That IIC ASW20 was originally owned by Brad Edwards & can always remember
how Brad would say how nice it's feel was. His later ASW20B had stiffer
wings which he never liked as much even though it carried more water.

Always can ask Brad for his thoughts direct 0267711733 at home.

2015-02-24 Thread Terence Doherty

I have one of these driving a 303 screen. It is now suffering the
Garmin date problem. It has always had an issue whereby it displays
the flight elapsed time as zero, although it records flights
correctly.

Can you overhaul these, Ian, or anyone else in Australia? Or do I
have to send it to Clearnav?

GPS25 it is best to replace with GPS 15xL which will work for years to

[Aus-soaring] FOR SALE: Parcel shelf parachute

2015-02-22 Thread Matthew Scutter
Did you have one too many christmas puddings and now don't fit in your
glider?
Did you buy an 'a' fuselage glider and find it a little less 'cosy' and a
little more 'uncomfortable'? Is your centre of gravity too far forwards?
Would you rather CONFOR and cushions under you than some lambswool and
fabric?

Thanks to months of yoga, dieting, (and some small glider modifications), I
am now able to contort myself such that I can actually fit in my own glider
with a regular parachute, so subsequently my parcel shelf parachute is for
sale.

You wear a harness, and stick the parachute in the parcel shelf area. It's
a static line so no fumbling for handles as you plunge to the earth.

More details here:
https://www.gliderpilotshop.com/emergency-parachute-10-30-24-ii.html

Perfect condition, 1.5 years into the 15(+) year lifespan. New is ~3000$
landed in Australia (w/GST).

Asking 2150$. I would consider a swap (with cash) for a slim parachute
(National 360 or similar).

[Aus-soaring] FOR SALE: Cirrus 75B, GQT

2014-11-09 Thread Adam Woolley
VH-GQT, aka 'W3' For Sale

Make an offer on this beautiful Cirrus 75B. I'm willing to sell the glider
fully kitted out as it is now, or as I purchased it (ASI, ALT, Winter Vario,
Radio, OzFlarm, trailer, plus Maughmer winglets).

GQT was bought into the country in 1976 - currently has ~3150hrs. 250kg
B.E.W., 70kg - 110kg pilot range. Parachute included. Next major inspection due
at 6000hrs. Custom panel, full ClearNav system, Colibri2, MicroAir radio,
OzFlarm. Maughmer winglets. MH O2 EDS. New interior. Extract vent & custom
scoop. Pirka & Storker Electric Bug Wipers. 16m tips. Functional & great
traveling trailer. Kerry Covers.

Pictures found here:
https://flickr.com/photos/127475624@N05/sets/72157648772828579

Contact me if you're interested: go_soar...@hotmail.com

More detail:

This Cirrus has had everything under the sun applied to it, as a result
performs & handles like it's on rails. I've completed 8 flights over 700km,
with one 950km triangle - this glider goes!

I'm flexible with what the glider is sold with, as most of the equipment below
can be used as a backup in my Ventus - which has an identical setup.

I'm only selling as owning & operating two gliders at their peak performance is
proving quite hard.

*Custom designed panel, simply supreme for pilots in a club environment, all
the way to the competition/XC scene. Simplicity was in mind when I designed
it: ClearNav MFD, ClearNav vario, Colibri 2, OzFlarm, MicroAir (an early one,
can be heard in Temora when I'm in QLD I'm told!), ASI & ALT;

*DR Mark D Maughmer winglets, these were specifically designed for the Cirrus
wingtip - giving a claimed/researched, 4% advantage to performance;

*Mountain High O2 EDS system, big tank with custom install;

*Interior has had a full make over, sporting the latest Schempp-Hirth shades.
Easy to maintain & clean. Airflow is strong in the cockpit due to the vent
system below.

*Pirka & Storka, Electric Bug Wipers, including low drag fiberglass blades.
Simple & easy to use. This system has never failed on me since install (3 yrs);

*Extract vent (within the inspection panel), with accompanying scoop to direct
the air exactly where I want it to go. GQT's cockpit is arguably quieter than a
new glider out of the factory. Glider is fully race sealed;

*16m tips

*Trailer is very functional, travels great.

A compass needle aligns with the magnetic field lines of the Earth - it
does not point necessarily to the North pole.
A compass needle requires to be weighted differently in the Northern and
Southern hemisphere to counteract the magnetic inclination.
That's why we have "Northern" and "Southern" Hemisphere magnetic compass'
in our gliders.
A "Northern" hemisphere's compass needle end (or disk vector) would just
have the Southern end pointing down until it touches its casing - it won't
work!

However, ASI's will still work in the "Northern" and "Southern" hemisphere.
The influences are more subtle.
The Winter company builds precision instruments for sailplanes. The number
built is rather small compared to car speedometers (just ask Mike how many
varios he sells!)
Winter would have to built ASI's that spin anti-clock wise but the
production run is too small - there a lots more sailplanes in the Northern
hemisphere compared to the Southern hemisphere.
The requirement to counteract the Coriolis force acting differently here in
the Southern hemisphere is overcome by the requirement to extend the ASI's
range 20 knots past VNE.

