Shredder, I have compared my system with the MW TP directly to my amp
and with the 36.5 in between, it is in another league with the 36.5 in

I am pretty happy running the TP directly into the monos. It definitely
sounds better than it did with my old integrated as the pre (pre and
power separated). I cannot imagine a pre adding much as it really
sounds great as is. The only drwback is the volume; the lowest volume
setting is way too loud. I have Endler attenuators on order, but have
not received them yet.

I bypassed the Bryston to see if I could hear a difference and if there
was one, it was negligible. I could get the TP to -10db before my
windows started to visibly bow outward. I decided that for safety and
flexibility of other sources, I'd keep the Bryston inline. I've A/B'd
the balanced out vs. DAC in the Bryston and honestly can't conclude
what differences there are and if I like it better one way or the
other. The nice thing is that I have 3 DAC connections available for
future digital sources...although I don't picture having anything other
than a CD player I suppose.

Hey Mike,
what do you mean by bridge mode and how does this effect bi-amping?
How much are the maridian? How much the Vandersteen? I read about atc

replacing my dali speakers. I am satisfied with them.

Oops looking at the atc scm 100 gave me a good laugh. And I thought I
was crazzy! $22k for speakers. Nope. Definitely out of range! And happy
about it! Will look at the other two to get an idea if I can tune my
setup within a reasonable range. Any suggestions gratefully received.

The 557 amplifier is a stereo amp that can be bridged for a mono
output. Because I have two of them I could run them in mono mode with
one powering each speaker. However I use them in stereo mode which
means I have 4 channels of amplification. This means that instead of
680 watts per speaker I am running 200 watts per driver (i.e. 200 watts
for left bass, 200 watts for left tweeter and so on). This is the way
the designers of the amp had intended it to be used.
In momo mode I could only bi-wire not bi-amp.
I don't know of the atc 100 you mention. The speakers I was talking
about are Called A.C.T. and made by a british company called Wilson
Benesch.

ATC produces speakers for different budgets starting from $1,000 up to
the million dollar system they installed at the Walt Disney Concert
Hall in Los Angeles. If you are curious about any of them I'd be happy
to provide more information if you'd like to pm me.

I am an ATC dealer in the San Francisco Bay area and I like to think of
myself as someone who is looking to make new friends and share knowledge
rather than convince someone to buy something. I found a product that I
really like and realized that in the USA there aren't a lot of people
outside of the professional world that have even heard of the name
ATC.

I think the Transporter is an amazing product and I hate having to
fumble through cd's when I use my cd player. The Transporter - ATC
active speaker is an excellent, minimal signal-path combination.

If anyone is bothered by my post, please pm me and let me know what I
should do differently or how I should edit this post to make it more
appropriate. I don't like annoying salespeople or spam either, and I
hope this doesn't qualify as either.

Thanks,

Will

currently connected to my transporter:
crap of a dvd player via coax spdif
tp - marantz pm-11s1 - dali helicon 400

Since I don't need the preamps capabilities of the Marantz anymore I
wonder if I should sell it and get two power amps.
I choose the marantz since it had xlr inputs and I had some devices
which went into it. Especially my sb3 via rca.
I would want to have symmetric power amps for arrround 1000 to 2000
Euro each. Any suggestions.

Hi
My transporter is connected directly to a pair of Meridian 557 power
amps via balanced XLR (not in bridged mode to allow bi-amping). I also
have a Meridian 500 CD transport connected to the AES/EBU input of the
transporter. This used to run through a Meridian 518 and 566 (20bit)
DAC but prefer the 500 going straight into the TP.
My speakers were Mission Elegante E83s as my system was mainly used for
movies (with a Rotel RSP-1098), however I hardly watch movies now and my
system is slowly turning more into a 2 channel system. The massive E83s
have made way for their smaller borthers the E81s as these sound much
more musical. I have my eyes on some BW 800 series speakers or some
Wilson Benesch A.C.Ts next as I think my speakers are throttling the
rest of the system.

I would think that adding an a/d converter so that you can feed your
vinyl through the Transporter dac in order to use the Transporter as a
preamp would work for convenience, but it would be counterintuitive for
audio quality.

The benefit of vinyl is that it is analog and was never subject to an
a/d conversion nor an eventual d/a conversion. Unless you only care
about the convenience of accessing your records and not their audio
quality, I would suggest another route.

A simple preamp with phono stage should sound much better, however, you
would need to switch your SCM100 interconnects to change sources...

But a handful of metal film resistors to make up a passive attenuator

This looks a very neat solution. Thank you.

Yes but Clive...getting a good ADC is quite an expensive challenge and
you are going through an ADC-DAC chain unnecessarily. This obsession
with no preamp doesn't make sense if you need a phono stage (and yes I
did read your post carefully).
Personally I'd rather buy a decent pre-amp with an internal or external
phono stage. A lot depends on levels of quality required. A good
external phono stage is going to be $1-2k. A good pre-amp with internal
phono stages is going to be $2-3k.
ADC's...well I'm not sure what would fit here. Apogee is good but not
cheap.

