Very nice work! Mind if I ask what you used for the tinted window for
the display? I'm re-packaging an SB3, but haven't been able find
suitable dark tinted glass or plastic.

Thanks JeffW!

Actually I used clear acrylic sourced from a picture frame and cut to
fit with a GE plastics cutter knife.

The blue color comes from a gel optical filter film (available from
sound reinforcement stores or Amazon) cut to fit the clear acrylic and
glued from the inside. It's a little oversized so the glue won't show
up in the actual display window.

Not the most professional approach but it works very nicely!

Hi Anne!
Thanks for the kind comments on my design.

This is actually, the Super Squeezebox and it's not a commercial
design. Just a home project for the fun of it!

The SB+, OTOH, is available on the market and a completely different
animal.

Compared to the stock SB3, my unit has improved soundstaging with
better separation of individual instruments and voices. Sound is also
much more relaxed with less bite and harshness. Resolution is also
markedly increased.

Best regards,

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Super Squeezebox Project

2007-05-12 Thread crooner

Well fellas, it's been almost a month since my last post. All this time
I've been sourcing parts for my project. The hardest part to find was
the 20 pin FPC cable for the display. It arrived yesterday.

I have put all the pieces together for the initial test. It's looking
pretty good methinks. The front panel is only a prototype I built. I'm
having the display cutout done by Front Panel Express. It should arrive
next week. In the meantime, this one has let me experiment with
different display colors. I settled for a nice deep blue color. Matches
great with the blue LED on the power supply unit.

Since I am basically just using the digital outs, I added a 1:1 pulse
transformer and BNC connector. The analog stage has new Neutrix
connectors, but otherwise stock

Notice the extensive shielding of the display area. I am also using ERS
(RFI/EMI reducing sheets) material liberally inside the case of both
main unit and power supply.

New IXYS HEXFRED diodes were added to the PS unit, along with a Auricap
film bypass for the smoothing capacitors.

The power connection is via high quality XLR Neutrix connections. I
custom made a cable using Neutrix connectors and silver teflon wiring.
A couple of TDK ferrite snap-in cores were added to the cable.

This thing is sounding fantastic. Very satisfied with this project!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Super Squeezebox Project

2007-04-14 Thread JohnSwenson

Actually you CAN get some magnetic shielding with aluminum. A 1/4 inch
thick piece of aluminum will drop a 60Hz magnetic field by 5-10db. So
putting a linear supply in a thick walled aluminum enclosure is not
just cosmetic. If I remember correctly the thickness is directly
proportional to the attenuation, so don't skimp, use massive thick
heavy stuff.

Even with a linear supply you can get a significant amount of radiated
noise caused by the secondary of the transformer ringing at high
frequencies when hit with the current spike from the recifiers. This
effect is worse the higher the quality of the transofrmer. Its very
easy to damp this ringing with a resistor and capacitor (the two
inseries) placed across the secondary of the transformer. Almost no
commercial supplies have this. I tried it on mine and it made a
significant difference.

Jim Haggerman has a paper on this on his web site if anyone wants to
look at it. Its a bit complicated to find the exact values to use, but
it turns out that damping too much doesn't hurt anything. So I came up
with a set of values that worked for every one of the transformers in
all my equipment, 330 ohms and .022uf. I put these on everything and
the results were startling, the acoustical space of the original
recording is now much more a part of the listening experience. Its
probably the largest improvement in sound for any one thing I've done.

And this one IS measurable. With my scope set to its highest gain
setting I could always see some high frequency hash on the supply
rails and the audio outputs of pretty much anything in the system.
After this change the hash was gone. The scope trace is just a thin
line now (with no signal).

The SB linear supply was one of the biggest offenders, since it runs at
a fairly high current it has large caps, which result in very large
current spikes. I also used a high quality transformer which had very
low losses, unfortunately that means it rings like a bell at 200KHz!
Cheap crud transformers actually don't ring as much beause their
internal losses tend to damp the resonances.

I would definately recommend this simple tweak if you are using a
large high current supply, it will almost certainly have this problem.

Thanks Patrick. I must not have read the manual carefully enough.

Crooner, which switching supply were you going to replace? It may be
more direct to add a small regulator to the caps at VDD and power them
with a 5V superreg, if that's what you were wanting to improve (though
I'm not positive it's even sound advice!)

Another convenient 3.3V supply is the headphone section..

Well... I'm open to suggestions!
I just thought replacing the internal switcher inside the SB2 would
improve things a bit. Although in practice I can't hear any difference
between the SB3 and SB2 digital outs going to my DAC60.