Anything is possible - that's why I bought a lottery ticket. I reckon I
would look good in a 31!
:-)

Re: [Aus-soaring] For sale ASH-31

2013-09-09 Thread Mike Borgelt

Here's the relevant part of CS22 regarding airspeed indicators:

CS 22.1323 Air-speed indicating system
(a) The air-speed indicating system must be
calibrated to indicate true air-speed at sea-level
in standard atmosphere with a maximum pitot-
static error not exceeding ± 8 km/h or ± 5%
whichever is greater, throughout the following
speed range 1·2 VS to VNE, and with wing-flaps
neutral and air brakes closed.
(b) Calibration must be made in flight.
(c) The air-speed indicating system must be
suitable for speeds between VS0 and at least 1·05 times VNE

So a glider like that ASH31Mi with a Vne of
152KIAS needs an ASI capable of reading to at
least 159.6 KIAS so the standard Winter ASI which
reads to 160 knots would be adequate.

So what is the overwhelming reason for Australia to do something different?

Hello all

I noticed that the subject of ASI labelling on new gliders is coming up
every few months or so.

To put members of this newsgroup at ease it should be said that Schleicher
already complies
with the requirement after Ian Mc Phee made a corresponding suggestion some
time ago.

New Schleicher gliders come with ASIs which indicate 20 kts above Vne
(usually 170 kts).

Glider is EASA approved, instruments are EASA standard.

For safety reasons, we don't allow pilots to self launch when hiring a

So does the 170kt ASI just move the stop a little further around or is the

So who dreamed up this requirement? Last I looked at CS22 the glider is
designed to 10% over placarded Vne, test flown during certification to 5%
over. An ASI in service that reads to 5% over Vne would seem to me to be
adequate which at 152Kts Vne and 160 kts max reading on the ASI this one
seems to be.

So is this ASI acceptable to EASA? If so why do we have a different
requirement? No doubt our Australian air is "different".

2013-09-08 Thread Ian Mc Phee
And notice Winter ASI VNE (red radial) seems to be 150kts or 152kts.
Strictly speaking GFA require for issue if Australian C of A an ASI with
markings on ASIs 20 kts over the VNE.

To all considering new gliders ask the factory for an ASI with a mark at
170kts as have been provided by Achim Winter for more than 10 years and
costs noting extra (just ask)

Ian McPhee
PS several other makers are missing this ASI mark issue also but JS1 seem
to be getting it right.

[Aus-soaring] For sale: Carbon Nimbus 2c VH-GAW

2012-04-21 Thread Robert Hart

Hi folks

As I have decided to buy a new glider, my gorgeous carbon Nimbus 2c
(Alice in Wonderland) is for sale.

2-pack paint on fuselage/tail, gel coat on wings
   Winglets
Comprehensive instrument panel: Vega/Altair/FLARM, large altimeter
and ASI, Borgelt vario as backup, XCOM radio, EW recorder
   Good trailer

Alice flies beautifully and is an excellent XC glider - capable of
staying up late in the day in weak lift yet able to fly fast when fully
ballasted. She has won days in state and national open class
competitions in the last few years, beating Nimbus 4s and ASH25s. Her
trailing edge flap/brakes provide are significantly better than the
standard brakes on the original Nimbus 2 - and of course she has a
standard (not all flying) tail.

I am selling because I do not wish to be in paddocks in my later years
in gliding - hence a turbo seems to be the way to go.

Please contact me off-list to discuss further!

[aus-soaring] For Sale

2001-08-05 Thread Catherine Conway

Hi guys

The time has come

FOR SALE

ES60 Boomerang VH-GQZ (known affectionately as QueeZy)
Serial Number 85 Mk1 June 1966

30 yearly complete
Completely refurbished by current owners and covered with Stits
fabric. Nice paint scheme.

Tinted Canopy and spare clear canopy (never fitted)

Lined cockpit.

Set up for competition - same performance as a PW5.

Instruments:
Borgelt B21,24,25 (the last 25 ever made).
Microair 760 radio
Very good Asi, altimeter and mechanical vario

Tow out gear, tie down kit, parachute, enclosed trailer (the trailer
does need some minor work which I'll try get to soon)

Two people can rig it in about 15 mins.

Photos available at the following

http://www.auscom.com.au/Cath/QZ.jpg - taken a few years ago at AUGC
before tinted canopy was fitted.

http://www.auscom.com.au/Cath/Benalla2000/QZpanel.jpg - instrument
panel and interior

http://www.auscom.com.au/Cath/Benalla2000/QZflying.jpg - instrument
panel while flying

We've owned this glider for 13 years. In that time we've covered
heaps of XC kms including several 500 km flights, taken it to camps
and competitions across the country and had a lot of fun.

It won the Vintage Gliding Association Schneider trophy in 1996 for
best restored Schneider glider.

It's for sale because all syndicate members have families and
therefore less time than they had, and most have another glider too
so there is not enough time to look after QueeZy and give it the love
and attention it deserves.

Its given us cheap flying and would be a great first glider for
someone while still offering them the chance to do everything from
local flying to Vintage meets to National Sports class.

Enquires to me. Mobile 0429 803 705, email [EMAIL PROTECTED]
