mid range - from the make up of the speakers it doesn't look
like there should be any but there is.
The bass - it's huge. There is setting on the bass bin... 1,2 or 3.
It's hard to imagine anyone using 3 or some using 2..
For 100 UK pounds they are phenominal.

But you need somewhere to put the bass bin. It's not pretty.
