Mr. Bill. Thanks. I did not own the stock, but I did some extensive listening to the stock version before I sprung for the mod. Both are teriffic, but I really like the warm tube sound of the Mod. I am pretty happy running the TP directly into the monos. It definitely sounds better than it did with my old integrated as the pre (pre and power separated). Any suggestions gratefully received. The 557 amplifier is a stereo amp that can be bridged for a mono output. Because I have two of them I could run them in mono mode with one powering each speaker. However I use them in stereo mode which means I have 4 channels of amplification. This means that instead of 680 watts per speaker I am running 200 watts per driver (i.e. 200 watts for left bass, 200 watts for left tweeter and so on). This is the way the designers of the amp had intended it to be used. In momo mode I could only bi-wire not bi-amp. I don't know of the atc 100 you mention. ATC produces speakers for different budgets starting from $1,000 up to the million dollar system they installed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. If you are curious about any of them I'd be happy to provide more information if you'd like to pm me. I am an ATC dealer in the San Francisco Bay area and I like to think of myself as someone who is looking to make new friends and share knowledge rather than convince someone to buy something. I found a product that I really like and realized that in the USA there aren't a lot of people outside of the professional world that have even heard of the name ATC. I think the Transporter is an amazing product and I hate having to fumble through cd's when I use my cd player. The Transporter - ATC active speaker is an excellent, minimal signal-path combination. If anyone is bothered by my post, please pm me and let me know what I should do differently or how I should edit this post to make it more appropriate. I don't like annoying salespeople or spam either, and I hope this doesn't qualify as either. I choose the marantz since it had xlr inputs and I had some devices which went into it. Especially my sb3 via rca. I would want to have symmetric power amps for arrround 1000 to 2000 Euro each. Hi My transporter is connected directly to a pair of Meridian 557 power amps via balanced XLR (not in bridged mode to allow bi-amping). I also have a Meridian 500 CD transport connected to the AES/EBU input of the transporter. This used to run through a Meridian 518 and 566 (20bit) DAC but prefer the 500 going straight into the TP. My speakers were Mission Elegante E83s as my system was mainly used for movies (with a Rotel RSP-1098), however I hardly watch movies now and my system is slowly turning more into a 2 channel system. The massive E83s have made way for their smaller borthers the E81s as these sound much more musical. I have my eyes on some BW 800 series speakers or some Wilson Benesch A.C.Ts next as I think my speakers are throttling the rest of the system. -- MikeFish MikeFish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12860 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33868 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I would think that adding an a/d converter so that you can feed your vinyl through the Transporter dac in order to use the Transporter as a preamp would work for convenience, but it would be counterintuitive for audio quality. The benefit of vinyl is that it is analog and was never subject to an a/d conversion nor an eventual d/a conversion. Muski, I'm very interested in how your headphone setup sounds, since I'm considering adding a Rudistor combined pre-amp/headphone amp to my setup, and like you I want to take advantage of the Transporters balanced output to make a completely balanced rig all the way to the headphones. Other reasons for wanting to add a pre-amp are that I feel there is something missing in the sound when directly connected to the power amp (my Transporter sounds no better right now than my old CD63KISig and it should be blowing it away easily), and in addition the digital volume control from the remote I feel is not very suitable for day-to-day volume control, only fine tuning. Have you or anyone else used Grado headphones in balanced config? -- coop250 coop250's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8217 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33868 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is connected to your Transporter?
coop250 -- My end-to-end balanced headphone setup is wonderful (warning: very addictive!). I noticed a slight increase in detail and a very signficant improvement in imaging over the high-end unbalanced headphone system I had before (both with Transporter as source). I have yet to find a headphone amp with a built-in DAC that sounds better than the Transporter. I, too, prefer having analog volume control in the headphone pre/amp (and in my Bryston preamp, for that matter). I have never really tried doing a digital/analog vol control listening test, but it always seemed counter-intuitive to me to spend all the time and effort getting bit-perfect rips in EAC only to then start modifying those same bits for volume control in the digital stage... So far, I only have my AKG 701s wired for balanced use. I have read good things about Sennheiser HD650s in balanced mode, and am thinking about getting a set of balanced cables for my pair. I don't have a pair of Grados yet. I noticed that Moon Audio (www.moon-audio.com) sells the GS1000, RS1 RS2 cabled for balanced usage. I'm very curious about the GS1000. -- muski muski's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3670 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33868 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The ModWright FirstWatt F3 JFET amplifier together sound better to me than many systems at ten times the price and the Transporter gives me a virtual music collection that is worth more than all I will ever earn in my lifetime. (!) I'm a huge fan of Slim Devices as a result. Funny thing is, I originally bought the TP as a music server for a work environment. When network access was restriced, it came to my house and will never leave! I end up buying more CD's and LP's than before though, guided by my listening to new artists on the TP... egd;190076 Wrote: Clive, pardon my ignorance, but would it not be advisable to use balanced attenuators in this scenario? I only ask because I'm contemplating the same setup and don't want to risk frying the monitors on some off chance of a software malfunction. Yes, I do have 13dB attenuators in the signal path. (Why 13dB? Well, I wanted about 12dB, and the resistors I had coveniently to hand happened to provide 13dB). So a more complete description would be: TP - balanced analogue outputs - 13dB attenuators - ATC SCM100A active monitors Normal listening levels are with the TP's volume control around -20dB to -10dB (depending on mood). That leaves a bit of extra in reserve for real head-banging sessions. Edit: You mentioned the risk of frying the monitors. I think that with ATCs this isn't a danger: the amps are carefully matched to the drive units, and I'd be surprised if they are not protected to prevent them doing any damage. Of course, SCM100As are perfectly capable of frying your ears before they blow up, so it's still advisable to be careful... -- cliveb Performers - dozens of mixers and effects - clipped/hypercompressed mastering - you think a few extra ps of jitter matters? cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33868 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