Perhaps Patrick would like to enlighten us on the best place in the SB

Unless you box it up in mu-metal, the metal case will not prevent

voltages (primarily) in high Z circuits through capacitive coupling

That is one reason why I suggested using a power supply more in line

only practical way to shield it is to keep it as far away from the
audio circuits as possible. This is why many resort to putting power

Good point!
I'm definitely going for a two box approach as I stated in an earlier
post. I will use a couple of enclosures from DIYenclosures.com. The
power supply enclosure should arrive tomorrow. Should keep me busy this
weekend :-)

Yesterday, I was at my local dealer (Jeff's Sound Values) and the owner
showed me a sheet of special material that's supposed to filter EMI/RFI
emissions. This adhesive material can go inside the chassis or wrapped
around certain parts such as analog and digital connections. It's non
conductive. I forgot to ask the exact name of the thing, but I'll
research it for my project.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Super Squeezebox Project

2007-04-12 Thread crooner

And thanks for your Super Regulator offer. I'd love to try one of those.
What's the voltage output? I was thinking of using it in place of the
switching 3.3 V supply.

Yesterday I took the covers off the SB2 to inspect the innards. I must
say I'm impressed. The integration on this is incredible.

Also, it is obvious that great care was taken to miminize RFI/EMI
interference by carefully routing the PCB traces and keeping them very
short. The absence of any wires aside from the antenna and display
connections is excellent design practice.

So, there's an obvious advantage in using SMD components in this
regard. It's not just about manufacturing ease. The tiny caps and
resistors do allow for shorter signal paths and better noise rejection.

Now that I've seen the innards of the SB2, I'm a little weary of the
massive modifications done by the well known outfits. The replacement
caps often have long leads that are hard to dress on the PCB. I would
venture the benefits of these high-performance parts are somewhat
negated by the long leads.

I am planning to replace the RCA jacks with something better. But even
by doing this, you are introducing some extra wire in the signal path.
The original jacks are soldered directly on the board...

I'm figuring that even a straight transfer to a larger enclosure is
going to have sonic benefits, even proper care is taken.

For instance, the display PCB can be shielded from the rest of the
electronics. This should prevent stray RFI emissions from entering the
audio circuits.

Got my Squeezebox 2 today. Man that was fast!
The seller was in Colorado and he sent it DHL Express, for just $10
SH. Very nice of him.

The unit is in mint condition, virtually brand new. It looks so nice
that I almost feel guilty about taking it apart. The Squeezebox 2 is
the unit that pretty much started it all, in the audiophile sense.
Perhaps a collectible in the future? I know Sean Adams at only 27 is
quickly becoming an icon and I'm sure he'll be joining the likes of
John Curl, Jim Bongiorno, Steve McCormack and others. If he hasn't
already!

I have read a lot about the SB2's appearance, comparing it to an alarm
clock and such. But you know what? Looks great in person! The rubbery
plastic of the case is great. Even the remote has that rubbery plastic
on it. Audio Research remotes are also rubber coated. So perhaps the
cheapie remote thing started when the SB3 was released.

In any case, I have the lighted TP remote and will use that one with my
SB2...

 Hi guys,

Been dreaming this in my head for the last few days. I'm going to build
a Super Squeezebox rivaling the Transporter in overall performance with
 looks to match.

For his purpose, I've just purchased a SB2 via eBay that will be modded
and then transplanted to a custom made audiophile grade enclosure to
match my other components. The enclosure will feature a thick brushed
 aluminum front panel.

There's the option of having a the linear power supply incorporated
(and properly shielded) inside the enclosure or using a separate box.

For my present SB3 setup, I've been using a Power One HB5-3/OVP-A based
DIY power supply with excellent results. See:
 http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32802

For the Super Squeezebox, I will be using a larger Condor MD5-12-OVP-A
medical grade linear supply. This unit is rated at 12 amps, which
sounds like overkill, but for the Super SB nothing less will do :-)

As for the mods on the SB2, I plan to do them on the analog and digital
level. For this purpose, I'm considering Bolder's full mods. However, I
 might just do them myself.

Once the Super SB is finished I plan to do comparisions between it's
analog outs and the digital out fed to my Lite Audio DAC60. My present
SB3 will also serve for comparisions as a stock unit.

I think this is going to turn out pretty sweet. I even bought a lighted
remote to go with the new unit.

Quite frankly, my current stock SB3 with custom DIY power supply and
DAC60 sounds pretty sweet as it is. But the adventurous in me is eager
to work on a new project. It will surely keep me busy in the months to
 follow.