At the audiophile level, ADCs are really expensive. There are lots fewer

Apogee, Benchmark, Larvy, etc. make ADCs and DACs, but they all start

So a more complete description would be:
 TP - balanced analogue outputs - 13dB attenuators - ATC SCM100A

Normal listening levels are with the TP's volume control around -20dB
to -10dB (depending on mood). That leaves a bit of extra in reserve for
 real head-banging sessions.

Edit: You mentioned the risk of frying the monitors. I think that with
ATCs this isn't a danger: the amps are carefully matched to the drive
units, and I'd be surprised if they are not protected to prevent them
doing any damage. Of course, SCM100As are perfectly capable of frying
your ears before they blow up, so it's still advisable to be careful...

Clive,
I am looking for the best set up for my ATC SCM 100 active so your

I'll probably use Transporter-10dB attenuator-ATCs

Have already had an unfortunate experience with Transporter feeding

control didn't work.
I'mm praying that the overload protection in the ATCs has worked!
Have yet to buy a replacement Transporter, but will do so now I
understand the attenuation issues.
The alternative to the minimalist approach is egd's system with the ATC
SCA2 preamp.
This would allow me to use vinyl , but is it going to add or detract
from the overall quality?

At least on the receivers I've had, direct was a mode rather than an
input and could be applied to any input. Manufacturers refer to it as
direct, pure direct, bypass etc.

It just means your signal isn't going through an additional
analog-to-digital conversion.

Obviously it sounds good to you though, just wanted to suggest another

What I don't listen to much these days:

To my ears, the Bryston Transporter DACs sound quite similar. I am a

Transporter directly to NAP250 and cheap DVD player on the digital coax
in.

Muski, I'm very interested in how your headphone setup sounds, since
I'm considering adding a Rudistor combined pre-amp/headphone amp to my
setup, and like you I want to take advantage of the Transporters
balanced output to make a completely balanced rig all the way to the
headphones.

Other reasons for wanting to add a pre-amp are that I feel there is
something missing in the sound when directly connected to the power amp
(my Transporter sounds no better right now than my old CD63KISig and it
should be blowing it away easily), and in addition the digital volume
control from the remote I feel is not very suitable for day-to-day
volume control, only fine tuning.

Have you or anyone else used Grado headphones in balanced config?

coop250 --

My end-to-end balanced headphone setup is wonderful (warning: very
addictive!). I noticed a slight increase in detail and a very
signficant improvement in imaging over the high-end unbalanced
headphone system I had before (both with Transporter as source). I
have yet to find a headphone amp with a built-in DAC that sounds better
than the Transporter.

I, too, prefer having analog volume control in the headphone pre/amp
(and in my Bryston preamp, for that matter). I have never really tried
doing a digital/analog vol control listening test, but it always seemed
counter-intuitive to me to spend all the time and effort getting
bit-perfect rips in EAC only to then start modifying those same bits
for volume control in the digital stage...

So far, I only have my AKG 701s wired for balanced use. I have read
good things about Sennheiser HD650s in balanced mode, and am thinking
about getting a set of balanced cables for my pair. I don't have a
pair of Grados yet. I noticed that Moon Audio (www.moon-audio.com)
sells the GS1000, RS1 RS2 cabled for balanced usage. I'm very
curious about the GS1000.

Yes, I do have 13dB attenuators in the signal path. (Why 13dB? Well, I
wanted about 12dB, and the resistors I had coveniently to hand happened
to provide 13dB).

So a more complete description would be:
TP - balanced analogue outputs - 13dB attenuators - ATC SCM100A
active monitors

Normal listening levels are with the TP's volume control around -20dB
to -10dB (depending on mood). That leaves a bit of extra in reserve for
real head-banging sessions.

Edit: You mentioned the risk of frying the monitors. I think that with
ATCs this isn't a danger: the amps are carefully matched to the drive
units, and I'd be surprised if they are not protected to prevent them
doing any damage. Of course, SCM100As are perfectly capable of frying
your ears before they blow up, so it's still advisable to be careful...

The DVD player is really crap and I would like to get something better.
At the same time I would like to get surround sound but still get the
front R/L directly from the TP. Would it be possible to use e.g. a
Cambridge DVD89 and route centre, and rear audio analogue outputs
directly to powered monitors and route the front R/L to the TP via Coax
SPDIF? Would the TP be able to pick out just the front R/L signals from
 the digital audio signal?

No, surround sound is usually Dolby Digital or DTS. The SB3 and the
Transporter don't know what to do with it.

You would have to set up the DVD player to output everything but L/R
via analog, and L/R via S/PDIF. I doubt if there are such controls.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is connected to your Transporter?

2007-03-24 Thread yooper

What is connected to your Transporter? A CD player, external DAC, DVD
player (etc.)?

How is it connected and how are you using the world clock?

Satisfied with the results?

I'm curious as to what others are using their Transporter for.

Very simple.

Transporter - Arcam FMJ A32 amplifier - Monitor Audio GS-20
speakers.

Actually I suppose for completeness I should also say I'm using the
wireless bridging feature to connect an NSLU2 (which is in turn acting
as FTP server for my Toppy PVR) to the wireless network.

Maybe not quite so simple after all!

Mine's pretty simple too... am still trying to swap the NAIM for a
Bryston though.

TPJeff Rowland Amp WAtt/Puppy.

I'm trying out the Endler balanced attenuaters instead of my Rowland
pre amp.

I'm not sure it sounds better though.