Stay tuned for updates on this Super SB

I'm sure the thick brushed aluminum front panel and the larger
Condor MD5-12-OVP-A medical grade linear supply, will make a big
improvement in SQ.

PS- if you're going to follow Bolder's full mods, for your Super
SB, don't forget to install Bybees on the linear psu's transformer
secondaries, output rails, SPDIF output and analog outputs. Please let
us know if the silver or gold Bybees sound
better.

Have fun.

Seriously though, the Super SB will just be a natural progression of
the SB2/3 into a more conventional form factor. Perhaps filling a void
between the SB and Transporter.

I could have simply transferred the guts to a larger case and be done

This also needs to be cost effective, because otherwise I would simply

While adding a linear supply to the box might do some good, depending on
who you ask, there is a good reason not to make it too big. A 12A
supply used where only a 1A or so supply is required will be capable of
destrying a PCB if something goes wrong in the SB.

Industrial linear power supplies are usually built with EI core
transformers. The bigger the core, the greater the leakage of the
magnetic field from it. A smaller supply will be less likely to
pollute your audio with stray magnetic fields.

If you want the thing to be heavy, as it must be for true high-end
status, add some bricks or lead shot. Tell people its there to dampen
vibrations.

The 12A supply was very cheap to let it pass.
However, it doesn't seem to be too big. Just slightly larger than the
3A supply. Same open frame construction.

Specs do not call for mandatory forced air cooling, so no fan is
required.
The most obvious differences being the slightly larger PS, filter caps
and four TO-3 regulators instead of a single one in the Power One unit.

But I understand your concerns about heat and EMI radiation. I'll
probably just enclose in a dedicated Context Engineering box, just like
the other one.

BTW, the MTBF of the unit is in excess of 200,000 hours, BTW. Medical
grade stuff...

If you don't mind ordering from Italy, these guys do really nice
enclosures - I rehoused my SB2 in one of their units with a 10mm front
and included a new linear PSU (3 amp rated). It made a not
insignificant improvement to the sound, but it still needs an external
DAC.

Here's a picture of what the final unit looks like, it's the top unit.
A little too wide for the other units, but pretty good nonetheless. It
cost around 80 euros shipped to the UK I seem to remember, but I may
have that wrong.

That is very nice looking CardinalFang!

Did they cut the faceplate or did you have it machined for the
display?

Here are some shots of the Par-Metal enclosures:

They look a little industrial, but appear well finished. I particularly
like the handles on the larger size 2RU. Perfect match to my Audio
Research stuff.

I was wondering if the 1RU would work. It's only 1.75 high...

They don't even do wooden knobs... ;)

Seriously, this looks like a fun project. However, how do you define
the value benefit? I think you could spend £500 without necessarily
addressing some of the key points sonically (without lots of research,
how do you know what these are?). Have you consulted with others that
do SB mods, or are you just 'winging it' and having as much fun as
possible? :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Super Squeezebox Project

2007-04-08 Thread crooner

Well...

At first I just wanted an enclosure to match the rest of my stuff.
Obviously the SB3 would not be an option because of the form factor.

The SB2 lends itself quite easily to custom applications, so I got
myself one.

Now, even though my current setup is musically satisfying, I figured
why not go the extra mile and do some improvements on the circuit as
well.

I love my Lite Audio DAC60, but according to some, modifying the analog
section of the SB can yield excellent results. So much, that an outboard
DAC may not be needed...

The digital mods are also quite interesting. I particularly like the
addition of a 1:1 transformer in the SP/DIF output as done by fellow
member Gary.

The plan is to improve the SB2 in both analog and digital outputs and
then decide if I'll keep the outboard DAC.

As for the value thing, I don't plan to spend tons of cash on this. The
Par-metal enclosure is less than $80.

Another company that makes cases that I like quite a bit is Lansing.
You can find their website here:

http://www.lansing-enclosures.com/

I've built a preamp in their Greybox enclosure and think it's one of
the nicer looking cases available:

I've also built things in the Par Metal enclosures and they are good
value but for a bit more money I'd spring for the Lansing.

Attached is a picture of my phono stage and preamp. The top two boxes
are the phone stage - a clone of the Pass Xono. Its built in two par
metal boxes. The bottom box is a line stage based on a Borbely design
in the Lansing box.

Great looking DIY equipment Gary!

I checked the Lansing site but it was a bit difficult to visualize the
different options. But they sure look excellent.

I wonder if they are able to machine the display window on the
faceplate. If not, I'll have to find a local CNC shop to do this for
me.

The rest of the holes can be drilled with a Dremel but the display
window has to be perfect unless a bezel or escutcheon is used..
